Well, we have heard more and more about Iowa basketball, an opportunity to see the team and
talk to some of the players yesterday for the Iowa beat. We'll talk a little bit about that and
some news and notes coming out, including Iowa basketball still looking for one more addition
to their basketball roster. We'll take a look at that. Scott Dockerman will join us from the athletic as he had a sit-down interview with the head man Kirk Farrant's his takeaways from his
conversation with Kirk. We begin today on the football front as Julian Manson has made his commitment to the Iowa Hawkeye program.
Now this comes as no surprise. Julian Manson, the son of a former Hawkeye player,
Jason Manson, long been speculated that this was going to be the case
Still though a four-star prospect from on three rankings
This is a guy that was also a four-star already ESPN a high three-star at 24-7 in rivals
This is a high-impact player and what I like most about Julian is
the versatility that comes along with him and ability for a young man
that has played a multitude of different positions. The size that he comes in with already six
for 220 pounds. You can see the physicality. And when you watch Julian Manson, even early
in his career, when he was playing as our underclassmen over at Iowa City West, you
saw a guy that just has an incredibly unique skill set. Now Iowa has him targeted as a linebacker and that's where they believe he is going
to start his career.
We've also talked a lot about him on that position at the linebacker spot and just how
much depth there is and young depth at the linebacker group that's going to be growing
here over the next couple of years.
But with the athlete like Julian Manson and the versatility that he plays with you know
I liked a lot of things that I saw in his film from the tight end position his ability to go up in space and make
Plays and may be able to build him into something like that
You wonder also with that frame at already 220 225 pounds
Now if he's gonna get too big for a linebacker, and that's a question that you have
Does this guy become more of a defensive end
Is that a position that makes sense for him?
versatility high level ability and what other takeaway after reading about the commitment from Manson is
What I was doing in this class
so this is from the on three rankings and their top 300 that they have of college of high school football players the class of
300 that they have of college of high school football players the class of
2026 I went out with the commitment of Manson as two top 100 players. That's good for Iowa I mean getting two top 100 guys is something that you're shooting for
But it's usually not the baseline as it pertains to recruiting but they got rare it and Manson both in the top 100
But speaking the top 300 Thomas Parliament Lyndon Nielsen six guys in the top 100 but speaking of the top 300, Thomas, Parliament, Lyndon, Nielsen, six
guys in the top 300, that's Iowa doing work. And you couple it with the
recruiting rankings right now. So Iowa moved up to number 31 in the rankings
with this commitment and I know a lot of people say 31, you know that's normally
the range. Realistically, Iowa football for high school recruiting, they're
usually that range to about 25 to 35 and there's been a few
outliers there. Go back over 20 years ago, there was a huge outlier when Iowa had a top 10 recruiting
class, but that is not normal for Iowa football. When they start to stretch outside of that 35
range, then you get a little bit concerned. They go above it, you're feeling pretty good. But what
other note in there? When you look through these these rankings You look at this Iowa team and just looking at the teams that are around them
You know the teams that precede them in the rankings
Arizona State of 30 Cal a 29 Rutgers at 20
Well, those teams respectively have 18 21 and 20 commitments what Iowa just has 12 commitments in the class now
There's also a narrative that you can poke a hole in that and say well
That's a problem because I was targeting a big number this season
They're looking in the high school ranks to maybe bring in a 20 to 23 guys
And that's been a number that's been thrown out and that is a problem when you're looking at this class
But hey, I was done great work again
We'll wait a couple of more decisions that come out out of the recruiting weekend
But really like out of Julian Manson what they have so I talked a little bit about this recruiting class in the way
That is shaping up and just some of the high-level talent that Iowa is bringing in starting with Jim Rier
Offensive line class and you know this offensive line class that has been just so good for
Iowa throughout the course of this season
I like to take a look at the offer list, you know
Who are the other guys that have been offered as you're going and getting in the race for them? And
it's not exactly fair for a couple of guys. We'll get into that momentarily, but rare
four star kid has athleticism plays lacrosse in high school and Iowa beats out Oklahoma
and Penn State and Auburn. I mean, when you're talking about that, you get excited about
a commitment Hudson parliament Parliament another part of that
Offensive line class coming in this year South Dakota kid, Nebraska, Minnesota
Iowa State Kansas K state Georgia Tech Texas Tech all involved for Hudson Parliament and I would gets the commitment there
you know when you look at Julian Manson his
Recruiting profile and his offer list with scholarships is not immense and certainly immense as it would be. Minnesota, Anza State, Miami, very
good, Arizona. But you wonder if his dad wasn't on the staff at Iowa, if he wasn't
a legacy recruit, I think you'd see a whole lot more offers there. And then he
finally get to maybe the crown jewel of this recruiting class out of the top-end talent and that's Carson Nielsen and
Nielsen from Waterloo had offers from Iowa State K state, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri
Those upper Midwest offers Wisconsin, but also had a Penn State offer also had a Tennessee offer
And if he wouldn't have committed over a year ago
What it would have looked like for him now the Ohio State's the Michigan's of the world
I think would have been involved
with Carson Nielsen.
