Starting point is 00:01:18 Well, we are going to take a look back at the weekend that was in Hawkeye Hoops as Iowa gets the comeback victory in women's basketball, an important one against Indiana with what is in front of that performance that played very poorly for most of the first half, a great third quarter and a comeback win in that one. We'll also talk about the Iowa men as they fall at Carver Hawkeye Arena earlier today as they fall to Illinois in a game where got off to yet another slow start and something that is becoming a bit of a concern with this Iowa basketball team and the continued slow starts out of them. But we begin today where we've been the last week and that is in the transfer portal
Starting point is 00:01:59 with the Iowa football team as they nabbed three months. more out of the portal here over the last 24 hours. So if you missed it late Friday night into Saturday morning, I had to throw another podcast out there, gave you a bonus edition just because of what they were able to do in the transfer portal, bringing in a couple of their biggest targets, getting Tyler Brown the safety out of James Madison, along with Tony Diaz, a wide receiver from UT Rio Grande Valley.
Starting point is 00:02:25 These are two guys that Iowa identified right away. Many people believe that they were their top two realistic targets on their list. They went out there and got them. And we talked about that. You can go back into the archives and check that out. And now over the weekend, three more are added to the list for this Iowa football team. And it is more help at the skill positions of what makes this incredibly important. The headliner is they went to running back. And I know there are plenty of people that kind of wondered about this. He still have a running back room. Even after the departures, Jazian Peterson moving on, he'll finish up his career at Michigan State. We saw T.J. Washington.
Starting point is 00:03:02 in the portal as he has moved on. Still plenty of depth at that position. You have a returning starter and Kamari Moulton. We know at minimum is solid, right? We saw a very solid year out of him. And seemingly week in a week out, he was going to get you somewhere between 70 and 95 yards every single time out.
Starting point is 00:03:21 That's where you're going to get out of Kamari Moulton. You also return Xavier Williams in his redshirt freshman season this year. Definitely popped at times, had some good things. And a lot of people remember the drop that he had. in the end zone that turned into an interception against Vaynerbilt in the bowl game, but still really like what you saw out of Xavier Williams, that bigger, more physical type of back and good hands outside of that catch in him
Starting point is 00:03:45 and a guy that has a good upside. And then the true freshman that we got to see this year. And Nathan McNeil, him obviously, you saw a different kind of gear. He just glides a little bit different out there. It was very limited reps out of McNeil this season, but you bring those three guys back. we still have Brevin Dahl, who has elite level speed, who's been battling injury, his first couple of years on campus.
Starting point is 00:04:08 He still has three years of eligibility in front of him. He is still in that back field. They moved Dean over, one of their defensive back prospects, moved him over during the season and got good reports out of him. And then Braden Jackson's son, who came in as a walk on, and he's done some good things. And there's been a little bit of buzz out of him. So it's an incredibly deep running back room,
Starting point is 00:04:28 even with the departures that they had. But it just has that feeling that when they went out and they found L.J. Phillips. And there was another running back that they were looking at early on from Liberty. But I think they were looking for a different type of running back and a different kind of guy for this offense. What you're getting out of L.J. Phillips, he is 5.9, 225. I mean, he is that bowling ball battering ram type of a running back that you're going to get. He had 1921 yards in South Dakota for the coyotes last year. 19 touchdowns. A couple of things jumped off, though, when you're talking about Phillips.
Starting point is 00:05:02 And watching some of the highlight packages, which never paint the full story, certainly about a running back. You're not going to see a whole lot of negative runs in there and those kind of things. Obviously, you see the size right away. And it jumps out to him, that low center of gravity. But the physicality that he runs with, we'll see about the breakaway speed and what that looks like. Now, running away from some FCS guys completely different when you're making the jump up to the Big Ten. and definitely get that. His numbers from pro football focus are elite.
