Iowa wide receivers have been an issue.
Who's ready to step up next season for the Hawkeyes
and what has to change now
if this passing game is going to take a real step forward in 2026.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes,

with stations in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and Sioux City.
glad to be aboard with you as we break things down and today wide receiver is something we're
going to be talking about something that hasn't been great for most of these 20 years today's
episode of lockdown hawkeyes is brought to you by game time download the game time app
create an account use code lockdown college for $20 off your first purchase we are going to
talk about those wide receivers who needs to step up who needs to step forward and what iwa needs
to do in the transfer portal if they're going to take any step forward this year at the
wide out spot. We're also going to talk some basketball with weight looking bill. He'll stop
by. We'll talk some Iowa hoops with him. Get a look at Iowa's eight. Get ready to wrap up the
non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday in Des Moines and then one more at Carver
before Big Ten play rebegins again with the final 18 games of the calendar. Plus we're going to talk
about one of the more head-scrashing decisions. Caden Weechin, not a first team all-American
befuddling at the very least. Let's start though. Speaking of Caden Weigin,
at the wide receiver position and he is one of the guys that'll be moving on after this season
at the wide receiver spot.
Now, coming into this year, there was a belief, myself included, that we were going to
see some growth out of the Iowa passing game this year, that the wide receivers, more
healthy going into it, they went to the portal again, they brought in a guy like Sam Phillips
that definitely has some speed coupled with the return of Seth Anderson and Jacob Gill
and Reese Vander Z that there was going to be really.
improvement this year. We also heard about Caden Weechin that there was going to be more work put into him,
not just being a returner, but using him in a myriad of different ways. And they certainly did that
this season more, but it wasn't at a high level. Iowa this year, I think the passing game can
be considered a disappointment because I thought there was going to be a step, a pretty significant
step. And at best, it was inches forward from what they were a year ago. And in fact, some
statistical measures, it was a step back.
regardless of that.
Here we are, and now Iowa goes into next season with the loss of many of those guys that
we just talked about.
Jacob Gill, his career comes to a close.
Seth Anderson, his career comes to a close.
We see Cade Weechin gone.
Sam Phillips, gone.
All these guys have exhausted their eligibility.
And what do you have returning for next season is Reese Vander Zee, who's been banged up his
first two years in campus.
We know when he's healthy that he can be an impact player.
He can be a guy that can go up with that six foot four frame and make some plays in the passing game.
You also bring back Dayton Howard.
You got a couple of huge plays this season, but just a couple.
Big frame again, six five guy.
You got those big size receivers on the outside you feel good about.
And then who's playing inside?
Who's the opposite?
Who's this speedster?
We heard a bunch about KJ Parker.
We saw him a little bit this year, but I think you got to get more on a KJ Parker.
There are real opportunities.
Another guy, Jared Bowie, I think all signs point to him, likely entering the transfer portal,
a weird loss season for him because of injury.
We'll see what it looks like going for Bowie if when we get to January 2nd, he is in the transfer portal.
But this is a wide receiver group that had at least a lot of names, guys that had successes,
other places, and it didn't translate like Phillips, like Seth Anderson.
Now, maybe that goes to show us that also, again, Iowa having to tap into the waters,
at the FCS level is not working.
I think he'd make that argument.
I would have liked to see more Sam Phillips.
I would like to see him more out there this season,
even with his diminutive frame.
I thought he was a playmaker.
But now when you have a group of receivers
that have gone through the system,
that certainly understand as we go into year number three
of the Tim Lester regime as the offensive coordinator,
that there's going to have to be something there.
But this is, of all the position groups,
this has to be at the top of the list of a place that they're going to have to go in the portal
and in order to get a guy that's going to be able to help out right away.
Look, they were able to get production out of Jacob Gill, a guy that was a very late addition.
People were not knocking down the doors to get Jacob Gill that had, what, 17 career catches in his three years in Northwestern
before he made his way to Iowa City.
You can get those guys.
You can get some decent FCS receivers.
