Starting point is 00:00:01 Hope you packed a winter coat and a roadmap Hawkeye fans because the Big Ten just handed Iowa a brutal road slayed. Trips to Ann Arbor, Champaign, West Lafayette, and L.A., yeah, this thing is loaded. We break down the toughest stretch and where Iowa has to steal wins this season. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Locked-on Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. We got a little baseball talk as the regular season comes to a close coming up this weekend, Iowa, with a short road trip over to Des Moines to finish off the regular season against Purdue. We'll talk about that matchup.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Elliot Clough is going to join us as well from hawkeye insider.com. We'll get his perspective on the latest of all things Iowa basketball and football. Get his thoughts on the Big Ten schedule that was released. and we'll talk some football, including the linebacker spot and what they're going to do in the middle. But we begin the day with the conversation on the Iowa basketball team has found out what their schedule is going to look like in the Big Ten coming up this season, the opponents that they're going to have. So this is handed out by the Big Ten. And as has become a custom for Iowa, they have the double play again this season against Nebraska. This has been a budding rivalry.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Of course, we had the great Sweet 16 game. better with the way Iowa played late in that one pulling off the victory and punching their ticket into the elite eight. And this has been something that has been happening now throughout the years as Iowa has faced off two times against the Cornhuskers. There are other double plays. And because of the Big Ten slate, the 20 conference games, that means that you play three teams two times throughout the course of the year. And then everybody else, you get them once. It will be also along with the two matchups against Nebraska. It'll be home and homes as well against Wisconsin and against Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Both those teams are anticipated right now on paper to be NCAA. Tournament teams, John Rosteen and his top 45 of the offseason has Wisconsin coming in at number 32, has Ohio State at number 23, and the aforementioned Cornhuskers at number 28. By the way, in those rankings, Rastin also has the Hawkeyes at number 35. But really, when you break this thing down, and you look at it, the home slate, not overly daunting. I mean, you go through and you look at the matchups and the teams outside of those. three teams that we just talked about that will be coming into Carver coming up this season. It is a home slate in the Big Ten that you feel pretty good about. The headline matchups will be outside of the three we just talked about.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Indiana coming to town, you got DeVries coming in. That'll be certainly a storyline. Anytime Tom Isso brings a team into Carver, there's always a little bit of extra juice when that happens. Michigan State will be making their way also to Carver this season. The other teams coming in for these single plays this year, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, Penn State and Washington. And out of that group on paper right now, Oregon, who went out and spent in the portal this year, that would be the team.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Maybe that is the most difficult on paper out of that next tier of teams. It feels like a really good chance for Iowa to have a good, strong home record this year. The question is, where are victories going to come from on the road? We know Nebraska is a tough place to play. Obviously, Wisconsin has been a house of horrors throughout the years. Ohio State may be winnable, but they got a pretty good team, even minus Bruce Thornton this year. But here are the other games coming up that Iowa has to go on the road this season. There are two that you categorize in the sign. These are winnable. That's at Rutgers and at
Starting point is 00:03:43 Northwestern this season. But the rest of them, holy cow. They got the L.A. trip this year. They'll go to USC and UCLA. They'll play those two games together. It'll be one road trip. It'll be an extended road trip when they go out there to L.A. to face off against the Trojans and the Bruins. Both of those teams, by the way, are anticipated to be pretty good this year. Rastin has USC at number 14 in his offseason rankings and UCLA, the 22nd ranked team in the country. Other road trips coming up for Iowa this year include Illinois in the final four beat Iowa in the elite 80 year ago. Michigan. Iowa almost had them again two games this year.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Iowa nearly upending the national champion, one in football with Indiana and of course basketball with Michigan. Oh, by the way, you got to go to West Lafayette. You got many good memories here over the past, I don't know, four decades of my life. Not many great memories going to West Lafayette for Iowa basketball. You look through that slate, that is going to be incredibly daunting and difficult. Now, you could argue that getting both Illinois and Michigan single plays and having them be on the road is a good thing. Because the likelihood of beating both those teams, even in Carver is going to be a tall, tall task coming up this season. I guess you could go that way, but certainly a daunting one here for Iowa and what they're going to have.
