Starting point is 00:00:55 Place your first $5 bet and you'll get started with $200 in bonus bets guaranteed. Visit Fanduel.com to get started. Let's get started here today. No, we're not talking McNamara versus Petras, though. I guess it's a bigger conversation than I would have anticipated. Maybe my mind is broken as we talk about broken minds here at the quarterback position. It is Northwestern coming to town this week, and certainly when you think of Northwestern,
Starting point is 00:01:23 you think of some of those devastating losses throughout the year. Iowa has had a handful, maybe none as impactful as 2009. Iowa running through an undefeated season, and then Wooten gets Stansy in the end zone. He goes down. Iowa has an opportunity still at the Big Ten Championship game a week later, but there's been plenty of those moments. I remember vividly a year later, 2010, being in Evanston for the Iowa matchup against Northwestern and another comeback victory for Northwestern.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Iowa, Adrian Claiborne and the rest of that defensive line just suck and win because they had no depth. And by the fourth quarter of the game, they couldn't get to the quarterback anymore, and Northwestern came back in that one. because they had no depth, and by the fourth quarter of the game, they couldn't get to the quarterback anymore, and Northwestern came back in that one. There's been plenty of frustrating games throughout the years. Noah Fant, instead of going to him, it's Max Cooper in the end zone.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Whew, that was one. Oh, boy. Not a fun series, I'm sure, for Hawkeye fans to remember. This Northwestern team isn't very good, and I think we have to start right there. And though they come in with a three and four record, just a game different than the Hawkeyes four and three, you dive a little bit deeper into the statistical profile of the Wildcats and you see there are some major woes. Right now, they're 129th in the country in total offense. Now, we saw a bad offense a year ago. We saw an offense even worse than this one last season.
Starting point is 00:02:45 But they're averaging 286 yards per game. Rush offense, 104th in the country. Passing offense, 124th in the country. It has not gone well with their new offensive coordinator who came in from South Dakota State. A guy that I thought was at least intriguing. A young guy that's still in his 20s. It's not gone well. They moved quarterbacks around. They've done a whole lot. Scoring offense,'s still in his 20s. It's not gone well. They moved quarterbacks around.
Starting point is 00:03:05 They've done a whole lot. Scoring offense 119th in the country. Total defense, they are 56th and 17th against the run. So this is going to be a team certainly that you believe is going to be able to gear up, load up the box, and make Iowa beat them through the air. The good news is you can beat them through the air. And when we look at number one here of our Friday walkthrough, before we get Tom Cankert in here and talk a little bit about the game and some basketball with him, and a couple of basketball questions we're going to wrap up today, this has to be the game for Cade McNamara.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Now, I believe we are past the hopeful stage. And every day, as you know, I was hopeful. I was hopeful that we were going to see him shake off the rust, improve. And by the time that we got to this point in the season, that he was going to be humming along, at least at the highest level that he can do. As we saw a week ago in the first half, though,
Starting point is 00:03:59 that guy's not coming back. The Cade McNamara that we saw at Michigan, the Cade McNamara that we believed we were going to get when he transferred away from the Wolverine program, that guy's not there anymore. I don't think there is anything that you look at outside of hope that you can point to a Cade McNamara and say it's coming back. Well, this is the perfect opportunity for him. Whatever is left in Cade McNamara, it has to come out tomorrow against Northwestern. This cannot be a game where Iowa gets enough out of Caleb Johnson, finds a way to get the win, holds on, the defense has a bounce back effort, and they get the job done and they
Starting point is 00:04:38 win it 16-11. No, no, no. This needs to be 225, 250 yards through the air, a big game offensively, the bounce back, as we mentioned with the defense, we'll get to that momentarily. That's what you need out of this game. But most importantly, it has to be Cade McNamara. Because you can't go into next football season while we have our starting quarterback in Brendan Sullivan. Look, if Brendan Sullivan is not good enough to beat what we've seen at the quarterback position this year, then he can't be your quarterback next season. It's as simple as that.
