You know the stars that are going to shine at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.
Today, we dive a little bit deeper.
Some of the unharalded players, but players that are going to make a big difference for the Hawkeyes in 2026.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ben, I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeyes.
podcast. Today's episode is brought to you by Fandual. Right now new customers can bet just $5 and get
$250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. Head to fandual.com to get started. We're going to take a
peek at the NFL draft on Friday night, a couple of Hawkeyes go, including Logan Jones to the Bears.
Love that one, no doubt about it. And Jennings Dunker feels like a great fit as he's making his way
to Pittsburgh in the host site of the NFL draft this season. We'll also talk about some of the
prospects and when they could hear their name called coming up on Saturday. Tom Kekert's going to join
us from hawkeye report.com. We'll get the latest on the basketball front from Tom. Also talk with
him a little bit about spring practice and some news and notes that have come in as we get ready
for the open practice on Saturday. But today we open the show taking a look at some of the more
less heralded players coming into spring practice. We've talked about the stars. We've talked about
the big position battles. And today we're going to dig a little bit deeper, guys that I still
still think are going to have potentially an important part for this Iowa football team coming up this season or maybe just some intriguing stories as we go through.
We talked about the 10 most intriguing.
This is a different tier of player, but important nonetheless coming up for this football season.
What a start at potentially the center position.
And as we've talked about Cade Piper making the transition to center, maybe has been a little bit slow.
Now he's been banged up during the spring as well.
But keep an eye on Kail Winter.
former walk-on, Waukeen Northwest kid called his games in high school.
And he's a guy that going back a couple of years, even early in his career,
certainly undersized at that time.
But he was a guy that's been getting a lot of praise.
We've certainly seen former walk-ons that have been able to go on and play in the
offensive line and play at a high level on the offensive line of the past.
So that's one I'm definitely keeping my eye on.
And if Cade Piper is not able to make that transition,
well, you're going to have a obviously dominant guard if he goes back to what he
played a year ago at the right guard position.
Maybe that says a lot about Kail Winter,
certainly one to keep an eye on.
Speaking of the offensive line,
Lucas Allgaier, now he is going to be
a tackle of the future. I don't think
there's any doubt about that, but in the here and now,
the likelihood that he's going to find himself
on the field this season
is going to be inside at one of
the guard spots. He's been practicing
a lot over there. We'll see, maybe
he can push Jack Dotsler also at the right
tackle. Young guy from the St. Louis area
that they're really excited about going to be
keeping an eye on Lucas Allgaier.
We've talked a lot about the lack of depth and the concern at the defensive tackle position.
We feel good about Bryce Hawthorne.
Let's talk about the other Bryce though.
Bryce Stevenson sounds like he was maybe a little bit slow to acclimate himself,
making that jump up and coming up to the high FBS level and playing Big Ten football.
But getting his feet underneath him a little bit at minimum,
you hope this is a guy that can come in right away and help you as part of a rotation.
but maybe a little bit more upside after understanding everything that has asked out of the offensive defense.
Iowa's, excuse me, defensive line with Bryce Stevenson.
Jacob Wallace, you know, we talked a lot about that defensive backfield.
And depending on the position, Jacob Wallace's name continues to come up.
Maybe it's at the cash position.
Maybe it says the number three cornerback as you feel pretty good about the top two at this point in time.
But he's a playmaker.
We saw that a little bit a season ago.
I think you're going to see a lot more Jacob Wallace coming up.
He's also going to be a big special teamer for Iowa coming up this season.
Now, again, I'm going to cheat a little bit like I did at the quarterback spot when we went through our top 10 players to watch on Saturday.
It's the punter battle, though, between Tanner Philpott and with Boston Everett.
Both those guys have different resumes, no doubt.
One guy coming from the D3 level.
Don't see that transition happen very often going from Simpson to Iowa, but it's at a punter spot.
And then the freshman coming in from Australia again as they tap in,
to that Australian pipeline,
Tori Taylor, Reese Dakin,
and now it'll be Boston Everett
and how those two guys look.
One that I just want to get eyes on
because we heard a lot of buzz is Xavier Stinson.
True freshman receiver in for spring camp.
He's got an opportunity,
maybe to find some rotational minutes.
And speaking of wide receiver,
I want to see Stinson,
just want to see some of the hype
that's been along with them is Jared Bowie.
