You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome back, Hawkeye Nation, to a Tuesday morning episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade, and I'm very excited to be bringing you today's episode
because we are joined by 2021 Iowa football commit, Jeff Bowie.
He's going to be talking about his experience, kind of why he chose Iowa,
why he's been working on now, and why he's so excited about being an Iowa Hawkeye.
A lot of great information about an amazing young man, so really excited for you to get to hear that.
We also found out that Jordan Bohannon
is officially returning for his sixth year of eligibility
for the University of Iowa.
We're going to be talking about that on segment three.
Segment one and segment two are going to be entirely Jeff Bowie.
So you're going to really enjoy that.
Segment three, we'll get into the Jordan Bohannon talk
and why I actually think this is a really good move,
both for Jordan and for Fran McCaffrey,
especially when you find out what their plan is for playing him.
It's not the same thing they've had him do the last couple of years.
We're going to be talking about that on segment three.
That being said, though, let's hop into our conversation with Jeff.
Why are we wasting any more time?
Let's get into a conversation with the West Branch native, Jeff Bowie.
All right, y'all.
I'm honored to be joined here by one of the commits in the class of 2021.
We got Jeff Bowie on.
Is it Bowie?
I didn't even ask you that before we got on. All right guys jeff bowie on the call jeff how's how you
doing to me man i'm good i'm doing awesome dude you had you had prom this weekend too you're
you're messaging me back during you had your prom stuff going on i appreciate that how was prom for
you yeah it was pretty fun i went with my girlfriend so we had a good time awesome man uh
nice to have your last in your prom and
especially not sure if you're going to be able to probably have it with the whole pandemic stuff
going on so probably a nice surprise yeah because we didn't even get to have one last year so it was
really nice that we got to do this year and how how have things been for you during the pandemic
uh you know it's been pretty laid back for me my My gym stayed open. So I've been able to pretty much do everything I normally would.
And it was really weird with football and basketball season, but you know,
our coaches did a really good job and no one on our football team,
the whole season got COVID.
So we were really lucky that we never ended up having to quarantine during
that.
That's good, man. Yeah. And how did the football season go for you?
Good. We were district champs we won district champs and then we made it to the playoffs the round of eight so hell yeah yeah and are you excited to get to iowa now yeah i'm really excited
are you like are you watching are you going to the spring practice at all are you going on may
or may 1st yeah i went to the last one and I'll go to the next one too since, I mean,
I live probably 10 minutes away, so it's fun.
And I'm assuming you grew up an Iowa fan, right?
Yeah, I grew up an Iowa fan.
I've always been an Iowa fan.
My whole family has been Iowa fans, really.
Was there any hope of actually going anywhere else?
I know I read some interviews, and it sounds like you tried giving everyone a fair shot,
but like if we're being completely honest, was there ever really any chance you went
anywhere else besides Iowa?
You know, I mean, there wasn't, it never really seemed to me like I was going to go anywhere
else just because I went everywhere and it was like, no one really could top Iowa.
So it kind of just reassured like where I already knew I really wanted to go.
That's awesome, man.
And you're up to 268 pounds right now, right?
I saw that on your Twitter.
Yeah.
That's awesome, man.
What is your ideal target weight?
What does Iowa want you to get at?
You know, Coach Bell says just as big as I can get.
So I'm just doing what I can.
And the weight's been coming on really easy on
the strength program, it's been really nice to have a really good program to work on. So
I'm just grateful for that. Are they helping you with that program? Are they giving you some stuff
to do or how do you, how are you getting that program? Yeah, they send you out a program. It's
just a booklet of all the workouts you do and stuff. So you just follow that. And
it's like a nine week program. So it's been nice. That's awesome, man. And right now you are
technically listed as a defensive end, but I have to ask, I mean, you're six foot five,
you have to 268 pounds, you know, you're, you're still a teenager. What are the chances you might
be maybe move inside? And is that something you'd be open to you know I'm willing to go anywhere where I
can see the field really so I don't really mind if I move in or not but uh I mean even my defense
for my school we moved to a 3-4 so I was I was on the outside but I was really more of a defensive
tackle for the last couple years so I do have some experience with that and I know that if I get big enough Kelvin
he's told me that he'll move me in and I mean I don't mind it so I'm just doing whatever he wants
really I love man and what so you obviously have a pretty good relationship with Kelvin it sounds
like and he was your lead recruiter what does he want you to work on before you get to school
outside of just putting on weight and keep getting bigger? You know, I think the main thing is just working on keeping my speed up while I get this big,
because if I do say a defensive end, obviously, I don't want to just get big and slow.
