Well, we got basketball going tonight, the debut of Ben McCollum squad.
We will take a look at the matchup against Elverill Fulgaris's old team, Robert Morris,
and a couple of things to keep an eye on this evening with the Hawkeyes and Robert Morris.
Of course, we will continue to break down the football side of things, a look back at the women's
basketball matchup as they open up the season with a convincing win as they pulled away in the second
half of that one. David Eicholt is going to join us from hawkeye insider.com. David was there for
the player press conferences earlier today. We'll get his perspective on that and talk some
basketball. But we begin today with some talk about what we heard from Kirk Farrants today.
Now a week ago, the hullabub that came out of Bill Parker saying that they were well funded
and the duck bands that took that as some kind of slight. A very sensitive fan base, I think we
you're learning after that was taken as a slide after he woke he waxed
poetically about the football team but just how good they were for two minutes
and you take six words and turn it into what they did but that aside uh kirk today
and it's many of the hallmarks that you anticipate you know from iwa football many of the
things that iwa has to do this is what he talked about in this football game he was asked
about the parallels going back to the indiana game and we played the would you
showdo game in that one. And what could have been if Iowa just completes a scream pass and
beats Indiana in that one. Alas, we are here. We are what your record says you are as Iowa sits
at six and two as opposed to seven and one. But one of the things that he talked about is
Indiana doesn't beat themselves. And if he said the same thing about Oregon, if you're going to
leave the door open for them, they're going to walk right through it. And that is the case in this one.
You know, you go through and you look at this matchup with Oregon. And this team is immensely
talented. His team has speed up and down the roster. They're built differently in some ways than
Indiana, but there are a lot of similarities. And you look at the quarterback position of what
we see now to Dante Moore this year. I go back to that Indiana Oregon game from earlier this
season. You saw on that one that Dante Moore in that game, he was six, six times. And I think
that's going to be one of the keys to this one is I was going to have to make it uncomfortable
for Dante Moore. We saw that happen for Iowa in their matchup against who.
Hoosiers.
You know, they had Mendoza as out of sources.
He's looked really all season long for that Indiana team, and they did it by dialing up
pressure.
One thing we've learned also about this Iowa team is, for ever reason, they're much,
much better than they've been in the past.
They're blitzing more, and they're doing it more effectively than they've done in the
past.
But with what Oregon does, and they do it a little less conventional, even than Indiana.
Indiana, a lot of RPO's.
You're going to see the same thing out of Oregon, but so much of what, or
and does is predicated on running the football.
And they're a team that is definitely about playing a physical brand.
If you have this thought that, oh, here's this flashy team with their uniforms, this flashy
squad that comes in with all the field night money and the Nike money and on and on and on,
and it's all flash and no substance, that's not how this program's been built.
It's been built with physicality.
It's been built by running the football.
And if that is your thought process, now this is not a Mike Leach type team.
That's just chucking around when you think spread.
I know a lot of people that kind of your mind goes that direction.
That is not the case with this Oregon squad.
You look through some of the numbers, too, and they are absolutely incredible this season.
Number nine, in the country in total offense, ninth rest offense, the ninth best rush offense in the country, fourth in past efficiency.
Fifth in scoring, they're averaging 41.3 points per game.
Well, it might be all offense.
No, that's not the case either defensively.
They're fourth in the country in total defense.
They are first in the country and passing yards allowed.
And we know Iowa has had some issues throwing the football again this season.
Scoring defense.
They're giving up 13 and a half points per game.
Turnover margin tied for 22nd.
I mean, you're trying to look for any kind of wards, right?
Any thing at all that you can look at?
I guess there's one thing.
It's a red zone defense.
Every time a team's got into the red zone this year, they've scored a touchdown.
However, teams haven't got to the red zone.
very often. So many times we look through, we're trying to find, you know, that where can you
thread the needle? Where can you find that spot that makes sense for Iowa to be able to win the
football game? And this is difficult to do when you go against this Oregon squad. They, for the most
part, don't beat themselves. They make the plays that are in front of them. They got a host of
running backs. They're really, really good across the board. Punting, Iowa's punting has not been
very good this year. And they're 20th in the country.
in that putting.
So it just, it's on and on and on.
Kane Wichin has to have a big game.
We'll talk more about that as a week certainly commences and get into it.
But one of the things that jumped out going back and watching kind of one of those
fast highlight videos is the ability as I went back and watched the, you know, 30 minute
breakdown of the Indiana Oregon game.
