Starting point is 00:00:00 Iowa Women's Basketball has landed one of the biggest recruits in program history. We'll talk about McKenna Willitschko, her impact and what it means for the Iowa Women's Basketball Program going forward. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the state of Iowa. You can hear me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network each weekday from noon to tune,
Starting point is 00:00:47 talking the world of sports and a lot of Hawkeyes with you. You can catch me in Des Moines on 106.3 KX&O, our flagship, along with stations in the Quad Cities, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and Sioux City. Today's episode is brought to you by Mazda. Like our players, we sweat every detail because when you make every move count, pulling off the unexpected is only the beginning. Stay tuned later for highlights in this week's moving the game forward. Mazda move and be moved. Today, a look at what we are going to see with the big commitment of Monica Willitschko,
Starting point is 00:01:21 what that means for the women's basketball program. Plus, let's have a brief overview during the Iowa football by week, a good time to take a look at this women's basketball team for this upcoming season, we will break that down. Also has some thoughts on men's basketball of what we expect to see out of the squad this year, including a big ranking for Iowa and one of the predictions for the upcoming season, we will break that down. Plus, plenty of football talk with you here today. Don't worry. Yes, we have you covered. We're going to talk about, is it time for the youngsters to come in at linebacker for Iowa? We've talked about that Troika of red shirt freshman is the
Starting point is 00:01:58 The time now after the by week for Iowa to get them involved and get them out on the field. And plus the latest on the Mark Grinowski injury all to come today. But we open up with the big news, as we mentioned yesterday with Todd and touched on it briefly. McKenna Willitschko makes her commitment to Iowa. And this is certainly impactful. Now, it's been trending this direction for a while. If you are following recruiting, if you're on Hawkeye Insider with David Eichold, Sean Bach and Elliott Clough over there, or you're a.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Tom Cakerd on Hawkeye Report along with Kyle Huesman. Those people do a great job in the recruiting realm. And reading between the lines with all of those guys, you could definitely anticipate that this was going to be something that the anticipation was they were going to get the commitment from Willitschco. The number six player in the country chose the Hawkeyes over Ohio State, USC, South Carolina also involved. In fact, it sounded like it came down to the last,
Starting point is 00:02:55 the programs there with South Carolina and Iowa. You start right there. Anytime you beat South Carolina for a recruit in women's basketball, you're doing something incredibly well. You know, another reason that this, I think, is so impactful in such a big deal is there's no connections here. You know, this is not talking about a kid from the Midwest or a kid from the state of Iowa where obviously knowing the program or even Addison Deal, who at a deal, yes, has connections
Starting point is 00:03:22 to the state. Her brother played at Cornell. So there were already those connections that were happening on that front. and because of that, you definitely looked at this and the impact that it makes, getting a player seemingly out of nowhere. They didn't have any prior relationship with Iowa and getting that commitment. So now talk about her as a player and what Wollichko is going to be. One of the first things that really jumps off the board with Wulichko is her ability to rebound.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And you know, you think back in some of the times that Iowa has struggled or when they're going up against some of the behemists of college basketball and that athleticism on the, the defensive end and certainly in rebounding at times could really show up and at times it could be a program when you start with somebody like that you couple it i talk about defense there momentarily that's another thing that really jumps out an incredibly agile athlete at six foot two now to play in the next level to be a w NBA player it's going to have to be on the wing for her like a small forward type maybe she's going to play the four more at iowa but the great thing is she has the ability to play a ton of different positions.
Starting point is 00:04:27 She can do a whole lot on that front and be very versatile on the defensive end of the floor. And she can guard a guard. She can guard a wing. She can play inside and doing those kind of things certainly helps when they're building and putting together the building blocks for this Iowa team. Just a huge commitment.
