Will Niko wind up in the Big Ten? Is UCLA gonna do something exciting on the football field,
whether he's there or not? That and more on today's Locked On Big Ten Squad.
You're talking ball with the Big Ten Squad, sponsored by Game Time. From USC to Ohio State,
from Michigan to Oregon, from Nebraska to Washington, it's the local experts of the
Locked On Podcast Network bringing you scoops, breakdowns, and the most comprehensive preview of the upcoming Big Ten weekend.
No hurt feelings and thin skin allowed. Squad up,
you're part of the Big Ten Squad.
Happy Thursday everybody and welcome into the Big Ten Squad.
I'm your host Spencer McLaughlin, Roman Tomashoff of Locked On Huskies is here.
Mark Kolkin of Locked On USC and Zach Anderson- Mark Culkin of Lockdown USC and Zach Anderson Yaksheimer of Lockdown UCLA as well. Sit back, relax and get ready for a four man squad.
Look, we kind of resemble myself this week. Small, but very, very mighty.
So Zach, we start with you. I just have,
I could go for an hour on the Niko situation,
but UCLA has always kind of been seen
as the fallback option and then,
ah, no, UCLA's not really in the fold anymore.
Is there any chance that that could change
and NECO winds up at UCLA?
I mean, I hope it doesn't change.
There's no reason he should be UCLA's,
UCLA should be that fallback option for him.
He should find a way to, I don't know, go to USC.
He goes elsewhere, who knows? There's no other, there's no real fit for him other than going back to Tennessee
and asking for forgiveness. But going to UCLA after what his brass did with Madden, his
younger brother, just spurning UCLA and the commitment of the period to go to Arkansas
where he never even visited, I think it's ridiculous that Nico would even consider UCLA
and that UCLA would consider him back. Well, I don't think it's inherently ridiculous since would even consider UCLA and that UCLA would consider him back
Well, I don't think it's inherently ridiculous since he's from Southern, California
I just think you know once you get past that fact everything else about it makes very little sense
But mark would USC even kick the tires on the stitch would it would it be worth it?
Because I don't think it's the worst fit in the world, but I mean, I don't know
Yeah, no, this is a non-starter Would it be worth it? Cause I don't think it's the worst fit in the world, but I mean, I don't know.
Yeah, no, this is a non-starter. He's not coming to USC.
It sucks that this young man has to deal with this,
but this is kind of the environment he brought on himself.
This started back in high school.
He's had commitment issues going back to high school
where he was at Warren High School,
then I'm gonna transfer to Long Beach Poly, but I'm only going to play in certain games.
So Long Beach Poly says, well, we don't need that type of, you know, person on our roster.
He ends up back at Warren. You know, Zach brings up his younger brother, you know,
leaving the Bruins at the altar on signing day. Now, all of a sudden, Nico wants to come back to
California, maybe use UCLA as a, you know, call thirds because you know he was interested in UCLA coming out of
high school then he ends up at Tennessee. What Nico needs right now he needs to
just rehabilitate his image. Forget NIL, forget the money part of it. Come back to
California, go to a place like a San Diego State, San Jose State, you know, pick Fresno
State, pick a school that's not an FBS team and show that you know what, you can be a
quarterback, you can be a team leader, you might even gravitate some players and recruits
to come with you who are from Southern California. That's the best thing for him. But right now,
if you're going to go to UCLA, I'll tell you what, that would
take some major cojones, because he's gonna have to answer a lot of questions. And it's
not just about, you know, UCLA, but it's about what does it mean to be a division one quarterback
at this level? You know, what's important to you? Because right now, he's getting some
really bad advice. This was the reset college football needed though. Like I said, I'm sorry that
it's happening to him because by all accounts he is a good young man. But this is the reset
college football needed. I'm happy with all these programs kind of colluding together
and say, no, you had 2.5 million in your back pocket. You decided you want 4 million. Tell
you what, let's teach you a lesson that there are consequences with decisions.
Here's a million.
You still like playing football.
