The transfer portal continues to be incredibly fruitful for Iowa and a
devastating, devastating loss for Iowa baseball.

Glad to have you with us today as the portal season
continues to ramp up and be fruitful for Iowa.
We're gonna talk about both Iowa basketball and football
and a couple of portal additions that they have added
here over the last day.
We will get into that.
Also, we will be joined by John Bowencamp,
who will stop by talk everything
going on in the world of the Hawkeyes and he's going to be in Carver on Sunday as the
Indiana Fever will be taking on the Brazilian national team. Of course the headline about
that though, Caitlin Clark will make her debut return excuse me back to Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Great crowd on hand. Swell out in 20 minutes and we'll
talk about that with him. Plus some final thoughts on spring football coming up with John Bowencamp
and we have to tackle what happened in the middle of the week. Another midweek loss for Iowa baseball
falling again at the hands of Illinois State and if this Iowa team is going to be an NCAA tournament team, just not a game that
you can afford yet for the second time in a week. They fall into midweek game, just
a absolutely terrible loss. We'll get into that a little bit more on the Iowa baseball
front. But we begin today's show with a look at the transfer portal in Iowa. Though this
was not an official portal edition, it is a new recruit. So in comes Tate Sage, who that is transitioning to the Division 1 level.
Tulsa, who for a long time was a great basketball program, hasn't been the case for the better
part of 15 years, and he was committed to Drake under Coach McCullum. And that's where
the conversation begins. So this is something that I think people need to realize first
on the surface. This is not a young man that Iowa struck out on a bunch of the candidates that they were looking for, struck out in the portal.
We're looking for some other players and well, I guess we'll just have to take him. That's
not what this is at all. Right away when Ben McCollum made the decision to leave Iowa,
he let it be known to Tate Sage that yes, they believe that he could transition. He could be a
guy that could help them out at the Big Ten. This is not a player that is anticipated that is going
to help out right away. This is more of a developmental type of play for Iowa. And that's
what Ben McCullum and the staff is looking at with a six foot seven shooting guard from Oklahoma can
fill it up. I look at the overall numbers, they're not wowing. They're not
going to wow you, but much like Trevin Yurok. You look at his numbers just in the singular sense,
they don't wow you. But also remember he's playing with a ton of D1 talent all over the floor. And
the same thing here for Tate Sage. Down at Oklahoma, he had four D1 players, D1 athletes
on his basketball team. Average 14 points though, 15 points in the state
championship game led his team to a 4A championship down in Oklahoma. Again, Tate Sage is not going to
be a guy that's going to come in and going to be a starter, not even going to be a rotational piece
right away. Somebody down the road though, they believe that they can mold as the requisite
athleticism to go with that good size at 6'7", be a two guard maybe he is a small four whatever it turns out to be that
is the case on that front so that's the basketball side of things what other basketball note
on the home and homes for next year came out in the big ten they were released by the big
ten we found out who the double plays are going to be for iowa next season in men's
basketball the first one not a surprise because it feels like we're kind of turning this into a yearly occurrence and a very well could be where Iowa and Nebraska are going to play each and every year home and home.
Then the second one is a tough one. It's Purdue. There's a lot of people out there that have Purdue as the preseason number one team at the Big Ten in the country. Very close,
of course, two years ago, all the way to the championship game, lost Zach Eadie, but they
bring back Braden Smith, they bring back Kauffman Ren and a lot of other pieces from that team
a year ago, plus what they did inside the portal, and you get them twice next season.
