The Iowa football team looked different on Saturday, and it goes beyond the quarterback battle.
The Hawkeyes have more playmakers, more explosiveness, and a roster to make a bigger statement.
Why, this could be a very different Iowa football team.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Coming up on the program today, well, it is a big weekend,
not just because of the in-state rivalry with Iowa and Iowa State.
It's big because of what happening in the recruiting world.
Iowa welcome in a top 10 prospect and Caden Dottry coming in this season,
and that's not alone.
We'll talk about that more coming up here with David Eicholt, who will join us from hawkeyeinsider.com.
And we will jump into the quarterback spot a little bit deeper on and get deeper into that conversation.
But we begin today's conversation with a thought as we go back to Saturday in the dominating performance against Northern Illinois.
As we throw out the caveat every single time when the matchup last Saturday comes up, that was a bad football team.
Northern Illinois is not good.
There's a reason they're over under coming into the year was three and a half.
They are expected to be at the bottom of the Mountain West in their first season,
playing in a new conference.
You can see this is a team going through transition, and they weren't very good.
I get that.
I understand that.
But as you go through a look at this Iowa football team,
and as I rewatched the game again the other night in the little fast forward in time number three going through the game,
but there are a couple of things that just jumped out that made me think about this.
this could be different.
And we came into the season with a lot of question marks.
And it wasn't just quarterback, no, it was about the defense.
After all the pieces that they lost up front, what would that going to look like?
A middle linebacker, a new one taking over in Cam Buffington, the defensive backfield.
You know, they started seven new starters out there.
We talked about the special teams and how difficult it was going to be to replace all the different pieces there from your long snapper,
to your specialist, to, of course,
maybe the best kick returner, not just in Iowa football history, but in Big Ten history
in Caden Weechin, oh, by the way, the guy that ran it all and had done it in an elite level,
he moved on to Michigan State.
Yet with all these questions, I come back to this.
And watching this game again and looking at what Iowa did, there was an element that does
look different.
There are a couple of components to that, and you go through.
The run game has been tremendous under Tim Lester in his first two seasons.
And now here in year number three, we anticipate that's going to continue.
But listening to some people that really know offensive line play and know that the level that I was playing at already, specifically inside, when you have K. Peeper, preseason All-American, he's out there kicking butt.
And Layton Jones, who when he played a year ago, there really wasn't a step down from an NFL draft pick.
And then what we see from Kail Winner and his speed and athleticism that he plays out at the center position.
and what we thought was going to be Cade Piper coming into the year.
And this former walk-on from Waukeen Northwest just says,
no, slow down.
He's going to take over the job, and you're seeing Kail Winter.
You have as good of an interior of your offensive line as anybody in the country.
Oh, by the way, you have an offensive lineman at left tackle,
the most important position for a lot of teams.
Yeah, he's a preseason, All-American, too.
Not too shabby.
Then you throw into the fact that Kamari Bolton did look different on Saturday.
A running game that you know is going to be there.
That you're going to be able to run the football because of that offensive line, because of Kamari Moulton, you're going to be able to run the ball.
Another reason that it feels perhaps different for Iowa football this year is what they have out wide.
And it wasn't just the play of Tony Diaz, which was tremendous.
And there was even more that was left on the table, a couple of missed throws, a drop in there too.
But still, Tony Diaz could have had one of the best performances.
we've seen in a decade in a Hawkeye uniform from a wide receiver.
That's how good he was right away.
But it's not just him.
It's Reese Fandersey, who we've seen make plays for the Hawkeyes.
It's Evan James that showed his burst, though it was in a punt return.
Depth there.
How about Jared Bowie going up and making a couple plays out there?
There are real guys.
Dayton Howard has done it before for this Iowa football team.
There's actual depth.
There's actual playmakers at the wide receiver position.
Yes, I know quarterback is still that one.
We'll leave that to the side.
But then I go to the defense, and that's really where my wheels started turning
when this thought started to jump in is just how damn fast.