Starting point is 00:04:44 What to give credit as well to Jan Jensen and getting one of these big recruiting wins. And go back to the offseason and going out there and getting players like Emily Rodriguez and getting chit-chat right. obviously keeping Addison D.L aboard, it sounds like she's going to have a tremendous start to her career coming up this season. And when you go through and you look at what she was able to do, though, the transition from Lisa Bluter taking the job, keeping this program going,
Starting point is 00:05:09 keeping it afloat last year, you know, they had the downturn, they had that five game losing streak and it looked like, not that all hope was lost, but there was certainly going to be a conversation. Is this team going to be an NCAA tournament team? Well, they definitely did that. and won a game in the NCAA tournament, didn't go great against Oklahoma in the second round still, to be able to be able to keep the momentum going from Caitlin Clark to keep what Caitlin built in Iowa City. Also get credit to you, the fans,
Starting point is 00:05:37 and what you were able to do, a sellout for the third consecutive year, what the environment Carver Hawkeye Arena is known as. Now, when you have rap stars that are showing up, you have dignitaries, you have just people from all over the place that are showing up to watch Iowa win. women's basketball, that's impactful too, but also impactful, you being there every single game, having that building jammed up at the national TV, when people nationally talk about
Starting point is 00:06:03 the environment at Carver Hawkeye Arena, that is a huge component to this as well. And another reason that Wollichko made her commitment. So the question now becomes turning from that, what is next? Because they're not done. And when you look at what they still have in the pipeline, there are a number of other big time prospects that they are after. At the top of the list is Addison Bjorn from down in Kansas City. She has connections with all Iowa attack. That was her AAU program, so you have that part of it. Now, a lot of people believe that this is Yukon's player to lose, that Yukon is the frontrunner
Starting point is 00:06:39 for her services, her seven finalists, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Texas, Yukon and Iowa. Those are the seven that she has listed. Just took her visit to Iowa City last weekend. There's also a connection with Team USA with Bjorn and with Lichgo. So you have that component that goes there. I mean, if you hit this one as well, this completely changes the perception. It goes from nice class, you know, what we'll see to this is impactful.
Starting point is 00:07:09 It's not the fat five. They're not going to have five, but you're talking about that kind of big time. and when you're talking about getting to the highest level of this sport, breaking down those walls. Got to the national championship game back to back years with Caitlin Clark and taking that final step. These are the type of players that you need to get to that level. And Iowa has momentum there.
Starting point is 00:07:29 We'll see on the Bjorn front. Sounds like it's going to be a while, maybe one that's going to be pretty close to signing day before we find out exactly what she's going to do. Another four star player. This is a guard in the back court from up in Minnesota. And that's Fiona Murray. Now, have a local connection to this one.
Starting point is 00:07:46 How about being the cousin of Meg Augustuson? Watching the WNBA playoffs. You see Megan out there still playing for the aases and doing a good job off the bench for them. So you have that connection. Now, Iowa did not offer until a little bit later in the recruiting process. Didn't offer until July. If that's something that is impactful, we will see her finalist, Arizona State, Florida, Oklahoma. Oh, boy, Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Yeah, don't want that one. Missouri, Wisconsin, of course, the Hawkeyes, amongst her finalists. but got the family connections, Vienna Murray, now one to keep an eye on. A couple of their names for you as well that Iowa continues to be after in women's basketball recruiting.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Here on the local front, Jenica Lewis, I've called boy, let's see, three years she started as a freshman and did all the state tournament games, so there's nine. And during the regular season,
Starting point is 00:08:34 I mean, I probably broadcast 25, maybe 30 of Jenica's games now here over the years. And watching her play, she's so smooth, incredibly heady. I don't think she has the handles to be a full-time point guard. She can do that and maybe a reserve role, a combo guard, I think is more of the designation for Jenica Lewis.
