What a night.
We're going live here late into the evening,
into the early morning hours as we are locked on Hawkeyes.
I'm Trent Condon.
The breaking news, Kirk Ferentz has been suspended
for the first game of the season.
We'll talk about that along with the wide receiver coach,
John Budmeier, also receiving a one-game suspension
on the recruitment of Cade McNamara.
Today, locked on Hawkeyes.
on the recruitment of Cade McNamara.

Well, this is a wild one.
The suspension announced today by Scott Dockerman of The Athletic.
He had the breaking news.
The rumblings and the rumors were happening Wednesday evening, and it became official with somebody on the Hawkeye beat a Scott Dockerman.
Had it first.
Kirk Ferentz along with John Budmeier are suspended for game one of the 2024 season,
the home opener against Illinois State, and it will be without those two on the sideline.
Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by GameTime.

All right, let's get into it. The nuts and bolts of things as we talk about it.
You can join us here on the live feed in the comments section there.
We'll get to your thoughts here a little bit later on in the program.
But the nuts and bolts start with the suspension.
This is handed down.
Now, initially when these rumors and rumblings were happening in the evening
and when I first caught wind of it and started to make some contacts with things,
there was talk of tampering.
There was talk of this possibly maybe being connected to Caden Proctor.
Very quickly had one person say that that was not the case. It was nothing to do with that.
This is about the recruitment of Caden McNamara. And as we remember back two years ago when he
made his commitment to Iowa, it all came together very quickly. He was having knee surgery after
he shot it down at Michigan, entered the transfer portal,
and within a couple of days, he became an Iowa Hawkeye. And it was crazy because same kind of
thing, those rumblings and rumors started to happen and everything came together so quickly.
It was just, you had that feeling that this had to be something that was in the works for a while.
We know about the connection with John Budmeier, who recruited him out of high
school, Cade McNamara. That connection makes a whole lot of sense. So this isn't a surprise.
The frustrating element from the Iowa perspective is this happens everywhere. Nick Saban talked
about very openly going after a quarterback from Toledo. He went out and said that.
Has Alabama had anything? No, of course not. That Iowa has this happen.
Now, what we don't know also from the reporting of Scott Dockerman is, is this a sanction
that was handed down by the NCAA?
Was the violation determined by them?
Or was this self-reporting and self-applying this by the athletic department with Beth
Getz and making that decision?
So that's the part of this that we don't know at this moment in time.
1.30 on Thursday afternoons, that's when we will get the press conference from Kurt Ferenc.
And this is another interesting angle is I get the press release this afternoon,
a little before three o'clock and just kind of ho-hum.
All right.
Maybe they're going to be announcing that Cade McNamara is officially going to be the
starter for game number one with practice wrapping up.
They're going to do that and then make a normal game week starting next week on Monday and go
through the normal flow of things. I anticipated that's what it was going to be. That's all it was.
But then as soon as these rumblings started to happen, that kind of jumped back into my mind.
So we'll get more information obviously before that. We'll continue to work
here on Lockdown Hawkeyes and try to find if we can get anything else. If you're looking for that
press conference tomorrow, we will have it on the Iowa Sports Radio Network at 1.30. My show,
Miller & Condon, along with Ken Miller, we will take that live right at 1.30 when the press
conference begins. So if you're looking at that, you can find us on 106.3 KXNO in Des Moines,
also 620 AM out of Sioux City, 800 KXIC in Iowa City, 95.7 in Cedar Rapids,
the new FM Sports Talk station in Cedar Rapids, along with 1260 over in the Quad City.
So we got you covered there across the state of Iowa,
and you can also listen anywhere that you are on the iHeart
Radio app. Again, 1.30 on Thursday afternoon is when the Kirk Ferentz Press Conference will be
happening and we'll have it for you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network. All right, let's get more
into the details. Again, many of these from Scott Dockerman, along with a few things that I'd heard.
A lot of frustration and a component to this that I think is a little bit exciting.
A lot of frustration and a component to this that I think is a little bit exciting.
And I had some Cyclone friends reach out on Wednesday night after the news was coming out,
asking about it, and they were disappointed because, well, I think you're going to see a pretty fired up team.
Look, there's one thing about Kirk Ferentz is when the going gets tough, his teams, his program,
that's usually when they're at their best.
Back against the wall, nobody believes in us.
