Iowa holds on last night on the diamond as they get past Rutgers 4-3.
Moving on to the semifinal round of the Big Ten tournament.
They might be saying, how can that happen?
Because Iowa still has another game to play in pool play.
We'll explain that.
David Eicholt's gonna stop by.
He was in Indianapolis last weekend
in attendance for Caitlin Clark's debut of the two thousand twenty five regular season
we'll get his perspective on that the commitment of Emily Rodriguez from UCF and a whole lot
more with David Eicholtz but we begin today with the men's basketball program as Iowa
picks up a commitment from Ashton Williams. We've been talking a lot here recently on Lockdown Hawkeyes about just kind of this
holding pattern that we've been with the Iowa basketball program waiting to see what else
they're going to add to the roster.
So this becomes the 11th commitment of the squad.
When you look at the roster, the big glaring hole still remains at the center position,
a true center, a true five, unless your belief is that Trevon Yurok is somebody that's going
to be able to step forward and give them at least some minutes in your number one.
That's just not what you have.
Cam Manowah is a guy that certainly though undersized is going to be able to play that
position.
I think Fool Garris is a guy that will
be able to help out a little bit.
You look at some of his numbers, his rebounding metrics,
even at a low major level, what those could possibly
translate into.
But they're expensive.
They cost a ton of money in the transfer portal.
And even for, frankly, bad big guys,
they're still going to cost you an arm and a leg.
So over the last couple of weeks,
it's been down to two guys
two guys that we've talked about two guys that have visited Iowa and
When you go through
Ashton Williams makes his commitment. So he comes in from a season at Florida International
played grew up
Illinois Indiana bounce around a couple of schools there,
played a year, excuse me, a prep school before he went on to Florida International.
And the metrics are not pretty by any means. He is definitely a volume guy. And I think on the
wish list guy that we've talked about so much, Kiza Giffa, he was the
guy from High Point that I think I would have liked more.
I mean, he is more of a plug and play type of player, but the asking price, and it's
not just the asking price that I wonder about because I think that has been obviously a
big conversation part about this.
Kiza Giffa just made a visit to Seton Hall this week as he is still looking around
and we'll see if Seton Hall who I believe has one of the lowest NIL figures in the Big
East that they're going to be able to come up with the money. Dude's talented. Isaiah
Williams is more of a project, more of a guy that you're looking to build and because Iowa
didn't bring in a point guard in this recruiting class, we know that it's Bennett Sturtz for a year and then he's going to be moving on.
I think that they looked at it and wanted to have that developmental guy. Now, Cale
Combs is going to be that another one of the Drake transfers. He's going to be a guy still
in that developmental role at the point guard position. They're going to look to hit a big,
but with what's happening right now in recruiting and the open period, coaches were across the
country last week for Iowa.
As we saw McCollum was over in Council Bluffs and he was in Memphis.
I think some of the staff went up to Ohio for the Under Armour event up there.
So they've been scattered across the country.
Back to though, Ashley Williams, talking about him a little bit because now with this Kizagifah,
I don't think he's off the board.
But the asking price has to match what I would is.
So you bring in a guy that has some metrics that are a little shaky.
Average seven points, two and a half assists, two and a half rebounds, one and a half steals
per game.
Good defender.
Start right there.
A guy that can certainly defend.
Quick off the bounce. Again,
it's highlight tapes, but you see him and watching him, you can see definitely that quickness that is
there. I don't know if they have a shot doctor. Now, out of this staff, that's something that we're
still learning, right? Because in the past, we went and you look at Kirk Sparrow. He was the guy
that in the past regime, before he retired, he was the shot doctor. He was the guy that in the past regime before he retired, he was the shot doctor. He was the guy that's gonna go in there, clean things up, fix it up. But if
you can find that guy, at least the moldable clay that you have with Ashton
Williams, I think it's good. At minimum, this guy's gonna be a serviceable, big
ten backup by the time he's an upperclassman. Look, this year there's
just not gonna be a ton of minutes. There's not gonna be a lot of opportunities,
certainly at the point guard position for
anybody.
