Starting point is 00:01:10 Well, we have a lot to get into. It is a busy time of year. I'm going to be departing here pretty quickly. So I want to talk a little bit more about the basketball game coming up against Indiana, the importance of that game for Iowa, get off the three game losing streak. What that's going to mean, we are going to get into that. We're also going to talk some basketball after the dominating performance from the Iowa women against Oregon, didn't completely put the ducks away.
Starting point is 00:01:35 way still really impressive performance and the emergence of freshman addie deal feels like that is a big one for this women's team. We're also going to be joined by David Eichold, his perspective on the Iowa Transfer Portal, what is happening there in football and what they do. In fact, that's where we're going to begin today's conversation in the Transfer Portal as Iowa has landed yet another commitment their 12th of the season as they land Emmanuel Alibajou from North Dakota, young man from up in Minnesota is where he played his high school ball, guy that production-wise isn't huge by any means, but really does feel like a debt piece,
Starting point is 00:02:13 a guy that has at least two years of eligibility, potentially three, good size to him, 6 to 300 pounds. Iowa looking for that big guy in the middle, played with Bryce Hawthorne in high school. Thinking of those two guys together, absolutely crazy.
Starting point is 00:02:29 But he was committed to Yukon, made the flip over to the Hawkeyes, a big body for Calvin Bell to figure out there. But from there, it's a question that continues to come up from a lot of Hawkeye fans. Why didn't I will go after a quarterback in the portal? And I think the reason, there's a lot of different reasons for it. Let's start with this. Number one, they feel good about what they have.
Starting point is 00:02:52 And we can argue about this and we can play ourselves in circles and Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown and what they have with those two guys and Hank Brown and what he looked like against Indiana. and we haven't seen much Hecklinsky, and we can look at all the knox that are out there against both these guys. And there's plenty of them. I understand that.
Starting point is 00:03:07 However, coaching staff, from Tim Lester to Kirk Farrants, they feel comfortable about it. Another part that I think is very helpful about this is for the first time in three years, Iowa's quarterback will actually be able to go through spring practice. It'll be a competition. Both those guys are going to be getting reps.
Starting point is 00:03:26 But with both those guys with that opportunity, I think that's going to go a long way for the development and what we're all hoping for as Hawkeye fans that we see this passing game really take a real step forward when you have quarterbacks that are able to practice go through everything. I get the coaches to see them in spring practice.
Starting point is 00:03:44 I think that's going to go a long way. But maybe the third part of this is the most important. And very well, the anticipation from the Iowa football staff that this is what this was going to look like. It's the cost. You go through and you look at what a quarterback is now costing inside the portal and the reports from Gimaud Williams
Starting point is 00:04:04 and looking to leave Washington and he already signed his deal, what that is going to be. You look at a guy like Predid Sorsby, who is fine, but the kind of money that he was apparently commanding in the portal
Starting point is 00:04:19 before he landed, it's just, the cost of doing business at the quarterback's spot, it's incredibly expensive. And as we saw this past year, Iowa getting Mark Grinowski, that took a while, while before that, getting Cade McNamara, never exactly hit.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And Iowa had to spend for those guys. Iowa had to use a big portion of their money to get both of those quarterbacks out of the transfer portal and for Iowa. And what they are as a developmental program, this course of action, it's going to be different, is it the right one? I understand the thinking. I understand the thought process. We don't know what Jeremy Hecklensky's going to look like in a game.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I know they're excited about him. He's also a shorter quarterback. He's a guy that is not exactly the kind of frame that we just saw from Mark Rodowski. These wide receivers coming in, we don't know. But with the quarterback's spot, it's plenty of guesswork. But I think the cost of doing business also goes hand at hand. On top of that, we mentioned two damaged goods quarterbacks for Iowa with Mark
Starting point is 00:05:26 Bernowski and Cade McNamara, the two most recent. Well, there's maybe a reason that they went to Iowa is because Iowa, A, maybe had to overspend. But secondly, it is the negative nature of the way the people look at the Hawkeye offense. And if they can change that perception, if that passing game can take a step forward, we're going to be able to get in a lot more houses, have a lot more conversations, and have more opportunities to get a big bite at the
Starting point is 00:05:53 apple. Look, I was not Texas Tech. as it pertains to the money that they have for NIL. They're not Oregon. They're not at the upper crust of college football in terms of spending. But let's also not make them out like they're the sisters of the poor. Remember, Miami will play for a national championship on Monday night. Who are they looking at in the portal?
