As we come to you from the road, been ready and get excited to get back home. We got a lot coming up today, including some final thoughts. I will give you an update on where things stand in my career with the radio side of things. What we're doing here, Lockdown, Hawkeyes, and a few other avenues. Give you an update on that front if you're so interested here at the end of the podcast. We'll be joined by Tom Kekert from hawkeye report.com.

Starting point is 00:01:01 He was in Chicago for Big Ten Football Media's media days. We will break that down with Tom. But we started the top with a part of it that came out of media days and that the extension looks like it is going to happen with Iowa and Iowa State on the football field for another four seasons. The contract is set to expire at the end of the 2007 series. That means that this game scheduled this year, Precinnick Stadium, was the final game that was listed as a game on the schedule officially and then the return trip next year in 2027 to A. Well, an extension looks like it's going to be there. Jamie Pollard, the outgoing athletic director at Iowa State, along with Iowa's AD, Beth Gets, both pinned it around it for a while.

Starting point is 00:01:44 This is something that it felt like we were definitely getting close to this and coming to fruition, and that was definitely the case. But that aside, going to continue, and, you know, when I look at this and you think about it in a big picture view, in the state of Iowa, it's a great thing. From the business side of it, what it means, for your friends, your neighbors. We, I think for the most part, everybody, if you live in the state of Iowa, you deal with cyclone fans and vice versa. They deal with us. So it's something that has just become

Starting point is 00:02:13 definitely a part of what we're accustomed to and what we're used to. Good, better, and different, that's the reality. And when that week comes around, it's incredibly fun. But I think we've all had this thought as Hawkeye fans, right? What does it mean? What does Iowa have to gain out of this game outside of financial implications from the state of Iowa and the Sihawk Corn Series and things like that. What do we have to gain on the football field as Hawkeye fans? We've all thought it, and it's not an arrogance, but has there ever been a time that a win against Iowa State has pushed them to another stratosphere, either a better bowl game? Well, you know, it's not a playoff bid, but it's added anything to the overall resume outside of sometimes a really nice win.

Starting point is 00:02:59 but that's it. On the other side, what a loss is meant? And we go back to, well, one, that impacted the most, 2002. Now, I don't think even undefeated Iowa would have been able to nab a spot in the national championship game opposite number one, Miami, over Ohio State, even though Iowa was playing much better than the Buckeyes, had more impressive victories. And by the end of the season, if there was a Big Ten championship game in 2002, I think Iowa throttles the Buckeyes in that game. That's how well they were playing in late November. We know, though, that the layoff and what that did in the Bull game against USA, all that aside, let's get back to the point of hand. What does this game do for Iowa football outside of good for the state?

Starting point is 00:03:43 And I still don't know exactly what good for the state means. Good financially for some people in the state. Maybe that's a better way to phrase it. Good for some back and forth, some barbs, those kind of things. From the Iowa perspective. We don't know where this is all going in college athletics, and specifically at the Power 2 conference level with the SEC and the Big Ten. Is it going to turn into a mandate where you have to have a non-conference game against what are those other conferences? We're not there yet.

Starting point is 00:04:12 Could that be coming? We'll see. If that's the case, then Iowa State will likely go away. Does it mean that more games involving those teams are going to happen? That non-conference strength of schedule, conference strength of schedule, all these things are going to matter. in the grand scheme of things. It's what we don't know. And I guess what you know is a little bit better

Starting point is 00:04:34 than the unknown here. Because there's no guarantee. Look, we all have these pie in the sky ideas about what you're going to do also, that I was going to go out there and they're going to schedule a monster matchup against a Florida state. They're going to go out there

Starting point is 00:04:48 and they're going to get Georgia. They're going to get Texas to schedule a home and home. Well, the likelihood of that actually happening is pretty low. The more likely scenario is Iowa gets a home and home with South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech. Those are likely the kind of programs that you're looking at realistically that are going to do home and homes with Iowa. You know, when we talk about some of these and we have had these conversations on social media and message boards for the last 25 years, and while that's been happening, we're also saying, yes, that's great.

Starting point is 00:05:21 You can do that, but Iowa, okay, yeah, maybe a match up with a Georgia Tech, a home and home That'd be great. Get to travel from Atlanta for one of those games. All right, that could be a fun road trip coupled with. Well, we recruit down there. How many of these programs really recruit in the state of Iowa? If you're looking at from both sides of the equation, not a whole lot. And that's why finding another quality conference in today's realm could be a little bit more difficult than you think.