That's Cale Combs, that's Ashton Williams, whoever it is, because Bennett Sturtz is going
to play a ton of minutes again this season.
And if he's not playing a ton of minutes, we got problems.
This is a preseason All-American, preseason, depending on where you are, Braden Smith,
he's number one.
This is probably number two point guard in the Big Ten and Bennett Sturtz
You looked at the numbers last year now
You don't want him playing 39 minutes a game like you did at Drake last season
You'd like to get him a little rest
but I put it this way if we're gonna go minutes breakdown and I kind of go through and talk about a
standard Big Ten game a
game in the Big Ten that comes down to the wire what
it's going to look like what we're going to see out of this group of guys right
now well Bennett starts I put him down for 36 minutes maybe a couple minute
blow in the first half get him a minute breather in the second that's basically
it that's where you're looking for Bennett starts
well very full garris full garris I think also is a guy that's going to be out there a ton.
I think he's going to play a little bit of five when they go small. He's going to play
a ton at the power forward position. He's going to be out there 30 minutes. Brennan
Haassen going to come in 25 minutes a game. I think that's a realistic look at him and
that number could be even higher depending on what kind of defender that he is with the shooting ability that they need they need more offense on the floor
They need guys that can fill it up from the outside
I think that's a fair range to look at same kind of range about twice 25 minutes a game for Cooper catch
What I want to see in this new system for Cooper is he a more of three more of a four?
Depending on how this lineup shakes up.
Because if we believe that the lineup is gonna include
Bennett Sturtz, Fool Garris, Cam Manoit in the middle,
and Howson Starten, if it's Cooper Koch,
well then you're playing him at the three.
Is that sustainable?
Can he defend the three?
That's something that we gotta figure out.
After that, you get into
Isaiah Howard. I think there's a ton of upside of Isaiah Howard and I'm excited to see what he's
going to still develop into. You saw those moments, the athleticism, there's some shooting ability
that you can see in there. Wasn't consistent during his freshman campaign at Drake, but I think the
upside is immense for Isaiah Howard. Cale Combs mentioned him. You know, is he probably a 10 minute
type of game? Again, in that big, big 10 game? Same thing for Ashton Williams, maybe six
to eight minutes, something like that. A couple of minutes at the point guard, maybe a couple
of minutes at, at the tube, but that's going to be basically it for him. And then finally,
what is Trevin Yurok going to be in year number one? As I'm sure you've heard me and every
day as you definitely have, thanks for being at every dayer
and being with us every day.
Saw Trevin a lot, broadcast a lot of his games.
And because of that, you know,
kind of looking at him as a ball player
and looking at him going forward,
there's people that believe
that he's gonna help out this year.
Not 20 minutes a game, probably not even 15, but a couple of stretches each half.
Maybe it's because of foul trouble.
Maybe it's just because of inability to defend some bigger post players.
Trevin is not the fastest guy.
That's going to be an issue for him, but he's got the size.
He's got the body and that was 6 foot 11, and the physicality
that he can play with coupled with a very, very intriguing offensive skill set, I think
at times you can steal 8 minutes a game, even in a Big Ten game, for Trevon Urock. Not all
the time, not against every center and every combination that you're going to see in the
Big Ten, but I think there is going to be a role for him this season. If you're looking
ahead to him as a red shirt candidate, I don't think that happens right
now and certainly with the construction of this roster right now, I don't believe that's
going to happen. Thanks for being with us here today on Locked on Hawkeyes. We continue.
We're going to talk with David Eichold. He was in Indianapolis, part of Hawkeyeinsider.com.
He watched Caitlin Clark's debut. Just get his perspective on what he saw over there. Plus,
Iowa baseball. They move on to the semifinals yet they still
have another game in pool play. It's confusing. We'll explain.
This is Locked On Hawkeyes.
