Daily fantasy sports made easy. Not easy this afternoon for the Iowa
basketball team as they fall at the hands of Michigan. 90-80 the final in this one. A game
that was not as close as the final score indicated as the Hawkeyes in the second half of the game
get blown out. In fact, Iowa had a lead early in the second half, and then Michigan could not miss.
It was another one of those games defensively for Iowa, which is bad.
And, you know, going into this game, after what we saw last week from Iowa,
losing, getting blown out by Purdue, getting blown out against Iowa State,
Purdue is an excellent team.
It's a top five team in the country by any metric you look at.
It may be the best team in the country, and we'll see what March success looks like for the Boilermakers. But what we do know is this is
an excellent team and they're going to be very good again this season. Iowa State, I believe,
has a chance to be a very good team. The gauntlet they're going to go through in the Big 12 is going
to be incredibly difficult. And though it might not show in the win-loss record, That was a tough game. It's going to happen, right? This was hideous. Michigan's
terrible. This is a bad Michigan team. Not only is it a bad Michigan team, but it's a Michigan team
that is going through a ton of tumult right now inside their program. Michigan comes into this
one with their head coach having to be an assistant coach. Phil Martelli takes over in the role.
He was brought in to help Juwan Howard a little bit.
A guy that didn't have head coaching experience.
All right, let's bring in the veteran.
We've seen plenty of other college programs do this in the past, and they've gone that route.
Well, there was apparently some kind of altercation with Juwan Howard.
Remember, he is in a zero tolerance right now for after getting in a fight
with the Wisconsin assistant coach a couple of years back. So you got that hanging over him.
This is a team that was dead, just a dead team walking into Carver Hawkeye Arena. And what did
they do? They put 90 points on the board. They averaged 1.20 points per possession. They hit nine three-pointers, a team that hadn't shot very well.
Iowa starts off the game one of 15 shooting the three ball.
Here's the problem.
Michigan had been hideous defending the three-pointer coming into the game,
and obviously those metrics improved.
This is a Michigan team that had lost three consecutive.
Texas Tech, Oregon, not a very good Oregon team,
and Indiana, who's not very good themselves.
Not only that, they had lost earlier this season
to Long Beach State.
Look, the Sharks are not going to go through there.
Tarkanian doesn't coach.
Well, he's not with us anymore at Long Beach State
and Memphis.
They were four and five coming into this game.
And they looked better disciplined they looked
more competent and doing this with everything hanging over that program's head it's inexcusable
it's inexcusable to have this loss to this team and any faint hope that we had of Iowa being the
NCAA tournament team look I thought it was a long shot coming
into the season, and I think we were duped a little bit by what we saw early in the season,
especially in that game in Creighton. Even though it was a double-figure loss, it was still a game
that you're walking away with some hope. That hope is gone. This team looks clueless. So we get a
change in the starting lineup lineup something that I was certainly
hopeful to see that Owen Freeman's going to be out there in the starting lineup play him and
Kriki together I think that's something that needs to happen you have a true power forward
along with a true center all right you're good and Ben Kriki's not a good defender he's not even
an average defender he's a bad defender he's a guy that doesn't rebound at a high rate. You put Owen Freeman in there, a guy that can do both of those things at a good level,
along with his scoring ability that he has. Crick, he can float out a little bit more. He's got a
nice jumper from the outside. So you play a little high-low with those two post guys, and you're
good to go. You're good to go if you have an actual point guard on the floor. I don't get it. I don't
understand it. And we've talked about this in the past. Tony Perkins, yes, when Perkins in the past
played point guard, he's done it throughout his career. But when he's done it, he did it a lot
during the run in the Big Ten tournament a couple of years ago. It was him and Bohannon in the back
were together. And though he ran point a lot, and Bohannon would play off the ball,
he still had another ball handler, or he still had a more traditional point guard,
and a guy, obviously, in Jordan Bohannon that had played a ton of minutes.
You're able to get away with it.
