Starting point is 00:00:01 Three Hawkeyes landed on Bruce Feldman's freaks list, and that's a massive reason for excitement in 2006. Cade Piper, Zach Lutber, and Kamari Brown bring elite athleticism that's going to make a major impact for the Hawkeyes coming up this season. We're going to talk a little basketball later on in the program. Breakdown, who's going to be the star for the Hawkeyes coming up this season after the departure of Bennett Sturtz. We're going

Starting point is 00:00:51 to talk about some football storylines coming up as we get ready for Friday in Iowa Football Media Day. I'll be in Iowa City for that, looking forward to that. And then a day later, of course, we'll get our only glimpse of the team as we will get Kids Day activities and a chance to see the guys run through for about 90 minutes. We'll talk about that and more. Also with John Bowencamp. He is the writer for the Associated Press. John will join us a little bit later on and talk some Hawkeyes with John.

Starting point is 00:01:15 But we begin today with the Freaks list is out once again from the athletic and Bruce Feldman. This is something that he has put together now for a number of years. And we've seen plenty of Hawkeyes that have been scattered in. But three different Hawkeyes land in the top 50 of his list. These are guys that have some elite athleticism, something that Bruce Feldman talks about a lot when he goes through and talks us to coaches across the country about the different guys. So three different Hawkeyes land on the list. You got Zach Lutmer that is there, Kamari Brown and Cade Piper.

Starting point is 00:01:46 Just a quick run through of each of these players and what we found out from this list. Remember a year ago, Preston Reese was a guy that showed up, though he's dealt with some injuries here as of late, a guy that you're excited about his future at the linebacker spot. We've seen ridiculous guys as well, the Tristan Worf's of the world in the past. There's been some great ones here. But to see three players on this list, I think is absolutely exciting about this team and talks about some of the high-end talent that Iowa has. Now, number eight overall in the country on the freaks list is Cade Piper.

Starting point is 00:02:16 We've talked about him as an interior offensive lineman. The big question is going to be, is he going to make that full transition in to be the Hawkeye starting center this year? Or is Kate Piper going to be a guy that stays where he was last season, and that is a guard. A lot of that is going to depend on Cale Winter, what he's doing in the middle, the return of Michael Mislinski and hopefully a healthy season in his final year of eligibility, what he's going to be able to do and just how it works. And that's why they're going through the practices right now and just figuring out what is the best mix for Iowa along that offensive line, finding the right five guys and how they fit together. A ridiculous athlete.

Starting point is 00:02:54 And that's something that we've definitely seen. A year ago, Kate Piper was number 22 on this list, now up to number eight, six foot three, 300 pounds. We know about the power. that it goes along with it. A PFF had him graded out last year as the top right guard in an All-American by Pro Football Focus a year ago. A little bit more from the article here and what Bruce Feldman had to say about him. Here's a number for you. The fastest short shuttle among offensive guys, an Iowa record 4.13 am wrong. That among guards, he posted the vertical record at 37.4 and the best 10-yard dash as well at 1.5.

Starting point is 00:03:33 to this offseason. He also set the program record for heaviest squat by a guard, 680 pounds. Boom, big time, Cade Peeper, and he's going to be a big piece of this offensive line that I think is going to be very good once again this season. Next up on the list, number 27 in the country, it's a newbie, and this one was excited. Exciting. Talk to Scott Docterman last week on my radio show. He mentioned that before the list came out.

Starting point is 00:04:00 Keep an eye out for Camari Brown, who comes in from Elon. Of course, a tremendous season a year ago. And this is what Bruce Feldman had to say about Camari Brown. A second team, FCS All-American last year at Elon. Brown led the conference program with 16 tackles for loss, 12 sacks last season, three force fumbles and eight quarterback hurries. This offseason, the 6-2, 258-pound Brown, a former high school running back in North Carolina. Broad jump 10-3, vertical jump 40.2 inches. It was timed at 156 in the 10-yard.

