Injuries are piling up for Iowa at the worst possible time, making this week against you and I an opportunity to get healthy.
The Hawkeyes need to protect their key players, get others back, and clean up the roster before Big Ten play arrives.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day.
Today we're going to get into the recruitment of Caden Dottery, the top 10 player,
the latest on that front, a canceled visit, connecting some dots, some excitement,
potentially brewing.
We'll get into that a little bit later on as we'll be joined by Elliott Clough from hawkeyeinsider.com.
We'll talk to Elliot about everything going on in the world of Iowa, the injury concerns,
and what are they exactly going to do at the quarterback spot?
what looks to be a pretty good game, a game to get right against the UNI Panthers.
We're also going to talk about a report today that came from the athletic about funding of football teams as it pertains to NIL.
The Iowa Hawkeyes are not in a very good spot.
We begin today, though, with a look at the injuries.
Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Calci for a limited time.
Download Cal She and use code lockdown to get $25 when you trade $25.
Calci, trade, what's next?
Yes, it is a day after the press conference day over in Iowa City,
and Kirk Ferrence had a couple of injury updates to get into.
Now, the starting one, and the first one is DJ Vonami,
is not going to be part of the team.
Not going to be in the game plan as he is going to be out this week against the Panthers.
Speculation about what happened with him in preseason,
one of the top players in the country coming in at the tight-ed position.
A lot of expectations for.
or Vonami, and it has not exactly gone his way.
It's had a couple of opportunities for some big catches,
had a big drop back in game number one,
wasn't a huge part of the offense.
We saw Thomas Meyer make his first career catch
later on in the second half of the game
against Iowa State over the weekend,
but for him, obviously, his health, his importance.
When right, we know how good DJ Vonami can be.
We saw it a year ago in the games against Vanderbilt,
in the bowl game a season ago,
against Nebraska, when they enleashed,
That athleticism, what a high level he was able to play at.
That means that it's going to be, yes, the veteran, Addison O Stranga.
We will see plenty of him on the field.
Mentioned Thomas Meyer, he's going to be out there more.
And maybe some more of those young guys are going to get an opportunity at the tight end position
or what I would like to see.
I would like to see them go with a little bit more.
11 personnel, get three wide receivers out there on the field,
unleash Evan James.
Get that speed that we know he has.
get him involved more in the offense.
Find other receivers outside of Tony Diaz
that are going to be able to impact the game.
This is a perfect opportunity to continue
to fine-tune that offense and specifically
fine-tune what you're doing in the passing game.
Another reason for that is the running back position
going into this week,
and it sounds like L.J. Phillips,
who was lost in game number one with an ankle injury.
He's still away from being ready to play in-game action
and with a matchup against Michigan looming,
you definitely hope for the best that he can give it a go at that spot.
You, of course, have Kamari Moulton, who left the game against Iowa State with an injury.
So that is another incredibly impactful one.
That means Xavier Williams, who hasn't looked great so far this year.
We saw a little spurt on that eight-yard run by Nathan McNeil.
We're wanting more out of him.
The young running backs is at a time to unleash a Braden Jackson, a Brevin-Dahl,
Alante Dean, get those guys involved.
a little bit more. This should be
another game that Iowa's going to be
able to control up front.
Much like the game against Northern Illinois,
this should be a game that Iowa
is going to be able to run the football effectively
regardless of who's back
behind. But also, when you go back to that
game against the Huskies, remember
outside of Kamari Moulton,
the running back struggled running the ball
against Northern Illinois. And now
if Kumari Moulton is not able to go
or if they make the decision to pull
him out, yet another reason
I think this makes a lot of sense to go out there, really work on the passing game
and work what you're doing with your starting quarterback in Hank Brown.
Hank Brown going to get the start once again.
It appears, though on Wednesday there still doesn't appear to be full look at what it's going to be.
It was open competition.
That's what they said.
Surprising the way that it's played out going back to the Iowa State game,
the three series each back and forth to begin the game against Northern Illinois.
I understand some people want to see Hecklinsky.
You want to see what he can do, give him the opportunity.
Here's a crazy idea, too.
What if it goes this direction where we see Hank Brown struggle in this game?