Jared Bowie, who did not play at all a season ago,
I think all of us anticipated he was going to enter into the transfer portal, not the case.
And he showed some glimpses when he played early in his career.
Definitely think Jared Bowie is going to be a guy to keep an eye on and see if there's a little bit of juice, certainly there for him.
Back over to the defense and the defensive line, specifically this time outside.
Yes, we've talked about Yose Apenessa.
And of course, the bloodlines and everything that goes along with that.
Kenneth Meriwether, a guy that's seen a lot of playing time already in his career and now transitions in.
to a starter. I want to get some eyes on Drew Campbell. Younger brother of Jack Campbell, he is a
defensive lineman, saw him at high school a little bit, really liked what you saw out of him. He's
been banged up early in his career, but it's been a name that continues talking to some people here
over the last couple of weeks that seems to be popping a little bit more. And we'll see what
Drew Campbell can do here, hopefully with a healthy season in front of him. The running back room
is incredibly deep. But with another injury to Brevin Dahl, here's Brayden Jackson, who came in
as a walk-on. The son of former NFL great Fred Jackson saw him at Ankeny Centennial,
a whole bunch during his career, always liked the way that he worked. And to get him as a walk-on,
I thought was an incredible coup for the Iowa football team and that coaching staff to get him there.
He's another guy that continues to pop. And yes, you're going to have L.J. Phillips come in from
South Dakota. Obviously, Kamari Moulton, the returning starter. We got to see a ton of Nathan McNeil.
We got to see a bunch of Xavier Williams. We've seen those.
guys, but when you dig a little bit deeper, I want to get my eyes on Braddon Jackson and see how he goes.
And finally, we talked about Drew Campbell on the defensive line. How about Joseph Anderson?
Just such an interesting kind of subject when you're looking through his high school tape.
He was a guy that did a lot of things on the track field, his dad, a former NFL player in Betty.
Joseph Anderson just intrigued by kind of his size, his skill set.
It's got that longer, lankier frame to him.
Definitely has the look of a track guy, how much weight he's been able to put on.
And if he can start to now battle for some reps in there as a red shirt sophomore, Joseph Anderson,
number 10 on my list of these under the radar guys to keep an eye on on Saturday.
Excited to get to Kiddick Stadium, get a look at what this is going to be.
And we'll have a full report for you, obviously coming up here on Locked on Hawkeyes.
Coming back on the other side, we're going to talk a little bit more spring football with Tom Kaker from Hawkeye.
Hawkeye Report.com. Also get his thoughts on the two latest commitments in the transfer portal from Iowa basketball.
We'll get his thoughts on Tyree Coleman, what they're going to get there. And of course, 7 foot three.
Oh, yeah, that goes a long ways. Tom Kekert joins us next as we continue Lockheyes.
The NBA playoffs are here and every possession matters. Every matchup is magnified and every game can swing a series.
Right now, fan duels giving new customers a great way to get on the action. And I love it.
You can bet just $5 and get $250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
The app makes it easy to follow the action.
Player stats, trends, matchups all in one place.
And during the playoffs, that extra insight really matters when you're looking at stars,
role players, and key moments.
It just makes the entire playoff experience more engaging from start to finish.
We got a big one coming up just north of us in Minnesota.
Coming up with game four, the Timberwolves and the Nuggets.
Oh, that is going to be so good.
can Joker bounce back after Rudy O'Barre had him and a blender.
Looking forward to that.
You can jump on player props, individual game, even look at the futures market for the NBA.
Head to Fandual.com to get started today.
That's Fandualt.com.
Fanduel, play your game.
Here's Tom Kekert.
Tom, Kekert, how are you?
Doing well.
How are you guys?
Doing okay.
Look, before we get to football, just because when you joined me, Trent was off last week, as you recall,
you kind of hinted around like this might be a productive weekend from a Collum's basketball team.
And boy, it sure turned out to be, right, with the back-to-back announcements over the last weekend.
We talked about your message boards kind of getting impatient when it's going to happen, when's it going to happen.
And it happened, and I'm guessing that made the subscribers at Hawkeye Nation appeased them at least for the time being.
How about that?
Yeah, everybody kind of calmed down after they got the two guys.
So I think they're excited about Tyree Coleman and getting the big fella, 7-3, Andrew McKeever.
I think that's kind of what they were looking for.
So we'll see if they end up going after anybody else or if they kind of wait to see what happens with Tavion Banks.