Starting point is 00:05:31 PFF graded him out, a 92.8 grade overall on offense. His run grade even better, a 93.3. These are elite level numbers, regardless of competition, that he's putting out there. But I mentioned the over 1,900 yards that he had rushing a season ago. How about this, though? 1921 is what he rushed for last season. 1,272 yards of those were after. contact. I mean, that is an absolute eye-opener when you are able to put together that kind of
Starting point is 00:06:02 numbers after you get hit for the first time. Something we talked a lot about with those Oregon running backs when they came to town is just how good those guys were falling forward, getting the extra yards. You think you got a wrapped up and it's going to be second down in seven instead of second down in four. And that's what L.J. Phillips was able to do in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Step up in competition. I get it. But I think it felt like one of those prospects that could be a difference maker. That's what Iowa feels and adding to that deep running back room. And then another wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:06:33 After Tony Diaz, they add one more, and that is Evan James who comes in from Furbin. 5-11, 170 pounds. Another speed guy out there, very productive this season, has three years of eligibility remaining. He also has a red shirt year in front of him. This is something that has become a big part of this conversation with many of these guys is the multiple years of eligibility that a lot of these guys have. At Firm in a year ago, James caught 65 balls for 796 yards,
Starting point is 00:07:03 seven touchdowns to go along with it. Again, looking at the numbers from Pro Football Focus. Very good. 82.2, 85.2, excuse me, overall offensive grade from him, and an 86.6. Receiving grade, also very good, rating as it pertains to catching the ball, his hands rating, very good there as well. So love to see this, Diaz, James, along with the wide receiver group, Reese Vander Z, obviously back and hopefully for a healthy 2026 for Vander Z. The highlight level catches that he's already put together in the limited reps that he's had
Starting point is 00:07:38 in his first two years on campus, KJ Parker, Dayton Howard, Jared Bowie, Terrence Smith, Xavier Stinson, one of the true freshmen coming in this season that they have high hopes for wide receiver room. Is it going to be different? We'll see. Jacob Gill was absolutely what I would need it. They did somebody confident. Jacob Gill was solid.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Not an elite level guy. Probably in the scale, if you're lining up the wide receivers, and you put three on each of the 18 teams in the Big Ten, where does he fit in out of that, say, top 50, maybe 40th, maybe 45th. But he was dependable. He was going to make that tough catch. He was going to go out there and he's going to block his ass off. He's going to do those kind of things.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Now you're taking that next step. That's what the hope is with this group, is you're going to have a guy and a group of guys now that can do it a myriad of different ways. The big body receivers with Reese Vander Z with Dayton Howard, the guys then with the speed, Diaz, James. Now, KJ Parker, can he take a step forward? That's what you're looking for out of this group
Starting point is 00:08:46 and certainly going to be opportunities. Because as we've seen these first two years, I was scoring offense has improved immensely. The offense as a whole is just, it's more pleasing to the eye. It's just, it's more enjoyable to watch them, even though the passing numbers have still not been very good, these first two seasons of Tim Lester. We're going to see for the first time a quarterback that's going to be able to actually go through spring football,
Starting point is 00:09:09 a starter go through spring football. And I think that is going to be an immense help to the way this going, this goes. Jeremy Hecklinski is going to be the guy I anticipate that will ultimately get the start. Hank Brown going to be his backup. That's how I see things at this point. But we got spring football. And they're going to be able to play things out, go out there, see who is going to be the best guy for this job and these weapons that they're putting together.
Starting point is 00:09:33 And another avenue that we've talked about, and every day, as you certainly know, I think I'm higher on this offensive line than a lot of people are. I go over and look at some of the new names you're going to be in there. And when you lose three guys that have been all Big Ten, guys that have had national recognition in all of them with Jennings Dunker moving on, Logan Jones, the Remington Award winner this season of Bo Stevens, who was an All-American, yeah, there's going to be a step back.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Still, with what they've done, guys that have had plenty of reps, Jack Dotsler was part of the rotation at left tackle earlier this season. He slides into the right tackle position, coupled with the two returning starters, who Trevor Lout was absolutely tremendous this year. You think about his upside after going through it for the first time. Obviously, Cade Piper, who we've been talking about since he was a red shirt freshman, and he was the six offense alignment that year before coming a starter this past season. Michael Mislinski, who has been banged up so many times throughout the course of his career,
Starting point is 00:10:31 his ability to come in and help either at the center of guard position. We got to see a little bit of him this year. And then Layton Jones, because of injuries this year, including to both Stevens, I think he played a lot more than anybody would have thought coming into the season because of those injuries. And I thought he did a good job, too. and now getting that experience this season, how important that's going to be for him to catapult them forward. Depth we'll see.
