Hawkeye athletics. We're gonna talk a little bit later on about
those first place Iowa baseball team. Unbelievable as
they get the sweep over the
weekend and it must move things up a little bit against Minnesota, but they get the sweep
against the Gophers goes the other way for the softball team. We'll talk about that a
little bit later on. We got a lot of portal conversation. Plus we're going to be talking
with Scott Dockerman from the athletic. We're going to get his thoughts on the hiring of
Ben McCollum, the newest Iowa men's basketball coach, where he lands after being at the press conference a week ago, where Iowa goes
from here on that front. And of course, we'll talk some football with Scott Dockerman as well as
spring practice is underway and some intriguing position battles for the Iowa football team.
But we begin today with the transfer portal. Yes, each and every year this thing gets more and more crazy and more and more important. holdovers, and there's guys that will transfer for the most part.
You got a pretty good baseline. You look at the Iowa roster. It's Bennett Sturtz. Great.
It's now Cooper Koch, and we'll get to his return here momentarily. And then there's a whole lot of question marks.
That's what it is. We have to remain patient.
It's going to be difficult and there might be a time or two that I overreact.
I freak out a little bit.
I think that's where all of us go.
The ups and downs though of the transfer portal, the rumors, the innuendo.
So if you are somebody that for the last 25, 27 years for me, I've been on message boards,
you know that the recruiting world can be a little bit wild, a little weird. There's
rumors, there's things that happen, but remember, this is happening usually over the course
of a year, a couple of years, building up to eventually when these student athletes
make their commitments to particularly schools. We're microwaving this here in the transfer portal era. We're putting this all together
and we're making these things happen over days, weeks. It is an incredibly short period
of time. And because of that, the wild swings, the wild ebbs and flows that you get as it
pertains to the portal, just absolutely crazy the way things set up. Let's get to Kuprakach and his return. So obviously a freshman campaign that didn't go the way I think anybody thought it was going to.
And you look back at what he was able to do before the injury shut him down for the year.
And I know there's a lot of innuendo, a lot of chatter about what the injury was
So be it right no big deal
He's coming back and he's gonna be ready to go. So this is step number two now a bed McCollum
Cooper catch had offers Cooper catch had opportunities. I remember coming out of high school
This is a guy that had offers from some big time programs. This is a guy that had Purdue and
Michigan State after him. And it's not very often in basketball that Iowa wins those recruiting
battles against those kinds of programs. But they did. Now the bloodlines help right and JR his dad playing in the 90s NBA draft pick guy that wore the black
and gold and certainly a family that you could tell are invested getting him back though is a
good thing and now what you're looking for is health you go back a couple of times where he
was able to put up some numbers, you can see that
beautiful stroke.
And that's what we talked about during the initial part of the season.
You just see the shot.
It's beautiful.
You know, it's six foot eight, six foot nine with the size that he has and the ability
to grow more into that body.
You see a guy with the skill set that is going to have to be fixed on the defensive end.
And that's what Ben McCollum and his staff, that's going to be a big
part of this. But he put out the call to arms. He was on a
station that I work on, KXNO, the Iowa Sports Radio Network
across the state of Iowa on Monday morning with Sean
Roberts and David Eichel. And again, he put it out. Can't end
here. Need more.
And they want Josh Dix back.
And they want to bring back Price Samford.
Now I still wonder
financially about the Josh Dix
part of it. Some of the offers
that are out there, some of the numbers
that we hear as
it pertains to a player like Josh Dix
who is a tremendous college
basketball player. But we also watched is a tremendous college basketball player.
But we also watched him over the last three years and there were times and big
moments where he wasn't there. There were some no-shows and that kind of money for a
guy that certainly has not shown the consistency it's crazy. Of course Iowa
wants him back. Why wouldn't you? You want a player like that.
You want a player that you can plug in. A guy that can play both ends of the floor.