But to get a top flight guy,
with what i was passing game has been now for the better part of seven eight years it's an
incredibly difficult cell and take off your black and glow blighters here take away the hawkeye
sunglasses and just think for a moment you're a kid in the portal you got a chance at a payday
but it's not just about that payday it's also looking towards your future and an opportunity
to put yourself in position to make it to the next level there's going to be a lot of other
programs out there. In fact, almost every
power four program is probably going to put you in a better
position than what you'll get at Iowa. Yes, you'll get
great training. Yes, you'll get coaching. But
when you look around, Iowa is going to have to
overspend up this position. Now, Terrence Smith is a guy that came
in a year ago, redshirted this season. A lot of people
have some hope about of him, out of him. You also look at the
award ceremony, something we'll talk about later this week. Apollo
Payne was a one of the, one of those.
of the guys that came up. He is a walk-on from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. Good size,
6-3-210 pounds. Is that someone to put away? But folks, if we're going to see Iowa really improve
at the wide receiver position, it can't be hopeful that a red shirt freshman next year in
Terrence Smith is a guy that just leaps onto the scene. That Apollo Payne becomes the next great
walk-on story. You need difference makers. In order to do that, you're going to have to spend.
Is Iowa willing to do that when you look at the roster construction?
When you look at roster management, I'm not so sure.
I know they tried.
No, they were incredibly close a couple of years ago.
Two years ago when Iowa was heavily involved in the portal, brought in a ton of guys,
Cade McNamara, the headliner out of that group,
they were to the finish line of bringing in from Alabama, Trashon Holden.
Now, it didn't happen.
A lot of people speculate that maybe there was some conversations with Dick Sabin and Kirk
Barents about him and his background.
When he got to Oregon, Holden, he was arrested with a felony arrest.
He was reinstated after that as he was cleared of all charges, but that was talent.
And Iowa felt like they had a chance in that they were going to get him.
He went to Oregon.
He finishes his Oregon career with 70 catches, 11 touchdowns over two years, over 1100 yards receiving in his two seasons.
I like that.
And here's the other part.
You talk about Holden and maybe a background that is questionable or some concerns.
that might be what Iowa has to do.
I know Iowa's not a place where you can cut corners,
but you're going to have to take on some guys,
potentially if you're going to change this wide receiver group,
they're going to take guys that probably have a little extra baggage.
Do that.
That is a question for Kirk Ferrensen company if they're going to go that route.
Need more talent.
Simple as that.
If we're going to take that step forward,
regardless who the quarterback is,
regardless of what the offensive line looks like in the running game next year,
and all the things that we'll talk about,
wide receiver, you just have.
to be more talented.
We continue here,
Locked on Hawkeyes.
We go from some football talking.
We'll get back into the football
a little bit later on,
talking about just the head scratching decision.
Caden Weegean,
not a first team,
All-American from one of the publications.
We will talk about that.
But next, time to talk some Iowa basketball.
Who needs to step up?
Iowa has two games left in the non-conference.
Who needs to take a step forward?
We'll talk to former Hawkeye basketball player,
wait-looking bill.
That's next.
This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Let's get Wade looking building here.
Of course, Iowa plays downtown Des Moines this Saturday.
If you want to see the Hawks in person, don't want to drive over to eastern Iowa,
No excuses now.
Right downtown Des Moines, Casey said it's a 5 o'clock tip.
Bucknell in Iowa, former Hawk Wade Looking Bill joins us as we talk about what we've seen so far
and what we expect to see once we, or maybe hope to see, once we get to a Big Ten play,
which promises to be, well, as tough as it always is.
Hello, Wade Looking Bill.
How are you?
Really good.
How are you guys?
Doing okay.
Doing okay.
Want to have you on just kind of, you know, what you've seen so far and what we expect to see.
By the way, this Michigan's story that's being written so far in college basketball, yikes.
I'm glad I will only see them once because I don't know.
They're the best team in the country.
They are, aren't they?
They are embarrassing teams that are potential sweet 16 lead eight types of teams.
Yeah, they are really good.
You know, Trent and I watched Gonzaga in that tournament came back the next day.
I thought, oh, my God, these are eggs are really good.
They're a contender again.
And then Michigan beat up by, yes.
I mean, they're just bludgeoning schools.
They did struggle at, was it at Penn State?
I think they kind of struggled.
So, you know, but on a neutral court, who's playing, who's better right now?
You know, once you get to tournament, again, neutral court, who's better than Michigan right now?
Yeah, nobody.
Was it Maryland maybe they struggled with?
For a half.
Yeah.
Maybe Maryland.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then pulled away and went by 18.
Yeah.
On the road.
Yeah.
In a conference game.
They're not, they're at another level than even.
as good as Arizona is playing right now
and some of the other teams at the top,
they are definitely separating themselves.
The good news for Iowa.
Oh, go ahead.
Yeah, I was just going to say,
I think part of that,
and what you see now with these transfer heavy team,
I think Michigan has adapted quicker and better than Kentucky.
