Well, we had a big upset in the world of Hawkeye Athletics last night as the soccer team pulled an upset.
We'll explain that.
Hawkeye Elvis has announced his retirement and Tom Kakert from Hawkeye Report is going to join us.
We'll get Tom's latest thoughts of what he saw last week with Media Day with the Open Kids practice and some updates on the injury.
Speaking of injuries, I want to start today's conversation.
at the running back position because injuries are becoming a bigger part of the conversation.
And as you'll hear a little bit later from Tom Kaker, as he will tell us that both Kamari
Bolton and Terrell Washington Jr. are not back on the practice field at this point in time.
And it goes hand in hand with what we saw a season ago where a lot of people thought,
Iowa was going to be stacked up at the running back spot.
And for many people, Caleb Johnson was outside the picture that made me.
he had created too much of a hurdle for him to overcome,
as was first reported here on lockdown hockey as a year ago.
He was suspended for the first half of the game a season ago.
And he wondered, was he going to be able to get out of the doghouse?
Because we've seen this happen plenty of times in the past, right?
Guys that are in the doghouse and are never able to work themselves out of it.
Caleb Johnson was.
And, you know, it's interesting.
Kirk talked a little bit about Caleb back in, I think it was back in the spring.
But regardless, here are semi-recent.
recently. And he talked about him during August camp and what they saw from him and taking not
just the incredible skill set. And we talked about that dude and what we saw his freshman season,
the crazy game against Nevada with the lightning delays that ended after 1 a.m.
And what we saw late in that game in the breakaway building. We saw that at times during his
freshman campaign. And then as a sophomore, as he was dealing with injuries, it just didn't happen.
And I was got a lot of guys, a lot of different players that they can go to, a lot of different players
that can be impactful for them this season at the running back spot.
And that's what you get into, Kamari Molten.
You get into T.J. Washington, what they're going to look like.
As LaShawn Williams learned a year ago, dealing with the injuries that he had,
both in preseason camp and then as the season went on, it just didn't happen.
He made the decision that he was going to sit out the rest of the last season,
and he was going to move on, and he was going to transfer in and get his opportunities elsewhere.
So you look at this group.
And if it is something that is more debilitating, more molten, no, hamstrings are fickle.
And the wrong tweak, the wrong pull, it can put you out.
Feels like you're on the right track.
You're getting close.
Another pull.
You're back out another six, eight weeks.
Crazier things have happened.
And Terrell Washington, Jr., we've talked a lot about him.
Still, we haven't seen it really in game action.
He's played a little bit, but we haven't seen a ton out of him.
As we've talked about a ton, when you have somebody like Jazzy on Patterson,
Patterson is just your solid, dependable veteran.
Maybe not the upside of some of the other guys.
But the other three players in this running back room are so incredibly intriguing.
We've talked a lot about Nathan McNeil, the true freshman running back out of Florida.
We had offers from Arkansas State and Rhode Island.
Like those were his finalists along with Iowa of his duties.
Not very often you hear a Big Ten program, certainly a program like Iowa,
swimming in those kind of waters.
Yet he arrived early.
He was talked about during the spring.
He's been talked about here during camp.
He has something different.
And with running backs, it's not just what you're doing in the way room.
It's not just what you can see.
There's something almost innate.
And certainly in the zone blocking scheme that Iowa employs,
the patience, the understanding, the setting up of blocks,
all those things that Caleb Johnson had, John Green had,
these top level, Akram Wadley had, top-level running backs,
it is just different for them.
and McNeil, whatever that is, it's unmeasurable, he seems to have that.
And then he also throw into the mix of the two redshirt guys.
Redshirt freshman this season sat out last year in the redshirt year.
Xavier Williams, a banger.
Biggest running back out of this group.
He adds a skill set in that physicality that he plays with that Iowa really doesn't have.
Jazian Patterson has that a little bit, but that's not Moulton's game.
That's not Washington's game.
And at this point, I don't think it's McNeil's game either.
Xavier Williams brings that physical.
old school goal line type of a halfback,
he might be that kind of player.
And then finally, Brevin Dahl.
And with Dahl, you have a guy that has elite speed.
You saw it just in the couple of plays last Saturday,
that that speed, it is real for him.
And a real possibility that Brevin Dahl can be a guy that can find it.
The Iowa running back room is deep.
That's great.
But as we know, running backs in Iowa can sometimes be a scary thing.
And as we go back to 21 years ago in 2004,
when an airbag was born,
definitely want to stay away from that this season.
