Starting point is 00:00:00 Rapid reaction after Iowa comes back to beat Minnesota 31-14 and return Floyd to home. We break down the game, a quick look at what we saw up here in Minnesota today. Locked on Hawkeyes. You are locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Starting point is 00:00:39 We're available wherever you find podcasts. You can also watch us on YouTube. Hit that subscribe button if you're watching on YouTube. If you're listening on the audio side, five-star reviews. It helps us get in front of more Hawkeye fans. Well, let's get into it. Iowa with a comeback victory, 31-14 the final as Phil Fleck and the Gophers go down. It was another one what was really a tale of two halves and a tale of three quarters versus one.
Starting point is 00:01:05 The second quarter was hideous from the Hawkeyes in late situations in the first half, deciding not to take a chance down the field, and instead go into the locker room down in that one. We talked throughout the course of the week just how important this game was here this evening for Iowa. Iowa had to find a way to win it with what's still in front of them, the bye week this week, then Ohio State looming after that. We know how difficult this is going to be and have any chance at all against the Buckeyes is going to be an incredibly tall mountain to climb for them to get there. And we got plenty of time to break that down now with the bye week, but it just feels so great to get that to victory. And there was a lot of talk about obviously what happened a year ago.
Starting point is 00:01:46 The 12-10 loss to Minnesota. The Cooper to Gene. Invalid fair catch. There were t-shirts on both sides up here in Minnesota tonight. Both, it was not a fair catch. And it was an invalid fair catch. A lot of Gopher fans were wearing that one. And I got to chuckle.
Starting point is 00:02:00 No, I've said, I love this rivalry game. I love this matchup. I love going up there. Tailgated with some Minnesota people, along with a group of my friends. And it's just, it's such a fun rivalry. And maybe it's because of the history that goes along with it, the trophy that goes along with it, knowing what these two teams are, and the little extra juice that's been added here.
Starting point is 00:02:23 But more than anything, fighting a way to get this victory, it was uber important. I said it during the week. It didn't matter how it was. Now, this one felt a whole lot better after they kind of cruise it in the fourth quarter and have just that monster third quarter that puts this thing away. Jump out to an early lead and then the second quarter where nothing was going right. There were plays to be made out there there was opportunities and they just weren't able to have it a uh big punt return that was called back ability to kind of flip the field in that one with weijin and that didn't happen because of a block in the back on tj hall in fact that was the only penalty though in the game and overall i will play the clean football
Starting point is 00:03:01 game and played i think a much better that second will loom, and we'll talk plenty about that. We'll be back with you on Monday. We will have a deeper dive into this one. Being at the stadium here tonight, I did have a great opportunity, obviously, to look through everything that we've seen and kind of all the parts to it. But it felt great. And really the biggest part about this is going to be the conversation about Caleb Johnson and what he continues to do after having to sit out the first half because of a suspension
Starting point is 00:03:28 in week one against Illinois State. Coming back in that one afterwards and still running for over 100 yards. Had a couple of touchdowns in that one. He has now scored multiple touchdowns in every game. I mean, think of that. Nine touchdowns now through the first four games of the season. If that continues, we're talking 27 nine touchdowns now through the first four games of the season. If that continues, we're talking 27 rushing touchdowns. Now I don't think he's going to stay at the pace that he is
Starting point is 00:03:50 right now. I don't anticipate that we're going to see him put together that kind of season. Also, that would mean he's rushing for a nearly 2000 yards a season. If it continues, there's going to be tough games. There's going to be ones that are loaded up and it's going to come down to Kate McNamara being able to make plays. And we saw again, more Brendan Sullivan in this one. He was out there in that goal line situation when they were going inside the 10 yard line, he was coming into the game. Cade McNamara needs to be better. And he wasn't helped. There were a couple of drops in there. Again, 11 of 19, just 62 yards passing for Cade McNamara in this one. Was sacked one time, also had a run in there.
Starting point is 00:04:30 That was all that we got to see from Cade McNamara. Has to give him more. He just does. And you can say it's shaking off rust. You can say that working his way off of these injuries now, three substantial injuries over the last two years, that he's a little bit gun-shy. And I think you see that too. And there's plenty of times where his mechanics fail him.