So that's one of my main goals.
But I mean, other than that, it's really just I'm waiting to get there.
And I'm really excited to see you know I've done some
drills with him at camps and things and I know he's a great coach so I'm definitely excited to
get to do more fundamental things with him absolutely you mentioned wanting to keep the
speed on right you were clocked let me see I'm looking at a May 2nd 2019 at 486 40 yard dash
do you think you could still run that now or can you run a little bit faster
hopefully faster I don't know I haven't with the pandemic there weren't a lot of camps or anything
to do that kind of stuff so it's kind of all just been working on your own and i know the
iowa program does have some conditioning stuff on it so i'm hoping that'll get the speed up and
really i mean if i can run faster than a 4'8", that would be ideal, especially at my size.
It'd be darn impressive, man.
I saw the 4'8", 6", I'm like, holy crap.
That's moving and grooving, man.
And you originally, so two years ago, I believe as a junior,
you played with a partially torn labrum, correct?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I got surgery on that last February.
How do you feel now? Are everything good to go? You're fully healthy?
Oh, yeah. It's it's so much better now because I think I I'd had shoulder problems when I was younger, too, like because I used to be a running back and I'd had like a separated shoulder.
And I think maybe just it took a big trauma my junior year to really make me notice like that something was wrong so
since I had the surgery I mean everything's been going so much easier like in the weight room like
what places where things used to be a difficult like when I'd work shoulders or chest like
if it would be hard now it's just it's so much easier and it feels so much better
that's good to hear man yeah I feel like sometimes you don't realize how bad something is until you
realize how it feels good like oh. I've been doing this for a
long time like that. Yeah. Well, it got to the point cause I went, I actually played all, I
played seven football games with it. And then I was like, and then it started to feel a little
better. So I was like, Oh yeah, it's probably just nothing. I probably just tweaked it, even
though it was like, like really like dislocating and stuff. And I was like, oh, yeah, it's probably just nothing. I probably just tweaked it, even though it was like, like, really like dislocating and stuff.
And I was like, wow.
But I went to play a basketball game and it got knocked on a layup.
And I was like, yeah, it's not going to work because I went to pick up like a glass of water that night.
And like, I couldn't even like I had no power left in my shoulder.
So I was like, OK, I should probably get it.
And yeah, so good Good for you, man.
Some high pain tolerance.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Good and bad thing.
Yeah.
I mean, I bet the Iowa coaches are happy, but, I mean, that's definitely –
that's tough, man.
You mentioned the fact that weightlifting was kind of difficult
when you had that.
I do want to talk a little bit about weightlifting
because it sounds like you're a pretty competitive weightlifter.
Yeah.
You have some pretty impressive scores already, I could add,
just from your 2019 camps.
But what are your maxes right now, the bench, squat, and power clean?
Are you coming for some records on that Iowa football board?
I'm going to quickly pause the conversation with Jeff.
I hope you are enjoying it as much as I did.

at now let's turn our attention back to our conversation with Jeff right now.
You know, I'd like to,
I think I might be able to push for the squat record sometime while I'm there.
I'm squatting 500 right now and I haven't matched a deadlift in a long time,
but my power clean is over three 15 and my bench is right around three 15 too.
And that's, I mean, that's, I couldn't bench for almost a full year too.
So, I mean, that has been going up so much so fast lately.
It's been awesome.
So that's amazing.
And you, so you haven't had a, had a chance to bench that much.
If we're looking ahead four or five years, right.
You're at the NFL combine.
You got to bench 225 pounds.
How many times are you getting it up right now?
Right now I've done it 15 times.
So that's, yeah.
I mean.
Your score is a beat.
Current players trying to enter the NFL draft.
That's impressive.
Yeah.
I mean, that's always been my goal.
I mean, I used to competitive power lift when I was younger.
I have a lot of 12 13 year old
records for AAU and stuff like that and you know it's always just been fun it's always just been
for football but it's always been something I've been really good at so I've always taken it a lot
more serious than a lot of other kids absolutely I mean clearly it seems like it man the numbers
speak for themselves uh speaking a little bit about Iowa, so obviously you went to other schools
to check them out and just nothing compared to Iowa.
You grew up an Iowa fan, but outside of that, why Iowa?
Why the Iowa Hawkeyes for you?
You know, once I got to meet all the coaches and stuff, you know,
that stuff you can't really see from the outside.
It's like those bonds you can make and everything.
It was like I just really mixed in really well with the coaches,
and I love the environment
there.
And obviously when you go get to go see a game, like everyone knows it's, there's nothing
really like a game at a Kinnick.
