We got our first glimpse of the Iowa football team and the new offensive system with Tim Lester on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. And I think overall some positive returns.
Starting point is 00:01:09 We're going to break things down. Scott Dockerman is going to be joining us here a little bit later on. Great conversation with Doc, who is as plugged in and gets as deep into the weeds as anybody you're going to find in the Iowa football front and does a really good job. And we'll do that with Doc coming up here momentarily. But kick things off with just some of the things that I was able to see Iowa football front and does a really good job. And we'll do that with Doc coming up here momentarily. But kick things off with just some of the things that I was able to see and talking to some few people also in Iowa City and kind of a breakdown of overall 15 practices in what we get of spring football.
Starting point is 00:01:38 When Tim Lester was hired, if you were an everydayer, you know, initially it was a very much a meh from me. I was not overly excited about the hire. Didn't feel like this was going to be somebody that was going to be able to bring in a new positive influence to the offense and need to see more. Well, he has certainly said all the right things. And from what we saw on Saturday, I think there is hope that this offense can be competent. Now, when we're talking about the Iowa offense, the expectation level should not be that this is suddenly going to be a top 25, even 30 offense in college football. We have rarely seen that in 25 years of Kirk Ferentz.
Starting point is 00:02:16 2002 was one of those seasons, but it's a rarity that we see really an elite dynamic offense with what Iowa puts out on the field. And as Kirk Ferentz has been around longer, as he has become more and more certainly conservative as he ages as a football play caller, what he wants to see on the football field. And you understand that that happens with most everybody. And it doesn't matter what you're talking about as a coach, as just a person, that's usually the way that people go for the most part as they get older in their life.
Starting point is 00:02:46 And it shouldn't come as a surprise. So what we're talking about the baseline here, look, let's get better than dead last. Let's have a top half offense in college football. Now, I think that's the high watermark. I mean, this would have to be everything's clicking. Cade McNamara comes back and he's a hundred percent and he's looking like the guy he was a couple of years ago when he was starting for a full season for the Michigan Wolverines and led them to the college football playoff and led them to a Big Ten
Starting point is 00:03:13 championship. I mean, you did see him at that level and probably even surpass the level he was playing at in that season for that to happen for Iowa to get up, you know, in that 65 range, top 65 yards per game, points per game, even yards per play, whatever metric you want to use to get to that level, everything's going to have to be right. Offensive line remains the biggest part that we wonder about. Though there is a ton of experience here, it just hasn't been great. And though it was better in the run game a year ago, we're still not talking about an elite offensive line. Now, Mason Richmond was incredibly banked up last season, and that is the hope. If he can come back healthy, two years ago as a sophomore, at minimum, he was a pretty
Starting point is 00:03:54 good left tackle. We know Connor Colby was never a tackle. He moved inside the guard. He's become a pretty good guard. Jennings Dunker, I thought, acquitted himself incredibly well in his first campaign as a starter a year ago. You have depth inside. Logan Jones, who the coaches love. I'm more of a Tyler Ellsbury guy myself at the center position. They get Cade Borud over the weekend. There's a potential help inside, either at the center or the guard position. Bo Stevens.
Starting point is 00:04:22 They got dudes. That's what I'm saying. Now, are they high-level guys? Are they high-level NFL draft picks. They got dudes. That's what I'm saying. Now, are they high level guys? Are they high level NFL draft picks? They're not. We don't have anybody on this offensive line that is that, but it has to start up front. And I think there were some signs of that. Now the running game, I mentioned that we saw some glimpses a year ago of it getting better. They moved away from the traditional inside and outside zone that they ran so often. And a big reason for that is the change in the rules of college football and the way they were able to block and block on the back end
Starting point is 00:04:50 and cut blocking, those kind of things. And because of that, we saw them a lot more ISO, a lot more hat-on-hat type of blocking. You just find your man and move him out of the way, and that's what you're going to do. And it worked out well. Nice season last year in the Iowa offense. Again, putting that caveat out there for Williams.
Starting point is 00:05:08 We saw him, I think, take a step forward. Caleb Johnson, I think there's going to be more. And with Caleb Johnson, there were some metrics two years ago during his freshman campaign. He had that long touchdown run against Nevada where he was up there. He was moving. It was one of the fastest runs by a college running back that season. And because of that, this is a guy with a the big body takes a while for him to get going well now that they're at least showing something right pre-snap we're seeing iowa use motion a lot more
Starting point is 00:05:36 and that motion can trick the eyes of the defensive players it also has to make them think more and the brian ferentz offense at times we always heard about how difficult it was to pick up, which is baffling because defenses were able to seemingly pick it up every single time. And they get downhill because there was never a threat of a play down the field. There was never a threat of them doing anything off script. And when it was, it was usually disastrous. It was a stupid jet sweep at the wrong time. It was an end round.
