Well, we are here with the Final Four upon us,
both in women's and men's college basketball
for the first time in a couple seasons.
We don't have the Hawkeye ladies playing in the Final Four,
which is certainly disappointing,
but should be some good games coming up this weekend coming up today on the program we're gonna talk
about what's happening on the diamond a couple of big series for the Iowa
baseball team and the Iowa softball team baseball team in first place in the Big
Ten the women on the softball side trying to build an NCAA tournament
resume and they will have an opportunity against a top 25 ranked Nebraska team
coming up this weekend over at Pearlfield. We will talk about that.
Tom Cakert is going to join us from HawkeyeReport.com.
We'll get Tom Cakert's thoughts on everything going on with the transfer
portal. And of course we begin today with the big news. As it became official,
Josh Dix and Price Sanford both will be getting their mail in Nebraska for Josh
Dix of the three
guys that McCollum was trying to bring back in the biggest way. Cooper Koch, Josh
Dix, and Price Samford. I think we had two pretty wide open swaths here. You had
the one part where Cooper Koch appeared to be the most likely. Bloodlines, dad JR
obviously that played for the Hawkeyes.
He was on the last team that made a sweet 16, 25 years ago, 26 years ago now. Oh boy,
as the years just keep stacking up. But the bloodlines, the connection, that was the one
that made the most sense. And he was the quickest to make his decision that he was going to
come back to Iowa. Josh Dix and the money that was involved for his services, they were absolutely
crazy. And you hear some of the terms of the numbers that are being thrown out there, one
and a half, over $2 million, whatever the figure is, it's a lot of money. Iowa put together
a competitive offer. I think Iowa also gave him a lot to think about but ultimately the pull of being close to home playing a Creighton and playing
Within 10 miles of your home. I think said a lot of course his mom has gone through some health issues
So there was a lot there and he'd go back to last spring
There was a lot of buzz and I had few people tell me that there was a real possibility
That they thought he was gonna end up a Creighton a year ago. That obviously didn't come to fruition, so this one shouldn't come as a surprise.
Now, it was a surprise after some of the things that we heard, and
they were just rumors and rumblings.
But about Owen Freeman after he committed to the Blue Jays,
that maybe Josh Dix didn't want to end up there.
Because of Josh Dix, along with Peyton Sanford, playing through injury a year ago,
and Owen Freeman going under the knife for a finger injury
They're gonna play together and they'll have to mend some fences if there was actually anything to those rumors
Who knows the validity but it was certainly something that was out there. So you have those components and then in the middle was Price Sanford
And this is the one out of the three
I felt,
the most conflicted, the most back and forth,
and I think heard the most different kind of things
in his recruitment.
Going back to Tuesday,
Black, he's gonna go to Nebraska.
Crystal balls are being put in,
all the projections that are out there,
that was all there.
And then we go back the other way,
and you had, he's coming home, no, he's going here, he's all there. And then we go back the other way and you had, he's coming home, no he's going here,
he's going there.
Now ultimately it proves to be Nebraska.
But Illinois was involved.
There were some other programs.
The crazy thing is with Price Sanford coming into this basketball season, I wasn't sure
where he fit.
And from what we saw during his freshman campaign, I thought there was some disappointment.
I mentioned he had a more well-rounded game at the high school level when I called his games than Peyton did.
And that freshman year left some questions.
And then they're bringing in all these small forwards and types of play the same kind of position.
Now injuries also, I think, helped out Price Ampere this year.
In the Cooper-K cop catch injury you wonder
Certainly price wouldn't be getting the same amount of minutes that he did in the back half of the season
Worked out well for him
But I've seen a lot of this and I don't want to have people take this as sour grapes
But it is reality. Oh, this will be perfect. He's going to a place
Price Sanford at Nebraska that is perfect with Fred Hoyberg and and Fred Hoyberg system
This is gonna be great for him because Fred's such a great offensive coach
well pump the brakes on that one
Put the brakes on Fred Hoyberg is this great offensive coach because if you look at him and his teams now over the last six
years at Nebraska It doesn't pick the picture of a great offensive coach because if you look at him and his teams now over the last six years at Nebraska, it doesn't pick the picture of a
great offensive coach. This year they were 65th in the country
and adjusted offensive efficiency. That's good, but it's not a lead.