And Hecklinsky then comes in and he lights it on fire.
Is that what you really want to deal with going into the game against Michigan
and that tough Wolverine defense?
I don't think so.
I think it is.
Hank Brown, he's going to be the starter going forward.
He is your guy.
Give him as much runway as possible and do as much in the passing game as you can.
against the Panthers coming up this weekend.
That's what I would like to see is unleash it.
Get it going, fire it up, and be ready to go for that matchup against Michigan coming up.
Another injury to mention over the defensive side of the football.
And we brought this up a couple of times during August camp.
I came back from Media Day, and it still was lingering in my mind a couple of weeks afterwards
before the season began about Zach Lutmer, who we all anticipated was going to be the punt
returner.
It was interesting when we see the first punt return back.
and it was Reese Van der Z back there against NIA.
All right, that was a little bit head scratching.
Well, then afterwards, Kurt Ferrence mentioned a pitch count.
And Zach Lutmer, this is not just the interception that would have sealed the game,
but overall, not the guy that was playing a different position, albeit a year ago.
He was playing that cash position on the line of scrimmage,
more responsibilities in the run game than what he has back now at the free safety position,
but saw him struggle at times with angles, saw him struggle.
struggling a little bit, some different plays in the run game that he just had been so good at
and being able to sniff them out.
We know he is one of the most cerebral players that are out there for this Iowa football team,
a very heady guy, a guy that's going to be at the forefront, and definitely, you know,
is going to be normally in the right spot at the right time, but that has not been the case
throughout the first couple of games of this season.
Another one with the importance of that game against Michigan, and because when you look
at the three-game slate, though it doesn't appear to be.
be nearly as difficult as maybe it did coming into the season.
Look, Michigan's great defensively.
The offense, though, still has issues even after the win against Oklahoma.
We know Ohio State's going to be a bear and still that road trip to Washington.
The woes on the left coast for Iowa football under Kirk Farrants, coupled with a short week.
There's a lot going against you in that one.
I still maintain the most winnable of the three right now, I believe, is the game against Michigan.
You want everybody as healthy as you can be.
It's football.
Guys are going to get hurt.
Hope the game plan this week against you and I is going to deepen our thoughts on that one.
We come back on the other side here of Lockdown Hawkeyes.
We're going to talk with Elliott Club.
We're going to talk some decision making, what they're doing at the quarterback spot,
how these injuries are piled up, a couple other things,
and we're also going to get into the recruitment of Caden Dottery.
But one final thing here in the opening segment,
that is the funding at the college football level right now for football roster.
Now, there is no official designation out there.
This is not something where you have to put in what your salary cap number is,
and we know exactly what the rosters cost for everybody like it is in professional sports.
But the athletic put together a piece that showed at least a very good estimate.
And with the number of people that they have working there,
people inside the college football industry, I think it's a good snapshot.
Iowa is second to last in the Big Ten.
one of the least funded rosters in college football this year,
and one of only two in the bottom 15,
that is a ranked team currently out of the power force structure.
How Iowa does it, retention is a big part.
Is it just Iowa fans not wanting to spend?
I don't know.
A lot of conclusions to jump to,
and hopefully we'll be able to track down some answers of that going forward.
But an interesting piece and a free piece also,
even if you're not an athletic subscriber, take a peek there.
Iowa State, they're fourth from the bottom at the Power Force structure,
but Iowa much lower than many people, myself included and anticipated,
coming in with this football roster this season.
We'll talk with Elliot Clough when we come back.
Stay right there.

How about beat them by 38.5 or more?
That's trading at 53%, meaning $100 wager returns 187.
That's what you do on Calci.

Appreciate all your support out there.
And a big thank you to our everydayers who are with us each and every day.
Talk to the Hawkeyes, Elliot Club, joining us from Hawkeye Insider.com, our weekly look after
the press conferences at the Hawkeyes.
Elliot, busy day for you.
I know over in Iowa City yesterday.
Got to hear from Kirk Farrants, got to hear from a number of the players.