The lineup that they tried out there, and I know,
it's a conversation that becomes a lot longer because of the last name.
And we get right back to what we dealt with
for the last seven years of nepotism
inside the football program
and a guy that was never qualified for the job
in Brian Ferentz getting a Big Ten offensive coordinator job,
and we dealt with that.
And now we're going through
and we're watching Patrick McCaffrey.
And yes, Patrick's been through a ton.
Going back to as a youth, getting cancer.
A guy that was a top 100 player coming in, and it hasn't hit.
It hasn't worked.
This guy has not developed into a top 100 player.
There are so many holes in his game.
The basketball IQ is lacking.
All these things.
And he just shouldn't be out there as a starter right now.
He shouldn't be having the third most minutes on this basketball team. He just shouldn't be out there as a starter right now he shouldn't be having the third most
minutes on this basketball team he just shouldn't he's not showing that ability and Patrick was fine
for what he is he hit a late three had a three early in the game hit a couple of buckets got to
the ramp that's what he can do but he doesn't help you anywhere else outside of making some buckets. He doesn't do anything else to aid the team.
And this team
is so behind the eight ball.
This team is so lacking.
Not having what they've had the last five years
of a superstar.
Rebluca Garza, Ina Keegan-Murray,
and even Chris Murray a year ago.
After going through that for the last
four or five years, you don't have that go-to guy.
You can get away with having Patrick McCaffrey out there.
You can't right now.
And certainly not doing it in a starting lineup
that doesn't have a point guard.
So you get Perkins, who is okay in that role,
but that's not his best.
His best, off the ball, be a defender,
pull up jumpers, that's where he's at his best. As a facilitator, it's not his best. His best, off the ball, be a defender, pull up jumpers. That's where he's at his best.
As a facilitator, it's not his game. You got Sanford at the two, defensive matchups that
he gets lost in. And then you got Patrick McCaffrey at the three. It's just, it's redundancy
out there having Sanford and McCaffrey play together. And it wouldn't be that big of a deal
if it wasn't the coach's kid.
But that's what we're going through right now.
This is what we continue to go through.
It's unlike anything I think that you're going to find in college basketball.
Now, this is not to blame all this on Patrick McCaffrey.
I still don't understand how we're at this point in the season,
how DeSante Bowen comes out, becomes a starter this year. That came as a surprise. Go back to the exhibition game. We talked about it after that
one, watching that. DeSante Bowen looked lost. It looked like, all right, this is going to be a
lost cause. Just a sophomore, but it wasn't going to happen. And what he's done is gone out there.
Five more assists tonight. Assisted turnover ratio at an elite level now. An assisted turnover ratio that is one of the tops in the country.
Assist rate, 112th in the country.
Turnover rate, low, 10.7%.
We're talking about a guy that is playing the point guard spot
like we hope to see at some point in the frame of Caffrey era.
I mean, you got to go way back when I always had this kind of point guard play
and a guy
that can beat people off the dribble, defensive intensity.
He has that.
I don't get it.
I don't understand what they're doing.
I don't understand the thought process behind it.
Look, this is what you need to do.
This is what Fran McCaffrey needs to do.
Needs to go out there, insert DeSante Bowen back in the starting lineup. Because you got to
see if this kid can be the guy. I think he's shown enough to think that there is hope that he can be
a full-time Big Ten point guard. Brock Harding's the point guard, and that's it. No more Josh Dix
playing point guard. No more Tony Perkins playing point guard. Enough of that. It doesn't work.
It's not going to work. Go with the guys that are actual point guards.
Brock Harding's the backup. DeSante Bowen's a starter. Let both of those guys get DeSante
Bowen 25 minutes a game and see what he can do. Because the numbers right now are bearing out
that he can play at a high level as a point guard. Let him do it. Let him play through mistakes.
Speaking of Frey McCaffrey, he was ejected from another game.
What do we take away from that?
And is this the beginning of the end of the Frey McCaffrey era?