Okay, a couple of things.
First of all, just to be clear, Mark, San Diego State, San Jose State, Fresno State
are indeed all FBS programs.
I'm trying to power forward.
I didn't want as high and mighty as the big 10 squad to be up and be like
San Diego State they're basically the FCS man
Yeah, I mean I've thought of San Diego State before I think their quarterback situation is
Okay, bet but do they have four million dollars? Is that what it's going to come down to Roman?
I want I want to get you in on this
because I actually agree with part of what Mark said,
which is a rarity, but hey, blind squirrels and acorns.
But I think the reset part of it
is actually a good thing for the sport,
where a school and now the entire sport
is just putting their foot down saying,
no, okay, enough is enough.
Yeah, in 2001, you want to make the case
that there was too much power in institutions and not enough for players.
It's kind of hard to argue that the pendulum, though,
has swung the other way and it has swung too far.
And now the schools and athletic departments are saying and coaches are saying, no,
we're not just going to give you four million dollars
just because you're a super talented guy.
Oh, absolutely. Where the first thing I said when I saw that Tennessee would be moving on from Nico was good for Tennessee
Was they're doing the right thing by doing this by not giving it into his demands where I feel you know, Zach
I'm sorry, but you know mark at USC Spencer at Oregon when we were well
I am neutral arbiter of all things college football. Where's that?
Where's this Oregon label coming from that?
Well, this is army green this is locked on army green there is no team on here whatsoever
I don't stand for such accusations of bias. I bet you it says ducks on the back
Yeah, if I if I put on a piece of tape and written it in sharpie sure. It still counts.
Before Spencer had to go and defend himself here for no reason when I was gonna you know not just
totally run down Oregon for the first time in my life I was like if if my whole thought process
with when this originally happened was if Nico can ask for four, Bo Nicks in 2023, Caleb Williams in 2023, Michael Pennex in 2023,
they should ask for 30. If Nico stat line from 2024 was anything remotely in the, just in the
ballpark of somebody who deserved $4 million, I think the Tennessee would have been okay with
doing that. But it's ridiculous. And Zach, when you know, UCLA got in the mix, and then now has seemingly
backed off, I kind of I kind of felt bad, because it's just one
of those things where it feels like way too much of a headache
at this point. So getting a hard reset, and finding a way to go
and you know, remake your image, just find a way to prove that
you can't miss long on every other throw where there's,
there's a thread I saw on Twitter
of just five minutes of him missing long
on wide open receivers time and time again.
If you can go find a way to rehabilitate yourself,
not in terms of how you actually play as a quarterback
and hone in on some of the things that made you a class
to be a class mechanic in high school, great.
But you haven't proven that yet at any point
outside of some flashes, some flashes.
Yeah, I think there is a twofold shift that he has to undergo. And I definitely, definitely
do not believe that this is all him there. There are external factors that are driving
the bus here. And I do echo what Mark said that I feel
bad he's at the center of it but it is kind of a reset that I felt like was
going to come in college football eventually because he's out there asking
for four million he's capable of being a four million dollar a year quarterback
he is not that right now so he's left looking for a situation where someone's
gonna be willing to overpay for him and he's going to rehabilitate that program is going to be able to rehabilitate
his image and also his play on the football field.
Like I don't know. I don't know who that is. Everyone's pulling out. If UCLA is like, oh,
we're good. North Carolina is like, oh, we're good. He entered the portal with do not contact
tag. Maybe that's changed by the time you're all listening to or watching the show.
But I just I don't know where else he could wind up. But back at Tennessee,
Tulane even pulled out of the show. Yeah. That's all you really need to know.
I don't think Tulane would have had the money.
Tulane could find a million bucks. Tulane's not a poor school.
No, no, no, no. They can find a million. But if he was,
if he was sticking to the $4 million number, we know they don't have that,
because that's what their quarterback just got to go to Duke.
Like we've all been agreeing upon.
We needed it a reset right now,
because this actually started during the playoffs.