This offensive line class is incredibly good.
Marcelo Vitti is another guy I really like.
We talked about case and Thomas who made
his commitment the other day from Sioux City,
healing what they have in this class.
They're still looking,
still going to be working and we're going
to see in this different era of recruiting.
What this going to look like going forward?
But great news as a legacy recruit, Julian Manson makes his commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes speaking of Iowa football the headband
Kirk Ferentz coming back for year number
27 Scott Dockerman from the athletic had an opportunity to talk with Kirk Ferentz
We talked a little bit with Doc about that interview what he learned his takeaways and some things you might not know about
Kirk Ferentz that's coming your way plus we got Iowa basketball talk
But stock talking with Scott document next on his interview with Kirk Ferentz and some ins and outs of college football
Are we setting up a battle with the SEC and Big Ten?
We'll get into that with Doc next as we continue on the locked on Hawkeyes podcast
into that with Docnext as we continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast.

Scott Dockerman coming up, he joins us now.
Great piece that published today,
an exclusive one-on-one sit down
with Iowa head football coach, Kirk Farrz, who will enter season number 27.
Hard to believe those two coaches been there as long as they were, obviously
Hayden Fry before him and Kirk Ferentz for the last 27 and Doc with us now to
talk about his piece.
Scott, well done.
Read it this morning when it was published and you're 1000% right of all the
quote, you know, older, longer in the tooth
coaches in college football, Ferran seemingly would be the one that was least
willing to change that that was perception, you know, earlier in his career.
But he's fully embracing what this NIL is doing.
In fact, we think back to, you know, his influence on the swarm, getting
jumpstarted under a previous athletic director who was really dragging his feet in Barta. But Kirk Ferentz got it at the time and continues to
get it now and he did adapt, did he not Scott Dockerman? Well done on your piece.
Scott Dockerman Well, thank you. And yes, I would say that
Kirk has certainly made everybody kind of their eyebrows, feral or whatever you want
to say, because what you kind of expected from him
and maybe in a whether it's perception or just kind of what we based it on from our interactions
in the past was that they wouldn't embrace the portal, that they'd be really resistant to change.
And in fact, it's kind of the other way around. He's been more invigorated by the changes. And
some of it has just been kind of through his own experiences,
but with losing players and the portal and what have you.
But some of it also is he is very much influenced by the NFL.
And yes, he was there in the 90s, so it
sounds like it was an eternity ago.
A lot of people it was.
But he also has a lot of people it was but but you know he also has you know a lot of
interactions with people in the NFL on a daily basis I mean his son is a coach
there as one of them still was a coach there and he has great relationships
probably better relationships with a lot of NFL coaches than anyone that's
college peers so so how you know he's kind of been astute in how NFL teams handle, uh, free agency and
how it works.
And he's kind of taken that mindset to, to this.
And you know, he had, uh, you know, one period I kind of documented it back in 2022, they
lost several players at a two day span and it kind of hit him.
It kind of shook him up.
And then he said, you know, I didn't write this part of it, but he, you know,
he went to practice and then he saw the rest of his players practicing hard. They were getting ready for a bowl game.
And then he's like, you know what? That's, that's, that's what this is all about. This is what I really enjoy. And if other players don't want to be here, that's fine.