Starting point is 00:05:14 If you truly believe that you have your guy for next year and you're not playing him right now, well, again, that's coaching malpractice, which we've seen plenty of times in recent history with Kirk Ferentz and company. That's where it starts. And if this thing goes poorly, let's make the change quick. Let's not wait till you're down 10-0.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Not wait till McNamara throws a couple interceptions. Look, we get a turnover, we get a three and out, we get something early. Let's go. Let's see. Brendan Sullivan obviously is going to have a little extra motivation going up against his team. I don't think that is any reason at all to actually go out there and play him because of that. But it is at least a carrot that's out there that you can dangle in front of him going up against his old squad, a guy that they were ready to move on from. They were ready to move on from Sullivan
Starting point is 00:06:01 a year ago. But you have to understand, you have to realize, and you have to look at this big picture. I also know that that's not the way that Kirk Ferentz operates. That's not the way that he builds his football program. We don't see very much of that. So that's another component to this one. Through the air, that's how you beat Northwestern. Northwestern this season lost in overtime against Duke,
Starting point is 00:06:24 a Duke team that by the way is what six and one right now, hung around against Indiana. I mean, that was a game in the fourth quarter against a Hoosier team that we know is incredibly talented. They blew up Maryland 37 to 10 before getting run off the field a week ago against Wisconsin. You can't give them opportunity. This is a team you just need to punish. And the betting markets indicate they're all about the Hawkeyes this week. Not only is Iowa betting nearly a two-point favorite, the steam has continued to come in on Iowa.
Starting point is 00:06:57 The betting public, and normally the people betting earlier in the week are people with a little more investment into it. They've been betting the Hawks all week long that they believe it's going to be a bounce back. We talked about this two weeks ago after the Ohio State game. Kirk Ferentz's greatest strength as a football coach is his ability to rally the trips, his ability off a loss that looks as bad as it's going to be to bounce back in a big time way. And I believe they will.
Starting point is 00:07:21 And I think most importantly, the defense is not going to look like it was a week ago because that was alarming. Look, we watched terrible offense for years now. We're used to it, right? But when you see that defense missing tackles all over the field, when you see guys out of position, when you see very simple route concepts and Iowa has no clue how to defend them, they still do not have the communication that you're looking for, the communication to go out there and to know when to turn it from the cornerback over to the safety.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Who's going to be switching where? It's been as bad as we've seen in the Phil Parker era in the defensive backfield. And that continues to happen as we're into the end of October. That's the last game in October. And we're still seeing these warts
Starting point is 00:08:03 show up for this football team it's eye-opening it's surprising but it is a reality that's what we have right now let's bring tom caker in here from hawkeye report get some basketball talk along with football talk we'll get his thoughts on the matchup against northwestern talk plenty of hoops men's basketball team their opener it's an exhibition game as justin wick former hawkeye and minnesota duluth come to town what are going to see from that Hawkeye team? Talk some basketball. We'll talk some football.

I'm Caker didn't hear his weekly spa as we talk Hawks football tomorrow basketball tonight of the men's variety. Tom, you're going to head over to Carver and check this one out tonight. Oh,
Starting point is 00:10:57 absolutely. I'll be there. Looking forward to the basketball. I'm looking forward to the basketball. Yeah. I haven't seen him out of sight out of mind. I'm looking forward to to the basketball more than the football. Yeah, it's because we haven't seen him out of sight, out of mind. I'm looking forward to following it
Starting point is 00:11:09 via Twitter, through the media, because I'm watching game one of the World Series. But what do you want to see tonight? Is there a player on McCaffrey's roster that maybe you want to get a... And I know it's exhibition, it's game one, but that you want to see how this team is starting to come together.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Or is it the entire, the entire product? Well, I'll go with my Moline guys. I'm really curious on Freeman taking the step year two becoming, you know, showing an outside shot and then how Brock Harding looks. And how he's developing as a leader for this team. And, and, uh, and then I'm really curious about the bench and some of the new faces, the, um, see if, uh, price Sanford takes a, uh, a leap, which I think he will in year two and, and, um, Cooper Koch in year one, I think he's going to be a significant contributor this year.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And then Sadu Traore and Chris Tajdo, I think we'll see those guys tonight. And curious to see what they can give the Hawks. Speaking of those young guys, if you had to kind of rank them in terms of minutes that they're going to see this year, Koch, Tajdo, Traore, Young, Sanford. When you put those guys kind of in a group, what do you believe the pecking order is just as it pertains to minutes? That's good. That's a great question. Yeah, I think it's probably Koch and Sanford and then Traore.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Okay. I think those, those three are kind of the top three. And then Pashtdo at least early. Now, if he comes on and develops, because I think he's pretty raw, but if he can give them some more energy, I think the big thing they're looking for from Traore is they're trying to get his motor to run hot all the time, where Paschdo kind of runs hot all the time. So there's something there but trary can shoot a little bit better he's a little bit better defensively he's just a little
