Starting point is 00:01:07 Biz, good to see you again. Won't be seeing you this weekend, unfortunately, as I was back home at Kinnick Stadium. Night game, always a fun environment, regardless of how frustrated we are. But we're here to talk a little bit about the past. And it is Penn State. What a frustrating performance on Saturday night yeah it's probably I don't know how you do the uh instant uh reaction podcast Trent you know fortunately you don't talk to me until Tuesday usually and by then my perspective has
Starting point is 00:01:37 always changed if you'd have talked to me Saturday night or Sunday morning uh there probably would have been a lot more anger and a lot more swearing. But, you know, with 48 hours of perspective, you always realize this is just what Iowa football is, Trent. They're always, you know, enough to get your hopes up and then occasionally put up performances like Saturday where you just – all you can ask is, what the hell was that? I mean, that was embarrassing. I mean, you know, there's not much I can say that everybody else, I mean,
Starting point is 00:02:10 no matter what angle you take, you're right. I mean, there's, you can say the offense is terrible. It was, you can say the defense wasn't as good as it usually is. You're right. You can say that Brian Ferentz needs to go. You're right. You can say that our offensive line's terrible. You're right. You can say we got no wide go. You're right. You can say that our offensive line is terrible. You're right. You can say we've got no wide receivers. You're right. You can say McNamara's clearly regressed or not done well the last two weeks.
Starting point is 00:02:33 You're right. I mean, there's no arguing any of these points. It's just not good, not a good performance, and just frustrating on so many levels just because how many times can the coaching staff say, you know, we're going to fix these issues and, you know, it's like the Charlie Brown. How many times can you run up and kick the football and they just pull it away from you and then you're left laying on the ground
Starting point is 00:02:59 and like, well, you know, fool me once, you know, fool me once, shame on you. What was this? I don't even know what to say because I'm so frustrated. I just remember the George W. Bush, we'll never be fooled again. Yeah, exactly. Well, we get fooled frequently as Iowa fans, Trent. We buy into it, and then this happens. So, you know, to me, the biggest frustration is with Iowa football,
Starting point is 00:03:21 up until the last couple years, you always count on us being competitive. And that's just not the case right now. The last two years, you know, since we were, ironically, since the last Penn State game, we were up 6-0 and ranked, what, second or third in the nation. We've gotten our butts kicked five times now. You know, Purdue by 17, Wisconsin by 20, Michigan by 39, Michigan by 13 last year,
Starting point is 00:03:49 which was 20 until literally two seconds to go, Ohio State by 44, and then last night – or Saturday night. So six times in two years we've gotten just manhandled by teams. And that's – I don't know. I just – for the longest time that didn't happen with Iowa football. It used to be the anomaly. Now it's become kind of the – it's become way, way too regular over the last couple of years. So I stumbled in this theory and I want to get your perspective because it's a guy I'm sure we probably argued about plenty of times in the past, but a lot of people are pointing towards Doyle
Starting point is 00:04:16 and him leaving. And maybe that has led to the downturn in the offensive line. I struggle to believe that as good as the defensive line has been. Every other position group, we haven't seen any kind of physical step back. But people made that argument. I went a different direction, though. And two years ago, another guy left the staff, and that's Ken O'Keefe. Brian's teams early in his tenure offensively, though they weren't great, they at least were okay. You know, it felt like they were scheming, they were doing things.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And these last two years, and you can blame the offensive line woes for it, but not having a real quarterback coach, not having a guy that has any clue about anything mechanically that can be done, not having a clue about how to actually coordinate an offense. I believe, or at least it's a theory,
Starting point is 00:05:00 that the loss of Ken O'Keefe is more significant than we probably initially realized. A guy that definitely did help with the game planning and the scheming. You look at his offenses, they're immensely better than anything Brian's tried out the last seven years when he was the offensive coordinator. Am I onto something here? Can he go down that road with me? Boy, that's a unique theory, Trey. Who would have thought that we'd get to the point where our offense was so bad
Starting point is 00:05:24 that we were begging for the days of Ken O'Keefe. I don't know. Part of the thing is, I mean, you look back, Ken O'Keefe, Greg Davis, Brian Ferentz, I mean, the nature of the job is you're going to get criticized. You're going to get criticized heavily. But I don't know. I don't buy either theory, to be honest. I don't think Doyle being gone is the reason we're not very good right now.