Because they've got one spot left.
You can have 15 on the list.
So, you know, total players.
and they're at 14 right now.
You look at the counting stats for both the guys,
8.9 rebounds for McKeever.
You see, obviously, Coleman,
what he did as a freshman in the Missouri Valley.
But one thing that really jumped out is looking at,
you know, Hoops Guru and some of the deeper analytical sites
is both of these guys play at an elite level in pick and roll.
What has Ben McCollum like to do?
Pick and roll.
It's not just about those counting fat.
When you look deeper and you look at just the way
that they fit in the system,
these feel like really good pickups to me, Tom.
That's the thing that jumped out at me was,
especially with McKeever,
with his size and,
you know,
just bulk and just natural height.
In that screen roll game,
he's going to be really effective
rolling down the lane and it's going to be tough to handle.
So,
yeah,
I like what they have there.
And Coleman,
it just seems like the arrows just pointing up.
Now,
I know people point out,
well,
they both,
you know,
McKeever only started 10 games and Coleman was coming off the bench most of the time,
but I'm just like, look, the arrows point out for Coleman, for sure.
You know, he dumped 17 on Auburn and the NIT semi-final game.
And he just looks like kind of a tough kid that's going to keep getting better.
And remember, he's just a freshman.
So he's, you know, got three more years left.
McKeever's got two years left.
So they'll have an opportunity to really develop those guys.
And just having McKeever, I mean, you go back to that Illinois game.
And it was 5150 with about seven minutes left.
And they just dumped it into the Vich, you know, three times, two or three times in a row and scored.
And that was at the end of the game.
That's where the game flipped.
And Iowa had nothing to do, had nothing to counter seven two.
Now they do.
And that's going to make a big difference for him, I think, next year.
Plus, he's a really good offensive rebound.
his offensive rebound, right, led the country.
Tom, as we switched to football,
I think another tentacle of the transfer portal not opening after,
you know, early May as it's done in the last couple of years,
with that no longer being an option.
I couldn't tell in the past of coaches were just blowing smoke off,
up a player's skirt or not because they wanted to stick around.
You know, you'd hear about a position battle and, well, this guy's good buddy.
I can't overlook this guy because he's real.
Well, you don't know if that was true, right?
you're just trying to keep them from transferring or not because they had that option.
Now when it come to the quarterbacks this year, I believe it more so that both quarterbacks are having a good spring
because you don't have to, you know, tell a fib to try and keep your player as part of your program.
Quarterback battle tomorrow and listening to Tim Lester earlier in the week,
were you surprised maybe it's as close as Lester kind of believes that it is?
Not really. I've kind of heard that all spring that it was kind of bouncing back and forth.
I think the thing that interested me was Lester said that, what was that Hank Brown had more explosive plays, like 29 of them.
And that's kind of running counter to the narrative that everybody has, that Heklinsky's the gunslinger.
He's going to make the explosive plays where it's maybe it's Hank Brown.
And, you know, I've had some people tell me that, you know, if they played this Saturday, if they were playing a real game, Hank Brown would probably be the starter.
I love that.
So, you know, but we'll see what happens in August.
And the other thing that you wonder about, at least, is when the lights are on, who's going to perform?
That's the key thing.
You know, you can do it in practice, but what's going to happen when the lights are on?
And it's so interesting with Hank Brown.
And I think we talked about it last week, that the narrative of Hank Brown would be so different if he completes that path.
It would.
It's so different.
Yeah.
he'd be the overwhelming favorite.
No doubt.
They beat Indiana.
They beat the defending champions.
I don't think there's any way after that that he loses the backup role to Hecklinsky,
regardless of how well that Hecklinsky played in practice and definitely changes the equation.
Need guys up front, though, in order for it to happen.
You feel good about Locke.
You feel good about Piper.
But do we know where Piper is going to play?
Now, this is reading between the lines a little bit.
Tim Lester is very much open to praise.
It felt like he was pumping the brakes a little bit about people.
inside. Did you take it that way? And are we sure that Piper is going to be the center?
Or could we see somebody else there and him going back to where he started at guard?
A little bit. He was pumping the brakes. I think Pete might be dinged up a little bit.
So I don't know if we'll see him tomorrow. So we'll see if that comes to pass or not.
But maybe that's what he was kind of speaking about was just like, hey, you probably won't
see him out there. And he just couldn't say that. But he's been kind of dinged up a little bit.
