Well, the week gets off to a rough start here this week.
Kayla Brown has been arrested.
And what does that mean for the Iowa Wide Receiver Group?
We'll break things down.
Plus, Wayne Draze is going to stop by, formerly of ESPN,
now helping out at the University of Iowa,
and a great book that the writers at The Daily Iowan all worked on.
All coming up today as we're coming to you on remote,

But this summer, FanDuel is hooking up
all customers with a boost or a bonus daily. That's right, there's something for everyone
every day all summer long. Visit fanduel.com slash lock nine to get started. Well, we get started
today with the news. A disappointing start to the week after the announcement came from KCCJ
in Iowa City that there has been a arrest of Caleb Brown.
Now, we've talked a lot about Caleb Brown and his importance to this Iowa football team,
what they are and what they're going to be going forward,
and just how incredibly important he is to have the kind of season to get this offense,
even at okay levels.
And that's what we've really talked about more than anything,
is just getting this thing average. That's it, right? Just make them average. And if they can do that, just what a
step forward is going to be after what we've seen over the last two and a half seasons. So you got
that obviously a huge component to that. And Caleb Brown is the most talented guy there. Now, when
you're talking about a lot going on in terms of last season, remember, it was a
slow build to even get him out there and have him out there on the field a bunch throughout the
course of the season. I think we all got excited when we saw him out there making his commitment
to Iowa and what he was going to be. It took a while. There was a lot of rumblings that maybe
there were some issues, maybe getting to the doghouse a little bit, how to practice,
what time to show up to practice, those kind of things.
But you also have to give credit to Caleb Brown that he was able to work through those
things and give himself an opportunity to get out on the field last season.
And he did that.
And over the final couple of games of the year, we saw how talented he can be.
He's 20 years old, had a fake ID.
All right. And that's not great.
Don't like that.
The OWI is the most concerning of these.
And what we've seen in the past is
this is normally a one game suspension that comes down
and that's what's been handed down in the past
when an OWI has been handed out
to one of these student athletes.
There was a little bit more here.
And I don't think it's the, as mentioned, the fake ID, but I mean, it goes hand in hand, right? Iowa City,
I think a lot of people, maybe myself included, maybe, maybe went down that path way back in the
day. I think we're past the, right? We're past that now? 25 years ago? I think I'm all right.
Okay. But here's the other component.
This article comes in from the Des Moines Register.
Brown was observed drinking, driving, excuse me, a black Dodge Durango with heavy front
end damage, including a front wheel that was completely turned sideways.
Brown allegedly backed the vehicle onto a lawn and began spitting the tires.
All right.
This is where we get a little bit iffy.
Now, game one is Illinois State. Game two, that's when Iowa State comes to town. And I think we all know
how difficult that game is going to be. A coin flip type of game is the way that the Vegas
oddmakers have already made this. That's going to be something that they look at. And now you've
got to figure it out. Is Jarrett Bowie ready to take a step forward? Caleb Brown, I thought,
was going to be a huge part of this team and what they're going to do in the passing game. And I still
believe that's going to be the case. I don't think there's any doubt that this is going to be
a monster part of what they're going to try to do and what they have to do going forward,
throwing the football around, because they just don't have a ton of depth there. We've seen that.
And trying to find those pieces coupled with the new system, Caleb Brown is going to be an
incredibly important part of them putting it all together. Is he going for a game? Is this multiple games? We will see,
but trying to work your way back again after already being in the doghouse a little bit,
not a great look for Caleb Brown and a guy I think we're all hopeful for because we see the juice.
We see what he can absolutely be going forward for Iowa, and if Iowa is going to take that big step forward this season, I believe he's going
to be a huge, huge component to that.
We got more here.
Lockdown Hawkeyes, we kick off the week.
We're going to talk with Wayne Drey's.
Wayne Drey's formerly of ESPN for a long time.
I remember Wayne went back speaking a long time ago.
I was a student at the University of Iowa.
He was a great writer for the Daily Iowan before moving on right after college and getting his job at ESPN. Worked there for a number of years, is now back
working at the University of Iowa. He is a professor at the University of Iowa, and he's
also helping out with the newspaper, the Daily Iowan, and they put together a really cool coffee
table book, if you will. So a little bit more information on that with Wayne Drey's. We'll talk
Hawkeyes with him. We'll talk a little Cubs.
Famously, one of the more famous Cubs fans out there in the media space and going up to, of course, the World Series, what, eight years ago.
And that lead up there.
Just a lot of cool stuff with Wayne and a good guy and a good Hawkeye.
No doubt about it.
We'll do that as we continue.
