We'll get to that later on. We're going to talk a little wrestling today. We'll get to that later on. We're going to hit the women's basketball loss from on Sunday afternoon into the evening against Indiana. The men's dominating performance against the Hoosiers on Saturday night. Great to see a decent crowd at Carver Hawkeye Arena in that one. And got to see a lot of the alumni back, which was really cool to see.
Starting point is 00:01:23 And a lot of the letter winners for the men's basketball program. Plus, we got to figure out, should we be freaking out about this Mark Gronowski injury, the surgery that he's going through? I understand. A lot of angst out there, and we're going to get to that here in just a little bit. But let's start things off with the positive of the basketball weekend, and that was the men's performance against Indiana on Saturday night. Now, it starts with just the environment.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Yes, it's not 15,000 strong like it was. The capacity is now under 15,000. But growing up, 15,500, Carver, Hawkeye, Arena, it was regardless of who they were playing. It was going to happen every single time. Not the case anymore. So I have to live with that. I have to understand it. But still going to happen every single time. Not the case anymore. So I have to live with that. I have to understand it. But still, the crowd was into it. It felt like a good crowd. It was good to see. And Iowa was just able to put big run after big run together. And after having
Starting point is 00:02:17 an 18-2 run early in the game, it looked like Iowa was going to put them away. Here comes Indiana, comes roaring back. They give up the lead. The frustrations definitely were building at that time, but Iowa with a just absolutely tremendous response. And that was, I think, one of the best parts of this game. Yeah, there are a lot of statistics that you can point at, a lot of numbers, and we'll get to them here momentarily that are eye-opening, to say the least. But the ability to bounce back like that
Starting point is 00:02:44 after having a six, seven minute stretch where he's just playing some awful, awful basketball, another questionable lineup. Um, it just, the offense was really bogged down and in Indiana got hot. And instead of tucking their tail, they responded. Now you look at Iowa right now, there're 3-2 in the Big Ten. Remember, all three of those wins, though, have come at Carver. And Iowa's going to have to prove that they can win games away from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. I mean, we've seen this with plenty of bubble teams in the past,
Starting point is 00:03:18 that if you haven't shown an ability to win on the road, you're not going to be a tournament team. So Iowa still has to prove that. They'll have plenty of opportunities, including late in the year, as we've talked about a lot here every day. As you know, I've been harping on this end of season schedule. It's going to be incredibly difficult. Those last seven games are as tough as you're going to find, coupled with the travel that's going to be there, but we'll get to that. Back to the game. Resilient at the end of the first half. Love to see that. And then they just put them away, right?
Starting point is 00:03:47 Just gave them absolutely no opportunity as they come out with a 13-2 run to begin the second half. And it was game over. And then it became a laugher. And guys making plays. Boy, that Indiana outfit. We have realized and we have learned. Indiana came into
Starting point is 00:04:04 this one 4-1 in the Big Ten, by the way, and they just look dreadful. We know that Fran McCaffrey and Mike Woodson, probably not on each other's Christmas card lists, two coaching staffs that have bickered. We've seen Woodson and Fran go back and forth a little bit. I just continually am baffled how this guy is there. I know he's a lump, but goodness gracious. The talent that they have, the dudes that they have brought in, the amount of money that they have invested, and this is what you get?
