Which Big Ten team won the transfer portal both the winter and the spring cycles and what's happening in Northwestern?
Is their coach gonna get fired after this season and more in the portal? That's all in today's Locked on Big Ten squad
You're talking ball with the Big Ten squad sponsored by Game Time
From USC to Ohio State from Michigan to Oregon from Nebraska to Washington
It's the local experts of the Locked on Podcast Network bringing you scoops, breakdowns, and the most comprehensive preview of the upcoming Big Ten weekend.
No hurt feelings and thin skin allowed. Squad up, you're part of the Big Ten Squad.
Happy Thursday everybody and welcome into this edition of the Locked On Big Ten Squad. I'm your host Spencer McLaughlin, Jacob Goens of Locked On Hoosiers is here with Mark Kolkin, Locked On USC,
Zach Anderson-Yaksheimer of Locked On UCLA, and Roma Tomashoff of Locked On Huskies.
We might get Jay Stevens of Locked On Buckeyes, that's all dependent upon the internet cooperating.
But the transfer portal is still technically open, guys can leave the portal at any time,
but you can't enter anymore officially unless there's a delay and you get a waiver or some such nonsense and whatnot.
But, Goins, I want to start with you because Indiana was all about the portal last year.
That's what made up most of their roster that got them to 11 and 2 in the College football playoff.
Did Indiana have the best portal cycle winter and spring in the Big Ten?
Winter, yes, I think they had one of the best, but spring, no,
and they didn't need it. They were extremely quiet, picked up a couple of guys defensively,
one from a linebacker from Maryland that they're going to put on the edge. You also pick up
a lot or a defensive guy from Kent State. That's really all you've done, but you didn't
lose anybody either. And that was the big success story here at Indiana. And that seems
to be a trend with some of the bigger teams in college football is not
losing your players, not necessarily going and getting as many as you can, but just retaining
the guys you have.
And so the winter was awesome for Indiana, picked up offensive lineman, picked up a quarterback.
You picked up some dudes on the defensive side.
That was great.
But the spring, it's been quiet and that's a good thing here in Bloomington.
Yeah. Nothing says thriving program like playing not to lose. That's great. But the spring, it's been quiet. And that's a good thing here in Bloomington. Yeah, nothing says thriving program,
like playing not to lose.
That's the mindset we should all of our teams striving for.
Winter is awesome in Indiana.
I didn't hear that phrase ever.
There's a lot to do, you know?
There's just a lot to do in the winter here.
Like is indoor golf booming, skiing, I hope. Yeah, on the winter. Like is indoor golf booming? What skiing? I hope. Yeah. On the we. That's
the indoor golf bar. Are you talking we skiing too? There's we skiing, right? Yeah, absolutely.
We sports resort, man. You didn't play that growing up. I didn't have a, I didn't have
a we I'd play one at friends houses. sparingly shall we say sparingly.
But yeah anyway speaking of a place where winter is a more enjoyable place to
be let's go to Los Angeles Mark and start with you.
Where would you put USC without knowing all this 17 other cause that's how many
teams are in this conference of course without knowing the 17 other transfer
portal classes off the top of your head.
Do you put USC top third bottom third middle third?
All I know is USC did what they had to do in the winter portal. They collected a couple pieces in
the spring. That's not the conversation you want to be in. You kind of alluded to it earlier.
You don't want to be dipping into the portal a whole lot in the spring. You'd like to have your
team kind of your roster completed, going with the guys you retained, hopefully not losing a bunch of guys. So in the winter, USC went and grabbed 700 pounds from the SEC.
They got Jamal Jarrett, Kishan Silver.
They needed some help on the interior of the defensive line.
That's amazing.
A 700 pound football player.
That's that's incredible.
Incredible.
SEC between two players.
They also added a couple of offensive linemen.
They got the general,
Gian Ray Reed, who looks like he's going to be the starting center for USC this year. They got
him from Syracuse. And then they got DJ Wingfield, a versatile guy who can play left guard, but also
has experience at tackle for the Office of Lyman. Other than that, USC picked up a couple of wide
receivers. Again, one in the winter, one just recently
in the spring from Utah.