Starting point is 00:08:55 But she's a tremendous player, can really shoot it from the outside and a number 22 player in the country. Another four-star player. They're after Amari Biles from down in Texas. That is her finalist, Oregon, North Carolina, Notre Dame, TCU. and she will take her a visit coming up here in a little bit. So that's what we have right now. And this is an exciting time.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Jan Jensen, so easy to root for. Just a great person, incredibly personable. And you hope nothing for the best. Not just as a Hawkeye fan, but just people, you know, people that make this world a little bit better. And you certainly have that with Jan Jensen. Easy to root for of what she's been able to do and keep this momentum going forward,
Starting point is 00:09:39 for women's basketball. Well, let's get over to the men's side of things and talk a little bit about this squad. We'll also take a look at the women's team this season. What should the expectations be? Expectations pretty big. Men's basketball, women's basketball, going to be a fun winner. Plus, we got football talk coming up for you. We're going to break down the linebackers.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Is it time to get the youngsters on the field? We'll talk about that as we continue, locked on Hawkeyes. The NFL season is here. has an offer you don't want to miss. Starting point is 00:12:24 All of it helps us get in front of more Hawkeye fans. Mention this year's women's basketball team and what they're going to have coming up this season. So talk from time to time about expectations. You know, that's something that I think is incredibly impactful when you're looking at squads, what it's going to be, what they're going to look like, and just where the temperament is of the fan base. So I like to go first and start looking at things in a different way. And you look through the Big Ten this season and who are going to be those top level teams.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Well, USC would be at the top of the list. I know for a lot of people, but obviously with the injury a year ago and what we saw on that front, the loss of Juju Wackens was so impactful to them. UCLA was a behemoth again last year and what the Bruins were able to put together last season in a 34 and 3 year. Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice and Jocquez, I mean, that team's absolutely loaded of what they had a season ago. So you got the two teams from the left coast and what they're going to be going forward.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Ohio State, you know they're going to be there. You know they're going to be a problem every single year. Michigan's been a good program. Indiana has put together a lot of nice year. Michigan State, Illinois. I mean, the Big Ten last season was just so incredibly deep. And the depth of that conference is going to be there again this season. At a final four team a year ago, another team in the elite eight, a sweet six team in Maryland didn't even mention of the Terps, Oregon, Nebraska, Washington, all tournament teams
Starting point is 00:13:54 from a year ago. The depth of this conference every single year, it's eye-opening. And you've got to be ready to go from the top of the jump. So you lose Lucy Olson last year. comes chit-chat right. Chit-chat is undersized, not the biggest player by any means. I want to see what they do in that backcourt, though, with her and Addison Deal, no, Eddie Deal, a player that opened some eyes going back to what we saw, dating back to the open summer workouts. And when some of the media, the beatwriters were there, they just said she was shooting it tremendously. And if they get that kind of shooting, you're going to feel great. Of course, you have the veterans as well in the back court with Taylor McCabe and Kylie
Starting point is 00:14:35 Fearbach. You know, Fearbach turned in to that defensive stopper a year ago, what she did as a defender. We know what a tremendous shooter McCabe can be and what she can do on that front. I mentioned earlier Emily Rodriguez, and I'm so excited to see what she can be for this squad. Rodriguez, inside, outside, a really unique skill set for her good size to her as well, a really good defender. And if that offensive gain continues to develop what she's going to be, the star of the, star of this team, Hannah Stulke. The question, as it was a year ago, can she play the foot for, can she be a player that you can play with a traditional center in there and not just be the
Starting point is 00:15:14 player that can beat everybody down the floor with her great speed and athleticism, but be that player that diversifies her skill set more, hitting that elbow jumper, stepping out and knocking down an open three from the top of the key. If that develops with Hannah Stolke along with all the other skills that she had fresh off a gold medal appearance this summer. Definitely the sky is high for Hannah Stolke and what she can do. And then in the middle, of course, you got Ava Hayden and Leila Hayes. Hayden, we saw it a year ago. I mean, the light bulb turned on late in the season and just how good she was late in the year. You expect that to continue. They also anticipate that Hayes is going to be able to help
Starting point is 00:15:51 them right away and maybe be even a little bit further ahead than Hayden was early last season. That would be great to see and you're kind of splitting reps in the middle with both of those players. You got the sophomores. Tegan Malaney. We saw glimpses out of her a year ago, along with Taylor Sremlo and both of those players, how helpful they can be, you know, as more complimenting players. I mean, they're not going to, I don't think, develop into all Big Ten type of performance, but they're both really good players. Should be a good squad.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I think a minimum NCAA tournament, a round of 32 team. Again, I think that's the baseline expectation. But if deal hits the ground running right away, can turn into a star. If Chit Chat Right is able to go out there and really speed up what they want to do, tempo-wise and can be that impactful point card for them. This team definitely can be in that conversation as a top 15 type of team. The pieces are definitely in place on the women's side. Let's jump over to the men's side and talk a little men's basketball.
Starting point is 00:16:46 So as we talked about with the men's team, I think the baseline expectation, much like the women's team, be an NCAA tournament team. And you might say, boy, that seems like a lot to me. You're number one of a new staff, new year number one, really a changing of the culture inside of Iowa basketball, that seems like too much. But I start with the player we always start with, and that's Bennett Sturts. I just, when you have a potential All-American point card and a point guard that is maybe going to be as good as anybody we've seen since Andre Woolridge, if he lives up to
Starting point is 00:17:15 expectations, when you have a guy like Bennett Sturts, I think you have to start right there that this team is going to hit the ground running. And you saw what he did a year ago, not just doing it in the Missouri Valley Conference, but when they took on major conference teams, just how good, how nice. natural, what a leader that he is. And that's why I start with that one. Getting Fool Garris from Robert Morris, I think was a huge pickup as well. Hearing some good things about what he's done during this off season.