Starting point is 00:05:48 And I don't think that O'Keefe being gone is the reason. I mean, could they play a small role? Sure. But I don't know. To me, it's just simple. We don't have much offensive talent. There's just not much there. I mean, there's the most talented guy on our offense is Luke Lachey,
Starting point is 00:06:04 and he's out right now. And then we also, on top of not having much talent, we're not executing pretty well. I mean, Iowa football offensive line, when they are good, they are a well-oiled machine. And right now, I mean, they've got talent on that offensive line. They've got some – they can't use that they're too small. They've got some big guys.'t use that they're too small. They've got some big guys.
Starting point is 00:06:26 They just don't execute very well. And so, you know, when you don't have a ton of talent, you better execute. And if you can't – if your talent's limited and you don't execute, that's a recipe for what we saw on Saturday night. I mean, you're going to get whooped by teams that are – you know, we're not as talented as Penn State. Everybody knows that. So you better not execute them.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And we sure as heck didn't do that. I mean, their execution, give them credit. I mean, they followed the game plan that Michigan used last year. I think we even talked about it last week. I said, if you do what Michigan did last year, don't make mistakes, and you just stay patient and take what I was going to give you, we're in trouble. And that's exactly what Penn State did.
Starting point is 00:07:00 I don't – you know, everybody's talking about Drew Haller. I wasn't impressed with Drew Haller at all. I don't think they gave – I don't think they had any confidence about Drew Haller. I wasn't impressed with Drew Haller at all. I don't think they gave, I don't think they had any confidence in Drew Haller. I'm not saying he's a bad quarterback, but on Saturday, they clearly didn't trust him to do much. But he, to his credit,
Starting point is 00:07:15 he executed the game plan absolutely perfect. But they didn't, I mean, how many times did they throw the ball farther than eight yards downfield? And we didn't do anything to stop that, right? And the other thing, I mean, everything went wrong the first half. I mean, you can complain about every break went their way the first half, and we're still 10-0 game.
Starting point is 00:07:34 And honestly, first quarter, we're up 59-1 in yards at one point. I mean, we actually executed really well offensively. And then, unfortunately, once you run out of the play sheet, you have to actually – once your scripted plays are done, you might as well just burn our team to the ground. After that first quarter, go look at the third quarter. Have you seen the stats for the third quarter, Trent? Well, the second and third combined are ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:07:59 What was it? 15 plays for negative 10 yards. I can't remember what it was. Well, the third quarter, I went just looking at the third because the third quarter shows that the defense clearly deserves some of the blame here also. I mean, as much as the offense, absolutely not. But third quarter, you come out of the break.
Starting point is 00:08:18 There's no excuse. I mean, I get it. By the fourth quarter, we were gassed. But third quarter, you're not tired. Half times in college football take forever. And they come out, and third quarter, there's only four drives in the whole quarter, two for each team. Their two drives were 29 plays, 151 yards, 27 out of the 29 plays were positive yards.
Starting point is 00:08:40 There was two incompletions. Other than that, they just methodically pushed us up and down the field. Two touchdown drives, 151 yards. Our two drives combined, four plays, negative nine yards, zero positive yardage plays, and zero, zero, minus three, and minus six, and a turnover. I mean, you can't. That's as bad of a quarter of football as you can get on both sides of the
Starting point is 00:09:02 ball. So, I mean, the offense, the defense could have played out of its mind. We were still going to lose, but that third quarter, the defense got their butt kicked just as bad as the offense did. I mean, that was a bad, bad quarter of football.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Biz. I was relatively optimistic. Everything that possibly could have gone wrong. Did in the first half, Iowa for the first, I don't know, eight, 10 minutes of the game was out playing Penn state.