Their high water mark was a year before that when they were 32nd, the only year
they made the NCAA tournament in his six seasons his other years 149th
117th 179th 190th from head Fred Hoiberg so that's what you're getting as an
offensive coach and good ones at Iowa State I get that but slow down in this
being some kind of perfect fit on top of it Fred Hoiberg is going to be in the
hot seat regardless of what happens in Vegas. And if they win the crown tournament out there, he goes into year
seven on the hot seat. One NCAA tournament, no wins because Nebraska's
never had a win in the NCAA tournament. The pressure is going to be on. And you
look at that roster for next season, you look at who's moving on, who's departing
the guys that have had some incredible seasons, Bryce Williams, Joanne Gary, and the guys that they lose, they got work to
do in the portal.
And it's going to have to be a whole heck of a lot more than Price Sanford if he's going
to save his job.
And then Price Sanford might be looking for a new destination one more time.
That is what is in front of them.
I will not wish them best of luck,
certainly not against Nebraska. Go get your bag, do your thing. So this leads back to
Iowa. And now Ben McCollum and company having to go back to the drawing board. The timing
is good. And as we hit the dead period now in college basketball, in recruiting, it's
a dead period. Now you can still make contact. The dead period is a little bit of a misnomer.
We'll talk about that more with Tom Cakert who is deep into the game of recruiting
But you can still make contact with these guys you can still set up better visits
And in fact next weekend the weekend of April 11th
Visits are back on you could have guys on campus coming in official unofficial visits that can all be happening starting next week
So you're back to the drawing board on that front too.
Now you got to figure out what you got to do. The current roster construction,
you got the Drake guys coming in, the five guys coming in that we anticipate.
Isaiah Howard has committed. Kim Manwoo has committed.
Kale Combs committed. And of course the biggest one,
one of the best players in the country. But it starts,
forget how good this dude is as committed committed and we're waiting for one more
That's Tavian Banks six foot seven wing guy. You need more shooting though. You look at this group of guys and outside of Sturtz
It's not a great shooting group. I think I was Isaiah Howard can get there just a freshman and
All of those guys likely outside of Manuel who might be your starting power forward
You still need a center and you need more shooting. Ben McCollum's talked about the
shooting component and he had teams at Northwest Missouri State that everybody
on the floor, all five players, all five positions, were guys that shot over 40%
from three during the course of the season. That is a component. They need more shooting.
And this group again, outside of Bennett Sturtz
doesn't have a ton of shooting.
You need a two guard, a combo guard, whatever it is,
you need more shooting.
Cooper Koch, that guy's gonna be able to shoot the ball well.
You have that.
And a big.
And it doesn't have to be a three point shooting big,
but there is a big.
The kid from Portland's been talked about a
lot. That's a potential fit. Aussie coming in, if Iowa can
get a visit out of him. His final five though, there's some
heavy heads that they're going to be going up against. That's
where we sit right now though, in the transfer portal. I get it.
Disappointing day, certainly for Iowa. If you thought the Dicks
or Sanford, I still think there was a better chance of Sanford
coming back, but it didn't happen.
So now the coaching staff, they move on.
We have to believe in our coaches.
You're excited about the hire.
You're excited what they're able to do.
If you just look at it as all they did is bring in five Drake guys, it's not over yet.
Portals not closed.
Work really begins now in order to shape this roster.
When you have a player like Bennett Sturtz coming in, what you're building now is to be a tournament team in year number one.
You can do that with that skill,
but you need a lot more help.
That is now the job for Ben McCollum and company.
We'll dive a little bit deeper into this
as we're joined by Tom Kaker from HawkeyeReport.com.
He joins us as we continue on the Locked On,
Hawkeye's podcast.

I'm guessing he's had a busy morning watching those message boards, et cetera.
I'm sure everyone's taking it well.
Tom, HawkeyeReport.com, part of On3Media.
How are you?
Well, at least I don't have to worry about any more drastic pun threads that have been
going on for a week.
You know what?
I'm so glad you brought that up. It made it really hard to read, didn't it? Everybody trying to outdo themselves. And for every good one there is a dozen.
There's a womp-womp.
You know, you missed the mark.
But anyway, I think we're done with those, you know, the Price-Sanford thing going to
Nebraska.
So what we expected, you know, I think everybody's kind of, you know, we're not going to be able
to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it.
We're going to be able to do it. We're going to be able to do it. We're going to be able to do it. We're going to be able to do it. We're going to Nebraska. So what we expected, you know, I think
everybody's kind of understood that price was probably going to Nebraska for several days and
that Josh Dix was probably going somewhere else because somewhere else had a pot of gold at the
end of it. And plus, he's going to be close to home. As we know, his mom's
had health issues and he would want to be close to home. So now he and Owen Freeman
are back together at Creighton.