So Kill Winner is a guy that keeps getting mentioned, you know, walk on.
And, my Zelensky is still waiting to get his sixth year approved.
And he's been dinged up a little bit.
So the center thing, I think, is going to, that race is going to drag into August, is my guess.
And they'll figure that out as they go.
But I do think that if Keeper is the guy at center, Lucas Allgaier is going to be the right guard.
I feel pretty confident in that right now.
So it's just going to, but if Pee's not the center, Peeper is going to be the right guard.
So it's just, it's going to be however that, that shakes out.
It's probably, you know, three players to figure out for two spots.
And Dotsler's doing doing well at right tackle and a lot of praise for Layton Jones.
So that's good to hear that he's really kind of solidified himself at that left guard position.
Tom, obviously the defense.
of lines of question on a lot of
Hawkeye fans' minds. Do you guard
against getting too high or too
low after what is
gleaned, I guess, tomorrow?
Weather goes either way.
Yeah, and I
think it would probably be the latter.
It might not be...
You know, we might look at it and go, boy, this is a big
concern, and, you know, it's not like you
can go out and get anybody
this spring either. That's the other thing.
You've got your roster, and this
is what you got, unless they do the
unless we get we get anarchy taking over college football even more with the five for five thing and they grandfather those guys in and then you call up Aaron Graves and say come back you know you know but I don't know that you would be interested you know I don't know if he's ready to go on with his life he I mean he already graduated with one one degree maybe two degrees already and he graduated in like three years or some two years something like that um so he's um he's um
You know, it's just fantasy stuff right now, so you just really can't worry about it.
But I think they've got to find that's going to be Phil's biggest challenge.
And Kelvin Bell, their biggest challenge is getting that line up to snuff
because if they can't stop the run, it's going to be a long year for that defense.
And Phil Parker might have an aneurysm about four or five times on that sideline.
No doubt about it.
And, yeah, when they're struggling there, we've definitely seen him very animated Phil Parker.
even when they're good, we see an anime to Phil Parker.
Speaking of that, the linebacker spot,
we have just seen an embarrassment of riches at the position
throughout the last couple of decades now.
Cam Buffington, I mean, is this the dude?
We talked so much last year about Preston Reese,
and he was on the freaks list with Bruce Feldman,
so that definitely led to it.
But Cam Buffington, is he your starter at middle linebacker, too,
or he'll just be out there as one of the two starters?
Yeah, I kind of, the buzz about him is sort of like the buzz coming off
of like Josie Jules redshirt freshman year where everybody was like he's going to be the guy.
And he was the guy.
And he was the guy.
He was the guy immediately.
He just knew right away, okay, this kid's a different.
And he's going to be really good.
And I think that's the same thing with, you know, with Buffington.
And I think just given that there's struggles and the potential struggles on the interior of the line,
the detackle positions being kind of unsteady, you need that bigger.
that kind of Jack Campbell-like body that can be in the middle of that line to clean things up and make some tackles.
Where, you know, Jaden Montgomery did a terrific job last year, but he's just not big.
He's kind of sought off.
He's probably sub-six-foot and just not that big.
So I would really think that having him out there and maybe having Derek Wieskopf out there would benefit Iowa at linebacker,
just because both those guys are 6-3, you know, 2.30, 2.30.
240.
How many hawks get drafted tonight?
I think potentially two.
I do too.
I would think that I would think the dunk and then Lojo would be the two
would be the two guys that go.
I'm Trent.
Trent, are you hoping for Lojo with the second round, second pick?
He's got to be happy with his first round.
Yes, absolutely.
Oh my gosh.
We're so happy.
So happy for bears.
Yeah.
Yeah, which is rare.
There's been plenty of complaining throughout the years
these last couple of decades on the radio
so it's nice to actually have a smile when you come in
the next day after the draft.
Logan Jones absolutely
and I think it makes a ton of sense.
Left tackle though, boy, the bears
and what's happened out there.
That's just scary.
And we know Jennings Dunker is not that.
Do people in the NFL, Tom,
have you heard, do they believe?
Most people think he's a guard.
Can he play right tackle in a pitch, though?
Is he athletic enough to be a right tackle in the NFL?
I think he could.
could, but I do think you're probably right
that he's going to end up being a guard.
And anybody having a better, you know,
rise than Jennings Dunker?