This is Lockdown Hawkeyes.

Talk to Wayne Dre, shall we?
I spoke with Wayne Dre the last time when Ed Thomas was murdered,
and Wayne was writing the piece on Ed Thomas
and reached out to somebody at KXNO, and I just happened to be here.
Wayne and I spoke, and Wayne and I are about to speak again,
along with Trent Condon.
Wayne, how are you?
Good to speak with you.
That was 15 years ago.
Good to speak with you. It feels like years ago. Good to speak with you.
It feels like about 15 months ago, maybe.
Yeah.
Time flies, huh?
Yeah, it really does.
No doubt about it.
Well, I saw your tweet that came out about the –
is it a coffee table book?
Is that what the 2024 women's basketball book –
is that what it would be kind of like?
Yeah, that's how I would describe it.
You know, we set the goal at Iowa of kind of working with the students to create something that, number one, you know, you put on your coffee table.
But number two, would just sort of be the ultimate keepsake to commemorate this incredible run that Lisa Booter
and the Hawkeyes have had here the last few years.
It's something that you should always look back in 5, 10, 20 years
and remember it by.
I grew up in Chicago, and I've got a couple of Bulls books like that
and Blackhawks books like that.
That was sort of the template to kind of create something like that.
You mentioned those, and I have one, I believe, books like that and that was sort of the template to kind of create something like that you uh you
mentioned those and i have one i believe from one of the maybe the boy bull return team of the
alma bull in 2001 uh that the daily i don't put together you're we're a staff member as a student
at the di and people in the industry consider the daily iowan one of the best newspapers student run
newspapers out there what makes working for that and now coming back and doing it as a professional,
what makes the Daily Iowan so renowned across the country?
Well, I think, first of all, the investment that the university
and the donors that support the Daily Iowan put into that place.
There's a long history of, obviously,
incredible writing and storytelling
at the University of Iowa,
and there's a great sense of pride
in that newspaper and that news organization
that our people support.
And then with that, I'd say we just get
some incredible, incredible students.
You know, when you look at this book
and what we what what they put together you know honest to God you would have no
clue I was telling my 10 year old daughter the other night when when my
copies arrived she could not believe these were students I mean it is it is
the level of talent and a storytelling and photography and just the students that we get there,
it just makes it a special place.
And I think, you know, we all create a great sense of pride.
I mean, I have a great sense of pride in that place.
And anybody you call that works at Daily Iowa, whether you need a favor or you need this,
they're always willing to help that place continue to succeed.
or you need this, they're always willing to help that place continue to succeed.
The fact that it's been in circulation, I guess you would call this, since 1868.
I mean, Mike, I have no idea I've been around that line.
I didn't grow up in the state, but when I just saw that this morning,
that certainly jumps off the page.
So was this planning stages?
Does it go back to the end of the game against LSU and start right at that period?
Or when does this book start following the 2014?
Yeah, so it really kind of got going as we got sort of into New Year.
And Danny Wilcox-Fraser, who works with a lot of the storytellers to daily island uh had done a a documentary about the wrestling team a few years ago i mean he had
the idea of uh putting together putting into some sort of a book with the basketball team and seeing
if they would you know grant us special access and so you know we met with coach bluder and
different folks in the arts department.
Obviously, you know, December, January was far from where they ended up. We had no idea how the
season would go, but they were incredible in allowing a few of our photographers to basically
be embedded with them for the rest of the year. And we kind of decided, look, you know, if they lose the Big Ten championship
or, you know, it ends in the Sweet 16 or whatever,
we still will have these incredible memories of what this year has been
and what last year was.
And then for it to continue to go and, you know,
the incredible comeback against Nebraska in the Big Ten title tournament game.
And then, you know, we've got our photographers on the plane.
And, you know, they're in Albany.
And then they're in Cleveland.
And then we see the images coming back, Trent.
And it's just like, this is wild.
I mean, I went and got a little copy of Rare Air, the behind-the-scenes Jordan book that Walter Ios had done.
And honestly, I mean, some of the pictures and the access that these students got are comparable to what he did with Jordan.
Speaking of that, I had just a kind of wow media moment.
It's Richard Deitch, the longtime sports media columnist.
Listen to his podcast weekly. kind of wow media moment is Richard Deitch, the longtime sports media columnist.
Listen to his podcast weekly.
All of a sudden he has three members of the Daily Iowan on his national podcast.
Is he really?
Good for him. Including kind of roaring from right here, Darlene Catholic.
Her dad is the baseball coach for the Maroons and a football coach over there.
She was your sports editor this last year.
A couple other people that were there.