Starting point is 00:06:14 Mark Grinowski. People believe some out there that their preferred choice was Grinowski or the guy that they got in Carson Beck. Speculation, rumors. No basis to that. but I've heard that from a couple of different people. That aside. Iowa went out, though, knowing that Mark Grinowski needed shoulder surgery and they made the decision to go do that.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Well, if you show this offense and this passing game taking a step forward, there's going to be guys like Mark Garnowski, but maybe not ones that have to have shoulder surgery that miss spring practice. That's down the road. It's about the here and now. What the coaches have told us, Tim Lester, the offensive coordinator, to Kirk Farrant's the head coach,
Starting point is 00:06:54 they are happy with what they have. Will they be right? It better be. We continue here, Lockdown Hawkeyes. More portal talk with David Eichol from 24-7 SportsHawkeye Insider.com. We'll get David's perspective of what he has seen in the transfer portal. That's coming up. We'll also talk some basketball with him, Iowa, with a big matchup against Indiana.
Starting point is 00:07:14 As we continue, this is Lockdown Hawkeyes. Starting point is 00:08:12 Hello, David. I call Trent and Ken. How are you, sir? I'm doing well, guys. And actually, this is perfect time because there are some breaking news for Iowa football. Oh, that just came out about 45 seconds ago. Lay it on us. The hell was sharing. Do a leap. So according to CBS forces Matt Zennett, Chris Pelosi is, going to be the new special teams coordinator. Tread like that, right? Yes, that is a name.
Starting point is 00:08:37 He was, what, with the staff a while ago, came back as an analyst this past season. Do I got the timeline right here, David? Yes. Yeah, I'm pulling up his profile right now. Actually, Elliot and I just talked about our podcast. I posted about 30 minutes ago, and he called it. He said that was the name to watch. So he got to give my colleague here some crap for that.
Starting point is 00:08:57 But, yeah, Chris, he was an analyst this past season for Iowa, but he has numerous experience across college football. I believe he has some NFL experience as well. He's coached special teams before. So this just seems like kind of a slam dunk. How many other guys were in the running? Any idea? I think Brock Sherman probably got an interview.
Starting point is 00:09:17 And it's funny because I remember mentioning you guys last week that Miles Taylor might be a name to watch. And now, ironically, he's actually the new safety's coach at the University of Nebraska as of yesterday, according to Matt Rule. That's kind of been swept under the radar since. Dylan Rayola is now backing up another big 10 quarterback. Yeah. Did not have that on my,
Starting point is 00:09:37 no, but you know what? He's got that injury, right? And that's got to be play a big role in the fact that he's willing to do that coming back. But he break his leg. Was that what it was, broken leg or?
Starting point is 00:09:48 I think it was a fractured fibrill. You think so. Yeah. It's a painful injury for sure. But I think he's supposed to be clear in this spring. I really don't think that that was going to scare to me. People away. I just think that.
Starting point is 00:10:01 You know, his recruitment for being a five-star was so under the radar. It feels like in this transfer portal cycle, it's just their rumblings. And all of a sudden it's like, oh, he's going to Oregon. Yeah, fair points. And here we are. Yeah, that's incredibly. That will be something down the road. Obviously, we'll get to and kind of those off-season topics.
Starting point is 00:10:19 To the portal for Iowa, they have got 11 guys that have been committed. It's been a little bit drier here leading up to tomorrow's deadline for people to enter into the portal. they're still doing work. What's the latest on the portal front for Iowa? Any news, any information, any guys that are still visiting at this point in time? Yeah, so I mean, I think Iowa's done terrific job in this portal cycle, guys. And it's been very interesting to kind of watch the way they've approached everything because you look at the list.