In fact, their number one wide receiver is Zacharias Williams, according to Kyle Whittingham.
He was going to be wide receiver one for them this year, going into his true sophomore season.
So I don't know where USC ranks on the scale of top third, middle third, bottom third.
They got what they needed, and that's all I really care about.
Mark, is that a Dodgers jersey you're wearing?
Yes, I root for teams that win, Spencer.
Says the USC host, oh.
No, no, no, Jacob, Jacob, you don't understand.
USC did in fact win a lot one day.
You weren't actually born yet, but it did in fact happen.
It was a real thing, it's documented. None of the awards have been vacated.
The last time Indiana football was relevant was the year I was born.
I'm sorry they were relevant last year Mark.
You were not born last year. We know you can be a little slow Mark but we're not
insulting you that badly.
Indiana was relevant since the year I was born in 1967. And none of those
years matter now. We're coming off a college football playoff berth and only one other
person in this jacket. Indiana is going to be a one hit wonder. Mark it down. Okay. Mark,
what, hold on, Mark, what is, what is one hit wonder in your eyes? How about the-
I'll be playing 10 games. I'll be, they'll press eight this year and they should consider
that a success. And we'll still have a better record than USC.
You can mark my words on that.
Let's make sure.
Bookmark this conversation, everyone.
It is bookmarked.
See this little red light up here in the top of the screen?
That says recording.
Yeah, no, we're bookmarking.
We've got it down.
Yeah.
Well, now Mark has something in common with my ex-girlfriend,
or two things, rather.
They're both Dodgers
and I don't really like either one.
So, that's okay.
We can all, we can all.
Is that what you said?
What'd you say?
Your ex-girlfriend dodged you, is that what you said?
No, no, she's a Dodgers fan.
Yeah, yeah.
Anyway.
That's why you hate everything Los Angeles, Spencer.
Okay, thanks.
Well, that's just that's just not true
No, see now we're somewhere now. What now we're painting therapy session. We're painting we're painting false narratives here. That's okay
Just that's just not true. I go to Los Angeles
Regularly, it's never say hi
Well, well, no, I want to spend my time wisely. Iely? Oh, man. Yeah, I spend time here.
This is what I consider seeing you and whatnot.
Yeah, going to my computer and seeing you,
going like, all right, now I have seen Zach.
And when I go to Los Angeles, I don't
have to feel obligated to hit him up for lunch or something
or anything like that.
It's on you next time, by the way.
Ouch, ouch, but fine.
Talk about UCLA and the poor outside of Niko.
Sneakily, UCLA has done some solid things, right?
Like outside of Niko and Matt
in the quarterbacks of the future.
Yeah, it's funny.
It's not like they did anything in the spring, right?
No, they continued to add beyond Niko and Matt.
And they had people exit, of course, but that's what happens when you bring in the two quarterbacks.
They brought in the cow running back, J.B. and Thomas. They're adding depth at just about a lot of positions.
They're replenishing the secondary. Even lately, they got the former Oregon duck, Roger Pleasants,
who I'm not sure where he's going to stack in with the 10 or many DBs UCLA's brought in in the transfer portal winter and spring.
The Bruins have done quite a bit. I'm not sure they've shored up every weakness in my
mind with what's left to the NFL draft more than USC. And then next thing you know, you
got the likes of quarterback running back. There's a lot to change between the coaching
staff between the players. The Bruins have done a lot. Obviously you look at certain
rankings are as high as number four in the country with their transfer class. You could argue whether they're top four
or top 20. I'm not sure how you're that far off with different, you know, the 24-7 sports,
the rivals. And it's like, okay. But the Bruins have done a lot. And I think we'll see that show
themselves on the field. Yeah, I agree with the metrics disparity, by the way. Like, if, you know,
24-7 has got them 19th. If rivals had them like rivals had him like 12th like alright that's the higher end of a different but that's still kind of
within striking 19 and 4 like I don't I don't really know something is way off
way like they know something we don't I don't know Roman tell us something that
we don't know about Washington to the transfer portal
Well, first of all Spencer, it's it's great to hear that Washington is not the only program
That's just stealing from Oregon left and right, you know, it's great to see that mark I don't know why you're taking that shot at me. I am neutral arbiter of college
Yeah, no personal fill a hair of all things Los Angeles continue that that as well
Not all things just a lot of things Great to see five star offensive tackle Cody Green
make his flip from Oregon to Washington.
