I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio.
You can hear me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network each weekday for
from noon to two, talking the world of sports and plenty of Hawkeyes with you with stations in
Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, and Sioux City.
Let's get into it today. We're going to talk a lot of football here in this one,
including where does Iowa turn now that LeVar Woods has departed. He will be taking the job
after the bowl game at Michigan State. Where does Iowa go for their next special teams coordinator?
We'll also be joined by David Eicholt of 247 SportsHawkeye Insider.com.
get his perspective on now all things Hawkeyes.
We got some basketball, we got some football to get into with David Eichold.
We begin today's program, though, what they look at the award that was given to the Iowa
football team, the Joe Moore Award.
And a connection to Kirk Farrants, one of his mentors, one of his protégés, a guy that
offensive line, that's where he learned from.
And obviously the connection that we've heard throughout the years, this is award that
over 260 different media members, people that.
are involved in offensive line, former offense alignment vote on, and they named Iowa
offensive line of the year. This is an award that has been around now for a better part of a decade,
and I was certainly been in the mix a couple of different times. I think it came as a surprise,
maybe to some people. They didn't have, obviously, the tremendous season like we saw,
rushing the ball like you got a year ago from what we saw from Caleb Johnson. It wasn't that
kind of thing. But a couple with Mark Bernowski, what he did and keeping him upright throughout the
season coupled with his rushing touchdowns, obviously this year, as he is on the precipice
of setting a Big Ten rushing record for touchdowns by a quarterback trying to chase down
shoelaces, DeNard Robinson, for that claim.
You have that component to it, and you just look through and the awards that have come
to this offensive line, All American Honors for Logan Jones, Jennings Dunker getting all
Big Ten.
How about both Stevens?
And maybe that is of the offensive line this year, we've talked a lot about Trevor
Lalk. And Lout this season came in. A lot of question marks. Was he going to be the starter?
Was it going to be him? Is it going to be Jack Dotsler? Who is going to be the guy that takes and takes
over that left tackle position? And the other component, you know, we talked about a lot during
the summertime and you, Irby-dayers, certainly will remember this, is if it doesn't go well
at left tackle, kind of where they go. We know Jennings Dunker. He is a right tackle at the
collegiate level and likely is going to be a guard at the next level. Just doesn't have the requisite
speed that you're looking for in athleticism, probably to be a left tackle, even in the
Big Ten, if you had to go that route.
Lotho, tremendous, but probably overshadowed.
Logan Jones, we knew was going to be good coming into the year.
I think we all know Jennings Dunker, even as he was banged up this season, that he was going
to be at minimum, very solid.
And you definitely got that kind of play out of him.
But both Stevens, a guy that had a ton of injuries early in his career, in and out of the
lineup, trying to battle through a myriad of different things that he had during the course of
his career. What was it going to look like?
What was it going to look like for this guy to be able to go out there to compete,
to have a healthy season, and just see the way that he graded out?
But it's not just him. I mean, you also throw into the mixed Cade Piper, and he was a guy
that we definitely had in Penn coming into the season that he was going to be a starter at
one of the guard spots. But he was still a young guy, though he was their six offensive
linemen back in 2004, still you wonder how it's going to translate. It's one thing to be a guy
that comes in in some of those jumbo packages, and when they go goal on and they bring an extra
offense alignment in, it's one thing to be able to do that, but to be able to do it, game in
and game out.
Now, personally, I think you can look through some of the statistical numbers and say, should
this award gone to Iowa, I think it's a fair question and a criticism.
Regardless, these are offensive line people that did it.
And though Iowa didn't have the gaudy rushing totals and overall offensive numbers that
some of the other programs specifically Oregon did, and that's where my vote would have been
personally. Hawkeye love aside Oregon, and probably a lot of that has to do with what we saw
in the game against the Hawkeyes. When Oregon came in the way that they were able to run the
football and that offensive line, I thought had a big part of that. But that aside, this is about the
Hawkeyes. And how cool was it to see that huge trophy? I mean, the thing is an absolute
monster, just the sheer volume, the size of it. And that's what you want for an
offensive line award, right? This isn't an individual award. This is four or five guys out there
at a time. And this is for the whole group and what they were able to do. And as we talked about
last week a little bit, we looked at the offensive line going into next season. And you have
to be, I think, even losing three tremendous starters, Dunker, Logan Jones, Boe Stevens,
those guys moving on. You still feel good with Lauket left tackle, people at one of the
guard spots, or maybe he kicks in to the center position. Ms. Linski, we got to see a little bit
this year. We saw a ton of Layton Jones because of injuries this year. Jack Dotsler,
we saw a lot early in the year, feel good about him moving over to the right tackle position
and taking over in that spot, coupled with the depth that they have. Now, they're bringing
in a bunch of offensive linemen this year. Red shirt freshman, redshirt this year,
Lucas O'Geyer got out there a couple of different times. They're certainly excited about his
future and what he's going to be able to do. It's deep and you feel good. Is it going to be
the Joe Moore Award winner next season? Probably not.