Starting point is 00:10:49 They only have one, I believe only one of their current commit, only has one year of eligibility remaining. And that's Bryce Stevens and the Holy Cross Defense to tackle. But everybody else has at least two or three years of eligibility. So it does seem like Iowa is going after high-level playmakers from the FCS or low FBS level saying, hey, look, we're going to give you every chance to be able to go out there and compete your first season. And then maybe they'll break out in that second year. Outside, I think Tony Diaz was an absolute steal, by the way.
Starting point is 00:11:17 I think he's going to be Iowa's second-league receiver next season. It will not surprise me. I think he's that good. But Iowa right now, I believe they have an SMU, a wide receiver transfer on campus. they did not see any game action last season. I believe he's got three years of eligibility remaining, but he's going to be more than likely preferred walk on. I still expect to hear some news regarding a punter here sometime in the next couple of days. And I do think that Iowa still scouring maybe another defensive line commit at this point. I think the secondary is
Starting point is 00:11:52 pretty well sets, but they might take another cornerback. But as I said, I think Iowa's done a terrific job in this portal cycle and they have some impact guys. that now will be able to have a chance to compete next season. I don't know how accurate this is. I should have gone to a 24-7 sports. You guys do a phenomenal job with the portal. Apparently there were 10,576 that entered the portal as of Wednesday morning. There are still, and it closes tomorrow, 6,846 players that enter the portal looking for their new team.
Starting point is 00:12:22 They're not going to fill all of those spots, which is just unbelievable to me. some of the bad advice and some of the poor decisions that ultimately will come back, I think, to haunt some of these guys. I mean, it's just not sustainable, right? I think everybody under the sun knows that, but we continue to kind of push it down the line. I do think once you get the five, eventually it's going to be, you get five years to play college sports. That's what it's going to be. A big reason why the coaches now have stayed at a red shirt year should be nine games is because the NCAA is going to eventually say, well, sorry, 75% of the season.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Why don't we just make it five years? That's what the coaches want. That's what Kirk Farris has wanted for a long time. No red shirt. You get one transfer. That's what needs to happen. That's what's going to level everything out. And I do think eventually we're going to get there.
Starting point is 00:13:13 But I also think, Ken, that it's like 38.9% of FBS college players there in the portal. It's some of absolutely absurd number. And there's going to be a lot of guys in that portal, as you mentioned, and their career is over and they don't even know it. It's sad. It's a bad reality of this and people chasing money, chasing bags, having agents that are rogue agents many times, telling them things that aren't exactly true.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Definitely a lot of negativity out there. David, when you go through, you mentioned Tony Diaz. How about on the defensive side? I'm really intrigued with a lot of those three different safeties that come in. Brown looks to be maybe the most ready-made after what he did at James Madison this past season. And maybe the biggest question is, what are they going to do with Zach Lutmer? He played corner a bunch this season.
Starting point is 00:14:00 He can play cash. He can play both safety positions. Is that kind of the key to this all, maybe finding the best position for him and then filling in the gaps for there? Or let's fill in the gaps first and we can put Lutmer wherever we want because he's that good. I think it's still in the gaps and put Lutmer wherever. I mean, he's Cooper to Jean Light or as Mark Gernowski called him what, the Walmart, Cooper to Zia. Yes, that's good. A.mard or something like that.
Starting point is 00:14:23 I'll tell you what, that's not any version of being Cooper DeGine, I think you're doing pretty well for yourself. So look, I think you get Tyler Brown. I think he's a perfect fit for strong safety. He tests out incredibly well at pro football focus. He's great in run support. What's a difference maker? 80 tackles last season for James Masson. I told you guys last week, I love Anthony Hawkins. I mean, at 6.3, 205, you can't teach that size. I think he has a high level capability. Lutmer, I think, makes a lot of sense at the cash spot, but I also know if they can't get a lockdown guy on the opposite corner of Deshaun Lee. And if Deshaun Lee doesn't take that next step, we know the value of what a lockdown corner brings to Iowa's defense.