Those kind of things, those galvanizing forces are incredibly powerful inside of Iowa football under Kirk Ferentz. And this is going to be an element that I believe that they're going to be able to use and use it to their advantage this season.
Everybody's against us.
Everybody's out against us now. And we're going to have to deal with this and go, excuse their advantage this season. Everybody's against us. Everybody's out against us now.
And we're going to have to deal with this and go, excuse me, another direction.
Go live here.
Need to get a little drink as we're going through things late here in the evening.
Again, hit us up with your comments, your thoughts,
and we will get to those here momentarily as we get a swig,
need a little caffeine going for us here early on Thursday morning.
All right, so we continue the conversation, the reporting from Scott Dockerman.
Let's go into the article a little bit deeper if you haven't seen it.
First up on this from Scott Dockerman of The Athletic,
as I pull it back up here on the phone.
Sorry, live, I'm not exactly doing my best work here as we get going.
All right, let's get back into it.
Here we go. Sorry, live, I'm not exactly doing my best work here as we get going. All right, let's get back into it.
Here we go.
This is a violation when courting came back to America before the transfer portal opened in 2022.
A source briefed on the violation said the suspension is related to an NCAA investigation, but it wasn't immediately clear whether the sanction was imposed by Iowa or the NCAA.
Now, this is just a theory.
This is no reporting here.
Don't take this and run.
But it's a theory that I have.
And if you're an everyday listener to Lockdown Hawkeyes,
you know that I have theories.
Sometimes they're a little crazy.
Sometimes they're a little out there.
And many times, they're pretty close.
This one.
We know that Iowa self-reported the minor violation in the email, the text that was sent to Caden Proctor.
Now, that recruitment and the way that went, that's a conversation for another day.
But because of that, an investigation opened up.
And it leads me to speculate.
And that's all this is, is speculation that an investigation began at that point.
They started digging a little bit deeper.
And this is what came out and what they
found. Hey, you know what? Let's go back and look at some of the other recruiting things that happen
and maybe some oddities in the recruiting calendar and very well could have come to this. Again,
just a theory, but I think a thought that makes a whole lot of sense as the NCAA started to dig
a little bit deeper. Another component, another theory, let's put the tinfoil hat on once again. Let's go this direction with it. And let's take a look at this angle. So Michigan, they have a lot
going on. Maybe trying to get a little heat off themselves. You know what? As they have their
notice of allegations, if we can take a little heat off of us, hey, we're not alone. We're not
the only things not doing things right. We had a quarterback here and our Big Ten brethren came in and swooped him up.
And we know J.J. McCarthy was going to be the quarterback. J.J. was going to be the guy
going forward and obviously what he did for them a season ago. I don't think it's a huge stretch,
though. It could have been Michigan trying to tell on one of their own and maybe try to
help themselves a little bit and lower the sanctions that are going to be levied on that dirty program.
Again, just a theory, but I think a thought that makes a whole lot of sense.
A lot of different angles to go.
John Budmeier, a guy that struggled in his role as a special assistant, helping work with the quarterbacks.
Now, you can argue that he just didn't have the requisite talent to make it happen a season ago, and certainly after the McNamara injury, both on kids day and how limited he was with that quad injury.
And then the ACL, and we saw what happened with Deacon Hill at the quarterback position.
And to many's surprise, yet frustration, John Budmeier then was elevated to wide receiver coach, something that is still one of those head-scratching areas. Is there something more to that, knowing that this possibly could be happening,
and throwing Bud Meyer a little bit of a bone and keeping on staff of the wide receiver?
Again, theories, we're talking through them.
We're going to talk through it here as we continue Locked on Hawkeyes.
We're going to get your thoughts and theories.
Hit us up with the comments, and we will get to those as we continue.
This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Trent Conant back with you once again here.
Live edition of Lockdown Hawkeyes as we come to you with the breaking news
that Kirk Ferentz has been suspended for game one against Illinois State.
All right.
Again, late at night.
Took the contacts out, so we've got to put the glasses on
so we can read through some of your contents
and your comments that you have here on Lockdown Hawkeyes.
All right, let's look through here and what we got.
This comes from Lama Power Hawkeye.
There's a great name for you.
Trent, any chance this is why Coach Bud got the promotions with no experience?
He told KF he'd be the fall guy.
Maybe Coach Bud double-crossed KF.
And then a couple laughing emojis.
Again, we love the crazy theories, right?
One-game suspension.
Lockdown Nittany Lions with the question there.
One game suspension.