but I don't think the step down is going to be as big as many people believe for this
offensive line next season. I think there's going to be a real opportunity for them to continue
to build. And that goes to the offensive line coach, George Barnett. And Barnett, early in his
career at Iowa, there were some questions. There were definitely question marks about how this was
going to translate. If this was going to be the right guy taking over for Tim Polishak,
if he was going to be the right guy for the position. And it took a while building it up,
guys probably playing earlier in their career than certainly you'd want.
You don't want a bunch of redshirt freshmen and redshirt sophomores playing in the
Big Ten and what Iowa asks.
And that also goes, I think, a big part of this award is Iowa does ask a lot out of their
offensive line.
They do anticipate that there's going to have to be more that's put on their plate
week in and week out.
Tremendous honor, great to see and great to see the smiles on the faces.
And George Barnett during the presentation, he wanted to stay out of the line light.
He wanted to have the guys get that.
And I think that says a lot about him and what he's doing with this offensive line.
And you throw in the guru, Kirk Farrant, obviously, and a guy that has been willing to evolve.
And he looked at what they've done now these last two seasons after Tim Lester got the job as the offensive coordinator,
as we've seen an offense that looks different, an offense that is doing different things.
And specifically what they're doing in the run game.
Kirk Farrant's zone blocking, of those zone blocking obviously is still a part of what they're
doing, they're doing more than just that. And you're seeing that and certainly the fruits of those
labors with this award for the Iowa football team and the offensive line. We continue here,
lockdown Hawkeyes. Time to talk with David Eichold from 24-7. He's got some takes on us.
What's happening with Emily Rodriguez, the suspension? Do we anticipate she's going to be back?
We'll get into that. We'll talk some men's basketball after their win in Des Moines over the weekend,
plus some football talk. I'll come your way next with David Eichold from 24-7 sports. Stay right there.

joined by David Eicholt now as we talk a little hawk guys getting ready for the bowl game
and opt out though not from the Iowa perspective it will be on the Vandy side of things
as stowers their outstanding tight end he is not going to be there we know Diego Pavey
will be in a guy that likes to party if he's going to run into Diego he is David Eichold
what's up David.
Going on man yeah well we'll see I'll tell you what the weather is going to be nice
I finally checked it out.
It looks like it's going to be about 80 and sunny, I think, the entire week.
So there's a reason I booked a one way to take it.
We'll see when I feel like coming back.
I might hang out for a little bit.
Spend a little bit more time in Florida.
Not a bad thing, as we know, though the weather decent here across the state.
Today, we know how the weather could turn, certainly.
So you're making your way down there to the bowl game.
It is Vanderbilt.
Let's just talk about the game.
Mention Stowers.
He's not going to be there.
I've been back and forth, very conflicted on this one.
And, you know, we got to come up with an opinion and a take.
And I just don't have a good feeling one way or the other for this matchup against Vandy.
There's times the way they run the ball and what Oregon did against Iowa.
I kind of get concerned.
And then it comes the other way.
Where are you right now?
I know we're still almost two weeks away from the game actually happening.
Where are you when we just look at the matchup, not knowing who's all going to be there on both sides?
What do you look at the matchup against Vanderbilt?
Yeah, I mean, I think the line is about right.
And it is unfortunate that Stowers-Mackie Award winner did opt out.
And I'll tell you, that's a different tune than what we kind of heard over the last couple weeks, because when Clark Leah met with the media, he said he was not anticipating any opt-out.
And that was a big reason.
I think a lot of eyes were going to be on this bowl game.
I know it's become cool to devalue bowl games.