That's always great.
But on the transfer portal front,
Washington did grab one of the best overall players
in the transfer portal in Takario Davis,
a cornerback where that's not necessarily
the biggest need in the big 10, right?
But a six four, 200 pound corner
that moves the way he does with those kinds of ball skills.
I'm really excited to see what he brings to the table.
And then Washington, outside of that, they did what was needed. I don't know if
you'd want to call it top third, middle third. Personally, I believe it's in the top third
when you go and like Mark add 700 pounds of beef in terms of getting Ontario Thompson,
getting somebody a couple away from Utah. So I'm a big fan of Tai Tai Ouyangalole from
Arizona is another looks like he's going to be a nice after everything we've seen during
spring practice. Is that another is that another?
Yes
the rain on college football continues
They just have a stranglehold over all of us and they always will 100%
I mean Matteo had a stranglehold on ten and a half quarterbacks last year. So yeah, I mean it's that that's a
That's an app comparison anyway continue and then on the offensive line, you add a nice piece who's going to be a rotational
guy in Garen Hatchet, who comes back after a year at Oklahoma, and Carver Willis, who
is an all Big 12 honorable mention at right tackle. They're going to try him out at left
tackle this year and see how that goes. And right now, it's just you look just throughout
this transfer portal class and it's you address positions of need, which is really important.
Obviously we'll see how that plays out this fall,
but I like the direction they're headed in
when it comes to the transfer portal.
Yeah, I don't know this personally.
I heard from some other guy out there,
but Oregon was very quiet in the spring portal window.
They did lose a punter.
There's a punter out there.
Yeah, he ended up at Washington.
Oh, did he really?
Ah, that's fine. Ended up in Washington. Oh, did he really? Ah. Ah.
Ah, that's fine.
I actually did not know that until this very moment.
You were telling me that for the first time.
That's why you come to Locked On Big Ten Squad.
Yes, it absolutely is, because you get honest reactions like that.
He's not a big distance guy, but downing inside the 2010, chef's kiss.
Oh, we're talking about punters.
We're talking about punters. Look, I'm just trying to give Iowa fans something to be excited
about on this show. I just want to give the people exactly what they want. And I know
exactly what you all want in the second segment, which is another fan duel win total discussion.
That is coming your way next

Continuing on as the season is just over four months away.
How great is that to be able to say?
I mean, four months.
I mean, we're just we're not that far.
We have made it through four months of offseason or for people
that didn't make bowl games they cared about or make a bowl game
at all.
It's been five months of the offseason.
But alasas goings.
I want to start with you because our team of the day is none other than someone
who we overlooked as we were progressing up the fan to a win totals,
the Wildcats of Northwestern.
And when you talk about coaches that could be gone after this
2025 season, I wouldn't put David Braun at the top of the list.
I certainly wouldn't put him at the bottom though,
because it might be another rough one there for the wildcats.
Their win total is three and a half, three, just three and a half.
What you go, you go ahead, Jacob floors yours. Yeah, unfortunately. I mean,
it's, it's kind of,
it's kind of like a storybook thing that we just overlooked Northwestern
because I think everybody overlooks Northwestern
because it's Northwestern.
And three, three or three and a half,
is that their total?
Three and a half, three and a half.
There are no whole numbers at FanDuel, Jacob.
Don't be silly.
I mean, you have road trips to Illinois,
I was gonna say to USC, but I'm sure they'll get that done.
At Penn State, you have Oregon, Oregon week three of the college football season.
I mean, Northwestern, I don't even trust them to go on the road and beat two lane
week one, much less win games in the big 10.
So by the way, by the way, speaking of Tulane, can anybody in here tell me who
Tulane might be starting at quarterback?
I'll give you a hint.
He was in the big 10 last year, starting games regularly for a team that was over 500.
I thought you were going to say Ty Thompson.
No, no, no.
Ty Thompson is a tight end now.
Really?
I did not know that.
Oh, did you not know that?