Starting point is 00:09:24 They easily could have at least been up three, nothing to not seven, nothing. If without the fumble there, they're moving the football, they're doing things. And yet all the breaks start kind of piling up a couple of calls. Don't go. I was way. And yet you're only down 10, nothing at the half. I came out into the second half feeling like they're hanging around. Maybe they got a shot, something funky happens. And then that first drive, what was it? 15 plays, 75 yards right down the field. And at that point, it was over. It was 17-0.
Starting point is 00:09:49 This team was not coming back from the three-score deficit. But it was crazy how quickly that changed, too. And that's on the defense. Like you said, there's no excuse. You come out of the locker room and get physically dominated like that in that first drive. It's game over. They knew that.
Starting point is 00:10:03 And that was a frustrating element when you do point some of the fingers at the defense well and i get iowa's defense is always going to have a bit of a bim but don't break element but at some point it was shocking to me because phil parker is an absolute genius at in-game adjustments but for whatever reason we just never adjusted and we let him just dink and dunk us to death i mean cooper dejan at least twice just gave a 10 yard cushion on third and seven. Like, you want eight yards? There's your eight yards. I don't get that.
Starting point is 00:10:29 He's your best player. Come up, press coverage, and make Drew Allard go over the top on you. It's a wet night, wet football. You know, adjust. Rarely can you complain about Phil Parker, but I thought his in-game adjustments were odd on Saturday. I didn't feel like we made any, and I feel like we just sat back and let them dink and dunk us to death. I mean, at some point, you got to put a little more pressure on. You got to come up and
Starting point is 00:10:52 bump and run. If they're going to beat you, they can go over the top. I mean, again, the defense wasn't the reason we lost the game, but I mean, at some point, you got to talk about, I mean, we can talk about the offense all day long and beat our head against the wall. So something new to complain about, I guess. Yeah, that's fun. Right. Especially out there and where was it? You and that was argument that that was on Cooper to Jean that he, I will go to my grave arguing that Cooper to Jean's got to be way more
Starting point is 00:11:20 aggressive in the coming up screaming Peter. I mean, he clearly was like pointing in that direction direction but i love cooper dejean the guy's a great player but uh he has not looked very comfortable as a partner he's he's not come up and got some balls a few times he's had a couple where he just doesn't look another cover about there on that situation you've got to be screaming bloody murder and i get it it's 110 000 people so maybe you're not gonna hear it anyway but he deserves at least some portion of the blame for that because neither of those guys it was what ds fernandez and someone else both you know moved an inch so clearly they didn't hear him so i mean it was shitty luck but there's also there's at least some blame to be put on him for not coming up and making a little more noise of that. But again, we're finding new things to complain about.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Iowa football. Well, there is a history of bounce backs, and we're going to get into that when we come back here on Locked On Hawkeyes. Can this team bounce back? What do they have in front of them? The schedule is incredibly easy, short of the game at Wisconsin, and how daunting exactly is that one? We'll talk about the history of bounce backs for Iowa and can it happen with
Starting point is 00:12:26 this team? We'll do that as we continue here on the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Biz, what do you got for us this week? And looking back at the bounce backs when we've had these conversations before there's no hope and hope comes out most times under kirk parents yeah and that's the one thing i mean you can be critical of our coaching staff but the one
Starting point is 00:13:58 thing i give coaches our credit for is they have a long history of bouncing back from these types of debacles. I mean, all you have to look back the last time we got throttled at happy Valley, we turned around and shocked Michigan the next week, but even the last, the last two years are perfect examples. 2021, you have a team that went from a second in the nation to two atrocious performances in a row. You get at home versus Purdue and then on the road against Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:14:26 People start to give up on them. What do you do? Win four in a row against very, very favorable schedule. Last year, same thing. We lose three in a row. The third one is an absolute embarrassment at Ohio State where everybody's ready to quit on the team, ready to – new quarterback, new everything.