Those guys looked out there.
Again, yes, I understand it.
Northern Illinois stunk.
Okay, hear you.
However, the way that they were flying to the ball, the depth that they had,
the speed at which they played,
and going out there in game number one and playing at that level right away
with seven new starters out there defensively,
they look like they didn't miss a beat.
You couple that with upside.
And when you talk about upside and guys that do look different,
the defensive line a year ago was really good.
It was solid.
It was sturdy.
But it was not built with a bunch of guys that were going to be the quick twitch athletes
that are going to go out there and get to the quarterback a bunch.
And as I posed to you for your everydayers,
you remember this a couple of weeks ago,
I asked, could we actually see this defense be better getting to the quarterback this year,
even with the questions that they had up for?
run. And I think one game in, the answer is absolutely. We absolutely could see that out of this
group because there's depth there. There's guys that definitely can do it. And when you go through
and you look at Joseph Anderson and you look at Kamari-Bride and you go through and, of course,
the starters with Jose A. Vanessa out there on one side. And Kenneth Merriweather, you're talking about
real depth and guys that all can get there. The 3-3-5 package that they employed with Preston
Reese and Derek Weiskoff coming off the edge and the speed that they have, they operate. And this
team looks so fast on the defensive side of the football that that starts to get you pumped up.
I get it.
You maybe are one of the people that is built like me.
And normally, this is not me.
Me as a fan, I don't get this way.
Maybe it's because I've been burned too many times before.
Maybe it's because of that scar tissue that has built up.
And I don't want to get hurt again when it comes to building the team up that I root for so
much.
But there does look to be something different.
Maybe another component to that also is suddenly that daunting Big Ten schedule that Iowa had in the beginning doesn't look quite as difficult.
From the road trip to Michigan, who obviously needed an extra second to beat Western Michigan in their opener to Washington.
In a rivalry game, albeit still didn't look great against Washington State.
You wonder about DeMond Williams coming back after trying to get into the transfer portal, making his way back.
if that could be a program that blows up.
I didn't think Illinois was very impressive.
That's a road game late in the season.
Minnesota looked good.
It was against a bad opponent.
And after you get through those opening three games against Michigan, Ohio State, and Washington,
we know that schedule is not overly daunting.
Suddenly, you start to think special.
You start to think different and you go into the realm of,
can this team get to 10 and 2?
Is 10 and 2 an automatic bid?
into the college football playoff, if you are a Big Ten game, a team,
these are the thoughts that are going in.
It just looked different than Saturday.
We've seen clockers.
We've seen good games as well in the opener,
but you go to last season against a overmatched Albany team,
and there were struggles.
You go back to South Dakota State a few years back,
and the 73 victory that was aided by two safeties
in order to get that victory in that one.
These are the things that you have.
and this looks different.
One opponent, an overmatch one, I get it.
Still, wheels are turning here.
It's time to have a little bit of fun as we get ready for Sy Hawk Week.
We'll talk about the quarterback spot, David Eichol,
with the latest from over in Iowa City at Press Conference Day earlier this week in Iowa City.
We'll talk David about that.
And also get into basketball recruiting as Iowa.
Both the men and the women have a big weekend in front of them.
We'll talk about that when we come back.
Stay right there on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.

We are joined by David Eichold. Hawkeye Insider.com is where you can go to catch David as he
talks all things. Hawkeyes press conference day over in Iowa City yesterday, David.
Thanks for giving us a little bit of time. And well, I went through the opening segment of the
program today and it really didn't bring up quarterback at all. I left it for you. So fill us in.
I know he had an opportunity to hear from both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hank Lindski. Your thoughts on the
big question that still remains this Iowa football team.
What are they doing at quarterback?
Well, if you thought that Kirk Farrance is going to make an ultimate decision after one
week, you knew better, Trent.
You and I and a lot of people knew better, right?
It was always going to go multiple weeks.
It sounds like there's going to be two quarterbacks.
The big question is who starts?