And the final one, I don't know, it just strikes me as odd. Maryland with the new coaching staff there. Kevin Willard departs as he moves on to Villanova. So
the new staff comes in for Maryland. They got a completely new roster. Who knows how that's going
to translate, how they're going to be able to put things together in year number one. But that is
the other double play for Iowa next season. And then I'll have the single plays against everybody
else in the big 10. That is the way that
it sets up. Now, a little bit different on the women's side
because you only play one team twice during the course of the
year and that is I guess our basketball rival of Nebraska and
that will be the only double play for the Iowa women's
program next season which is okay. I'm completely okay with
that. That's turned into a nice
rivalry. Nebraska got him in Carver earlier this year. That
was a fun basketball game. So, there's plenty to to look at
with that basketball rivalry. The seals feels like it's
bubbling and continue to get better and better kind of going
forward. So, don't have a big problem with that. That's what
we have on the basketball front. One more Portal News Nug to pass along to you. And that is the addition on the football side of things. So Iowa continues to solidify what they're doing in the portal. They went out, looked at it, figured we need some help. At minimum, we need depth at tackle on the offensive line. So they go out and get Bryce George, who
was visiting Cal and USC.
Pretty nice get out of Ferris State.
You look at some of the other pieces.
Last week, Shahid Barros, the quarterback, what do they need?
They don't feel great about the direction of that quarterback
spot.
And maybe behind TJ Hall, we saw the struggles
that they had a year ago.
And remember, last year at this time,
that was the one thing they were still looking for.
Throughout the spring and into the summer,
they were looking for another quarterback
and were never able to find one.
And then we saw how it played out last season.
They bring in Barros from South Dakota,
runs a very similar scheme, and thinks
that they're going to be a guy that's
going to be an impactful type of player.
They bring in a long snapper.
In true Iowa fashion, they bring in a long snapper because Luke Elkin, he's going to be a guy that's going to be an impactful type of player. They bring in a long snapper. In true Iowa fashion, they bring in a long snapper because Luke Elkin,
he's going to be getting his mail in Chicago and very well has a chance to be the starting
line long snapper for the Bears next season. Obviously the relationship that he has with
Tory Taylor goes hand in hand with that. Tory Taylor also the holder for the Bears. He had
that connection and of course the punter that goes. So you have that connection. And of course the punter that goes.
So you have that part.
So Iowa wasn't pleased with what they saw, what they had.
Maybe Lamar Woods just looked at it.
They went out and got an addition there.
You lose a quarterback with Sullivan departing.
What do you do?
You go out and get Heclitski from Wake Forest, a guy that knows Rogero now, the offensive, former offense coordinator
at Wake Forest, and now is helping out in a role with the University of Iowa. So they're
just plugging these holes, right? And there's nothing major, there's nothing eye-popping.
I guess the biggest name of them is Bryce George. And now you add another one, just
a piece, just another piece that you look at. And I really like the thought process behind this one. So you look at the safety position.
Ty Hudgens comes in from Purdue. Wasn't a starter for the Boilermakers last year as
a freshman. Did play, played a ton of special teams, and that's where he got his reps in
his minutes a year ago. But you look at the veteran nature of that defensive backfield
and certainly at the safety position. And Hudgens, gens I think fills a role. Not only that, but it also goes without saying, Phil Parker wanted
him. And we have reached the level where if Phil Parker likes a guy, if Phil Parker is
after a guy, it doesn't matter their recruiting profile, as we've learned in the past. It
doesn't matter really what their background is overall as an athlete. If Phil
likes them as a defensive back, you just say, a-okay. Phil, do your thing. And that's one
that Ty Hudgens was a guy that they most definitely like. So that's what we got going on on the
transfer portal front. I was still going to be looking, you know, after Saturday, Kurt
Ferentz mentioned it in his post postgame press conference after the open practice Saturday that they're not done.
Now there were already a couple of things in the works, including Hutchins was on campus
and Barrows had just happened.
So you already had that part of it going on, but this is the new reality.