I understand it to a certain extent, Trent, but this, to me, is a top five bowl game, like outside the college football playoff.
I think this is going to be a really fun matchup.
Vanderbilt's been extremely physical.
They really haven't played a lot of great rushing offenses, so I'm very intrigued about.
how Iowa's mid-zone game kind of attached them, how Mark Grinowski is going to be utilized.
But, you know, Diego Pavea was one of the most dynamic players in all of college football.
And, you know, what better test for him to be able to go against than a Phil Parker coach defense.
So I do think Vanderbilt should be ranked.
I mean, just a little bit higher and the odds should be in their favor.
They're a really solid football team.
And it really is incredible job that Clark Leah has done with them because, I mean, Vanderbilt was what, trend?
The bottom three, power five football program all time, maybe, maybe arguably the worst.
I mean, they really haven't had a lot of sustained success.
I mean, you could argue this is their most successful season they've ever had.
And I think that's why they're going to be motivated to kind of continue that and to beat what I think is a really good Iowa team.
But from a matchup perspective, I like to see some new wrinkles.
I like for Iowa to try to attack them through the air.
I'm not going to be surprised if they end up doing that.
But, you know, there are some things about this Vanderbilt team.
They play good defense.
man, and they like to push the pace.
And Diego Pavea is the reason behind that.
So we go from the matchup to the Iowa perspective.
They have said all the right things.
Kirk said doesn't anticipate any opt-outs,
but it's different when you get there, guys.
Certainly look at their NFL futures.
Outside the guys, we think maybe we'll depart for the portal.
That'll be happening just two days later when that opens up on January 2nd.
Will you be surprised?
Let's just put it that way.
Will you be surprised if we find out a guy or two,
you know, a day before the game that,
And you know what, not going to play in this game.
Will you be surprised by that?
I would a little bit.
And I'm trying to say this with the utmost respect to the players that I cover
and everything like that.
But Trent, how many players from Iowa are good enough to opt out?
I don't want to come across like that.
But, I mean, you know, I think Logan Jones has already said he's not going to opt out.
You think that Joe Moore award-winning offensive line,
they basically said on their live stream today that they aren't going to opt out.
they kind of laughed it off when they were asked about that.
So Logan Jones is not going to.
Jennings Stunker is not going to.
You know,
Bo Stevens is not.
Mark Grinowski has no reason to opt out.
And,
you know,
obviously he's said all along that he's going to play.
And then you look at some of the members of the secondary,
like T.J.
Hall's up his draft stock significantly.
But after the way his season ended with that kind of nagging shoulder injury,
he wants to play one last time with this team.
I think Xavier Wampa,
you know,
had he been a first or second round draft
grade he could have potentially done that, but I think his leadership and his production has been
very critical for Iowa's back end. So long answer a little bit, Trent, but I would be a little bit
surprised. But then again, it's kind of hard to surprise me from this extent. We see and hear so much
stuff that goes on in college athletics on a daily basis at this point, there's very few jaw-dropping
things where I'm just sitting there mind-blown because when you really think about the grand
totality of things, everything's almost on the table at this point. It really is.
Nothing should surprise us.
Well, wasn't a surprise at all in the recruiting world.
Jax Dijin makes his commitment to Iowa long felt like this was going to be the case.
But I know after Lovar Woods, his departure was announced,
there was a little bit of tepidation out there.
LeVar obviously recruits Western Iowa, Northwest Iowa specifically.
So maybe some concerns there.
No concerns now.
He makes his commitment to Iowa.
The younger brother of Cooper, Jax, is going there.
But a different kind of player, certainly, than older brother Cooper.
oh yeah absolutely i mean i think right now you can throw him in a wide variety of different positions
he is listed as a tight end the offer is at tight end about six four and a half about two 15 and you
look at that tight ender man i i think abdul hodge has to be smiling ear to ear with some of the
talent that he's got there because as we mentioned earlier dj binami in that group and his
emergence over the course of the year combined luke brewer the norwalk iowa native jacks
Dejean, Thomas Meyer.
I mean, you just go up and down the list.
Like, there's a ton of potential in that group.
But yeah, Jackson is a really good athlete.
Again, he's a very productive basketball player as well.
I think he's averaging about 14 and 10 already this early season.
I do think he's become a little bit more physical at a point of attack on blocking.
But as far as hands go, as far as, you know, making the right football plays,
understanding football to a high level.
