I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of
the U.S.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted!
It's picked off right away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker!
Pick six!
Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh!
He's got it!
Smith!
Touchdown.
85 yards.
High on.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade, and excited to be back for another episode of the show today.
And today's episode is brought to you by rockauto.com.
Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need. And on today's
show, we're going to be continuing some of our discussion of the stuff that's happening within
the Iowa football program. As we talked about on Monday's show, we talked a lot about racial
inequality and a lot of the players that are speaking up against Chris Doyle and even Brian Ferencz and some of the other Iowa football coaches.
We're going to talk a bit about that again on today's show.
I'm touching on a few different points.
Specifically, Dylan Doyle is transferring.
I want to talk about what that means to the program and what that means potentially for Chris Doyle.
I want to talk about the texting policy and how that changed and how Iowa still doesn't
seem to completely get it.
But also, at what point are they supposed to be changing things on that aspect?
Basically, talking a bit about the texting policy and their clothing policy and that
kind of stuff and whether or not that is a deterrent for young
black athletes, right? If that's feeling culturally insensitive and stuff like that, I want to make
sure that we touch on that. And then finally, we're also going to talk about the Iowa United
and the fact that they are not going to be playing in the TBT this year. And then we're going to
touch on a bit of recruiting news as well. And we might even jump into some talk about the notorious DJK,
Daryl Johnson Koulianos, and the story he put out pretty recently
on Hawkeye Nation.
So we're going to be getting to all that.
If you do like the content we're providing to you daily and by daily,

And just a quick announcement.
Tomorrow we have a very special episode.
I will not be hosting it.
It will be an episode that's posting across the network, hosted by the podcasters on the Lockdown Sports Network that are black.
And they're going to be talking about what's happening right now.
Right here on the Lockdown Sports Network,
we are very passionate about making sure that people of color are treated equally
and don't have to step outside scared about what might happen
just because of the base of their skin color.
We want to make sure that we are being a part of that change.
And I'm really excited about the episode tomorrow.
I'm really excited to take a listen to it.
I hope you do as well.
Even if you are on a different side than what I am or what the network is, I hope you do
take a chance to listen to it.
I think the best way to learn is by listening.
And maybe you're going to learn something you don't know, or maybe you're going to see a different opinion or a side of things that you may not have realized.
And that might help change. It definitely helped me change seven years ago. So I think it's a
really cool opportunity for everyone that listens to this network to be able to listen to that. So
anyways, let's hop into the news. We'll start with the Dylan Doyle announcement. Dylan Doyle is transferring out of the Iowa program.
To me, that's probably one of the saddest outcomes of this whole thing.
Definitely not nearly as sad as the players that are speaking out about what is happening
and the inequality that's being experienced in the program and some of the issues there.
I think that's obviously the biggest concern.
But a side effect of that is obviously Chris Doyle.
I do not think he returns to Iowa.
And I think the fact that Dylan Doyle is transferring is a pretty good sign that Chris Doyle is
either going to be fired or resigned or is going to resign.
Excuse me.
fired or resigned or is going to resign excuse me um i just cannot imagine how after what has come out about his father that um dylan doyle could play for the iowa hawkeyes um which is
unfortunate obviously nothing has come out about dylan doyle um saying you know uh things that are
inappropriate but when you are the son of the guy who does that and he's been there for 19 19 years and 20 years, whatever, and everyone is, you know, a lot of players have been really
speaking out about it.
That would be really tough to come into a program like that.
That'd be very tough to handle.
And so he has decided to redshirt or not redshirt, excuse me, but to transfer out of the program.
And I'm gonna try to read the message.
He says, I like to take this time to thank Iowa football for my time in the program.
Growing up in Iowa City, it has always been my dream to wear the Tiger Hawk and I've taken
great pride in representing the state of Iowa for the last two seasons.
The relationships I've formed through this program will last forever and I'm so incredibly
grateful for each of the people I've met during my time here.
I'd like to thank my teammates and others in the community for the overwhelming amount
of support I've received the last few days.
With that being said, I'm announcing that I'll be moving on to the next step in my
career and entering the transfer portal.
I'm excited to join a new football team and give my all to help them on their path to
a championship.
So again, it's interesting.
And from a purely football standpoint, it's a loss for Iowa.
This, you know, Dylan Doyle was expected to be a part of this defense.