One thing that is certainly intriguing, I put this one, just file this one away for a little bit later on. As we wait
for the settlement of the house case and how college athletics is going to be shaped for the foreseeable
future, remember the roster limits that were implemented and how are being walked back. Now
it's not going to go back to what it was and for the walk-ons that have left the program, it's going
to be disappointing if that number bounces back up. And a lot of those guys that would have had opportunities in the past
to stick around and eventually turn into role players and even starters, that goes away. But
that there's still going to be a path for guys to come back. And secondly,
not just the walk-ons maybe having an opportunity or at least a handful of them coming back,
but they very well could have more options, more spaces on their roster than they thought,
and that can lead to them going out there and taking a few more developmental guys,
a few more of these guys like Ty Hudgens, who has three years of eligibility remaining,
taking a few more of those type of players that probably they normally wouldn't and would be looking at and
getting back into the developmental aspect of what
they do. Just something to file away and we'll see exactly how
that plays out what it's going to look like on that front.

No doubt. Are you going to be at Carver on Sunday watching the Indiana Fever? That's going to be quite an event. I mean, I don't know how much she's going to play. Of course,
we're talking about Caitlin Clark and her team coming. Not sure how much she's going
to play, but what do you expect to see, John?
Well, first of all, I expect us all to be dying from heat
because there is no air conditioning carver and it's
supposed to be 75 degrees and 15,000 people that said.
No, I think it's a lot of fun. I think that
you know I it will be curious to see I mean obviously it's a
sellout obvious, you know, it's going to be a big party. I
think it is it's a cool thing. It's going to be a big party, I think. It's a cool thing for
Caitlin, I think, to come back with and for her teammates to kind of see this. I mean, they saw
it last year, obviously, in where they went, but to come back and to see where she was and to see
this crowd support, I think, it's going to be a lot of fun. I think it's going to be a lot of fun
for everybody. So yes, I will be there for the Associated Press. So I'm looking forward to it. So it'll be a great kickoff to the season kind of
get us back our sea legs back for basketball after a little bit of time off obviously from the
college game and with the NBA playoffs going on. Spring football wraps up. Now we don't get a game.
We haven't had a game for basically 20 years anyway under Kurt. That's something very quickly. He
moved to the side, but we get that open practice, which was good. You go to those open practices, you see a few guys
that can pop. But more than anything, my takeaway was the ability just to take shots down the field,
the passing game without your starting quarterback looking like a 21st century passing game.
I know we're not, we're not exactly splitting the atom here.
We're talking about throwing the football down the field, but it does look a whole lot different
to me, John. Yeah, well, and it's in part of that was in some of the Tim Lester talks about
when we had him last Wednesday and he has been able to, because he wasn't out on the road
recruiting or doing anything during the spring or, you you know in the winter and in the spring time
so he was working with those quarterbacks every day going over Phil and just talking with them and
I think that has and plus that room is just better
I think now, you know with what they have even with Mark Grunowski hurt
That's still a better room than what it was a year ago, what it was, especially two years ago.
And so I think that they know what he wants,
he knows what they can do.
And I think that's what you saw
and what you're going to see, I think,
when we get into the ball,
is that this team can throw the ball,
and he's got the guys that throw the ball,
and he's got guys below the starting quarterback who can throw the ball and he's got the guys that throw the ball and he's got
guys below the starting quarterback who can throw the ball.
And so I think that's a good sign for this offense moving forward.
It's the second year in it.
He's worked with these guys.
He's got the quarterbacks he wants and now we're going to see what they can do.
And I think they can do a lot of good things.
What did you think of Hank Brown, the assumed backup quarterback this year?
I mean, I think he is, I said this to you guys, I think the last time I was on that
I really hope that 2026 starting quarterback is in the room now.
And I think it's him.
And I just think that his experience, what he's been able to do, but I also think it's him. And I just think that his experience
and what he's been able to do.
But I also think there's some competition behind him.
And so I think that will kind of sort itself out
as the season goes on,
who does become the Aaron parent next year?
Because like I said,
you just can't keep going in the portal every year
and find it guys, you've got to develop something.
And so I think he's more than capable
if something would happen and stepping in
and running that offense with the ability he has,
the experience he has in another conference,
it just, just overall what he can do.