Starting point is 00:05:02 A couple of their notes as well as we talked about last week. The schedule is starting to shape up. Saw a by game against Eastern Illinois. That one was on the slate. Saw that reported by, and I can't remember apologies. Somebody had that up on Twitter. The home and home will continue. The road game this year was Xavier, who we saw coming to Carver early last season.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Iowa State. That will be a home game this year at Carver Hawkeye Arena. and then the game in the Casey Center in Des Moines against Creighton. That'll be coming up this season. Still some tweaks out there. There's talking potentially maybe Alabama, home and home or even two neutral court games, one closer to Alabama, one closer to Iowa. That could be potentially on the table for them.
Starting point is 00:05:43 We'll see on that front, as Ben McCullum has said, that he's working, something that he mentioned to us over at the Polk County I Club last week, still working on getting another Power 5 game to throw into the mix coming up this season. Iowa doesn't look like they're going to be in an exempt tournament this year. And there is an additional game that you can play of this season. Also goes from 31 games was the max in the past that you can play during the course of the regular season. That has expanded to 32, likely just another buy game for Iowa. It'll be interesting too to see now Ben McCullum.
Starting point is 00:06:15 A lot of the contracts when he got the job a year ago and a lot of those buy games were already set in place. And a lot of those contracts had already been signed. How much more flexibility he has and what he is. going to do in the non-conference scheduling with the buy games. Doesn't make sense to bring in more fringe top 200 teams or are you taking on the drags? And as we know, if you take on even the bottom tier of college basketball, the way that the net ratings are set up, if you beat those teams by 35, 40, 50 points, that's good for your
Starting point is 00:06:45 net ranking because it's not the old system of the RPI, which was just a scheduled-based way that they analyzed things and what that spit out. now today with the net rankings, your efficiency numbers play in very big. And if you play those bad teams and you throttle them, that is going to help you on that front. So we'll keep an eye on that one. And we got you covered here, obviously, as we find out more and more what the non-conference schedule is going to look like for Iowa coming up here in just a little bit. As we continue here, lockdown Hawkeyes. We get into the conversation with Elliott Clough.
Starting point is 00:07:17 We'll get his perspective on what is happening with the Iowa Hawkeyes. We'll get his thoughts on that as we continue. stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Elliot Clough from Hawkeye Insider.com. He joins us as we talk all things Hawkeyes. Time to talk to some Hawkeyes.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Elliot Cluff joining us once again from Hawkeye Insider.com. part of the 24-7 network. As always, Elliot, appreciate your time. What is happening on the east side of the state? Not a whole lot, you guys. Kind of a dark and dreary day over here. But yeah, regular off-season day where I'm writing about recruiting and then going to do some prep network stuff today.
Starting point is 00:09:19 So keeping busy in this off-season. Absolutely, the off-season. And we're always looking for those little opportunities, those little nuggets. We got eye clubs going on. So you get some different things that start to pop from that point and trying to piece things together. But we did have a news item today. I know you guys at 24-7 had it yesterday.