Mention Tom Kekert, Hawkeyeer Report.com.
He's going to join us some injury updates from Tom.
Also what he saw in his big takeaways.
And a question on left tackle,
is it locked up?
Does Trevor Locke, have a lock on the left tackle position?
We'll talk about that all coming up here with Tom Kekert from hawkeyeorport.com.
This is Lockdown Hawkeyes.

Tom so much has happened
in seven days since we spoke
you had media day
you had kids open practice
we had the Big Ten network in town
on Monday night
so lots to get to
it seems like it's kind of old news
in some respects but I guess let's just go back
and get a thought or two from you
is what you heard at me today, what you saw in practice,
or then watching Big Ten Network on Monday as the crew was in town.
What stuck with you, Tom?
Yeah, I think the top line item for Iowa fans is Mark Grinowski's probably a little rusty,
but from what I've been told, he's getting better every day and, you know, getting more comfortable.
And I think, you know what I wonder about him is if he's one of those guys that just doesn't practice.
all the time, but we put him out there and the adrenaline gets going a little bit.
And on game day, I'm just not, I know some fans were kind of worried about him the other day,
but I'm not. I think he's going to be good. And the big thing that they're excited about with him
is that he can make some plays with his legs and his feet and get those, those third and threes
get a lot easier when you've got a guy that can run the ball like he can. So, yeah, I just
I didn't, I came away kind of confirming what I thought about this team and some of the
players, you know, Carson Shire was really good at the. Yeah, he's one of those dudes. He was,
yeah. He was the guy. He's the guy that I kind of planted my flag on this, this winner and
said that he's going to be, you know, an all big tennis kind of guy this year if he stays
healthy. And I'm standing on firm ground with that one. I, I really like what.
what he's doing they've just liked him forever but it's just been never been healthy and um so i'm
excited to see what he can do um and jaden harrel's been doing a nice job too i think everybody is
kind of just looking past him but um you know from what south wallace said he's been doing
really well so um yeah i like the defense um like what i've seen from the office set
Anderson, another guy that's been hurt, but he looks really good.
I know he and Reese Vandersi have gotten a really good connection along with
Addisno Stringa with Grinowski.
So those might be three guys to end up being one, two, three, and receiving for Iowa this
year.
Yeah, Jake Butt brought up a stringer string.
Yes.
I know you're surprised by that.
I was because it just kind of felt like Saturday.
They weren't really thrown to the tight ends.
It was all kind of wide receiver work and some screen work and the tight ends weren't
involved.
and then we get to Monday, and here comes the tight ends again.
And that's, I think, a good thing, certainly, for Iowa,
because I like both him and Orpworth and certainly the future
with guys like Thomas Meyer and Company.
One question remains.
Oh, go ahead, Tom.
Go ahead.
One thing with the tight ends is,
Grinowski really likes one of the tight ends.
Remember his tight end at South Dakota State with Tucker Kraft,
who's done really well at Green Bay.
So that offense was really tight-end, I wouldn't say friendly,
but they used the tight end a lot.
So it's something that Grinowski's,
really comfortable with from what I've been told.
The big question still remaining is left tackle on the offensive side of the ball.
It was, I know they're still rotating through, and it's Jack Dostler, but is it at the point now where I would be surprised if Trevor Lough, the sophomore, isn't the guy that gets the first crack at the starting gig?
yeah he was the guy that going back to december when i you know i think in january i put out like
oh here's my guess at a depth chart or whatever i had him at left tackle based on what i was told
during bull prep that they anticipated that that lout was going to be the guy and then they bring
price george in and you're like oh okay and then dothflers on the top of the depth chart and you're
like okay maybe it's not as done as it seemed to be but i think of i i always thought eventually they
get back to lout and they end up with him as the left tackle and and i think that's where
they're going to end up is with him being the guy there and and he's got the size he moves really
well he's got really good feet um he's really comfortable playing you know looking down the road
to next year lighton jones will probably be next to him and and those two are really good friends
and and uh really comfortable playing next to each other so um i think that's that's that's your
answer at left tackle is probably
drivel out. Well, speaking of
looking ahead to next year, Trent and I both kind of
feel that the quarterbacks are
our next year's quarterback will be on the
roster at this point this year.
Has Heklinsky maybe surprised
them a little bit? Obviously, they thought there was something
there. They wouldn't have, you know, given them the
opportunity. He's
six foot, right? He's like, right at
six foot, and Hank Brown's got a few inches
on him. If he's six foot, I'm 5-11.
Is that one of those deals? Okay.