Yeah, he got he got a start in the Gasparilla Bowl against Brandon Olson's Gators and he went
like 8 of 21 with three interceptions.
It wasn't good.
It was fantastic development.
So they moved him.
We're not having that conversation right now.
We're just not.
And so the question that you proposed, Spencer, we're all on our heels.
The answer is Brendan Sullivan, the one-time Iowa Hawkeye just transferred there because of
an off-field incident involving a potentially stolen car and TJ Finley with a legal situation
that is yet to resolve itself. He's due in court in June, but the journeyman TJ Finley was going
to be two-lane starter. He is not with the program anymore. They bring in Brendan Sullivan
because of the changes that Iowa underwent
with the transfer portal at quarterback.
And so that is who Northwestern will be,
will potentially be taking on.
How about that?
How about that?
The more you know, again,
another reason why you come to the Locked on Big Ten squad.
100%.
Hit that subscribe button.
That's right. Hit that subscribe button.
That's right. Yeah.
Yeah. Hit the...
Smash it.
Yeah. However you're watching this or listening to this. No, give me under. I mean, let's
not, let's not kid ourselves here. They may not beat Tulane week one. And if they don't,
then it's going to be a disaster. Coach will be fired and you know, the rebuild will begin
once more in Northwestern. So now get me under and easily get me under. All right, Mark
Do you have the gusto to take them over three and a half?
Keep in mind Arizona State's win total last year was four and a half and they won the big 12
I'll be honest with you. I really don't care about the segment right now. So if you want to go to Zack, it's Northwestern
Right. Does anybody really care? Yeah, the Northwestern fans out there, big 10 fans who want to know.
You've been talking about the two-lane quarterback and you just completely lost me for the second.
So I'll take Northwestern and the Under. Next.
The Under. Zach, anyone going to go over here?
The most interesting thing about Northwestern, they're still playing games at their, I believe, practice field. I visited that practice field. It's a nice little makeshift stadium. Can
anybody say where they're playing their last two home games of the year?
Wrigley field.
Yep. That's against Michigan and Minnesota. Those are going to be L's at Illinois. That's
an L at USC. That's an L at Nebraska. Doesn't sound good.
Hosting UCLA. That's a win. Yeah, no, I agree.
When they're playing, what, Louisiana Monroe in October,
could that be their first win?
I mean, obviously they play Western Illinois week two.
So they will get a couple of wins.
Now, if UCLA is losing to Northwestern,
then I'll just jump into a freezing cold ice bucket
and just shiver.
I don't know, there's nothing.
Can we make that official declaration? if UCLA loses to Northwestern?
In September. It's in Southern California, it'll be hot, so it won't be painful.
Okay, but here's the thing. If you make it cold enough, anything could be painful or uncomfortable.
Yeah, we can make it something that, you know, and still UCLA will it will make you wear the Niko Jersey. Those two things could
Oh, yeah. Oh, no, that's the most you see anything possible
That's been that's well documented at this point for any Bruins fans out there who don't know
Because of my lack of affinity for the Bruins
I have extended an olive branch if they win seven games or more
I will buy with my own money a Niko Jersey and I will wear it on the show for one for one
One show one one show. Oh, yeah, we're that's like a week straight man. Yeah. All right, you know what fine
I'm confident enough. I'll up the ante week straight a week of wearing a Niko jersey on the show that
I'll do a nice bucket challenge if you see I lose this to turn northwestern. Okay. Yeah see now
We're now now we're having fun. Now we're raising the stakes on the college football season. It's just over four months away.
Role you're going you're going you're going under Roman any any hope for the wild. Look, I don't even know if
I know you watched them last year. It wasn't I mean y'all share the same colors. You don't like you don't even like you don't have like some weird connection with the whole purple thing.
Not really. Can you not touch two fingers together like that again, please?
What what bothered you about
You didn't like the movie et when he was growing up. It's okay. Yeah, obviously. Yeah, obviously anyway, sorry
Yeah, no, I just yeah Jacob. I don't Jacob, I don't really know where that question came from.
I've literally never thought about that before in my entire life.
I'm just trying to keep Mark entertained, man.
I don't know.
You know what?
That's fair.
But no, I don't know that any of us can do that at this point.
