Starting point is 00:01:25 hawkeye insider.com we'll get his perspective on the commitment of mark ornowski plus we got to talk about the disappointing effort i hear this evening from the iowa women as they fall on the road to illinois and boy i think some some major questions starting to brew here with this iowa squad just how good they are and just not a lot of people showing up for the Hawkeye team. Very disappointing effort at Illinois, a banked up Illinois team. We'll get into that. But a lot of comments coming in on the YouTube page, and that's where we get these comments here.
Starting point is 00:02:00 If you ever have any questions, of course, you can hit me up as well on social media at Trent Condon is where you can find me on Twitter, or you can hit me up also at LockedOnIowa with our official show count account is where you can find us over there. So just a few handful of questions that have been calling in or comments I think are some good jumping off points here over the last couple of days. Let's start things off with a little negativity. This is from Timothy Simmons, who seems like an angry, angry gentleman.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Complete clown Iowa fan base. So tired of this nonsense about coaches after every loss. This one came after the game against Wisconsin on Friday night. And what I would say to the people that believe that this is my reaction every time, you obviously haven't been following me for the last two decades as I've been on radio and doing this podcast as well here over the last three. That is not who I am. I am not reactionary.
Starting point is 00:02:59 I am not jump off a cliff after every loss. That's not who I am. Do I get frustrated? Absolutely. Are there times that I question big picture of the future of the programs? No doubt, but that's not the reaction that's there. And for anybody that knows and listens and for the everydayers and we salute each and every one of you out there that are listening to us every day, you know that that's not how I think of Fran McCaffrey. It took a long time to get to this point. Well, it took 16 years to get to this point that we are now.
Starting point is 00:03:29 And even with the comeback win against Nebraska, I don't think it paints big picture the concerns about this program. And I'm not alone. Look at the stands. Look at what you see at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Announced attendance 7,800. At best, there were 6,000 people in the building. That's what you have in a building
Starting point is 00:03:48 that seats 14,900 people, and you can't even get a half full. That's what we're dealing with here. This is a fan base that has checked out. This is not reactionary. This is just after a loss that we're going to freak out. That's not what we do here. Oh, we freak out a little bit after losses,
Starting point is 00:04:04 but not firing everybody. So, Tim, check yourself. You're dead wrong. Let's continue here with a couple more on the basketball front. He ain't going anywhere. And that's from Eli. We'll see. You know, speaking of Fran McCaffrey, if this season ends in the NCAA tournament, another maybe win gets to the round of 32, no sweet 16. Does Beth Getz have the ammunition? Does she have the equity to fire Fran McCaffrey? Fire Fran McCaffrey. And Fran McCaffrey will be a guy at that point that had made the NCAA tournament, what, eight of the last 11 years?
Starting point is 00:04:51 At a place like Iowa, that's difficult. That's better than Dr. Tom did. Remember, after what he inherited from George Ravely, which is completely different than obviously what Fran McCaffrey inherited from Todd Licklider. After the sophomore trio, Roy Marble, Ed Horton, B.J. Armstrong, when those guys departed, year after year, Iowa was a very average program.
Starting point is 00:05:18 And they didn't make a sweet 16 until his final year when they knew going into the season that his contract wasn't going to be renewed. I think we have this false sense of what that program was. It's back to basically the same level. And in the Big Ten, a little bit better, which is another crazy thing to think. We'll get into that a little bit later here a little more.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Speaking of, Fran McCaffrey talked about him checking out. Does it feel like he checked out? This one comes in from Bieberz99. He said he thought he checked out last year. I can't remember that, too. He seems different on the sideline, at the very least. Let's get into some football. This one comes from Bieberz as well, talking about Mark Gronowski and his commitment.