A guy that can go out there and get you 20. A guy that can hit a game with her like you
did against Northwestern. Yeah, you want that guy. But if the difference is that guy at
one and a half, $2 million or three or four guys to build out your roster, that's the math
that Ben McCollum has to come up with. And that's what you have to figure out. You want
to keep pushing, make it happen, donate to the swarm, do all the things as fans that
we have to do to make it happen. Which you do wonder, looking at it, if it would
make more sense in roster construction to put all your eggs in the ben- Josh Dix. Maybe
that's the thing though. Maybe Ben McCullum looks at this basketball-wise and believes
a backcourt of Sturtz and Dix. We're going to be fine everywhere else. And if we put
those two guys together, we're going to be in great shape. Great shape though for Iowa getting
Cooper Koch back. We'll see. Price-Amford is the one that Illinois involved, Nebraska
involved. Those were a couple of the initial spots. Same thing with Josh Dix. Kansas looks
to be maybe, some people believe it's down to Iowa and Kansas for him. We'll see on that
front regardless of the way this all plays out. But the work continues to be done by coach McCollum.
We jump over to the other basketball team, the women's basketball team, and on Monday it was
announced that Leah Guyton has entered the transfer portal. Again, not a surprise if you saw any of the
tweets from her dad AJ Guyton, yes the former Indiana Hoosier. He was, first of all, right after the
retirement of Lisa Bluter, freaking out. At different times during the course of the year,
freaking out. At different moments during the year, asking how you would enter, go about entering
the transfer portal. When you recruit a player, you're not just recruiting that player, you're recruiting their whole family.
And from afar, looked a little heavy handed. Again, don't know the guidance, just going what I saw.
And what I saw on social media. And there were times, head scratching. Head scratching scratching posts that were put out there by Dan.
So be it. She's on. Now, Iowa has already been involved with the transfer from Arizona in
Jayden Williams. There's a possibility, though it's a long shot, I don't know if I was going to be
able to land financially Olivia Miles from Notre
Dame. Probably not. A new name, and Kyle Heusman from Hawkeye Report had this one,
Gail Reveve from Quinnipiac who had a great freshman year. Look, they've been shopping
for point guards. We saw Aliyah Guyton, and I understand. She's coming off an ACL tear
her senior year of high school. She's still just a freshman.
Talk about inconsistency.
We saw that a ton.
And I think Aliyah Guyton is going
to be a really good player eventually.
But I don't think she was going to be even
on the verge of an honorable mention, all big 10 point
card for next year.
And that's what they need.
To keep this ship running, to stay on the tracks,
to continue the momentum of this basketball program, you have to keep the momentum going.
And I don't think you do that with Guyton as your starter next year.
It's too important.
Iowa has an opportunity.
And if you watched the last two nights, these elite eight games, you know the gap between the elite level teams and programs like Iowa. Now
when you have a generational talent in Caitlin Clark, you could close that gap
and we saw that, but that's what it takes. In order though to build to become on
the level of a South Carolina, a UConn, you're in, you're out those programs you
have to build up.
And you're going to recruit over people,
including players like Guyton.
That's the new reality.
It's a different reality.
If I was gonna be swimming in these waters
and they're gonna become a women's college basketball
blue blood, these are the things that are going to happen.
You're going to recruit over players.
We continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast. More basketball talk, we'll get the thoughts of Scott Dockerman
from the Athletic on Ben McCollum's hiring, and we're going to talk some spring football all to come.
Scott Dockerman joins us next on the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast.

Scott let's jump into little Iowa topics and last week we get the news on Monday
that it's going to be a Ben McCollum it happens early in the morning.
Everything's happening there.
We see the press conference doc you've been to a lot of press conferences
and it's not about winning a press conference,
but that's about as close to winning a press conference
for a guy that I think a lot of Iowa fans
didn't know a ton about outside of maybe watching the game
against Missouri, hitting a home run.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter.
It's what you do between the lines.
It's going to matter.
But I thought Ben McCollum,
that was about as good as I have ever seen,
and a time that maybe Iowa men's basketball
really needed a guy like that.
It was a tremendous introduction to what Ben McCollum,
who Ben McCollum is, what he stands for,
and what he's going to be.
And, you know, and growing up in Storm Lake, Iowa,
you don't know what his rooting interests
were growing up.
I mean, that's, you know, in the northwest corner of the state, is he a Cyclone fan?
Is he an Iowa fan?
Is he Nebraska?
You know, does he care at all about different college teams, maybe centered more on the
pro teams in Minnesota?
Instead, he is a diehard Hawkeye from birth.
