Iowa may benefit, but Tavian Banks' extra season will be spent somewhere else, creating an intriguing twist for the Hawkeyes this season. Starting point is 00:01:05 We're also going to be joined by Elliott Clough from hawkeye insider.com. We'll get the latest on the Hawkeyes from Elliott. He was in Chicago for Big Ten Football Media Days, a lot on that. And we'll also talk about the big story of the day. And that's where we start the conversation as the high school graduating class of 2022 has been granted another year of eligibility. As we know, with the NCAA in a court battle, usually doesn't go their way, though this was not litigation or anything like that.

Starting point is 00:01:32 That was set out by a case. in Colorado that granted all athletes that just completed their eligibility, the class of 2022 for the high school ranks that these players now are eligible for another year. The big story from the Iowa perspective and the one that has been certainly talked about the most is Tavion Banks. But this is not just a basketball story or just a football story. This is across the board. And this is certainly something on the landscape that could change things very quickly in the

Starting point is 00:02:01 way that we look. There are a lot of hurdles. There are a lot of things that need to be figured out on this front, but I want to start first with Tavion Banks. As we go through the summer months and going back to the end of the season, if you remember, Tavion Banks went out after the season concluded, put out an Instagram post stating that he was going to be declaring for the NBA draft. Well, his eligibility was over.

Starting point is 00:02:26 Of course, you would anticipate that, but also that he was entering the transfer portal. And that led to a lot of questions. Was there bad blood? Nothing like that with the coaching staff or anything on that realm. Nothing that was happening there. But specifically for the side of basketball, it felt like we were going this direction, that the five-for-five was going to be granted.

Starting point is 00:02:49 It was going to be a new rule for college athletics. And because of that, in order to do that, you want to get ahead of the curb. So you saw a number of players do this at the collegiate level, mostly in basketball, where though their eligibility had concluded, they still did enter the transfer. transfer portal because that opens up now a window, not just for Tavion Banks, but for all of these players to go out there now and explore and see what else is out there. Now, for a lot of these players, so you could also come back. And with roster limits and those kind of things, that is still on the table as long as you could find a way to do that. There was nothing in this case that led to

Starting point is 00:03:23 an extra exemption being laid out where if you already have your 15 football players, you already have your 105 football players, your 15 on the basketball realm, that it will extend past that, but this is something that is in place if you have a place that has open roster space like the Iowa women's basketball team that only have, as we remember, just 11 players on that roster. That is something that definitely could be different. There are roster limits, though, across college athletics. This is not just the big sports that are out there.

Starting point is 00:03:54 This is across the board is something that changed a couple of years back with these roster limits. But as we bring the conversation back to Tavion Banks and what is happening here? So Tavion thanked at another Instagram post, Iowa for his time, his one season in Iowa. What a great year it was. One of the top scores for the team this year added a element of toughness to that team was a guy that could go get a bucket for you, a really good defender and just a guy that was solid all throughout the course of the season. On top of it, Iowa doesn't be Florida without Tavion Banks.

Starting point is 00:04:24 He was so good in that game. And there's a number of games that you can point to that the Hawkeyes don't pull out of victory, even with their horroks throughout the course of the season. and abetted sturtz, they do not get a lot of the wins this year without Tavion Banks on the team. Now, when we look at this upcoming season, Iowa has 14 players on their roster. They do have room to add one more. But as we've gone through this time and reading between the lines, as I've said to you many times before and you every dayers out there, you definitely know it. This is something where you could see that this was happening.

Starting point is 00:04:58 If this extra year of eligibility was granted for these guys that graduated from high school, four years ago that used up their four years of eligibility, that this was something where you could see that Iowa was moving on. I don't read it as any kind of indictment to Tavion Banks the way that the coaching staff thought of him. You heard nothing but glowing things from Ben McCollum and many of the other coaches of just the kind of guy that he was, what he did coming along with the group from Drake and what he was able to do in his season. I think most importantly, you hear about culture. And when you talk about team culture with Iowa, basketball, what Ben McCollum strives to do with his team. It's about that accountability and doing

Starting point is 00:05:38 all the things that are necessary to build the team up. The team culture is a big, big part of this. And I think maybe the most important because we didn't know when this was going to be handed down. It comes down here in early August, yet this thing could have been late August, could have been September. I mean, we don't know exactly when this thing was going to start. And I think more than anything, Ben McCollum, knowing that, made the decision right away and gave that knowledge to Tavion, Banks, if this happens, will help you find another home. It's just not going to be here. And it's not because they don't believe that Tavian Banks can't help them this season.