So it will be just the matchup against Illinois State where Kirk won't get there.
Taptan, great point here.
Seth Wallace.
Remember, this summer we saw that Seth Wallace was elevated, got the promotion, if you will,
and the job title that went along with it as assistant head coach.
And at the time, well, if there was an acting head coach, if it ever came to fruition,
we thought we wouldn't be certainly at this element.
That's a surprising component.
I mean, this is Kirk Ferentz.
And there's detractors out there.
I get it.
There's elements of Kirk Ferentz that do frustrate me as both a fan and as a commentator like I am.
There are plenty of things that I get upset about.
But Kirk Ferentz is a good man.
Kirk Ferentz is a good person.
Does he love his family a little too much?
Does he give them roles maybe they don't deserve?
Most importantly, his oldest, yes, that's a conversation.
But as a person, he is a good man.
And in this dirty environment, working in this just absolutely ridiculous sport that is college football,
to see him having to go through
this and have this come down, it's going to be a stain. For some people, they're going to use it
as more ammunition. Now, it hasn't been all sunshine and flowers for the Kirk Ferentz era,
and we know that. And there's plenty of things that you can look at and point at that weren't
done correctly. However, this is one that I think leaves you scratching your head.
Let's go here to Just Too Smooth.
Trent, it's 2.30 in Georgia.
I hope this ain't clickbait.
No, no clickbait here.
It is happening.
Kirk Ferentz is suspended for the first game of the season.
More from Lama.
Sad day at Iowa.
Wallace gets to be the head coach, a coach who bullies a player
and ridicules him for alerting disability in his mental health
and gets to be a head coach.
Hopefully, Beth vetoes this. Let Woods do it. A lot of people were in your camp
with that one, Lama, and a lot of people disappointed, certainly, with the actions.
When the racial allegations were handed down and some of the things that we heard, it was not just
some things that came down from one coach, one strength and conditioning coach in Coach Doyle.
That's not what it was. It went much deeper than that. Copper Stacker. Copper, yeah, not Cooper. Copper Stacker.
Caden Proctor is a piece of garbage. There's a lot of people that would agree with that statement.
Bradley Gibson checking in. Lester should be head coach first week to do a new offense,
in my opinion. Now, Bradley, it's not a bad idea. Obviously, he has the acumen.
He's done it, did it at a high level at Western Michigan,
had a lot of great years at Western Michigan in the MAAC.
And you know what?
That's not a bad idea.
Now, we know that that's not going to happen,
at least I believe, with the elevation of Seth Wallace.
But maybe, Bradley, you're onto something.
I kind of like that idea and the way you're thinking.
Big Hawkeye Kelvin. When did Scott report this? I want to say it was probably about 1030, something like that.
I found out from X account, South Bend Hawk was first. Well, Kelvin, when your name is South Bend
Hawk, that's not exactly reporting. Look, I put a tweet out there before a doc came out with the
official announcement, just saying that there are major rumors out there and announced the press conference was coming up at 1.30.
Reporting in a role like Scott Dockerman has, like Tom Caker, David Eichold, the people on the Hawkeye Beat, John Boenkamp, Chad Leistekow, those kind of people, reporting that is different than some guy on Twitter saying what he read on a message board.
Or even if you heard the information, got the information, that's not breaking news.
It just isn't.
If his name was actually out there, that's different.
But when you go there, not exactly that.
More from Copper Stacker, Michigan stinks.
They should be suspended from the Big Ten.
Look, I'm not going to go there.
But yeah, there's a lot to be shady about.
You know, one thing about Michigan that still drives me crazy is what happened at the end of
2020 when they ducked out of that game. And I truly believe if they would have played their
final two games that season, Jim Harbaugh wouldn't have been around for the Big Ten Championship,
the Big Ten Championships, the National Championship. The way that Iowa was playing at the end of that season,
they would have demolished that Michigan team.
They would have put them up.
I mean, they would have put a 40-burger up on Michigan,
blow them out, and then Ohio State a week later
would have made it even look uglier.
Instead, they ducked out.
More from Kelvin.
Didn't Bud lose two in-house wide receivers,
one to ISU, one to Fresno?
Yes, one to Texas A&M.
If it's true Sullivan recruited Gil to Iowa, that'd mean he hasn't done anything since the raise in promotion.