Again, kind of refreshing my memory throughout the off week and getting to Dante more.
I think that's at the top of the list for what Iowa needs to do in this one if they are
going to pull off the upset.
Now, the environment Saturday at Kinnett, it'll be special.
It always is.
Kinnick Stadium, every day, as you've heard me say, I still get those chills walking in every single time.
The excitement, the buildup, the anticipation, everything.
And boy, I mean, doesn't this week feel like it's the longest week ever?
I mean, coming out of the heels of a bye week and it's just, I'm just ready to watch this team play football again.
You know, I was playing at such a high level.
But, you know, Kirk was asked that at the press conference.
He was asked about the environment and the buzz leading into the game.
And, you know, he talked about how rare it is, how special it is to have these kind of chances.
We talked yesterday.
Every day, as you know, we talked a little bit about just the importance of this football game
and why it's as big as I was had in such a long time.
Yeah, we had number three versus number four, four years back with Iowa, Penn State.
Penn State that ended up that season, what, seven and six?
And we know the wheels fell off for Iowa after that, back-to-back losses,
including losing to Purdue.
as they ascended up towards the top of the pole that season.
This one feels different because it's also November.
And it's November and that means that there's everything still on the table.
I mean, you've played yourself to this spot now where you've got to be perfect.
You got to do everything in order to make that happen.
However, when you go through and look at the opportunity that this squad has,
what's in front of them, I think that also takes it to another level.
And it is special.
And Kirk said this.
He said he knows that Oregon's going to be ready, knows the crowd's going to be ready,
need to make sure that we're ready.
And I don't think that's him saying,
you know, that there's been guys
overlooking this week or guys that have not been doing the right thing
because with the leadership of the squad,
what we've seen out of this group this season,
that would be surprised.
It's just so un-Iwa football like to do that.
But he knows they got to be ready
and they got to make some breaks
and they have to have some things happen
and probably have to have a couple of bounces go their way
if they're going to pull it off.
I say it all the time.
And,
in an upset.
When you're playing a game like this,
you don't have to be perfect.
People talk about perfect.
Perfection is not reality.
And certainly in football,
playing perfect is not a reality.
But you have to play clean.
I was very good keeping the penalties down.
You go back.
The number of points that they gave Penn State in that game.
The seven points that they gave to Indiana after the interception at the beginning of the game,
first drive of the game, picked off 7-0.
Look like, oh boy, here's the route is on.
what they did at the end of the half in each of those games.
Obviously, the block kick that went back for a touchdown by Penn State,
but even go back to that final minute of the game against Indiana.
I mean, you don't wrap up, you don't make a play
that should have been a shorter gain.
Instead, a guy breaks through, gets an extra 12, 15 yards.
Then you get a personal foul on top of it, and you give him three free points.
And a game that was 13, 13, 13, late in the fourth quarter,
those are the things he can't do.
Iowa, again, doesn't have to be perfect,
but you've got to be clean.
Those are the kind of things
and the kind of mistakes
Iowa cannot afford to do
against this Oregon team.
Oregon, though,
go through and take a look at the duck.
Mentioned the numbers that are incredible.
And again, we're trying to find any kind of holes
works with this team.
Oklahoma State,
if not the worst,
one of the worst power for teams that are out there.
Montana State, a good FCS program.
That's who they open up the season against.
They want it Northwestern.
They wanted Oregon against Oregon State, who's terrible.
The great environment against Penn State,
but we're learning that Penn State team,
certainly much different than what we thought.
The Lost Indiana, and then they beat Rutgers in Wisconsin.
So people that want to poke holes in the Iowa resume
who they beat, and I think you can poke holes in a lot of programs
that are out there on the fringes of the top 25 Lake Iowa
and say who have they beat, who's Oregon beat?
This is a talented team.
This is a team that has dudes up and down the roster.
Kirk talked about a couple of their freshman defensive linemen
and look in the part already.
I said it's like the Dodgers of the Yankees.
But another part that he brought up, that's important too.
Not just about the talent, but it's how they're coached.
And I think there's a lot of respect that he has for Dan Lanning
of what he's done with this program.
As we open up the show, this is a physical team.
This is a team that is going to show up or the fight.
I was got to be ready.
think that they will.
A couple final things here for you.
As we look back at the press conference, some news and notes.
We got David Eichold coming up here in just a moment before we get into some basketball
talking a whole lot more here at the end of the program.
You go through and you look at these upsets in the past and how Iowa's been able to pull them off,
got to play well.