Starting point is 00:15:05 So do you throw Lutmer out there? Do you throw maybe Rashad Godfrey at the cash position with what he did, especially in that showing against Nebraska and how hard he can hit and his playmaking ability? Do you throw Jalen Watson in that cash position? I think it's going to be this. They filled in the gaps and they're trying to install. I don't want to say a new defense, but you think about how many guys are replacing, right? I mean, lose Cohen, you lose Xavier, lose T.J.
Starting point is 00:15:30 It was all three-year linebackers. You lose multiple guys on the defensive line. Like, I think there's going to be eight new starters next season for Iowa's defense. I don't have to listen from me, but I think it's either eight or nine. And Lutmer's going to be one of the guys that's going to have to be the leader of that defense. So wherever the coaches say, you already know what he's going to say. Yes, coach. I got it. That's exactly why I think's going to happen. Absolutely. Let's switch to basketball. If it would have should have last night,
Starting point is 00:15:57 that Marquis win, that it has eluded them so far. Look for a while, like maybe it was going to happen last night. They kept exchanging baskets. You knew that somebody was going to blink at some point. I had a couple of misses. Purdue continued to make, and they would eventually wrestle the lead away from them and go on to win by seven. But look, I was in again. There's Ben McCollum will say the same thing. no moral victories, but they're close. I think they're close to picking off one of those teams, getting one of those victories that so far they've been unable to find.
Starting point is 00:16:29 At the risk of sounding pretentious, guys, I was nervous for Iowa when Braden Smith had zero points at half. Because you knew exactly what he's capable of. He's the best point guard in America. Remember last year, I know it's two different systems, two different teams, but last year, Iowa was looking like they were going to knock off Purdue in Carver. And Brian Smith went bonkers in that second half.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So it just kind of felt like it almost a little bit of the tale of yesterday. And Ben McCollum would be the first to tell you, you can't give up 73% from the field in the second half on the road against the top five team. You're just not going to win, right? They made nine of the last 10 shots. I know some people are talking about fishing. Yeah, there's a handful of bad calls. They lost because they couldn't stop Purdue.
Starting point is 00:17:13 That's exactly why they lost. I thought they did a good job on the glass. I thought Ben, there's two things. he has to avoid foul trouble. He just can't, he's too good, he's played too much basketball to get in this much foul trouble, especially early. And two, I thought there were two horrible shots from Bennett last night, down the stretch. Late in the game.
Starting point is 00:17:31 That's something where, you know, we talk about the best player getting the ball and taking over, and there's a level to that where I agree. But it's almost like in those moments where Bennett just doesn't have his eyes on anything other than the basket and he misses a better maybe shot opportunity. when guys around him were hitting threes. Caleb Colmes had four threes last night. He didn't get a look. Tavion Banks had that great shot from darn near 30 feet.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Do we at least give Iowa a chance. But I think Banc search has to be better. And ultimately, guys, Alvaro Fulgaris has to be better. That's the key to unlocking and getting over that hump. Alvara Fulgaris has to be Iowa's second best player if they want to knock off some of these teams. A lot of talk after the game. McCullum mentioned defensively the bigs just not playing good.
Starting point is 00:18:17 and pick a roll coverage, that defensive end of the floor. You mentioned what Purdue did offensively late to run away and get the victory in this one. David, I want to go this direction with you, though, when you look at this squad and what's still in front of them. Indiana on the road, that's a winnable game. There's a lot of winnable ones in front of them, but the quality victories. You get Nebraska twice. You thought, well, I'd probably get a split out of that coming into the year, lose over there. Well, not so fast after what we see Nebraska do.