He has pictures of him and Dr.
Tom Davis to bring up players like Montyre,
Glassburn, Val Barnes.
And, and, uh, I think really showed that he paid attention and watched those
games and he attended those games.
And then he, you know, talked to, he talked about winning the MVP of his
hometown camp and the Hawkeye Hustler
award and got it for Bruce Pearl just to have to be coaching in the final four.
I mean, it shows that he is very much in tune to Hawkeye history.
And that is a juicy slice of red knee to Iowa fans who sorely need it right now.
Because the one thing I've kind of come to the conclusion with this program is, and
I grew up in the 80s or 90s and really watched it up close, had friends play at Iowa and
certainly friends attending Iowa and hung out with them.
And that is that Iowa has incredible history, but the tradition has completely waned over
the last 25 years.
And some of it is self-inflicted, some of it is just kind of the byproduct of not being able to
reach any kind of level of expectation that their fan base wants. And I think what Ben McCollum does
is he builds that bridge back to that history, that people that remember those teams of the 80s and 90s know that their
coach lived it the way they lived it and that's really impressive and really
important now but I'll say this the most important thing he can do is spell out
a vision for how this program can return to that level and I'm not talking about
just dr. Tom's level the last 11 years I'm talking about boots level for that and I thought he spelled out his vision for this program what he wants to do on the floor
How he wants to play his record is is you know, and I think all of that really came out and
sold a vision and
You know granted he has to go do it. He has to do it in the transfer portal
He has to bring back some of the players who are still in it that are Iowa players.
He has to bring a few from Drake.
But ultimately, I think that the course is set that he feels like he could be successful
at Iowa and I have no reason to doubt him based on his history.
Yeah, he has definitely shown that he's been a winner everywhere he is and, and the
grinder and you know, that's the conversation with DeVries who was of course the flavor of the day for a couple of days there
and you look at Ben McCollum I was never going to be Indiana basketball as it pertains to NIL
they're never going to be able to financially compete with some programs of the Big Ten brethren
ultimately Ben McCollum very well could be the better fit because he feels like the kind of guy
and there's no guarantee
It's going to happen
But he's gonna be able to squeeze the most juice out of what he has because he's proven he can do that
And I think some of that goes to style of play Trent when you look at
France style of play which is very entertaining and I think history will be kind to him for what he did at Iowa as
it should be. But I also think that when you play an up tempo offensive style of play,
you kind of, if you don't have elite athletes, you surrender a lot on the defensive end and
because it's hard to play two ways unless you are, you know, just the most talented
athletes on the floor.
And that wasn't the case in Iowa.
You had great athletes, great players,
but just not be able to do it both ways.
I think what Ben McCollum's system does,
and I know people have been either rather critical
or a little put off or whatever
by some of the slowdown of it.
I disagree.
I think it's a smart system
because kind of like with Kirk Fentz in football, you're
not going to be able to play a raid at Iowa and be successful.
You know how to get players in your region who can fit your scheme and execute it.
And I think that's what Ben McCollum is capable of doing is going out and get somebody like
Peyton Sanford, who I thought in his scheme would have been an even better player than
he was in France's style of play.
And I think you're more than capable of getting those players to execute highly efficient
offense, rugged defense, do all the little things that can help them win games.
And when you look at NIL talking to Beth Getz after her little media scrum and um and also ben mccallum is
there they're not going to shirk from that it it was probably overblown and over played the lack
of nil that iowa had yes it was it was tough but they still had pretty good players there this year
uh but going forward i think that iowa is going to be mid-pack in that. And I think when you look at it, you know,
and all the other aspects of sport, I think that's probably a fair place to be.
Let's talk some football. Scott Dockerman joining us from The Athletic. And doc,
spring practice, you get Kirk Ferentz. And I'll tell you, I was listening to it, picking up my son
on the way to his school. And then I went back and read the transcript. I mean, it hit all the notes. It was all the Kirk isms that you'd anticipate for a spring press press
conference that you get out of him. Um, just an overview of this squad, you know, I come
into the year, Grunowski certainly created some excitement, but you know, you look through
this team lost a ton off of last year's team.