And you guys know, I'm not 5-11.
not really okay would that would does that maybe tip the scales in hank brown's favor at least for
this year because at klinsky i think might have surprised some people just maybe how good he was
or he's um yeah he's got um he's got a little drew tate in him you know that works a little bit
of he got a little bit of feistiness to him uh he called himself a gunslinger and i said oh okay
he goes put it in a good way you know
not a risk taker, but a gunslinger who will slinging around.
But he's, yeah, he's got something to him.
But I tell you, Hank Brown's been great this camp.
They're just raving about how good he's been.
And I think they're going to come out of this camp feeling really.
They feel like they've got three guys that they could go with if they needed to and feel really good about them.
So I think that's, that's a huge positive for them because two of those guys will be
back. So that means that more than likely, unless they get spooked by something or something
comes out of the blue that's just too good to be true, they'll get off that Hampshire wheel
of being in that portal looking for a quarterback, which, you know, some other schools are
bright in the bullet this year. You look at Ohio State and Alabama and Georgia, they didn't go
jumping into the portal to try to find the flavor of the month. They just decided that they
were going to go with their guys and see how that go.
and because it's just such a it's such an expense it really is to go in the portal and get a
seasoned quarterback and get the value in it um you know if you want to Ohio State won a national
title doing it but um I think everybody's kind of trying to get off that hamster wheel now
and if you look towards next season he can fill in and you're not having to fill in that
whole a quarterback we know granowski cost a pretty penny to bring him in this year if you're
able to spend another area suddenly you know a question maybe you have it a right tap
with Jennings Dunker moving on.
That gets a little bit easier to fill when you have a little bit money there.
But that's looking past the season.
And Tom, we certainly don't want to do that.
I do have one more question.
And boy, after the onslaught of info, we got Friday, Saturday, Monday.
Things felt like they have dried up this week.
I've tried to make a couple of calls.
Nothing.
A lot of crickets feels like they're really locking down over there.
The question that also remains for me is what's going to happen at cash?
You know, talking to Cohen entering her out in Vegas, I thought it was incredible.
He mentioned to me, when I asked him the question about cash and kind of his flavor spin on it,
he mentioned every guy that has played the position.
I thought that was incredible.
I mentioned the five guys before him.
But you look at him, you look at what they potentially can do in that defensive backfield.
Is it going to be entering there at cash, or do you think that him and Lutner are still kind of fighting over that spot?
I think it's, from what I was told yesterday, is that they were still battling it out and still trying to make a decision.
And you could see them, like, one week, Lutmer's at cash.
The next week, it might be Entringer at cash.
They just feel like they're really comfortable.
Here's what I think, though.
I think they want to keep Entringer on the field at all times, if that makes sense.
And that means maybe he's the strong and maybe Lutmer ends up being the cash because of that instead of having to, you know, like they did the last couple of years,
they'd flip Castro back to Strong Safety and Xavier Wampa would come off the field when
they were in when they were in traditional 4-3.
So I think maybe they're going to end up with Lutmer and at Cash and then Intringer at Strong.
But that's just because I know Phil wants to keep entering around the field.
And by the way, Wampas had a really good camp, I understand, really good.
He just seems much more comfortable.
at at the free yeah yeah good tom i i want to see him succeed i mean the expectations were they
over the i don't think they were unfair as i said we said last week i don't think they were unfair
because we all saw them to play trance saw i'm a bunch and everybody in the state of i was saw
i'm a bunch okay so free um our strong rather and cash and then left tackle what else is
still up for grabs tom that you've been able to glean probably corner um
I haven't gotten much news on T.J. Hall and his bone bruise and that. So Phil's been pretty, you know, Phil doesn't generally, when he's singing phrases, they're usually earned. And I know everybody has that Deshaun Lee play against Reese Vander's. He burned into their heads and thinking about that highlight video. But Phil said Deshaun's had a really good camp and he's really pleased with them. And I think Jay,
and Watson's come along, but I'm really curious what happens at corner because I think that's
kind of the key to the season, too, is if they get good play a cornerback, then the defense,
because I think the front seven's going to be pretty solid.
But Jonah Pace seems like he's won the B-tackle starting job, but he's going to play a lot
with Bryce Hoffman's going to play a lot, too.
So keep an eye on him.
He's a, I don't Kelvin.
And Kelvin was like, he's too good to be true, I think, was the quote he used about Bryce Hawthorne.
So just, I think that's a solid place.
I think up front is really solid.
I mean, here's one of the guys to watch for the future now.
He probably won't play a whole lot this year.