Starting point is 00:14:44 What do they do? Bounce back, win four in a row with a very favorable schedule. So give the coaching staff credit. When they're down and everybody's ready to quit, they keep that locker room together and they keep the people that matter, the players, believing. And, you know, I'm always amazed how they never get more dissension in the ranks and they don't get some horrible comments and people that are ready to, you know, wide receivers or offensive players that are ready to throw or defensive players that are ready to circle the wagons. What Berman used to say, nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills. Well, nobody circles the wagons like Kirk Ferentz. You've got to give him credit for that.
Starting point is 00:15:31 That's one of the things he always does. So history says we'll bounce back, and what a perfect game to bounce back on because obviously we could spend hours talking about the debacle that is the Michigan State program and produce awful as well. So if you don't bounce back the next two weeks, we're in trouble. Something's wrong if we don't win the next two games. And I know... And win them decidedly. I don't know about that. For us.
Starting point is 00:16:01 Decidedly is not really our MO. So it's just weird. I mean, at this point, you know, the funny thing is after weeks like last week, people freak out and you get people that make ridiculous comments that, you know, we're going to go 10-2 and it's going to be a bad year. Bullshit. If we go 10-2, you're going to be happy. I'm going to be happy. We're all going to be happy. It's still college football.
Starting point is 00:16:19 You still got to win the freaking game. So go win them. I mean, that's, like like i said you can be mad at coach staff all you want but they they've done a heck of a job of winning the winnable games and do that we should be 10-2 at the end of the year yeah because everything short of wisconsin is a very winnable game so i'll pose it to this way because i liked how you kind of set this up any reason to think that it won't happen this time what's more likely? Not only Iowa finishing 10-2. Hell, they run the table.
Starting point is 00:16:49 They finish 11-1 or they don't even get bowl eligible. They only win two more games the rest of the year. They're 5-7. I would say it's the former. I think it's still more likely that this team even goes to Wisconsin, wins the rest of their games on their schedule, and finishes 11-1. And they're in India against whoever comes out of the East as opposed to the wheels completely falling off and this terrible schedule and they only win two more years i mean history tells you that that's the more likely option the thing that worries me a little trent and you know i have no
Starting point is 00:17:14 basis for this but i worry a little bit that k mcnamara may go off the rails a little bit he does not strike me you know sp Spencer Petras was the ultimate company man. I mean, man, he took one for the team. He, you know, he would step up there and take blame every week. I get the feeling Cade McNamara is frustrated. And I'm not sure he's taking the blame inward. I think he, I worry a little bit. Things go off the rails on Saturday and we lose.
Starting point is 00:17:46 He may say some things that maybe aren't what we're used to. And so I hope that's wrong. Again, this is me just purely worrying that he doesn't seem to be maybe as invested in the program as some of our other quarterbacks have been in the past. I mean, Spencer Petras, love him or hate him. Man, that guy fell on his sword after every freaking game. And, you know, I don't know. Just some of the things Cade says every once in a while.
Starting point is 00:18:05 And you hear his comments about him being fiery. And he gave, you know, there's an article in the paper I just read that talked about him giving a fiery post-game speech. That's great if you're willing to take some accountability yourself too, because you sucked. I mean, you were 5 for 14, and you didn't complete outside the first completion of the game. You didn't complete a pass farther than one yard down the field.