Starting point is 00:04:33 split. These are exceptional numbers for a nearly 260 pound edge rusher. We know about the question marks up front. We know about the questions that we have gone through with this team and specifically what the defensive line looks like. I think we are finding out more and more. Camari Brown is going to be part at minimum of the rotation. You return Kenneth Meriwether, who's got a lot of experience, played plenty of snaps a season ago, even in a limited backup role. He would start a part of the rotation a year ago. You have Yose A Penaessa. We've talked about them and the depth at defensive end with the Drew Campbell's and and Shinike and guys like that that still are going to be able to help out. Is it going to be Joseph Anderson that takes a step

Starting point is 00:05:13 forward this year? But Kamari Brown, he is going to be a part of it, no doubt. And the thing that you love, this is as they did with most every one of their guys, multiple years of eligibility, fighting out exactly how they want them to play, what Kelvin Bell teaches up front on that defensive line. It's going to be a fun season of Kamari Brown and a guy that very well could be in the running to have the most sacks on the season. Well, some predictions coming up on that a little bit later on. And then finally, number 37 on the list, a guy that we all know incredibly well, that is Zach Lutmer, a playmaker, and this is what Bruce Feldman had to say about the Hawkeye defensive back. The Hawkeyes have had remarkable DB pedigree, and the 6-foot 1,

Starting point is 00:05:53 203-pound Lutmer is next in the pipeline. He was the second team, all Big Ten pick last season, 71 tackles, five and a half tackles for loss, along with three interceptions, a year. year ago. This offseason, Lutmer showed off his elite agility by clocking a 3.81 shuttle time, setting a new record for Hawkeye DPs. Especially impressive considering the program has produced the likes of Cooper to Jean, Micah Hyde, Josh Jackson, Desmond King, Bob Sanders. That 3.81 would match the fastest shuttle time ever recorded at the NFL Combine, which Brandon Cooks ran in 2014. Lutmer also 41.9 in the vertical and squatted 575 pounds. Zach Lutmer very well could be a guy that we're talking about as a first rounder.

Starting point is 00:06:41 And as we go back a couple years ago, another guy with some similar pedigree and Cooper to Jean. He was a second round draft pick. And I think there's a lot of GMs and a lot of teams across the NFL that are kicking themselves about that. Well, we go back to Western Iowa a little bit further north for this one in Zach Lutmer. And I think you have a guy that definitely has an opportunity. if he can have a playmaking season this year to be in the same kind of ranks. Now, you look at Zach Lutmerney, wonder what is he at the next level? Look, they can figure that out.

Starting point is 00:07:09 What we know is Iowa has a tremendous football player, coupled with the tutelage of Phil Parker and what he does with defensive backs year after year after year. You know, the one interesting part to me about that is last year playing a lot of the cash position a season ago for Lutmer with the transition. Looks like he's going to end up back to free safety, you know, that five and a half tackles for loss last year. probably not going to be at that same level, not playing on the line nearly as much as you do,

Starting point is 00:07:33 playing that cash position as opposed to back of free safety. But could it lead to more interceptions? And, you know, one thing that has dried up for Iowa football here the last couple of years defensively is they're not forcing the same number of turnovers that they've done in the past. Now, I've had my theory for a number of years, and we've talked about it here on the podcast, and that is because of the offensive issues that we've seen dating back

Starting point is 00:07:56 and though there's been improvements the last couple of years with Tim Lester. at the helm, teams are not as aggressive against the Hawkeyes, knowing that you don't have to take chances at the same level unless the offense is going to make you pay for it. And because of that, I think teams have been a little bit more conservative while they're playing offensively against the Hawkeyes, not looking to make mistakes. Well, if the offense does take a step forward this year, if there is an improvement out of the passing game this season, I think that's going to be more teams are going to have to

Starting point is 00:08:25 try to score more against this Hawkeye team. And with it, more opportunities and opportunities for guys like Zap Lutmer. A couple other numbers I wanted to throw out to you and a couple other freaks that were not on the list, but some athleticism numbers. So I had an opportunity to see some numbers and I can't share them, unfortunately, everything that I've seen. But some agility numbers from back in the spring and some of the different ones that are out there. One guy that showed up on the list a couple of times, and it's a guy I think maybe we're sleeping on a little bit. It's that wide receiver. And yes, we love Reese Vander Z.