Obviously, we lost Christian Welch, and Iowa's moving more to a 4-2-5.
But Dylan Doyle saw time last year in games.
He saw action in 13 games, recorded 13 solo tackles, 10 assists,
and had one forced fumble.
You know, he was definitely going to be a part of this program moving forward as an athlete.
But nevertheless, I just don't think personally he could have stuck around.
And I do think this means that Chris Doyle is likely also on his way out as well.
It'll be interesting to see when that news actually happens and how that happens.
Because he was, as we talked about on Monday,
he was pretty adamant that it wasn't true.
I thought his apology was kind of a backhanded apology in general.
So we'll see how that also plays out in the grand scheme of things.
But when you look at how this impacts the team from a football perspective,
right now Dylan Doyle was listed as the starting middle linebacker
on the R-Lads depth chart.
Again, that's not an accurate depth chart.
That's not exactly what's happening.
And we haven't had spring practice to really get a better sense of what would be happening.
But I do think this opens up some room for some other guys.
Obviously, Nick Neiman is a guy who could potentially step in to that middle linebacker role.
Digimon Colbert, I think, has really excelled on the weak side linebacker side.
Seth Benson, Barrington Wade,
Justin Jacobs from last year, I think, is a huge player that could be huge.
I said huge a lot there, but he could be a really big asset to the Hawks as well.
He was a four-star recruit out of Ohio, a top 300 player.
Came in a little bit undersized for a linebacker.
So it'll be interesting to see how much weight he has gained.
But he could also be a guy who could fill in as a linebacker in replacement of Dylan
Doyle, who was expected to get some additional reps this season.
So interesting stuff nonetheless, and we'll obviously keep you updated on the story
as it continues to develop, but not a surprise. Dylan Doyle is transferring likely to me means
that his dad is also on the way out in Iowa city. So all things come to an end. And I think this one
has definitely run its course and probably should have happened sooner from a Chris Doyle perspective,
especially if the allegations are true. And again, as I've said, where there's smoke, there's fire. Obviously, we want to hear
both sides to every story, but whether or not he thinks he was wrong, it's how the players have
felt and they feel uncomfortable and that is never, ever okay. So if you want additional
information on that, make sure to check out Monday's episode as well. Again, I spoke a lot
about that and how important it is that it's not just about what I think.
I have the privilege of being white.
It's not just what I perceive, but it's how these young black athletes are perceiving these things as well.
That's it for segment number one.
Again, coming up, we have a few other topics we want to talk about.
The DJK stuff.
We want to also talk about Iowa United, the Skylar Bell recruitment, and the texting policy.
That will all be coming up on segments two and segment three of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
But for today, I want to make sure we do give you a quick announcement from our sponsor of the show today, rockauto.com.
rockauto.com is the best place to go for your car part needs.
I know personally, I hate going into an auto store and trying to figure out what exactly
I need.
And oftentimes, I don't exactly get what I want because it's whatever they have in their
inventory.
And it's impossible to hold the amount of inventory in those small stores that you possibly
need for all your car needs.
Fortunately, we have rockauto.com.
It can save you that annoying trip to the store.
You can order things online and you can do it at remarkably low prices.
Rockauto.com is a family business serving auto parts customers online for 20 years.
Go to rockauto.com to shop for their auto and body parts from hundreds of manufacturers.
Like I said, they have everything from engine control modules and brake parts to tail lamps, motor oil, and even new carpet.
Whether it's for your classic car or your daily driver, they can get everything you need and you
can get in just a few easy clicks delivered directly to your door. The catalog is unique
and remarkably easy to navigate. Like I said, I'm not a car guy, but it's easy for me to find
my car parts right there on rockauto.com. And as I said, the best part about it, the prices are always reliably low
and the same for professionals or do-it-yourselfers.
Why spend up to twice as much for the same parts?
So go to rockauto.com right now and see all the parts available for your car or truck
right locked on in their How Did You Hear About Us box so they know we sent you.
Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need.
RockAuto.com All right, so we're back with segment number two of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
And like I said, wanted to touch on a few other pieces about some of the fallout of what's been happening in the Iowa football program.
Kirk Ferentz and the team did decide that the players that are currently with the program could be texting again.
And that was seen as a big win, a really cool opportunity for the current players to be involved with what is going on.