When your colleagues, and I know that you respect them over there, Callahan and Sippl
and the crew, when they put out that, what do you call them, a crystal ball or whatever
that he's headed to Nebraska headed to Nebraska. Um,
that seemed like they had pretty good info and their info was right on.
So like you say, I talked to Robin to Robin Washington.
Is that how you say his name? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Robin and I are good friends and we had, we had been talking.
So just kind of hearing the same things that he was probably headed to
Nebraska.
So now Iowa turns the page and then McCollum gets to work
We got the Drake guys coming in of course Bennett starts the headliner
And I think at times we need to pause and reflect on that they got the number one or number two player in the whole portal
that's been in there at this point and
I think there's so many people that have just glossed over that fact. When you talk to people, industry people, people that know basketball and know how things
very well could translate, what have you heard about Sturtz making this move to the Big Ten
in Iowa?
Yeah, when they moved up in competition, when they played against the high major programs,
they did pretty well.
They really did.
I mean, they beat K-State, they beat Mizzou. I mean, they've beaten Big 12.
And what, Florida State? Yeah.
Yeah. I mean, they've beaten some high major programs. So I think this is the ultimate test.
And it's probably one of those things where, you know, as a coach, I'm sure McCollum just looks at it and says,
look, we took this kind of D two players and we moved them up a level to Drake and we won
30 games. Um, I'm going to bring a bunch of these guys along with me and see if we can
do it again. And I don't know. Well, we're gonna find out if this grand experiment
is gonna work where you just keep bringing these guys up.
But it's, you know, I'm not gonna just say it won't work.
I'm gonna be really interested.
It's a great case study.
And if the system is just something
that's gonna be able to work at all the levels.
Have you been able to glean anything
from perhaps some of McCollum's next targets if you will? Trent thinks they need a five, I agree,
needed two, another shooting guard. Do you have any names Tom that they might be, you know,
kicking the tires on, anything like that out there yet? The kid from Portland that they're trying to get involved with. You know,
I did, and this sent the message boards off the edge, of course, because where they live. But,
you know, a friend of mine shared with me that, you know, a kid at D2 level down in Missouri got
a 6'9 kid who was a really good player, averaged like 17 and eight last year.
He's entered the portal and Iowa at least called up and kind of kicked tires on him
a little bit yesterday.
So we'll see what happens to him.
His name's Andrew Young and he's a pretty talented kid, but I don't know if they're
going to go after him, but I just shared it.
And of course everybody
went to the conclusion that oh now they're just they can't get any players so they're just going
to the D2 kids and I'm like well but it starts with a D2 kid you know um it worked out okay for
him so we'll see uh I I think this is going to be I've I've just kind of told people um you know
written about it it's just like it's going to be a work in progress putting this roster together.
It's, it's, it's a little bit different doing it at the Iowa level than it was
the Drake level, you know, you've just, you've got some resources that maybe you
didn't have, but you're also competing in a different way for players than you
were probably to get kids to come to Drake
So it's just it's different. It's more of a financial thing. So
You've just it's a different process that I think McCollum and his staff are kind of learning about and
That's no one was retained from the previous staff, I don't think there is kind
of maybe familiar or comfortable or understanding of how this works. I'm not saying that that's
the case, but it's just, it's kind of something you have to learn how to do, I think, dealing
with the new realities of college basketball.
Is the, I keep hearing about the Portland kid. Is it Oakman?
Isn't it Rapp? That was his name. Austin Rapp? Yeah. Got Clemson, Michigan.
Oh he's an Aussie. And he's an Aussie. Yeah, 6'10 kid. Can shoot it well from the
outside. Maybe not a great inside presence but a more diverse skill set.
And would arrive with three years of eligibility.
That is good too.
Hey, Tom, it's the dead period through Thursday now.
So that started yesterday.
That just means that there's still contact,
there's still phone calls.
They can set visits up for next weekend, right?
Is that what, explain the dead period again.
We need a refresher sometimes.
Yeah, they just can't have guys on campus, typically quickly and they can't go out to places and everything but your you know, the phone calls are still going on
With with the thing. I don't even know if any of this really applies with a portal at all
That's a tight score recording that you can't do any of that stuff because a portal just seems like it's a life
I don't ever know one of the interesting things that I didn't realize until the
other day, um, and I shared this on our site, um, last night, that there's a
lot of these places are there, there seems to be a real rush to get things
done because April 7th is when that house settlement is supposed to be
finalized.