And I've kind of gone back and forth on this.
I think if you're trying to make it a completely fair competition, they really are right
next to each other, maybe you throw in Jeremy Hecklinsky to start to give
him a chance of some starting snaps instead of going in the middle of a game.
Obviously, Hank Brown got three series last week and I performed very well with a really good
run game.
But at the same time, you want to go with Hank Brown, who now has experience starting in that
circumstance, because without a doubt, Iowa State is the best of Iowa three non-conference
teams.
I really don't know what that says, considering there's two lower-level teams and obviously
renovated Iowa, Iowa State.
I think right now I'm leaning toward Hank Brown,
but I also think right now they'll probably have five or six series
scripted out just like last week.
And then I think they're going to ride the hot hand,
because I don't think they're going to take too many risks against Iowa State,
the rivalry, they want to get the Sigh Hawk back, all those other things.
But I expect both quarterbacks to play.
So you look at that, and I thought that as a really interesting point,
and something that I had talked about earlier in the week, David,
is the scripted plays.
And I know the question came up to Jeremy Hicklinsky.
He said his first play out there, that was scripted.
And then after that, it was just rolling through whatever Lester was calling,
that's what they were going with.
That is impactful.
That is something I think that is important.
But because Hank Brown got off to such a good start,
I don't know,
fair is not a word that's used in college football very often.
And because he was so good early in the game,
it started to dissipate as it went on.
I just roll with Hank Brown.
You know, being what we saw,
in that football game.
I guess I believe Hank deserved it and deserved it because of what he did on the field
early last year.
Yeah.
And I'm inclined to agree with you, too, Trent.
But the other side of it, too, is this.
Again, if you talk about going down the stretch of a game, who do you want to
finishing the game, riding the hot hand.
Like Hank Brown complete eight of his first nine passes, I think for 97 yards, obviously
have the touchdown to Tony Diaz, who is living up to the hype and probably more so.
But I would also be a little bit concerned about the way he finished.
the game. Now, granted, he did not play in the second half. And I think that kind of shows
where he kind of sits in this quarterback pecking order, or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
But he only finished completing four out of his final 11 passes for 37 yards. So does that
mean after the scripted plays that Hank Brown is just not capable of handling the kind of off the cuff
and going with the game and being adaptable? I think that's something that we still need to see
and adjust to. At the same time with Hecklinsky, yeah, the first play in the first series is
I think that all kind of went to chaos when Hecklinsky caught the snap that was too high over
his head and probably made what I would say is the throw of the day to Jerry at Bowie.
He had a great catch on that sideline.
But he kind of had a catch, turn, get hit and complete the path.
He was able to do that.
So I'm inclined to agree with you.
I think based on the way he started, I think it makes sense to start Hank Brown.
But again, I think about coming down the course of the game, who can go make a play,
who can do all these other things?
Can Hank Brown do that?
That's still something.
and a big reason why I think Hank Brown has not secured the starting job yet and that this is still a competition.
Let's jump into a couple of the other news and notes that came out of this one.
I want to go over to the defense and I was real intrigued by that 335 look that they employed a couple of different times on passing down.
Third and Longs, we saw Preston Reese out there.
He's, as you've seen, special teams, a guy, he just let him run and he can definitely do that from the linebacker spot.
We also got to see Weiss Koppel out there.
Kamari Brown coming off the edge.
A lot of different things that they can do
is the 335 something
that it certainly works personnel-wise.
Is this something you think is going to stay
with the Phil Parker defense?
Oh, I hope so.
I think it made all the sense in the world, right?
In certain sets and certain situations,
I'm not saying making a permanent fixture.
But how many segments of you and I spent
over the last six months or so
talking about how worried, you know,
our worry about the defensive line.
They did play well against Northern Illinois,
But I mean, I really don't know what else to take from Northern Illinois,
other than the probably not a very good football team.
I think them in Simo would actually probably play a very good football game against one another.
But I also think when you get the 3-3-5,
I thought Bryce Hawthorne looked a lot better than he did last year.