Starting point is 00:13:12 more mature and developed so interesting uh it's gonna be interesting but i think there's a clear top 10 players and then after that it's bronze and and probably Mulvey as 11 and 12. That's my guess. You have been on the Brock Harding train, obviously, for a long time. Quad City Connections. He's going to likely get the start. It sounds like tonight and going to be the starting point guard. Same kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:13:37 How do these minutes get divvied up? Are we talking a 65, 70 percent of the time it's going to be Harding with well backing them up or is going to be closer to 50-50? I think it's going to probably be more shaded towards Brock having most of the minutes. That's just my gut feel. At least early, now if he struggles, then you've got a really good option. I don't think it's going to be like 20-20. I think it'll be more like, I don't think't think it'll be 30 10 but like 25 15 something
Starting point is 00:14:06 like that uh and you could see some you know i talked to fran a little bit they're not opposed to both of them playing together uh but it'll depend on the size of the backcourt they're going up against because as you know neither of those guys are like towering figures either. Is there any way for us to watch this game? BTN Plus. And that's the subscription service. And the great Jeff Settles is on the commentary. Hey, did I see, and I think it was your tweet, Tom, that is just cutting back his Big Ten responsibilities,
Starting point is 00:14:42 Big Ten network responsibilities this year? They just didn't mention him in the thing. I don't know if he, I'm going to talk to him tonight and find out, but he's really good. It's really good. And you know, I may get stuck watching him do Mountain West games.
Starting point is 00:14:59 And I always, I know him all the time. I'm like, yeah, I'll be surfing and I'll hear your voice. And then I'm just, I'm tuned into Air Force at Wyoming. There we go.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Let's go. Yeah. Yeah. I was surprised that he wasn't listed amongst the, amongst the analysts that are going to do games this year. Cause I mean, what more does he have to do? He's really good at what he does. You ready to go to football TC?
Starting point is 00:15:20 Yeah. It's the Friday walkthrough with Tom Cakert. And yes, begrudgingly here we are quarterback boy. It must be fun running message boards on times like this on tom caker oh my gosh it's you know it's it at this point it's a yearly thing yep yeah it really is it's a it's kind of just this thing we do every year we're not happy with the quarterback so it's thing we do every year that we're not happy with the quarterback so it's don't him it's cast fault uh i thought the most interesting thing that uh that kirk said on tuesday was basically hey it's tim lester's thing here okay so you know because i think everybody seems to think that uh uh kirk is the the evil the evil genius behind all this,
Starting point is 00:16:07 the man behind the curtain that's pulling all the strings. And you're kind of like, no, it's pretty much Tim's call. So we'll see. I get the feeling that the leash has gotten pretty short. And if you look at the numbers, and I put it in my game preview, they've scored, I think it's like 58 points just in the first half of games this year, 56. It was 56 points total this year, first and second quarter. They have just incredibly slow starts. Whereas in the second half, in the third quarter alone, they've got 67. In the fourth quarter, they've scored 72.
Starting point is 00:16:46 So they've outscored the first half individually in the later two quarters. So they have got to figure out a way to move the ball and get more points because it's just ridiculous What's been going on. It is. And, you know, Trent and I started to spend some of our opening segment discussing this at some point during live football, not practice. You have to know what Brendan Sullivan's got, right? Because you can't go into next year.
Starting point is 00:17:20 I wouldn't think with your hopes residing on Brendan Sullivan, who hardly played last year at the expense of Cade McNamara, who apparently has beaten him out. Yeah, and what I've heard is that Sullivan hasn't been great in practice. But we heard that last year, too, and everybody doubted it. So, you know, you can only go by what you see. And that's just kind of what they're trying to do. Cause I think if they were seeing something from Sullivan that would give them hope that,
Starting point is 00:17:52 Hey, he's ready and he should be out there instead of Cade, they probably would have done it. I don't think there's this blind loyalty that most Iowa fans think that there is, but he's also going to have to go out there and perform. If he goes out there and gets that opportunity, he's going to have to, have to play and see what he does and perform well. Otherwise you're just going to be like, okay, now, now what are we, uh, Marco Lane has time then, you know, is that the bandwagon filling up there again? I don't know. Yeah. Get ready for it, Tom. It'll be coming. It always does.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Would you rather have starting this week, Cade McNamara or Spencer Petras? Hi, Spencer. Yep. That's unanimous. Not unanimous. I am.