We'll do that as we continue Locked On Hawkeyes.

Tricon and back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes
podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Your team every day. That's what we do here on the Lockdown Network. We got plenty of
football coming up for you this week. We'll be talking more about the transfer
portal.
What kind of numbers is Iowa working with here?
And of course, the search for an offensive coordinator.
Latest news and notes on that one today.
Very basketball heavy though. And we take a look at the big picture surrounding this program in Fran McCaffrey.
So Fran McCaffrey's ejected.
Him, like myself, and I'm sure many others didn't want to watch that garbage anymore
as they're getting blown out.
Dembale gets called for a call, a foul underneath.
He lowered his shoulder right into him.
It was a fine call, but it was a culmination of frustration.
Uh, Michigan hitting every shot, even when they finally got the hand in somebody's face
and he's still hitting it over top of frustration.
Brent was out of there.
He'd seen enough, maybe hoping that this could be something that could generate some kind of pushback. They got it back to, what, 14 a couple
of times before very late in the game. Eventually, excuse me, cut it to 10, but in the grand scheme
of things, it didn't do anything. This team is not good. This team doesn't have much hope.
And the question becomes about Fran McCaffrey and about his future with this Iowa
basketball program. Now let's start at the top. There is absolutely no scenario, likely scenario,
that Fran McCaffrey should be fired. Fran McCaffrey, we can argue about the March success.
We can argue about the only four wins in 14 years in the NCAA tournament. He has got the Iowa basketball program back to the level of Dr. Tom Davis.
Oh, but Trent, no, no, no.
They made sweet 16s under, look, they had a decade long stretch where they didn't make
sweet 16s.
And the reason that Tom Davis's contract was not renewed and he had that final lame
duck year is because of his lack of success in the
NCAA tournament the exact same thing we're talking about here and one game in Denver beating Arkansas
in a 4-5 game in the round of 32 it was a great game Dean Oliver with a beautiful behind the back
pass ahead to Jess Settles he flushed it away and Iowa pulled away to get the victory against the
Razorbacks had a great battle against Rip Hamilton and Khalid El-Amin in the Sweet 16 down in Phoenix.
And played about as well as anybody did against that UConn team that went on to win a national championship.
We're also talking about a quarter century ago, 25 years ago.
I was a freshman in college.
I'm now a man in my mid-40s with a couple of kids and a wife.
It's a long, long time ago.
So here we are. With a couple of kids and a wife, it's a long, long time ago.
So here we are, and we start with that part.
You're not going to fire Fran McCaffrey after what he has delivered.
Do we want more?
Absolutely.
The March success and the disappointments.
Round of 32 getting blown out by Oregon.
Bad matchup, doesn't matter. You're a two seed, you get beat by a seven seed like that.
That stunk.
That was the year.
And then you come back.
You have a great Big Ten tournament.
Keegan Murray looks like an All-American.
And he crapped the bet against a bad Richmond team.
And Keegan tweaks his ankle early in the game.
Nobody else steps up.
And you're bounced in the first round of the tournament.
That was the year.
Because with the win in that one,
they would have played a Providence team
that they were a whole lot better than.
Alas, it didn't happen.
Now that's tournament play.
That's going to happen.
But yes, he has not delivered March success.
I get that.
Still, he has qualified or would have qualified with 2020
for eight of the last 10 NCAA tournaments.
Dr. Tom didn't do that.
Lute Olsen didn't do that.
Now, Lute was not playing in the full-time 64-team era of college basketball,
but we also have to realize where Iowa basketball is
and take a look from facilities to not just Carver-Hawkeye Arena practice facilities, NIL budget,
recruiting base. You put all these things together, Iowa basketball is not a very good job.