Starting point is 00:06:10 It would be silly to think for a guy that put up the season that he did a year ago and now with another year of experience and going through the rigors of the Big Ten, now for a second time that he wouldn't be an impactful player for this team. But it's again back to that culture. And for the guys that anticipated, they were going to get many of the minutes that we saw a year ago. Cooper Koch, we expected big group. out of him this season and taking a step forward. The young guys, a guy like a Trey Thompson, a Jaden Coon, Ethan Harris, players like that,

Starting point is 00:06:41 the minutes that they're going to have. What you look at for a guy like Isaiah Howard, Tate Say is just on and on and on. You have these young guys, these guys that are going to be a huge part of the future of your program and really the building blocks of what Iowa basketball is going to be. These guys have been doing the work. Since the season ended, we've seen a number of the workouts that have happened with the team throughout the course of this summer. And we have seen the guys are definitely putting in that work.

Starting point is 00:07:06 They're definitely doing the things that you hope for on that front and doing a great job of it. And you don't want to upset the apple cart. You don't want to do something that can disrupt. Not that Tavian would come in and be a malcontent, but these guys have been working together. These guys have been practicing together. These guys have been putting in the sweat equity, literally and figuratively, to make this happen. And then you bring a guy back in.

Starting point is 00:07:29 it just creates, I think, more headache than ultimately what it's worth. Here's another component. And though Tavian Banks is a great player and was excellent for Iowa this past season, I also think that Iowa looks at it and Coach McCollum and the staff look at it and say that they can replace what they got a year ago from Tavion Banks. And those young guys that we talked about and the structure and the build of this team that they're going to be fine on that front. They're going to be built differently this year.

Starting point is 00:07:54 There's no doubt about that. They're going to look different starting in the middle with a 7 foot 3, center in Andrew McKeever, what he's going to be able to do, playing big at times, with Trevin Yurok playing out there, what they have with Maniow coming back for another season, all the forwards that they have. We talk about Harris and Koch and Coon and Trey Thompson out of the young group, and there's a lot of different weapons that they can do. Individually, are any of those players going to surpass what we saw this season?

Starting point is 00:08:23 You can definitely argue that Cooper Koch can do that. I think there's a few other those candidates on the wing that definitely. could be there and do those kind of things, but that's what you look at when you're putting this together, and I believe the decision behind that. We're going to talk about that a little bit more coming up here in just a moment with Elliott Club, but it just not impacts Iowa men's basketball and Tavion Banks. There's other players that could come back this season. On the women's basketball front, there's been talk about Hannah Stolke, who has signed a pro contract. How does that go? That's going to be a different conversation. Taylor McCabe, a chat Lace de Cal from the DeWoign Register reported on Monday that that does not look

Starting point is 00:08:58 like there's a likelihood either of those players would come back. Going through a grad program is Taylor McCabe at Notre Dame and the professional assigning for Hannah Stolke, that that does not look to be a realistic possibility. Could there be a player, though, from outside the program? Again, the women's basketball program actually has a spot. And maybe the most intriguing is something we're going to tackle a little bit more tomorrow is what happens on the football side. Though all these players that we're talking about are in NFL training camps, could there

Starting point is 00:09:27 be a possibility and is there going to be another court case that is brought up to the NCAA, these guys that have signed pro contracts, they'll get cut in NFL training camps if there's a possibility of them coming back. I think of an Aaron Graves, a Caden Weechin, another year for guys like that. And if that happens, oh boy, that could be an exciting time. But in order to do that, you still have to stay under the roster limit. And that creates a headache. And then you're talking about cutting guys weeks before the semester beginning.