Well, the NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night
delivers highlight- worthy performances,
major momentum shifts and can't miss moments. How about tonight? Well, we saw in that comeback
from the Pacers, whether it's a game winning shot or a breakout player, there's never been
a better time to get in on the action. Fiat makes it easy to stay in the game before tip
off and live with player props, performance trends, and same game parlays. Fans have more
ways than ever to play smart and win big. I'm a Timber Wolves fan. I've been jumping aboard
with them. Didn't go very well in game one. Certainly in the second half of that game
is okay. CK roaring back, but I anticipate you're going to get a big bounce back performance
from Anthony Edwards. When he's called himself out in the post game press conference, you
can definitely do that. Maybe you just want to the postgame press conference. You can definitely do that.
Maybe you just want to see how he's doing. You can play live
prop bets as well on the FanDuel app. Absolutely love
that part about it and put together a same game parlay. New
to FanDuel, it's the perfect time to sign up. Head to
FanDuel.com and place your first $5 bet. If it wins,
you'll get $200 in bonus bets. Make every moment
more with Fiendool, official sports betting partner of the NBA.
A lot of ground to cover. I want to start with your weekend though, if you would allow
us, David. I want to go back to your time in Indiana.
I saw some of your tweets, saw some of your photos, etc. from Indianapolis. I guess I'm blown away. Game one and just the scene around the arena in advance of the game taking place.
It kind of really is an event, isn't it?
No, it really is.
I mean, Indianapolis is such a perfect setup though, too.
I think they do a really good job.
There's so many things to do just outside of it,
and it's all really close together
because if people have not been to Indianapolis,
Lucas Oriel Stadium where the Colts play
is about 0.4 miles away from Gainsburg Fieldhouse.
So again, it's all central located,
but the incredible part was this too.
You think about the Indiana Pacers are in the Eastern conference finals, right?
You go into their official team store, 80% of the stuff is fever and they put all the
Pacer stuff in the corner.
And I don't think that's a one day thing.
And it was really kind of incredible to see the movement there.
And then obviously I'm not sure you saw the Dave Portnoy kind of incredible to see the movement there. And then obviously,
I'm not sure you saw the Dave Portnoy tweet of the day of the game. I mean, guys, they were lined up
two hours before the store opened just to try to get some merch. It was a really fun event. And I've
told people that it's a big reason why I went. I kind of botched last year's Mother's Day and my
mom's birthday because we were so close together. So I was at one of my favorite watering holes
and I saw the tickets and I'm like, all right,
well I kind of owe her.
So I ended up being a really, really good trip,
but no man, you're exactly right.
It's a total event there.
The atmosphere is awesome.
It was great weather and there's really very few bad seats
in that arena too and I think that makes it even better
because that's not the case with some NBA arenas.
Yeah, that's what I continually heard.
And when the big 10 tournaments there, as it is often is,
is people just talk about the aesthetic of actual basketball.
There's not a basketball arena better built than what they did there at game
bridge and how good it was. So what does make it different? I mean,
you've obviously been in a ton of basketball buildings now throughout the years.
What does make that building so good for hoops?
I mean, I think it's the, it's almost like, like you say, it's almost like a theater, right? I mean,
again, there's such good seats. And I think the way the arena just allows everybody to be engaged,
right? Because you think about even as simple as getting to your seat, walking around the arena,
it doesn't take you an hour to get around it, Like just the whole aesthetic of it all. And I also think just the stardom
power. I mean, you think about what Tyrese Albert is done with the Pacers and the exciting
brand of basketball that they play. And then of course, Caitlin Clark with the fever. I
just think the aesthetic, the history, and quite honestly, just the state of Indiana
as a whole, because I mean, we've talked about this too. I equate Indiana high school basketball to Texas high school football. Like that is the
event at Indiana for people just of all ages. So it was just a really fun event. I think
that they do a tremendous job, the stardom and just the aesthetic in general. I mean,
even if something as simple as the PA announcers and the way they kind of engage with the fans, like it was very strange for me because I cannot tell you the last time I've
been to a game as a fan. So I kind of lost what it's like because you know, if you go cover games,
you're announcing you're so locked into work. And this is the first time where I could really kind
of take it all in and kind of embrace it and kind of understand what it's like to be a fan again,
just because it's been so long.