Starting point is 00:08:56 and we're excited about Tony Diaz and Evan James coming in and what those two guys potentially could be and the impact that they can meet having some extra speed out there on the field. Dayton Howard, yes, we've seen it. Some of the young guys, Zaver Stimson, very excited about what he can be down the line at the wide receiver spot. But Jarrett Bowie, who had such a weird year last year, had the soft tissue injury, didn't get to see him a season ago, but this guy that was playing, and he definitely looks the part. On top of it, he plays the part too. Talk about ridiculous.

Starting point is 00:09:26 How about this? A vertical? Over 44 inches for Jarrett Bowie last spring. That's what this guy can do, and that's the kind of athleticism that he has. He has good size at the wide receiver position. He moves incredibly well. If he can put it all together, you're looking for a sleeper. Maybe not a guy that's going to lead the team in catches or anything like that.

Starting point is 00:09:44 But we talk so much about that third and fourth receiver and who it's going to be, don't sleep on Jarrett Bowie. If he can take that great athleticism, definitely can take a step forward. A guy we've talked about as well a lot when you talk about the freaks list, and that is Brevindal. It's been an injury plague start to the career for Brevindal, but the ADM product has elite level speed. And you look at the work that he's been doing. You see some of the list there for the agility drills that they do, vertical leap. He is up there in almost every single category out of the skilled position guys.

Starting point is 00:10:16 Now stay healthy, find a role. That's going to be the next step for Brevindal. Another guy that showed up on the list a ton. and two guys on the defense. First, Cam Buffington, which should not be a surprise. I mean, Cam Buffington, we have talked about him a ton ascending to the top now of the middle linebacker spot, taking over the spot of Jaden Montgomery,

Starting point is 00:10:34 who played middle linebacker a year ago and I was going to kick outside. Speaking of that, Jane Montgomery, this was maybe my most surprising one along with Jared Bowie going through some of those lists and some of those numbers, and that was seeing Jaden Montgomery up there in a lot of the athleticism components. We know he's not a tall guy.

Starting point is 00:10:51 he's listed at what 510 i don't think he's that but a guy that definitely can move out there and with him on the outside and the speed that he has and is definitely shown in these workouts kind of get excited about the linebacker group and what buffington and montgomery are going to look like together coming back on the other side more hawkeye talk as we are joined by john bowen camp we'll talk a little bit about his dodgers first little baseball talk before we get into of course iowa football with him who is going to be the quarterback is it hank brown is it jeremy hank brown is it jeremy Glensky. No, we, we did. We did. I know better. Just a little bit. And, uh, I'm ready to get home. I don't know if you can tell it in my voice, but yeah, day number three in Vegas. Yeah. It hits you. It hits you. Ready to be back. As much as I love being here and being at Circa. Starting point is 00:14:17 watching some of the old timers anything like that but drew so you guys will it will have a connection there with the dodgers they're not playing great baseball right now they have uh struggled and and but But you know me, John. I'm not going to. You have taught me many years ago. They'll be fine. And certainly with the Dodgers, this is not a time to hit the panic button. It's all about October.

Starting point is 00:14:39 And I saw Snell back out there last night. They're getting healthier. They're going to be fine come October. The angst, I think, is silly at this point. I'm sure you do as well. Right. Yeah, I mean, it's a 162 game season. Everybody goes through a bad batch.

Starting point is 00:14:53 You know, I'd be worried more if everything was perfect from, from April, from March, I guess now, March to October 1st. I would be more worried now. Everybody goes to, everybody has injuries. Everybody has, you know, and the thing is, they always go into the season knowing they're going to get October. Their worry right now is getting everything set up for October, and you see that now. Blake smells back.

Starting point is 00:15:18 Tyra Glass now is going to be coming back at some point. You know, they hope to get Will Smith back at some point. They're getting healthy again, and they're getting guys back. it still comes down to hitting, but, you know, Mooky Betts had a good night last night, Max Muncie's had a good week so far. You know, it's just a matter of everybody kind of goes through it, and I think right now what happened was,

Starting point is 00:15:39 especially in this last stretch, was everybody went through it at the same time. So they'll be fine. You know, I'm not worried. They picked up a game on Arizona last night, so I'm not worried. It's just a matter of where they're going to be seeded in the playoffs and that sort of thing.

