Rapid reaction after Iowa falls tonight 90 81 at the hands of the Purdue Boilermakers.

first purchase. Well, we have a packed show for you today. So
many different things to get into. We have a basketball game
coming up this evening as the Iowa women after
the huge epic victory against USC on Sunday afternoon. They're
back on the hardwood as they take on a much improved
Minnesota team that's looking for revenge after what's
happened in the last couple of years against the Hawkeye
women. That's coming up. We will also talk about Iowa
wrestling landing the number one recruit in the country for
the class of two thousand and twenty-six and Bo Bassett who
makes his commitment to the Hawkeyes. What does that mean
for them going forward and try to chase what we talked about a
week ago on Friday night. The behemoth that is Penn State but
we open up today with a rapid reaction to what we saw as
Iowa goes down to Purdue on the
surface. Not a big surprise, right? Purdue, a top 10 team in
the country. Purdue, a perennial power in the Big 10. Purdue,
with the preseason player of the year, Braden Smith, who was an
absolute stud in this one for the Boilermakers. You're also
doing it for the first time, minus your most complete player in Owen Freeman. So, when you
look at it in that realm, why should we be surprised? Why
should we be upset? Why should we even care? And
unfortunately, I know for a lot of people, that's where you
are. The check out factor of Iowa basketball is incredible.
And to see not just what happens in the stands and another small crowd out of hand
at Carver Hawkeye here this evening. Not what you're seeing
just in that realm but just overall the conversation, the
talk, the number of people that were huge basketball fans. So I
got a text group with my tailgate buddies, right? Guys
that have been part of the group. Some of them have moved
away, aren't able to make it as often to Iowa City and make their way to the football games
Like it once was but it's still a core group guys. We live together in Iowa City
Still have kids around the same age, you know, we were friends and we see sports in the same way
And to see the sheer number of these guys
that are checked out that can't watch it anymore,
either because they don't care
or the frustrations have bubbled to the surface.
Now, I'll also be honest,
I don't believe they're not really watching.
In fact, I know they are, but it's a good,
it's for them, all right, they're playing a bit, right?
But those people that are out there, people that wouldn't miss Iowa basketball for the world, and they're not there. They're not
watching. They're not watching the product, a product that again goes out, plays incredibly
well for the first couple of minutes. And great to see Riley Mulvey get the start. So the new
starting lineup, they want Traore and Mulvey and that was one of the options that we
talked about potentially Iowa going substituting going with a
traditional center and Riley Mulvey who was fine. Look, he's
not a world beater. He's not an overly skilled offensive player,
but defensively, he's certainly an upgrade of what we've seen
and what we've seen historically basically
at the five position ever since Adam Woodbury.
I mean he's a guy that has the athleticism and the size and the basketball IQ to actually
go out there and hedge and do it well.
We saw that a couple of different times leading to a couple of different turnovers that are
late in the first half.
He was good.
He has a body inside.
Got to be a better rebounder, but again, that's reps.
You go from playing a handful of minutes every single year
and going out there now playing in the Big 10.
I thought he acquitted himself well.
Satoru Traori, I don't get it.
This guy has upside, like most of the guys.
And you kind of look at the collection of talent
What frame McCaffrey built this team and you can see why the struggles are there. All right, they lose Owen Freeman
But even before that you have a point guard a Brock Harding that's small
You got another one that fell well that has been a godsend and then he got a bunch of
Between six five and six seven guys that are all kind of the
same. They're interchangeable, right? They don't have specific skill sets that are that different
from each other. This is what you're left with. A bunch of small forwards, a real point guard,
a real center who's now out for the year, and a bunch of small forwards. That's not the way to build a team. That's where they are. So the starting lineup came out great. Five
quick ones from both Dix and Peyton Sanford. They're off and running, 10-3
lead and though it was the high watermark in terms of lead, they were
right there. They played well offensively. I guess that's the direction we need to
go. It was an Iowa basketball game. They sucked on the defensive end. I'll say Riley Mulvey. They
were great on the offensive end and it wasn't enough against a good team. I mean
you want to put everything together and talk about the last 15 years of Fray
McCaffrey. There it is. You saw it tonight. Great offensively against a good
defensive team. This doesn't want to produce better defensive teams. They came to the game tonight 30th in the country
in defensive efficiency. They're good, not great, not elite. And I was able to
score against them. I was able to put up points and not just the 50 combined
points from Dixon, Payton Sanford, but other guys were able to chip in.
Thelwell had seven. We saw Brock Harding do a couple of good things out there.
Offensively.
He had enough.
They shared the basketball.
They it's never a problem.
Rarely a problem on the offensive end.
But you go out there a slow start from Purdue.