Starting point is 00:09:38 And that is the Big Ten schedule for Iowa coming up this season, double plays against Nebraska, which has become a yearly occurrence along with Ohio State and Wisconsin this year. Start right there with the double plays. Do you like that every year? It seems like Iowa gets Nebraska twice and then they figure out the other two. I do. I think that's one of those things. where if you've got a rivalry, you know, use it as much as possible.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Like it's one of those reasons why I'm very pro Iowa, Iowa State football continuing. I think like that's one of the best things about sports, especially college sports, is seeing those rivalry games as much as possible. I mean, for us folks that cover them, it's one of those that's just a little bit more exciting. It's much more easily accessible than some of the other out-of-state games in terms of travel for folks like us. So, and now, I mean, with both these programs just ascending, having met in the Sweet 16 and Iowa beating them twice in Ben McComb's first year, Poyberg's starting to figure some
Starting point is 00:10:40 things out there in Lincoln. This is one that, yes, I'm very pro-rivalry, and I think having this one be in both places is really positive. Absolutely. It's something that just fits. It makes sense. I love how the regular season is also concluded with that game every year. The way that's been set up, it was a little wonky this year as the two teams, of course,
Starting point is 00:11:03 played in the NCAA tournament, but then on top of it, what you also had with those two teams facing off during the latter stages of the conference play. Still pretty good. Ohio State will see Wisconsin loses Blackwell. They lose Boyd from the back court, but I think a minimum, you think the Badgers are going to be solid every single year. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Greg Gard does a great. job up there in Madison. I know they've had their frustrations from time to time. He was a guy that actually lived in Madison during the pandemic. I don't know if I told either of you
Starting point is 00:11:35 this, but I was working at the State Journal there. And I think it was around that time, was his first year and they wanted him gone then. And boy, he made some folks regret that, even though, you know, they've had a few early exits in the NCAA tournament. He's a good basketball coach. Seems like a good guy to interact with in terms of what we've been able to asking questions in the media stuff like that when they've been in Carver. So yeah, Wisconsin
Starting point is 00:12:00 just kind of continues to figure it out. They find some gems like Blackwell before he opted to leave for NBA or Duke depending on what he decides to do. But yeah, that's a good program up there in Wisconsin. Let's
Starting point is 00:12:16 dive a little bit deeper into the schedule. The home plays, I think the headlighters, he got Darren DeVries coming back to the state of Iowa with his Indiana team, Michigan State, as we know you're in a year out there, going to be there and going to be very solid under Izzo. But outside of that, a very winnable home slate for Iowa this year. You go through and you look at the opponents, I think overall you're thinking, at minimum, this should be a team that can win seven games at Carver and Big Ten play and maybe even attain for something like a nine
Starting point is 00:12:43 in one mark. I don't think is a stretch by any means of what is in front of them. Got to protect Hope Florida. I think that shot is going to be there for Iowa and Carver this year. Definitely. I mean, Indiana really got a pretty good portal hall again with the amount of money that they have. But again, it's about making that team greater than the sum of its parts, right? Like, they had some really talented players this last year, and Iowa still went in and beat them. And just another indication that they made the right decision and getting Ben McCollum over DeVries. But it'll be interesting to see how DeVries really put that team together. And if instead of just throwing money into a problem, they're able to make something.
Starting point is 00:13:22 of that of that squad Michigan State's going to be tough when and however McCollum and Iowa is able to beat them at some point in time that'll be I have a feeling that'll be a bit of a relief because it'll be matching I mean Michigan State like what is those done with that program obviously is amongst best he's amongst the best coaches in the country been a bit at that program for a while and for McCollum to get a win over a team like that would be would be really positive for his his early being the head coach at Iowa. So if they could even pull it off next year, man, that'd be sensational. And, you know, having a big, like the Kiever come in, and Coleman's development will be big. And if they end up still in another spot on this roster, we'll see how that goes.
Starting point is 00:14:07 But, yeah, I mean, it's, other than Indiana and Michigan State, I mean, at least in the strictly home games, not necessarily the home and away. And you'd be disappointed if they lost to any of Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, Penn State, or Washington, at least in my opinion. Absolutely. Then we go to the other way, and it's the road schedule. Not only are they road games, I mean, you look at these opponents that they're going to have outside of Northwestern and Rutgers, and there's still road games, which is no sure thing. The L.A. trip this year is they'll go back out there to UCLA and USC.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Both those teams anticipated that they're going to be pretty good. Again, this season we saw UCLA, both of them, Bart Torvick, his preseason projections have them as top 30 teams. Then you throw in Michigan, the defending national champion, Illinois, a lot of people have as a preseason top five team this season. Of course, Purdue, you're in and year out. That road slate, trying to find some victories in there, that becomes much more difficult. Yeah, yeah. You look at that away schedule in the way, you know, Sean typed it up, and Illinois and Michigan are the first two on there, and you just kind of go, ooh, you'd like to think that this team will be a little bit more physically
Starting point is 00:15:19 prepared for both of those teams this year. Like I mentioned, with McKeever on the roster, and you return Kim Maniow. But what does your star power look like? Are you able to have a guy that you can lean on like you could with Bennett third? I mean, that's
Starting point is 00:15:35 quite the act. So that'll be difficult with both of those games. And then obviously going on the road at Purdue, man, I've been to West Lafayette for a game. I think Fran's second to last year in man, that place is, that's the loudest basketball arena I've ever been in.