Starting point is 00:10:53 That's still, I think, a question mark with this offensive line. There are some young guys that are incredibly excited about, but young guys in the offensive line usually doesn't translate into good offensive lines. But the starting group right now at minimum, I think is going to be solid going into this season with a deep running back room, some new weapons out wide, and a new quarterback going through spring football. One final name also out of the transfer portal, Iowa nabbed over the weekend. That was Xavier Stiles out of Robert Morris, 6-290 pounds,
Starting point is 00:11:23 Pitt, West Virginia, some group of five programs, also after him. Good grades also from Pro Football Focus again, an 82 grade from him defensively. How about a coverage grade of 89.1 at this safety position? And this is another one of those components we talked about. A guy with multiple years to learn, doesn't have to come in, It's not a one-year stopgap. This has been, it looks like Tyler Barnes, the Iowa GM.
Starting point is 00:11:49 This has been something that they've identified. And you obviously look at the national championship game and the behemoth that is Indiana. So as we know, the Hawkeyes had them on the ropes and a completed screen pass or maybe having a different conversation today. That aside, they went out. They brought in guys from James Madison, but not just guys that brought, came along with Signetti, guys that had multiple years of eligibility. and that's something that they've also done in the portal. They're old.
Starting point is 00:12:16 They are, their average age is 23 years old. The average age of the Green Bay Packers is 25. That shows you just age definitely matters. And when you can be old in college athletics, it doesn't matter to sport. When you got age, you got a chance. We'll see if this Iowa football team has a chance to have something special coming up in 2006. Well, we definitely thought it was going to be special for Iowa basketball this year.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Ben McCullen coming in in year number one. He brings a preseason All-American along with him with Bennett Sturts. And this week has not looked like an All-American and is not going well. Some issues with Iowa basketball falling at home against Illinois. Is it time to be concerned about this team? Just being an NCAA tournament team. We'll talk about that and look back. Rapid Reaction after Iowa falls to Illinois.

Starting point is 00:14:35 Let's get into basketball and a frustrating day at Carver Hawkeye Arena as Iowa falls by six to the Illini in this matchup. Now, coming into it, it was a coin flip game. we talked about it last week. This is one that the advanced metrics had Iowa, one point favorite before the Minnesota game, and then afterwards a one point dog. Our friends over at Fandul had Illinois favored by point and a half,
Starting point is 00:14:59 I think was the closing line that ultimately went out there. But another slow start from this Iowa basketball team is a big story. And you have to love this team, not quitting, not getting down, not tucking their tail between their legs and quitting, as we've seen other teams, certainly in the past, that has happened to them. That's not this group, but they have to find a way to get off to better starts because this has been nothing short of atrocious. And when you're looking up and you're down right away in the game and you look up at the scoreboard
Starting point is 00:15:32 and it's 29-11, even before that, the path to a comeback with this team, the way that they play, very slow tempo, limited possessions, to come back when you're digging those kind of holes like they did against Minnesota, like they did against Illinois. Really, the only good start that they had when you're talking about some of these upper level matchups was against Iowa State. And we know what happened with that one, though they came back and gave themselves a shot late. And they gave themselves a shot late here. Now, I know a big part of the narrative is about the illness that is going through this team.
Starting point is 00:16:07 It's something we talked a little bit about after the loss to Minnesota. And I don't want to be crass. about this, teams get sick a lot. Like, I get it. It sucks. And when he got Cam Manwa plays eight minutes in the game, and you can see guys, and you hear afterwards that after a great performance,
Starting point is 00:16:31 Tadion Banks, he's throwing up in the locker room. Just how sick this team is, and his staff is sick, and on and on and on. Maybe it's the Jordan Flu game that just ruined everything for a lot of us, of a certain time period, but boy, I just, I don't want to hear it. I don't, and nobody used it as an excuse. And it is reality.