Or say, you watched Illinois Saturday afternoon to get out of Wisconsin.
We can talk about that.
You know, Illinois's got five, maybe six guys that are going to get drafted.
but they just they don't have any flow you know now Nebraska's got some transfers
they got the mass kid back but I think when you look at Michigan they have embraced that
that transfer whether it's Morris Johnson or um what I can never pronounce his name
Yaxel um Londonberg you know the the athletes per for Michigan but um big forward
they played really well and they've meshed together quicker than everybody else now I'm not
saying that, you know, Illinois is not going to get there or whoever.
Kentucky is, I think, still a mess.
But I think what you're seeing now in college basketball is just teams are going to be so
much better in March than they are in November because they're all new players.
They've got five new starters, four new starters.
It is just, it is craziness.
Good news for Iowa.
Don't have to see them until March 5th.
Perfect.
Second last game of the year and we'll see.
And I'll get them once.
Yes, it only get them once.
Absolutely.
Double plays are going to be important.
We've talked about this Iowa schedule in the Big Ten.
Important, I think, to get off to a good start when they open it up after these two non-conference games, Bucknell Saturday, in Des Moines, and then the home game against UMass Lowell before it gets started again with Big Ten play.
Wait as they finish up these last couple of games.
They're on conference.
They're going to win by a ton.
What are you still looking to see?
What is maybe some of the questions you want to see answered here in these final two non-con games?
Yeah, you know, so we went to Carver Sunday.
Our daughter's on the dance team and we have everything going on.
and they were performing.
So Cleveland over there Sunday actually talked with Mike Mahon.
You mentioned Mike before.
That guy's everywhere, by the way.
He really is.
You know, it's something, this is what, and I'm glad we're talking.
I'm much more excited to talk today than two weeks ago after that Michigan State game
because, you know, they bumped Maryland who's got, they got some dudes now,
and they're going to get really good, really fast.
Battle against Iowa State.
But what worries me about Iowa is that when you look at the men's basketball team,
They are a little bit like Iowa football in that what I'm saying is that that margin for error is really small.
You know, when Iowa football is down 12 points going in the fourth quarter, that's tough for them to overcome.
And I think with Iowa, when they don't have everything clicking, you know, when they're not making free throws, don't turn it over,
Ben Esterps has got to get 18 to 22 every game.
And if they lose one of those battles, let's say, or they're down, you know, 12 with six minutes to go,
it's really tough for them to offensively to score quick, to get turnovers, to generate quick offense.
And that's going to be tough when they're playing at Minnesota, when they're playing at Wisconsin,
they need to make a little run.
Secondary scoring?
Is that where you're going?
Somebody other than Sturts has to find consistency?
Is that what you want to see?
It's just, you know, when you look at statistics,
you know, it's just, it is really strange that their leading rebounder, Cam Maniow,
maniow, who I really like, he's averaging four rebounds a game, 4.4 rebounds a game.
It is just really, when you look at their sense, I know everything is really skewed
because they played some really bad teams and they played some, some good teams,
but you know, Maryland's probably not a good team.
I think they're getting better. Michigan State's a really good team.
Iowa State's a really good team.
But everybody else has been just kind of so-so.
But, you know, when you rely on Sturped has got to get, I think that number is 20 to 23 points a game.
If you only get 16, then they got to kind of rally kind of they did at Iowa State and just get points by committee.
You know, Tate State's just coming in, does some things.
Isaiah Howard, when they were out in California, had that big game in the final little mini tournament.
Yep, absolutely.
They've got some pieces is just, do they have enough?
We continue with the curious case of Brendan Hassan,
who knocks down four three-pointers against Western Michigan.
Minutes, are they going to continue to build for Hassan?
Do you think that he is going to carve out a niche?
We see him a couple of times, not even play in games.
Is there a role for him on this year's team when they get into the heart of Big Ten play?
Yeah, you know, it's something where, you know, coach is really loyal.
Coach is really loyal, which I appreciate.
And, you know, when you look at a guy like kale combs, you know,
plays hard i think he has a place in there but this iowa team needs some more offense now can
kail combs provide that i think so but but brenda hossin is a unique weapon you know when he comes
off the bench people have to close out on him they cannot give him any uncontested looks and even with
that he doesn't necessarily have to take that shot or to make that shot that opens up more flow
in the inside pass and cuts going to the baskets
you know, maybe you get a mismatch with sturt on the inside because that big's got to come out
and close on him.
But I trust Coach McCollum, and wherever he wants to play guys, you know, this system is really
unique in the way they play.