Starting point is 00:18:42 You get Purdue, they already lost to him there, and they come to Carver, certainly not going to be an easy. game. In terms of quality victories, is there a little bit of concern here? They don't have a quad one victory yet, and you look through, there'll be wins, there'll be plenty of wins where there'll be quality wins out of this group. I think that's the big question mark. But the other side
Starting point is 00:19:01 of it, too, is Iowa's been extremely competitive in every single game except the Michigan State. Like even the Illinois one, the Illinois loss was deflating, but they came back, they fought, they got the crowd involved, like you felt like they potentially could have picked them off. Right. I think there's a
Starting point is 00:19:17 level to that where this team's going to start to figure it out. And I'll be honest, you look at the losses, that at Minnesota one, still the worst one, but by far to me, right? But these next seven games, there's a very realistic chance to me that Iowa can go five and two over the next seven. And I think there'll be a couple quality wins in there. And if you go out there and you beat, no, Indiana by I'm just throwing a number out there, like 15, winning on the road in the big 10 matters. If Iowa picks off a couple of those, I think we'll have a chance. If they get the five and two over the next seven. I think for the most part, people level it out, and I think there'll be some rationale. But the other counter argument is, guys, the bubble sucks. The bubble sucks this
Starting point is 00:19:58 season. So I was going to have every single chance. Avoid the bad losses, and it's going to ultimately be enough to put them in the tournament. Tren that I just spent a couple of minutes on officiating. And no, we certainly weren't blaming that on the outcome of the game as well. I couldn't, I can't get past the Cooper Cotch, you know, put his arms out to not let that guy And it was the big fellow, right? It was Clough. Yeah, Clough was trying to run through him. But the one I don't, that we didn't bring up,
Starting point is 00:20:23 and I would love to get some clarity. So Trey Kaufman-Renz laying on the floor with the basketball. Remember this in the first half? And it was under Iowa's basket, and he didn't want to give it up. And then a little skirmish, very little skirmish. And double technicals were called. What was up with that?
Starting point is 00:20:41 I didn't see any pushing whatsoever. It was soft. that happens in every single YMCA league game that happens at every level all the time. I look ultimately I get it it's a psychological battle right coffin Wren didn't want to give up the ball it was Iowa's ball right Alvaro was trying to get the ball coffin rent I think overly sold the movement on his body you see him kind of push himself up with his legs those are two very competitive very good players going at it I thought it was ridiculous they spent that long observing that and I thought double technical fouls
Starting point is 00:21:16 are the dumbest in college basketball. In basketball in general. It's stupid. It accomplishes absolutely nothing. And I don't think it was Kaufman Red or Fulgaris that were teed up. I think it was two other players, wasn't it?
Starting point is 00:21:29 It was another player for Purdue, and I think Fulgaris. It was Fulgaris. It was Fulgaris and Rennon, unless they changed the official scorebook from last night. I thought that was. I'll double check it,
Starting point is 00:21:40 but it was initially called on Fulgaris and Kaufman. I thought it was stupid. Let the boys play. It might have been Harris. Harris for anyways. Not that big a deal. Just drove me nuts anyways.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Opportunity against Indiana. In Indiana team that is really in the same boat as Iowa, right? They're all right. They're pretty good. They're a tournament team. But not sure if there's more to the Hoosiers than what it is. But you couple it with Darren DeVries. A lot of people wanted him to be the Hawkeye coach.
Starting point is 00:22:08 On the other side, there are plenty of Hoosier fans. They wanted Ben McCollum. It's going to be an interesting one. two coaches that were kind of in the same boat a year ago back in March and now suddenly they're going to be facing off over at Assembly Hall. Do you know how upset I am that Darren DeVries does not come into Carver season? I thought that was such a missed opportunity by the league. Like I get it, but the storylines behind that, that would have sold out.