Starting point is 00:16:54 I just want to see wins. And with what's in front of them coming up next week, the real possibility, they'll make their way to Purdue, get blown out like normal. Lose probably in a tight one against Indiana. And if that happens, I was suddenly going to be sitting at 12 and 6, 2 and 5 in the Big 10. though there are a lot of winnable games,
Starting point is 00:17:17 and in fact, after that stretch, an incredibly winnable group. They get Rutgers at home. They're favored by 18. They get USC at home, favored by 8, though USC just did what Iowa couldn't do, go up to Williams Arena and win. You go on the road against Washington, Oregon, and Washington, back-to-back, and though you're a slight favorite in both those games,
Starting point is 00:17:38 you feel confident about this team winning back-to-back road games in the Pacific Northwest? Northwestern comes to town, Maryland. But when we're going through these games, where's the quality win? And where's the win that you're hanging your hat on? In the non-conference, we thought maybe Xavier was going to be good. They're not. Thought that old Miss win might look good?
Starting point is 00:17:58 It's not. Grand Canyon, it's a decent mid-major win. The UCLA win, again, is okay. That's a home one. Unless you're talking about later on in the season, beating Purdue at home, beating Nebraska one of the two times. You get to face the Huskers. The Wisconsin opportunity looks a little bit better.
Starting point is 00:18:19 That one's on the road. Beating Michigan? Well, Michigan looked beatable, I guess, on Saturday. The chances of quality victories start to dry up very quickly. And that's why, again, we come back to this week and what's in front of them, stealing a win. And it doesn't matter which one of the two, Indiana more likely than the other. It's not a necessity.
Starting point is 00:18:41 It's not a must. But, boy, it definitely changed the tent. center around Iowa basketball. A starting lineup that nobody has a offensive grade over 100. The top guy out of the starting group was Cooper Kach who finished with the 94 grade of Ken Palm, 2 of 8 from behind the arc as a team. They go 9 of 29 from the 3 point line, 31%. Here's another component.
Starting point is 00:19:08 And again, maybe the illness had something to do with this, taking away some of the just burst in your legs. They'll get to the free throw line six times, and two of them came on that hook and hold late in the game as Iowa was hanging around and had an opportunity. And boy, Ben Sturts makes a layup, like we talked about against Minnesota, makes an open three pointer. Things could be a much, much different at this point. But they're not, this is what you are. But just getting in the free throw line only six times at home, head scratching, at the very least. On the other side, Illinois, we told you beforehand. Kyle and Boswell is one of the top defenders in the Big Ten.
Starting point is 00:19:47 And he definitely showed that against Bennett Sturts. Sturts finishes the game 5 of 17, though he does have six assists and only one turnover. I would got back in the game down 14 and cut it to six when he was on the bench. What's also going on with the foul trouble for Bennett Sturts? I mean, that's another kind of wild component to this season is now here recently how many times we've been talking about him in foul trouble. had to set out a bigger stretch than we're used to against UCLA. You go through the game log, he's played 33 minutes against Illinois at the foul trouble,
Starting point is 00:20:20 plays 29 minutes against Minnesota, 35 against UCLA because of the foul trouble. He's not playing the 40 minutes game. A lot of people thought he was going to, and certainly what he was doing at the beginning of the year. He plays all 40 minutes against Western Illinois and 40 minutes against Xavier in a blowout victory. That's different. I don't know. odd at the very least of what that's doing. Interesting quote after the game, too, from Coach McCollum.
Starting point is 00:20:46 As Ben McCollum was talking to the media afterwards and brought up Cooper Koch and talking to him and not wanted to shatter his confidence, coming down on him after he had some choice words for Cooper. After he went under a screen, old habits die hard, and led to an open three-pointer for Illinois. And he said, if that's something you probably shouldn't be, to paraphrase playing mid-10 basketball.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Ben McCollum's talked about, talked to these guys, figuring them out. I'm sure a lot of you saw the clip in the huddle from Fox of him just imploring his guys. It's not what I thought this would be at this point. A lot of season still in front of them. A lot of basketball here. This week, I'm going to say a lot.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Let's get healthy. Let's get over the illness. Get over the sickness. Find ways to get victories. One. Just steal one of these. and I think we're having a different one. On the other side that Illinois team, they're good.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Man, they got some dudes. And now I'm just left looking at Underwood and wondering, as he's kind of changed the way that he has built his team here recently, is he going to be able to get over the hump? And you go through when, outside of the elite eight year that they had a couple of years back, this team, for the most part, always had dudes, always had talent. That hasn't been a problem. It's taking that next step.