I think he is a very good second option for that right now.
I would defensively took a step back last year.
Now there were still 11th in the country in scoring defense, which shows you kind
of maybe where kind of our thoughts are with this team and what it is spoiled.
Huh?
You lost a lot of fifth year guys, and even a couple of six year guys off of
that defense a year ago, or is it big 10 offenses figuring things out?
Was it guys maybe just sticking around a year too long?
Do you have any theory of why they did take that step back with all the experience that they returned a year ago? You know that's a good
question because I don't think it was so much because they did have the experience there. I
just think there were just those little mistakes that they haven't made in the past that cost them
some big plays. And Phil Barker even said that last Wednesday You know you and he said they let way too many of these explosive plays happen that they didn't do
I think that was probably a point of emphasis in the springtime
That it's like just be fundamentally sound and and what's really gonna be interesting
You see how that defense kind of fits next year or next season
You know when you when you see you know who's going to be at linebacker, who's going to play
that spot, who's going to play at the back end, and is there going to be an alpha cornerback back
there, that star that he's had in the past. That may have been a problem last year too.
There's going to be a lot of that, I think, go on. There's going to be a lot of that chemistry
that's going to have to be developed this summer and in the August because this defense
cannot make, they're making little mistakes such as they haven't made the pass. You've
got to clean that up.
Could part of the problem be the quarterback had all day to throw?
That too. You have to figure out some things so you know, obviously Phil Parker is one of the best at what he does. And so they'll figure that
out. I mean, I think he, I think he, I don't think he, you know, he, even though he kind of brought up
the stats, you know, like, like you just did, we talked about the scoring deepens, you can still
tell that he knew this wasn't acceptable what happened last year. And I think he's going to
do what he can to correct that
Ben McCollum now basically a month into the job still working that portal still trying to find another
Guy that could handle the ball a little bit and help out that part of it looking for a rim protector
But a month in how would you grade the initial?
Just jumping into things with Ben McCollum from the opening press conference to what he's done recruiting wise.
How do you think of, it's not the first 100 days,
but the first 30 days of Ben McCollum?
I'm gonna go A plus.
Wow.
Because I think he said all the right things
at the press conference, but he's backed that up.
I mean, I think he's put together a very good roster
and it's a very underrated roster.
In a lot of people's minds that you've been seeing that in some of the portal rankings
that have been coming out nationally that this was a really good pickups for him.
And he had a lot of work to do.
I mean, obviously you only have one guy coming back, but he's built a foundation with the
Drake guys and Cooper Koch.
He went out and got some outside talent that can play well.
Like you said, I think he's got maybe two positions left he wants to fill.
There's still a lot of guys in the portal.
I'm not going to be worried.
Their numbers, whoever he might pick up, may not be good, but these guys might be really
good players.
I really like what he's done and the impression he's made on the community and, and, and, you know, and on the fan base, I think this has been, I don't think
they could have asked for anything better.
Uh, did you guys hear what he did last night after the Carol I club poke,
uh, the Carol I club meeting?
So apparently Jan Jensen, Kirk Ferentz, and this isn't a, this isn't a knock
at them by any means and Ben McCollum were there and Jensen and Ference were leaving
after the event to go back to Iowa City. Ben McCollum apparently was staying last night
in Des Moines, so not the big rush to leave. There was pretty good turnout, hundreds of
people there, big room. He stuck around and put the tables and chairs away with the volunteers.
How far does that go? How far does that go?
Yeah. That goes a. Yeah. And,
and I mean, you know, I, when,
when they used to have i-club events here, which they don't anymore for whatever,
um, which that was a complaint by the way I was making, um, but,
but, um, but, but they,
but the guy that ran it said the Kirk would always stay and he said a lot of
times Kirk walked out with that. That goes along.
It does. Yep. You know, day. And he said a lot of times Kirk walked out with that. That goes along with it.
It does. Yep.