And I thought initially that was a really cool move by the Hawks to allow these players to be able to tweet
and to be able to get involved in their communities and get involved with the
movement that's happening with the Black Lives Matter movement.
And I think initially I thought that was great.
Then it comes out that Iowa was only going to allow one tweet and it must be pre-approved
by the staff.
So here's the thing.
I used to think the no text, the no tweeting policy was great.
I thought it was great for the reason that
these players are young adults. A lot of mean crap can be said on Twitter. So the Twitter
ban, in my opinion, what I thought was great about it was the idea that maybe remove these
players from being able to respond to some of the ridiculous Twitter trolls out there.
Remove them from being able to put themselves in a situation that might be uncomfortable
or cause more attention to be brought to the Iowa football program.
So I thought initially that was great.
Then I thought it was awesome that Kirk decided to open that up and allow players to tweet.
And then I find out that it was one tweet and it was pre-approved.
Now that has since changed. They have opened it up so players can tweet as much as they want right
now. We're seeing some really great responses for some of the players on what is happening right
now. We're also seeing just some of the personality of these players from other tweets. I mean,
I think Keith Duncan was the one who said he beat Alex Marinelli 7-0 in NHL, and it was only the first period. So it's kind of fun to see some of these Iowa players talk about their personal lives on
Twitter, and it's also really incredibly powerful to see some of these other Iowa players talk
about what is happening and what it means to them and whatnot within the program.
But Iowa did not get this right.
The fact that they had to change it again, they had to do a second revision of their text or their tweeting policy,
I think is a little bit ridiculous.
And I think I saw someone post this on Twitter as well,
and I thought it really resounded with me.
The fact that you vetted through these players,
you recruited these players,
you made sure these players are quality character guys in your program.
Trust them to be able to tweet the right crap.
Trust them to be able to handle their crap on social media responsibly.
And I think what's even more interesting about this is that they can still get on Twitter.
Last year, we had a lot of Hawkeyes liking our tweets, current Hawkeyes.
So the idea that they're not going to see the Twitter trolls is not true.
They still have their Twitter.
They're still checking it.
They just can't actually tweet.
They also still have Instagram. They still have Facebooks. They are still able to communicate with social media, just not through Twitter.
And I know Twitter is a little bit easier, you know, just type out a quick tweet, a little bit
different than posting an Instagram photo. But nevertheless, you're still able to be on social
media. I think it's a little bit outdated at this point to not allow tweeting.
I think if anything, going forward, if you have a player who is incapable of handling himself on Twitter, then maybe that's not the right player for the Iowa football program. So I don't know.
I just, I think the policy in general is outdated. I think the way Iowa handled it was piss poor at
best. You know, a pre-approved tweet.ved tweet, you're basically censoring your players
even after you said, I want to allow these players to not be censored.
So to me, that is incredibly inappropriate,
and I'm not a big fan of that at all.
Also, on that note, before we jump into some non-current event type of stuff
with the Iowa Football Program,
Darrell Johnson-Culianos came out with his side of the story in regards to the Iowa football
program.
And I read the entire story.
It was posted on Hawkeye Nation.
It was since taken down by the owners of Hawkeye Nation, which I find interesting as well.
And I will say this.
It has been really remarkable to see the outpour of responses from Iowa football players
talking about the injustice that's being experienced within the program.
And like I said on the Monday show, it was tough to hear initially
because I have so much respect for the program.
But now, once you get past that initial thing,
this is so wonderful to see these players speaking out
and feeling like being able to have their voice
and be able to talk and try to make change and bring change to the Iowa football program.
So I think that's incredible, except for Darrell Johnson-Culianos.
And this is just my opinion, right?
But there have been a number of players that have spoken out.
In fact, Mark Morehouse did a great job of kind of compiling what players have spoken out
from what years, basically.
And it looks like I'm going to read this real quick and then get into the DJK stuff.
2006, one player has spoken out about racial bias or other mistreatment.
2007, 5.
2008, 6.
09, 4.
10, 5.
11, 5.
12, 7.
13, 10.
14, 10.
15, 11.
16, 15.
17, 12.
18, 4.
And 19, 4.
15-11, 16-15, 17-12, 18-4, and 19-4.
So definitely, obviously, I mean, players from a wide generation of Iowa football players,
those are not all in the same four-year period.
That's a pretty big gap.