So it's just awesome that it's going to be, you know, a part of my life and I'm just really
grateful for it.
Yeah, man.
That's, that's exciting stuff.
I'm happy for you.
Obviously excited to see you play there.
As far as receiving that offer though, what was that like what was that um experience like
what were your emotions that kind of went through when you finally got that Iowa offer
yeah well I got a lot of other offers I think Iowa was really the last school to offer me
and it was I'd been recruited my freshman year by Reese Morgan before he left. And then when Kelvin came in, you know,
he really wanted to reevaluate all the recruits for himself, you know,
which I was totally fine with.
And everyone else started to offer.
And I was like, wow.
So like, when's I going to offer like, you know,
and because they were one of the first schools to even recruit me or
anything.
And I was wondering if they were going to even offer me.
And then after one of their summer camps, I went against a bunch of,
I went against like Connor Colby and some of the other guys they were looking
at. And I did really,
really good in that camp and basically earned my scholarship because right
afterwards they're like, Hey, can you come meet with Kirk? And I'm like, yeah.
So it felt really good to not really just be a lot of the schools,
you know, they call you and they offer whatever. And it's like, not a very personal experience,
but for them to really evaluate me first and then be like, okay, yeah, we really want to,
you know, have you here and then show it to me was really fun.
That's amazing, man. What was that excitement like when you told your parents?
I bet they were just ecstatic.
You know, they were there too. And my stepdad, he had to leave early from the camp for work.
He had to go to work.
And then they called him and they're like, hey, you better get back here like right now.
And he was like, for what?
And they're like, well, they want us to come meet with Kirk.
And so he came back from work and they were all super excited because
especially my stepdad, he's super diehard Iowa fan.
He went to Iowa and I mean, everyone's a big Iowa fan, but especially him.
So he was really pumped.
That's amazing.
I love that.
I love the fact that he went to work and they had to come back.
He's like, no, no, I'm not missing this opportunity.
You get a scholarship offer.
Yeah.
I mean, since we've been little, I mean, I don't know if you can see that but we've got oh yeah hawkeye like that that's awesome and he got the we got
this golf cart too and it's like he just dude it's decked out he's ready to go man yeah he's diehard
and that's yeah that's before i even was getting recruited we got that stuff and he's so now he's
just like he's through the roof
that's amazing man so what what are you most excited about for playing with the Iowa Hawkeyes
just the chance to develop I think it's you know it's basically an NFL factory and that's been my
goal since I was a little kid you know my mom would ask me you know what do you want to do
when you grow up and it just like I'm I'm never going to tell her a job.
Like it's always just been the NFL.
So that's one of my biggest things, but obviously, you know,
there's college first and I'm really excited to get to work with those
coaches because I think Kelvin and especially like Kirk Ferentz,
like meeting those guys, just great people.
And I'm excited to get to spend, you know, more time around the program.
Definitely, man. So you mentioned the fact that the goal is the NFL and I agree that that definitely has to
be the goal um backup option what are you studying at Iowa uh I'm studying sport and recreation
management so like to become an athletic director or coach someday you know my other goals like I'd
like to own a gym someday. Cause that's one of my
big passions. And it's like, you know, just a lot of things like that where I don't want to get too
far away from athletics or anything because that's really my passion. But, and it'll also help me,
you know, keep a focus on that too. Definitely. I'd want to be able to combine your passions
with things that you can do that and be able to make some money off it. That's the best way to do
it. I love it, dude. All all right i got two questions left for you um
what is your favorite thing to do outside of football uh well i really like to lift and i
really like to play basketball i mean a lot of people they think of lifting as like i gotta go
to the gym and it's like i don't know i really like it i've always had fun and it's like because
when i'm at the gym you know no one's trying to call me.
No one's trying to do all this stuff.
And it's like just a great time to really be in there.
And, you know, you know you're improving while you're in there.
And I've never really shied away from that.
And then basketball, I just like playing pickup basketball with my friends.
I've been doing that since I was a little kid.
I mean, basketball used to be my favorite sport because I used to be really little.
And then I hit a really big growth spurt.
I grew like a foot and like 80 pounds in a year.
And then football is my favorite sport.
I'm still waiting on my growth spurt, man.
I'm hoping someday it comes.
I think it's gone though.
I think I went from 5'3 or five, four to like six, two.
And I was like one 30 to like one 80 in one year or something like that.
So it was, it was crazy.
That's amazing.
Yeah.
That definitely helps you like football a lot more because it just gets a lot
easier for you.
Absolutely, man.