Starting point is 00:04:46 And he's always been a guy that drops down. He doesn't have your prototypical over-the-top delivery there. It's not three quarters, but it's kind of like a seven-eighths kind of release to him. And there's times that he's going to drop down a little bit more. But they're going to have to do that. And I don't know if there's opportunities. And this is something when I go back and re-watch the game on Sunday night, we'll definitely take a deeper look at seeing, is this just what the offense is?
Starting point is 00:05:10 And are the route trees a way where those opportunities down the field just aren't there right now? And either Tim Lester is not comfortable with those kind of plays and having that opportunity, but you know you're going to have to do that. I was not going to be able to run the table here or even lose to Ohio State and run the table after that just playing in a film booth. Caleb Johnson's great. He's awesome, and we'll get more into him a little bit later on, but we have that part. There's going to be a piece of this, and how about the defense and what they did in the second half? Holding them, what, under 60 yards, I think it was, in the second half of action, just completely slowing down anything that Minnesota was trying to do.
Starting point is 00:05:49 You can see at times Brosmer was uncomfortable, and a big credit to the Iowa defense for making that. They were all over the place, some guys making some big plays. We'll take a little deeper dive into the numbers here, kind of go through and take a look at some of the more impactful numbers, get into some of those defensive ones as well. Again, throughout the course of the week, we break things down. We give you the rewatch and a rewatch of exactly what you see out there on the field. We'll get the numbers from pro football focus. We will get into that as well. That's always a huge component of just seeing if it really goes hand in hand with what we kind of
Starting point is 00:06:23 see, right? What we anticipate is going to see there. That's what we're always looking for. And definitely a big part of that. We'll do that as we continue here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Iowa wins 31-14 over the Gophers. A deep dive into the numbers as we continue Lockdown Hawkeyes. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Look, you've heard us talk a lot about FanDuel.

Starting point is 00:07:23 They got you covered with a wide array of player props, team props, you name it, they have it at the FanDuel Sportsbook. And I love the depth that they have in the futures market. You can get in on this right now. Again, FanDuel.com is where you go. Just visit FanDuel.com and download America's number one sportsbook. It's FanDuel. All right, back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Trent Cotter with you reacting to what we saw this evening. Iowa gets the win over Minnesota 31-14. All right, let's take a look at some of the numbers.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And I'll mention at the top, obviously, the quarterback came back tomorrow, 11 of 19, 62 yards. Caleb Johnson, 21 carries, 206 yards. It was also great to see. They were just pounding away late in the football game. They put this one in the lockbox, and we're just going to cruise into the victory. Still 18 hard-earned carries for Jazzyon Patterson for 66 yards. And that, I saw Jacob Gill with a carry for nine yards. Same with Weechan, as he got one for six yards.
Starting point is 00:08:27 So that's what we're able to get on that one. Iowa doing a multitude of different things with the three rushing touchdowns. Just two catches for Addison Estrango for 20 yards. He continues to be, though, an important part of this offense. Three catches, nine yards. Mentioned wanting to go back and kind of take a deeper look at the route tree. We'll have that for you a little bit later on this week. I think that's going to be an interesting one.
Starting point is 00:08:49 It's good to see Vanderzee get a catch in that one. He went up and made a play. Two catches for Hayden Large. And one other thing. Two catches for Caleb Johnson. So that's a little bit interesting, right? Two for one. One looked like it was blocked up really well.