Really the only thing that the Boilmakers were getting early
on was coffin red inside.
Late in the half, here comes Smith. And then the second half, they were hitting threes.
And they were open threes.
And they were wide open threes.
And just time in and time out.
Nine three-pointers in the second half of the game.
Iowa once again gives up over 50 points and a half in a game that was there for the taking.
A game that was winnable. When you're playing that well offensively, you should win games like
that at home, but they can't and they won't. And that's where we are. Troy already
makes a mistake early in the second half, has a bad turnover, was a bad one. I can't get back out there. Again,
I thought we saw what Fran does too often as it pertains to the
lineups in the second half of games. He falls in love with
them. And by the time either they're on the comeback trail
has happened again, got down double digits or chipping away.
And they ran out of gas. Peyton Stanford had a beautiful look 80-77. Here
comes Iowa again. Wide open three on the right wing. Short. And he continually plays these lineups
and runs them into the ground late. How many near comebacks have we've seen? And we've seen plenty
of comebacks too. But the near comebacks have we've seen? And we've seen plenty of
comebacks too. But the near comebacks that have been there, that they just can't get
over the hump. And I think a reason for that is that he just relies on those lineups that
he likes so much. And I get it, you want to play the hot hand. But for a guy that cares
about the end of the game, for a guy that is unwilling to play guys in the first half
when they pick up that second foul, for somebody that cares so much about the end of the game for a guy that is unwilling to play guys in the first half when they pick up that second foul
For somebody that cares so much about the end of the game
Feels like he forgets about the end of the game when it comes to patterns of substitution
Frustrating night
Couple good moments from price Sanford. I thought Brock Harding took the benching well, still played 24 minutes of the game.
I would have liked to see a little bit more Thelwell in the second half.
I would have liked to see more Traore overall.
He just plays 11 minutes in the game.
In a game where you're getting for long stretches just dominated inside, we don't see Chris
Taggio at all.
But the season's not over.
And for anybody inside that program, they know that.
They have to have the belief that they can still get it done.
Now, it's unlikely.
I think we all know that from the outside looking in.
It's highly unlikely.
It's a near impossibility for this team
to build up a resume to be an NCAA tournament team.
They just don't have the horses.
They're not good enough to do that.
But the belief has to still be in there.
Maybe as we get deeper in, we'll see more Chris D'Ajo.
And we'll see Seydou Traori get to be able to play
through his mistakes more
than some of the other guys are able to.
This one coming up Saturday now against Wisconsin.
At Carver before the two game road trip out east
to Rutgers and Maryland.
This is gonna say a lot.
I was, I thought it was a commendable effort out of the squad.
I thought they played hard.
They showed some toughness, a little resilience.
Those are the things that you wanted to see.
But now, after you get punked by Wisconsin the last time, they're better than you.
We'll see what kind of response they have.
We'll see.
It's the last stand.
Might be Custer's last stand.
Payton's last stand.
There you go
That's what we're gonna get Saturday against, Wisconsin
We'll see how they respond
They'll be likely a slight underdog in the game
It'll be close to pick them
We'll see what I was got up their sleeve
Effort was there tonight teams just not good By the way, there's some news out there.
Tucker DeVries is having season-ending surgery at West Virginia. Why does that matter? We'll talk
about that. Plus the number one recruit in the country has committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes as we continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.

Trent Conda back with you again on the Locked On Hawkeyes
podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We're going to be talking about Bo Bassett,
the number one wrestler in the country committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes and also coming up this
evening, the Iowa women back on the floor against Minnesota. We will get into that momentarily. But
one final thought for many people out there, it is the apple of their eye for the next Iowa basketball coach. It is native
Iowan, Darren DeVries, coming back home, a place where his
brother was an all-American football player, Jared DeVry
back in the 90s. A guy that of course played the historic AP
applicant to Parkersburg, played basketball at UNI. A family that
has a lot of ties more than just Jared to the University of Iowa,
a guy that waited for a long time for the right opportunity to come along and he took that at
Drake and built that program into a solid year-in-year-out contender in the Missouri Valley
Conference, something that Drake hadn't been in a long, long time. You got to go back to the 70s,
the last time they were a consistent winner.
And DeVries was able to do that there.
But as he was waiting for the next opportunity,
it didn't come in state.
So instead of waiting, he left and took
a job at West Virginia.
A West Virginia job, by the way, that in terms of wins,
is a whole lot better than what Iowa's
been for the last quarter century. A place that does have money, that has the financial
investment that they're going to make, that they're doing in their NIL, both football
and basketball wise, and a lot of reasons that people believe that the West Virginia
basketball job is a better job than Iowa. And it's hard to come up with anything definitive
to say that those people are wrong. However, for some, and I don't know if it's hard to come up with anything definitive to say that those people
are wrong.