Starting point is 00:04:35 Good luck to them. Back to what we care about, the Hawkeyes. A lot of great numbers here. Starting with another double-double for Brock Harding. Ten points, 10 assists. Most importantly, one turnover. And after Brock Harding turned it over a little bit too much in the game against Nebraska to bounce back after the sixth turnover performance, great to see out of him. Great to see, maybe most importantly, the return of Drew Thelwell. I've made my statement about Drew Thelwell, and he is the reason that this team feels
Starting point is 00:05:09 different. Seeing him early in the game, just imploring the fans to get on their feet, right? And just trying to get anything out of this fan base. Let's go. Let's get it going, right? And he's that guy. He's that emotional leader. He's a dang good basketball player too. The upgrade that they made at the second guard spot from Tony
Starting point is 00:05:31 Perkins to Drew Thelwell is immense because not only do you have a guy that has the passion that you see from Thelwell, a guy that plays both ends of the floor. It feels like he's the perfect type of guy for what Iowa needed. They needed a little bit of that passion, that physicality. All the things that Drew Thelwell brings to the stage. Just love what we're seeing out of him. Peyton Sanford again, going off. They're going to have to have this. As we talked about after the Nebraska game, Iowa goes as Peyton Sanford goes.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Is Peyton Sanford going to develop into the NBA player? We'll see. But for the here and now, in his final go-around in a Hawkeye uniform, Peyton Sanford needs to play well basically against everybody. You look back at the losses, the losses are games where Sanford hasn't played well. It's as simple as that.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Josh Dix, a stud once again. Just so efficient. Four of five from the three-point line. And the crazy thing is, you know, Josh Dix is not what you'd consider a sharpshooter, right? He's not that dead-eye three-point shooter. He's incredibly good at it, but that's not what you think
Starting point is 00:06:43 because there's so many other elements to a game. And maybe it's because he is so good at the mid-range. He's good coming at it, but that's not what you think because there's so many other elements to a game. And maybe it's because he is so good at the mid-range. He's good coming off the curl and not just curling around it for a three-pointer, but actually turning the corner and getting to the elbow. He does a lot of old-school things that, I guess, make you think that, and there is more to his game than just that, but four or five from behind the arc. Look at his shooting splits now.
Starting point is 00:07:04 He's shooting a ridiculous 63% from two-pointers, 48% on threes, 95% at the free throw line. He's nuts. He's efficient. Need to continue to just time after time after time telling Josh Dix, be more aggressive because your aggressiveness is a good thing. Owen Freeman with the double-double, battling in there against Ballo. Told you he was going to be a load,
Starting point is 00:07:36 and you can see he definitely was inside off the bench, price plays. And we saw a little something again out of Lashie Tabali. And we talked about this one also at the beginning of the year. For Iowa basketball, I believe that Tabali, his best work and the way this team is constructed, is coming off the bench as a backup five. It just, it never worked out well with him and Freeman playing together up front. Now, Iowa gives up a ton. And when they go with this starting lineup, with Harding, with Delwell, Peyton Sanford, Dix, and Freeman,
Starting point is 00:08:12 it's not a great rebounding group. On a team that's not very good rebounding, you're giving up power, you're giving up size. But DiBale, at least for his role, that's when it's at its best. Eight minutes out of Traore, still waiting. The guy that we saw before the ankle injury has not come back and still waiting for that guy. Because that is the kind of guy that is going to help this team win a game down the stretch.
Starting point is 00:08:39 He's going to help them push across the finish line against a physical team. They need the Sadio Traore that I think we've seen glimpses of so far. But can he do it in a role where he's not playing 25 minutes a game? He's playing 12, 14. We'll see about that. Just eight minutes for Traore in the game as more and more free. And he relies really on the six guys. The starting lineup and Sanford, Dembali a little bit, a little bit Traore.
Starting point is 00:09:04 That's it. That's okay. Certainly if you play like this, this is okay. the six guys. The starting lineup, Anne Sanford, Dembale a little bit, a little bit, Traore, that's it. That's okay. Certainly if you play like this, this is okay. So Iowa has departed now for California. They'll get ready for Tuesday night against USC. That'll be a late tip-off, 9.30 Central time for the matchup against the Trojans, and then scheduled to play Friday night against UCLA. UCLA campus has been the one more impacted, at least the area, by the wildfires out there. Doesn't appear to be any major concern about the game being played Tuesday against USC. The bigger concern would be Friday against UCLA,
Starting point is 00:09:36 and there's potential talk of if they need to, they could move that game somewhere else, including maybe moving it to USC's campus and their arena there. So that's what's in front of us coming up this week. Iowa needs to pile up wins. The schedule is tough. At the end, you have to pile up these victories.
Starting point is 00:09:53 You're looking at this road trip, at minimum, a split. Now, USC is as crazy as a team as you're going to find. We're going to talk more about the Trojans here as we get ready for the game on Tuesday. But just got to tell you, this is a team that lost to a very average Cal team. They got blitzed by St. Mary's, who's good. They lost 71-36. Then the last time out Saturday, they go into Champaign and beat the Illini by double figures. I just, you can't wrap your mind around it. Now, Illinois didn't play without Jack Giannis, their stud point guard, the freshman. Still, the USC, Jekyll and Hyde team.