Starting point is 00:06:04 It was dumb plays that just, frankly, rarely was usually disastrous. It was a stupid jet sweep at the wrong time. It was an end round. It was dumb plays that just frankly, rarely, rarely work. But that aside, now you have motion, you got the linebackers, you got the safeties. They're not just going to be able to crash down as they have been the last couple of years, coupled with plays down the field, actually taking shots up the field. I know it's a foreign concept, Hawkeye fans, that we've seen the last couple of seasons. Yes, actually trying, just even trying to make a play down the field, how that can have that safety take a step back, that can have that linebacker. Just pause for a moment. These are the small things, the little things that are incredibly important
Starting point is 00:06:36 for this Iowa offense to take a step forward. Quarterback play has to be better, and quarterback play has been atrocious now the last four years. We never got to see a healthy Cade McNamara after the injured quad that he had back in August camp during the kids day open practice in the middle of August though he played he was not even close to 100% not only coming off a major knee injury coupled with that we never got to see him remember he couldn't even take snaps and go with quarterback sneaks under center, and they had to run a lot more shotgun than they wanted to a year ago just because he was so limited in his mobility and his ability to push off.
Starting point is 00:07:12 We never got to see this guy at 100%. We know Deacon Hill's not the guy. We know they have to go into the portal and find somebody else and find, at minimum, a backup quarterback, maybe a guy that can go and push Cade McNamara for the starting job. I think that would make a ton of sense and something that they definitely need to do. Ty Thompson was a guy we got excited about for two days, and then he ends up committing to Tulane,
Starting point is 00:07:35 so we never got to see him even on campus, but that's the kind of guy that they're going to be looking for. Now, we're getting to the point, we've only got a week left of the transfer portal being open, and they've got to make some waves. I know they're trying. I know they're looking. And if the right guys become available, anticipate they're going to be able to bring them in.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Not only do we know Deacon Hill is not good enough to be a starting quarterback in the Big Ten, but you also throw into the fact just all the negativity that surrounded it. Just him taking reps. Remember, Kate McNamara's injured. He's coming off an ACL tear. He's not going through reps. Well, you have to have somebody take the number one reps. And I do like what they did with Lyon as giving him both the number two and number three reps, getting him more acclimated and just giving him more opportunities because he needs it. He needs to come along as a passer. We'll see if he's done enough at minimum for them to say,
Starting point is 00:08:22 you know what? We maybe can do something here. Maybe this is a guy that we can continue to build with the great running ability that he has, and we can make him actually a quarterback down the line. It's probably going to still take some work, but we'll see coming out of spring practice exactly what that is. They got to get the scholarships, and that's another big component that we've talked about a lot, but going to talk some Iowa football. We got a lot more coming your way. Mention Scott Dockerman. He's going to come into some Iowa football. We got a lot more coming your way.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Mention Scott Dockerman. He's going to come into the program next. We will talk a little bit with Doc about everything that he saw over in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday and break things down with him. Starting point is 00:11:17 Dr. Doc, Scott Dockerman joins us from the Athletic on a Monday as we recap what we saw, what he saw at Kinnick Stadium over the weekend as Iowa had their final practice of the spring, and we will see them again in August for kids day before their first game against Illinois state in September. Doc, as always appreciate your time. How are you? And did you get all warmed up after a chilly day over at Kinnick stadium? Yeah, I, I, I just decided to go ahead and stay in the press box for most of it.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Cause that way I could see it with my binoculars over the top and I could see how the motions are impacting the play so that was I had the kind of the bird's eye view as they say not a bad thing I know you do a lot of charting kind of seeing those kind of things and you've seen it I've seen it I've been screaming about it since Tim Lester took the job this is going to be a different offense every offensive coordinator has had a different offense, even if you don't want to believe it. How different was it to you seeing it and knowing they're still working, they're still implementing, but how different is this going to be when we get to September, when we get to that first game and a lot of the national media probably see in Iowa for the first time and the offensive scheme, how different is
Starting point is 00:12:21 it going to look? It's significantly different. And I know a lot of fans, I had to try to explain to them on some of my comments under my story that they don't believe it's going to change because, well, it's Kirk Ferentz and it's not going to change. No, it's changed. It's completely different. And there's a lot more motion. There's a lot. The patterns are different. I would say the spacing is different among the routes uh you know it's one practice they're not going to go too detailed in so many different areas but
Starting point is 00:12:52 you could just see that the layout is so much different than what it once was and and so will people recognize it i don't know i mean i think it really matters about, you know, what kind of success are they going to have if they, if they score 17 points and run for 110 yards and complete half their passes that people are going to think it's the same old Iowa offense, even though it's completely different. But I think what I saw enough of, uh, both in practice and then kind of what I was told was, look, this is look, it's really helpful to our running game first. And because the passing game is not anywhere near where it needs to be or is or should be, I think you could spot some differences, some challenges for the defense just in trying to guess where the ball is going to go and how it's going to get there.