And it feels like injuries definitely at the top of the fold here today when it comes
to the Hawkeyes, starting with DJ VoteNami.
do it today, Elliot. Good to talk to you. Good to talk to you, too, Trent. Yeah. Question
marks still about some health around the team. Doesn't sound quite like Tyler Brown is ready to go
after what we thought would be a brief, I guess, sitting out at the beginning of the season.
That safety from James Madison that a lot of people expected to be a day one starter.
Then you look down, and especially, yeah, you mentioned DJ Benami. I don't remember. I don't
call him being sidelined at any point during the game on Saturday. So that one's interesting.
Camari Moulton goes down with a shoulder, but seemingly a shoulder injury. L.J. Phillips,
no boot, no limp. So lots of interesting things to follow this weekend and to see if they even
touch the field against you and I. You feel pretty confident. And I know L.A. you used to cover
you and you got your certainly ear to the ground over there in Cedar Falls. I know about that program
and kind of the hard times that have hit them as they've fallen behind financially of the Dakota schools after their entry to the NBC football conference and more.
But what do you look at it?
This definitely feels like a game on the surface that you should be able to go with your number three and number four running backs,
get everybody healthy, get Thomas Meyer, a lot of run out there at the tight end position.
Estranga is still going to be there.
You still got a bunch of guys at that spot and you're going to be fine.
But with Michigan looming, you still want to have timing down, right?
and you still want to figure out exactly that offense,
how to unleash a little bit more here.
It's kind of that delicate balance it feels like getting guys healthy,
but also you don't want to miss a step here,
and suddenly you're not ready for the game against Michigan.
Yeah, yeah, that's the big thing right there.
I mean, I think especially when it comes to timing and chemistry
with whomever your quarterback is going to be,
because apparently there's no QB1 at this point in time,
which is just really weird.
I find it really strange that they haven't.
Kirk Farrant hasn't committed to Hank Brown after getting the win against Iowa State,
the first win at home against the Cyclone since 2018.
So that is probably the number one thing, right,
is getting chemistry and determining how you can operate with QB1.
At least, you know, that's how he's operating publicly.
So we don't, I mean, that I haven't heard otherwise.
on the scenes to tell you the truth. So it's a really interesting dynamic with how they are operating
and quarterback. And yeah, I mean, when you're talking about injuries to some of your top players
and continuing to maybe build some chemistry, figure out timing, and like that's important,
especially for, I think, for Banami, considering the drops that he had the week one and then
just hasn't really been targeted all that much. And week two, he had a couple catches. But
really looking like he's a compliment to Tony Diaz,
who's their top option through the air,
which I don't think is what a lot of us expected to begin the year.
So I would imagine that has a lot to do with continuing to build that rapport
with whomever is that quarterback.
And, you know, that is probably one of the weirder situations at this point
with not just coming out and saying, yeah, Hank Brown's our quarterback.
I also find it crazy because Kirk was talking about,
he was talking about both quarterback and kicker,
but it's about time, right?
And just getting experience.
Well, if it's going to be Hank Brown,
then give him the experience up there.
And if it's the first six, seven, eight, nine possessions,
whatever it is against you and I,
get him the actual game reps that he was just talking about.
I'm shaking my head continually at this one.
We don't know what Saturday is going to bring
in the way the rotation is going to be if there's a rotation.
Because last week,
we thought there was going to be a rotation and it didn't happen.
If that pass falls incomplete to Tony Diaz,
the long gainer that set up their first touchdown,
do you think we would have sought Hensky after that?
That's a good question.
I would probably say so.
The way I described it, I think, on the podcast and maybe just privately to Dave
and in the press box,
we were all at least in the press box and seemingly on the field.
The fans were doing the same thing.
thinking, okay, after these first four drives, nothing, you know, they didn't score any points,
probably time to go to Hecklinsky.
And Kirk Farrant being Kirk Farrant sent Hank Brown out there for another drive.
And what does Hank Brown do?
throws an absolute bomb to Tony Diaz.
And not only that, but he checked into that play.
So clearly the confidence is still there in himself.
And he completes it.
They make that pass.
And then he scores on the rushing touchdown just a few plays later.
So, you know, maybe that experience and patience and stuff like that, I'm well, clearly paying off for what Kirk Farrant's wanted to do there.