If those allegations are true
that he was trying to hold out for more money
to play in the playoff game,
college football needed this a lot.
I mean, it needed it desperately
because we're at a stage right now
where the tail is literally wagging the dog
and you can't have it.
The schools have to remain in power
in some way, shape or form.
No one's saying the players shouldn't be being,
shouldn't get paid,
but it shouldn't be free agency on steroids.
And that's what it's turned into,
where you've got parents who think they're agents,
and they're looking out for their own self-interest.
They're not even looking out
for their kids' self-interest anymore.
No, no.
Like anybody who's gotten to Nico's camp
and encouraged him to go down this path
doesn't have his best interest in mind.
He's now an incredibly toxic
naming college football. He's struggling to find a quality
there is no way no way his football situation in 2025 is
better than what it would have been if he'd stuck it out and
stayed at Tennessee. I don't know that he's going to get as
much money as Tennessee was already paying him. I don't
think he's going to be on as good of a team with a coach as
good as Josh Hyple. I think it's all kind of a mess.
We might circle back to that,
but we are gonna circle back to the UCLA Bruins
just because Zach is here.
With our continuing trend on over or under
the Bruins in 2025, that's coming up next.

Alright so Nico or no Nico, Zach, UCLA will play football this year.
How many people will be watching?
I mean, I hope you will at least, but I don't know.
Give me a snapshot of optimism for UCLA
going into Sean Foster's year two.
They have one of the lowest win totals in the Big 10.
Do you think that's a sign of disrespect
to what you guys have down there?
I think to Sean Foster's building,
something doesn't mean they're gonna get eight, nine wins something doesn't mean they're going to get eight, nine
wins doesn't mean they're going to a playoff and they'll be in Indiana.
Of course, the super optimistic fool like I am could think, Oh, Indiana 2.0 this year.
But it's really trying to figure out what the quarterback situation is.
That was already the question prior to any Niko rumors, anything.
It's what can they do with a one year rental with the Juco extension for NCAA eligibility?
They have Joey Aguilar coming from App State.
They don't really have a future behind them
and it doesn't seem like Aguilar is running away
with the job at Spring Camp, which is a bit of an uh-oh.
The defense, which was good a couple of years ago,
Akaka Molloy had some remnants of that last year.
That's mostly all gone.
But a new offensive coordinator,
which should breathe life into the offense with Tinas and Sri, and then you mix in a Clackamalloy, hopefully working
some magic. This is a team that I think could surpass that low over-under for the win total.
It's four and a half. So repeat of last season and you're going over if you want to spell some optimism in there.
But make, make, make your declarative take right now, Zach, over under four and a half.
Cause I got to tell you, I don't love their schedule.
Boy, I don't know.
I think they can go over now.
I'm an optimistic fool.
So I'll make that clear bias blue.
I'm wearing it all.
Spencer doesn't, he wants to go to neutral arbiter.
We know he's wearing green.
Army green, army, army green.
Not even the army black knights.
This is just, this is just US army green
with locked on on it and nothing else.
Sir, yes sir.
Okay, so UCLA is,
UCLA is gonna go over, whether it's by the five,
whether you get some pins in the lane and call it bowling,
whatever it might be, I'm saying UCLA gonna go over, whether it's by the five, whether you get some pins in the lane and call it bowling, whatever it might be, I'm saying UCLA can go over
and might go, you know, UCLA had a horrible start last year
and had all the reason to give up
and they had a good strong finish.
And that was with the horrible offense
and unexpected presence from the defense
and some big wins down the stretch.
I just, I'm not gonna come out here
and say they're gonna win eight, nine games,
but I think there's room for optimism
that they can pass four and a half to five to six.
Okay.
So, all right, Roman, you can weigh in here first.
Mark can let all of his thoughts fester
and then he can dunk on him.
He can dunk on him at the end.
Here's Zach, where are the five wins?
I don't see the five wins.
You might be losing week two at UNLV.
I just don't see that.
I think it's a fascinating game.