Starting point is 00:05:48 I know. After Hayden got things rolling, he scheduled Miami and Colorado when they were a power program, there were some big ones. And back before Hayden, they played some monster ones all the time. time in the non-conference, Oklahoma, USC, all kinds of these matchups. It was a different era of college football. Just look around and look around in the same kind of area as Iowa, and you don't see a whole lot.

Starting point is 00:06:12 I don't hate the Iowa State game. I enjoy it for the week. I hate some of the parts that come out of it, mostly the social media. Sometimes the people at the tailgates and those kind of things, too. Some of the people that take it a little bit too far, and that's on both sides. but overall, it's here with us. It looks like for another four years. So we got six more of these, at least on paper, on the contract ready to go.

Starting point is 00:09:41 your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Join one again by Tom Kaker from hawkeye report.com, fresh off a quick trip over to Chicago, and Kirk got to go early. Does he get sway? Does he get to pick anymore where Kurt Ferrets of the Iowa football program get to go? You figure by year 28, you at least have to have something

Starting point is 00:09:58 because they're going to put them on the road to begin big-time player every year, at least let them choose. when he gets to go for media days, right? Yeah, I think given that he has to go on the road for the opener and those first three games, they just let him come in early and get his stuff done and then hit the road. So yeah, Kirk was kind of loosey-goosey.

Starting point is 00:10:20 It was an interesting Kirk because usually at those events, he's pretty buttoned up and pretty careful with what he says. But he was, you know, just he's seen. seemed completely relaxed. And maybe it's year 28 that he's just kind of letting it fly a little bit. And so he was entertaining and interesting in his comments all day. We've gone through Kurt 2.0 and 3.0 and maybe there was a 4.0 in there. He does seem a little different here these last couple of years.

Starting point is 00:10:54 I mean, you get in a different aspect. But just me from afar watching and listening to the things, I think you also get that too, where he knows he's the elder statesman. He knows that what he says is going to get hot headlines, just being that longstanding. And it feels like he is not as guarded with his words as he once was. Yeah, I think he's more apt to let it go. Just let it fly and just say things that in the past,

Starting point is 00:11:20 I think he would have been guarded with. But I think given the way the NCAA treated him this past year, I think he's just like, well, I'm just going to let it go. Just, you know, say my piece, what are they going to do? Take more wins away, you know, what are they going to do? Punish me, you know, suspend me again. I think he's measured in what he says, but he's letting you in what he's really thinking much more than I think he did in the past. And being kind of less careful with how he phrases things too.

Starting point is 00:11:57 but being respectful while being very pointed, I think is maybe the way I would term it. One of the things that definitely came up that I found interesting, and he says he's an advocate of expanding this thing out. And in fact, at the beginning of the podcast, I don't know how it came up. Oh, I was talking about 2002 in the Seahawks series. It looks like it's going to be extended for another four years. Well, even that game, even that loss, as much and as better as Iowa was playing in 2002, than Ohio State. I still can't envision 12 and O Iowa getting selected over 12 and O Ohio State.

Starting point is 00:12:33 But that aside, the game didn't meet a whole lot. But going all the way back and talking about those kind of games and the way that the Sihawk game goes overall at Kirk Farrant's and a stature and just there's so many different parts of this overall that find interesting. But just a quick hit from you on the Sihawks series looking like it's continuing. You're also different. I'm in Central Iowa. It's a huge deal there compared to what it is in the Quad Cities where, yes, They're Cyclone fans, but it's not the same level. It's not the same level. But, you know, I kind of think the series has kind of lost some of its luster just over the years.

Starting point is 00:13:08 It just kind of, it seems kind of bland. And I'm more of the opinion of, hey, maybe we do it six years, but like the other four years, let's see both places, gut and maybe play some other people and see what that's like, too, just especially since the conference has gone to nine teams. You know, Iowa used to always have that other non-con game where they play a Pittsburgh or in Arizona or an Arizona State or somebody like that and Syracuse, just something that looked a little different instead of your generic, hey, we're going to play an FCS team.

Starting point is 00:13:47 We're going to play one of the MAC teams, Kent State or this year, NYU, and then we're going to play Iowa State. It's just, it's kind of boring. But I just like a little more variety. But I don't have a boat. So they're going to extend it. I think everybody extends it because they just don't want to kind of poke that bear of, boy, what a landmine that would be if Iowa and Iowa State agree that they weren't going to play anymore.