Starting point is 00:15:53 Other than maybe, other than maybe Caitlin in when she broke the all-time scoring record in Carver, I was there for when they played Ohio State in that game. That was, that was nuts. But as far as a game that I've covered outside of Carver, that was something. But, yeah, I mean, like you said, Northwestern Rutgers, those are games you should win, at least on its space. But going out to L.A. is never easy just in terms of, you know, bodies and everybody's staying healthy. And both of those teams tend to be at least pretty damn talented, if anything else. You also over at Hawkeye Insider, you listen to the podcast with Gary Dolphin sitting down with Andrew McKeever,
Starting point is 00:16:36 the new 7-foot-3 transfer coming in from St. Mary's. Give us a couple of highlights that jumped out there after you listened to what Dolph had to say with the newest Hawkeye. Yeah, you know, one thing that Andrew said is exactly what McCollum said this, this offseason, in terms of, you know, the needs for their size. I guess it was right after that, that Aliae lost to Illinois, where it's like, you know, we just need some sides. And the Kieber was like, I see that. Like, I feel like I can be their missing piece. And for him to say that outright, I think, is showing up his confidence. but also just how much McCullen was able to sell that to him.
Starting point is 00:17:17 The fact that Ben wanted a big second pass, and McKeever knows that he's good at that too. And, you know, I would say that sort of thing. And then McKeever coming over from a West Coast conference at St. Mary, that's very different. It's a different type of basketball. It's a different type of opponent. So Gary asked him about the Big Ten conference
Starting point is 00:17:40 and playing at this level. And McKeever is ready for, ready for the challenge, believes in the staff and their ability to prepare him for playing in the big 10. So those would probably get a two things that stood out the most. Were you able to listen to that at all, Trent, that interview? I have not yet. No, I got it in the, it's queued up in the podcast and my Spotify, but I haven't got to that one yet.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Well, I texted David and Sean as I was listening to it. McKeever sounds like he's an enormous human. being. Like it sounds like one of those FBI informants where they have their voices in an interview. It's like the deepest voice to ever hear in your life. So that's another thing that stood out. How about it? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Yeah, we get the booming voice and I do not have that problem. That is for sure. Ben McCullum, the contract extension that was announced last week and now we get some more details of it goes up about a million dollars a year. An extra year has been tacked on to the back end of it through 2032. Anything jump out to you when you look through the Ben McCullum contract extension? Yeah, you know, I saw a few people, whether it was on our border or on Twitter or what have you, you know, maybe a little upset or going, maybe a little surprised about the buyout,
Starting point is 00:18:58 being however much it was. And honestly, like, after the coaching job that Ben McCollum put together this year, I'm not looking at any of the numbers at all. Like this is what he accomplished after a near 40 year drought with the players on this roster. Most of them, the crucial ones from Drake or recruited at Drake, like a stage stage. I mean, and what they did with Alvaro Fulgaris and him hitting those shots, obviously, he decided to move on to Louisville. But there's basically nothing in that contract that could make me say it's a bad contract.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Just with what he's accomplished, what he can continue to do as to get more players. like I can Ethan Harris, like a Jaden Coon in this last class, both composite four stars for us at 24-7 scores. Like, I just don't see this being a net negative outcome. When you look back to this contract, I just think getting upset over a contract right after ending a 40-year drought of going to the elite eight is just probably the dumbest thing possible, in my opinion. I, you know, I try to default positive just generally in my life.