Starting point is 00:09:57 and the season begins, it could be a very, very sticky situation. We'll talk about that a little bit more on the football front tomorrow. Starting point is 00:12:13 I got your text about comping on and more than happy to join you again, more than happy to get you back on the radio waves. But I'm actually fresh off my bachelor party this weekend. went to Columbia, Missouri, went to a lake house with a few of my buddies, and I am feeling it today. I'll tell you that. Ah, yes, I can definitely understand that.

Starting point is 00:12:36 Well, I got a Vegas trip coming up next week, so I know I'll be feeling it. Maybe when we talk early next week, you'll be hearing that in my voice just a little bit. So what did the Bachelor party entail? Where'd you go? Yeah, so like I said, just went to Columbia, Missouri, got a kind of lakehouse down there with my buddies. We golfed a little bit. It kind of hung out.

Starting point is 00:12:56 Didn't really do a ton. Like I said, the golfing was probably the biggest thing. I also haven't played all summer. So that was probably a point for choice for activity on my part. But we made it happen. Definitely got a hard time for my friend for how awful I played the first 18. Understand that. I got a golf coming up with a tournament with my buddies coming up this weekend.

Starting point is 00:13:17 And yeah, I have only swung the sticks, I think, twice this year. And it has not gone very well. So it'll be ugly coming up on Saturday as apologies to my team. they'll have to carry me on that front. Well, the big story right now, and something I talked about at the top of the show today, Elliot, is the 5-for-5 rule

Starting point is 00:13:33 that was put in place here a couple months ago, knew it was probably eventually going to lead to that. Makes sense. Five years of eligibility, boom, very simple. But now we have the guys that just graduated. The high school class of 2022, and there's been an injunction that has been put in there

Starting point is 00:13:48 to give them another year of eligibility. That leads to the question. What about the guys that just graduated for Iowa? specifically, I think the most conversation about Tavian Banks. Just fill us in a little bit. And after what you guys have reported over at Hawkeye Insider, way back from when he announced he was declaring for the draft, we knew if that likelihood wasn't going to happen,

Starting point is 00:14:09 that he was going to be a draft pick, but also going into the transfer portal, I think we could read between the lines. If this came and it did, that Tavium Banks was not going to be a Hawkeye. Yeah, you know, right after the tournament, I asked him about it. And he said, you know, I want to be a Hawkeye.

Starting point is 00:14:26 When he made that initial post about entering the Tick Transfer Portal, he said he wanted to be a hot guy. And I think that was more so relating to the fact that, you know, we weren't really sure what the roster was going to look like going into this offseason. And if Iowa would even have a spot for them. And if they did, if this, you know, was something that was determined, say, and I have I don't know, May, we might be having a different conversation about the possibility of Tavion Banks being a Hawkeye.

Starting point is 00:14:59 But I think what this really came down to is Ben McCollum and his roster construction, because this is just like getting Pavion back. Obviously, you take it in a vacuum, but putting it together in terms of roster construction is just something that would have been difficult because there's already just a logjam with hybrids. You want to see the development. You want to see the continued development of a Cooper Cotch, of a TACCH, of a TACHA. stage and even the young guys like Ethan Harris and Jaden Coon and that just would have been difficult

Starting point is 00:15:28 with with another year of Tavion Banks and having him on the roster. It just it would have been a log dam in terms of of the fit and it's unfortunate of course I mean I'm sure all Iowa fans would have loved to get him back but it's just a situation that I don't think would have made a ton of sense I think there's somewhere out there where where he'll find a spot somebody will be very happy that they got Thayvian Banks. But just like I said, just a situation of logistics more than anything, just making it

Starting point is 00:15:58 not really work out the way maybe Iowa fans would have hoped. And they don't be Florida without Tavion Banks. They don't get to that sweet 16. And I've really changed to the complexion of Iowa basketball and what it is and the eventual run to the lead eight without him. They don't beat the Gators. And he's a very good player, but I think

Starting point is 00:16:15 you nailed it. These young guys, and you also have to just wonder, the guys that have been putting in the work here throughout the summer. And now we're going to go back and we're going to bring another guy in. It just, it leads to too much. And you also know the importance of the culture building. And it's the culture word, I think Elliot sometimes gets thrown around too much as it pertains to sports. But for Iowa basketball and specifically for Ben McCullum, it's not just lip service.