Starting point is 00:05:59 I heard they landed him for someone in the know for $2.7 million for next season. I heard they landed him for someone in the know for $2.7 million for next season. I can tell you that that number is dead wrong from the sources that I have talked to. That number is not particularly close to the number. In fact, the NIL budget for the football program basically all gobbled up with that number. So, no, that is not the number to be looking at. Your number is way, way off. But it's also a lot of money, and that's the going rate. And to get a quarterback, and to get a quarterback of the ilk of Mark Gronowski,
Starting point is 00:06:34 a guy that won the Heisman Trophy at the FCS level two years ago, incredibly accomplished, had programs after him, had an opportunity to move on and play in the NFL or at least get a shot to being drafted. That's what you have to do. And Iowa went out and got him. I would give him credit. We joked two years ago about Portal Kirk, right,
Starting point is 00:06:56 when he went out and got Cade McNamara, Nick Jackson, and Seth Anderson, all the guys. It was the nine guys that year. In a way, it was kind of tongue-in-cheek. But then you look at this year, and it's, again, slow going. Much like last season, fighting an offensive coordinator was a little bit slow going. His process is different. His process probably is frustrating for a lot of you out there, myself included.
Starting point is 00:07:21 But there is a method to his madness. And we see it play out again. There's another one in here. I want to find the question, but it was talking about, is Iowa better off with Mark Gronowski as opposed to getting Pribula? So Bo Pribula comes out of the portal.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Two years of eligibility. That's the main advantage that he has to me over Mark Gronowski. He's more athletic. He's certainly faster. I don't know if he's going to be a better runner. But the experience of Gronowski, the ability that he has shown to do it against high-level competition. Yes, he struggled in Kinnick Stadium coming off an ACL injury against that elite Iowa defense
Starting point is 00:08:07 a couple of years ago. Yes, we know that. However, he's grown a little bit since then. And if you watch him, you see a guy that's definitely taken a big step forward. This is for Maiden. It sucks we only get him for one year. Completely agree with that, Aiden.
Starting point is 00:08:21 This would be a nice win to have for a couple of seasons or maybe going back and having him over the last three seasons. That would have been pretty nice as well. Oh, here's the question. It came from Rex. Do you think we came out ahead with Gronowski rather than Pribula?
Starting point is 00:08:36 From the superficial research I've done, I think Gronowski is a better fit for the designs in our program. You know, one thing that I really like about Gronowski and what we've heard about him is the leadership qualities, is what he is as a leader going out there and playoff game. It's cold and brook in South Dakota and he's going sleeveless like his offensive lineman, right? Those little things. It just seems like a guy that gets it, a guy that understands. Now, you also have to temper, I think, your expectations in a way,
Starting point is 00:09:07 realizing that South Dakota State program, they're at an elite level. And taking on the Illinois States, the Missouri States, unfortunately the Northern Iowas of the world, you're going to be able to pile up some numbers. And there were plenty of guys in a lot of those games that you see running free. But you also see the tight window throws. And when you watch his ability to do that, to make those kind of plays, to be able to tuck it, put his head down, big physical kid.
Starting point is 00:09:38 6'3", 220 pounds, really like his footwork that you see in the pocket. There were times he saw, really over the last five years, came back to Merrill the last couple of years. We saw it, I think, a lot with Brennan Sullivan, and then going back with Petras and all the other unfortunate quarterbacks that they had when Petras was banged up or whatever. You saw terrible footwork.
Starting point is 00:10:04 You saw, well, they didn't have a quarterback coach, and that was a reason for it. And now you have one in Tim Lester, and you get excited about that. This one comes from Rick. I like how Lester's first-year offense was an improvement over the previous years. Have you felt that Brendan Sullivan, who he recruited, was the only quarterback needed?
Starting point is 00:10:21 He wouldn't have recruited Mark Gronowski. I cannot see any reason to go against his judgment. I'm with you. Tim Lester, definitely in year number one, the improvements that we saw, he has built up equity. We need to believe in this guy. He completely revamped this quarterback room, got another wide receiver, and we'll talk about a little bit more tomorrow, the kid from Chattanooga. It's just on and on and on. Really good stuff to get excited about with Lester. And he's not just resting on his laurels. This guy wants more. You know, the conversation I'm sure goes, you're at the bar, right?