Starting point is 00:20:08 and this is one of those scenarios where it's like, the last thing I'm going to get upset about or try to over-analyze is an extension for a guy who made history in his first year with a bunch of mid-major guys on his roster who are playing in a big 10 schedule for the first time, pulled off an upset of the reigning national champions who probably 95 times out of 100 games of playing against Florida, they lose that game.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Like just what they accomplished in year one, there is almost nothing that could make me say anything negative about that contract. So I just think it's great that you lock him up for an extended amount of time. This is not a Kansas State elite turnaround Jerome Tang thing, as much as Iowa State fans want it to be. That's just not the case. So I just said, oh, contract got extended.
Starting point is 00:20:57 That's awesome. Move forward. Good for Iowa. What to jump over to some football with you. And this is the time of year you guys are really starting to dive into Hawkeye Football Recruiting. 10 commitments so far for the class of 2007 as we always feel old
Starting point is 00:21:11 when we talk about that next recruiting class coming up for next season. Elliot, when you go through here, this team does not have a whole lot of seniors. Any idea numbers-wise, what they're shooting for in this class knowing they're probably going to go back to the portal again next December
Starting point is 00:21:26 are going to be looking through and fill in some holes that way. Any kind of range you're anticipating at the high school recruiting level, how many guys are looking for for that class? Yeah, so this class is 20th. Evan, Sean posted on our board within the last week or so that he was expecting like 20-ish for this class, which was a bit of a surprise to me, especially like you mentioned with the amount of seniors just not really on this roster.
Starting point is 00:21:51 So I'm not entirely sure where, you know, they decide to land. I'm really personally, I really like the start of this class. I think that Brandon, or excuse me, Braden Tensey, Banyaz is in line for a rating bump as a three-star quarterback. I really like Kyler Van Monen out of Pele. I mean, I like all three of the linebackers. He, Raylan Bingham, Gavin's Decker, all in-state linebackers for the second time since that 2024 class. But, yeah, that would surprise me if it ended up being that much.
Starting point is 00:22:23 I'm not saying I doubt Sean and the information he's getting because Sean's one of the best, if not the best, in the business. So, yeah, I mean, if it ends up being that amount, man, kudos to Sean. but I would probably say, if I had to guess myself prior to Sean posting that, I'd probably say like 15 to 18 maybe. They're definitely, they still need to add some pieces on offense. Still need to add a DB or two defensively. Yeah, I would say 15 to 18 in my opinion,
Starting point is 00:22:55 but Sean reported otherwise, so I'm rolling with my teammate. Absolutely. And yeah, that number 20 does seem a little bit high, no running back, something they're still searching for as well. as they kind of skipped a class with the depth that they already have there at that position. What do you look at the 10 commitments? Jack's Dijin probably for most of the casuals out there. He is the headliner because, well, the last name, Dijin, obviously Cooper's little brother.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Him as a prospect, then if you take him out of the boat, who else would be the headliner out of this class? Yeah, I'm going to be partial to the Dijins, of course. That's an OABCIG graduate myself. Jack's is just like he's got the tools and he's six three and a half two hundred and thirty pounds. So I think he's that the physical tools in terms of being able to play tight end at side end you. Like I think he's set up to have some success. Played receiver and DB for the falcons is really, really got great ball skills, just a natural athlete with the ability to just break off a route like that. So big fan of him.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And what was the second part of the question? If you took Dijin out of the mix, who else is a guy that you're excited about, I guess, out of the nine remaining commitments? Yeah, I like Jake T. a lot out of Fenwick, Oak Park, Illinois, the Chicago area. Kind of where Sean from, actually. Feast is one of those safeties that you can get excited about in terms of its versatility. He's going to probably be able. He's a guy that could play cash in the future, guy that could play either safety position. Of course, Phil likes to bring in DVs that could play all five, but Tees really strikes me as a safety that will be rangy, maybe not sideline to sideline, but rangy and able to come down and help and run support, a guy that can really hit.