However, for some, and I don't know if it's the case with Deere and DeVries, but for some,
home is a big call.
An opportunity to bring Iowa basketball back or to build on what Freya McCaffrey has done.
To do it in your home state.
To have family be something important.
Maybe West Virginia is not a very good
fit. Whatever the reason is, it continues to be out there and
with the news from yesterday that his son Tucker DeVries,
two-time Missouri Valley Conference Larry Bird player of
the year award winner. A guy that is an absolute bucket can
score in a myriad of ways. A tremendous shooter with good
size and has shown this year before the
injury hit that he can compete at the power conference level,
which shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody. But there's
always people with those questions. With him shutting it
down, it leads to more speculation. Now, do I believe
that this is a done deal? I don't. You go back and
many of the stories that happened back the last time Iowa had something
relatively similar back in 1999. Now we know Dr. Thomas Davis's contract was
not renewed. He was a lame duck coach going into that final season. Instead of
firing him, they let him finish out his contract which led to the final of the sweet 16 run of the last time
Iowa was in the sweet 16 of the 98-99 season
This is different because Fran
Well, he says he's gonna be back people believe he's going to be back
Sidelane demeanor says differently to me, but that's what we continue to hear
but if it becomes untenable and as the attendance figures continue
to crater, as the interest continues to wane for Iowa men's basketball, and if a change is made,
we know that DeVries is going to be at the top of the list. There's a lot of things that make
sense. It's a phone call that needs to be made. There's a buyout involved. There's a buyout for
Fray McCaffrey that would be involved. There's money that needs to be spent. Does Iowa have it? It's a question I
don't know. I believe that they can. I believe that they will because guess what?
Programs across the country that do not have the same financial resources
of Iowa have been able to do it. If they can, I have a feeling that I will be able to find
a way. We will see. We will see on that one. But interesting note at the very least. Let's
get into some wrestling. So we go back to the weekend. And on Friday night, I was just,
I'm still absolutely just bewildered by the wrestling fans out there, the way that you support your sport. You let it know,
be known, what you think of your program, your team. I like wrestling. I grew up in Osage.
I am a wrestling fan. I was a terrible wrestler myself. Yeah, believe it or not, look at me. Yeah,
bad wrestler. No big surprise. However, I really enjoy the sport. I've been broadcasting the state wrestling tournament on radio now for the last 15 years
We're doing it again this year down at Wells Fargo Arena. Enjoy the sport immensely. I have friends, family,
people that are involved in the sport at some high levels and
When the conversation before the commitment
went to Bo Bassett, nothing but going terms.
Is he Spencer Lee?
We'll see.
The accolades that Spencer Lee had were certainly a rarity.
A guy that did things at the junior level
that were very rare, same with Ben Keter.
But this is a big time get for Iowa. A kid out of Pennsylvania,
Spencer Lee. And when we've talked about Iowa, we talked about if Iowa's going to close the gap
with Penn State, they have to do it with talent. That's where it needs to start. We can talk about
conditioning. We can talk about the gas tank. we can talk about the aggressiveness and the different elements of the sport that many people believe need to be there.
But A number one, it comes down to talent and the top level talent.
Now I think an argument can be made that Penn State has done a better job of developing
their talent and getting some of their guys that look like, and maybe he's an All-American,
and turning them into national champions,
turning them into guys that are fighting to get up there
in the podium earlier in their career.
That's one thing that I think Penn State
has done a really good job,
coupled with what they do with the elite level guys.
And those guys at the elite level hit the ground running
and they're good right away.
And they're ready to go right away.
And that's how
they've built this chasm that has been created between Penn State and
everybody else. That's what they do. But this is good news. It can't end here. I
cannot just be happy getting Bo Bass and said, all right, all right, we got
number one wrestler. There needs to be that depth. It goes without saying that this cannot be the end,
that there needs to be more that goes into it,
but for tonight, it feels good.
And Coach Manning is going to bring over his squad from Nebraska
on Friday night.
It'll be a charged up environment.
I know the Carver fan base is going to be pretty excitable.
I think on Friday night that should be a fun one,
gearing up and shaping up for Nationals.
What this team can be going into Big 10, still got to meet against Oklahoma
State, get to see David Taylor at the end of the season.
But it's about putting themselves in contention to maybe something crazy
happens. You never know. That's why you go, right?
That's why you lace them up.
That's why you go out there and compete.
And these guys will compete.
Last Friday was frustrating.
But a bit of good news was definitely necessary.
Another component to it is the rumors that were out there about the NIL deal that Bo
Bassett was getting.