I love that they had the two kind of speed edge rushers just to say,
hey, you know, go pressure the quarterback.
And you have so much depth and athleticism at the linebacker spot.
Some of those delayed blitzes, I think, make all the sense in the world.
So I think in those third and medium, third and long situations,
I think it's a great way to get some of the younger linebackers who, you know,
we've been hearing about behind the scenes and we've seen flashes of it,
but allowing them to get on the field to make impactful confidence building plays.
Like you said, like a Preston Reese, like a Derek Weiskechoff,
like it is something that I believe is going to be similar to maybe a Raider package
from several years ago.
They're going to pick and choose their spots.
But if you can do a 425, a 4-3, a 3-3-5 in a 3-3-5 in certain different
sets and situations.
You've got to feel really good about the versatility of Iowa's defense,
despite all the new faces.
The defense looked fast.
It was flying around.
It was also an overwhelmed opponent,
and you saw that.
But I want to go specifically to a huge question mark that we had inside.
Hawthor looks like, yes,
the light bulb has definitely come on,
and he is ready to have an outstanding season.
I know pro football focus graded out Will Hubert at a really high level.
Again, opponent being in there.
And we got to see some Devin.
Kennedy. And we got to see Alibaggio late in that football game. Are you more confident today
than you were coming into the season that defensive tackle is going to be at least all right?
I mean, maybe. But again, I don't want to take too much away from Northern Illinois. I give
Krette more so for the three three five. I think it makes so much more sense. And again, if you're
running Bryce Hawthorne as your only defensive tackle in those sets, I think it makes a lot of sense.
I feel a little bit better. But I would say I feel better just about the versatility and the weapons
that Iowa is looking to use because the other thing is you don't want to overreact.
I don't think any defensive player got more than 29 snaps in the season opener.
So we still haven't seen that sort of consistency and what it's like, you know,
they get down the fourth quarter.
It's a close game.
Will they have the willpower?
Will they have the energy?
Will they have the adrenaline to be able to go make those impactful plays?
Again, Will Huber?
I know graded out.
All right, Luke Gaffney.
I just need to see them a little bit more against higher level competition.
and I hate to say it, man.
We might not see that until Ohio State because I'll tell you,
my opinion in Michigan was not as high as others.
I think you were in the same boat.
I feel even better about that in my preseason prediction right now.
Said there was the most winnable of that three-game gauntlet at the beginning of the Big Ten
Slade and definitely feel that way.
And maybe even that road trip to Washington, not quite as difficult as maybe we thought.
That's a long ways away.
But we got a big one before that starting this week against Iowa State.
How about the running game?
Kamari Moulton looked like, yes,
there is an extra gear there.
He battled that shoulder injury last year.
Not sure how dil,
debilitating it was for him,
but it was an injury that kept him out of a game last season
and came back earlier than people thought
in that game against Rutgers
when they really needed him in that comeback victory a year ago.
When you look at Bolton,
is he ready to carry the ball 25 times Saturday night if need be?
And then after him with no LJ. Phillips this week,
who do you like between Xavier Williams,
maybe it's Nathan McNeil or dare I say, Braden Jackson?
You were listening to that press conference yesterday because that's exactly what I asked
it's about the running back game, right?
The one thing I do wish he answered and I think he avoided it for a reason, because I did
flat out ask him if tomorrow he is capable of handling the ball 25 times.
I think mentally he is.
I just don't know if he could take the physical punishment between the tackles 25 times.
I think he's going to be able to get you 20 tomorrow.
I love the idea of Bray and Jackson.
I think people saw kind of his vision, what he can do.
we've been hearing how good he is behind the scenes.
I just don't know if you can throw him against Iowa State at this point.
I think next week against Northern Iowa, you can.
We'll see how long L.J. Phillips was out.
You love the flashes that you saw of Nathan McNeil last year.
You really want Xavier Williams to figure it out.