No, no, I'm good.
You guys are still stuck on Wee, and I'm just like,
I don't think we're going to be able to do this.
Yeah, no hope for Northwestern.
I mean, we don't have to spend that much more time on it.
Yeah, I know.
They don't want to give him the big 10.
Can I say that?
I don't know.
Here's the thing.
I don't know that the job would come open.
Because two years ago, if not for Dion,
David Braun would have been one of the best coaching stories
in all of college football.
He went from one and 11 to eight and five,
but he did it at Northwestern, so nobody cared.
But then they took a big step back.
And you know what?
Just for the sake of it,
I'm save the graphic guy here, if you will. Northwestern going four and eight this year.
Four and eight. I'll take them with wins over Western Illinois, who once had a losing streak
as a football program of about 27 games. True story within the last couple of years. They'll
beat Louisiana Monroe.
I think they can beat Purdue.
And you know what?
They're just going to find an upset of like Minnesota or UCLA or the win at Tulane or
yeah, the win at USC.
We're going to face really hard because he can't get over it now.
I'm just mad we don't get to play.
Here, here, here's, here's the most engaged Mark will be this entire segment because I'm
going to give him a question directly.
Mark, what would your reaction be if USC lost to Northwestern at home?
I will be the first person chasing Lincoln Riley out of his office.
Okay. Okay. OK.
Big stakes in that game for the Trojans.
They might be meager 18-point favorites or whatnot.
But hey, US or not USC.
Ohio State was like a 20 and 1 half point favorite
against Michigan.
So you truly never know.
For the final segment, we're shifting back to the portal
and a question for everyone here in the chat
that we have not answered yet

All right, last note on the portal for today's show.
Goins, we'll start with you
and then we'll continue in the merry-go-round.
Who is one player that you are glad
to have seen leave your program in the transfer portal.
Oh my goodness. Wow. Okay. I was not ready for that question.
Yeah, I know. That's why I'm in this chair and you're in that one.
That I was glad to see leave?
That you saw leave and you're like, good. Don't want him. Don't want him here.
You I'll allow you to broaden it out to
graduated players who you just didn't want to see anymore
I mean I'm looking at it just to I mean
I don't know I don't know I don't have an answer to
to that because everybody that left for Indiana was like
alright cool like good luck you know what I mean it wasn't like
thank God this guy left.
Indiana didn't really have any of those types of guys.
And the ones that left,
were they gonna get repped?
Some of them, but other guys,
you didn't even know who they were most of the time.
And so I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for you
because I don't think there was anybody like that,
that Indiana was just trying to get rid of.
I just, I don't think that guy existed.
All right, Mark, I'll throw it to of. I just I don't think that guy exists.
All right, Mark, I'll throw it to you. I imagine you'll have an answer here.
You're not going to get the level of arrogance that Indiana football all of a sudden has
after one year. Yeah, because USC is a notably non arrogant fan base mark.
Right. Okay, that's a that's a notable
difference. I will concede that
point. I'm just hoping we are we
are not operating with, you know,
red and gold blinders here.
I know you think the answer is
going to be the quitter Bear
Alexander.
Oh, that's not actually where I was
going.
And it's not a manual play.
No, I didn't know.
I wasn't thinking about that one either. OK, so I'm going with and I think I've actually given this answer before on this show
I am not in the least bit upset that Zachariah Branch is no longer on
That is who I thought you'd say
Yeah, yes, Spencer
Yeah, but but so what explain that mark cuz this is a guy who had a good freshman season, is
an explosive potential returner and a solid receiver as well.
Like, why do you think that USC's offense can be better without him there?
So he showed potential to be an explosive wide receiver as a freshman.
As a true sophomore, he showed that he has no hands.
I don't know what happened with his return game,
but he literally, he became afraid.
He stopped returning punts, he stopped returning kicks,
and you noticed it immediately when they put McKay-Lemon in,
when they said, no, enough of this.
Go show everybody how it's done.
in when they said, you know, enough of this, go show everybody how it's done.
I think there's times where you're really good in high school and you show potential your freshman year because you're limited. You don't, they're not showing you a whole lot. They're just giving you
little bits and pieces, little glimpses. But then all of a sudden the spotlights turned on.