Sure. That's, that's going to be the first thing you look at. Um, I, I would say, you
know, we have kind of, I think since Mark Grunowski committed to Iowa and then you kind
of everybody's focus and attention has kind of flipped over to, um, basketball. Um, but
this is a huge signing. I mean, this is as big of a free agent signing I was ever had in any sport.
Um, and he has the potential to do some really terrific things.
He's still healing from it, you know, a slightly torn labrum that, uh, I think
will be, uh, you know, fully healed by June.
So he'll be able to, I don't know, soft toss or do something other things.
The spring probably participate in everything, but really hardcore throwing, but he'll be able to, I don't know, soft toss or do something other things this spring, probably participate in everything but really hardcore throwing, but he'll be fine.
I think he's got a chance to really elevate the offense.
I think defense is right now what you're looking at is, you know, how do you replace, you know,
Jay Higgins, Y.A. Black and some, you know, some of the other Sebastian Castro.
That's going to be their core challenge now.
What you've got to hope for is you're really focused on your development and your development
takes root and improves this team throughout the spring and into the summer.
It's probably not going to look the same.
It's probably not going to be quite as successful, but I don't think Iowa is going to put out
a marginal even on defense. So if Mark Grunowski can make up for that,
the lack of an elite defense with better quarterback play,
and I think he has a chance to be the best quarterback
Iowa's had at minimum since Bethard,
and if not back further,
then I think that this could be a successful year
and maybe an under the radar season for the Hawks.
So we didn't see the transfer showing up
on the depth chart that was released.
Sam Phillips coming in helping out at wide receiver, Jonah Pace at defensive tackle along
with Price Hawthorne.
I thought one of the more intriguing things that showed up there is when you looked at
the defensive end position, Joseph Anderson, you obviously remember that class of defense
linemen they brought in a season ago back a year ago signing day
There was NFL bloodlines up and down there and to see Anderson. I know we're gonna get obviously the return
We're gonna see Alan back in there and he's gonna be pushing for time
Kenneth Merriweather who we continue to hear buzz about but just seeing his name out there
Let's create a little bit excitement for me because you know that skill set, that starter pack that he has coming in athletically.
Yeah, absolutely.
And I mean, his weight is listed,
I think it's probably low.
I'm sure he's probably a little higher than 224,
but with his skill set and he's, you know,
he could compete in the big 10 in track,
in the triple jump and long jump.
He's just got that burst to him.
And if you can get a burst off your edge, and even if he's not full service and
you're not the type of guy you want him to play all the time on first down and
running situations, but if he could show some pass rush ability and maybe on
third down or passing downs, you could bring him in and let him kind of,
you know, come off the edge.
I think that's a huge asset to this team and this defense
because, you know,
I think Max Llewellyn is ready to take that step forward.
I think he was probably the best defensive end
they had last year.
Ethan Hurkett is a solid hardcore guy.
You're thrilled to get him back.
Aaron Graves has a chance to really take that next step
as well and become, go from thrilled to get him back. Aaron Graves has a chance to really take that next step as well and
become go from good to great.
Um, you've got some question marks in the, in the interior, whether that's Jonah
pace or who comes in, Jeremiah Pittman, possibly Bryce Hart Hawthorne, but, and
then Brian Allen, of course we'll be back.
He's he's out for the spring.
Uh, but I think overall that they're going to be pretty salty up front. It's just a matter
of can they take that next step. And I think in the last year they just missed that huge
rush and or, you know, pass rush off the edge. And if Joseph Anderson can provide that 10
snaps a game, they're way better off than were a year ago.
Finally doc left tackle. You look at it, it's guys that we know the names, but we just
haven't seen them out there a whole lot. I know Lauk has been kind of commended, a guy
that built themselves up and they beat some good teams to get him a couple of years ago
out of Indianapolis. Do you think it's just going to be as simple as what they see in
spring practice if they're going to go shopping for a left tackle or are they happy where
they are right now with the offensive line is specifically left tackle? Well, there's a huge question mark there, Trent.
We know that Jack Dotsler is a guy that they've got penciled in at number one.
He's somebody that I talked on the side with with George last year and and Barnett and
he was he really thought his progress was coming along strong that he is he had elevated
himself to being in the rotation
last year is how he kind of put it to me and when we talked before at football game.