Starting point is 00:10:36 That's the more winnable of the two. But then he got UCLA. And Mick Cronin, he appears to hate his team. I don't know if you saw it last week, him calling out his squad, but it was not good. They've lost four out of five. Three consecutive losses in the Big Ten. Losses to Nebraska, Michigan, and Maryland. Also lost to North Carolina in that mix.
Starting point is 00:10:55 The one win over their last five was against Gonzaga. Figured that one out. Going to be interesting to see maybe the response from UCLA. Now they're scheduled to play against Rutgers coming up this evening, Monday night. They'll be playing that one before coming back home for the Friday matchup against the Hawkeyes. So that's what's in front of us here coming up this week.
Starting point is 00:11:17 We've got plenty of men's basketball. This team playing themselves back onto the right side of the bubble, according to what bracketologists you're looking at right now. I think it's still too early to dive real deep into that, but we'll take a gander, and we're going to do that a little bit more as we dive in more this week. The women's basketball team, it did not go nearly as well for them. We're going to talk about that, but coming up next,
Starting point is 00:11:41 let's talk some quarterbacks. Mark Gronowski, it was exciting. Iowa got the quarterback that they wanted out of the transfer portal, a guy that has won, a guy that fits their system, fits their style, and he's going to be, hold on, surgery for Mark Gronowski. That's next. This is Locked On Hawkeyes. Hawkeyes. Today's episode of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast is brought to you by our friends with TurboTax. This is a message from sponsor Intuit TurboTax.

Hey, hit that subscribe button while you're watching. Really do appreciate it on the YouTube side. Helps all those algorithms go our way. And if you're listening on the podcast side, five-star reviews. We need some more new good reviews up there. Got a lot of old bad ones.
Starting point is 00:13:43 We've upgraded. We got all the great internet going now. Yeah, it's still me. That's fine. But if you can help us out here, really would appreciate it. All right, let's get back into some football talk. And last week, the conversation, we waited and waited and waited. And finally, on Wednesday, Mark Gronowski, the former South Dakota State quarterback,
Starting point is 00:14:02 makes his commitment to the Hawkeyes. We get excited about it. Dude with 130 career touchdowns, rushing and passing combined. He's big. He's visible. He can make all the throws. And then we found out on Friday, the news dump comes that Mark Gronowski will not be available for spring practice. He is going to undergo surgery. Surgery that they didn't indicate what it was. They didn't indicate where it was. Now, remember, they don't have to. They don't have to disclose that information.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Eventually, it's going to get out. Eventually, we're going to find out what it was. And to me, it felt a little bit silly that that wasn't part of the press conference. Finding out was it a shoulder? Was it a knee? What it wasn't? Well, we found out upper body injury. Right. So that's what we got.
Starting point is 00:14:52 All right. Upper body injury. And that's what it is. Still, just overall, one of those things, Olivia. Shaking your head a little bit. Right. Just give us all the information. We're going to find out.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Let us know and we'll be good to go. That aside, I understand the people that have a lot of angst. So this is not me trying to talk you off the ledge or talk you down because I completely get it. You finally get this quarterback. Even if you're somebody that was a little bit more on the sense, you would have, like somebody else, you wonder about the transition, moving up from the FCS level to FBS, all those things.
Starting point is 00:15:30 And you were starting to maybe throw that leg up on the bandwagon just a little bit, and this comes down. Because we remember Cade McNamara. We remember how poorly this went. We remember the last time they went out, made a splash of the portal, and brought in guys that were damaged goods. And that is the question now for a lot of Hawkeye fans about Mark Gronowski. Is this guy damaged goods?
Starting point is 00:15:57 Did he have other big-time offers? Was what we heard about him contemplating going to the NFL draft. Was that real? It seems hard to believe that a guy that needed this kind of surgery to play next season at Iowa, that NFL evaluators, that NFL GMs, that the doctors employed by the NFL were not going to find this out, or that they were going to draft a guy NFL were not going to find this out? Or that they were going to draft a guy that was not going to be able to go through OTAs?
