We're going to be talking some football, breakout candidates for this year, some names maybe flying under the radar that need to have big seasons for the Iowa football program. We'll also get into some over-unders. He's done a fun job. I'm taking a look at some numbers and guys that are going to be better

or worse than the numbers that he set out there. We'll talk about that. And the battery, another huge performance over the weekend at Peach Jam and one of the most coveted prospects in college basketball where Iowa sits at this point in time. And here he is Elliott Clough from Hawkeye Insider.com, part of the great group over there pushing out that content

through the summer months as we get ready for the season. to begin once again. Elliot, an off season that has been pretty fun, interesting. You know, talked a lot about football and the quarterback conversation. We'll talk a little bit more football with you a little bit later on. But it's been interesting to see. And I wonder if your numbers over there, Hawkeye Insider is saying the same kind of thing. Basketball recruiting. This was a big deal back when I was in college almost 30 years ago. This was a big deal about what are they doing, the number of prospects. Iowa basketball recruiting is back. Yeah, it is. I mean, this is something that, you know, you mentioned the numbers.

Numbers were not great prior to, prior to this run by Iowa and men's basketball recruiting and the coaching change and everything. But especially now with Caden Dottry popping off this weekend, those numbers are doing pretty well. I mean, I posted, you're with us over there, Hawkeye Insider. I posted a picture of a fish that I caught on vacation. Big, big king salmon. I said, what's the biggest fish you've? ever got just to start a conversation. And somebody said, I'm hoping the biggest fish that Ben McCollum catches is Caden Daughtry. And so that that has maintained after Peach Jam especially. So lots of engagement there at Hawkeye Insider right now. And even on Twitter and such with what happened

over the weekend. So for people that did miss it, it may be not as deep into it here on the podcast side of things. Cain Dottery, a top 10 player now nationally with the consensus rankings. This is a guy, I think his high is number nine out there. And maybe after this weekend's going to go even higher when we see the update to the rankings that are out there. He is a bit undersized as a point guard. He's not a thick guy by any means, six foot, six one, something like that. But the dude's just an absolute winner. And hit the trifecta won his state tournament down in Florida this past season on the high school level,

hit it again with Peach Jam, what he did during the AAU circuit, just some absolutely incredible things. And it's not just that he was a winner. He put his team on his back over this weekend, had a 40. plus point performance. He is so skilled. And even though he's not a big guy, he plays bigger than he is. Just take us through a little bit over the weekend and how this guy, yes, a top 10 player that I was in a really good spot for how maybe his start even drew a little bit brighter this weekend. Yeah, you know, you mentioned the fact that he's just a winner, which is absolutely true.

But he is a, the engine as to why his team wins, right? He's what makes the team go. And like you said, 40-point performance. It's not like, oh, he does the intangible thing. He's a good leader, which is all true, but you factor in the point there, the fact that he's scoring so much that he's distributing the ball, that he's getting rebounds even at his size, 5-11, 6-foot. The playmaking is just elite, the speed, the control of the game, the IQ. Like, it's like he's playing college-ready basketball right now, like Big 10 college-ready basketball right now. ACC college ready basketball right now. It's not that he's just playing great for a high school,

or it's that he's playing great basketball. This is like one and done type of talent, even at his size, just because of the shot making, the playmaking, the vision, the like I said, the IQ when and where to be on defense.

He's not slacking off on defense either, which is another big calling card for Ben McCollum. One thing that we've constantly heard is if you don't play defense, you're not going to play, right? So Daughtry, though he is the player he is on offense, he's not taking possessions off defensively either. And I think, you know, obviously you've got the Bennett Sturts calling card, but the fact that Sturts played 40 minutes in every single NCAA tournament game, that's probably a calling card for Daughtry, too, of like, I can take the keys and play the entire game and become a better player and be part of this culture and win a bunch of games. So Iowa's in a really good spot.

Do I know if that continues, we shall see, like after such a big weekend, that arguably the biggest basketball tournament in the country, they're probably going to be some Blue Bloods, Colin, probably going to be some schools up in the ante in terms of how much money they can offer. But for right now, Iowa is in a good spot. And Ben McCollum is a very confident, confident basketball recruiter, knows what he has to offer, knows what he brings to the table. and that's a really good thing when you're going after a recruit at this level.