Starting point is 00:10:57 Talking with your buddies. You're at tailgate. Who's going to be the next Iowa coach? And there's pie in the sky thinking. And there's all kinds of wild thoughts. And then you talk about the internal candidates. And is it Seth Wallace? Is it LeVar Woods?
Starting point is 00:11:09 Is it Tim Lester? Could Tim Lester be the guy that gets this job? I'll tell you what. If this passing game takes a step forward, he is a great communicator. He's incredibly enjoyable to listen to, to talk to. Hopefully this summer I'll get an opportunity to talk with him during some downtime and bring that podcast to you. I just really like the way that he explains the game,
Starting point is 00:11:33 and you can see why he's an effective recruiter. And how he nearly got Bo Pribula. And how he got Mark Gronowski. He can sell. And I'm really impressed by that, by the way. Sam Phillips, the name of the wide receiver from Chattanooga, that I was thinking of there. A lot of great questions, a lot of great comments.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Again, I look at them all. Some are mean, some are nice, but really enjoy it. A lot going on on that front. But we're going to talk some basketball and football coming up with David Eichold. Hawkeyeinsider.com does great work over there. If you're interested in the recruiting world, what's happening in the portal, he does a great job along with Sean Bach, and we got him coming up here talking a little bit of everything as we continue. Stay right there. We're talking

Rocketmoney.com slash locked on. Coming up next, we talk with David Eichold. BT on Expedia. Made to travel. Yeah, good morning. Good afternoon, guys. Yeah, good morning. Good afternoon, guys.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Yeah, it certainly is. We kind of caught wind about this a couple days ago, but as I told Trent off the air, we know how Fran McCaffrey feels about adjusting his roster mid-season because we've asked him through the last couple of years and he has kind of shot that down. So
Starting point is 00:14:21 for this to actually come into fruition, it's definitely interesting, but it also goes to show the value of keeping relationships and ending things on a cordial note, never knowing when the guy is going to be available again. So he can practice with the team the second semester. He'll be eligible to play next year. And what is he excelling guys? Rebounding and defense.celling, guys? Rebounding in defense. What does Iowa need? Rebounding in defense.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Outstanding. So what do you say about relationships? Iowa evidently was close the first time when he was going through the recruiting process. Yeah, it came down to Iowa and Miami. They were the final two schools for him. And, again, I don't know how things unfolded as far as the relationships go, but for him to kind of enter the portal, it became abundantly clear.
Starting point is 00:15:17 I think he knew exactly where he wanted to go, and Iowa must have reciprocated that feeling and accepted his commitment. So we know how Frank McCaffrey loves his versatile 6'7", 6'8", guys. He's a good athlete. I think this is a good get for Iowa. I don't know how immediately impactful he will be next year, but I'm very excited to kind of get the chance to talk to Fran about the addition, what he could potentially bring next year.
Starting point is 00:15:42 But, yeah, again, kind of a shock. But I think when you look at the way everything kind of unfolded over the past couple, maybe the past week for Iowa Athletics, they needed some big news to happen. Well, now they got Mark Gronowski. They come back from 15 down last night. And now they got a basketball transfer. Not too shabby of a 24-hour cycle, guys. It's starting to trend in a positive direction.
Starting point is 00:16:04 I need to continue. Take us into Carver last night. Boy, when they got down 15, Fran used that timeout. Now, it was just the Peacock cameras cut to a couple of different guys, but they looked dejected. They looked checked out. And that's one thing you don't have. I was gotten blown out.
Starting point is 00:16:19 You rarely see them check out as a team after Friday night's performance in the first 25 minutes and looked like that team checked out. So what happened? What ignited it, and how was it inside of Carver with less than half full? I'll tell you. The energy was really good when Iowa really started to make a run, when they finally got invested in it.