But, you know, it's not just committing to a quarterback for the sake of reps.
It's committing to a quarterback for the sake of his confidence and having the confidence of the offense to know, okay, this is our guy.
This is who we're rolling with.
let's get to work and knowing i mean iowa was the only power for team in the country to not
name a starter before week one and they still haven't done it for three weeks in this is
this is one of those scenarios where you just go why what what what there isn't an advantage
against u and i like that's that's that's that's kind of silly to look at that as such um ahead of a
a competition that's from the FCS that is kind of on a downturn and trying to work the way back up.
Like, are you really going to try to make Michigan plan for Jeremy Heklinsky and then maybe play
him against you?
Like, I just don't understand the advantage here and continuing to maybe give Heklinsky
hopes behind the scenes and then not let him see the, like, it's just a weird, weird situation
and what's the angle here, you know?
I don't get it either because it's not like the portal's open right now.
If there's bad channeling that's happening, you still stick around.
You never know injury is going to happen or whatever else.
Yeah, I'm with you.
It's hard to wrap your mind around exactly how this goes.
Also, hard to wrap your mind around how Iowa, after that offensive line looked great,
I'll beat against Northern Illinois.
The lack of success running the football against Iowa State.
Now they got some veterans up there.
They got some dudes.
And you can tell the game plan was very much,
we are going to work to stop the run here.
But the lack of success running the football against Iowa State,
what do you attribute that to, Elliot?
I would point to a couple things.
I think the first thing that I noticed live
and then notice on the rewatch as well is
Camarie Moulton wasn't really using cutback at all.
And there were cutback lane pretty routinely,
at least four or five plays where it's like,
oh, I'm definitely could have cut that back and gained more yards.
But rather than that, he kind of looked like Jazz Patterson
just running straight.
for where the hole is supposed to be,
hoping for the best.
It was kind of weird because we saw and have seen
a better vision and patience from Kamari on that front in the past.
So I thought that was strange.
I don't know if that was like something that Iowa thought they saw
going into this game,
that they would have an opportunity to attack certain gaps
or what was going on there because that was surprising.
I didn't think Kamari really looked like himself until the fourth quarter
and he had three or four good runs and then he got hurt.
So a weird, weird scenario there.
I thought the offensive lines got pushed.
I don't think they got pushed around.
I think part of it, too, is, man, I'm a little, on top of the confusion around quarterback,
I'm a little confused about how Xavier Williams has looked in these first couple of games as compared to last year.
What we saw last year was a guy who wanted to physically punish tacklers who I thought,
had quicker feet, was a little bit more decisive.
And this year he's been, in my opinion, a little passive.
Hasn't been quite as punishing of a runner as he was previously.
The contact balance that we saw, especially against like Wisconsin last year,
was near elite.
And he's just kind of going down with one or two hits.
So that's, I think, part of it.
Nathan McNeil really didn't get a whole lot of run,
except for towards the end.
He had a seven-yard run.
But that, you know, it's not as, it's different when you're playing with a quarterback who doesn't run like Mark Grinowski did.
And I think that has just is just an adjustment going forward.
Obviously, Hank Brown, Jeremy Hecklinsky, not going to run like Mark Rannowski.
I think the next quarterback in line to potentially do that would be Brayden Santy Banyas and he's a 2027 commit.
So I think it's something that Lester is going to have to figure out how to isolate and to expose what the strengths are of this offensive line as opposed to the offensive line that had both Stevens, Logan Jones, Jennings Dunker, one of those scenarios.
It's just it's just something that, you know, maybe you've got to have a little patience.
It's absolutely, like you said, not the same level of competition that they face against Northern Illinois.
even though Iowa State is in the midst of, you know, starting some things over with Jimmy Rogers.
The talent, just the floor is way higher with Iowa State than that Northern Illinois team.
So I would just say patience.
And then, you know, Camari see in the field a little bit better than he did against Iowa State.
Talk with Elliott Club from Hawkeye Insider, part of 24-7 sports, little Iowa football.
Got a basketball question also before we wrap up here today.
Special teams, as we know.
so important for Iowa football in the Kirk Barron's era.
We saw Boston Everett made a couple of big ones.