And even before his commitment on Monday, when he had cut it to his final four schools
The term that I was throwing around five million dollars in NIL
to Bobass it
Now people that I believe with a deeper knowledge of NIL funding in wrestling and I was in incredibly good shape by the way
Says that number is quite a bit off.
Maybe cut that thing in half.
Probably even more than that.
Money's there.
Money's not an object.
And now Tom and Terry brands need to figure out how they're going to structure
this roster, what they're going to do going forward and how they're
going to cut down Penn State.
It's not over because still got to lace them up, but it's going to be a tall task.
It's about more big picture.
It's looking at that class of 2026 and what else you're going to add outside of Basset.
Steve Mako's son, which makes me feel incredibly old.
He's down there, a bigger guy, obviously. You know,
Steve, you can understand that. And got a couple of twins from Kentucky that are high-level
guys that I was involved in. They're involved with a bunch. Get the talent. And whatever
direction you need to do to make it happen, it's different. Now Now the way that Penn State was able to build their roster before. Those advantages are changing
they're evolving. And Iowa should be in good shape. Now
you have to take that final step. We'll take one final step
over to the hardwood. Back to basketball this time on the
women. Huge match up for them as they go to Minnesota tonight.
A match up in the bar and we'll talk about it. What's it gonna take for Iowa women to
make it four wins in a row as we come back on the Locked On
Hawkeyes podcast.
Welcome back one final time. It's Locked On Hawkeyes. Thanks
for being with us and making Locked On Hawkeyes your first
listen every day. So, Iowa makes the road trip up to the on Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen
every day. So Iowa makes the road trip up to the barn tonight. It will be a matchup
against the Minnesota team that is much improved. And I think we have to start right there.
This Minnesota team, the last couple of years have fallen on hard times and they're improved. A big part of that is a couple
of new players that have come in, a couple of players that have come home amongst them in the
middle and the biggest one there is at the center position with Sophie Hart. So Sophie Hart comes
back from NC State. She's a Minnesota girl and she's back out there. Now Sophie Hart is not a traditional six foot five player for her size. She's not a great rebounder
by any means. In fact, this averages about four rebounds per game. And that's something overall.
I was a good rebounding team. Minnesota's okay. You just look at the record of Minnesota and say, oh, man, Iowa might be up against it here. And you do
always have to have to be a big concern about a letdown. Look,
that environment that they saw on Sunday won't be replicated
again this year. It won't. Senior Day will be a big one.
But it'll also be kind of a coronation. You're taking on a
crappy Wisconsin team. You're not going to see, I don't
think anything like that because even when we see UCLA and who at that time might be number one
undefeated UCLA come in, Caitlin Clark's not going to be having her jersey retired and there was just
a different kind of feel that was happening there. So you do have to worry about some letdown here
because they got to be ready to go.
Now, Minnesota's lost three out of four,
but also remember those losses were all to rank teams.
They were to Michigan, USC and UCLA.
This team that can score, battle's a really good player,
but Iowa has advantages in rebounding,
Iowa has advantages in shooting.
And I think it's as simple as this.
I joke a lot with basketball on my radio show.
You just show me the box score,
and if I could pick one thing
in today's environment of basketball,
doesn't matter if it's high school, college, pros, show me threes. I'll tell you who won.
Of course, it doesn't always happen that way. But very
simply, in this game, I think it'll be as simple as that. If
Iowa can shoot 35%, knock down eight, nine, 10, three pointers
in this game, shoot it relatively well from the outside.
I really like their chances.
I like the way they match up with this Minnesota team.
I think Minnesota, I don't wanna say fool's cool
cause that's not fair.
They've turned it around and put together really nice here.
But look at the depth of their schedule.
There just isn't a whole lot there.
And because of that, I really like the way that Iowa goes.
Knock down some threes, hit some shots, guard the three-point line, don't give up a bunch,
don't have the female Charles Buggs comes out for the Gophers that are the player out
of nowhere and knocks down a bunch like happens on the men's side seemingly every single year
against the Gophers.
Make that happen.
I think Iowa wins this one and I think they win it relatively comfortably.
And we go back to the five-game losing streak for them and you look at each one of those games individually,
boy, they'd have a lot of things go wrong
for them to have that five game losing streak.
They're better than what they looked like there.
Water seems to find its level.
And I think this Ible Women's Basketball team,
it's finding its level.
It was better than that team that we were scared
was gonna be on the wrong side of the bubble.
They're better than that. And they proved that Sunday. I think they're going to prove it again tonight. Let's get it done, get a big victory. We'll be back with you after that one. And we owe you a lot of football talk. That's coming up tomorrow. Locked on Hawkeyes. A look back at the week that was some big recruits. Iowa picking up a defensive back for the class of 2025 bolstering the class of