We're, we'll find other players. And then he, you know, did it. And as long as they kind of fit what he wants, he's all for it.
than he did. And as long as they kind of fit what he wants, he's all for it.
He has evolved and he has changed and maybe it's slower than people want, but you're not going to last in this business 27 years without doing that.
Sitting down with him, and I know you've done this a number of times, what is he like? Ken and I had
him on the radio, interviewed him, Big Ten Media Days and like, but what is he like just you and
him sitting down and having a he like just you and him,
sitting down and having a conversation like that?
Because yeah, we can see the quotes
that you take out of there,
but what's the conversation like
with nearly 70 year old Kirk Farrant's now today?
I've always enjoyed my conversations with Kirk
away from everybody, whether it's a press conference
or even at things like media days.
Because he's kind of grown to coach speak like a lot of people are, but away from it,
you realize, first of all, how smart he is.
And I think he tries to be very self-deprecating and an osh when it comes to, I don't think
know how to do this or whatever.
But he's very much in tune with just about every topic. And, and it's, it's kind of fun to see, but then
he also has some really interesting thoughts and ideas on a lot of different things that,
um, really need to be brought out. I mean, remember, you know, this is the longest tenured
head coach currently in college football. And he's been part of the college game. He
started that even as a grad grad assistant 1980 at Pittsburgh,
which was really good to even then.
He's been here today. He's seen a lot of different things and he has ideas.
He really communicates it well in those one-on-ones and side conversations even more so.
I think it's impressive to be around him when he does kind of talk like this.
And the one thing about him that really comes through when you get a chance to talk to him
in those situations is he's very humble.
And he understands that he doesn't have all the answers.
He tries to have them, but he has principled standards.
And those are things that are non-negotiable with him.
But I think
that's probably why he's been relatively as successful as he has been for all these years.
No, obviously, doing talk radio stuff, you speculate, right? That's half of his job,
seemingly. And he just wonders when's it going to end. He's under contract through 2030.
Obviously, when you pointed out your last sense, I've got permission for my wife.
So I thought as far as when it's time to leave, do you think he's got another contract in him docking?
If he got to that point, would he go year to year?
And I'm not sure you can do that in college athletics.
Do you think he's got one more contract in him?
Yeah, and I would only be speculating this situation.
No, I don't think necessarily there's another
eight year contract or what have you there.
Although I wouldn't want to speak for Neil Cornrich
who could probably squeeze that.
Although certainly could have squeezed it out of Gary Bartlett.
Oh yeah.
I don't know about Beth Gatz, but I think at this point
what the smart play is for Iowa and for Kirk,
because he knows that it's not gonna go on forever.
You know, he feels good enough today at 70,
but he's like, I don't know what it feels like
to be 72, 73, 74, whatever.
And that's true because sometimes things just kind of
fall off a cliff when you get to an older age, you know, physically or mentally or what have you.
So, um, I think it's probably under that.
Just a continual extension, you know, one year, you know, you get the end of this year, go to another year, you know, and maybe not increase the buyout part of it or just maintain it, but just kind of perpetually just kind of take that one year at a time approach at the end.
A lot of schools do that with their coaches.
I think that would be the right route because I mean, whether he gets to the finishes, the
contract, I'm not sure, but you do want to provide that kind of stability for him in
recruiting.
You know, even though it's maybe not as imperative as it once was with the transfer portal and
players leaving really good players
leaving after a couple of years. I think you do want to have that proof that he's still our guy,
no matter what. Doc, you know the narrative out there. You're now a national writer and you work
with a bunch of national people there at the athletic. What would it take at this juncture
of his tenure for the narrative to flip a little bit that he's not what you
talked about at the beginning of the piece.
Is it the offense catching fire, passing game, catching up and this team makes a run and
goes nine and three, 10 and two slips into the play?
I mean, is that what it's going to take?
And even would that be enough to change the big perception that's out there about Kirk
Berenson and the Iowa football program?
I do think it'd probably be the offense. It would have to be explosive. It would have to be explosive more than just once. You know, it couldn't just, you know, like the Ohio State game in 17,
you know, you know, that's awesome for Iowa fans and stuff, but you're also the next week,
you can't have 66 yards of total offense either.