He's like a legend now. I mean, everybody's
talking about him and
the flowing red hair.
I saw a video of him at like a B-dubs
or something with some social media
thing where he's getting, I mean, he's living
the life right now. He and Cooper de Gene.
Still living the life.
Yeah, no doubt about that.
to say certainly I've seen some pictures of Cooper DeGine
living the life in this off season and why wouldn't you right?
Hey Tom before we let you go and I don't want to run out of time or forget to do this
is the Chuck Klong auction still going on?
Yes, yeah, just kicked off.
We're going through May 2nd.
Oh, okay.
Thanks for putting that out there.
Yeah, you can check it out on our social media feeds.
They've got all the Give Butter link, but you can just search Chuck
long charity auction and they'll take you to the Children's Therapy Center.
There are so many cool things.
Caitlin Clark jerseys and Cooper to Jean signed a 16 by 20 photo that says it wasn't a
fair catch on that play.
I mean, they've got some great things, some, you know, historical things.
They've got a, the program from the Notre Dame Iowa game in 1939.
Oh, my.
That's the game that launched now to win a high season.
trophy and they've got a ticket for the game that was never played.
The Iowa, Notre Dame, 1963 November game that got canceled because JFK was assassinated.
There's somebody that's got a game ticket that's framed.
It's really cool.
That really is.
How much will that stuff go for?
I don't know.
What a collector is that rare as rare is could be.
Yeah, it's amazing.
They've got some great stuff.
Football helmets from the signed by a bunch of the guys from the 85.
team, including Larry Station, who never signs for anything.
And, you know, there's some awesome stuff.
Basketball from the men's and women's team this year for Iowa and all kinds of stuff.
So really cool.
Thanks for letting me mention it.
Sure, no.
We'll do it again next week with you.
And you find Tom on Twitter at Hawkeye Report and can find the links.
And, of course, all the information as well, hawkeye report.
dot last thing for me over to women's basketball another Georgia player making her way to
Iowa City for a visit didn't play a ton as a freshman but a top 100 player coming out and
Lassadabarrett continues to use those southern roots and she is bringing in some talent what's the
likelihood we hear of a commitment this weekend I think uh jocelyn face on is going to
properly commit that would be my guess um you know she that's that that point um lassander
Barrett is really paid dividend, hasn't she?
I mean, just, you know, bringing in, you know, chit-chat and then Carnegie has just been a really good run.
And they can get her.
I brought up the women's team in the context of that five-for-fives thing that might end up passing and being grandfathered in.
I mean, could you call it Taylor McCabe and get her to come back, perhaps?
That'd be nice.
Yeah, that'd be, I mean, Ham Stolke.
could come back. I don't know that both parties
would want that, but it's just, you know,
it's something that, something
to consider. But it's
you know, Taylor, with
the guard needs that they have right now,
I think would be a really
interesting piece to come back
if that could happen.
Tom Kaker at hawkeye report.com.

Logan Jones goes to the Chicago Bears at number 57.
As a Bears fan, I absolutely love it.
Interior help after Dalman.
What we saw a season ago, definitely I have been a long time proponent.
Just keep building those lines up front.
The Bears definitely doing that.
Plus Logan Jones by going 57 and it being in the former Heinz Field.
Yes, he's got a lifetime.
supply of ketchup. Did you catch that a lifetime supply of ketchup for Logan Jones? So if you're
needing a bottle, make sure to call up Lojo and get that one done. And finally, Jennings Dunker
making his way to Pittsburgh feels like a great fit. Obviously, Mike Tomlin has moved on,
but still going to Pittsburgh just year after year, such a solid organization. He's going to be
a good fit there. Is it going to be a guard? Could it be a right tackle? We'll see on that front.
But good to see it. Now we wait and see some of the other Hawkeyes when they're going to
hear their names called. A bunch of different guys that are out there. Obviously, we're going to wait,
Xavier Wampa, Carson Shire, Aaron Graves, Drew Stevens, Mark Grinowski, Wichin, those kind of guys,
maybe more on the free agent side for most of them. You got Bo Stevens. He's going to hear his name
called on Saturday. T.J. Hall, Maxwell, and those three, I think definitely are going to hear their
names called. But a lot of guys moving on. And that says we flip the page here and move way forward into the
2006 football season and you hear those names,
though there's going to be a lot of work to be done to replace those guys that have departed.
That'll do it for today.