Starting point is 00:18:37 I am not on that one, but Spencer's, how about Spencer's thrown for like 400 yards every, every time out for, but again, they have like the worst defense in america yeah they're terrible yeah i mean so he's just gone in the whole time good for him have some fun his last go around chuck it around a little bit and and put up some big numbers so
Starting point is 00:18:57 how can they be this bad at evaluating quarterbacks or getting them ready to play whatever it is i mean year after year we're talking about more than a half decade now of just complete incompetence. These guys move on, and outside of Petras putting up numbers, they're terrible at their next spot too. How could they be this bad? Yeah, I think it's just some really bad evaluations. I was part of maybe getting sold kind of a bill of goods
Starting point is 00:19:22 with some quarterback coaches and stuff that make you believe that these guys are really good. And, but all those guys had, I think other offers from different places, legit places. So it's not like I was on this Island and, you know, they took this kid.
Starting point is 00:19:40 They took Marco Lainez because of this. I mean, all these guys had fairly comparable offers, I guess. So I don't know. It's the, I think that has been solved now because they actually have a quarterback who is evaluating and making these decisions. And I know, um, talking, just talking to the right people that Tim is on board with Jimmy Sullivan, who's coming in and obviously recruited, um, you know, the, uh, the cash rare kid. So those two guys are, are Tim Lester approved.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Uh, this is the week Legion breaks one. I think so. I do. do i mean he's so close he's he's he you know i do podcasts with chuck long and i referred ken you'll appreciate this i refer to him as evil knievel yeah because he's just he's like a daredevil he is 100 miles an hour down the ramp he's got one speed flying yeah he's got one just flying he's just flying. He's like he's sitting at Caesar's Palace going over those boxes. I remember. Well, we are old enough to remember that. Tom, you know the conversations about quarterback play,
Starting point is 00:20:54 but that defense on Saturday night was hideous. 19 missed tackles according to Pro Football Focus, and at times it looked even worse than that. This is a veteran team that brought back a lot of guys with a lot of experience was it chalk it up to one bad night or is there something else going on here because that was hideous you know pro football focus had um seth wallace shared this wednesday when we had him on a zoom thing. And he said that the football focus had Iowa number one in the country and tackling going into that game.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Now they're number six because they had such a hideous performance. So it would suggest that this was a one-time thing, but it's only a one-time thing until you go out and do it and show us that it was a one-time thing. So I suspect we're going to get a pretty inspired effort from the Iowa defense on Saturday. I suspect that they're going to probably try and pitch a shutout on Saturday. And, yeah, I think they're – I think have –
Starting point is 00:21:58 not that Sebastian Castro makes the difference, would have made the difference on Saturday, but certainly going to help when one of your better tacklers will be out there. And he is back? He's going to be back. That's what I was told, is he's going to be back. He was practicing this week, so unless he
Starting point is 00:22:15 has to step back late in the week, then he'll be back out there, and Ronan Tringer will be out there. You know, what's interesting is Seth Wallace said on Wednesday, he was talking to us, he didn't rule Tringer will be out there. You know, it's interesting, as Seth Wallace said on Wednesday, he was talking to us, he didn't rule out Jalen Watson starting at the other cornerback. Starting to see somebody.
Starting point is 00:22:32 They got to find somebody. Yeah. They have to find somebody. It's just like they just keep throwing guys out there, hoping one of them hits. And it's just like, you know, it's like spinning the roulette wheel and hoping that red comes up and it keeps coming up black. Like Trent's picks.
Starting point is 00:22:47 It's been a rough run. It's been rough. It's been a rough one. Oh, Trent. I know. You know this as a gambler. You're going to go in a cold streak, and I have hit it bad here the last few weeks. Iowa overs.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Just that Iowa overs. Think about that. And Indiana, and that's it. Tom Caker, HawkeyeReport.com. Joining us here on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. We continue. We talked a little basketball there. Let's wrap things up with some hoops talks.