Starting point is 00:22:33 The booze would have been so loud for DeVries. It made so much sense. I'm right there with you. I think they're very similar teams. I think Tucker DeVries has been okay this season. and they have a couple, you know, big shooters. I just think the big thing is, can Iowa go on the road and close out a game? Like, that's the biggest issue with this team.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Go back to last night, Trent, like, they only, Iowa was only out rebounded by three. And Purdue was a massive basketball team. Iowa's going to have to go in there. They're going to have to learn how to take over in a hostile environment. They got to start fast. And that's the one thing I took away also last night. Iowa started the ball fast offensively. And that's been a real big struggle.
Starting point is 00:23:09 But I'm right there with you. And again, if you can ever go at Indiana and escape with a win, it's never a bad win. I don't care how bad Indiana is. That, to me, is a quality win. Does the Big Ten win the National Championship Monday, or is there an upset brewing? I would take Indiana minus 18.5.
Starting point is 00:23:28 I think Indiana's by far the best team. I think they're going to absolutely crush Miami. And Miami has injuries on the defensive side. And it's already tough enough to even try to stop Indiana on offense. Somehow Iowa did. for the most part. Yeah, they did. I would hammer Indiana spread.
Starting point is 00:23:45 David I cold, Hawkeye Insider part of 24-7 sports. Thanks for what you do for us, David. Appreciate you coming on. Have a great rest of your week. You too, guys. Always appreciate you. Take care.

Ramping things up here, a nice win last night by the Iowa women. And really, a couple of stories jumped out. Addie deal, certainly her performance in this one, 18 points, 4-4 from behind the three-point arc, a couple of deep threes in there. You can see the freshmen starting to feel more comfortable. And with this Iowa women's basketball team, they're young, they are certainly a team
Starting point is 00:25:13 that I still think is going to get better throughout the course of this year. doesn't mean the expectation that Eddie D.L. should score 18 points a night, that this is going to be now the baseline for her going forward. But when you could have this kind of player off the bench that can provide that kind of spark. And now we've seen it a couple more times here recently. It is absolutely positively one of those that you feel really, really good about and certainly good about what she's going to be. So I love to see that. We know the upside. And you got the veterans there. Fear Bach, her back these last two games.
Starting point is 00:25:47 what she's done on the defensive end of the floor. Also on top of it, getting back in the starting lineup, knocking on a couple of shots. You know, as we've seen Ava Hayden, maybe not quite as many shots for her, but that's okay because you got stulky knocking down jumpers. Not a ton, but there's a little bit there. I love the makeup of this team.
Starting point is 00:26:06 And when you talk about the upside of what they are, of what they still can be this season, Sweet 16, yeah. When another game, sure, depending on the match, up. We talked about it the other day for Iowa women's basketball team just to get into consideration to be one of those teams hosting in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, get the first and second round at Carver, get to a sweet 16. Last year was important to build the bridge. Go from the Clayton Clark era to now to the new era, from Lisa Bluter to Jan Jensen. That was
Starting point is 00:26:40 important they got to the tournament. They won a game. All right. Iowa basketball isn't completely falling off the map. Good. Let's build that next part. And keep that step moving forward and forward until a couple years for now. We're talking final fours once again with women's basketball. And then finally, we talked about it with David Eichold. I just can't get over the importance it feels like for this Indiana game, a chance of the quality victory on the men's side, go to Assembly Hall, what that would mean for this team and just get some positive vibes going after this last week and a half.
Starting point is 00:27:11 It's a winnable game. And it's one that not fire everybody if they lose, everything's got to change. Nothing like that. However, get this one in the win column, and I think we're going to be on the track for success. Tonight, going to be back again. We got so many podcasts as we're stacking things up here a little bit
Starting point is 00:27:29 as I'm going to be away next week. Though we still got some things in the can for you, I think you're going to enjoy. However, what we do have for you coming up is a look back. What happens on the mat tonight against Penn State? Going to be back with you. Also had an opportunity to talk with Tom Kekert on my radio show. have that for you as well for you on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:27:49 So look back at the Iowa Penn State wrestling mate, good, bad or indifferent and probably going to be bad, unfortunately. That'll do it for today. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes. Your first listen every day. We'll talk to you again tonight. Until then, go Hawks.