Starting point is 00:09:06 And obviously didn't turn into a big play there. But you do wonder with that if we're going to see something that's going to pop in the screen game. And we haven't seen a ton of that. We've talked about there's a little more jet sweep motion in this one just continuing to move. We've talked about the usage of motion and how Iowa's done that under Tim Lester and definitely improved things. But that's what you got on the offensive side of the football. On the defensive side of the football, Jay Higgins, another
Starting point is 00:09:29 outstanding performance from him. Nine tackles in the game, had the interception early on, helped set up the short field, also had a pass breakup in the game. Also on the tackle sheet, eight tackles apiece for both Deshaun Lee, who played a ton out there, and Nick Jackson with eight tackles apiece. Ethan Hercut, he was impactful out there. Also a sack, by the way, for Nick Jackson. Jamari Harris and Sebastian Castro with four apiece. This team flying around, making some plays.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Great to see. And a really good game for Nick Jackson after another slow start, I thought, this year. Feels like he's coming on, and we saw that certainly from him a year ago. Gwen Cholte also with an interception during the second half of the game. Great to see him get a pickoff. A lot of guys out there, a lot of rotation. It was a hot one also here in Minnesota tonight. It was a warm, warm evening of football, and with it, obviously, saw a lot more players out there on the field. It's going to be good feelings. It is, and there's things to fix. I still don't think this is a great Iowa football team,
Starting point is 00:10:27 but can they get there? Absolutely. I think there's still more improvement that can be there. And what the defense did in the second half, it probably hasn't been at the level that many expected, myself included, defensively. One other guy I definitely have to mention is Reese Dakin. And I've been hard on Dakin because, frankly, I just haven't thought he's been good enough.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And yes, he's not going to be Torrey Taylor. He's not going to be what Torrey Taylor was as a freshman. Remember, that was a 23-year-old freshman coming in here, and he was doing it during 2020 when there was nobody in the stands. This is a completely different circumstances for a 19-year-old than Reese Dakin. And I thought he had his best night of punting. Speaking of special teams, I also got to give a shout out to Drew Stevens.
Starting point is 00:11:09 And we saw this a year ago at the beginning of the year, hit that rough stretch towards the end of the season, was pulled in the game against Nebraska, didn't get the opportunity as Marshall Meter came in and hit the game winner, just getting it over the crossbar to dispatch the Cornhuskers a year ago on Black Friday. And you wondered, you wondered how he was going to come back because it's not a talent problem. Drew Stevens' talent is through the roof. I mean, this guy is one of the more talented guys
Starting point is 00:11:35 than I was had, obviously a host of great kickers over Kurt Ferens' 26 years. I mean, we've got a ton of guys that have been able to come in and be able to play at a really high level. However, A ton of guys that have been able to come in and be able to play at a really high level. However, he's right up there with all those guys in terms of leg strength, ability to hit a bunch of different kind of kicks that you need in different circumstances. And Weta Rai, how was he going to bounce back? He's been absolutely beautiful. The field goal that made it, what, 24-14, made it a two-score game. He's just so calm, cool, collected when he comes in there and was
Starting point is 00:12:05 able to knock that one through. So big shout out tonight to the special teams. That was one of the angles that we talked about in the pregame leading up to this game that Iowa had a big advantage in the special teams. And that definitely played out. Good vibes. Floyd is back home. That is so good to see as well, getting in there, because this was a crossroads game. If they lost this football game, the negativity, the questions, it was going to get ugly. And it didn't. And so now we have two weeks to get ready for Ohio State. Will Iowa have a game plan?
Starting point is 00:12:39 You hope it's not like it was the last time they were out in Columbus a couple years ago. It just got absolutely taken to the woodshed. That day, too, the Iowa defense played really well. What was it? 54-10 loss. The defense played well. Kept them under 320 yards in that football game, that high-powered Ohio State offense.
Starting point is 00:12:54 The problem was the offense stunk. Got to get more out of Kate. Got to get more out of McNamara. Have to get more out of the passing game. And as we get closer to that, we'll continue to break things down. But we got a wide range of things we got to get into here this week. The bye week will give us an opportunity to kind of do some different things, talk about a few different things, go more big picture at times, and then bring it in insular. We'll dive deep into all of that here on Lockdown Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us today here, Rapid Reaction. Again, we will be back with you with a full show on Monday. We will have a
Starting point is 00:13:22 recap of everything after I have an opportunity to rewatch the game and see the TV broadcast of things. Going to look a little bit deeper. Are there plays down the field that are available and just aren't being taken? Or is this just schematically right now that Tim Lester doesn't feel comfortable in putting those kind of plays in there offensively? It's going to have to change. It's going to have to get better. But for one night, I definitely felt great. And it's great sitting there in the fourth quarter as all the Gopher fans are making their way to the exit and enjoying a nice grain belt up in Minnesota and having a really, really good time. Floyd is back home, 31-14. Iowa gets the win. Thanks for making Lockdown