Starting point is 00:16:38 That, that camaraderie, that culture that they're building, it is incredibly important for what he does. Right. And it's not like Tavion would come in and be a locker room, you know, destroy their type of guy after. you know, I haven't been what he was and being been so important to that team. And, and, you know, Ben, since that kind of stuff out right away before you even step on, step on campus. This is just a situation of continuity and having already built something. And Ben is very particular about how things go and how he wants to build things. So it's more of a reflection of that than it is maybe on that at all.

Starting point is 00:17:17 Let's jump over to football, fresh off the Big Ten football media days last week over in Chicago. Kirk Ferrets, let's start right there. You've been covering now the Hawkeyes for a couple of years. You get to know his mannerisms the way that he kind of is being in those press conferences. What kind of mood was he in? Talking specifically about this team, Kirk, a guy that usually pretty down the middle, but he had some opinions, he had some thoughts. Just your takeaway of Kirk overall as he gets ready for your number 28?

Starting point is 00:17:45 honestly I thought it was pretty standard Kirk you know he's he he doesn't speak definitively about basically anything at this point the one thing he did speak maybe definitively about is the which is kind of funny it's a bit of an oxymoron but definitively about the uncertainty around special teams just because it's a complete overhaul in that group

Starting point is 00:18:09 from punter kicker special teams coordinator returners that that was the big question of course the offense line is going to be a bright spot. And, you know, you look into Zach Lutmer, and it's very easy to be optimistic when it comes to just another guy, another small town guy that's from the state that has elevated his game and it has a serious chance of being an All-American this year. That kind of thing, you know, and other than that, Kirk's like, we'll see. And he is a big, we'll see guy when it comes to Big Ten Media Days and it comes to even Iowa's media days. coming up here in just about two weeks, a little less than two weeks. But yeah, it was pretty standard, Kirk, you know, you ask him,

Starting point is 00:18:53 one thing that was crazy was the Tony Diaz quote. And, you know, you put that in context, and it's probably a little bit less crazy than maybe it looked on its face when I put it on Twitter. But it was, you might have to help me here. I don't have it in front of me, but it was Bob Sanders, like, tackle you, or was going to tackle you,

Starting point is 00:19:13 Marshall Yonda was going to block you, or like to block you and Tony Diaz likes to catch the ball. And he's not exactly saying that they're going to be in that same. And Tony is going to be in that same rarefied error as a Marshall Yonda as a Bob Sanders, but that he has a chance to because of that disposition and because of, you know, his desire to grab the ball and like even to put his body on the line to grab the ball in practice. So imagine what it will be like in games.

Starting point is 00:19:41 But that was probably the biggest takeaway was like in context. It's not as crazy, but it's still crazy for for for for Kirk to say something like that. And, um, you know, I, I, I, I, I, I said something about the hype train with Tony Diaz and Kirk goes, you know, I don't like, you know, I don't like hype trains. Um, so yeah, still a little crazy, but, um, that was probably the, the biggest thing, the biggest maybe out outlier from, from media days. You know, another big takeaway. And I, you know, Elliot, we've talked.

Starting point is 00:20:14 talked about this a ton. It is that defensive tackle spot. And what he was mentioned, and I think it was specifically about the defensive line as a whole, but talking about playing eight, nine, 10 guys, something in that realm. It does feel like they're still trying to figure that out. And I don't think that is a surprise by any means, but that has to be such a huge question mark for this squad, specifically up the middle. Hawthorne, he was banged up during the spring. I think you have at least a known commodity there, but who else can help? And maybe it's just as simple as that. We're going to have these guys go out there. Give us 15, 20 snaps a game. Give five different guys that opportunity to go out there, bust your ass, go out there,