But Joseph Anderson, holy cow, that kid, young kid, he's like go-go gadget with the long arms and everything.
And he's just disruptive.
And he's up to 240 pounds.
And you say, wow, that's pretty light.
And it is, but he was like 215 last year.
So is he an edge rusher or is he going to play in the middle of the line?
He's an edge rusher, good.
Edge guy and, boy, he's just arms and legs, and he's just disruptive and really interesting.
He's the guy that was most interesting to me out of that freshman class last year because you could see if he puts on the weight, boy, it's really fascinating to see what he can do.
He won the triple jump down in Missouri.
the triple jump for a defense event.
Yeah, that's a little athleticism out there.
I got one more on the football front.
Just a couple, maybe some quick hits, some injury things.
Anything more that you've heard?
You mentioned the middle of the line.
Jeremiah Pittman, it was mentioned, I think, on Dolph's podcast that he went through
surgery a while ago.
How close is he pitman coming back?
I think he's back next week as close to the plan.
So hopefully he can round into form fairly quick.
but, you know, they've,
Will Hubert is the guy that they,
that they've had kind of plugged in there behind Graves.
So Graves is going to play a lot of snaps this year,
and he's doing really well.
So, but they've got kind of,
once Pittman gets back,
maybe they could have a really, you know,
a solid four-man rotation there.
And on the running back front,
Camari Moulton dealing with a hamstring injury,
and we didn't get to see T.J. Washington last weekend.
Any update on either of those guys?
I, as a middle of the,
week. They still weren't practicing, so I know. You remember last year, Lishon Williams was
dinged up in camp, and he had gone into fall camp as the top guy in the depth chart, and
everybody was on the Camarie Moulton bandwagon, and then Caleb comes in there in the first
game in the second half and just tears the world apart, and the rest, as they say, is history.
and Lishon Williams was in the portal by the time we got to the first week in October.
So I'm not saying then Kamari and Washington Jr. are looking to the portal.
But at some point, you've got to just kind of go with who's there and who's performing really well.
And that's been Xavier Williams and Nathan McNeil.
Tom, I want to go to one of the questions that you posed on your board this week.
he called it the Mount Rushmore
offensive line and I'm sure that
popped in your mind after Sheriff announced
that he's going to retire
how do you limit it to just four
because somebody's
somebody's not going to make it right I've seen a bunch
that don't have Marshall Yanda
how he only played two years
there I guess that has to be the separator
right I mean I seldom see
Balaga's name he was unbelievable
obviously Gary and
Linda Baum and
and Tristan Worf's and
And did I say gallery?
Steinbach?
Steinbach?
I mean, there's so many.
Yeah, there's so many guys that you could put in there.
I mean, I think Gallery Shurf and Linderbom are automatic because they won national awards.
But after that fourth guy, how do you leave Tristan Warsaw?
How do you?
Exactly.
Yeah, and Yanda is just different.
But I guess it's the two-year thing.
Yonda might make it just for just for the block against Iowa State.
Sean Parker, just, oh, my God.
Oh, boy.
That was unbelievable.
I wasn't sure he was going to get up.
I'm not kidding you.
I wasn't sure he was going to get up.
He probably could fly for that today, wouldn't he?
Oh, for sure.
Absolutely.
I mean, without a doubt from every official.
Yes.
They're flying in from all corners of the field if that was in today's game.
But, man, what a question and what an impossible answer.
There is no right answer.
There is no right.
Yeah, somebody said you and I need to put five faces on there.
And then maybe you can get it better.
Bigger mountain.
Yes.
Find a bigger mount to put that one on.
A little basketball to wrap things up with you, Tom, as things have gone quiet,
obviously football season getting closer, basketball gets pushed back until we get into it.
There was a name that popped up, though, earlier in the week in the transfer market.
Ali Dibba, who played a couple of different places in his career.
Southern Illinois, what Albulin Christian, 6-5, guard can get to the rim,
decent shooter, not great from the three point line.
I was sniffing around any hope at all, or what have you heard on Allie Dibba, if I have the
name correct?
It doesn't seem like there's, it seems like he might be headed to DePaul who might have
roster and some, some money to spend left.
So, um, uh, by the way, they're, they're, um, Paul's GM for their program is,
uh, former Iowa assistant, LaValle Jordan.
Really?
It's kind of wild.
Yeah.
Yeah, he, yeah, so I ran into him at a couple of events,
uh, spring and, and summer and it's like, oh, hey, Val, how are you doing?
You know, and, uh, he's like, yeah, they, they even let the GMs go on the road.