Starting point is 00:17:42 He played internationally with the Spanish team. And he's a little bit behind on that. He got started early, though, with the Iowa staff and learning. One thing, though, about all these guys is how they're going to look, not just on the defense event. We've talked a ton about that. of they're going to be obviously better than what we saw under Fran on the defensive end of the floor. There is a real dedication to what they do on the defensive side of the ball. But
Starting point is 00:18:08 also, what you're going to see in making that extra pass, you know, offensively, Fran's teams were excellent. You know, they got up and down the floor. They were incredibly efficient. They did all those pieces that you certainly look for in an offensive team. This is going to look different. But great shooting is going to go hand in hand. And what they're going to be able to do from behind the three point line, I think is going to go a long way. So I saw this yesterday from the athletic and C.J. Moore, who I've had on my radio program a number of times throughout the year, really like CJ in the work. He's a Kansas City based guy. And C.J. came out with his Big Ten preview. And he had Iowa 4. And I know that was
Starting point is 00:18:45 eye opening for a lot of people. You know, when I talk about this team at minimum being a top half team, I've even got pushed back on that being a top nine team in the Big Ten. And I think that's silly in its own right. But that aside. to see them forth from a national writer, I think said a lot. Now, C.J. Moore also knows a ton about Ben McCollum being down in the Kansas City area, watching his teams in Northwest Missouri State. He kind of has a little more infinite inside knowledge of what Ben McCollum is going to be. Guys, you're going to love him.
Starting point is 00:19:15 It's going to be so much fun to watch this program, watch them do it in a way that I think makes sense for Iowa basketball. Now, the other ranking projection that is out there right now, now is from Bart Torvik. And you'll hear me say the name Bart Torvick a lot during the upcoming basketball season. It's an analytic base site. He has Iowa though in night in the Big Ten. Now one thing when I first looked at these rankings a couple weeks ago, Michigan and what they did in the portal, bringing in Cadill from North Carolina. They got a couple of veterans that have been around for a while. Roddy Gale, who started his career at Ohio State. He's been there the last couple of seasons. Cheddar's back for them. The power forward. Got a couple other guys
Starting point is 00:19:55 They bring in a really good freshman as well in McKinney. But I was surprised to see them third in the country. Also, Purdue, they're fourth in the country. Illinois 8th, UCLA 9th, Ohio State 19th, Michigan State 22nd, USC 25th, Wisconsin 29, Oregon 30, and there's Iowa coming in at number 38 in his preseason rankings, what the numbers spit out for this one. Iowa team's going to be good, and I think they're going to be able to beat you in a myriad of different ways. but shooting, passing, sharing the ball,
Starting point is 00:20:26 Fulgaris can shoot it, shoot it. We know Sturts can. And Thompson, I think, can help out in a big time way. Cooper Koch, what he's going to mean for this team and what potentially he can be now with that emphasis on defense, coupled with already that strong offensive skill set that he had, I think that's going to be fun to see. You know, another guy, I kind of came out of nowhere they got,
Starting point is 00:20:46 that was committed to Drake, was Tate Sage, and he really turned some heads. He didn't even mention Brendan Howson, and maybe the best shooter out of that mix. They just got a ton of guys that can fill it up from the outside. You got a tremendous point guard, how they're going to play. The physicality, even though they might be a little bit undersized. I said you before, Trevin Urock's going to have to help out this year.
Starting point is 00:21:06 And I think he will, but still not going to be the biggest team, but they're still going to compete at a big time level. It's going to be a fun winter of basketball here in the state of Iowa, not just this year, but definitely going forward. Let's wrap things up with a little football talk. Linebackers, is it time to play the youngsters? I think so. I'll tell you why as we continue, Lockdown Hawkeyes. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move.