Starting point is 00:15:53 I just want them. I don't want them to have to play in that opening, you know, that opening three-game series, just get to the second round and worry about it from there. Short series, we know it's baseball. Anything can happen. It doesn't matter who the opponent is. You want to stay away from there. And for the Dodgers, it is.

Starting point is 00:16:08 The length of the series is kind of their best weapon because the depth of that team, the top to bottom, what they are, one through 26 is just different than everybody else. And that's what you want. Yeah. And to stay away from that. The Brewers, the Braves, and the Dodgers, really good heavy heads there. You got the Cubs there also. Well, one of the teams I didn't mention is going to be in our,

Starting point is 00:16:26 great state tomorrow and that is the Phillies as they take on my team the minnesota twins the field of dreams game as back and john you as a big baseball fan yes it's going to be different than when we saw the white socks of the yankees and just how special that was and and then getting the cubs there also and what that was but it's been gone for a couple of years it's been away are you excited and maybe to take that a step further do you think the general baseball population is excited to have the field of dreams game back this year I don't know if, like, nationally, this catches on. To me, it's more about Iowa.

Starting point is 00:17:02 This is a new facility. You know, they, you know, rebuild everything around there, and it's a new facility that I think is going to be a big part of this state baseball landscape over the next few years in terms of getting a game like this, getting a minor league game like last night's game, and probably is going to be where the high school state tournament ends up. I think there's probably more excitement within the state. nationally. But I do think it's cool that it's coming back. I do think it's cool. They've built

Starting point is 00:17:30 this thing. I'm curious to see what the reaction is going to be, you know, when people are in it and it's going to be packed and all that. But I think it's more of a statewide thing than anything else. But I do think it's a great event. And I'm glad it's back. Well, one thing we know definitely matters in a big way, and that is the Iowa Hawkeyes. You are on the Hawkeye beat during the season. And as we get ready for the start of this year, Iowa, the coaches poll has them a preseason top 25 team. I want to start in that realm because I've struggled to see this team as at least preseason top 25.

Starting point is 00:18:04 Not that they can't get there, of course, but with all the question marks, it feels very un-Iwa-like. The lack of seniors that they have, the question marks that they have in so many different spots there, it's kind of wild to me. They have the least returning production of any Power 4 conference team coming into the year that yet nationally, this was dubbed a preseason top 25 team. Yeah, which I agree with you because you're right. I mean, you don't know what the offensive line is going to look like.

Starting point is 00:18:31 You don't know what the, especially with the defensive lines you're like. And those two areas have been such a mainstay for what they've done, you know, over the years. So, yeah, it did kind of surprise me a little bit. But then there's also this, I think everybody figured that Kirk Farrant knows what he's doing. He knows how to build a roster. He knows how to find guys. He knows how to develop guys. And I think maybe they look at it a little differently.

Starting point is 00:18:55 And we do saying, yeah, okay, there's some holes that he knows what he's doing. And so I think that was, I think it was more of a respect thing than anything else. I do think this is the top 25 team and it will be eventually. I do think they probably get to nine wins. I do think there's a lot of good things about this team. It did kind of surprise me a little bit. But again, like I said, I think it's a respect thing more than anything else for what Kirk Farrant has done and continues to do with this program. We have seen in the past Kirk Farrants at the quarterback position.

Starting point is 00:19:26 Has we come into this season not knowing, is it going to be Hank Brown? Is it going to be Jeremy Hecklinski? There's been times where it feels like I've dubbed it. Kirk's brain is a little bit broken when it comes to quarterback and making changes when maybe they need to happen there where he doesn't worry about a middle linebacker or a defensive back or an offensive guard. I'm making a switch quarterback for whatever reason. I don't know if it was Rudok versus Bethard.