Just explaining that to a national audience. And you guys see it. It's a local story for us, but this became a national story.
What did maybe the people that you work with, the young people that you're working with here,
what did they get this kind of experience, not just having a story that matters in Iowa City
or even in the state of Iowa, but mattered nationally, and people are reading their stories nationally.
I tried to hammer in my students and in my classes,
you need to understand how unique and incredible this opportunity is.
Even if you are not a journalism student,
the fact that you'll be able to tell your grandkids that you went to the University of Iowa the year Caitlin Clark was a senior and set the record, I mean, I appreciate the
heck out of it.
On top of that, for those who are storytellers, you know, I would tell them, look, like, you're
in the Carver Press Box today, and oh, by the way, like, you're sitting next to the Washington Post and the CBS Sunday morning show.
And, oh, by the way, Robin Roberts will be here tomorrow.
You are doing stories with them.
And look, when I was in Iowa 25 years ago, certainly there was a lot more national media. But what this was and what it became and the experiences that they had dealing with a scrum of, you know,
75 reporters with cameras and microphones all trying to talk to Kalen, you know, after a practice or whatnot,
all those things are just incredible experiences.
And we had, you mentioned Canada.
Canada's amazing.
So many great students that got it and
just rose to the occasion and that only stuff for the book but some of the stories that they wrote
the paper and wrote online and we're just they just did such great work I was I mean immensely
proud doesn't cover the feelings I had about what was produced.
Have you got any feedback, Wayne, from Coach Bluter or Jensen
or some of the players, whether they're still on the roster,
they've moved on?
Have you got any feedback from them, and if so, their thoughts?
Yes, everything we've heard has been absolutely fantastic.
I don't know if Coach Jensen is actually capable of being all that negative,
fantastic. I don't know if Coach Jensen is actually capable of being all that negative,
but she absolutely loves the book. A lot of the girls have, a lot of the women I stay have tweeted about it, have commented. The athletic department absolutely loved it as well.
It's been fun to see a lot of the players on Instagram.
Some of the photos are online and for them to retweet the photos or
put them on their stories or tag their teammates.
So yeah, I mean, that was the goal to have something they can keep with
themselves forever and I'm proud to say I feel like we did that.
How are you enjoying your new role, being back in Iowa City at least a few days a week,
teaching over there and doing that and giving back?
What's it like now being on the other side of the podium?
It's been an absolute joy.
I could not enjoy it any more.
I was someone who, when I was in school there, really appreciated the instructors I had who were passionate,
who had gone out and done it in the real world,
who had those experiences.
And I always told myself that whenever my time at ESPN was done,
I wanted to be able to do that, to go back and light some of their fires,
if you will, to be able to do that and then do it at the place,
that means the most to me.
It's been awesome.
I talked to J.A. Adande before I started this,
and J.A. does it over at Northwestern.
He said to me, he goes,
look, there is nothing better than doing this at your alma mater
where it really means something to you.
To be able to do that and for them to take a chance on me and put me in front of a classroom
with little to no experience and have it go well, it's been fantastic.
You know, aren't we seeing a number of it?
Didn't Tim Colasaw leave the Dallas Morning News teaching out Maryland maybe?
Am I got that right?
Yep, yep.
At the Povich Institute and Gene Wojciechowski this fall will start teaching at Tennessee yeah there's a lot
of us out there I I don't know if that means that we're getting old or what
exactly is happening but it's there's a lot of great great minds out there
teaching sports journalism. Well Wayne you're obviously famous for your two
decades at ESPN and one of one story that always jumps to my mind is you delaying open heart surgery because of the Cubs.
Now, hopefully that tickers everything's all good because this bullpen has been atrocious.
We'll test that heart.
Yeah.
Been doing a number, I think, on a lot of people's hearts.
Testing my heart, testing my levels of depression, a lot of things.
It's funny you say that because I've let myself be a crazy fan
when it comes to the Cubs and it comes to the Hawkeyes.
I am an unreasonable tweeter.
Like all the people that yell at me when I write stories,
I am that guy with those tweets.
Twitter, like all the people that yell at me when I write stories, I am that guy with those.
And I keep coming back to like every day I'm convinced, all right, today's the day.
They're going to win.
They're going to get it right.
They're going to go on a streak and it's all going to be over.
Four, seven or eight runs?
Right.
And then even yesterday, you know, they're up six to one and they got to give up a grand.
Barely get out of there.
I'm like, I don't know it's uh it's frustrating it's it's you know it's not the season i thought it would be
but uh you know that's why we appreciate as much as we do when they're fantastic as rare as that is
it was great see kyle hendricks have his start, too. Trent and I talked about that in our first hour.