Starting point is 00:16:32 I get it. And there is a part of me that has the same concerns. Because one of the reasons I was so excited about this, and Mark Grodowski, is not just what he is, not just what evaluators believe that he's going to be and what he can be for this Iowa team. It was that he was going to be there for spring ball because we didn't get that last year. Remember, spring practice a year ago was Deacon Hill running the ones and Marco Lyon as the twos and threes because that's all they had. And we now go into this spring with Hank Brown coming in from Auburn. Brennan Sullivan coming back for another year.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Jackson Stratton. And then what we anticipate the starter, Mark Gronowski. We're going to see these guys slinging it around. Gronowski's going to take command of the offense and off we're running. Now we wait to June. Now we wonder. Now, here's another thing that I have been completely baffled by. The people that think that Iowa got swindled here, that Brad Heinrichs and the Swarm Collective got taken a task by Mark Gronowski and his people.
Starting point is 00:17:47 That the University of Iowa, the staff, the football program, their medical experts, didn't know that Mark Gronowski needed to go under the knife. That this was something that was going to happen, or at least likely to happen. Come on. We have to believe a little bit more than that, don't we? I would hope so. I would hope that this cockamamie theory, that Iowa got absolutely swindled,
Starting point is 00:18:19 the wool pulled over their eyes again, like a Caden Proctor, like Caden McNamara. That it happened in this one, I'm dubious of that thought. I think this is all above the board. It's not a great thing, and I'm not going to paint it as a great thing. You want him out there. You want him getting reps. He is now going to a program where it's all new receivers.
Starting point is 00:18:44 We talk about timing a lot. Remember, that was the excuse both at the beginning of this season and the beginning of last season is, well, you know, just got to work out those wrinkles a little bit. There wasn't spring practice. Came back to Maryland, missed back-to-back spring practices. And now Mark Gronowski is going to miss spring practice. In an offense where timing really matters, spring practice, in an offense where timing really matters, in the Shanahan offense, that is a definite miss. I get it.
Starting point is 00:19:13 I get the angst. I understand the frustration because I have some of it too. You want Mark Gronowski out there, and it's not going to happen. And then they say, well, ready in June. We got another part of that too, right? Another part where you're just left wondering, is it really June? What if June turns to July? What if there's a setback? What if the rehab is not going at the direction? Then, well, then we'll be freaking out. That is the football side of things.
Starting point is 00:19:48 We got lots more to get into. What else does Iowa need in the transfer portal? We're going to talk about that later this week because they better not be done. There is still plenty to be done, especially now on the defensive side of the football. They went out, they added depth at the defensive tackle spot. That was an absolute necessity. What else does Iowa need? They got Phillips of the football. They went out, they added depth at the defensive tackle spot. That was an absolute necessity. What else does Iowa need?
Starting point is 00:20:08 They got Phillips, the receiver. They got Gronowski, the quarterback. I still think there is a huge, huge area that Iowa needs in the transfer portal. We'll talk about that later in the week. Wrapping things up, more basketball talk. We get into the Iowa-Indiana women's side. Jan Jensen, year number one, not going well. And for the first time in seven years, the Iowa women's basketball team has lost three consecutive
Starting point is 00:20:32 games. Plus, we'll talk a little wrestling when we come back. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Today's episode of Locked on Hawkeyes is brought to you by Game Time. Starting point is 00:22:30 We're with you each and every day A lot going on this week It's going to be a busy one We got you covered at all angles We'll get into some Iowa wrestling here momentarily But first, a look back at the women's basketball program Now their third straight loss for the first time in seven years. And happening in year number one of the Jan Jensen era, I think, creates a lot of frustration.
Starting point is 00:22:52 New coach, new style, new ideas. It's not going very well. Jan Jensen now finds herself in an incredibly difficult spot. Because we see the young freshmen of this squad. We see what they have been able to deliver from Aaliyah Guyton, who's been absolutely incredible coming off an ACL tear. Ava Hyden in spots, it's been really good. And boy, got a couple of tough calls against her inside today. I thought she was better than even the stat line said.
Starting point is 00:23:27 You got Taylor Stremlow, who's filling up the stat sheet, doing a little bit of everything. Eight rebounds in the game, seven points, knocks down a three-pointer, has four assists, just doing everything. And that's what they need out of Stremlow, and she's that kind of player. Tegan Mullaney didn't shoot it well here tonight, but we've seen Mullaney do good things for this team.