Starting point is 00:19:50 I don't know if it was Stansy against Christensen. Whatever it is, it is different here. That leads me to this, whoever it is when we get to the season, John, do you think there's going to be a quicker hook than we've seen in the past? If we see whatever the starter is at quarterback more open to making a change more quickly this season? The bottom line is, and people have asked me, you know, who's the quarterback and all that? And I don't have a favorite, you know, as I always tell people, I get paid the same way,

Starting point is 00:20:19 no matter who's quarterback. But I would say, it always comes down to, and it's something that he brings up time and again, who's going to make the least mistakes? You know, if you've got one quarterback that, you know, that in camp is, you know, completing a lot of long passes and looks great, but he's also throwing three interceptions. That guy's not going to play. You know, but if you have a steady quarterback who doesn't make any mistakes, runs the team, runs the offense, well, that's going to be the guy's play. So in my mind, what August is going to be, and I think everybody's going to look at kids' day on Saturday, and they're going to be dissecting every path in that one, and they're going to come up with their favorite one way or the other. But in Kurt's mind, it is, you know, what was the spring like, what was the summer like, what was August like,

Starting point is 00:21:07 when before they make that determination? And I'll be honest, I think it goes into the season. I think maybe they both of those guys get opportunities in those first three games. the time Big Ten play gets here, I think he's going to have one. But before then, I think it's going to be both of those guys are going to get a look because, you know, they're going to want to see. Because none of them, we really haven't seen them under the light, as they always say. And I think they're going to want to see them actually.

Starting point is 00:21:35 Unless somebody really separates themselves this month, I think we're going to see them going into the season. And I think both them are going to play. It's going to be an interesting look. And you mentioned Friday, we get Media Day. and then on Saturday, our only glimpse at the game with Kids Day. Speaking of that, outside of quarterback, what is the other position group you're looking forward to seeing on Saturday and just getting a better read of what they're going to look

Starting point is 00:21:58 like when we get to the season? What is the position group outside of Hecklinsky v. Brown? You're looking forward to seeing coming up this later this week. I'll go back to what I was saying earlier, the lines, both lines. You know, who lines up with the ones, who lines up with the twos, and where do they line up? and so I think that'll give you a good idea on what the line looks like and then you can kind of make your assumptions on how good or you know how they're going to be this year that to me is the biggest that to me is the biggest question with

Starting point is 00:22:26 this team because I do think they've got some talented guys there we just don't you know kind of where it all fits and you know especially the defensive line you know Phil Parker has always loved having that rotation of you know seven or eight guys that just can keep coming in and just be fresh the whole game I does he have that this year I don't know. So that's going to be in my mind those those two spots are going to be the biggest question marks outside of quarterback that you'll look at on kids today. And posing it this way, you know, who's going to be the star of this team? It's not going to be for Iowa basketball, what we saw a year ago with Bennett Sturtz, basically running the show, doing everything for this team and the expectations that were put on him, just everything going through him.

Starting point is 00:26:09 It is going to be more of a complete team, if you will. and not relying on one. Who's going to be that guy that steps up? And when he talk about Iowa basketball, and maybe more importantly, when we hear some of the national talking heads talk about this Iowa team, who's going to be the guy that they mentioned most?

Starting point is 00:26:25 Now, we've talked a ton about the addition of Andrew McKeever. It's 7 foot three. He is very difficult to miss out there. When we watch practices, you definitely see he shows up. And he looks at and seeing the size of the biggest player in Iowa basketball history, that's going to be a peep. But he's not going to be the star of this squad. You look at some of the returners.

Starting point is 00:26:44 Camp Maniow's not going to be a guy that suddenly he's going to be out there. I don't think putting up 14 and 8 monster performances like that, game in and game out. There'll be performances like that, but throughout the course of the season. I really think it's going to be Cooper Cotch.

Starting point is 00:26:56 And one thing that I wondered going into the season and I pondered here was every day, as you definitely know that, the versatility of his game. Can he go from what he was a year ago, a guy that was a spot-up shooter, that was really his major role. And now adding, being,

Starting point is 00:27:12 more diverse in his game and his skill set that he was able to put together. And I think it's there. From the reports we saw over in Iowa City of what he was doing, he was not available. I think for the first practice that was open to the media, but the last two, as you can see that there is that next step. And I think that's going to be the guy we're going to talk about. He also just became such more, much more comfortable. It felt like it is in his own skin a year ago.

Starting point is 00:27:35 You saw that out of him and a big step forward. I think Cooper Couch is going to be that guy that takes that step. But excited about this team.