I think he's got a bunch of upside there.
I think there, I don't think this is going to happen.
And I'm just saying this testament to his athleticism, you could line them up as an outside
edge guy and he'll put on another 40, 50 pounds on him, be about 6.4 and a half, 260, do some
damage there on that line of scrimmage.
But yeah, Jacks is going to be kind of an emerging target.
And the big thing for me is that surprised a lot of people.
When Cooper got to Iowa, it was how good he was so quickly.
But think about the level of football he grew up playing, right?
I mean, he's an Iowa high school legend.
but it's not exactly a big high school.
Like the competition is not great.
So what's that transition period going to be like once Jacks gets on campus at Iowa?
Is he going to be able to adjust like his brother did?
Or is he going to be like most other people and he needs a little bit of time to kind of grow into himself.
So again, I think it's good that he's this size early because he'll know how to move and utilize his body once he gets in that tight end room.
But ultimately, I mean, again, this is a really good pickup, I think, for in Iowa 2027 class,
trend. That's already number 20 overall by the 24-7 sports ranking. So, I mean, you know,
it took them a little bit to get going, but they've been reeling in the commitments here over the last
few weeks. Over to some basketball. Let's start on the women's side ladies first, number one,
Yukon. Boy, they look like number one. My big takeaway, though, it wasn't just the 26 turnovers.
It was a lot of times, it wasn't the ones that they're athletic, they make a play. You know,
it was the time's not going out and catching the ball, right?
just waiting for it to get to you in somebody's steps in front.
It was not being lazy on the past, actually get a little velocity behind it.
It was those kind of turnovers.
You don't have to play perfect, but you've got to play clean.
And the Iowa women certainly didn't play clean on Saturday.
No, they didn't.
You're right.
I think that was the most frustrating thing.
But give credit, like you said it, give credit to Yukon.
I think that is the best Yukon team they've had.
And again, this is no shot at Page Beckers or any other former players.
That's the best and deepest Yukon team I've seen probably the last eight or nine years.
Like Sarah Strong, I thought, was the MVP of that team last year.
She looks like she could be a top 15 WMBA player tomorrow.
Like she is that good.
She's going to be the number one pick whenever she leaves.
I think Yukon's a national title favorite.
But Iowa, you're right, the unforced errors were there.
I think that, you know, you did see some good stretches of play from Layla Hayes when she was out there.
Chit-chat, right?
With what Iowa got out of her in the transfer portal and Wright's willingness to be able to become a shot creator and a shot maker at a high level,
boy, her ceiling looks like it's at a completely different level.
But ultimately, this is a young team going into a hostile environment because, again,
Iowa is going to be the favorite most road venues.
That's just the way the reality's been over the last several years.
I think it's going to continue.
They were not going to be the favorite in that place that close to Yukon and how much they love basketball.
So again, you think about ideally, you think about Layla Hayes,
you think about some of these younger players right now, Trent,
that experience they got and the standard which they can strive for,
I really think that's going to be a difference maker for this program for the rest of the year.
And again, I think two years from now when we're interviewing these girls when they're, you know, juniors and seniors,
they're going to be able to look back at that game and say, that's what really taught me to get to that next level.
But you're right, a lot to improve on.
But again, I also think you wanted to get kind of a foundation of where Iowa's at because, look, they didn't play great Trent.
You're not going to be able to convince me.
It's not a top 15 team in the country.
I still think Iowa's capable of making a sweet 16.
I'm right there with you.
And the upside of this team, I think, is bigger than what we've seen some past years.
It's still a really young team.
Yeah, they got Stolke, who we all remember from the championship game runs and Fearbock
and obviously McCabe on the outside shooting the ball.
We know those, but the rest of the squad is incredibly young.
That leads to the question another young player and a new player, Emily Rodriguez,
didn't make the trip out to New York.
What's the latest on Rodriguez's front?
Yeah, I mean, I think we're going to learn a lot here when Iowa has their next game
against Penn State because obviously word came out about Rodriguez and she's
you know currently away from the team and I have a couple takes on this try now I want
your opinion on this too because when Jan was asked point blank if she was still
part of the program she said as of now yes so again I don't want to vilify Emily
Rodriguez when we don't know the full story right but at the same time do you know
how hard it is to tick off someone like Jan Jensen yes yep who is who is
is Miss Sunshine. It doesn't talk bad about anybody. And again, I don't know the situation
because you think about Emily Rodriguez. She grew up her first 16 years of life in the
Dominican Republic, moved to Florida, two years high school. They're played one year at UCF and
then moved to Iowa. That is such a culture shock and a transition that very few people I feel
like in the Midwest could appreciate or understand. Maybe not appreciate, but understand, right?