Starting point is 00:23:46 So you got this group of freshmen, and then off the bench, the best player in the game today was Taylor McCabe. And Taylor played maybe her best game of the season. We know what an outstanding shooter that she is, and that's how she played well, was shooting. But it was more than that. She was pulling defenders off, coming off those screens.
Starting point is 00:24:03 I thought she played well onto the defensive end, not just a steal that led to a three-pointer. She was pulling defenders off coming off those screens. I thought she played well onto the defensive end, not just a steal that led to a three-pointer. She was out there. She was competing. And I've been surprised this year. I thought there was going to be more minutes for Taylor McCabe than there has been. I think you need to continue to go that way.
Starting point is 00:24:18 So we're talking about this many players off the bench. Excuse me. And then we go to the starting lineup. Kyler Fielbach is struggling. She really is. She only played nine minutes in the game. Nine minutes with a plus minus of minus 16. That's almost impossible to do.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Lucy Olsen. Just 23 minutes in the game. This is the big addition. This is who they went out and got. This is top of the fold. Who they wanted, their transfer portal addition. Lucy Olsen, it certainly wasn't going. Now, I was surprised. I was surprised she wasn't out there more during the fourth quarter. But they went a lot more with Guyton. Eddie O'Grady is Eddie O'Grady, right? Inside got position she's going to finish.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Still just three rebounds in the game. And then Hannah Stolke. Another struggle from her. I wonder with Stolke if at this point it's time to play her at center. Go that direction. And if it means putting Guyton in the starting lineup, go in that direction. Put McKay back in there, go in that way. But something has to change because you got the veterans that are struggling. You got the youngsters
Starting point is 00:25:43 that still aren't ready to be playing major minutes at 25, 30 minutes. I don't think we're seeing that really out of many of the players right now out of that freshman group. And you're trying to bridge the new regime with Jan Jensen taking over for Bluter. It's a tough spot and it's not going well. And I was going to find some wins themselves because things get pretty precarious quickly when you look at what they have going forward and now with their third consecutive loss in the big 10 sitting in 12th place in the conference and look what's still coming up. Yeah. This team who we talked about maybe potentially
Starting point is 00:26:27 fighting to be in the top 16 and getting one of the top four seeds in a region and with it being able to host a Carver Hawkeye Arena is not off the board. There's still a ton of basketball left. However, this looks like nothing close to this team. Nebraska comes in Thursday. Then you make the road trip out to Oregon and Washington hope for Northwestern and then that big one to kick off February on the 2nd with USC and Juju Watkins coming in and Juju Watkins will be there, Kaitlyn Clark will also be there
Starting point is 00:26:57 now she won't be playing unfortunately for the Hawkeyes but that's what's coming up for this team Jan Jensen, it's a tough spot. Have to figure it out, though, because things are not going well. Hey, I mentioned a little wrestling here. We're going to talk about this more. We're going to bring in, find an expert on the wrestling side. Watch a lot of wrestling.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I enjoy wrestling. Haven't been into it nearly as much this year as I've been in past years. At times, you run out of time. And wrestling has been one for me that has fallen back. But as we look at the dual schedule coming up here on the back half, really, I think it's going to ramp up in a big-time way. Excited to see what this team can do. Plenty of new faces out there. Plenty of veterans as well. Drake Ayala got things started. He was really good today against Wisconsin. They blanked him 45-0 and just an absolute sheer domination against the Badgers. So we'll see what this
Starting point is 00:27:48 squad. I mean, it all comes down to can they run down Penn State for a national championship? You can say it's not fair, but it is reality and that's what the Iowa wrestling program is. Second place, first loser. Is there a path? We'll talk about that here in the coming weeks
Starting point is 00:28:06 And get into a little bit more Iowa wrestling But good to see a dominating performance A couple of tech falls in there Really good to see the action continuing For this wrestling team And there's some dudes Definitely And some of those youngsters
Starting point is 00:28:18 Going to be fun to watch What do they do? Some of the upper weights too With Ferrari As he didn't go today, it was Gabe Arnold that went out there. Lots still to figure out. And while we talked about J.N. Jensen,
Starting point is 00:28:31 tough spot for them, not as difficult of a spot for the Braves, but still figuring out those right combinations and trying to thread the needle, if you will, to run down the Nittany Lions.