Go back when Frank McCaffrey took the job 14 years ago, it was a surprise to a lot of people
in the community. There were many people in the basketball community, people on the national level
that I talked to, that looked at the job very poorly. They looked at it poorly, starting with the way that Dr. Tom was handled at
the end of his career. Steve Alford never being able to deliver what many people thought he was
going to be able to do. The disaster that was Todd Licklider. There were many people that looked at
the Iowa basketball job of one of the worst in the Big Ten. And now the Big Ten, as has expanded, look at programs around us.
You see Illinois and what Brad Underwood's done making them a consistent winner.
Well, they've invested in the program to make that happen.
And as much as I despise Steve Alford as a person and as a basketball coach, he had one
thing right.
I was a football school.
That is where Iowa invests.
And Iowa has not shown a willingness over the last quarter century to invest
in basketball, in men's basketball.
And because of that, they're behind.
At best, it's the 11th best job, 10th best job, maybe in the Big Ten.
Now you throw the additions of UCLA, obviously a blue blood,
USC, a rising program, Oregon that has as much money as God,
and Washington that's had some success.
You're left saying, well, this doesn't look very good for the future.
The likelihood that the next coach in Iowa City
is more successful than Fran McCaffrey
is not a very high one.
I don't believe that the next coach is going to make eight NCAA tournaments in 10 years.
I don't believe you're going to see that.
Could they have a run in March?
Sure.
But the consistent winner that Fran McCaffrey's put out there, the likelihood that the next
coach is going to do something similar,
it's just not very high.
Are you hopeful?
You can't be scared.
You can't be spooked because of what happened 25 years ago with Tom Davis and going for the next step and the next level.
And unfortunately for Iowa fans, the next level was down.
You can't be scared to make it.
But do not kid yourself.
Fran McCaffrey is not going to be fired.
Fran McCaffrey shouldn't be fired.
If this year is the disaster that it's likely going to be, that is not a fireable offense.
Not with the success year in, year out that he's had over the last decade.
However, there is more to this.
There is more as you see Fran.
Something we talked about last week.
Fran looks tired.
Fran looks out of it.
Fran's had a very trying year.
From Patrick a year ago, stepping away from basketball and taking a mental health break.
And what he's still going through.
To his youngest son, Jack, and the accident he was involved with this past summer.
Fran looks tired.
Fran very well could be done on his own accord.
He could be ready either for a fresh start,
do much like we saw Steve Alford,
take a job.
Fran's not going to get a great job.
Again, the resume is what it is.
A lot of years coaching, no sweet 16s.
Some success, but not big time success. A guy in his 60s. But could there be an opportunity for him
to go back where he grew up in Philly? Maybe. An opportunity to coach his son after we found out
that Jack McCaffrey said he's not going to be an Iowa Hawkeye. That still is a real possibility.
that Jack McCaffrey said he's not going to be an Iowa Hawkeye.
That still is a real possibility.
There is still a possible path for him to go out that way.
Patrick actually does, with the COVID year, have another year of eligibility.
And Patrick says right now that this is going to be his final go around,
but maybe one more shot.
Take a job.
I don't know.
Back in Philly.
Drexel comes open.
Or LaSalle, something like that.
And that can make a whole lot of sense.
Or maybe just says the heck with it.
I'm going to go out and I'm just going to watch my youngest son play.
And wherever that is, I'm going to go.
I'm going to follow him around.
And that's what it is.
That could be a real possibility.
We'll see.
Firing, not there.
Him walking away. I think it's something we have to look at. There was some good news on the hardwood over the weekend, and that was the Iowa
women's team as they get a victory against Wisconsin. Wisconsin, a program that the Iowa
women's team has dominated for a very long time. A little bit more difficult in this one. A sold-out
Kohl's Center for Women's Basketball,
something that hasn't happened in over two decades.
The women get a chance, and what do we need to see from this team
to get them back in the contention for a Big Ten title again this season
and make a run again come the NCAA tournament?
Little women's hoops here, and a note on football as we continue.

Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
The men, it was ugly.
The women did what they needed to, which is kind of a breath of fresh air, right?
To have something go down like that.
So they go out to Wisconsin.