It really was.
I mean, you've got to feel good for him, right?
And, look, he's making millions of dollars.
I get that.
And he's got his World Series ring, but he's been a terrific coach. So, essays from Billie Jean King, Lisa Blutter, Jen Jensen, Hannah Stolke, Beth Goetz, Jackie Stiles, Barbara Wilson, Holly Rowe,
who followed the team as close as anybody
in the national media.
This is all part of it.
So it's kind of what you say that a chapter and then pictures go along with this kind
of give us a look inside the book before we let our listeners know how you can get
a hold of it.
Yeah, what I would say is it's sort of a photo.
It's a photo driven book with remarkable behind-the-scenes images.
And then sort of throughout the book are essays and voices of people throughout the state, throughout the country, about sort of what this moment meant.
What did it mean for girls across the country? What did it mean for Iowans? What
did it mean for the university? What did it mean for Hannah Stolke, for example? And so
that was kind of the goal was, again, incredible photography. And then the voices of these
people who were some of them who were on the inside, some of whom were fans. Jackie Stiles wrote for us about, you know,
what it was like to watch Caitlin break her record
and the first time she ever recruited Caitlin or saw Caitlin in a game, actually.
So there's a lot of fun stories, but it's just, it's a beautiful, beautiful book.
And I'm really proud of the storytelling we did as well.
Really, it's just fantastic.
Glad you got John Boenkamp.
His friend from the program joins us every couple of weeks and he spent a lot
of time at Carver Hawkeye in front of hundreds of people that were following
the team and now obviously the phenom became.
All right, so let's get to this way before we let you go.
How did folks get a hold of this book?
How can you order it?
So for those who are not patient, you can go to dailyisland.com, spelled out backslash book, and you can still order there.
And then as I understand, over the course of the next month-ish, there are going to be books showing up at Shields, at various bookstores in the
state.
They're going to be getting out there as well.
But if you want one as soon as possible, they are in Iowa City.
Put in your order at dillyisland.com backslash book, and they'll get it shipped out to you
as soon as possible.
The sales I'll pay Pay2 have been incredible.
We've sold, at the last I heard, several thousand books,
which is amazing because every single penny of proceeds
goes to help students travel to cover games,
to cover the election.
Every penny goes to experiential learning at university
for journalism students. So there's no big book publisher making money on this. learning at university for journalism students.
So there's no big book publisher making money on this.
It's all open to students.
Going back, no doubt about it.
Wayne, thanks for jumping on.
I saw this on Twitter, wanted to get you on and talk about this.
It's going to sell very well, one has the feeling.
Good to talk to you, Wayne Drace.
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
I appreciate it.
Enjoy your day.
Go Hawks.

Trent Conner back with you one final time here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast coming to you remotely this week out in Colorado and I will have some more shows for you throughout the course of
the week get you up to date on everything going on as we get ready for Hawkeye football right
around the corner basketball news we got a lot of recruiting that we're going to get into as well.
And that's kind of where we start this week off after the weekend that was.
Iowa's huge recruiting weekend.
We're going to talk about this a lot more a little bit later on in the week.
But just the opportunity for this Iowa football team.
You got all the people on campus that you want.
You have all the guys that are already officially committed.
And then you're bringing in kind of that next tier,
that next group of guys that are probably at the top of your wishlist and getting commitments
from these kinds of guys is really what dictates at least for Iowa and their perspective, just how
good the recruiting class is going to be. And I was not a team that recruits up there at the upper
echelon of the sport. It's just not what it is. We're not talking about classes year after year
that are even the top 20 in the country. But if Iowa can live in that 25 to 30 range year after year recruiting-wise, you feel
like they're in pretty good shape.
And the way that they have adapted and shown the ability to go out there in the transfer
portal and attack it when need be, or maybe more importantly for a developmental program
like Iowa, keep guys around for an extra season, as opposed to going off to the NFL draft guys
that are third-year, fourth-year players, even fifth-year players, and deciding, hey,
if we can get them back for another season, as opposed to them going off to the NFL and being
maybe a fifth, sixth-round draft pick, that's something that would work a whole lot better
for us. It looks to be the case, and it's certainly the way that this football team
is built this season. We'll talk more about that here throughout the course of the week.
Obviously, the big news, as we talked about at the top, Caleb Brown arrested and dealing
with those calls that are coming his way, including the OWI and what's that going to
mean for the Iowa recruiting wide receivers going forward here and what they're going
to look like depth chart wise.
We'll talk about that and tack more here throughout the week.
Make it a good one.
We'll be back with you tomorrow.