So they want to get everything in before that
happens because the Wild West is still in effect until that happens. So you're seeing
a lot of schools try to get these deals finalized. That's why you're seeing some of these inflated
prices right now, guys, is because they've just got... there's there's money to spend and they're gonna try it and they feel like they can do it and now once the house
goes in effect then there's more scrutiny to the money to the endorsement
deals the NIL that I think is gonna get challenged right away in court but it
just you know the fair market value stuff. But if you do like, things are kind of done now
where it's kind of wink, wink, nudge, nudge, NIL or whatever.
If you do those things, it's gonna count against
that 20.5 million and schools don't want that taken away.
You know what I mean?
It's gonna count against it.
So if you're doing like, hey, we're doing this kind of funky deal over
here where we're giving this kid a million dollars, then you're down to 19.5
according to what this thing is supposed to do. No more news disappointing from
the Hawkeye front, but not for Raina Harmon as she gets the head coaching job
at Florida Gulf Coast program that's and we think of Dunk City, but that women's
program has been pretty good down there.
Also that did they have a coach recently leave for the WNBA
from Florida Gulf Coast, but aside,
Raina that's going to be a blow for Iowa losing her.
One of the top recruiters, but good for Raina Harmon.
Yeah. I'm super happy for Raina.
She's a really, a really good person.
And, and I was really fortunate to keep her for as long as
they did. And I'm happy that she's getting this opportunity to be a head coach and have her
own program and she's earned it and she's ready for it.
But now you got an opening on that staff and I wonder if they're going to, you know, maybe
they promote Taniya Davis, we'll see.
Maybe there's, you know, I think you have to have some diversity on the staff after
this.
So, you know, I think you're going to have to hire an African American assistant.
But you know, maybe there's somebody that I'm thinking of from the program that's history
that's out there coaching that would fit that profile.
But tonight Davis is on the staff. She's been there coaching that would fit that profile. But tonight Davis is on
the staff. She's been there for a couple of years. I wonder if maybe they'll elevate her
and give her a bigger opportunity moving forward.
Did you just back to the mid for just a second? Did you somebody just text me to ask about
Dix's money? Do you know how much he got Tom?
Don't have any idea. I saw somebody suggest it was over two million.
I don't know that that's true.
But it's so wild with all those things
because I know Josh real well.
And Josh is one of the quietest kids
I've ever covered in my entire life.
I mean, he is just,
and so everybody's saying,
oh, I think he's doing this or all, you know,
the last three days, at various points, he was going to Illinois, Indiana. He was coming back to Iowa. He was
going to all these different places. I'm like, you guys, if you're doing this, that means
that nobody knows what the heck this kid's doing. Just let him make a decision. He's
gonna, he's, he's really quiet. Um, and I, I always wondered if he'd just come back to Creighton just because it made sense.
They made a run at him last year.
He was still at Iowa.
They were kind of just kind of floating some things out to him trying to entice him last
year.
So it makes sense that he's going to go close to home being near his family too.
You had an opportunity yesterday to watch 15 minutes or
so football practice.
I saw some good stretching, apparently, um, hunting, hunting,
bunting and stretching.
Uh, did you glean anything?
Uh, I think maybe Trent and I biggest takeaways, just how big
Hunter is, um, he's a big dude as in certainly chuck it a little bit.
Um, what did you see Tom?
Yeah, boy, he's got some zip on the ball too. Um, you know, he is,
he's pretty impressive. Um, you know, Kronowski, um,
he's probably about six to put place, you know, he's, he's, I wouldn't say,
stocky, but thick. It's the right word. Yeah.
He's just got a sturdy kind of frame to him. There's no frailty to him. So
that was interesting to me. Yeah, and restocking was punting really well. He was punting it up
into the ceiling. How about that? That's what they do every time.
10 and 2, baby. After that.
We're just going to give you 20 minutes and
Five of it is stretching and uh about 13 of it is planting
So yeah, here's your starting quarterback dropping back, but that'll be it, but he can't throw right?
Yeah
Uh kirk could never change right? He's
Yeah, at least he gave you a little carrot. Yes. Absolutely a little taste little taste and you continue to chase that carrot down the hall.
With that, is it crazy to say that the wide receiver room is deep?
I don't know if it's good, but it's at least deep for the first time and maybe a half decade?
Yeah, they've got some depth there.
And we'll find out if anybody emerges
um, I I kept one of the things I said yesterday as I
As i'm watching some of those guys kind of do do some of those things out there. I was like
We see any guys out there that could catch 50 balls in a season because we haven't seen that in a while
Yeah, you know, I I just don't know. Um
Sam phillips was out there and he did work with at least one rep with the ones.