Got to get those breaks and you got to hang around.
You'll hear this week, Iowa's got to start fast.
that's not necessarily what it is.
All Iowa has to do is hang around.
Now, I was not a team that has to in these upset games be playing from ahead.
It helps, but it's not always the case.
You go back to the upset against Michigan.
You go back to some of the big ones that they've had.
That's not always been the case, but just hang around.
Keep your head above water, get into the second half, and then, you know, weird things can happen in Kinnick Stadium.
We come back.
David Eicholt's going to join us from 24-7 sports.
He talked to the players at the press conference today.
A couple of news and notes, including the health of Mark Garnowski,
where's the Hawkeye quarterback as we get ready for the matchup against Oregon?
Icold joins us next, Locked on Hawkeyes.
Well, the NBA is back and there's no better place to get in on the action than Fandul,
the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
Even if you miss the start of the game or want to ride a hat hand,
Banduel has live bets on everything.
We'll score next to fourth quarter
comebacks. Plus, you can combine

Into a same game parlay for a shot at a bigger
payout. You've heard me talk about same game
parlayes, how fun they are, and a chance
to take a little and turn it into a lot.
Now you can do it live in the game.
See how things are unfolding and see
if you can put together that big same game
parley. It keeps every game exciting,
especially when your team's making that late push.
And not just the NBA, they got you covered Iowa.
currently a six-point underdog against Oregon.
He can put together a parlay.
You can bet on the Hawkeyes to win on the bunny line,
whatever you would like on the Fanduel app.
Right now Fandual is giving new customers

Let's get David Eichold in here,
Hawkeye Insider.com.
He joins us 24-7 sports.
David Trent and Ken,
thank you for coming on.
Always good to talk to you.
We'll get to the Oregon game,
which just has a massive feel.
It really does.
I can't wait.
We'll get to basketball mince tonight,
but let's start with ladies.
They were first after all last night.
What did you see from?
Jan Jensen's squad as they made their first, I guess, real start of 25, 26 season.
Your thoughts on what transpired last night of Carver?
You know, I think it raised a few questions about what this team can be,
but I'm also not going to be the person that overreacts after one game, right?
I think this team is going to be very front court heavy,
and I think there's going to be a lot of production from there.
I was pretty much blown away by Ava Hayen.
I knew she was going to take a step forward, but, you know,
I know that they didn't have the most size they were playing against,
but Hain was demanding the basketball in the post.
She had about three or four go-to moves.
She was very aggressive on the glass.
I thought Hannah Stolke did a nice job in that second half.
And if she makes, you know, a three or two a game or can at least showcase that she
can be a little bit of a threat, I think that's going to open some things up.
A little bit worried about the turnovers, 24 turnovers.
I know that Southern threw a lot of different pressures at them, some full court presses.
You know, when you are going against a team that has,
nine freshman sophomores like Iowa, they were trying to, you know, force those turnovers and
get them out in transition. And they were able to do that a few times. But we saw last year,
man, when Iowa turns the ball over that they don't win many games, we saw, even though they
had Lucy Olson, who was obviously a terrific player in her own right, I was going to need two
or three ball handlers to step up to the plate and be able to, you know, go against some of that
pressure. But I think it has potential to be a top 25, top 20 team. I think it's going to be a very
good team. The three-point shooting wasn't great. But again, Jan Jensen doesn't seem worried about that.
But I think there's going to be a lot of talent on this year's team as well. But it's going to be
one of those things, man, where who's going to be that go-to player? You had Lucy Olson last
year. You had Caitlin Clark several years before that. You had Megan Gustafson. You had Kathleen
Doyle. You have Sam Logic, Ali Disterhoff. Who's going to be that go-to player when you need
a bucket? I think there's a couple people that have potential to be. But I'm very curious how
this next couple weeks sort of develop.
Let's jump over to the men's side.
We'll get our first look at them tonight against Robert Morris and NCAA tournament team from a year ago.
But one of the best players is now on Iowa with Elverro Fulgaris.
And a couple of that, all five starters gone from last year's team.
What are you looking for here?
Iowa favored by 22 and a half against Bobby Moe.
Defense, defense and defense, right?
I'm really, I'm really interested to see the lineup combinations because I think right now Ben is still trying to figure out what the best way to attack opposing.
teams are. We know that Iowa did not shoot the ball well from three point range and there are two
secret scrimmages that, let's face it, man, they're not secret scrimmages. We know everything
gets leaked out at this point. Very curious how, you know, is freshman Tate Sage can be a big
part of this team? Because he really impressed me throughout the summer. I think he played
great in Iowa second secret scrimmage game. How are the defensive rotations going to be cleaned up?