And even if they, you know, if they were to miss on Caden Dottry, they got other options, too, and Jackson Davis. But in a few others, I think Chase Lumpkin is another one. Sean is really on the men's basketball recruiting, but I am following along. I'll tell you that. And I'm able to see some things here and there. But, yeah, I mean, Daughtry is just sensational. Like this is program changing type of player.

This is, I mean, you move, you get a recruit like this and you move the trajectory from Elite 8 being that was an awesome year to, if you continue to get players like this, that becomes sort of the expectation. So we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. But Daughtry is that type of player. So when we look at the recruiting, I was in a really good. Good spot. We've, funny, listening to Sean over there, listening, you know, the other recruiting services and,

and even people inside the industry that don't have Hawkeye affiliation, that I was the leader. It doesn't feel like anybody wants to come out and just say, Iowa leads and maybe it's a pretty big gap. However, you mentioned over the weekend putting together yet another performance like this. Michigan, well, Dusty may departing. And though they're still involved there, the home state schools, Miami, Florida State, they've been involved for a long time. Yukon started sniffing around a little bit more. you have that component Louisville, Duke

those Louisville and Kentucky I guess I should put together they certainly have money that they could outspend Iowa but the relationship that continues to be there you feel good at that front what about that next tier of Blue Blood though and specifically what if Duke calls

does that change the equation and the equation for Caden Dattrie? You know that again I mentioned Sean I think he would have a better beat on that better understanding of how that goes but in just general understanding of recruiting and the college basketball landscape, if Duke comes calling, things tend to change, right?

That's a program that's, I mean, you get a great education there. And again, he might be a one and done guy. But you get a great education. They have the illustrious history. John Shire has taken over and done a really good job with that program, even after the moving on of Coach K. So you have to consider that. And like Louisville, you mentioned, that's one of the,

those programs, like Alvaro Fulgaris would have, I mean, for everything that happened in the NTA tournament this last year would have been dumb to pass up on the type of offer he got from a program like Louisville. Now, granted, they're not, they are not in a good financial situation. So who's to say that that continues? But this, this is something to monitor. You can feel good as a Hawkeye fan. You can feel hopeful. It's not, it's not of the prior administration, so to speak, where it's like, okay, I was going to be in the top five and then they're going to move on and they were never really a contender, but they were involved. It's not like that anymore. I mean, and you can go back to the first recruit that they really landed.

That wasn't, you know, a flip over from Drake and Trey Thompson. I remember watching that game and we were, I think it was on the AAU circuit. It was 3SB. It was in Omaha when I was at the other place. and Iowa United was playing, and they were playing against, I think Tennessee Impact is the name of the organization that Trey Thompson came from. And I just saw him, he was just dominated, best player on the floor. And I saw that Iowa offered after that game, Ben McCollum offered, said, he's not coming here. And then that got done in about four weeks.

So he's not coming to Iowa, you know. And that he did. And of course, we're still waiting and seeing what that's going to look like this coming year. but with Ben McCollum, with this recruiting staff, Josh Sash has done a phenomenal job. Luke Barnwell, done a phenomenal job. Connor Wheeler. I mean, you can go down the line with this group, Reiston Williams, and they're not all recruiting and Daughtry. I'm sure they've all talked to them. But yeah, this group of coaches, especially with Ben McCollum, have done a phenomenal job in the

recruiting trail this far. You're not going to get everybody, right? That's just not college basketball or recruiting. general. But to be this involved, and he was one of the, Iowa was one of the first programs to offer him. I mean, in that, that article that Sean got over the weekend from, thanks to Nick Oson, from Badger 24-7, was down there at Peach Jam, interviewed Daughtry for us. He said, oh, it's, this is a year anniversary from when Iowa offered me. Wow. Like, how do you, you don't remember that unless it's special, you know what I mean, special to you. So definitely something to keep tabs on, definitely something to be hopeful for for Iowa fans.

I also saw something on the message boards. I don't know the validity of this. If you have heard, he is related to Brad Banks and CJ Jones. Have you heard this? I have not. Yeah, like some probably like fourth cousins or something like that. But apparently there is something there,

something in the bloodlines that, yeah, their cousins down the line, something like that, maybe third cousins, which age wise would make a little bit more sense. But if that is true, hey, we're absolutely, make the phone call,

Brad, CJ, make it happen. get this young man, get your little cousin up to Iowa City. And if we can have some of the fun that we had with both those guys back on the day on the football field with him on the basketball floor, we're going to be going a long way. So final thing on this front. And the way that Sean Bachover at Hawkeye Insider dubbed it, what was it? That he wouldn't change place.