You're going to have to be at a pretty good clip for most of this season, for it to really
change.
I mean, it might mean winning a shootout against Indiana.
It might mean just simply getting a win against Penn State.
It might mean losing to Oregon, but not 48-14, but 41 to 34.
Just so you feel like when Iowa's offense is out there, and I think fans would agree
to this, when Iowa's offense is out there, they have a chance to score every time they
got the ball.
And if that can be the case and they look kind of exciting doing it, but still maintain
their standards and principles, then I think the perception would change quite a bit very
quickly.
And I think there'd be a new eye cast on Iowa, which is, you know, they're remarkably consistent.
I think very few teams are as consistent as Iowa.
And they've had some really nice peaks over the last 10 years.
You've had a 12-win season, you have what, three different 10-win seasons.
That's pretty strong accomplishments.
Never dipped below eight wins in any of those years. But I think you want to win a big one,
and I think you want to showcase your full potential, which on offense they really haven't
done really in a long, long time. Yeah, I'm glad that part made the
peace talk when he kind of reflected on the past. I think the quote was, I'm proud of what our, and prayer phrasing, I'm
proud of what our record is over the last 10 years.
And he should be, I mean, you stack it up.
There's not a lot of programs that can say that.
I know fans want to win the big 10 and they want to, you know, they, they,
they want to reach the pinnacle.
I get that.
But when you stack up what Iowa has done in college football under the Ference era and particularly these
last 10 years. I'm glad that he brought that up. And he does it, as he said, we don't advocate
a lot for ourselves, but the record is what it is and it's good.
Yeah, it is. And I think that's something he needs to be, you know, maybe they do need to, you
know, trumpet it a little bit more.
And, and of course, but, but again, part of that problem with, with Kirk is, or with the
Iowa's program has been the offense.
It was so dreadful that they became a punching line, punch line for a long time.
And, and you've got to get past that.
I mean, you know, in today's world and whether it's people I work with or whatever, if you're
bad on one side of the ball, you better be bad on defense because offense, if you're
bad there, you really stick out.
And I think anytime Iowa would beat its chest and say, hey, we've been this good, we've
been this good, it's like, oh yeah, but your offense has been so bad.
And you employed your son as the offensive coordinator
for so long, it would kind of take away any of that thunder.
And that's why I think this year is really kind of important
for Iowa from perception as much as anything.
Cause if Tim Lester, if Mark Granowski,
if this offense can average 34 points a game,
which last year was 27, it was a heck of a jump,
12 point jump.
But if you can get past 30 points a game, 34 points a game, and be very competitive and win a
couple of those games against 11 win programs, then I think you're looking at a renewed
view of him and his era. And I think it just looks good for him.
Over to are we getting to a battle with the SEC in the Big Ten three weeks ago?
All right, we're gonna have this model for four two two one one. We're gonna have that model
Well, maybe it's going to five eleven
Is this setting up with yet another alliance falling apart the alliance that we saw back with the Big Ten the Pac-12 and the?
ACC because boy it feels like maybe those the SEC and Big Ten factions aren't as close to the college football playoff and
What it's gonna look like then.
Maybe we thought just a few weeks back.
It's Trent. This is going to linger for a long time. This is,
this whole system isn't going to be figured out until next spring.
Let's just put it that way. I mean, you know,
we can talk about it as much as we want, but they're not going to finalize.
In fact, I, you know, I was told, I talked to several people, you know,
close to this and on the
Big Ten side and they were like, you know, we just preferred this to happen behind the
scenes as opposed out in public. And that's kind of their philosophy, which I don't consider
it smart. I think at some point you need to come out and swing it because you're five
and one in the postseason, it's the SEC, but everybody thinks it's the other way around because of the way the SEC is talking.
I do think that they're closer than it appears.
I just think that the SEC got a little bit of a ruborvado in it and it was in an environment
where it could kind of express itself.
What it comes down to is the Big Ten's not going to budge unless the SEC on its four
game or four team playoff, unless the SEC goes to nine, you know, regular season games.
That's just non-negotiable for the Big Ten.
And it's between those two.
Those two will dictate the future of that and everybody else has to get in line.
I mean, it's actually written into the contract.