And I got to tell you, as bad as both those guys looked last week, I think they're going to be fine.
It's 13 carries for 16 yards.
The offensive line was shifting in and out.
I would probably lean a little bit more toward Nathan McNeil.
I think he just has more speed on the outside.
If you want to go with a rough and tumbleback and you're, you know,
you want to take advantage of Iowa State's defense, which probably isn't as big as they have
been in in past years, then I think you throw in a guy like Xavier Williams,
but does Xavier Williams have the vision in top end speed to kind of create some of those
game-changing dynamic plays.
The other thing that I would say, though, even more at the running game and Camarie Moulton,
because I think Camarie Moulton's in for a big year.
I think I told you that back in May.
He's one of my breakout players.
He's been incredibly important.
This team just has so much versatility with it.
And I think Tim Lester is really looking forward to unfolding a couple new wrinkles.
And again, just based on everything else they have, even in the run game, I think they can get fairly creative.
Maybe those end around for Tony Diaz.
Maybe you want to get Evan James in space as well.
Like there's going to be a lot of different weapons that Iowa has.
And so I think they're going to try to utilize that to take pressure off of Camarie Moulton.
Jalen Rayner was able to pass the ball down the field a couple of times for Iowa State over the weekend.
It's been a struggle for him in his career at Arkansas State.
Defensive backs, though, is certainly going to be more challenged in this one.
The game played.
What do you look at it against Iowa State, what they're going to look to do offensively
and going up against an athletic quarterback in Jalen Rayner?
He's kind of that boom or bust type of guy.
I think he's a really fun quarterback to watch.
I actually thought he had more success vertically in the opener than I thought he would.
I do know that he probably wants some of those short to intermediate gains back.
But the other thing is, it seems like I'm taking way too much away from a game against
Seimo.
So just take that, take everything about say with a grain of assault.
They look to push the ball vertically and to get explosive plays through the air and that
seemed like that was their entire offense.
What's Phil Parker's defense almost entirely predicated off of?
It's preventing those explosive plays, defending the middle of the field.
We're not, Iowa's not getting Tyler Brown back this week.
They're going to have Zach Lutmer back.
there. So if you have Zach Lutmer back there, I just have a really tough time believing that they're
going to be able to get off multiple explosive plays over the middle. I'm curious how they adjust
as far as running the football goes. I think they need to get Jalen Rainer outside the pocket a little
bit more and look to utilize kind of his quick feet and his kind of playmaking ability from that
standpoint. But at the same time, they look to push the ball vertically and get too creative with it.
I think turnovers are going to be an absolute killer for Iowa State in this matchup. So I really don't
envy them right now because they don't have a full grasp of kind of what kind of football team they are.
And then you're going up against Phil Parker's defense.
It's going to be a tall task, I think, for both sides.
Because at the same time, Iowa has so many new faces on defense.
They know Phil Parker's philosophy.
They feel great about what they accomplished last week.
But Iowa state's going to play like they have absolutely nothing to lose.
So I think there's going to be a few tricks up their sleeve as well.
One more on football.
And then I got a basketball note before we run out of time.
David Eichold joining us from Hawkeye.
insider. You were, you and I were the two that were willing to go out on the ledge for Tony
Diaz this summer. The two people that write and talk about the Hawkeyes all the time,
Chad and some of the other beat guys, they were a little bit more tepid. We were ready.
And boy, do I feel vindicated one game in? I'm sure you do as well.
I mean, you should have had 150 yards and three touchdowns. He was open every single play.
You know, but that's also the timing issues that Hecklinsky and Hank Brown had.
And Heck, Linsky said, we've hit that million times in practice.
I should have hit that.
So you like that kind of accountability.
I'm going to a step farther with that trend because I'm on my high horse right now.
You know me.
I'm going to throw, you know, smoke on the fire, you know, gas on the fire, everything else.
Tony Diaz is the most talented receiver Iowa's had since Marvin McNutt and Darrell Johnson-Colianos.
Yeah.