Iowa wouldn't change places with anybody in the country right now with his recruitment. Is that how he said it? Yep, yep. Yeah, that's pretty much it. I mean, and that was going into the weekend. And that was, I think, during the weekend as well, like we've talked about here. I mean, Duke, Yukon, like, these are some legitimate programs with some legitimate money that will be competition for Iowa. At least, I mean, Daughtry can't just flat out say no, right?

Like, if Minnesota gets involved or if, you know, one of these other programs, regional programs, say, like, forgive me, like, I, Minnesota felt like the best one. Minnesota gets involved. And even like an SEC program like a Georgia or, you know, something like an ACC like, yeah. He can be fine. Very, very quickly, you know, I'm good. I'm just, I'm rolling with Iowa. It's not that if it's Duke or if it's Yukon or if it's one of these blue blood programs.

So Iowa not locked in as his choice won't be until he signs on the dotted line. but they are in a good spot. He will be in Iowa City for his official visit, the Sihawk weekend, which should be hopefully a fun one on the football field. We'll talk about that football team. Elliot, want to jump into some football. I don't want to start with your breakout candidates. I'm going to go a different direction here because I just so enjoyed that article.

You talked about a couple of fourth-year players. I know you had another one up on third-year players. And I want to start just about now how we're calling these guys. It's no longer freshmen, softening. Like, just to simplify it. And I saw it on the roster pages over at hawkiesports.com is the way that they did that. I guess it simplifies things. But is that where we're going to go?

Like when we get to football season, do you think that's how the play-by-play broadcasters and everybody? Is that just how we're going to be talking about these guys now, first through fifth years? Probably. You know, I looked at a few other sites throughout preparing for the season, right? some different articles. And for the most part, that's what I've seen. I think it really, like you said, it simplifies it. I mean, you could say fifth year senior, but that's been a thing, right? It's a different type of eligibility at this point. Fifth year seniors were previously either redshirt or medical waiver type of situation. Now everybody can do that if they want to. So,

I mean, Rees-Vanderzee is a different type of fifth year senior than like a Michael Mizlinsky would have been last year, right? So I think that, distinction keeps things a little bit clear. Ms. Linsky still has eligibility and he's a six year. So this year is going to be weird. I mean, even after COVID, like the COVID years are gone and done with the NCAA found another way to make it confusing. So here we are. But yeah, I would imagine that's how it's going to go. That's how I'm going to do it, at least for the time being, unless the general populace of writers and broadcasters does something different. So you talk about some of those breakout candidates.

And the first one is Kenneth Meriwether. And I have a couple of memories of Maryweather last year. Part of the rotation at defensive end, the most veteran guy, I guess, at that defensive line spot overall, him in Hawthorne, probably when he talked about defensive tackle, not sure in the snaps that they had a year ago. But Meriwether also had a couple of head scratching plays a year ago, had the penalty against Indiana,

set them up for a field goal at the end of the half, had another one throughout the course of the season. it just a maturity? Is it a rep thing? Because Kenneth Maryweather, definitely you can tell he's got some skill to him. I mean, this is a guy big size at the defensive end spot. He looks the part out there. Is it as simple as just a young player a year ago making some mistakes in his first extended period? And what kind of growth do you expect out of Maryweather? That's what I would say, the maturity thing. And as a leader of this group, you have to know that Kelvin Bell will not put up with that type of thing going into

this year. Kelvin Bell is absolutely. Absolutely a no-nonsense guy. All right, we've got Elliott back with us here. You were talking about Kenneth Merriweather. Yeah, so stepping into a leadership role this year, he and both Hawthorne are after kind of being in the backseat the last few years. Hawthorne, of course, a transfer from South Dakota State. But this is a different situation for Kenneth Meriwether as opposed to last year

where he was just part of the rotation, more or less. This year, he's stepping into a leadership role. He's stepping into a role where, he's probably going to be expected to be one of the guys in terms of racking up stats in terms of causing disruption in a pass rush. Kelvin Bell will not put up with that type of issue, those type of penalties from one of his leaders. He is very honest. He's going to tell you what he's thinking, why he's thinking it, and he's not the type of coach that will let that type of thing slide. So in my mind, Kenneth Meriwether will move on from that kind of thing.

And if he, you know, one of those things happened, Kelvin will either pull him or or tell him, you know, you do it again and I'm going to pull you or something like that, right? So to me, Kenneth, you know, you mentioned the tools, the skill set. I think he has that skill set to be Iowa's top pass rusher. We'll see if it gets put onto the field this coming year. But there is, I mean, a group of guys, you know, in a different breakout article, I included Camari Brown. I'm writing the second year breakout article.

I'm talking about Yosea Pena. So there's just a crew of guys. guys on the defensive line that have that potential. It's about who puts it together on the football field this year for the defensive line group. I mean, I included Drew Campbell in there, too. Who knows? Like, there are so many guys that either haven't seen the field at Iowa or haven't seen

the field, period, in a football game in the college level. So this group is just really green. And it's a lot of question marks, but a lot of potential, too. So there's a lot of ways this group can go between the defensive. tackle and defensive end spots. So you talk about Hawthorne and I believe if this defensive tackle spot, the biggest question mark for the Iowa football team, Hawthorne's got to have a big year. I mean, he needs to be out there probably playing 70% of the snap, something like that.

We'll see what they can fill in behind him and what happens there. But I just think he is such a huge important piece to everything that Iowa defenses is this season. Am I putting too much on the plate for Hawthorne? No, and it's because of that an experience that the rest of the roster has. Like even Emmanuel Olaq Baju, who is a big guy and was brought in from the portal, hasn't really played much college football because of injury at St. Thomas. And even in playing in, I think, nine games last year for North Dakota, he only had 10 tackles or something like that.

So there's the potential there, but it's about putting it on. the field and then you look at a Devin Kennedy and a Brad Fitzgibbon and it's they're still pretty young, kind of small. Kennedy looks bigger than the 281 that he's listed in. So kind of interesting there. Fitzgibbon still looking a little small relative to what you want him to be at the defensive tackle spot. I would not say that to his face because he's still at least twice the size of me. But that said, the group is still in a position where it's just, I don't know. We just don't know. We just don't know.

The only thing we do know, two guys we do know are Hawthorne and Merriweather. And neither of them had a sack, not even half a sack last year on the defensive line. And Hawthorne came in with some big expectations after being a freshman, All-American at the FCS level, and at South Dakota State, which is one of the best programs the country has to offer at the FCS level. So Hawthorne needs to take a big step forward, but so does the rest of the defensive line group. You put the onus on him and Maryweather first, but what about the rest of the group? There's a reason I have the breakout candidates, and all of them have included defensive line players so far.

It's because they need it. They need, if it's not Hawthorne, if it's not Maryweather, they need something from the rest of these guys. One other player I thought was interesting on your breakout candidates out of this list was Dayton Howard. And I am not slowing down the Tony Diaz hype train. I am all aboard. I'm ready to be hurt again. I'm ready for it. If it happens, so be it. Evan James and obviously Reese Vander Z, who we saw when he's been healthy, how good he can be.

Dayton Howard is interesting. A couple of big plays, that Rutgers play that helped solidify that victory on the road early in the season a year ago. What he was able to do there, had an early score against USC. You see just the sheer size of him, putting it all together. We know he's got the physicality. He can block now. Putting all those things together. What have you heard about Howard? Because I've heard a couple of things that at least at minimum kind of gets you in terms. intrigued about what he can be this year and maybe we're sleeping a little bit on Dayton Howard.

So the main thing I would say that I've heard is that we reference the maturity thing with Kenneth Meriwether is that Dayton Howard has taken a big step in terms of maturity in terms of leadership. That's big. I mean, you would, just based on what we've seen on the field, you would think that'd be a Reese Vander Zee position, but Dayton Howard has really made the wide receiver group his this offseason. and he is one of the more seasoned guys in that group. So there's that. I've also heard that, you know, I said, I talking to a source recently,

he's like, okay, Reese Vander Z and Tony Diaz are the top two guys, right? Like, it's them and then a gap. And I was like, and that source told me, don't, don't skimp out on Dayton Howard either. You know, he hasn't had over 100 receiving yards in a single season yet. He hasn't had double digit catches in a season yet. So this might be the time that, you know, I think, I think DJ Benami is going to be the safety net safety valve type of guy in the receiver or that, you know, the past catchers. When a play breaks down, you go to DJV, right? You can trust him.

Reese Vander Z might be in that group. Tony Diaz might be in that group. Dayton Howard might be in that group. Big guy, big catch radius. I mean, like you said, he made some tough catch. The USC was a tough catch and Rutgers was a tough catch. And the Rutgers one was a critical play for the game to be in hand for Iowa. And Grinowski launched it down there and Howard went up and got it.

So he's not one that I'm discounting. One could say he's had his breakout moments, but he hasn't had a breakout season. Right. So this could be a breakout season for Dayton Howard. Again, I think the physical tools are absolutely there. You throw in the maturity, the leadership, and you think that maybe he's a guy that's really earned the trust of the staff and the quarterback room even.

One more of your breakout candidates. And it's a guy that I haven't talked about a ton, though it feels like he is going to be a starter for the Iowa defense. And maybe that should be something talk about a little bit more. And that is Qamari Brown, a guy that is intriguing, can go out there. Is it a rotational piece? Is it a starter right away? We'll see about that.

But when you talk about Kamari Brown, showed an ability to get to the quarterback at the other level. But I saw when they updated the roster, the awake game that he had coming in from Elon, a guy that just feels like there's going to be some kind of role for him. How big of a season could it be for a guy like Kamari role, knowing that Kelvin Bell, they demand excellence up there.

You have to do everything right to play defensive line. And coming in as a newbie, that is tough to do. It is, especially coming from a place like Elon where you could tee off on the quarterback and play with that type of violence and get what you wanted at the FCS level. It's a different level of competition here in the Big Ten, right? It's also a very specific defensive line scheme. You're playing two gaps, right? You have to cover both gaps.

And that doesn't afford you the opportunities that it might at other programs where you can just rush off the edge and try to get after the quarterback and you trust your linebackers to make the play. And that's still a thing at Iowa, right? You're the, the, the design of the defense is to funnel tackles to the linebackers. And that can result in lack of statistics, lack of production from the defensive line. You're also designing the pass rush to cause disruption, cause turnovers rather than rack up sacks. But Kamari Brown is, I might be wrong on this, but I think he's the only player. I need to double check this. The only player on the roster this year that has happened.

a season with double-digit sacks anywhere. It was 12.5 and then he had 16 and a half tackles for loss total last year at Elon. And he actually played the run pretty well, too. It wasn't just, oh, he's getting after the quarterback. He had a high grade on PFF in terms of his run defense. But, you know, I think the majority of the fan base is leaning towards Yosea Pinesa being the starter just because he has that name, right? He has, and it's not, sorry, I shouldn't say just because, because he has that name, because he's a five-star coming in, because he's a legacy hawkeye, because he's seen it at the high school level.

He looked like a bear amongst boys, not a man amongst boys, a bear amongst boys playing high school ball there at Edwardsville. And, you know, I think there are some similarities in their game, actually, in terms of the violence with which they play. but Brown has really earned some respect in the locker room at this point, and I'm not saying that Yose hasn't, but Brown has really, really bought in and earned the respect of the guys next to him. So he could be the starter. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if either one were the starter opposite of Kenneth Mary with him.

And Tyler was on that team a year ago that played in the college football playoff. He is a third year prospect, meaning he's got three years of eligibility in front of him. He is a guy that a lot of people have penciled in as a starter,

maybe at one of the safety spots back on the back end of the Phil Parker defense. And this is a guy just more and more talking to a couple of people. His name just continues to come up that he's going to be more than solid, more than just a guy that comes in and fills a role and is a starter for you right away, that they love the upside that he can bring, the physicality that he's going to have on the back end of this defense and feeling now taking another step forward. Now, yeah, great coaching of James Madison. Don't get me wrong. But coming into the Phil Parker coupled with just the way he is, the way he has built, the skill set that he has, that yes, we know that Lutmer is going to be an absolute stud out there. And we're very solid Deshaun Lee is going to be good outside of the side there at cornerback. And they're going to figure out a bunch of different things. We might be sleeping on Tyler Brown. And we're talking about breakout candidates, a guy that we look back at the end of the season.

He has a half dozen tackles for loss. He's got three interceptions. He's got 75 tackles. He's just all over the place and becomes beloved.