What was it?
In December, I sat at a flat tire
next to some of the UNLV football players
when they're going to the LA bowl.
As much as they're cool, I think they can beat UNLV.
Doesn't mean that was the coaching switch
and what they've done that they won't beat UCLA,
but I like to believe they can get it.
Can we go back to what you just kind of slid in there?
You ran into the UNLV football team
when they had a flat tire on their bus?
There was a couple of players,
this was very early in their trip in December.
I had a flat tire, ran over something on the 110 freeway
in the South Bay, pulled over.
Another car came behind me with the flat tire.
And there were like three players
from the UNLV football team who were telling me,
oh, such and such, you're in the Heisman,
this is what happens.
Oh, this is cool, we met the new coach.
And this is right before they went out and got the dub.
How about that?
Zach Anderson Yoxheimer, a connected man to UNLV football.
OK, Roman, you see five wins for UCLA here?
I'm seriously struggling to see where they come from.
So as I look at this, it's going to be really funny.
Because let's run in Zach's hypothetical world
here where they do beat UNLV.
This three game winning streak is going to be the best part
of your fall, Zach.
Where you UNLV, New Mexico, Northwestern,
and then who's the other win in here?
Maryland?
Oh, absolutely, bring on Maryland.
That's your most winnable big 10 game.
I think that's more winnable than at Northwestern
because you have to go on the road to Evanston
in that makeshift stadium.
Like it feels weird.
Crazy things can happen.
Yeah, for a UCLA win.
I think we can make the math work for five.
Absolutely.
Okay, name me the five.
Let's see.
I'm cocky enough to think maybe they can mess around
against Utah.
Week one to get one of those dumb college football
wins that makes no sense. Like a week one where you're like oh what happened there. I think UCLA at home could do something
weird there. Obviously the other two non-conference games and you mix it Northwestern you mix the likes of Maryland. Last year
they messed around and won it at Nebraska. Nobody saw that coming. Not saying that that's gonna happen this year or anything, but weird things can happen in the stage of a season
where a team could overlook UCLA
and the Bruins could steal one again this year
and that can account for the five to six wins.
Should they, are they good enough?
Do they have a lot of question marks?
Absolutely.
But as I said, I already qualified this.
Optimistic fool, you're looking at him,
you're hearing him speak right now.
The last three games of the season.
I mean, the most winnable one is this guy's team.
That's Roman for those listening on podcast.
That's the most winnable game.
And I like Washington's quarterback a heck of a lot more
than whatever UCLA is doing.
Like Roman, you got any worry going to the Rose Bowl
late in the year?
Not really.
I'm planning on being down there.
Like this is my mom's birthday weekend and everything.
So I'm expecting, you know, a nice solid victory, right?
Right before Thanksgiving.
I think that's gonna be a whole lot of fun to be at coming,
coming home and doing all that sort of stuff.
But I look at UCLA and I say all of the best players
that impressed me when they were up
here last year, they're all gone.
There's not a lot that I look at this UCLA team on paper and say, oh, that's somebody
I'm going to watch out for.
That's somebody I'm going to watch out for.
I don't see it.
Okay.
Mark's been waiting patiently like a kid in a candy store ready to go crazy and fill up
his bag.
So you go ahead, Mark Mark and make your case for UCLA
over under four and a half wins.
So I'm gonna surprise a few of you here,
a few of us here.
Last year was kind of atypical
of how UCLA football comes out of the box.
People don't realize they're on the quarter system.
Those guys don't even start classes
until beginning of October, it feels like. So they typically are always focused on football,
football, football. I can see these guys coming out of the box for no, and then losing their
final eight. Okay, okay, okay. The first four are Utah, at UNLV, New Mexico, who has a new coach, and at Northwestern.
Remember, no classes, they get to focus on football.
These aren't impossible.
This isn't Murderers Roe Spencer.
Let's not try and make this into this is a really-
No.