Starting point is 00:16:40 But I'd also look at this. I agree with you, Trent. I think the one thing we've said about frame McCaffrey teams and Iowa teams of the past, they never quit. Like they could be down 30. They're going to try to be able to make a run, right? When they got down by 15 last night and that timeout happened, I was talking to a couple of our colleagues and I just said, this is the season right here. Like they have to be able to find a way to punch back just because of how bad that loss was to Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:17:10 If you go out and lay an egg at home after that, people are checking out, not just people like fans are checking out. Who knows what the team's response is going to be like, et cetera. But to get in that timeout to immediately go on a five Oh run, get down to 10. That's when you saw the energy start to spike up. And then obviously we saw, I think the reverse Jared Utah from that game against Iowa state years ago, and he dropped 30
Starting point is 00:17:38 in the first half. I mean, Peyton Sanford was nil in the first 20 minutes of the game. Then to go out there, drop 30 in the final 25 minutes. There was that one span, Trent, where they cut it from, I think, 15 to 10 and then 10 to 4. It was based off Peyton Sanford threes. I'll give you a throwback of what it reminded me of. Not as crazy, but close. What about Justin Johnson? Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Against Indiana. Yeah. Back in the 2000s i mean everything he was throwing up was hitting ridiculous shot making obviously i would did end up going on to win but that was a gut check for the season i mean iowa has continued to battle through adversity no drew selwell who re-aggravated a lingering injury in pregame warm-up so Iowa had to adjust on the fly there no Cooper Koch the team cannot stay healthy but for Josh Dix to go out there play all but 22 seconds Peyton Sanford's second half and it's frustrating as Owen Freeman has been I think from time to time this season man he was big defensively in that overtime I think he really
Starting point is 00:18:41 really punched Nebraska in the mouth yeah I thought it was Peyton Sanford's where that double doinker off the front of the rim, off the top of the rim, through the bottom of the hoop. I thought that got him going in a big, big way, turning point, maybe in the game. But what was it about Peyton Sanford? I mean, that Utah thing is spot on, by the way. I forgot how crazy he went against Iowa State in that game. And it was totally reversed for Sanford. What was it? Was it just finally making that shot and getting that proverbial monkey off his back?
Starting point is 00:19:10 And maybe that was the shot of adrenaline and confidence that he needed? Yeah, and I think a couple things worth noting, too. We were talking about Peyton Sanford, right? And the second half is ridiculous, Not taking anything away from that. But Josh Dix was the only reason why they were in that game going into the second half. He was absolutely spectacular. And the stat line he put up was crazy. Put every second of that game on his NBA highlight reel and his tape
Starting point is 00:19:39 because that's how rare of a performance that was. When we asked Peyton Sanford after the game, he simply said, I've had about 15 threes this year go in and out or halfway in and just end up bouncing out. He said, once I finally saw one of those go in, he just said, I was back. And he talked about it with us that going into halftime, he was very upset, told his team he was going to go to the bathroom. He ended up just going back, reading a few Bible verses
Starting point is 00:20:08 and some notes to himself and kind of just took solace and peace. And that's when he went out there, was aggressive, looked for a shot. Once he saw that first one kind of fall, that's when it ended up happening. But yeah, just an incredibly rare performance from Peyton Sanford. And obviously I think between Josh Dixon, Peyton Sanford, I think they're the first Iowa duo since 2022 to have 30 plus. And I think they were the second big 10 duo in the past 15 years to have 30 points a piece.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Let's get into Mark. Now, he talks some football before we run out of time with you, David Eichel, joining us from 24-7 Sports. We've been waiting and waiting and waiting. Any idea why it drug out as long as it did?