You can make everyday drives feel like anything but from smooth handling to great control. with all-wheel drive standard in almost every crossover SUV you can drive with confidence through almost any season. Like our players, we sweat every detail because when you make every move count, impossible becomes irrelevant. Mazda move and be moved.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is also brought to you by game time. College football is here. We couldn't be more excited for it as we flipped the calendar into October. The tailgates, the rivalries, energy, and the game. the stands. You definitely felt that Saturday at Kinnick. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Let's jump over to now to the football side of things. What a start at linebacker.
Starting point is 00:23:54 After what we've seen from this linebacker group, we know definitely that there's been some frustrations overall with the linebacker group. Jane Harrell's taking a lot of arrows. But the most important part of this is he got banged up. He had to leave the game with an injury and we'll see exactly what his availability is going to look like. But as we've talked about the young guns, the three red shirt freshman linebackers, Preston Reese, who got a lot of pub during the.
Starting point is 00:24:21 offseason leading into the year as Bruce Feldman in his annual Franks list that he puts out at the athletic. He had Preston Reese listed there. Speed absolutely has it at a high level. Continues to grow the position. Now he's got to understand it. We've seen them out there on special teams, Cam Buffington and Derek Weiss Kyle. Those three guys that have a chance and are definitely the future of the linebackers. And what you see going forward with those guys is going to be tremendous. But with the questions there, and maybe it makes more sense to do it this way. You go with the veteran, and if you believe that you can upgrade this position by moving Carson Shire to the middle spot, put him at Mike linebacker, and then maybe it's Reese in there. Maybe whoever is best suited out of those three guys to go then over to the other side.
Starting point is 00:25:07 You can still play Rex Roth as your third linebacker when you do go with a traditional 4-3 defensive lineup, and that's a direction that you can go. But the time is now, and with the by week here, knowing what's going to be in front of you with the Wisconsin. that's going to try to run the ball again. This is a game that the badgers have circled and we'll definitely talk more about this game next week. But when you go through and you look at it, it makes a lot of sense to do it at this point. If you believe that the upside is there,
Starting point is 00:25:33 and it's not just about getting some reps, it's not just about the future, but these guys can help you right now. You've got to do it. Iowa has to have difference makers out there. And if you don't feel like you're getting that kind of play, I believe the time is now. Mark Grinowski's injury.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Cloudy. That's what Tim Lester told us earlier in the week. We'll hear from Kirk next week and get potentially an update on that front. Can you get by the Wisconsin game without playing Mark Cornowski? And the answer, I think is yes. That's how far Wisconsin has fallen and it's unthinkable. I mean, if you watch college football for the last, what, 30 years, 32 years since Barry Alvarez got them turned around and got that first Rose Bowl. It is unthinkable that that's what we're talking about.
Starting point is 00:26:21 with Wisconsin football, but that's how far they have fallen. And if you're watching Lockdown Badgers, you know that Brian over there is already talking about potential candidates to replace Luke Fickle, who almost everybody thought was an absolute home run higher. That this was perfect. But he made a mistake in trying to change their philosophy, their DNA as a football program and go to more of a wide open offense. It didn't work.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Now they're trying to go back, but you're going back now with not as good of players. can I go in there with Hank Brown or Jeremy Hicklinsky and get it done? I think they can. Now it's going to have to be a slug fest kind of game. I don't think they can get in a shootout and I don't think they will against Wisconsin, but I think they can get by.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Hank Brown missed on a screen and didn't set his feet, didn't make the throw, didn't get it done, and that's going to linger. And it's going to linger throughout this season and going forward. I think that's one that's going to sting for a long time because they had the Hoosiers beat. And all it takes is a completion on a screen pass.
Starting point is 00:27:22 And we're having a different conversation today. But he didn't. Still, you can see enough in that armed talent processing, going back to spring practice, going back to Open Kids Day. Hank Brown, I think, has shown enough that this guy can be the guy going forward. And there's a lot of love for Hecklinsky, too. Maybe with Hecklinski, we'll see a little bit of the slow mesh. That's what he ran at Wake Forest with Warren Rogero,
Starting point is 00:27:44 the offensive coordinator of the time, and now the analyst with Iowa. I think you're in good shape to do that. We'll see next week. Got an MRI. It was still cloudy. That's concerning. Mark Kornowski, though, if this team is going to still push,
Starting point is 00:27:58 make a strong run in the back third of the season. Mark Rannowski's going to have to be a big part of that. That'll do it for today.