I mean, it's probably been pre-COVID, guys, since I've really been to a game as a fan.
You know, one of the things I appreciate, and we'll get to the Hawks in just a second,
is the appreciation.
Sure, Caitlin Clark, she's going to get the loudest round of applause when she's introduced,
etc.
But it's more than that.
I mean, seemingly, the fan base loves Kelsey Mitchell and Alea
Boston and and Alexi Hall and the recognition. It's obviously a very in tune fan base when
DeWan or Bonner was about to take her place. It's what third in the all time scoring. So
it seems to me from just watching on TV that it's just more than Caitlin Clark. Sure, she's
the ringleader, but the fan base
appreciates the team as well. I mean, it's very similar culture to like Iowa women's basketball,
right? And it's kind of what we've said all along. The name gets the attention, the personnel keeps
you around, right? You're going to draw eyes. I mean, that's what the WNBA is kind of hoping
for, right? You get Caitlin Clark to kind of watch people watch the league. And then whenever she's
done or she's gone, the new stars that were around her are going to
be embraced. I mean, look at Kate Martin's popularity, right? I mean, look what she's
looking, Gabby Marshall, she walked back into Carver Hawkeye arena for Caitlin's exhibition
game.
There was no announcement. They were giving her a standing ovation once they saw her get
to her seat. Like it's, it's very similar, I think to the Indiana fever.
And I think it was really cool what the fever did to now again, I don't know if it's like
this everywhere. You know how they always do the starting lineups guys. They announced
every member of the coaching staff, they announced every single reserve before the game and they
were running out one by one out of the tunnel and giving everybody their moment.
I think that was kind of the big, Oh my gosh thing for, you know, Sophie Cunningham. She didn't play. She still got run out of
the tunnel. Do you want a boner? You could see just her face light up. And I think for
her, you think about all the great things she's accomplished. One of the best players
in WNBA history. I think it was kind of her, I'm finally being appreciated. And I think,
you know, obviously Caitlin Clark's drawing the eyes.
So now I think a lot more people get to learn about Duana Bonner and she even said it post game.
She said, now I'm not saying I deserve it,
but it's really, really nice to kind of see the work
that I've put in be appreciated.
So it's just a very unique set of circumstances, I think.
And again, I really don't know when we'll ever see this
again and honestly, we might not ever see it again.
To hear now on the women's basketball program and maybe a head
scratching news tonight.
Davis former player was there as an assistant coach, though down director of
player personnel and player development.
And that means not a full-time staff member in terms of the pay that the
regular assistants get.
Can you lead us down why the decision?
Because as far as I know, she has not been announced as a head or as an assistant coach
anywhere.
Why Davis is leaving?
Yeah, I think that's one of the more head scratching things throughout the off season.
I mean, honestly, I thought when Raina Harmon was going to Florida Gulf Coast, I thought
Tenaya Davis was going to follow her.
But again, she's still relatively young in the coaching circles.
But it's interesting too, because Raina Harmon ended up hiring former Iowa women's basketball manager, Will McIntyre.
And I believe he's only 25 years old and he's going to go be in a system under Harmon.
But you know, I think for tonight, she's kind of been around a little bit and gotten some
coaching experience elsewhere.
I just think it's a part of the grind.
I mean, she could stay in Iowa, continue to do what she's doing, but you look at the staff
right now, I don't know when she'd be able to be elevated. I mean, maybe she kind of is taking a chance on herself and, and deciding to go
with separate ways to try to get an assistant coaching role at D1 somewhere at this point in
her career. Maybe she feels like she's ready to kind of take on that responsibility because as,
as great as it was to have her here, and as much as I know, she loved being in Iowa,
I do think that she's kind of looking to take that next step. And I think when you kind of look at the continuity within the Iowa women's
basketball coaching staff and.
I mean, what's the upside for her, right?