He's diminutive.
He's a little small on the small side, but...
And I think it was Brown that actually threw the pass that made its way to X, right?
The Brown to Phillips connection.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I'm... Maybe he's the guy. Jacob Gill had a nice little catch too.
Seth Anderson was out there. I was just, you saw some of the guys that, and you think, boy,
there's, you know, I didn't even mention Reese Vanderse, but I mean, that's another guy that,
maybe he's, he's that guy. But the bottom line though, I think they've got more weapons for
Tim Lester to use this year, and that's probably a good thing. They need that. They need to have
more weapons in the passing game. I didn't see any slow mash, so I'm still waiting. We'll see
if that happens. Good stuff. Tom Kanker at HawkeyeReport.com

on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes
your first listen every day.
So as we wrap things up,
we're gonna take a look at the diamond,
but a quick story for you.
So I read all the comments over on YouTube,
all the reviews that you put out there on the different accounts,
if it's Apple Music, whatever it is, and really do appreciate them.
Now, the one star ones, right?
We'd like a little more five stars, a few of those would be okay,
but that aside, and somebody on YouTube in the comment the other day
had mentioned the poster back in my home office down in the man cave of BJ Armstrong Roy Marble Ed Horton I said
Trent you're too young and don't know I'm in my mid 40s and if you're new to
the program and I know there's a lot of people that have been jumping on here
and thank you for all of you newbies that have been with us here lately.
Iowa basketball was it and that was those are my guys right so my first real vivid memories I have bits and pieces of memories of George Raveling nothing of Lute I was only three when he departed
but a little bit of Raveling more than anything I just remember my grandpa complaining about his
sweatsuit we've come full circle on that one that That was a long time ago, the mid eighties.
But that was the first season, 86, 87, the run to the elite eight
that I really remember a ton of that season.
And when it came to that UNLV game and hearing so many people's different
stories, I remember it so well because I just moved.
My bedroom had just been moved to the basement when my little sister was born a year before.
So I was alone.
And as the game was falling apart for the Hawkeyes
and being even as a seven-year-old,
baffled about what they were doing,
why they were slowing things down,
why this team that had been so good
at pushing the pace all year long,
suddenly trying to go four corners
and seeing that 18-point lead dissipate and ultimately
losing in the final minutes.
I remember bawling, running downstairs to my bedroom, and my mom coming downstairs,
and my mom rubbing my back
as my head's buried in the pillow,
crying.
My mom saying, it's alright Trent,
Roy, Ned, and BJ, they're just sophomores. They'll make a final four. Well of course that never happened and here we are
nearly 40 years later and they have never been close to a final four since.
Ben McCollum, prove my mom right, Please. So I don't have to have that little
bit of angst against my mom. That's always in the back of my mind. Uh, one final thing
is, uh, we get ready to wrap up here. Big weekend on the diamond for both the softball
and the baseball teams. So the softball team, they get top 25 right Nebraska Huskers come
in 26 to nine on the season of Pearl field that'll start on Friday night followed up by game Saturday I'm gonna go the game on
Sunday that'll be a two o'clock first pitch or that one I'm looking forward to
seeing the Iowa softball teams been a long time since I've been there taking
my daughter and our softball team we're gonna be going over to the game on
Sunday after we play on Saturday in Iowa City at a tournament well actually in
North Liberty so looking forward to, an opportunity for this Iowa team,
certainly to make a strong push up, have that great win against UCLA.
I'll currently rank number 49 in the RPI rankings, 209 record though, against Quad 1.
So need to build on that resume, and there'll be a big opportunity to do that,
certainly this week.
Three and four record in the Big Ten after getting swept last weekend by Wisconsin work to be done to stay in the back half. And if
they could win this series this weekend and even take a game, you're feeling
good. You take two out of three, you're in really good shape. That would be a
really quality victory on the softball diamond over to baseball. In fact, it's
going on right now as we record Iowa Northwestern Iowa with an early lead
against the Wildcats in game one. They've had moved that schedule around a little bit because of the weather.
But another road series, another chance against Northwestern,
not a great team.
Now another road midweek game against a bad Milwaukee team this week before the
Huskers come to town for baseball then next weekend,
the weekend of the 11th through the 13th.
So that's what's coming up on the diamond and the the teams this the teams this spring, it was a little something extra to root for.
Not a bad thing. We got a lot of football we need to dive into. You know,
we're kind of behind in our football conversations because of everything that's
been happening, not only with the coaching change,
but with it, the transfer portal,