How much pressures are going to be on Bennett's third at that starting point guard spot? Are they going
to be able to move him off the ball.
But I'm just overall really intrigued about the system that Iowa is going to come out and
be aggressive in.
And I'm very curious how the crowd's going to be because, you know, I think Ben McCollum's done
the right thing behind the scenes.
He's taking about every media request as far as I'm aware of.
He's in the, you know, student section during football games.
He's done countless public appearances.
I don't know how much coffee that man has drank and somehow more than me.
And that's an accomplishment in its own right.
But for him to kind of do everything right behind the scenes, how.
well attended is this game going to be what's the support going to look like and how much work
does you still have to do to fill carver back up despite having a new player a new system how many
people are going to sit there and say you know what we'll believe it when we see it uh so i think
there's a ton of intrigue about this about this fierce team and i'll be honest man i don't know
if we're really going to know what this team is until halfway through january i just think that
this team's going to get better as year goes long but we'll be able to figure out what they
actually are January, February.
Yeah, I think that's a fair way to put it.
Let's fast forward to Saturday.
Not that I don't want to gloss over tonight, I don't.
I'm looking forward to that and talking about it tomorrow because we'll watch
you on the Big Ten network.
But this just has a massive feel at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.
So much still to play for Iowa.
Not easy by any means, obviously, the next two weeks, and then Sparty and then
Rayola lists Huskers squad to bring down the curtain on the regular season.
these next two weeks, but this one in particular, because I think USC, and I know it's going
out west, and that doesn't bode well for the Hawks, but I'm not sure sure there, you know,
that they're as good as some people make them out to be, and I was one of those people before.
But I still think this Oregon squad is really good. I do. The win at Penn State at the end of
September was, you know, one of those all-timers, one of the better games of the year. Where
are you on this Oregon team, tough spot, but I think a very winnable game for Iowa, David,
I called? I think they're going to have a shot, but I also think that Dan Laining is the top
three coach in college football. I think he's a maniac, and I think he's one of the best
young coaches there is. And keep in mind the last time Iowa played Oregon, Kirk was coaching
O'L at Iowa. Dan Laining was three years old, might I add, so for some perspective there, I think
it's a really talented team. I love Dante Moore. I think he's one of the more explosive dual-threat
quarterbacks in college football. I don't know if he knows how to protect himself on the run. I think
that's going to be a big thing he'll have to transition to whenever he goes to the NFL
or if he comes back for another season, I don't think he should, but that's going to be a big deal
for him. I think given the way the weather and everything is going to work out too, this is going to be
an ugly Big Ten style football game. Like the winds are expected to go up to 25 mile an hour
gust. It sounds like it's going to be a rainy game. And I think if you're an Iowa fan,
you're going to, you know, I think they're going to love it. I think there's going to be a lot of
people that are going to be excited to hammer bushlights against cans against their head and
and do the tarps-off thing in the student section.
I think the atmosphere is going to be electric.
But I think it's the biggest home game in four years,
probably since that Penn State game,
at least in going into that sort of feel.
We know what Penn State ended up not being that great.
We know Iowa had a decent year,
but didn't live up to their own expectations
after what happened with Purdue the following week.
But this has a very similar feel.
And I do think if you're Iowa,
you're looking at the ranked losing streak against ranked teams,
you're looking at the national narrative.
how do you kind of overcome that?
How do you kind of turn the page?
You knock off one of the biggest brands and most talented teams in college football.
And I think landing knows, I think Oregon knows, this is not going to be an easy game.
But obviously, Iowa's going to be thinking the same thing.
But I do think Kinnick's going to be a pretty decent advantage too.
And I think it's an ugly, ugly game.
And that's exactly what Iowa wants it to be.
Final 30 seconds, quick hit on Mark Kornowski.
You know he had an opportunity to talk with him.
Where is he health-wise?
Yeah, he says not 100%.
but it's the best he's stall in several weeks.
And I'll be honest with you guys,
how many players are really 100% at this point in here?
This is November football.
Like Mark Grinowski said he's not going to shy away from running the football.
We know he runs like a fullback, as Tim Lester said, like last week.
Grinowski is a gamer.
He's going to be locked in.
I'm not worried about his health whatsoever.
David I Cole 24-7 Sparts Huckai Insider.com.
David, good to catch up with you.