Starting point is 00:22:11 I don't know. Maybe this group is that team that can take that next step. Because Brad Underwood, he looks grumpy over there. And sometimes he is kind of grumpy. But he's one of the guys in the Big Ten. One of the few guys that actually like is Brad Underwood. And they have won now three in a row in a row in the Big Ten. And they got a pretty decent slate in front of them to make a little bit of a move
Starting point is 00:22:31 before they got Purdue coming up here in a couple of weeks. When we go through the Big Ten, you look, you got your upper echelon teams. Purdue, Michigan. Illinois, Michigan State. I guess we got to throw Nebraska in there after they come back against Indiana over the weekend. And then he got that next tier that I was a part of. Wisconsin, UCLA, Minnesota, maybe Washington is in there. Then he got some drags at the bottom.
Starting point is 00:23:00 You got three teams without a conference win in Maryland, Penn State, and Northwestern. You got teams with one win in Oregon. Ruckers looks bad again, as they said, at two and four. You can't afford those losses either. Because we talked about the opportunity for the lack of maybe quality victories on this resume. Well, if you're not going to have a bunch of quality victories in there, you can't afford any ugly losses. Let's hope anything doesn't get as worse than what we saw against Minnesota and that loss last Tuesday. Well, it was not very fun for the men's basketball team.
Starting point is 00:23:31 The good news. The ladies picked us up, though for a while, they looked like they were going to be bludgeoned as well as they went out to Indiana. A big comeback victory for the ladies. That's next. Locked on Hawkeyes. The new year is here and it's a perfect time to reset your routine and refresh your space. Over to the women, a comeback victory as they get it done against Indiana. This thing felt like it was training the same. direction as the men, but a big third quarter, change things around for the Iowa women.
Starting point is 00:25:53 I loved what we saw too at a couple of different players. And this continues to be the part with Chit Chat, right? Chit Chat in the big moment, she's not scared. And to have that confidence, to have that ability, even maybe at times when you're not playing, certainly great. This was not a vintage Chit Chat game. We're going to be talking about her and about. bouncing around, bouts your grandkids on the knee,
Starting point is 00:26:20 talking about the time that she went to Indiana and scored 13. However, that three-pointer in the fourth quarter was a huge one. When they needed buckets. But the other component, too, is this team, the youth that they have, and they weigh that they're defending. Now, during the early port of the game, when they're down 18, 4, they did not look like that squad at all. And when they're giving up big spurts and a couple of different ones
Starting point is 00:26:43 during the first half of the game, that did not look like the same team defensively. But I loved what they did switching and the way that the leading score, Sitsky, what they were able to do with her really hedging hard on the screens. Every time she got the ball, they're doubling, getting it out of her hands, making somebody else, and making it difficult. And she finished one of 11, her last 11 shots from the field in the ball game, is they said somebody else is going to have to beat us. And that worked out incredibly well. We talk about the upside of this team, still young. Also got to give a shout out to Fearbaugh. Kylie Fearbach coming back into the game, speaking about a big shot.
Starting point is 00:27:22 She had one in there also during the comeback. And we know what she can do on the defensive end. She is a good, versatile defender, good on-ball defender, not going to get lost out there. She's not going to wow you scoring. She can knock down an open shot from time to time. She can get to the tin every once in a while. But that veteran presence in a moment like that, when you're not playing well,
Starting point is 00:27:43 I think it really helped that team. and if Fearbach was still out, I don't know if they win this game against Indiana. That was a nice victory and definitely one that helps this team continue to stay towards the top half of the standings and in shouting distance of some of the elite teams in this conference. Indeed, it would. And the OFA record for Indiana certainly does not paint the picture, as you saw.
Starting point is 00:28:08 That's a decent team. I don't think they're going to be a tournament team, but nice road victory, a good road victory. Those, as we know, we're not going to wish those away. We are out of time for today. We'll be back with you tomorrow, though. Here, Lockdown, Hawkeyes, we've got a lot more. We'll get his perspective on that one. What I would can possibly do to pull off the upset, that will be coming your way. Plus, we'll keep an eye on the transfer portal as we do each and every day. still a few days left. Iowa still needs a punter, a long snapper, maybe another defensive tackle, maybe another wide receiver. We'll see what else is out there for Iowa football. But Tyler Barnes, Kirk Farranson, Company, done a really nice job, I believe, in this portal cycle.