Starting point is 00:18:24 So you got to take some accountability of that yourself. I'm not saying he hasn't, but I'm not sure he's taken the accountability to the level that maybe some past Iowa quarterbacks have. So that is my one worry. History shows you that this team usually will bounce back, but I'm not sure they're quite as gelled and together as maybe some of the other
Starting point is 00:18:45 locker rooms have been in the past so yeah i mean we'll find out this week i mean it's pretty simple yeah kirk talks about leadership more than any coach in any sport that i've ever heard i've never heard a coach talk about leadership as much as he does it's incredibly important and what they are well they went out there and they brought in eight new guys, right? From the transfer portal. That's something that they never had. And that, that team building, I guess the way that the program is built, it is a little bit different. It's fractured a little bit more. You have guys that are looking more probably for themselves than they are ultimately about wearing a Hawkeye uniform. It was for pretty much every single one of them. was just the best opportunity right it was maybe the only chance to play big 10 football or to move up to the fbs left bcs left
Starting point is 00:19:29 so with all those things yeah i i understand where you're going and yeah great i mean i hope again i i want to be careful i don't want to say that kate mcnamara's been a bad team i don't think he has i don't think he's shown anything yet But you can tell there's a bubbling frustration in him that could boil over if things go bad. I hope we don't get to that point. I hope we beat Michigan State 31-14. Everyone's happy. And we start focusing on, you know, let's win out.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Because it's possible. I mean, Wisconsin's a totally different. I watched them against Purdue and they won. But the things that we used to struggle against Wisconsin, their defense is totally different. I watched them against Purdue and they won, but the things that we used to struggle against Wisconsin, they, their defense is totally different. They're now kind of a spread it out type team, which is,
Starting point is 00:20:11 you know, they've only got one running back now. I think Lucy's probably out for the year. And he, I mean, I think he had the same, it looked like, it looked like the same injury as Lachey.
Starting point is 00:20:17 So, you know, I don't know. There's not, there's not a game on the schedule we can't win, but as we all know, there's also not a game on the schedule we can't lose. It's not a know, there's also not a game on the schedule we can't lose as an Iowa team also. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:20:28 Well, Biz, we're going to wrap things up here, and we are going to look towards this week, our Lux of the Week when we come back, presented by FanDuel. We'll do that as we continue here on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Today's episode of Locked On Hawkeyes is brought to you by DoorDash. Well, we've all had that incident, right? Starting point is 00:22:05 All right, Biz, locks of the week. How'd you do last week? I won again, two in all. Ash Trenton biz back with you one final time on the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. All right, biz locks of the week. How'd you do last week? I won again, John two at all. I had the, I had the fighting Utes and they covered. So that was a good one. I don't remember yours. I have to remember your pick for you also. I probably, I don't know. I am not texting it to you because that's what I had been doing in the past. I don't, I would assume I didn't have a win because I did not have a good day in college.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Went 8-2 in the NFL on Sunday. That was great. And made back some of the money I lost on Saturday. That was brutal. Just absolutely brutal. But, well, the tee box is yours, I assume. What do you have this week? Your early lock of the week.
Starting point is 00:22:37 I'm taking a page out of your book, Trent, and going off the grid. We're going to go with a Sunbelt Classic. I think Georgia Southern is a legitimately good team. I watched a decent amount of them against Wisconsin a couple weeks ago. They gave Wisconsin fits for two and a half, three quarters. They probably should have been ahead through three quarters. I think Coastal Carolina stinks
Starting point is 00:22:56 compared to what they've been the last couple years. Georgia Southern is getting less than a touchdown. They get six and a half currently. Give me Georgia Southern. Anytime you can bet on Clay Helton, you do that, Trent. Give me Clay Helton and the Georgia Southern Eagles. I got one.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Speaking of your Utes, I know you love the Utes. Friday night, though, they go up to Corvett. That line stinks, Trent. I'm going to lay it with the Beavs. Just to be clear, I love the Beavs almost as much as I love the Utes. Those are like the two teams I'm obsessed with.