Starting point is 00:20:54 Yeah, I mean, I think a couple other teams were trying to get in the picture. Oh, really? Yeah, I mean, it shouldn't be surprising. I thought USC was going to make a run at him. I wouldn't have been surprised if Miami was going to try to do something. We know how deep their pockets are, but Gronowski is a different kid. Like he was, it was always going to, I stand by this. It was always going to be the NFL or Iowa, right? Because he's from three hours away. He's very, very close with his family.
Starting point is 00:21:21 He dreamed of playing in the big 10. I will recruit him a little bit out of high school. Tim Lester recruited him out of high school and he was at Western Michigan as well. There were longstanding relationships there. So I think those are the hiccups from some things I'm hearing. But again, as I wrote my column yesterday, guys, there's three things that really separate Iowa from the NFL. One, Kirk Bar, his connections to the NFL and the old reputation he has with NFL personnel to Tim Lester's offensive mind and him knowing the NFL schemes and knowing Rick can run an NFL offense, knowing he can be the difference maker and free the swarm collective.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I mean, they, they spared no expense. I don't know what the exact number to get Mark Gronowski, but they spared no expense. And he was very receptive to the pitch they had. So it was the culture, it was the schemes and it was Iowa swarm collective that ultimately decided to
Starting point is 00:22:11 push Mark Gronowski to come back for another year of college football. And even if he decided to go to the NFL, I really don't think that would have been an indictment on Iowa. The guy has played five years of college. I guess some point, like you either want to take your shot or not. And I guess he felt it was best if he waited another year to take his shot to go to the league.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Levin apparently got $3 million to come back to Arizona State. Do you have any ballpark? I mean, were we talking seven figures for Gronowski? I would be very surprised if it was not seven figures wow unbelievable i again i i don't know this i'm purely speculating i don't want to speak on behalf of brad heinrich right warm or anyone else i would my best guess would be about 1.25 or 1.5 million i would probably say more toward one and a half isn't that something yeah yeah yeah yeah so last thing for you, David Eichel.
Starting point is 00:23:06 David Eichel, 24-7 Sports, HawkeyeInsider.com. Unless, Trent, you have a follow-up. Just back to the Miami basketball transfer. Trent and I both kind of thought that McCaffrey's shelf life was, you know, nearing expiration. Does this maybe reset the meter? I mean, how do you look at that if indeed you were on the same train of thought as Trent and I were that Fran McCaffrey might not be here next year?
Starting point is 00:23:33 Does this lead you to believe that he's not going anywhere? You know, I just don't think he wants to pigeonhole himself into a decision. Right? If he can control the walk away or to come back to Iowa for another year, I don't think he wants to set himself up for failure if he decides to continue being Iowa's basketball coach next year. So he's going to continue to do the job like he's planning for the long-term future.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And again, I think at this point, it's a lot of speculation. I think from a timing standpoint, it would make sense. Yep, me too. Just when you think about Jack McCaffrey going to play at Butler, you think about Connor coaching at Butler, the entire family's kind of over in the Indianapolis area. But Fran also still has a fire to coach. He still loves coaching.
Starting point is 00:24:14 He still loves the relationships that he has with his players. And that's the one thing I think gets overshadowed from time to time. There are very few, if any, former Fran players that will say an ill word about him, despite what you know, you were me might say are the national media or everyone else. I think that shows a lot that he has had the respect of guys in that locker room, whether people agree with the way he does things or not, every single player would go to war for him. And I also think it's worth noting. you've got to think about how much money Josh Dix probably could have gotten
Starting point is 00:24:47 in the transfer portal. Think about how much money Owens Freeman could have gotten in the transfer portal. What about Peyton Sanford coming back for another year? I guarantee you all three of those guys took not just a little bit of a pay cut, but a significant pay cut because they want to play for Fran McCaffrey. And I think that says a lot about him too. David Eichold, HawkeyeInsider.com, part of 24-7 Sports. David, as always, thanks for doing this for us.