Starting point is 00:14:18 That would be, you know, something that was a hot topic for sure. And we'd probably get something legislatively from the state of Iowa that would say, hey, they have to play. You know, somebody's going to bring that up. So they're on to 31. And then we'll see what college football looks like then because it could be very different by then. Maybe we have, you know, the Big Ten and the SEC breaking away from NCAA football and just playing each other. And, you know, who knows what's going to happen in the next four, five, six years.

Starting point is 00:15:03 24 team playoff. Kirk said he was an advocate of that. Once it went from two up to four, he was just expand the whole thing out. And we know, and you guys over on three have definitely shown those numbers that Iowa would have benefited more than any other program in the country with an expansion to a 2014 playoff. I wonder if that also rang in Kirk's mind just a little bit. Well, I'm sure it did. And, you know, he's also following the company line, too, which is the Big Ten has been, and Tony Petitie has been the organization and the leader who has been pitching the 2014 playoff

Starting point is 00:15:39 the most. So it makes sense that Kirk would be in favor. He's, you know, he is going to tow the company line on that. But also, it's an opportunity to get into the playoff. And, you know, then some of those nine and three Iowa teams would be in the playoff. And, you know, that would be a feather in the cap. And, you know, I think there's some of those Iowa teams in the past few years that would have given some people some real difficulty in the college football playoff, too.

Starting point is 00:16:12 So, yeah, it makes sense that he would be in favor. Well, Tom, I want to get into a little bit more of the number. butts and bolts and actually talk about this year's football team. We can kind of more of those broader subjects that came up from media days, but I want to talk a couple of the players, couple of the names that came up. And as you and I both know with Kirk, a lot of times it's about reading between the lines.

Starting point is 00:16:35 He also had an opportunity to talk to the three guys over there. They usually give us a little insight as well. Tom, as we wrap things up and talking football, Chicago, a couple of things that definitely jumped out. and we were talking a little bit beforehand.

Starting point is 00:18:37 The offensive line spot is interesting to me because I know I brought it up to you, a couple of the other guys on the beat during spring football, and it goes back to that report when Kate Piper said he was going to come back for another year. Well, it came from a national guy, I think from CBS first, if memory serves, and that he was coming back and playing center.

Starting point is 00:18:58 Like, we're sure about that? Like, because it came, it didn't come from a local beat guy. Okay, I guess that makes. sense you're probably going to help out your market value move into center, but that's not an easy transition. We saw it with Logan Jones. He was not good, his first year at the center position. Capeeper is an elite guard.

Starting point is 00:19:18 He hasn't played center before, and it's not just about the physical elements. It's the mental part. And that goes with Logan Jones, some of those snaps that he had during his first campaign there as a starter. He just, he was not good, even though you can see the physical traits. And I remember that block against Michigan where he got a flag for blocking too hard on the guy, which was assinided in its owner up. You could see the physical tools, but it's more than just the physical part of that

Starting point is 00:19:39 center position. But he went through spring. I heard a couple of things, brought it up a couple of times that it's not done. And now here we are. We're getting ready for camp. We're starting things off in August and a day. And yes, it's not a done deal. Tell us about that offensive line and specifically PEPA center.

Starting point is 00:19:56 Yeah, Kirk kind of brought it up that it was, you know, that they've worked him there. And it could end up working that way. It's just, it's funny because all the preseason all American teams have Kate Piper as a starting center on it. And it's like, boy, have we really settled on that, I guess? Maybe we have. But, you know, Kill Winner is a guy that Kirk mentioned. And he's fresh off winning these soul and hay bale toss. So, you know, that is a ticket to start up there.

Starting point is 00:20:27 If you look at Dunker in the past and guys like that. So it's, you know, Pete won it. So it's, he's, you know, this is like the ticket to start him winning the the Heabail toss. So, but he worked at Center and they really liked him there. Now, does that mean he's going to stick there? I don't know. I think they really thought that Peeper was the guy that was, they're just going to transition him

Starting point is 00:20:56 over there and he'd be really good there. And he may end up being really good there if he ends up playing there. but winner is given them a thought and you remember here's the thing that that uh folks have to remember what is the mantra that kirk ferens always talks about best five will start you know that's his thing he mentioned they feel like they've got seven or eight guys probably eight guys that they feel good about right now but it's the best five will start and you put them in the best position that they have And maybe it might be that Kale Winter ends up being the center. And Peepe stays that right guard.

Starting point is 00:21:34 And you strengthen up that right side of the line a little bit more because you're going to have an All-American Guard for sure. You know, I think he's a, you know, a pretty solid choice to be an All-American Guard. Next to Jack Dotsler, who will be his first year as a starter. And next to Winner, so he can kind of help both those guys. And he got Leighton Jones and Trevor Lough on the other side. and those guys are going to be great together, I think. And maybe that is their best combination in that situation.