Starting point is 00:13:46 You know, one of the most disappointing aspects I thought of last season, we saw the run game make improvement. They got better, but a lot of that was LaShawn Williams. Caleb Johnson, I thought was on his way to super startup and it just, it didn't click last season for him. A little bit banged up. We've heard those kinds of things, but I heard some good things about the new style, the new style of offense and how it kind of works with his skill set. What you saw from Caleb Johnson and his chance, when Ola Sean's going to be there, he's going to be doing things, good things out of Moulton too, at the number three running back
Starting point is 00:14:18 position. But Caleb Johnson, a chance at a breakout with this kind of offensive system for him. chance at a a breakout with this kind of offensive system for him it's possible and the reason why i say that is because what this defense what this offense does with its more with its motion is it forces conflict at the second level whereas before um iowa had its best attribute or best unique attribute in the zone scheme taken away from it legislatively because of no more cut blocking and the the opponents were just beating them to where they thought the ball was going to go because that's where it always goes well in this case that with motion and even and with some more zone reads that are I mean some more jet sweeps and jet sweep action to it, it forces that conflict at the second level, which means Caleb Johnson can get to the line of scrimmage without facing another colored jersey.
Starting point is 00:15:15 And if he can do that and hit the hole, he's got an opportunity to do a lot of really good things there with a head of steam because he has a big physical back he's got great speed and and now he's he's learning how to run with the ball a little bit better you know inflict pain at the end of the runs i think those are the things that i see from him that are going to make him so much better even with the line is not full of superstars the thing that they're getting with this Trent is that by, by the second level being held a little bit longer in conflict by the motion that they can get to their spots quicker too. And,
Starting point is 00:15:57 and that allows them to block instead of kind of being blocking almost like a quarter of a human being that they can get to a half to two thirds of a human being. And that's really going to change the dynamic of the running game and allow Caleb Johnson to do what he does well. I really enjoyed listening to Tim Lester. I get a kick out of him. I think he's a fun guy. I think he's a guy that understands what Iowa wants to do and what Kirk wants to do, but doing it a different way. He said something interesting I wanted to pick your brain on, though. He said he was talking about the run game. He said they still have some things to clean up on the back end.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Is that talking probably about the outside zone plays, something that is basically kind of ripped out of the playbook a year ago? Is that what he was talking about when he was talking about cleaning up some things on the back end? Yeah, there are a lot of different areas. I would say the back end could mean everything from the quarterback to the backside. And again, when you're running stretch and you're running out towards an area, you've got to figure out what are the guard, center, and tackle, even tight end on the backside? How are they going to be able to reach those blocks?
Starting point is 00:17:09 And that's something that every coach who runs zone worries about. And again, in the past, what I would do is just cut the person. And they could usually cut them without clipping them. But now pretty much everything's being called a clip, so you just can't do it anymore. So I think that's probably the cleanup. That's something that will take time. It just takes repetition. And we won't perfect it until probably October if you get there,
Starting point is 00:17:34 but you can try to get it almost all the way there in August. So a couple of injuries, or at least guys that weren't out there. Jamari Harris, no surprise, a guy that's had some injuries throughout the course of his career, not out there at the cornerback spot. Saw a lot of John Nestor and TJ Hall. And you know, it's so interesting. TJ Hall, he was the more highly regarded recruit coming out over Deshaun Lee, but he's been banged up himself throughout the course of his season. This is a guy with good size. Not many times Iowa beats in Washington and Michigan for a recruit out of California, and yet they did.