You have to be the man and you're not able to ride to that occasion and then all of a sudden you're in the locker room and
You know there's been reports that he wasn't dealing with his
His sophomore season very well a lot of blame game going around a lot of finger pointing. How come I'm not getting this pass
Why isn't this happening? So?
Sometimes less talent is better for the locker room. I
Love that you went full bench warmers there pronouncing sophomore with three syllables.
Well, that is actually the correct way to say it.
That's amazing.
That's amazing.
That's a very good way to say it.
Dramatic or...
Yeah, I mean, if you're in Britain, sure, but I think we're talking about an American-based game.
Last I checked. You all are correct American based game last last I check.
Zach.
You all are correct.
You should never say words correctly.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, fair enough.
Anyway, Zach, anybody that fits this description?
I mean, there's been a lot of players that have left UCLA, very talented players that
have found new homes and I wish they would have stayed at UCLA.
I'm gonna go unique here.
Going with the kicker, Blake Glesner, he never really had a home here.
When he had a chance at UCLA, he did not have the best opportunity. He came from Montana State,
went to UCLA in December. He went into the portal, Mateen Baganian, the former Cow Kickers,
run away with that job. If you want more of a real answer, I'm not rooting against this kid,
but Justin Martin is a quarterback. If you're trying to go from the guy who had the most veteran experience in the UCLA locker room, he left. I'm not sure I've seen enough potential from him to have seen UCLA be led by him to have a winning year, where I thought maybe with Joey Aguilar, they could have done that. And then obviously that transition to Nico Iamaleava, I think UCLA is doing okay at the quarterback position and definitely at the kicker position. Bam, bam.
I think UCLA is doing OK at the quarterback position and definitely at the kicker position.
Bam, bam.
Roman, I will preface posing this question to you
by saying players who did not necessarily play
can fit the category.
Yeah, I thought about going that route.
I'm not going to, because I wanted
to talk about the interior of the offensive
line where Spencer, as you know full well, neutral arbiter of college football.
That's how much Washington's offensive line struggled last season.
And one guy who was a bit of a big 10 journeyman is Enoch DeMahai from Ohio state where he
spent four years over there.
I know fans weren't necessarily very happy with him and as Washington needed to reload
their depth, they brought him in for his final season of eligibility and he struggled a little bit on the interior of the offensive line.
And now that he has graduated and moved on, one guy that Washington fans are really excited about is Richard Freshman Pocky Fee now.
Now, if you talk to anybody around the program about this guy, he's a really exciting, big athletic offensive lineman who might have a future at tackle.
Right now, it looks like he's going to end up starting at one of the guard spots,
I would say left guard at this point in time.
And it's just one of those things where a lot of what last season was for
Washington coming off a national championship run, losing 40 plus players,
including a whole bunch of the NFL draft.
I know it's like 15, 16 guys at the very end of it, including UDFAs and
everything like that.
But just seeing what Washington's done in terms of reloading, Pocky Fee now looks like he's
a big part of their plans along the offensive line.
So seeing Inafi Maiha, who was certainly very frustrating
to watch at times in 2024, move on,
it's just one of those things where, you know,
with Damod Williams taking over in 2025,
there's certainly more to be excited about
along the offensive line this year.
You know, Roman, you might get this reference.
You might not.
But one thing I was thinking about as the answer
to this question unfolded was sometimes coaching staffs
need to have the option removed to play certain players
because they can get stuck with familiarity
or because they know the guy or like him personally.
I think about this with the Mariners right now
and Trent Thornton.
Like, so not good.
Like that was what I thought of with this question was like,
look, he might be a perfectly fine guy,
but Dan Wilson needs to not have the ability
to put him in the gate.
Like it just, the option needs to be needs to be removed.
You got to get rid of it. So on that optimistic note we'll wrap the lockdown pick 10 squad
for the week. Jacob Gowans locked on Hoosiers, Mark Kolkin locked on USC, Zach Anderson,
Yaks Amor locked on Bruins, Roman Tomashov locked on Huskies, I'm Spencer McLaughlin
locked on all over the place. Appreciate everyone listening. I will see you next time.
Until then, hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