I mean, she's obviously going to have a stable job, but we know how this coaching
business is, and I've kind of said it for the last couple of years, I'm very
surprised Iowa held onto Raina Harmon as long as they did, and you know, she's
probably been approached a handful of times.
Um, and then you look at Jan Jensen. I mean, how many programs would be able to hold on to a Jan
Jensen for 20 plus years and then take over that job, right? And we know for a fact that she was
offered numerous Power 4 gigs and she ended up just kind of waiting out at Iowa is now is getting
her chance. So I think for Tanaya, I do think it's just strictly a career move. I don't think that
there's any, you know, ill will or I hate to use the Taylor Swift song, bad blood.
Well, that's your style.
I can't do it, man. I know it's gross. I debated on saying that, but yeah, just to kind of
wrap it up, I do think that it was no bad blood. I think she's looking to take that
next step, man. And honestly, I can't blame her because we know this coaching thing. It's a, it can be a
really, really brutal grind. Uh, Jen Jensen seemingly doing pretty well in the recording
portal. Uh, Rodriguez comes from UCF and I know Chad Lysakow just posted a piece of, uh, Leila Hay.
She's six foot five, tallest Hawkeye in 12 plus years. I guess it would have thought that that
wouldn't be the case.
What, what do you know about her?
She's really good, man.
I mean, I think she's a big, just physical post.
She can block shots.
She runs the floor very well.
I do think that her mid range is going to need to be added.
I think she'll need to add a couple more post moves, but if it wasn't
glaringly obvious in the two national title losses, Iowa need more size.
Man, I mean, you look at specifically Caitlin Clark senior year as great as she was.
Remember, she had, I think 18 points the end of the first quarter, but Iowa was just kind
of, they were out size and there was in it with no offense to Hannah Stolke, who gave
everything she had.
She's still an undersized five, right?
I mean, six foot two going up against numerous six foot six, six foot seven girls. It's really, really tough unless you're going to shoot the ball 60% from three
and then you keep them off the glass or at least limit opportunities. So yeah, Laila
Hayes, I think I do think she'll need a little bit of development, but I also think you look
at, you know, Hannah Stolke, you have Ava Hyen, who I think could be the breakout player
in the big 10 this year, you know, not really a hot take there, right? But I do love the, the, the potential of a, you know, high, low combination with Hayes and
Ava high. And you just look at the size, like Ava high and has a really nice jump shot.
Layla Hayes can run the floor well and she's very competent. I do think that there'll be
a little bit of an adjustment because I mean, keep in mind they're getting her straight
out of Alaska. And with all the respect to, you know, any Alaskan friends of mine or people listening,
I don't think that's necessarily a women's basketball high school powerhouse.
And it turns out do you want talent at a frequent basis?
So I do think there'll be a little bit of an adjustment for her just from the
talent gap, but the pieces are there.
And if you're going to trust one coach in America to develop posts,
Jane Jensen is going to be near the top of that list without a doubt.
So is it fair to say over on the men's side that they're done?
There's the kid from high point. He visited, nothing happened.
Talk to him. Maybe he's asked him for more money than I was willing.
There was the Belgian big guy thought he was going to Virginia.
That still hasn't happened. Should we just anticipate that?
I'll tell you what, the guy who's going to Virginia, man,
I don't know if you've heard this, but I'm, I don't know if he's gonna be eligible play.
Oh boy.
PWA rules.
Interesting.
So there's something there. And also the high point guard too. I do think I put this on my
message board. It's very, it's a very interesting situation because I was told by two sources,
like near the end of his visit, that he was flat out committing to Iowa. And like you said,
I do think that he just tried to kept running up the price.
And we've seen a handful of times this off season where Ben McCollum, where,
you know,
he feels like he's just being used as a leverage tool.
Ben McCollum is not afraid to say, all right, bye. They're not,
he's not going to go back and forth on it.