But it's Kyleyle it's i mean
mark you of all people should know kyle wittingham's pretty good kyle wittingham's got one and a half
foot out the door right now i'm not even sure he's gonna be the head coach from the season kicks off
i'm kidding he will be next year i don't know exactly again you're kind of tempted no no yeah
no i mean he said like yeah our defensive coordinator is the head coach what i'm just
saying he's still there for a reason.
Unless they can find a quarterback that's
going into his 10th year of college football,
I'm not sold on Kyle Whittingham this year with Utah.
Again, I can see them.
I didn't say they're going to do it.
I can see it happening, where they go 4-0,
because again, it's not a murderer's row.
And then all of a sudden, oh, here's classes,
here's the real part of our football schedule.
It was eight in a row.
I can see it.
I can see it happen.
Somehow that was an even greater prediction
than I ever could have hoped for.
Just take your rival and predict, you know what?
I think they could give everyone some hope and life
and then they just suck the rest of the year.
That's what the Big Ten squad is really all about.
And we've still got another segment to discuss.
That's Poof.
You didn't hear a lot of it back.
What's yours?
You didn't hear a lot of it back, did you?
I mean, like, well, four, no,
I'll take like a 25, ranked being 25th in week five or six and
then you would you would which you probably would be quite frankly if you're if you're
for no you have the win against Utah you get a road win I would say okay you're ranked
that would be a lot of hype now who's talking to be crushing you're not gonna get ranked
because you beat Utah in Northwestern yeah Yeah, you could. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I think that's a fair point.
Is Utah preseason ranked?
Uh, we don't have preseason top 25 yet.
I think that it gives you some.
Preseason rankings is Utah ranked right now?
Uh, it depends on who's preseason top 25 you look at.
We're probably saying no.
Probably. I mean, I mean, probably.
But then the other consideration is UNLV was on the doorstep
of the playoff last year and they have Dan Mullin.
I don't know, I've seen crazier things happen
in the top 25 poll in the first month
than that 4-0 resulting in a top 25 ranking.
I think, I don't think that's impossible at all.
I do think it's impossible to go 4-0 in those games.
But hey, that's just me.
Just for the record, I'm hammering the under
on 4 1 1 2 for a second straight year on UCLA.
I was only right last year.
I mean, I got nervous once they started winning games.
Of course, I was like, oh boy, that prediction's,
no, looking so hot, but they went under 5 1 1 2. Yeah, I'm not, I don't predictions now looking so hot but they went under five and a half
Yeah, I'm like I'm kind of down on that Is anybody here up or down on the transfer portal and the buzz surrounding our the programs that's coming up next

Damon Williams is in the po-
No, I'm kidding.
I'm kidding.
I'm kidding.
I'm kidding.
That was a joke.
It was flying.
It is crazy.
The old line, I think it's from Mark Twain
that a lie gets all the way around the world
before the truth has a chance to put its pants on.
There was a
Nico getting $4 million.
Is that the
Yeah, exactly.
No, no, no, that's actually that's actually not happening.
That was a fake tweet that was going around.
And but you know, the internet is the internet.
So what are you going to do?
Right Roman?
But portal wise for Washington, good, bad, neutral.
Where's where's Washington at right now?
I mean, if we're talking the spring portal here, neutral,
like Washington needs a punter like that's that.
I'm told Iowa is plentiful.
Yeah, that's that's what I hear.
Yeah. The Boise State punters in the portal, you know, there's something going on.
I'm told Iowa always has a bountiful harvest of leg swingers. Yeah, this is what I hear. Yeah. The Boise State punters in the portal, you know, there's something going on there. I'm told Iowa always has a bountiful harvest of leg swingers.
Yeah, this is what I hear.
I know, you know, since this is just technically locked on Pac-12,
we're still not all that familiar with that.
So, yeah, no, RIP.
But I with Washington right now, I'm I'm just looking at it and I say,
we're going to see.
Mark with the water bottle.
We're at Washington is over the 85 man scholarship limit I'm just looking at it and I say, we're going to see the water puddle. Right.