They win it 87-65 over the Badgers.
A day where they shot the ball well, 50% from the floor.
And four of their last five as they kind of pulled away.
Kaitlyn Clark was, Kaitlyn, 11 of 19 from the floor,
four of eight from downtown,
hit both of her free throws in the game. She finishes also with nine rebounds and five assists in the game. Did have four turnovers in the victory for Iowa. Gabby Marshall hit a three
pointer, just one of three though from downtown. Saw some Sharon Goodman out there, a little bit
of everything in this game, but you know, Wisconsin's not very good. I think that's something that we also have to remember here. What I'm wondering is we see Sharon Goodman go out for
four. We're still waiting for Addison O'Grady to take a step forward. Hannah Stolke was outstanding.
Her ability to run the floor, you know, they're just doing so much and relying on her so much,
but I still maintain if I was going to get to that level,
if they're going to hit the elite level again,
you need some combination of Goodman and O'Grady
to take a step forward this year.
We need to see more out of those post players
because Stolke's excellent.
I think she's even better depending on matchup
against some other teams playing the four,
but she's super fast.
She's really good catching the basketball in traffic. She's good finishing around the 10. I mean, she has so many good qualities
there and you're still waiting, right? Kate Martin, two and nine. Didn't shoot it very well.
We're waiting for seeing more from either a Kylie Feerbach or maybe we'll get a little bit out of
Taylor McCabe. It was great to see McCabe.
She's such a great shooter.
It's two, three pointers in the game here this afternoon.
You know, she is one that I know there's going to be some issues on the defensive end,
not an elite level defender by any means, not even a plus defender.
But boy, if you can just find a way to get her out there,
a couple of stretches, four or five minutes in each half, something like that.
I think she's a player in McCabe that can really help this team go forward.
But a very workmanlike effort for the Hawkeye women.
They get the win there.
And now everybody off this week.
We'll see both the men's and women's teams back in action.
Coming up here in my home in Des Moines,
as they'll be at Wells Fargo Arena for the doubleheader.
The men take on Florida A&M, a game that, even with all these struggles, Iowa is a big favorite in that one.
The women take on Cleveland State, a Cleveland State team that won 30 games a year ago.
So a more difficult opponent for the women, but will be fun to see them out here, neutral court,
and see all the fans here in Central Iowa.
That'll get an opportunity to see Kaitlin Clark and company, and in the precursor of the men out there as well. Mention a little football and we're
still waiting some word on the offensive coordinator position as was reported last week by Chad
of the Des Moines Register. It does look like Tim Palasek, the Wyoming offensive coordinator and
the former offensive line coach at the University of
Iowa. He does not appear to be likely to get the Iowa offensive coordinator job. Same with John
Budmeier. We throw it out some names, talked about Matt Drinkle, who is at Army right now. Obviously,
he would not bring the triple option with him and do things like that, but he did run the power
spread at his last stop as he was the head coach in the NAIA at Kansas Wesleyan.
There's plenty of names out there.
Paul Chris continues to be bandied about.
There's going to be opportunity here.
The question still remains about this, though.
Whoever becomes the offensive coordinator.
Now, how much autonomy are they going to have?
How much leeway are they going to have?
Or how heavy of a hand is Kirk Ferentz going to have on this
offense? And that's what we're still waiting for and still finding out to know. Will we know
before we get to the bowl game or even when they descend down to Florida and make their way down
to Orlando for that game? I'm hopeful that that would be the case. Obviously, that's the most
prudent thing. You guys got guys in the transfer portal that you're recruiting. You got guys that
are making decisions. Are they going to come back? Luke Lachey, Eric Hall, guys like that.
Are they going to come back for another year of eligibility? They obviously would like to know
who the offensive coordinator is going to be if they're going to go that route. We'll be talking
a whole lot more portal coming up this week, breaking things down a little bit deeper on the
football front, and we'll do that. We also got a mailbag edition coming up this week of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