I'm not going to get any arguments from there from me, Calvin. Tack it again, checking in
and your comments on a live edition of Lockdown Hawkeyes. I wonder if the offense will operate
differently with Kirk suspended. Lester, let it rip. I like your guys' thoughts here. You know, this is another
one of those ideas that hadn't exactly gone, but the heavy hand of Kirk Behrens. We've seen that
in all three of his offensive coordinators. And in a way, Ken O'Keefe, you look at what he did
before he got to Iowa. Ken O'Keefe was a guy that was known kind of more of a high-flying offensive
coach, a guy that would let it rip, would do a whole lot more. You think of the early version of Iowa when Kirk got there.
Now they did it because of necessity, because the offensive line was so small,
was just so undermanned at that time that they had to play in a different style.
You remember Scott Mullen chucking around, throwing for 350 yards in a game.
You had that kind of component.
It's the way that they had to operate and play.
Well, that was negated
throughout the years. Again, 2004 was another year because of necessity that they had to play a
different style, but even then they still ran the football. You're seeing a little bit more of the
conservative nature. And I think that goes for a lot of us. As you get older, you become more
conservative and certainly the case there, but without Kirk on the sideline, maybe you're onto
something. Don't mind that. Jay's checking in in here he's got a comment for us on lockdown
Hawkeyes my first thought that would Lester be the coach but maybe too much on his plate
being his first game that's another good component as you talk about Tim Lester
taking over and maybe being the acting head coach for the first game of the season and that's another
thing that they can operate very quickly yes Seth Wallace is the assistant head coach and
maybe Kirk Ferentz's hope for coaching waiting.
However, we have a guy with coaching experience, head coaching experience.
That's one thing about this staff.
There just isn't much of it.
You look up and down the roster,
and there's just not many guys that have been in that,
and it's a different position being there.
More from Kelvin.
Eli Green was a wide receiver, couldn't get an ISU,
got him, he had to get out of North Dakota State.
That was one that would have helped out in that Iowa State team. Man, they got depth, a wide receiver, couldn't get an ISU, got him, he had to get out of North Dakota State. That was one that would have helped out in that Iowa State team.
Man, they got depth, a wide receiver,
but like a couple of those guys wearing the black and gold.
Woods and Lester split head coach, Phil Rudd in the defense,
that gets me giddy at 144 in the morning.
I'm with you, Kelvin.
It is a time to think a little bit differently.
Look, my thoughts on this, and I mentioned the frustrations, right?
The frustrations that you have as an Iowa fan. You have to deal maybe with the guy
in the office down. He's a Cyclone fan, or maybe you got a Gopher fan or a Husker fan or whatever
it is. And yes, there is the annoyance. And it really is because this is something that is
happening across the country. This is something that is happening everywhere. I mentioned Alabama
and Nick Saban talking outwardly about trying to recruit a guy that
was never in the portal, the Toledo cornerback.
We have these kinds of things that are happening everywhere.
Yet little old Iowa is the one that has this handed down.
Again, we don't know if this is handed down from the NCAA.
We do know from reporting a Scott Dockerman that an investigation was happening with the NCAA. We do know from reporting of Scott Dockerman that an investigation was happening with the NCAA,
but that's a component that definitely leaves you a little bit frustrated and overall. We got a
little more football talk here for you. Not all, just on the suspension here. Want to get a little
bit more into some of the more rumblings and happenings that's been happening. Of course,
Saturday, the last big scrimmage that they had closed to the media. There are a few things that came out of that. This Iowa defense looks to be outstanding once again,
and a couple other components to this team that are going to be more important. Plus,
we'll take some more of your comments if you want to chime in here. If you are up late with me,
look, I'm a night owl, but this one's getting a little bit ridiculous here tonight. We're going
to stay up with you talking Iowa football. This is Lockdown Hawkeyes. Hey, while you're there, hit that subscribe button. Helps us get in front of more Hawkeye fans. If

We continue Lockdown Hawkeyes as we take a look at what is happening with this program
and what we are hearing as the camp starts to break when we get ready for the 2024 season.

Thanks for the platform.
Absolutely.
I'm right there with you.
Copperstacker again.
I was at the Scott Mullen Pass Attempt record game.
I was there as well in the student section.
And I remember, not real well.
Uh, Tackett again.
Isn't it amazing how quickly they dealt this punishment,
but the NCAA continues to drag its feet with Michigan cheating.
Well, that has maybe something to do also with Beth Goetz.
Maybe has something to do with the Iowa program and the way they operate.