So I'm just going to kind of defer to him.
If Hassan gets minutes, that's wonderful.
But if he doesn't, I totally understand why.
Because Ben McCollum knows his team, obviously better than anybody else.
Is it lost on you how much defense this team is playing
as opposed to previous years at Carver Hawkeye?
There seemed to be committed to the defensive end of the floor, Wade.
We went to the game Sunday and just had our popcorn
and our Carver cone just kind of sat back and just watched the game.
And they was literally 85 to 45.
Now that's not a very good team,
but Wayne Stevens knows basketball.
And Jeff Rudder, you and I, Ohio State, Assistant,
coaches and assist them with Western Michigan, and they got players in the state of Michigan.
And I know just transfers and this and that, but that teams won five or six games this
year. And I would just lock them up and they couldn't do anything. I love it. I think it's
something where that's how Iowa State played. That's how Purdue plays. You have to be good
defensively. And for whatever reason, you know, previous coaches, even the coach I played for,
Tom Davis, we did not stress defense very often.
And I think that old saying defense travels, whether it's football or basketball.
And when you go on the road, say it's at Wisconsin, say it's in the barn in Minnesota,
and you can get two, three, four, five stops in a row.
That's going to help you get more wins.
Wait ahead a question for you.
We were talking about the Big 12 the other day.
And they've gone back after playing 20 conference games a year ago.
They went back to 18 this year.
It means a lot more single plays.
You don't get to see many teams twice anymore, and that's unfortunate, but we've heard about the grind.
We've seen the grind come tournament time, even come the middle of February, how tired these teams are playing these conference games, coupled with all the travel now in the Big Ten with the four West Coast schools that have added.
Would you be a proponent of seeing the Big Ten go back to 18 games, not nearly as many double plays, but just an opportunity to go out there, play every team once.
You'll have one double play throughout the course of the season.
but maybe more importantly, have your teams in their best shape come March.
Yeah, I think they have to do something.
I mean, if you look at Iowa schedule, I think they go to,
there's a Penn State on a Tuesday and come back.
And there's just some really weird travel days, you know, just I don't know.
I guess it's Penn State on a Saturday, but, you know,
at Maryland on a Wednesday, come back and play Purdue Saturday at noon.
And it's not going away.
You know, here's the thing.
That Big Ten Network, it is the golden goose.
I don't even know what the numbers are anymore.
You guys might know.
But is it $100 million each school gets from that TV revenue?
Or it is crazy.
So if they say, hey, I was going to play Maryland at 8 p.m.
Eastern Standard time on a Wednesday, I was going to be there.
You know, it's just something where I don't.
think it's good for the game, but we've become accustomed to money, whether it's the Iowa
lottery, how much money does that generate? We're not going to shut down the Iowa lottery.
Cut in that same context, they're not going to shut down the Big Ten network and stop all these
travel games, but, you know, it is a grind. I mean, it is a grind for these kids and to get
home and this and that, but again, everybody's getting paid now. So everybody's a pro, basically.
Nobody's feeling sorry for Iowa basketball players.
No, or anybody, no, you're right.
You know, when I look at this way kind of from what we've seen so far,
with the schedule when it came out, it was laid out in front of us,
yeah, Michigan State's probably going to be tough, right?
When you've got to go to East Lansing, yeah, Iowa State's probably going to be tough
to win that game.
Iowa State's got a really good team.
The game is in Hilton, and they both went against Iowa.
But other than that, I mean, they're nine and two,
and the two losses, it's not like nobody didn't,
We didn't see either of those coming.
So I got to think they're probably right where most thought that they would be at this point.
I think this is the best case scenario.
You know, there's going to be quite a few teams that get thumped in East Lansing.
And they played Iowa State.
They were right there.
You know, they got a $16 run starts in the second half.
I thought, here we go.
They don't lose by 20.
They battled back down the way.
I just think when you look at Iowa schedule,
you're talking about these two games, Bucknell and UMass Lowell,
They got UCLA at home at Illinois and...
At Minnesota.
I'm sorry.
At Minnesota and Illinois at home.
Okay?
Yep.
You know, it's just something, I think they have to get two of those games.
It's just, I just don't know, you know, at Purdue, at Indiana, it's just something where they're going to have to find a way to, you know, whether it's take care of the home court and beat Illinois or upset Michigan State, maybe at home.
I'm sorry, I'm not as you can say, but upset Michigan.
How about that in Nebraska twice?