Washington is over the 85 man scholarship limit that they've
sort of self-imposed at this point in time to maximize
revenue share and feel things like that.
So we're probably going to see if a couple guys hit the
transfer portal.
I'm curious to see if Jetfish wants to, you know, maybe go
out and bring in another edge rusher or another offensive
lineman depending on how things work out.
Personally, I'm in the camp that he's gonna run
with some of the young guys he has on the roster.
So outside of a parter,
where they're going to be very active
in the transfer portal market
after bringing in a dusty Zimmer from Pro Kick Australia.
And he was on campus for exactly one practice
and decided to go back to Australia.
So outside of that, doesn't seem like-
How rough are those Washington facilities, man?
Hey man, that that's that he was
That's a different discussion for a different day
He's like nah, like what did he step on that does he hate water or something? What's the problem something like that?
No, it's it seems like he was just a little unfamiliar with how football
really worked on on this side of the Pacific Ocean so was he under the
impression he was gonna have to tackle or something like yeah probably that
only happened that only happens once in a blue moon but Mark USC and the spring
transfer portal window what what what happens does anything happen here in the
coming days so so far right USC's lost in the most recent announcement.
One player that's going to the transfer portal. He was a Redshirt freshman defensive end Lorenzo Cowan.
I see USC picking up one to five guys the most. The roster is pretty complete.
They need just to fill in some experience holes maybe for some depth pieces
an offensive lineman definitely at linebacker and then wide receiver cornerback or the other
two positions that people have some mild concerns about. I can see more players possibly leaving
USC than USC bringing in just because of what USC did during the off season so far.
USC is fine with the transfer report right now.
There's not a lot of talk going on that, my God,
we're gonna lose our quarterback to Tennessee like Washington.
With the Mon Williams taking the 3 million to go.
Just we're clear that is not true.
It's just- Yes.
We're just throwing jabs at Roman because secretly we don't like him for no reason in particular. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Just we're clear. That is not
true. It's just. Yes. We're
just throwing jabs at Roman
because secretly we don't like
him for no reason in
particular but. Wow. Zach,
nope. It should be pretty
quiet with the USC portal
this morning. Zach, I don't
think anybody that's uh
team-wise represented in this
uh squad show today could
benefit more potentially from the portal than UCLA because hey if you start with one of the three or four worst rosters in the
conference hey you can improve a lot so they gonna go out and be busy I mean if
the craziest headline is Nico coming to UCLA then I would say I think that would
signal busy that counts bring portal I think the one thing is Caden Robinson
who came from App State with Joey Aguilar,
he was deemed ineligible, didn't get that waiver to extend his career.
So UCLA might be in the room looking for a receiver.
And then one of their punters just hit the portal.
So that could be a space.
Oh, Roman, you hear that?
Roman, punter in the portal.
This is Big Ten football. But I heard he kind of wants to go to Australia, so
I mean there's nothing inherently wrong with Australia
It's home to like this world seven deadliest snakes and so I would and like biggest spiders, right?
Yeah, and big spiders too. I mean that's probably more in the outback, more so than Sydney.
I would guess people seem to like it there.
But yeah, I mean, well, let's look,
let's close with this important discussion, Zach.
How big of a loss is the punter really?
Because he could be busy this fall,
whoever the punter winds up being, right?
I mean, if he transferred from Iowa, probably big,
but I remember going to the UCLA LSU game and the big surprise for all you
LSU fans was how good the UCLA punter was so I
They had two punters at the time. I don't think it was Brody Richter, but it was you know, they were excited with the punter
I think Richter he's moving on I think we'll be fine
Excited about the punter. New Highest hole punting is winning mantra again
It's winning let's do it I about the punter. The Rick Newhysel punting is winning mantra again.

Someone tweeted Rory just punted on fourth and three
at midfield and the punt was blocked.
And I thought that was perfect.
That is indeed exactly what happened.
But hey, Tino Sincere could change things.
We don't know.
We'll just wait around and find out.