Starting point is 00:18:07 A healthy T.J. Hall along with Nestor. Kind of exciting the depth. It feels like they're building a cornerback. With a healthy Jamari Harris, they should have four cornerbacks that they feel really good about this year, and that includes Nestor, Hall, and Lee. I mean, Lee saw the most action of the three last year. Hall was the second teamer two years ago as a freshman,
Starting point is 00:18:29 and he registered it last year. And Nestor has been the one that's really taken the jump forward. A lot of comparisons, you know, Riley Moss has been the one that's really been bandied about the most. And he's also working kind of as that number two cash right now as well. So they do like the way that the depth is coming together. And that's really important. And hopefully, for Iowa's sake, that they all remain patient, even if one of them gets the start and the other two will be right there. Whether it's this year, I mean, playing special teams, playing sub packages,
Starting point is 00:19:04 you know, injuries. There's something that always happens. So I think that's what they really needed because traditionally we just kind of look and say, oh, they need to go in the portal and get somebody opposite, Jamari Harris. Well, if these three play the way they expect them to, then they have no reason to do that. There is still an opportunity to add to this roster. It's a scholarships crunch right now, though, for the Hawkeyes as they try to figure out exactly what it's going to look like,
Starting point is 00:19:32 who's going to be entering the portal. You'd anticipate there might be a name or two here, certainly this week as they have, what, eight days before the portal closes again after they wrap up spring football. But backup quarterback, wide receiver and defensive tackle. Would those be maybe the three positions you're looking at at minimum just for some depth pieces? I don't know that I would even look at defensive tackle right now. I mean, I think that there, you know, there are seven defensive linemen.
Starting point is 00:19:58 And I know that's something that, yeah, they could probably use somebody there. But I think that's a position you can build somebody towards. It's like, well, unless you have an injury, you know, I I think that's a position you can build somebody towards. It's like, well, unless you have an injury, I think if you feel like you have Y.A. Black, Aaron Graves, Jeremiah Pittman, and then just somebody else to eat up snaps, then I think you're okay. And that's a scholarship you don't want to really blow at that point. Maybe a Jeff Bowie comes through. He was playing a lot the other day. But I think when you look at that,
Starting point is 00:20:30 there's two positions that obviously need to be addressed. I think backup quarterback is number one, and you can probably two-blank it on that one because it's just, it's not a situation where you can win championships with right now at quarterback. If Cade McNamara is healthy, stays healthy through the course of the year, and can play up to his ability, then yes. But he hasn't been able to do that, so you don't want to rely on that. You never know what the worst can happen.
Starting point is 00:20:58 They do need a number two. I mean, their recruiting at that position has been atrocious, to say the least, over the last five or six years. And so I would expect them to hit the portal hard. Right now, their quarterback that they're eyeing isn't quite there yet. A few out there that they kind of are looking at, and they know who they are, but they're just kind of waiting. But once they get on the portal i would assume that they would you know go guns blazing because that's kind of what you know has been mentioned to me not specific names
Starting point is 00:21:30 but uh you know the money part of it for sure and then wide receiver they another wide receiver jacob bostic leaving was really hurtful for them because they had just that he was that guy that they thought um could be a rotational guy and they need an X, and they don't have one. So, you know, not that they'll have one, because it's hard to get them in the portal, but I also expect them to be creative like they did with the Southeast Polk Lightning, which is, you know, get them in, figure it out, you know, maybe through the collective
Starting point is 00:22:01 to make sure they stay on roster, and then move them to full scholarship maybe in the second semester. Borud, I probably called, I don't know, 15, maybe 20 of his games in high school. He is a road grader. He is just a huge man. His legs are, as a high school kid, about as big as I'd ever seen. And he's going to be a fun one. You know, rotational piece, we'll see scholarship-wise if something pops up for him.