You know, look, when the schedule came out, I thought, well, there's probably two wins.
Well, not anymore.
I mean, Price Stanford just, he looks like a first round draft.
And they got pieces in there, and they guard a little bit.
That's been the thing with Fred.
He hasn't really, you know, stress defense, but they locked down Illinois Saturday when they had to.
So I still think, again, I say to every week, 10 and 10, get in the tournament, and then who knows?
Who knows?
I think with Iowa style, it is so unique that they can win two games once, once, if, if once they get in the tournament.
Yep.
Mass has made a huge difference, him coming back.
And as you mentioned, Price-Sand, it really is.
Price-Sand, where do you have, 34, 32, something like that against Dillon-Noy.
Mass almost came to Iowa.
Mass almost came to Iowa.
Did he really?
When he was transferred, Iowa, Iowa had him on campus and they looked like it was going to be a done deal.
Him and Cricky.
Yeah. Yeah. Good stuff. Thank you, buddy. Appreciate this. Wade. We'll talk to you in
2006. Happy holidays. Merry Christmas to you and yours. We'll talk to you as the Big Ten play gets here. Thank you, buddy.
Thanks, guys. Appreciate it. Thank you.
Good. Wade looking, Bill. Former hockey joins us weekly.
Love talking with Wade and great information is always from him. And a really interesting
point I thought in something that really agree with him. There's going to be a certain style
that the Iowa basketball team, much like the football team,
a certain way that they're going to have to win,
certainly throughout this Hawkeye season.

With 48 teams for the first time ever, it's going to be huge.
Let's be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part.
That's why the game time app is clutch,
finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats.
With game time, you can track price drops in real time,
get alerts when great seats open, and buy tickets the moment.
They hit the app.
It puts the power back in your hands and makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible.
You can pull up the app and find so many different ways to see exactly where your seat views are going to be.
I use this for a couple of presents already.
Got the kids going to Carver Hawkeye Arena, taking my daughter to a women's game,
and my son to a men's game.
They're excited for it.
They will be when they open it up underneath the tree and game time made it possible.
Plus, my favorite part of the game time app,
The fees are up front.
You see exactly the price that you're going to pay.
No more last second surprises at checkout.
Take the guest work out of buying tickets, including World Cup tickets, with game time.
Every match, concert, and event, all with game time.
Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on college for $20 off.
Your first purchase.

Again, download the app, make an account, and use code locked on college for $20 off game time.
I'm trying kind of back with you one final time.
This is Lockdown Hawkeyes.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes,
your first listen of the day.
So as we get these press releases at this time,
and it is, this player's All-American,
this please, and all-conference,
this guy's been awarded by this and this and this.
One of the more surprising aspects was the announcement
from the AFCA, the Coaches Association.
And that,
Kate Weechan,
who put together a historic season,
four return touchdowns, one on a kickoff against Rutgers,
three others on the punt return game,
that he was not a first team All-American.
And these things matter because this is one of the awards that go out there
in what you're considered consensus All-Americans.
And you have to make three of the five lists,
and this is one of them.
The problem is this is a list that does not consider a punt returner
or a kick returner or just a returner in general.
They call this position under special teams all purpose.
So the first team honoree, KC. Concepion of Texas A&M, formerly of NC State,
well, he plays a lot of wide receiver.
He's got nine touchdowns receiving this year, also has a rushing touchdown this year.
He's used a whole lot more in the offense than Caden Weegean was this season.
And I have a feeling that is the reason that he snagged these honors.
Now, he himself had two punt return touchdowns this season.
Had a nice year.
Average 19 yards per return this season, not nearly as good as Weechan.
who's averaging, what, 25 a return, over 25, I think it was, three touchdowns.
And on top of it, Concepcion, it has a return kicks.
Echin does.
Obviously, as a returner, this should be one.
But it is just absolutely crazy that you can have something in order to get the great honor.
I'm not just being an All-American, but becoming a consensus All-American.
And for Iowa, to get your portrait hung up in the walls of poor Kinnick,
and you have different organizations that can't even vote
for the same position group, head scratching, but not surprising.
Unfortunately for us, this is one of the issues that in college football
just don't matter at the same level in the grand scheme of things.
Kane Weigin, though, tremendous year.
We'll find out, I believe Thursday or Friday this week,
we will get the last All-American list that will come out.
And with it, we'll find out of Kane Weegean will be a All-American
on the consensus side of things.
He's an All-American, certainly for us Hawkeye fans,
and you are all-American fans out there.