DJK falls into that earlier range, and he has often spoke about not being well-received within the program.
you know, not being well received within the program. Um, but I think personally, some of that is, um, definitely self-inflicted. Uh, you know, you, you think about what he said in his post and,
you know, if you didn't get a chance to read it, I'm sorry. Basically it was a big ode to him.
You know, he basically said he came into the program as well known and everyone knew who
he was around the city and everyone was really excited about his potential and he was supposed
to be you know some sort of savior for the program and all these things right and everyone already
started calling him djk and he had a different lifestyle and all this stuff right and the coaches
didn't like that they didn't like the fact that he was a little bit um or a bit
outgoing or much compared to what i was typically used to having so that was obviously you know his
point of view and again i do respect his point of view um i'm just going to give my point of view i
mean i've i've reached out to djk about having him on the show he said said, yes. I asked him again to make sure he was good that day. He said,
yes. When the time came, he bailed. That is my one time talking to him, right? So I don't have
a great experience with him. I'm not going to try to let that bias sway me in either way, but
that was pretty frustrating for me. And I feel like based off of what we've heard from the program, based off of the arrest,
whether or not he was involved with selling, and all the charges were dropped, but whether
or not he was involved with selling, he was still putting himself in a situation like
that.
He admits openly to drug use during his time at Iowa, and that's the only thing he really
said was his wrongdoing.
Otherwise, he basically blamed the coaches for never trusting him, never liking him, all that stuff. So I really thought
that was interesting, an interesting take by him to come out and say this. I just don't feel like
he is probably the best candidate to necessarily speak out about this. But again, if that's his
feelings, then I do want those to be heard. But I mean, I'm already seeing other Iowa players speak out against what DJK is saying.
So I just, I find that whole ordeal interesting.
I'd be interested to see what your takes are on that.
Again, I think everyone else who's speaking out has been, it's been a remarkable and a
powerful movement.
I just struggle with DJK stuff a little bit as much just because of the background with everything that happened.
But that's his side of the story,
and everyone deserves to have both sides of the story told
so you can form your own opinion on that.
That being said, though, we're going to take a quick break
and come back with our final two pieces of the show today
talking about the Skyler Bell recruitment and Iowa United TBT.
Before we do that, though,
we'll have a few quick messages from our sponsors today.
First off, we have Built Bar.
BuiltBar.com is the place to go for your protein bar.
Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes exactly like a candy bar.
All of their protein bars are covered in chocolate.
They have nut-free options and a ton of great flavors.
I actually just ordered my second box of Bilt Bars today.
I got salted caramel, vanilla, and peanut butter brownies. It's going to be delivered directly to
my door. These Bilt Bars are fantastic. The reason why, like I said, they deliver a punch in taste,
fantastic taste, high in protein, low in carbs, and low in calories. It's what you need in a
protein bar. You're not trying to get a bunch of, sorry, not low in carbs, low in calories. It's what you need in a protein bar. You're not trying to get a bunch of,
sorry, not low in carbs, low in sugars, excuse me.
You don't want to get a protein bar that's going to be high in fat,
and high in calories, all that stuff.
You want a protein bar that's going to deliver
what you need, and that's protein.
And Built Bar does that,
and they deliver it with a fantastic taste.
And like I said, it can be delivered directly to your door,
and it's very easy to do.
And right now, we have a very special promo code.
That you can use for your first order of Built Bars.
Right now.
Use the promo code LOCKEDON for $10 off your first order of Built Bars.
At BuiltBar.com
Make sure to go check them out.
They have 20 unique flavors.
You can get a variety pack of up to 3 flavors.
And believe me.
I've tried I think 10 of the 20 flavors.
And I love them all.
So make sure to check that out, BuiltBar.com.
$10 off using the promo code LOCKEDON, BuiltBar.com.
The protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
We are back for segment number three,
probably one of our quicker segments on the show today.
I would say our quickest, actually.
Two things I wanted to touch on real quick.
Skyler Bell, he goes to Taft.
He has played with Deontay Vines.
It was a foregone conclusion
that he was going to be an Iowa Hawkeye.
I would say that is no more.
He was originally going to announce his commitment
a few days ago,
or probably about two weeks ago,
and decided to push that back.
Totally get it.
Awesome for him.
Since then, he's pushed that recruitment back,
and I do not feel like Iowa is the leader at this point.
Iowa is still listed as the leader according to 24-7 Sports Composite.