Starting point is 00:24:46 He plays both sides of the ball for Fenwick, which, of course, is something that Phil likes in his recruits that, you know, they can see the field a little bit differently. But, yeah, Tees is probably one of my favorites. I mentioned Stecker. I mentioned Bingham. I mentioned Van Monen. I think those guys are basically interchangeable at all three of the linebacker spots, believe it or not. I'd probably see Bingham being more of a will, whereas Van Monen and Stecker could play all three. But I think Van Monen to steal getting him. And I'm shocked Iowa State didn't offer, you know, Illinois didn't offer, Wisconsin didn't offer. I really think it's a whiff by those programs. And yeah, they'll probably have to wait because that's just the way it is at Iowa with
Starting point is 00:25:33 their linebackers and their development. But I think all three of those guys have a shot to be really, really good. Decker's a kid that just racked up tackles. Bingham is a really fluid athlete that was actually recruited by the last Iowa State staff to play safety. And Ben Monin is just, I saw him play last year. They played Marion. You see the dude, it's like, how does that guy at the time, didn't have a single division one offer? I texted a few people in the industry or I guess a few coaches after seeing him and just been like, you've got to get this guy. What are we doing here?
Starting point is 00:26:07 So, yeah, I'm a big fan of all three of the linebackers. Final thing for you, we talked so much during spring and after spring about defensive line and specifically defensive tackle. The guys behind them, I thought it was going to be pretty simple. Jane Montgomery, he was going to be the middle linebacker because of the experience. And then they'll figure out the other spot over at the wind. between Buffington, Reese, Weisskoff, even Van Kekrits, who comes back after doing such a good job on special teams throughout the years. And now after spring, is Camp Buffington the AirParent at middle linebacker?
Starting point is 00:26:40 And does that mean Jade Montgomery bumps outside to the will? Yeah, that's the way it sounds right now. Is Buffington probably going to play the mic where, whereas Montgomery moved out to the will, which like you said, I had the same predisposition. I had the same guess that Montgomery would just stay at the mic. Buffington. I actually thought Bancu Kierich would play the Will this year. And then Buffington might slide in
Starting point is 00:27:03 to play the Leo or maybe even takeover from Montgomery at the Mike and Montgomery moves to the Leo. Something like that. They typically prefer a bigger, longer body, more fluid guy at that will spot. So pretty interesting. I have heard really positive
Starting point is 00:27:19 things about the pairing of Buffington and Montgomery at that Mike and Will spot, actually, believe it or not. So that'll be really interesting. And then it sounds like there's going to be three guys competing for the Leo between Van Kikorik's, Weisk, and then Reese, who missed basically all of the spring. So right now it's sounding like it's going to be between Weiskoff and Van Kikikikov.
Starting point is 00:27:46 He's getting, you know, Weiskoff is nipping at his heels right now. So it could be either one of them to end up playing that Leo spot. I mean, it's just, you know, the longer we, we, we, see these 2024 linebackers in, you know, in the rotation, in this position group, I think the harder and harder it gets for Seth Wallace to keep them off the field. So it's going to be interesting to see how all that plays out. One thing I've continued to say and that I think I'm going to keep on saying is that other than Zach Lutmer, Cam Buffington might be the best player on this defense by the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:28:23 So that's the guy that I've got my eye on face time going into the fall. We'll file that one away. Elliott Clough, hawkeye insider.com, joining us. Some injuries certainly have derailed things, but this team can swing it.
Starting point is 00:31:39 Here comes a Purdue team to town to Des Moines this weekend that has played incredibly well. Maybe the surprise of the Big Ten. Yes, UCLA wrapped up the regular season title with still two series remaining at the number one team in the country for a long time this season.