It's wild, you know, crazy.
You had a podcast with a guy that, uh, in, in our industry that sadly didn't work out for him.
Hopefully you'll get another opportunity.
Todd Bromacamp, I want to promote that.
Hope a lot of people will listen to that.
Todd's a good dude.
Mm-hmm.
Todd is the best.
And Todd and I,
Todd and I worked together for probably,
I don't know,
it wasn't 10 years,
but it was probably eight years.
At the magazine?
Yeah,
with Voice of the Hawkeyes
because we were partners
starting to know three
with Voice of the Hawkeyes magazine
over at Rivals
with Hawkeye Report
and Voice of the Hawkeyes
for I think
seven or eight years before
Voice of the Hawkeyes took off.
But yeah,
Todd's a great friend
and we'll probably do some more podcasts.
together because we
have similar sensibilities
and I want to keep Todd's name out there
and land something pretty good
you know just
he's writing for he's doing a
sub stack too so you can find that
and he's he's
um and this is
no disrespect to anybody else on the beat
when he wants
he's one of the most talented writers I've ever
been around absolutely one of the best
most talented writers I mean
he is gifted
and I say that with all due respect to all the great writers on the Iowa beat.
And there's some good ones.
There's some good ones, no doubt.
Tom,
Tom, thanks for doing this, as always.
Appreciate it.
And we will talk to you in a week's time.
Thank you, Tom Kekert.
Okay.
Thanks, guys.
Yep, see you, buddy.
Tom Kakert, hot guy, report.com.
Thanks to Tom Kaker for joining us, as always, and some great insight there.
And also, Todd Bromelcamp, yeah, good guy.
I've known him for a very long time and same sense of
We'll try to get Todd on here on our pot as well
and hopefully hear from him here in the coming weeks.
We continue lockdown Hawkeyes.

For the first time since 2021, Arkansas loses a home in women's soccer as the Iowa women's soccer team
goes on the road and pulls off the massive upset.
A year ago, we saw Iowa advance to the round of 16, making it further than they
ever have ever had before.
This is a program certainly that feels like they're ascending.
And then going on the road and getting a win.
like that, where they dominated for long, long stretches, very eye-opening and a great start
to the Hawkeye season here for the 2025-26 athletic calendar.
What a start that is.
Of course, we got field hockey, volleyball going on, and we get to football season,
and we'll have you covered.
Not a ton.
We're not going to dive deep.
I know that is definitely a niche sport, but definitely want to shout out the Hawkeye
student athletes and getting it done there.
One final note, and that is the retirement of Hawkeye Elvis.
If you don't know Hawkeye Elvis,
he is the guy that I'm sure you've seen on your television.
He's the guy that, yes,
where's the Elfus get up?
He's got the hair.
He's got the sequins.
He's got the jumpsuit.
And he's out there dancing Elvis like doing his thing.
But he is calling it quits.
Met Hawkeye Elvis a couple of different times.
Really an enjoyable character, a fun guy.
And when he's not, the Elvis guy, also a good dude, too.
and he moved to California a couple of years back.
I know that has something to do with it.
He lived in Minneapolis for a long time.
So though he'll still be a huge Hawkeye fan,
Hawkeye Elvis, as we know him, not going to be there anymore.
It was something fun.
It was something a little bit different and always enjoyed seeing him on the television,
seeing him at so many of the games that I was at throughout the time
and a guy that a lot of people really, really very enjoyable.
He was one of the good people out there.
and a great Hawkeye fan.
And that will continue throughout, certainly, the near future.
All right, shout out to Hawkeye Elvis,
and a big thank you to everybody out there for listening in.
Who's going to take over the throne now of Hawkeye Elvis?
Here's an opportunity.
I mentioned on my radio show earlier today.
Remember for that one game, we had Pope Hawkeye,
whatever that guy was?
I think it was a Halloween game,
maybe against Wisconsin a couple of years back.
He was on TV and didn't get much further than that.
Who has the next great eye?
idea. That's what I'm looking forward to. And maybe we'll be seeing you here in just a couple of
weeks at Kinnick Stadium. That's right. Next week will be our final week without football.
The week zero has a ton of intrigue with Iowa State in action against Kansas State to open up
the season. We'll be keeping a close eye on that. And then the week after it is going to be
game week. It is getting that time again. We got you covered every single day here on
Lockdown Hawkeyes. Your team every day hit that subscribe button watching us on YouTube.
have a great weekend. We'll talk to you again on Monday until then. Go Hawks.