So there is a, you know,
some football players that have a pretty good basketball
background you uh you excited to hoop it up with them take on some of the tight ends yeah and uh
i know i'm gonna be rooming with uh cooper dejean and he's a big basketball guy so it'll be fun uh
like i always make fun of him like if he tried to dunk it on me i'd block him because
you know i just make fun of him like that but But yeah, I mean, it should be fun.
I would love to see that matchup. You got the quickness and Cooper,
and then you got, you're just sized there. I mean, he'd be a little bit,
it'd be a fun game to watch. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you have a tattoo, right?
It's a, it says loyalty on your arm, right? Um, I love it, man.
So you wanted to, I saw, I saw Leah Vance article. Leah's awesome.
We had her on the show a couple months ago and she does phenomenal job with the gazette but you mentioned you wanted to get a
full sleeve and i feel like this is the right way to just end the conversation on a kind of a
loose note what are you wanting to get on your arm like what are you going to use to fill all
that space up man well i'd like to get some sort of tribute to my grandparents especially my grandpa
because he was one of the biggest iowa fans I know and like I know before he died my freshman year it was when I started getting recruited by Iowa I mean it was
he was so happy and everything and for them to both pass away from you know cancer in the same
you know basically about a year span it was crazy and you know it was a big shock for me and something to deal with but
you know I know he's still watching and all that so it's just you know it's great to be able to
know that how proud he'd be right now that I'm actually going to go to Iowa and be a Hawkeye
because there is no bigger fan than him that's awesome man doing it for the family I love it
yeah well so I gotta I mean what what are the emotions gonna be like for
you I wasn't gonna just what are the emotions gonna be like for you that first time you step
out on the field at Kinney because I mean I've talked to a lot of recruits and you know everyone's
super excited to go to Iowa right but yeah not a lot of recruits I've met that how I feel like
as much of a familial connection just from a fandom perspective what is it gonna be like for
you stepping on that field that first time you know it'll be a big rush for sure I mean it's going to be an amazing feeling I don't think
there's going to be anything like it because you know so much work and everything like thousands
hours in the weight room and everything finally you know paying off in that moment it's all going
to feel it's going to feel amazing and you know I've just something I've been looking forward to
for a really long time I love man well Jeff any last words you want to say for the hawkeye fans listening
to this go hawks i love you thank you so much buddy we're looking forward to seeing you on the
field and have a good day man no problem you too man all right and that does do it for our
conversation with jeff i hope you enjoyed that conversation again as much as i did um he's going
to be a phenomenal addition to the university of iowa football team I'm excited to see him play in the black and yellow.
Going to be a lot of fun to follow his career at Iowa.

And we're going to be doing our own little coverage here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. We got a very special guest who's recorded with us last night, and I should be dropping
this episode on Thursday, kind of figuring out a few things so we have some amazing guests
as well.
But we're going to be dropping that episode either tomorrow or Thursday, kind of giving
you a preview of the NFL Draft.
And I'll also be covering the draft as our Iowa
Hawkeyes get selected I don't expect any action Thursday night for us I do expect potentially
some action Friday and then Saturday is going to be a whirlwind of fun as we see many Iowa Hawkeyes
see their dreams come true so that's gonna be a lot of fun but with that being said let's get
into the conversation we want to talk about Jordan Bohannon who's going to be joining the Iowa
Hawkeyes next year.
First and foremost, I must say, I'm actually kind of surprised.
I didn't expect him to join, especially after what he kind of said last year.
He said he was not returning.
This was his final season.
But I think the way things ended, and he actually went in and divulged some of that information
when he talked to Chad Leistico for Hawk Central.
But he talked a little bit about why he decided to return.
I would also like to, you know, just point out the fact that he struggled down the end
of that stretch, right?
He struggled in that final NCAA tournament game.
He also was dealing with some injuries as well.
So my guess is he's hoping that he can play a full season healthy.
And I think the biggest thing, when you look at kind of the reasons for coming back, he
said he really wanted to play in front of fans.
You kind of got the sense that he wanted a real senior night, with his family being able to hug them, that kind of stuff.
And he said his older brothers all told him that if they had the opportunity to, they would go back and experience one more year of college basketball again.
Then on top of that, Fran was recruiting him pretty hard once CJ decided to transfer to come back.
And really what Fran said was, you're going to be playing the two. And I think that's a perfect spot for Jordan Bohannon.