Starting point is 00:25:10 We'll speak with you in a couple of weeks. Thank you, David. Thanks, guys. Always appreciate you. Take care. Good to talk to you, David Eichold, as we check in on the Hawks. All right. Trent Conner back with you one final time here.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Locked on Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us. And we take a look back at the Iowa women's basketball game here from this evening as Iowa falls on the road to Illinois, 62-57. The Illini get the win. Iowa now falls to 2-3 in the Big Ten. And Indiana come to town over the weekend for both the men on Saturday and the women on Sunday. It was a performance that was pretty dreadful.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Now, watching it on BTN+, watching it on my phone as I had the orange bowl also on, um, I'm sure I missed some things, but very frustrating. Watch. They turn it over again, 18 times. And it's not just turnovers. It's not just the physical turnovers. At times you can live with physical turnovers, right? You make a mistake.
Starting point is 00:26:28 A player swipes you. They get the hand in there, they get a steal. It's the unforced turnovers. It's the dumb plays. That's what drives you absolutely crazy. And maybe we've been spoiled. We were spoiled by Kaitlyn Clark. And yes, she had turnovers. But a lot of times some of those turnovers went on her teammates. But going from watching Kaitlyn over the last four years to watching this now, it's frustrating. It really is.
Starting point is 00:27:02 5 of 20 from the 3 point line 8 of 17 under 50% from the free throw line look this is an incredibly winnable game and this schedule is going to get more difficult in the coming weeks for the Iowa women's basketball team this was supposed to be the time that they made a little bit of hay, that they got some hay in the barn right and they haven't been able to do it.
Starting point is 00:27:27 And now with another tough, difficult opponent, though Indiana's not what they've been in the last couple of years, but still what awaits them, I think it could get tricky. They've been struggling with turnovers all year long, and it's more of the same. And now they go with Guyton in the starting lineup.
Starting point is 00:27:47 She didn't play great. Really the only two that played well were Lucy Olsen, who continues to do her thing, had a couple of three-pointers early on, and Hannah Stolke. And I like what I saw from Hannah at times where she'd get the ball in the post and she'd wait, not going too fast, slowing things down.
Starting point is 00:28:05 But overall, Iowa doesn't get a bucket the last three minutes of the game. No field goals overall. Digging into the numbers a little bit deeper. It was bad. 1-4 for Mufalter from the floor. Vierbach, 1-4. 1-4 for Guyton. Off the bench.
Starting point is 00:28:23 McCabe hit a couple of three-pointers. That's good. Need that from her. Stremlow, a couple of buckets. Also had three rebounds. Really like her game. Where was Ava Hyden? Ava Hyden, let's see the minutes here. Two minutes in the game?
Starting point is 00:28:41 Addison O'Grady coming off the bench. She was minus 11 in plus minus. She goes 1-3 from the floor. one to two from the free throw line 13 rebounds from stulkey for five turnovers from olsen four turnovers from stulkey four turnovers from guyton you can't have it you just can't and i don't know at this point we're in January now we're the second week in January what more buttons you can push we talked about getting a freshman in there getting those freshmen some more run two minutes for Ava Hyden five minutes for Mulaney I don't
Starting point is 00:29:20 get it comes with the territory. Love Jan Jensen. One of the nicest people you'll ever meet. But the coaching chair is also going to come with some criticism. And the turnovers that continue to be there, the same problem this deep into the season, that's a concern. We'll see. You can turn it around. This Big Ten is better than it's been in past seasons.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Not only the top end talent that you have, the Maryland, USC, UCLA, but I think the middle is a lot better than it's been in the past as well. And I was amongst those middle teams. And you lose a game like this, Illinois down a couple of players. It's a bad one. Bad losses piling up. Is this a tournament team? Yeah, they are. But is this a team that's going to be hosting the first two rounds,
Starting point is 00:30:12 which means the top four seed, the top 16 team in women's college basketball? I don't think it's close. Not the squad we're seeing right now.