And, you know, we we talk about that final field goal from Kane Boar and the snap over the side and Phil Pot being able to get that one down.
I don't know, I know you went back and rewatch the game as I did, Elliot, a couple of different times.
There was a punt.
I think it was in the third quarter.
He was trying to go out to the right side for like a rugby style kick.
And he did.
But if you remember that snap, that was way to his left.
He had a retreat left and then run back right to get the pun off.
on that one. Need to figure out that long snapping there because Ike's felt week one there were a couple of times. And here in week two, there's been a couple also.
Yeah, I mean, don't forget the game winning field goal, right? Like that was that was one that Philpott had to adjust to. So yeah, you know, we heard behind the scenes and a little bit publicly that the long snapping hadn't been settled between he and Maddie McLaughlin, who was a freshman that came in a four and a half star long snapper, according to Cole's kicking. So,
I don't know if it's reared its ugly head quite yet, but it sure has the makings of potentially doing that.
Definitely something to continue to watch and a surprise, right?
I mean, felt not only this spring, but the spring prior got all the long snapping snaps, right?
All those reps because in the spring in 25, Bryant Wurall hadn't arrived yet from Boston College out of the portal.
And then this spring, Maddie McLaughlin was not, he didn't enroll early.
So Spelt has gotten a lot of reps.
And he got some with Lovar Woods, who was arguably the best special team coordinator in the country.
And then, you know, Polici has clearly done some good things with Boer, with Boston Everett.
What's going on here with Spelps?
So, you know, I wouldn't say the job is locked down, especially after a couple of those snaps that were, I don't know if the errant is the right word,
but off the mark.
And something to some key tabs on because like you met, I mean, kicking was Boer has essentially
eliminated all the concerns of, oh, is he going to get overwhelmed by the moment?
Oh, is, you know, he's going to be consistent enough because he has and was since missing
that PAT and that field goal against NIU.
So, I mean, it's a small sample size, a lot, a lot of work to go here.
But I think he's eliminated a lot of those concerns.
And then Boston Everett was awesome.
them against Iowa State in terms of getting ball inside the 20, four punts inside the 20,
lots of possession starting near the goal line.
So, yeah, Spelts is probably the main concern at the moment with that group.
That's Elliott Club, joining us here from Hawkeye Insider.

beat doing a great job. And we found out yesterday Jackson Davis, who was supposed to be coming
out of visit this weekend. He cancels his visit and everybody jumps to conclusions. Well,
that means doughtry, he's going to commit, right?
Pump the brakes a little bit on that one.
What can you tell us, though, most importantly, about Caden Dottry?
Yeah, as far as I know, the visit went well,
this is a scenario where Iowa is absolutely a player.
I will say, with David's backing out of his official,
you have to think that Iowa is going to go all in,
put all their eggs in one basket to get Dostry,
who is one of the top recruits in the country.
And, man, like you said,
you'd have to force yourself to say two plus two equals four regarding Davis
canceling this visit and just assuming that Jotry is going to commit because this thing isn't
over.
He's got a few more officials to go.
Miami's still involved.
A lot of those in-state schools still involved.
So like I said, it's not over, but Iowa is still in a good position.
I mean, to honor your elite eight team that made it in year one under Ben McCollum while
year five star is on campus.
That's a pretty good recruiting pitch, if I do say so myself.
So, yeah, I'd say they're in a good spot, but it is not done yet.
That is Elliott Club, hawkeye insider.com.
Hawkeye Insider, along with Sean Bach, as mentioned on the men's basketball side of things,
David Eichold over there as well.
What do you guys got cooking up as we get ready for kickoff on Saturday?
Man, I'm still covering some of the recruits that stopped by this last weekend for football.
a loaded list. And we've got a notebook from Tom Loy, who crushed it and covering the guys
who are on campus. I'll have a video here shortly, breaking down Chase Grove's film,
quarterback from Indianapolis, 28, who just committed three-star out of North Central.
Really quick release could be pretty fun in this offense. Yeah, I mean, we got our coverage
of U and I coming up. Man, it's loaded to Hawkeye Insider with three of us, especially now.
we're just pumping out content daily.
So there's always something to check out.