So if they can't agree on anything,
it'll just maintain what it is now.
I don't see that happen.
I think there'll be 16 teams.
And I think they're closer, again, than what you may think.
And it actually would be to the Big 12's benefit
to get two teams in every year, guaranteed,
because it wouldn't have the last couple of years.
So I think that they'll eventually get back together and talk it out.
But this is just the talking season and it just it kind of takes that over everything.
But it does add a lot to perception and the Big Ten has a long way to go because and it deserves to be in a
better spot than what it's put itself.
Scott Dockerman for The Athletic Doc. Great piece on Kirk Ferentz. Well done as you normally do. Good stuff, Doc.

Couple of basketball notes from this week as once again Ben McCollum had media availability, couple of players out there.
Good to hear from Bennett Sturtz, couple other guys. We'll talk about that more throughout the week.
Couple of takeaways though from the Ben McCollum part of the press conference.
I think the first one that you definitely have to look at is there is a conversation
about Iowa perhaps bringing in another player that they're still open to looking for another
player to augment this roster and what that position means.
We've talked a lot about the center position.
This is not an overly big team with it.
We've gone hand in hand and you every day or snow my affinity for Trevin Yurok and what
he's going to be able to do for this team.
Not a big role
But in a small role initially and I think building upon that but continuing on that level
No, is there a big out there look at this point in the transfer portal that
Appears to be incredibly unlikely a guy that can also not just help you on the basketball floor
But is a fit for what you're looking for
That's gonna be difficult to find he did bring up another port though another
Component and that was potentially I will looking for guys that are reclassifying
If that is something that is in the works if that's something that maybe coach McCollum has a leg up on
Just something to keep an eye on on that front when you're talking about reclassifying
That would be a kid that would be going into his high school senior season, but makes the decision
that he's going to finish up high school early and then reclassify and come in
this year. Just one, two, maybe zero win in the back of your mind. But one of the
favorite parts of the press conference though, has him throw it a little bit of
shade at Iowa State and talking about it and probably just cyclone fans
trolling is what he was saying. He was talking about it and probably just cyclone fans trolling is what he was saying. It's uh, he was talking about the social media environment and talking about
you know how negative it can be but it's fun to have that you know a little quick like
Ben McCollum was not going after cyclone fans and and if they get butt hurt over that comment
I mean come on time to grow up but and that aside it's a rivalry I get that but adding a little bit
of juice back into it you, the Iowa Iowa State basketball rivalry
it's different than the football one I get that because
football loss can ruin your season a football loss as we saw a year ago just
Took that whole football team off the path on the last second field goal by the Cyclones and basketball
you can lose to your rival and still have a great season and
You go back to last year in Carver. It was one of the better environments of the year and still it wasn't even a sold-out building
Just the hope that Ben McCallum could get this program back to a level that we've seen and not just in terms of wins because
Framicaffrey won it win at the level we wanted to see the last two years, but I got one basketball games
But just getting back that connectivity
to Iowa basketball in this state and having a guy with the background that he has
the knowledge that he has at the Iowa basketball program and
What it's gonna take and then you couple with the guy that has just won. He's been an incredibly high winner
At all levels of basketball. It gets you excited and I certainly am about this team next season
We're gonna talk with John Bowen camp. He was at that media availability a little bit later on this week
We're gonna have that for you. Also
Going back to a week ago at a chance to talk with David Eichel who was at the open practice
We get some news and notes coming in from him lots going on here next week. I will be away
We do have a couple of special editions though, coming your way, including crossover editions. Spencer
LaGloughlin from our Lockdown Oregon site. He is going to join me. We'll go back and forth with Oregon and Iowa, what we expect to see in that
November matchup. Going to do the same with Jacob Goings from Lockdown Hoosiers as we'll start to preview our matchups coming up this fall. Get you a
little bit more knowledge of Oregon, Indiana. We'll continue through the teams
We'll do the same with Iowa State. We got a lot of the games Wisconsin, Michigan State whole lot more
We'll be doing that here as we do our
Crossover summer series and a couple of those coming your way next week here on the program
We're not going anywhere the rest of the week
We still got you covered a couple more episodes coming your way as we make our way through
June and looking forward to football season right around the corner