And he trusts himself and his staff to go develop talent and get talent. Uh,
and again, if the high point guard wants to go out there and get some money, I'm not, you know, all, all free
will to him to go out and do that. But I think Ben McCollum is also thinking longterm where
he's going to want to spend the money with that feels like it's going to be best for
him. And at this point, he doesn't feel like he needs a big guy. He'd like another point
guard. I think that they're going to continue monitoring a couple of different pieces, but
I think it's been abundantly clear, man, they're not going to overpay for somebody.
They're not going to pay $2 million for a guy that averages nine points and eight rebounds.
And again, that's what the market dictates, but I'm right there with Ben McCollum.
I think it's frankly ridiculous to even think about doing that.
David Eicholt, HawkeyeInsider.com.
He joins us and we appreciate it every time you do.
Thank you, David.
We'll talk to you down the road. Have
a great all day weekend. Hey, thanks guys. I appreciate you.
Take care. Yeah. That's David Eichold joining us from Hawkeye
Insider dot com. Part of 24 seven sports. Big thank you to
David Eichold. Iowa punches their ticket to the
semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. A big difficult
hurdle awaits them there. Yet before that
semifinal, you gotta play another game. We'll explain next. This is Locked On Hawkeyes.
Back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with

button if you're watching us on YouTube. If you're listening on
the podcast side, five star reviews helps us get in front of
more Hawkeye fans and a shout out to every dayers with us each
and every day. We continue and time to take a look at Iowa
Baseball. With the win last night against Rutgers, four to
three, they hold on. Couple of worm burners late in the ball
game in the ninth inning as uh we're slipping back and forth
between that the NBA playoff game boy what a night of sports
it was. Iowa holds on though moves on to the semifinals yet
now they have a game that is scheduled for Thursday
tonight as most of you are watching, against Indiana.
That means nothing, because Iowa still is not a team
that is gonna get in a large bid.
Even if they make a run all the way to the championship,
win this game against Indiana, beat UCLA,
who they will play in the semi-finals,
even if that happens, there just isn't enough there. After the
win last night, they're up to number 71 in the RPI. A win against Indiana would
maybe jump them up a couple of spots. Even a win against UCLA would probably
jump them up maybe, excuse me, to the mid-60s. It's just not gonna be there. 71
RPI. That would be Iowa's win against UCLA, their first quad one victory of the season.
It's not there in their resume. So this is what Iowa needs to do. And by the way, I got
to give a shout out to Cade Overmuller. Boy, what a performance out of Cade. He's going
to be in contention for Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, just an outstanding season. He bet
on himself, came back for another year and the see the ascension that he has made and that is gonna be something that's
gonna be pretty profitable for him coming up in the amateur MLB draft
coming up here in a month. But back to Iowa, just wanted to drop that in there.
So you have this game against Indiana, even if you lose 25-0, it doesn't matter.
Don't use any arms of consequence.
Don't use any guys that you anticipate you're going to need.
And that means bullpen arms 1-8.
Because over those next two games, in the semifinals against UCLA,
and if you do advance to the championship game it's all hands on deck.
If they get to Sunday and that championship game can there be Oben Mueller give you a couple
innings? Maybe. He's not going to be able to give you a full start but there's a possibility
that you can go that direction and then he piece it together from there. Still with what you have
now holding on you're not going to use anybody
of importance in there. And also any guys that are banked up on the offensive side,
any of your positional players, give them a rest too. Again, this game, it doesn't matter.
When we talked about the structure of the Big Ten tournament and going to this,
this is one of the things that was one of the concerns that you have a very real possibility.
Same thing's happening. I will play the nightcap at nine o'clock, but
the morning game with UCLA, who's also punched their ticket already, they'll be playing a
medium meaningless game against UCLA in the morning. And that's something I'm going to
be keeping an eye on exactly what they're doing, what their lineup and their pitchers
of who they're going to be using in this one. So just something to keep an
eye on, something that's interesting. And if Iowa gets blown out on Thursday night, and I think that
they will, don't freak out about it. It doesn't matter. I was already in the semifinals and they
got to be ready to go because that UCLA team, as we found out with Oregon and Oregon State, even
Washington, boy, those teams are really, really talented. And I was going to have to play their
A game in order to get to the championship.