I think Amir Smith-Marset was really good.
I also think he's inflated because of his ability in the return game.
Tony Diaz as far as an actual fundamentally sound wide receiver and some of the things that he can do.
He moves differently.
He catches the football.
And the fact that Iowa force fed him 13 targets in game one, you have to love that upside.
And you have to know and be kind of vindicated that he's going to be a focal point of this offense.
Basketball to wrap things up, you're over on the women's basketball, Sean Bachett, Hawkeye Insider.
He's on the men's side of things.
But obviously a big visit coming up with Cain Dottrey making his way to Iowa.
City, top 10 player nationally, the point guard that was the bus, buzz player of everything
in the AAU circuit this summer.
Doctrie coming in this weekend, he's already taken a couple of visits.
What can he tell us the latest on that front as he gets ready to make his way to Iowa City?
I mean, this is probably the most important visit that Iowa's had in 15 years, I would say.
I mean, I would go back to Adam Woodbury and Mike Gazelle just as far as like taking
the program into the next direction and the next stage.
But this is the guy where he'd become immediately a second weekend.
contender off the jump.
Kay and Daughtry, Iowa's had weeks and months to prepare for this visit.
I think they are one of the favorites in this recruitment, probably alongside Miami of Florida.
I'm not getting discount Arkansas, though, in that category as well, maybe Tennessee.
But he loves Ben McCollum.
His skill set fits Iowa to a T.
And again, you talk about elite point guard play and Ben McCollum kind of being known as
the point guard whisper.
Like, this would probably be one of the best fits in the entire country from a skill set standpoint
and a schematic standpoint in between a coach and a player.
That's not my words.
That's our 24-7 sports national team.
So Iowa is a very legit threat in this recruitment.
But again, maybe you can have some better context to this trend,
but I fully believe that this is probably one of the most important visits
in the last 15 to 20 years for Iowa basketball.
No, I don't think it's hyperbolic to say that.
Absolutely.
That's what you look at with Dottery is he is big time.
And then finally over on the women's basketball front,
you know they have some visitors coming in.
you got a name or two of interest for the women's basketball program.
Yeah, so I mean, they're probably going to have eight to nine different players on campus this week.
A lot of 2030 guards and 2029 guards, Trent.
So if you want to feel old, that certainly was eye opening to me, right?
Yes.
The top priority visit, though, is a four, kind of a borderline five-star post of the East Coast and Cleo Hartwell,
six foot four, tremendous defender.
Her offensive game is still coming together by great rebounder, defender, Jada Subert,
the current 27 commit from Wisconsin.
Really talented shooting guards coming in as well.
Probably will play a little bit of recruiting.
A recruiter from that standpoint.
But yeah, both basketball staff, man,
really ramping things up here for Seahawk.
And I think it's going to be a tremendous atmosphere.

Found this interesting, the starting offensive line for Iowa State coming up this weekend.
And as we were impressed by the Iowa defensive line on Saturday and what they were able to do,
these are where the players came from for the Iowa offensive line.
Now, the headliner is Jake Taylor.
No, not for Major League.
This is a different Jake Taylor.
Jake Taylor didn't play last season for Oklahoma.
did start a couple of years ago before injury started to slow down his career.
After that, though, look at where these guys came from.
The left guard, the guy next to him.
Caden Moss, he was at D2, Sioux Falls a season ago.
The starting center, Braden Smith.
He was at Tarleton State at the FCS level.
The right guard, Trevor Bindle, he was a redshirt guy last year at Washington State.
And finally, your right tackle, Maasai King.
He started five games at Akron before that and was a Jukau guy.
coming out of high school.
Iowa State struggled to run the football,
though they did have an 85-yard touchdown run
that was taken away by a light-holding penalty in that one.
That would have changed the complexion.
Still, they struggled to run the football
against Southeast Missouri State.
What's it going to look like on Saturday?
We got you covered coming up tomorrow on Friday.

Iowa State with Matt Campbell at the helm.