You know, and it's like I saw all for spinning out of that parking lot that had to wait quite
a few times. But, but you know, Kirk always was there and they kind of ended it, you know,
about midway through Fran, like maybe 2015, 2006. Then the couple of times Fran was here, he did the day after to sign autograph.
But to do something like that again,
I go back to that's why I rated it an A plus
because he's doing stuff like that.
And again, people remember that stuff.
Without a doubt.
That is John Bowencamp joining us

We roll through and look at last night's baseball loss to Illinois State. 6-5 the final.
And I'll tell you, had an opportunity to go out play nine holes of golf, which is great,
with Hawkeye Andy. And on the way back, see, I was down five one.
So flip it on the app on the drive home.
And they cut it to within a run, had opportunities.
It's just so frustrating because A, we know how good this team is, right?
We know how good this Iowa baseball team is, what they're doing, putting together an absolutely
incredible run in the big 10.
They sit in first place, they're 20 and four in the big 10, but these midweek losses.
And now you go through Iowa now with another quad four loss last night to Illinois state,
they have six quad four losses.
For everybody throwing their hands up and saying saying how is this team on the bubble?
How do how can you not put them in the NCAA tournament?
It's right there
RPI drops
precipitously again down to 71 now in the RPI. They're not conference straight. The schedule is
277th those six losses though against quad four teams, those are the anchors. Those are the problems.
And I don't know what can be done in those midweek games until the eighth inning, the bats were just
absolutely baffled against an Illinois state team that wasn't very good. It was the same thing a week ago
against Western Illinois. I get it. It's baseball, right? Upsets happen. And if it was a singular upset or even a couple,
it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But because of what happened to Iowa in the non-conference,
you know, dropping two out of three against South Florida, and they're a top 100 team. Still,
that's one, that's a series you feel like you have to get. Washington State, maybe the most
devastating one, they took on Wazoo in Texas, neutral
site. They lose three out of four. That team is barely in the top 200 of the RPI. The pressure
continues to mount for Iowa baseball now. With this loss, they go to Washington knowing
that they're probably going to have to win this series. Then next week they'll go over to Chicago to take on UIC at Curtis
Granderson Park, beautiful ballpark, terrible team, again can't afford a loss. And then
they wrap it up with the two matchups against Oregon State and Oregon. The Oregon State
matchup in Des Moines, neutral site, kinda, not really. But Oregon State,
with their losses last weekend to Nebraska, followed a number 12 in the country. And then
Oregon wraps things up at DeWayne Banks Field, they're ranked 10th in the country. Those
are opportunities obviously to help yourself out in RPI. But there's a real possibility
you don't win either of those series. There's a possibility you get swept in either one of those series.
And because of these kind of losses, you are digging yourself in a hole that might be seemingly
impossible to get out of.
I know the thought is a Big Ten regular season champion in today's Big Ten with the additions
of USC and UCLA and Oregon and Washington that they're going to be fine getting there.
Those six losses, they jump off the page to me.
Still work to be done.
And still resume builders, and you
can take it all out of the committee's hands
and just go out there and win the Big Ten tournament.
Speaking of that, the Big Ten tournament,
we're going to talk about this a little bit more, if not
this week, next.
The new format for the Big Ten baseball tournament. It's odd. It's different. It's an advantage for Iowa. We will get into that here in the next couple of days. Plus we'll set the scene as Iowa makes their way out to Seattle to take on the Huskies coming up this weekend in a three game set that begins on Friday. Tom Kaker from Hawkeye Report. He'll also join us. The latest on what's happening in the recruiting world. We'll talk
with him from On3 and also some news being made as On3 Media
formerly owned by the guy that started Rivals. Well they bought
it back. And we'll see if that changes things in the way things
are going on. Certainly at Hawkeye Report and a couple of the
other places. Hawkeye Beacon on the Rivals side of things. Love
all the sites. Love all the guys involved in it. And we'll see
down the line but that's a different conversation for a
different day. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown
