Well, some breaking news here on Monday morning as we get the week started.
I thought this was going to be a lot of Iowa basketball talk, and we will get into that.
Iowa on Friday night with the comeback win against Washington State over in Moline.
And the Iowa women with a nice road win against Drake on Sunday.
And we'll get to both of those.
Nice road win against Drake on Sunday.
And we'll get to both of those.
But we start first today with the news that Cade McNamara is back as the starting quarterback for the Iowa football team.
This report comes from Matt Zenitz from CBSSports.com.
Iowa QB Brendan Sullivan, who has started the last two games for the Hawkeyes,
is expected to miss the rest of the regular season due to an ankle injury. A source tells CBS Sports
Iowa closes the regular season against Maryland and Nebraska. Cade McNamara is back in at
quarterback. Continuing on, tweet number two, the injury means Iowa will likely shift back to Cade
McNamara as its starting quarterback this week versus Maryland. There's optimism. McNamara,
who has been working back from a concussion,
will be able to play per a source.
If he can't, Iowa will start third-string quarterback Jackson Stratton,
who we know is actually, well, was the fifth-string quarterback,
to begin the season.
So here we go.
Cade likely back.
Now, coming off the concussion, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
We're talking about a concussion that was sustained in the Northwestern game a month ago. That game was on October 26th.
So by the time we get to game time against Maryland, this is going to be nearly 30 days
removed from that concussion. And the likelihood is that that's, yes, plenty of time to come back
from a concussion. Now, what we don't know, Cade McNamara, if he's had any concussions in the past, at least
I don't know offhand if he had any in Michigan, high school, things like that.
I'm sure that's going to be a question that comes up in the Tuesday press conference with
Kirk Behrens.
But this is it shouldn't be a real big surprise.
We knew that ankle injury was a pretty substantial.
High ankle sprains can take a lot longer than even broken bones at times to come back, depending on the severity of those injuries. And there's a couple of angles. I know
so many of you are just completely out on Cade McNamara. You get it, right? We see Brendan Sullivan,
this guy that is an athlete, a guy that can do things with his legs that McNamara and no other
quarterback on this roster can. Iowa fans also have gone through and just not been able to see
a mobile quarterback for so long. And I think the excitement of that generated what Brendan Sullivan
is and took it to another level. You know, if this was another college program that had guys
that could move around in the past, I don't think the level would be quite at the same range. But
you go back, I mean, old timers, you'll remember guys that can move around and make plays. And it gets exciting, right?
From a C.J. Beathard to even guys like a Drew Tate, who wasn't a scrambler by any means,
but he was just so fluid in the pocket.
His pocket awareness was as good as any college quarterback that you're going to find.
Obviously, Brad Banks, guys like that, that can move the football with their feet, not just with their arm.
And what we've seen recently, Spencer Petras obviously did not have that.
We weren't able to see that.
Nate Stanley was a strong quarterback and could put his head down
and was good at a quarterback sneak as anybody you'll find.
However, he was not a scrambler himself.
That's what you had with Brendan Sullivan.
And now that is off the table.
Another frustrating element for this is what we look towards the future. This is a lost
season. I was sitting at six and four with the expectations coming into the year, the returning
starters, the guys coming back for their fifth, six years. This was supposed to be the year. This
was supposed to be the breakthrough year, and it's not going to happen. Best case scenario is eight
and four. Likely, I don't know, split it down it down the middle seven and five Iowa is a six-point favorite this week at Maryland but road trips are not easy and we've seen this Iowa
football team look completely different away from home a no-show effort against Michigan State
give up a 10-point lead against UCLA the defense has struggled mightily on the road and this is a
Maryland team that's got some dudes offensively so you have all those elements to it who knows if they're gonna win and then you wrap things up against nebraska
another quick week quick turnaround against the huskers and nebraska very well could be playing
for their bull eligibility lives depending what happens with the huskers and wisconsin coming up
of this week but them aside for iowa eight-5, 6-6, it doesn't matter. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter.
What does matter, though, is what happens next.
And these final two games of the year, the hope coming off of bye week
is we were going to be able to see if Brendan Sullivan can be the starter.
If Brendan Sullivan had enough where you go into next year
feeling confident that he can be your guy that is a
starter for 2025. We've talked a lot about 2025 is going to be incredibly difficult. The schedule
ramps up in a huge way. They're going to see what the new Big Ten is going to look like starting
next season. You couple that with so many guys that are going to be moving on, guys that have
exhausted their eligibility, a lot of work that needs to be done in the transfer portal.
But one thing you were, I think, hopeful for
is that we could see here the final two games,
Brendan Sullivan shows enough as a passer that, yes,
he can be your guy for 2025.
That now is off the table.
And you're going to have to go shopping for a transfer quarterback.
And they can get expensive in a big time way.
You're talking about some of the biggest names, the biggest guys that is likely going to be seven
figures to get a top level quarterback and even one that's a mid-level quarterback like a Cade
back to Mara. We're talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars. That's what it costs to
bring in a competent quarterback. Does Iowa have the funds in the NIL to do that? Does the Hawkeye
Swarm want to invest in that? Does the coaching staff want to put that kind of money in after the
way things have gone with Cade McNamara, who came in as damaged goods, and it's been an incredibly
frustrating time. So there's a ton of question marks with this. What we can do with Cade McNamara
is just hope for the best. And there have been moments where you've seen success. We have seen glimpses that Cade McNamara, at minimum, can be an okay quarterback for them.
We talked about him as a passer.
That is his strength, his accuracy.
He is completing 60% of his passes.
Now, Brandon Sullivan's at 68%.
Different sample size, obviously, between the two.
But a 60% completion percentage is something that hasn't
happened at iowa very often certainly in recent times and you have that with mcnamara play to his
strengths get this thing going play behind that big offensive line and figure out what went wrong
against ucla the ucla is a very good rush defense we talked about that going in but the other part
not just caleb johnson was bottled up he wasn't able to find even those lanes. They were crashing down hard and they couldn't make them pay throughout the course of
that one. Also see Jackson Stratton maybe. And if Jackson Stratton can be a guy that you go into
next season, say he can be our backup quarterback. If it is, we're going to bring in a portal
quarterback. We're going to bring in somebody compete with Brendan Sullivan. If you're happy
with Jackson Stratton and minimum being your number three,
I think that's another thing that we possibly could find out here.
I know there's going to be a lot of frustration.
What can you do?
It's an injury.
Injuries happen in football.
And when you play the style of football that Brendan Sullivan is,
this is one of the danger spots.
This is a part of the danger.
We'll get more ready for the Maryland game throughout the course of this week. Of course, a big part of that is going to be the side conversation.
Brian Ferentz, an analyst now with Maryland on the other side. People are going to make a big
deal out of that. We'll see what it's like. I've heard the relationship with Brian and Kirk could
have been a little bit icy after the way everything went down. Look, what's Kirk going to do? Resign?
Because your son got fired because he should have been fired.
He should have been fired more recently than that.
That aside, it'll be a big storyline,
and we'll certainly talk about that here throughout the course of the week
as we get ready for game number 11 of the season.
Boy, does it go too fast.
It was a great weekend for Iowa basketball.
The men with a comeback win
against Washington State in Moline and then the women with a road victory against Drake. We'll
get into those games. Talk a little Iowa basketball with you here on A Monday as we continue. This is

Trent Conant back with you once again on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Football aside for now, let's get into basketball.
And let's start with the men's victory against Washington State.
Now, this is a Washington State team a year ago that made the round of 32,
beat Drake, in fact, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Still new coaching staff, a lot of new faces there.
You wondered exactly how good they were going to
be iowa didn't play great uh stretches of the game against wazoo and as i went back and watched it
i had it on as i was calling the iowa city liberty southeast poke game obviously weren't able to see
a ton listen to the post game and then i watched it again on sunday night i'll tell you it's a
question that we had about this squad and what their best five
is going to be. It doesn't matter who the starters are, not really. It's who the closing group is.
And your closing group, Owen Fraven, obviously. Peyton Sanford, yes, of course. Josh Dix,
even though he really struggled on Friday night. And then who's the other two? A point guard,
is it Brock Harding or is it Drew Thelwell?
And Drew Thelwell was the guy.
Two monster three-pointers.
This offense is clicking when he is in there.
And as we've talked about, it was a conversation after game number two. I think for Anne McCaffrey, though, he laid it out absolutely perfectly.
Drew Thelwell just didn't look real comfortable going through summer workouts,
going through the different things that they do.
He just wasn't real comfortable in the way that Iowa sets up offensively.
You go from an offense that is a ton of cents, 100, 200, 300 plays.
You're running set offenses.
You're going through that and going into Fran McCaffrey's motion offense.
And he expects a lot out of his point guards.
He puts a lot on the point guards' plates.
expects a lot out of his point guards.
He puts a lot on the point guard's plates.
You have to be able to get guys moving, get them in the right spot,
push the ball, get it up there, and get this offense generating.
He asks a lot out of his point guard.
And regardless if it was six years of Jordan Bohannon,
or if it was McCaffrey, or if it was what we've seen here recently,
you can go back to Mike Cassell.
The point guard has to do a lot.
And Thelwell finally looks to be very comfortable in what Freya McCaffrey wants at that position.
There's no doubt he's an upgrade on the defensive end of the floor.
And though you look at the metrics from his career at Moorhead State,
Drew Thelwell was not an elite level guy at the defensive end of the floor,
but he was a good, solid defender. He was at least a guy at the defensive end of the floor, but he was a good, solid defender.
He was at least a plus defender on that end of the floor, something that is not the case with Brock Harding.
Brock Harding will make the flashy play. Brock Harding will throw the alley-oop.
Brock Harding will get a ton of assists. He's knocking down shots, that's good to see, but he's never going to be a volume offensive guy.
He's got to find a way to continue to improve getting into the lane because he is
quick off the ball, but getting to the rim, he's not going to be able to finish against many guys.
He's not big enough. He's not strong enough. He doesn't have the leaping ability to get up there
and be able to go up against a 6'11 guy and finish. It's just not going to happen.
Drew Thelwell, 6'3". He's thick. He's solid. He has the athleticism that he can do those kind of things.
The defensive end of the floor, though, I think is going to be a huge impact.
And then who's that fourth guy?
We've said it even before we played a game.
Sadio Traore needs to continue to play more.
I maintain that is their best starting lineup and their best five is with Freeman at the
five, Traore playing the four, Sanford,
Dix, and then Thelwa.
And that's the closing group that we saw out there as they pull off the victory and score
what, the final 10 points of the game to get the win by 10.
That group has a different dimension athletically than what Iowa normally has.
Josh Dix is a good athlete.
Thelwa, good athlete.
Traore, good athlete.
Freeman, good athlete. Now, Pey good athlete. Freeman, good athlete.
Now, Peyton Sanford, not so much.
But still, you have four good athletes out there.
And on the defensive end of the floor,
they won this game with defense.
In a night where you don't shoot it very well,
the shots were, what, 41% from the floor.
25 of 60 from the floor.
8 of 25 from behind the arc.
Didn't even shoot free throws well,
which is really weird.
18 of 27 from the charity strike. You're out-re rebounded. That remains a concern. And when we talk about
Sadio Traore, and I think we're excited about this guy, just looks like a guy that they can
mold into an incredible talent. The one question that you have with a guy like him though, is
just this, what's he going to be able to do on the boards as a power forward? And what is he going
to be able to do on the defensive end? Those are two things that we just don't know. Athletically,
certainly. In terms of offense, no doubt. I think that's the best offensive group. But defensively,
can he be enough? And depending on the matchup, now there's going to be a lot of teams in the
Big Ten with some big, powerful power forwards. Can he compete on that end? He is not exactly the
thickest guy. He's got more of that lean type of frame and he's not six, seven that he's listed at.
He's six, six, six, five and a half, depending on people that have stood next to him. And that
would know I'm too short. I can't tell the difference between six, five and a half and
six, seven. That's a side. Um, that's still the question with him, but an exciting one.
This is not, I don't think a great Washington
State team by any means they're going to be playing in the WCC this year in fact Washington State
they got another matchup tonight yeah they take on Northern Colorado keep an eye on that one
maybe is going to tell us a little bit more a win's a win though and you're not going to apologize
for it wasn't pretty hey how about the environment too in Moline? That was great to see. First time they
played there since the 90s against Western Illinois. They played a regular season game.
Also played a game way back in the day in the mid-90s against DePaul in the NIT. I just remember
watching on TV just how great that environment was for that one. Shout out to those Quad City people
getting it done and showing up in a big-time way, supporting Owen Freeman and Brock Harding
on top of it. That was really good to see.
So Iowa with another bye game coming up this week.
It'll be Tuesday as they'll take on Ryder,
and then Friday night, again, another neutral court game.
This will be against Utah State.
Utah State team is really good.
Been a really good team here recently.
New faces there, but that's going to be a tough matchup for them
coming up in Kansas City.
That will be also on BTN on Friday night.
And then the schedule, one more bye game before the Big Ten play starts
against Northwestern and then a road game against Michigan,
followed up by the monster matchup against Iowa State
as the top 10 Cyclones will be coming to town on December 12th.
So a lot of excitement there.
Hey, getting the win.
Not a pretty game.
Not Iowa's best effort by any means.
First time, though, they played a quote-unquote real opponent,
and they get the job done, and that is most important.
Speaking of getting the job done, the Iowa women did just the same.
We'll talk about them a little bit, their victory against Drake
and this new-look Iowa women's basketball team.
What is it going to look like going forward here throughout the course of the
season? We continue locked on Hawkeyes.

Back with you one final time on the LockedOnHawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making LockedOnHawkeyes your
first listen every day. All right, let's get into the women's side of things as they continue their undefeated start to the season.
An 86-73 win against the Drake Bulldogs.
Got down early in this one, Katie Denebier,
who we talked about last spring.
When we do Kaitlyn Clark, she made the decision,
what, about a month before the end of the season,
she announced that she was not going to be coming back
for her fifth year of eligibility.
While that happened, a name that I brought up was Katie Dennebeer, who's been an outstanding player over at Waukee, called a bunch of her games in high school.
Just a tremendous talent and so much fun to watch.
And wondering, hey, Iowa's got some NIL funds.
They spend pretty well in the transfer portal as it pertains to women.
And maybe this would be one that makes sense.
Iowa girl now instead didn't happen. Denebier did not enter the transfer portal and they got Lucy
Olsen, which is a pretty good prize in its own right. But Denebier was outstanding. She finishes
with 40 points, five assists in the game. Ultimately, though, Iowa pulls it out a big second
quarter. And that proved really to be the difference of the game
as Iowa was able to keep them at arm's reach
throughout the back half of that one.
How about selling out the NAP Center?
And I'll tell you, it was not old Bulldog fans.
It was you Hawkeye fans showing up in a big-time way.
Now, back when we had it right here in our state
and the Big Four, Iowa State, you and I and Drake
would play home and homes against each other each year
on the men's side, and I miss that immensely. Just Drake would play home and homes against each other each year on the
men's side, and I miss that immensely just as a basketball fan and a fan of basketball in our
state. That aside, though, they still do it on the women's side, and they do it right. I absolutely
love these matchups. I think it gives you an opportunity to learn a little bit about yourself.
A road victory is always good for the resume, and these programs are not at a point where a loss
would be a huge detriment.
It's not going to keep you out of the NCAA tournament
if you do happen to lose to a Drake or a UNI
for Iowa women's basketball.
Didn't matter here as they get it done.
We got to continue to shout out Addy O'Grady
and talked about this at the beginning portion
of the season when she had that nine for nine performance
against Vaught Tech.
Kaitlin and her, it's not that they didn't get along, because that's not fair.
But they're just certain players that you play with.
And it doesn't matter the sport.
But any team sport, for whatever reason, things just don't click.
And after the post players that Kaitlyn Clark played with early in her career,
obviously Monica Zanano at the top of that last list.
Addie O'Grady wasn't there.
And developmentally, a lot of times centers take a lot longer to develop.
I mean, go back and watch Meg Augusta's early in her career compared to what she turned
into her junior and senior seasons.
I mean, it's night and day.
And that happens with post players.
And you're seeing that from O'Grady.
And I think not having maybe the pressure of playing with Caitlyn.
Caitlyn expects a lot.
And you got to be wired a certain way to play with a player like that.
And they just were never able to find that connection.
Now she's finding it.
She's finding her voice.
She's finding her confidence.
And you see that confidence in big time way.
She goes for a double-double, 27-10 in the game.
Lucy Olsen continues to do her thing.
Just a general out there.
She's tough.
She's dynamic.
She can get to the rim.
That three-point shooting needs to be a little bit better, one of five from behind the arc,
but overall, a really good one.
How about Taylor McCabe?
Now coming off the bench in this new role with the lineup.
A folder back in there now.
She plays 30 minutes in the game.
High watermark for her.
Coming off the bench, still played 29 minutes.
Knocks down all three of her three-pointers.
They need that.
Right now, this is not a great three-point shooting team.
As we talked about Lucy Olsen, that is not one of her strengths.
I think Feuerbach will find it,
but she's been streaky throughout the course of her career.
Stolke has shown now
that she can step out
and maybe take a couple,
maybe knock a couple of down,
but it's not a big part of her game.
A full tour, I think,
is going to get there
coming off the injury.
They need McCabe, though,
and she was able to provide that.
Mullaney, the freshman,
she's a stud.
And it looks like right now
this rotation's pretty solid
with seven that they feel real confident
against a high-level opponent.
Stremlow, she'll play a little bit more
throughout the course of the season.
We'll see more from her.
Ava Hyde in just two minutes
as she works her way back, and we'll see.
When O'Grady's playing like that, though,
there's no need to take her off the floor.
It's going to be a fun team.
Is it going to be what it's been the last couple of seasons?
No.
Is this a team that's going to contend for a Final Four national championship?
No.
But can they get to a Sweet 16?
Absolutely.
Could they get to an Elite Eight?
Maybe with the right draw and a break in the bracket.
That absolutely can happen.
They're going to be in the top half of the Big Ten.
They're going to be pushing for that top five.
I don't think there's any doubt about that.
It's going to be a good, solid Iowa women's basketball team. And finally, Jan Jensen.
Watching the postgame, watching her, the emotion that came over her, going back to where she played
in her playing career, where things got going at the Division I level with her and Lisa Bluter,
it meant a lot. Jan Jensen wears her
heart on her sleeve. She's a great person. She's incredibly easy to root for. We got a good one.
And more than anything, yes, we want Iowa to win because we're Hawkeye fans. But when you see
somebody like that, when you see what the University of Iowa means, what women's basketball
means, just all these different components that you get from GM Jensen, you hope this goes
incredibly well.
Recruiting, we'll talk about this a little bit later in the week.
Madden Greenway will not be a Hawkeye.
Might not be the blow that some people are making it out to be.
We'll talk about that here a little bit later on.
But Iowa gets the win.
They continue their undefeated start to the season. And now they get ready for their next matchup is coming up now.
They will take on Kansas coming up in the middle of the week on Wednesday,
a undefeated Kansas team that should be pretty good in the big 12 and should be
a good matchup at Carver.
Let's see that one.
We know it's a sellout.
We'll see how banked out it'll be on Wednesday night.