No longer does he have the ball handling duties. He can be more of a come off screen, a pick and
shoot kind of, or pop and shoot kind of guy. There's going to be more open looks for Jordan
Bohannon if he's not the one that has to create his shot. I don't think for the Iowa basketball
team to progress the way they need to, they need
a guy like Joe Toussaint or Aaron Uless there to be able to handle the point and then have a Jordan
Bohannon be able to shoot and play kind of that CJ Frederick role. Now I know some people are a
little bit concerned about the defensive side of that, you know, with Jordan Bohannon, but this
team is very strong defensively when you look at that potential starting lineup. I truly believe it's going to be Joe T, Jordan Bohannon. If I had my money on it, I would rather play Patrick McCaffrey at the three,
Keegan Murray at the four, and Philippe Rabracha, I learned how to say his name today,
at the five. That would be my starting lineup, and I believe that starting lineup should be a
top 25 quality team. When you have Aaron coming off the bench, Tony Perkins coming off the bench,
Connor McCaffrey, I know some of you don't like Connor, but I think Connor does a great job
of facilitating as well and has a great basketball IQ. You have Chris Murray and then
Joshua Gundelay. That's a pretty solid second unit there. So to me personally, I think this
is the top 25 team with Jordan Bohannon back. Iowa needed to get a shooter. They needed to get
a shooter in the portal when they realized CJ was going to transfer. And the fact that they get
Jordan Bohannon, I think as Iowa fans, we should be incredibly excited about that. Anyone who's
upset doesn't realize how much Jordan Bohannon truly means to this program and how much he's
really put in to be a part of this program. I don't think it's easy to look at how bad he is
defensively at times or how he's not the most athletic point guard around and get upset. But then you don't,
you're not thinking about those times where he's the guy who's going to take that, that big time
three, the guy who's going to put the team on his back and score 12 unanswered points. That's what
Jordan Bohannon brings to the team. And having that at the two is going to be immensely beneficial
for this Iowa Hawkeye defense. And I do believe defensively they are going to be a better team,
even with Bohannon in that lineup and that starting unit,
and being healthy as well.
So again, the big pitch was the fact that he can play the two.
The ball handling duties are not going to be with him nearly as much.
That doesn't mean he's not going to be handling the ball,
but I believe having him at the two is going to give him more open looks
than what he's had in the past,
give him more opportunities to shoot the ball the way he likes to and get some open look threes.
So that's going to be a lot of fun.
And this is a big-time addition for the Hawks.
Now, where they go from here is going to be interesting.
We talked a little bit about this yesterday, but Jordan Bohannon is back.
What happens with Joe Wieskamp?
I can't imagine Joe returns, but if he does, there's only one scholarship left.
So they kind of got to wait until Joe returns to decide what they want to do with the remaining
scholarships. I think Fran probably at this point feels pretty comfortable with the team he has,
though. He's got to feel pretty comfortable with the group that he's going to be bringing back
with Jordan Bohannon as a part of that lineup. I would be. I mean, I'd be pretty darn comfortable
if that was my returning lineup. I have a prolific three-point shooter like Jordan
Bohannon you got guys who can run the floor Joe T Patrick McCaffrey Keegan Murray and you in that
lineup you still have three guys who can shoot the three pretty darn well between Keegan Jordan
and Philippe I mean those are those are three guys who can hit the three consistently I think
Patrick McCaffrey can probably shoot a little bit better as well and we we're going to see some better shooting from that second unit as well.
Chris Murray is a guy to definitely watch out for as a big-time shooter.
Connor McCaffrey, as much as people want to give him crap because of his shooting motion,
he has improved his three-point percentage every single year
and became a more consistent three-point shooter this past season.
So there are some shooters on this team.
And with Jordan Bohannon back, I truly do believe this Iowa Hawkeye basketball squad
can be a top 25 throughout the season.
So whereas we were kind of looking at the last three weeks thinking, oh my gosh, this
team is getting decimated, right?
You lose Luka Garza.
You lose a Jack Nunji.
You lose a CJ Frederick.
You lose a Jordan Bohannon and a Joey's camp.
Those are big time losses.
But now Jordan Bohannon's returning. There camp that those are big time losses, but now Jordan Bohannon is returning there.
Theoretically is a chance that Joe does return.
You get a guy like Philippe,
who is a big time player.
He's going to be a big time producer for the Hawks.
And we're actually hopefully going to have him on the show as well.
So stay tuned for that.
But this Iowa Hawkeye squad is shaping up quite nicely.
And again,
Fran McCaffrey showing that he's able to adapt.
He's able to build a team despite these unusual circumstances. And I think with Jordan moving to the two,
it's going to give some of these young point guards a really good opportunity to showcase
what they can do and to show how dynamic they can be in this Fran McCaffrey offense. And they're
going to be able to run quite a bit. And it's going to be a lot of fun to watch that team play.
That does do it though for our show today. If you liked the show, please make sure to give us that