Starting point is 00:20:50 play as hard as possible. And we'll see maybe one of these guys can hit and he can rely on a little bit more. But what do you say? He didn't anticipate anybody getting 500 snaps this year? Yeah, yeah, something to that effect. Maybe Bryce Hawthorne ends up there. But yeah, it's pretty much, pretty much exactly as you said it. I mean, it's still a big question. market still the possibility of rotating eight to ten guys and two of those guys being walk-ons and will Hubert loop Gaffney I it's just I mean and then you go beyond that Devon Kennedy Brad Fitzgibbon some second third year guys that you're hoping can make a leap but of course it's the same with the the defensive end position Kamari

Starting point is 00:21:30 Brown you know say up and that Joseph Anderson that that type of type of player and then of course you know you mentioned Bryce Hawthorne Kenneth Maryweather's kind of the only other guy in that same position of yeah, he's played and he's played a good amount, but he wasn't a star. And you're kind of hoping that he becomes a star this year. So, yeah, Tran, I mean, I think our guess is as good as Kirk's at this point of who plays, how well they play and how frequently they play. Well, we did not get an answer to the quarterback. And that is not a surprise.

Starting point is 00:22:05 I don't think anybody thought, you know what, we're going to go over to Chicago. We're going to get the answer. we're all looking for going to be either Hank Brown or Jeremy Hecklinsky. We do know that part of it at the very least. But after hearing Kirk a little bit, talk about the position, there's been a lot of talk from all the guys, from Tim Lester to offensive staff members, Kirk, that they say they're confident at the quarterback spot. Do you completely buy in that they're confident, regardless of Fitzbrown or Hecklinsky,

Starting point is 00:22:32 that they're going to get solid quarterback play? Oh, Trent. That's a million dollar question. That's been a million dollar. leading into the last four or five seasons. You know, I, I'm probably in the same way as I was last year of believe it when I see it. And we saw it towards the end of the season with Mark Rannowski. Now it's a little bit different with, with the other, it's a lot of it different with Hank

Starting point is 00:22:55 Brown with Jeremy Hecklinsky in that they have a year plus in this system. But Mark had the confidence of been there, done that, won a national championship. does Jeremy Hinklinsky, does Hank Brown have that confidence, especially with Jeremy having not really played any meaningful snaps in his college football career, Hank Brown playing meaningful snaps, but them not being great. I mean, particularly, we all know the Indiana game, don't need to beat that, that horse.

Starting point is 00:23:24 But then you look back at Arkansas when he was at Auburn, he threw three interceptions in the first half against his first time playing against Power 4 competition. So, man, you know, looking back at some film recently from the open spring practice, and you can kind of see, oh, they're actively trying to get Hank to throw the ball down the field. Oh, they're actively trying to get heck to take the check down, make the smart play, make the safe play. And I, yeah, I'm not buying necessarily into the confidence until I see it, not even just against Northern Illinois, Iowa State, or UNI, because those,

Starting point is 00:24:03 are all tune-up games, but, I mean, we'll, somebody's in for a route at awakening, I think, against Michigan at, at the big house. We'll see, but yeah, like I said, I'll believe it when I see it,

Starting point is 00:24:17 and especially against NIU, like, whether it's a tune-up game or not, those first games of the year are, are telling about what you're going to get. And Mark was nervous last year, eventually settled in a couple games into the year against Albany,

Starting point is 00:24:33 but I think it'll be really interesting to see who trots out there against Northern Illinois and I think we'll get an indication as to if the confidence is warranted or not. Lucas just graduated a couple of years ago from the University of Iowa, Big Hawkeye fan, along with Sean Roberts, who were part of our afternoon crew over at KX&O.

Starting point is 00:27:54 Now they have Beyond the Bench. They're on from 4 until 6 o'clock. You can catch them anytime. Podcasts also are up on that front if you enjoy listening that way. Those guys do a really fun show also. So we got three different shows there on the network. is the only one that is still on the radio. Probably a part of that is me being old because of my age and being in this industry, as long as that I have. I just can't give away the radio element. I still think it's important. I think a city, the size of Des Moines, still needs a daily sports radio show.

Starting point is 00:28:24 And I'm hoping to fill that void and even going it alone on that front. But I got a great group of people that I'm working with, really excited about that venture. If you just search the Rush Radio, it will pop up. You can see it there. You can also subscribe and listen to our daily shows, all three. of them each and every day on the network.