And so he's going to get first crack at it. Trevor Lauk's going to get a crack at it.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if Cannon Leonard or even some of the newer guys that showed up last
year or the year before. I mean, they're all going to get good, strong looks at that position.
It really has come down to Jennings Dunker,
they wanna leave him on the right side
where he's more comfortable.
And he was one of the best run blockers
in the country last year.
I think he graded out his fourth by PFF overall.
And so rather than flip him over the left side
and get him used to doing something different,
they figured they're gonna work in the left side and get him used to doing something different. They figured they're going to work in the left side with somebody new.
Now that could be challenging for somebody, but, but then again,
Mason Richmond started four years.
So, and I don't think Mason was anywhere near prepared for it his first year.
And it wasn't until last year where he really started playing well.
So I think they're going to give it this spring.
If they don't like what they see,
then they'll rally the base up to try to get $800,000 or so,
whatever it costs for a big 10 left tackle.
Otherwise, they're going to just promote from within
and ride it out.
That's got Dr. Min from the Athletic
talking a little Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball.

sports that are out there but it's been a pretty fun start to
the spring season for both of those and it just continues to
build for excuse me the Iowa baseball team after they go to
Minnesota this week. So the golfers record doesn't look
great though but their RPI was really good. I would goes up
there and they went all three games they sweep the series get
the win sixteen seven in the opener then have to play a
double header so they moved it up they played Thursday then
two on Friday sixteen seven in game one a thirteen nothing
shut out and then finish off the sweep with a seven six win
in the getaway day up there. There's also some hijinks
that were happening apparently with some of those gophers. Oh boy, you never know with those gophers
what they're up to there. Now here's the thing. So Iowa dug themselves a little bit of a hole.
You kind of look back and losing three out of four to Washington State, that was absolutely a stinger.
Losing two out of three against South Florida. Feels like you maybe could have stolen another win out of there.
That's a team that's in the top 50 of the RPI.
But still, Iowa's got a lot of work
to do to build any kind of resume that's
going to get them in consideration for a large bid.
Obviously, the automatic bid that comes with winning
the Big Ten tournament.
But that structure is going to be crazy now
in this expanded Big Ten tournament, obviously.
And the 18 teams, well, 17, no, what? What do we
got? No Wisconsin in baseball, as they do not have a program,
but all battle and try to get just a spot into the big 10
tournament in that conversation. So last week, they lose a mid
week game. As teams won what 12 out of 14 now, something like
that, but they lose a mid week game. His teams won what 12 out of 14 now something like that but they lose a midweek game one that you just really can't afford to have. So you lose to Illinois State. Now on Monday excuse me Tuesday April 1st it's April Fool's Day. You're taking on Bradley who's three and twenty. Yes it's on, but come on. Can't lose that one. You know,
another part of the schedule is they had a game scheduled back in March at home against
St. Thomas up in St. Paul, newer division one program, pretty good program. There's
a few Iowa kids that have played up there recently and they have a really good RPI themselves.
In fact, they're 60th in the RPI as we sit here this evening. And that game has been
canceled. Kind of like to have that one back on the schedule, but Bradley get the wind
Tuesday. Then he go to Northwestern midweek game next week against a bad Milwaukee team.
And then it's the Huskers after that April 11th through the 13th and. Huskers are off
to a bit of a slow start look the work there is a lot of it
that needs to be done to get back into that kind of talk
and maybe this team being an NCAA tournament team but
remember back those years and what heller's been able to do
just a great great scene overall softball team didn't go
as well after that
great start and of course the win in the Big Ten against top
five ranked UCLA came back to earth a little bit as they fell
over the weekend still they got themselves in a really really
good opportunity themselves to potentially make the Big Ten
tournament which would be a big accomplishment we'll see if
they can keep their heads above water as they move make their
way through the Big Ten slate. In fact, I'm
gonna watch the Iowa softball team coming up this weekend.
That's right. And over to Iowa City. Gonna be uh playing on
my daughter's in a softball tournament over there and then
we're gonna stay over and and go over to the game on Sunday
against Nebraska. So, hopefully a big cheering section there
and let's uh quiet down those Huskers who by the way
themselves are ranked in the top twenty five. Out of time