Having somebody that is actually truthful, like Kirk Ferentz, unlike the former coach at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh, that probably has a lot
to do with it as well. Mention camp breaking, and there has been some breakout starts. You know,
one of the guys that we have talked about throughout the spring and summer months has
been on that defensive line. Iowa looking for that pass rush and getting Deontay Craig back
healthy this year. I think he's going to have a big season, but they still need more coming off on that defensive line. Iowa looking for that pass rush and getting Deontay Craig back healthy
this year. I think he's going to have a big season, but they still need more coming off the edge
this season. Brian Allen's a guy that we've seen pop, and it sounds like the one thing that they've
been looking for, the consistency, the ability to do it, snap in, snap out, being able to do it
every single time. It's getting there. It's not complete, but he is showing the maturity,
showing the growth that at minimum,
he is going to be a guy that's going to be able to get some snaps this year.
He's going to be able to help out.
I think we've all heard about Reese Van Der Zee
and the camp that he has put together.
It's going to be incredibly difficult with that wide receiver group,
I think, to keep him off the field this year.
Now, is it going to be for just four games this season,
or is it going to be a full compliment? And he will not redshirt this year. Remember the rules that changed a
couple of years back. You can still play up to four games in a season and still be able to
maintain your redshirt status. So you have that component as well. Those are a couple of names
that have popped a little bit. Another one that needs to be mentioned in the defense and backfield.
And talked about this the last couple of days.
I just want to see a healthy season out of Xavier Wampa.
Seeing Xavier at the high school level, calling a bunch of his games at Southeast Polk.
Yes, he was a five-star and for a reason.
His ability to close on a ball carrier, to close with a ball in the air,
is unlike anything that I've seen before.
And unfortunately, because of injury a season ago,
we didn't get to see the
complete Xavier Wampa. If there was a game coming up this weekend, he'd be able to play. He was
looking like he's going to be on the practice field for their final practice Wednesday, Thursday,
before they get ready for the start of the season. But getting him a healthy season,
the good news about that though, is safety. That's another position where you're worried
about death. Cohen Engtjener is going to be a stud, but he's coming off a pretty major surgery. And because
of that, we'll see what, how close to a hundred percent he's going to be, not just at the beginning
of the year, but throughout the course of this season. But Zach Luttmer has been able to get a
ton of reps alongside Quinn Schulte. That is huge. Developing that depth. The cornerback position
is incredibly deep.
Jon Nestor was listed at the starter in the first depth chart that was released at Big Ten Football Media Days.
We've seen T.J. Hall, Deshaun Lee, both those guys that have played well.
If I had to take a guess right now, I think T.J. Hall would be the guy.
Remember, he was the guy that went out there,
got the first team reps to begin the open practice at Kids Day here
what a week and a half back now. He was the first guy out there. Tweaked practice at kids day here. What a week and a half
back now. He was the first guy out there. Tweaked his ankle a little bit. He's good to go. No huge
concerns on that front, but it is a three headed race for that starting quarterback spot opposite
Jamari Harris. All three of those guys have shown the ability to go really well. Another one we
continue to hear about Reese Dakin and what Reese has been able to do at the punter position.
Reese is a guy, comes in from Australia, taking over for Torrey Taylor.
I still want to see it, though, in the competitive environment.
It's just different punting in front of 70,000 fans, punting with a real rush coming your way and trying to get those punts off.
There's no doubting the leg strength that he has and no doubting what he can do physically,
but the other components to it and what we're going to see out of him coming up this season. So those are just a couple of the names
that have been jumping out a little bit deeper down the depth chart. Scott Dockerman, who joins
us here from time to time, both on the radio show and played it here on the podcast. He mentioned
really likes Kamari Moulton, what he continues to see from him. I think we're going to get a big season out of Caleb Johnson. That's a size, skill, development that he has put together. He's
unlike any other Iowa running back that they have. I heard some good things about that.
It's an exciting season. And finally, the quarterback spot. Yes, the quarterback position,
again, Cade McNamara is going to be the dude. I don't think there's any doubt about it.
There's just too much invested in Cade McNamara financially and just inside the program. He is going to be the guy. Now,
if he struggles, we know that there is somebody that has played in the Big Ten, has put together
a good game, albeit against Maryland, but still put up a good game with Brendan Sullivan. So you
have that component, just having depth at the quarterback position and somebody that's actually pushing Cade McNamara
is going to be a good thing.