Starting point is 00:23:26 I love both those teams. I would love to see Andy Ludwig come in and be the offensive coordinator for Iowa. I've complained about that for, what, five years now. That's not going to happen. But, yeah, Oregon State, another team. The way they run the football, the physicality that Jonathan Smith has that team play with. This is going to be a physical football game here but I'm going to leave it lay it with the Beavers I'm going to take the three and I'll lay
Starting point is 00:23:48 it down there Oregon State my lock of the week minus three now here's a point spread that has changed throughout the week it is Iowa of course as they face off against Michigan State it opened up and the openers at eight it is moved up quickly to 11 and a half I saw there was a 12 and a half and a 13 that popped on the board. That was quickly brought back down to 12.5. But 11.5, 12.5, those are in the market right now. Hawkeye is a double-digit favorite at Kinnick Stadium, something that has not been great throughout the Kirk Ferens tenure.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Yeah, I saw somebody post at one point, they claimed it was 6.5 at some point. Man, I would have loved to get Iowa at 6.5. I don't think that ever actually got available to the public. Maybe it was out there before it got – the lowest I ever saw was 9.5. But, yeah, once it gets above 10, I'm not sure anybody in good conscience can feel confident about betting the Hawks to beat anybody with more than 10 points right now.
Starting point is 00:24:43 For the second week in a row, I think I said this last week too, but actually if I had to pick a side on this game, I'd pick the over. I actually think Michigan State's a turnover machine. They're going to make some mistakes. I think we'll – we've got to – I mean, their pass defense is atrocious. So I would assume we've got to come out and be a somewhat aggressive team again. So I think it'll be a little more high scoring game. The weather is supposed to be beautiful.
Starting point is 00:25:08 I think it'd be a little more high scoring game or over what? Was it 36 is the number? Yeah. I think, I think the two can stumble their way to 40 points combined. Mostly because I think our defense might score some points. That'd be good. That would be good.
Starting point is 00:25:21 I still, I think I'd lay it. You know, we talked about the bounce back, what we've seen from this team coming off of those kind of performances. I mean, you can go way back. You can take a look at recent history. I think I'd lay it. We're getting close to that point of no return, though.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I mean, if it's up to past 13, though, it is just so difficult to swallow. But I think Iowa bounces back and plays well this week. So if I had to make a pick and stay away from the total, I'd lay it with the Hawkeyes this week. It's something I rarely do. Two favorites in a week. Makes me feel a little bit dirty, but hopefully turns into a win. Biz, any closing comments?
Starting point is 00:25:55 Biz's beat. Got anything for us this week before we get out of here? I do not, Trent. You got to give me advance notice if you want one of those. Those don't just pop up out of thin air. It's been a while. Well, put that in your notebook for next week. Let pop up out of thin air. It's been a while. Put that in your notebook for next week. Let's get a business beat.
Starting point is 00:26:07 It's been too long. If we're officially doing this on Tuesdays, I've got to get Statboy involved here too. We've got to get him back in the loop. I don't think anybody really cares to listen to us. They just want Statboy info. That's where the viewers, that's where the listeners come from is obviously Statboy and the great
Starting point is 00:26:23 stat packs he throws out to us. I'm still alive in your Survivor Contest, too. We got to pick six games this week, though. Good God. Yeah, I'm really enjoying that contest. We got very lucky. Old Dominion, I think you and I both had Old Dominion, and they had to backdoor their way to a win against a bad FCS team.
Starting point is 00:26:40 So they stumbled to a 10-9 victory. Whatever it takes. I also had the hoosiers who survived double overtime against you had both you had both the two that knocked everybody out so we survive and we move on yeah for uh people that we biz put together the survivor contest you pick one team in week zero two teams in week one and on and on and on and you can only use a team one so we're starting to run out of some of the teams, and we're also running out of those FBS versus FCS games. Yeah, the first four weeks were basically freebies,
Starting point is 00:27:09 but now you actually have to pick. Finding six this week is not easy. If we keep going and you get to week eight, nine, or ten, it's going to really get tricky. Fun stuff. We watch the Iowa offense. We look for other things to entertain us throughout the course of the Iowa football season. All right, Brins, we'll talk to you again next week.
Starting point is 00:27:26 All right. Go Hawks.