Starting point is 00:23:13 I'll give you my prediction for Iowa Northwestern. We'll do that as we continue. This is the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Starting point is 00:24:26 Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Well, we talked some basketball there, and I asked something to Tom Caker, and I'm interested to see how this plays out. I'm looking forward to, I think, the men's basketball exhibition game in a weird way more than I am even the Iowa Northwestern football game. And yeah, we only get 12 football games a year. That's idiotic.
Starting point is 00:24:50 And well, I'm dumb a lot of times. And this is another one. I just want to see the squad. I want to see the renewed focus on the defensive end. I want to see improved rebounding. I want to see if all the lip service we're hearing about this team, actually, at least in an exhibition game, comes to fruition. I also believe that we're going to see Fran McC, at least in an exhibition game, comes to fruition.
Starting point is 00:25:10 I also believe that we're going to see Fran McCaffrey himself with a renewed focus. Coaching for the first time without having one of his kids on the team, I think it's going to be impactful. I think it's going to be something that at times was uncomfortable, and you're going to see a more comfortable Fran McCaffrey. You're going to see a more focused Frank McCaffrey. And I think maybe even a more energized Frank McCaffrey. I really believe that that's something that's going to pop. But you look after the guys that we know. Owen Freeman, Brock Harding, Josh Dix, Sanford. After those guys, you know, some of these new pieces and exactly how they're going to fit on this Iowa basketball team.
Starting point is 00:25:44 these new pieces and exactly how they're going to fit on this Iowa basketball team, I think that's something that is incredibly intriguing to see what Sadio Chor is going to look like after playing a season ago, having some nice numbers at Manhattan. This is still a big step up. I mean, he wasn't a mid-major player. The Metro Athletic League, that's a low major, and this is a pretty significant step forward. Can either of those freshmen pop? Can Cooper Koch be a guy that can be an impactful player? Are we going to see anything out of Chris Tajio and what we've heard, that elite, the elite level athleticism that he has? How does the point guard situation shake out? Now, is it a 50-50 split?
Starting point is 00:26:16 It's going to be Brock Harding that's going to get the start. After that, it's going to be Drew Thelwell. So we're going to see both those guys out there. Is it going to be 30 minutes versus 10? Is it going to be 25, 15? Exactly how that point guard situation kind of shakes out. We know the connection between Owen Freeman and Brock Harding, and I'm excited to see how that plays out this season. Look, I believe this team is going to be an NCAA tournament team. I don't think it's a stretch with what they have returning, coupled with the down nature of the Big Ten this year, that this is going to be a team that's going to win 11, 12,
Starting point is 00:26:49 maybe even 13 games in this conference. I think this team is that good. We know they're going to score. We know also they're going to probably struggle on the defensive end, but if they can mesh these pieces together. Now, the early going schedule, it sets up really well. I think Iowa's got a real chance to put together a really nice, solid season. And they're going to have a chance to get off to a good start. Of course, they get Iowa State coming into their building. Cyclones are a preseason top 10 team. All those neutral court games that they have against Utah, against what, Utah State.
Starting point is 00:27:20 And what is the third one I can't think of? Oh, Washington State. All those, Iowa, at least on the surface right now, is favored in each of those three matchups in Sioux City. Sioux Falls, excuse me. Kansas City. And also the Quad Cities. They'll be playing those neutral court matchups.
Starting point is 00:27:36 So I think it's going to be a fun season. Yes, are there going to be elements? And I understand the other part too. I know for a lot of you, none of it matters. None of it matters for this men's basketball team until we see the breakthrough. Until we see this team in the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. That you're checked out. You have Fran fatigue. That there's nothing short of that that will bring you back. And even with that, I know there's a segment of the fan base that just
Starting point is 00:28:03 can't get there. You look at the way that they're budgeted NIL-wise. You look at the way that people have invested in the program. They're behind the eight ball, but they have year in, year out, solid teams, competitive teams. You know what you're going to get out of their squad? It's an entertaining brand of basketball, even at times it drives you nuts. I think it's going to be a fun winter though for the Iowa Hoops team. Thanks for making Locked On, Hawkeyes, your first listen every day. We got you covered.

Starting point is 00:28:59 In fact, maybe we'll do that after the basketball game here this evening depending on the way viewing goes for that one. As I said, really intrigued by this basketball team and excited to see them out on the hardwood. Thanks, as always, for making Locked on Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