Starting point is 00:22:24 But I know he was excited and talking to a few people in the sap community i'm really excited about the opportunity there and a lot of people he there's places that borut could have gone and got a scholarship instead he decided to walk on here and with hopes i'm sure i'm sure of earning one down the line yeah and that's that's what you got to do and that's what you can do in this era that's different than before because then you can go to your collective, and you don't want to do this throughout because it does kind of defeat its purpose in some ways, but be able to go to it and say, make sure he gets enough to where he can pay his tuition, rent, food, all that sort of thing, rent, food, all that sort of thing, and then move him over at semester,
Starting point is 00:23:10 which next year they'll have plenty of available scholarships. So, yeah, I think he's a perfect guy, as you said, Trent. I mean, right now they're number one and number two centers are both seniors, and he'll be very competitive in that situation. Maybe he's a first-teamer, maybe he's a second-teamer, but it doesn't matter. He'll have an opportunity to prove it. Doc, i can't let you go without asking about special teams and especially the new punter what'd you see from reese dakin um you know i thought early on when i was watching him warm up i'm like wow this guy's a lot like uh his predecessor because he was clubbing a bunch of punts and knocking them out at like the three or the five yard line
Starting point is 00:23:44 and it was really a big he was like wow this wow, this is, you know, they were dying right there. And then on the other direction with the wind at his back, he was soaring. It was, there was one that was like 70 some odd yards in the air. But, but, you know, that you just, it's hard to, coming off the Torrey Taylor high for the last four years, it's really hard to look at somebody else and say, yeah, they're going to be just as good because I think they'll be okay. But I'll tell you what, I was more impressed with Drew Stevens. He had a 56-yarder, and then he had a 51-yarder from the left hash.
Starting point is 00:24:18 So, you know, if he's got any residue from last year's benching late in the season, it's gone. He looks pretty good. We know that's going to be important with Iowa football. Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joining us. Doc, as always, appreciate your time. We'll talk to you again next Monday. What do you got coming up this week at The Athletic?
Starting point is 00:24:36 Well, we've got so far my story on Noah Shannon and the gambling situation should be out tomorrow, I think. Tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. And then I'm on full NFL draft duty, you know, the rest of the week. So a lot going on there. And then who knows, you know, got a new voice on the broadcasting team for football. So we might have to write something about that. No doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:25:01 As the word came down today that old podi ed podolak is going to be hanging it up at least as it pertains to doing the color commentary inside the games but still going to be doing some work in the pre-game and uh going to be also working with some podcasts with the university an end of an era and the only voice that i remember he's been there for 42 years i'm 44 uh that's the only voice that I certainly remember, and I know I'm not alone in that camp. Yeah, I think before him was Forrest Davishevsky. Wow. With Jim Zabel way back when.
Starting point is 00:25:32 And so, yeah, this is clearly an end of an era. You know, and for Dolph, he's going to be on the – it's not going to be a whole lot longer for him either. So it'll be interesting to see which direction they go. I mean, most people expect the former player and there are plenty of them. And I think there are a lot that the fans would resonate towards. So I'm anxious to see what,
Starting point is 00:25:53 what kind of direction they go here. Doc. Appreciate it. As always, we'll talk to you again next week. All right. Thanks, Trent.

Starting point is 00:27:52 Back with you one final time here on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Trent Condon, thanks for hanging out with us here today. Wrapping things up with a little baseball talk as the Iowa baseball team got not just a much-needed series victory against Rutgers over the weekend, they swept away the Scarlet Knights. And all of a sudden, this Iowa baseball team that a lot of people have left for dead, myself included, they put themselves in pretty good shape now, suddenly to not just qualify for the Big Ten tournament, potentially make a little bit of a run.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Hawkeyes now sit alone in fifth place in the conference and just a half game out from Nebraska and Purdue with a 9-6 record at this point in the season. Iowa also seen their RPI jump up pretty significantly here recently, up to 103 now. I think it was cratering down in the 120s. So moving up in the RPI numbers, those are good. Still likely not going to be able to do enough
Starting point is 00:28:43 unless they go absolutely crazy here over the final month of the regular season to qualify as that large team. The Big Ten, we know the Big Ten in baseball is not the same way, but pitching is finally starting to come around. At the beginning of the season, it was so much talk about the bullpen
Starting point is 00:28:59 and the issues that they had there. Feels like they're finding enough arms now that Rick Heller is confident with in the back end of some close games. They've been much better on that front, but Brody Breck was outstanding on Sunday. They've changed around the rotation. Marcus Morgan showed at least some signs of improvement after a really disappointing stretch from him. Just overall, definitely necessary and puts himself up for a chance to make a little bit of a run here and put themselves in consideration now of the remaining series
Starting point is 00:29:29 left in the big 10 it's nebraska on the road coming up this weekend nebraska with the best rpi in the big 10 at number 19 in the country they get northwestern after that very winnable northwestern's terrible and then they wrap up at Illinois who's also playing some really really good baseball including with Brock Harding's older brother on that Illinois baseball team. Opportunities there, make a run and we've seen this team play very well over in Omaha good though, good feelings in the springtime we need this out of the Iowa baseball team