This is one of the 1,000th ranked player in the nation,
150th wide receiver, 6'1", 185 pounds.
He has offers from a numerous amount of schools.
And I think the big one, though, that's coming up, the reason why I'm saying that he might not be leaning Iowa anymore,
is it sounds like there's an opportunity that he could be on his way just a little bit northeast of us in Wisconsin.
And nothing hurts more than a recruit not coming to Iowa
than them recruiting to one of our rivals, such as Big Ten.
Asher Lowe, the host of the Lockdown Badgers,
actually had a conversation with one of the recruits for the class of 2021.
I'm going to try to pull up the tweet right now.
He was talking to Wisconsin QB commit Deacon Pia Hill, and he said that the
2021 group chat has been recruiting 2021 wide receiver Skyler Bell, and some of the Badger
commit recently hopped on a Zoom call with him. Sounds like they're trying to recruit him pretty
heavily. I basically responded saying, I don't like this. And then Skyler Bell actually responded
to Asher's tweet saying on Wisconsin question mark
with a couple of those eye emojis so it is I mean I think from a wide receiver perspective Iowa does
have a ton of depth I don't know if it makes sense for Skylar Bell to go to Iowa at this point
considering the amount of depth they have but it would suck to see them lose out on a target they've
been coveting for a while and then especially to have him go to, you know, Wisconsin, but we'll obviously keep you posted as
that recruitment or as that commitment comes up and whether or not he commits to Iowa, Wisconsin,
or one of his other offers, which is, you know, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Rutgers, Virginia Tech,
Wake Forest, the list goes on and on. So that'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.
The list goes on and on.
So that'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.
And on the recruiting front, again, Jordan Oladukun is announcing his commitment, I believe, tomorrow.
So we're going to be giving you some information on that once that happens.
This is the kid who originally committed to Iowa, decommitted, and now has Iowa in his top four.
I don't know how he ends up going to Iowa at this point, but we will see what happens when he does announce his commitment.
And then finally, we talked about this on the Monday show very briefly.
I was hoping to get one of the Iowa United players on the show today, but we weren't able to make the time work.
However, Iowa United is not playing in the 2020 TBT tournament, and I think that is complete bullcrap that they are not included in the tournament. I think Matt has done an incredible job of constructing a roster that would have competed and could have won the TBT tournament.
Personally, it seems like the TBT got a little bit greedy and took bigger names.
And I would say it is more of a political thing where, you know, Iowa United doesn't have, you know,
that name power from a standpoint of a Nate Robinson or a former, you know,
big time pro player. I think, you know, having Royce White, Mike Dom,
those are huge additions. Tyrus McGee, Deontay Garrett, Peter Jock.
I mean, those are, those are some talented players.
And I think they could have won the whole thing.
But for whatever reason,
the TBT tournament decided that Iowa United was not one of the 24 best teams in the tournament.
They ranked them as 28th and subsequently were cut from the tournament
since they are moving to a 24-team tournament process.
And talking to a few of the Iowa United players, they are also frustrated by what happened.
They feel like they had a good team.
Some of the podcasts that are covering the
TBT a little bit more closely also had Iowa United as a potential one seed. So I just think there's
a big disconnect between what the TBT committee sees and what other people are seeing from this
Iowa United team. And personally, I feel like I follow a lot of the TBT teams and Iowa United
has done a fantastic job of marketing their players and getting them ready for this tournament.
And I don't know, I just think TBT really shot themselves in the foot by not having
the Iowa United in this tournament.
And we're already seeing now some of the other teams kind of take some of the pieces from
Iowa United.
Mike Dahm just signed with the Illinois House of Pain.
So we're likely going to see a few others join some other teams as well,
which is just frustrating to see.
But I'm pretty pissed off.
I was really excited to watch the Iowa United.
Even after last year losing the first round,
I felt like they put up a great fight.
And Matt came back and put together
an even better roster this season
with a couple NBA players,
a couple guys who probably could still make the NBA.
So really frustrating to see
this all play out the way it did.
But we're hopefully going to get Matt on the show to talk a bit more about what went into
that decision and what he knows about it.
But that'll be coming up on future episodes.
That'll do it, though, for our show today.
As a reminder, please make sure to check out our show tomorrow.
It's going to be a really great episode talking about the Black Lives Matter movement right
here on the Lockdown Podcast Network.