Thank you for jumping on.
Appreciate it.
Appreciate you guys.
Take care.
Have a good week.
Yep.
You're the same.
David I. Cole, as we check in on Iowa, men tonight.
You said 22 and a half point favorite.
22 and a half.
Bobby Moe, 730, Big Ten Network.
Will they be in, will the Big Ten Network be on site?
Do you know for this one?
Not sure.
We'll see.
We'll tune in at 730 and we'll find that out.
Thanks as always to David I Cole for joining us and giving us some good insight
on to the player interviews, including the health of Mark Bernowski.
And he will be needed on Saturday against Oregon.
Talk to a little bit.
basketball there. Let's get back into it. Iowa men back in action. A recap of what we saw.
How concerned should we be with the Iowa women? The turnovers, they built up in game number one.
We're talking hoops as we come back. Locked on Hawkeyes.
College football is here and we all couldn't be more excited. The tailgates, that might be a little chilly, a little rain.
That's all right on Saturday. The rivalries, the energy in the stands. There's certainly nothing like it.
and nothing like at Kinnick Stadium.
But let's be real.

Well, as we look to tonight on the men's basketball team in action, want to take a look
back at what we saw last night as the Iowa women got win number one of the regular season as
they picked up the win against Southern. Now, pretty uneven at times. Listen to a lot of this game
on the dry back. In fact, I was in Iowa City yesterday and broadcasting some
state volleyball. So I had a chance to listen to the radio broadcast and hearing from
Rob Brooks. And as he described the action, I think the big storyline is inside.
David Hayden, what she was able to do, 21 to 14, just so smooth with the basketball, the
understanding. And we know the growth potential. Any post player that plays under Jan Jensen,
you're going to have an ability to probably become all Big Ten, potentially become an all-American.
and now just as a sophomore.
We saw it at the end of last year for Ava Hayden.
And the hype coming into the season, it is real.
Anna Stulke, knocked out a three-pointer, wanted to see that, definitely got to see that.
The question is about the turnovers.
And you go through and you look at the 23 turnovers in the game.
However, I think the great news about that is Chichat only had one, seven assists against one turnover in the game.
I mean, if she can play at that level, Southern Press more.
then they're going to see.
Chit-chat, right.
If she can be that one person, that one-player press breaker,
that's going to open up a ton.
You know, I will really struggle at times last year
against full-core pressure and showed it again.
Chit-chat, though, and her numbers,
just one turnover in a game like that, I think, says a ton.
Got to be able to shoot the basketball a little bit better.
I think that's another little takeaway from there.
We'll get another look at this team a little bit later on in the week.
On the other side, we got the men going tonight against Robert Morris, Iowa, a 22 and a half point favorite in this one.
Alvara Fulgaris, his old team, Robert Morris said he played with a year ago.
Remember, they pushed Alabama to the brink in the NCAA tournament in the opening round in a 215 matchup.
And Fulgaris, he was right there.
Looked like a guy that belonged.
And that's the hope that he's going to be a guy that belongs all season long with this team.
Called him the X Factor, probably going to be a little bit weird for him, I'm sure, though.
all five starters departed for Robert Morris still.
A lot of familiar faces that are going to be there.
What I want to see out of this team, first of all, it's the shooting.
The two secret scrimmages, they didn't shoot the ball very well in either one of those games.
If they can shoot with the lights on, a little bit better.
And then what the defense looks like, you know, what we see on the defensive end of the floor
and just the improvements that we hope are going to be happening there.
The other part, who's going to be that fifth starter?
If you heard the interviews and every day as you did, a couple of weeks,
weeks back when I was at Iowa Basketball Media Day.
You heard me.
And Bennett Sturts, let us in a little secret.
They don't know who's starting the game until just a couple minutes before they go out
on the floor.
Something different, something the coach McCollum does.
He does it to keep guys engaged.
But that'll be interesting to see who that fifth starter is going to be.
When the game notes came out the other day, they did not have a starting lineup.
That was listed in there.
So who is going to be that fifth starter?
We'll be keeping an eye on it.
We got you covered.
We'll have a rapid reaction podcast on coming your way on Tuesday.
evening into Wednesday morning,
depending on what time we get all that done
and get it finished up because, well,
before that, I got
6U basketball. We're watching my little guy out there.
I'll play it some hoops. So we'll be a little bit late,
get into the game, but thankfully, it's on BTN,
have the DVR set to go, and we'll have a rapid reaction
podcast coming your way into your feed after this one.