Starting point is 00:22:05 The other thing Kirk said is he doesn't want to use two centers because he thinks that that would harm the quarterback. So I thought that was interesting too that because they may play two quarterbacks doesn't mean you're going to play two centers. He wants to kind of settle on a center and go with them. So that I think is going to be one of the under, Under the radar stories for an O-Line nerd like me, yeah, I'm going to be all over that story. That's going to be probably, you know, my top three stories of the fall camp.

Starting point is 00:22:38 But everybody else would be talking quarterbacks and I'll be like, oh, is Kail Winter? Really the, you know, walking Northwest, by the way. My guy. My deck of the woods. Absolutely. Yeah. So, you know, he said, and I'll always remember about Kail Winter is his freshman year, I asked Dunker. because Dunker was always pretty good about giving me a little tidbits or whatever.

Starting point is 00:22:59 And I said, hey, who's a young guy that I should keep my eye on? And he said, Kail Winter. And I was like, really? And there was a pretty good offensive line class that came in with him. And he's like, I really like Kail Winter. I think Kail Winter's going to be really good. He's got to put on some weight. Dunker's a profit, man.

Starting point is 00:23:17 He knows. Look at that. Look at that. We might have a couple in Northwest guys with Phil Pot now and him. And I'll have a couple as the pipeline is continuing as the, I will tell you, the wolves, that is an athletic department over there. They got some money over there. And much like we saw with Ankeny in the split one, Centennial right away,

Starting point is 00:23:34 yeah, Northwest is off to a really, really strong start overall. And a couple of guys that are the first alums to come out of Northwest are a part of that, certainly on that front. So we go from offensive light. What other thing? You mentioned Kirk, he loves to talk about, you know, best five are going to do there. He also says he can't microwave it. And I almost feel like in a way, are they trying to microwave people,

Starting point is 00:23:55 being a center. And I go back to that, that Kirkism, if you will, go into that spot. Tom, it's your biggest question. It's my biggest question. I think it's everybody that follows and now covers Iowa football's biggest question. It's not quarterback. They can win without great quarterback play. They can win with bad quarterback play. We've seen that. It's defensive tackle. And I cannot remember, remember this team also a year ago, as we're talking about these concerns and all these new faces, specifically in the defensive line and a new middle linebacker, it looks like with Buffington taken over at that spot. is this team gave up over 200 yards rushing twice last year.

Starting point is 00:24:29 And nearly a third game that they gave up over 200 yards rushing. They weren't elite like we're used to. And now you're talking about a whole new group up front there. That's where my concern level is. Any insight, any names, any hope of what's going to happen up front with the defense. Hard to win when you don't stop the run with Phil's defense. And it's because you're always kind of behind the sticks then, and it's second in three or second in four instead of second in eight or second at nine and that

Starting point is 00:25:02 makes everything more difficult now they kind of bow up and you know it's like the the uh the the Oregon game they gave up over 200 but they stayed in the game because they could bow up in the red zone and make things more challenging but um it is just hard to win when you don't stop the run and other than Bryce Hawthorne, I mean, it's a big question mark. You've got Hubert who could play. You've got Gaffney. You've got Devin Kennedy. You've got some guys.

Starting point is 00:25:36 I thought it was interesting. Kirk wasn't like glowing about the defensive line. It is clearly his biggest question mark, I think, just in terms of what he's going to get. And he said basically, they're going to play a ton of guys. So you may see a rotation of, you know, five defensive tackles and five defensive ends this year, where some years it was like six guys,

Starting point is 00:26:03 three guys that kind of rotated. And I think it might be 10 guys that get a chance. So you may see, you know, Kenny Merriweather, Yosea Vanessa, Drew Campbell, you know, down on the list. the brown kid, Camari Brown, the kid from Elon, all those guys going through that cycling at at defensive end. And then you could see Devin Kennedy and some other guys at defensive tackle, trying to build some strength there and kind of trying to figure out which guys you really want to

Starting point is 00:26:43 go with. But he basically said, you know, there were three guys last year that played over 500 snaps. Aaron Graves, Max Lellen, and Ethan Hercott. He said that I don't think anybody's going to get the 500 snaps this year. So that just tells you that they're not going to, they're going to go through a lot of guys this year. Well, that's a good stuff. And Tom, we will talk to you next Friday and we will do it like we have for the last almost 20 years. We'll do it back on the radio again. How's that sound?