So I think there's other aspects to everything.
But if she's not on the sideline against Penn State,
I still think right now there's a chance she comes back,
but I'll be all level with you, man.
I think there's a non-zero chance that Emily Rodriguez is done as a Hawkeye.
I do think that possibility is on the table.
You think about the semester break,
what better way to kind of step away from the team
and move wherever she's going to move or take her next steps on her journey?
This is probably about that time frame.
Again, the door is still open for her, but I'm very interested about how all this develops because, again, I do think there is a chance that Emily has done at Iowa.
Yeah, I would say that's probably the betting favorite.
You know, bringing it to my world, the betting favorites probably that she's going to depart as opposed to return.
It's not a non-zero chance.
I think it blows both ways, but I think that's certainly all the way that I'd be leaning at this point.
Hey, final minute with you, David.
I do think it's trending in that direction.
Yeah, I agree with you on that.
David, last thing, men's team played here in Des Moines,
domination against Bucknell, 94, 39 in that one.
The story to me, though, my biggest takeaway was both Hassan coming in and the applause
when he was splashing down a couple of those threes that he was getting for the fans in attendance.
And then getting Fool Garris going again.
We've talked about a ton.
He is the X factor.
This team is going to be not just a good team, good enough to be the tournament,
but a step beyond that, I think Alveral Fool Garris is the guy that'll take him there.
Yeah, I agree with you 100%.
I wasn't sure if he's going to be the biggest ex-faster going into the year, but the team
flows so much better when he's engaged, right?
When he's out on the perimeter, when he's in the passing lanes, creating steals, getting
those turnovers, get down in transition, the team plays with more of an elevated sense
of confidence.
And again, this is not really great Bucknell team, but I think when Full Garris is confident
and he stays out of foul trouble, Iowa's defense works better.
I think they run better in transition.
And I think there's a lot more pressure off of Bennett,
starts the shoulder to not have to create everything.
Full Garris is capable of that.
So they are the number 25 team.
The AP Top 25th day, I think that's well deserved.
But we're going to see what happens.
I really like this team.
I think it's a lot of fun to watch.

We finish up with more football talk today.
Where does Iowa turn for its next special teams coordinator?
A position that was generated a couple of years back.
And as we know, how important this is for Iowa football to close the gap.
I was not going to year after year out recruit the Ohio states and the Michigan's
and the U.S.s and Oregon's of the world in the Big Ten.
That's not going to happen.
That is the reality that we live in as Hawkeye fans.
But one aspect that they certainly can do is be able to go out there and what they do with special teams.
And LeVar Woods took that job, made it into his own, not just what they did with the kicking game, the return game, special teams units, the gadget plays that we saw, the special plays, the trick plays that they had, it is going to be incredibly big shoes for them to fill.
You also throw into the fact that there's obviously the loss of Drew Stevens.
He moves on.
They have to figure out who the kicker is going to be.
Is it going to be the Bettendorf kit here, the kid that came in, redshirted,
or is it going to be another direction where they look in the portal?
Also the putter position.
Reese Dakin, he struggled this year.
And for a guy that is not from American, Australian punter,
you do wonder about the potential of him,
maybe following LeVar to Michigan State, possibility of him,
maybe just entering the portal and seeing what else is out there,
if that could be a potential down the road after a season
that certainly was a disappointment at the punter position.
There's been talk of some internal candidates, moving guys around shifting positions.
And one idea that I certainly liked is maybe this is something where you can open up things
for a guy like Abdul-Hodge.
He goes and becomes a special team's coordinator.
He goes into that realm coupled with a possibility then with a tight-end coach position being opened up.
Is that something where you could shoehorn Warren Rogero, who came in this year from
Wake Forest, a former offensive coordinator as an analyst this year.
if you find a full-time role for him on the job.
A lot of moving parts.
There's been some talk about some guys that used to be with the program,
but this is going to be a big one,
certainly for Kirk Farrants and what they're going to do.
