Starting point is 00:00:58 of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV. Visit FanDuel.com to get started. Well, final look back at the week that was after Iowa picks up win number two of the season as they run past Troy on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. Got the numbers from Pro Football Focus and a look back at the game. A couple of notes before we get into some of the numbers.
Starting point is 00:01:21 So on the rewatch of the game, as I do usually on Sunday evenings or Monday nights, going back and taking one final look at the previous game and go through each and every snap. We talked about, obviously, the quarterback position, the most important sport position that is out there. And one thing that we talked about is Kate McNamara was solid. He was fine. He was okay.
Starting point is 00:01:43 He kept the train running on time. You know, going back, and there were misses. There were misthrows, as we've talked about, that went up the seam to Lachey. Was he the first option? Maybe not, but he was there, and didn't see him, didn't get it there. A couple of the passes, one to Jacob Gill that he had to lay out and make a play, another one to Lachey that he had to kind of step back. There were throws that were perfect, but they were good enough. And some of the Cade McNamara hate, I think is going a little bit too far. McNamara, I think still has more upside to get to working his way back from the ACL tear and before the quad injury and the other knee injury that he had. This is still a guy that is working his way back.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Arm strength? I don't know. But with what they're doing right now, do they have to take more shots down the field? I think it's going to start this week against Minnesota. There's going to have to be some plays made up the field if I was going to find a way to get this victory. We'll get into that more as the week goes on. But going back and watching it now a second time, I was a little bit down on Cade McNamara. He has to get better, there's no doubt.
Starting point is 00:02:49 It wasn't quite as bad as I thought initially. Yes, the numbers look very good, completion percentage high, all those things. It wasn't quite as bad though as I initially thought. All right, let's get into the numbers though and let's start at the quarterback position. Cade McNamara placed 60 snaps in the game. Brendan Sullivan came in nine. We talked about him in the goal line package. And what we're going to see a little bit more potentially about that, we'll get to Kirk Ferentz's conversation about that a little bit earlier today.
Starting point is 00:03:18 And I'll bring you that quote as well. But when you look at the numbers from Pro Football Focus and their grading scale for this game, the way that they graded this out for the Hawkeye offense and the quarterback spot, starting with this. Cade McNamara, solid, 19-23, 176. We talked about that. The actual grade, though, is a 73.1. Good for what we've seen recently, past grade at a 75.
Starting point is 00:03:41 That's very solid. And if Iowa gets that kind of play, they're going to be in good shape this year. Brendan Sullivan though was higher and 80.9 overall. Again, in those limited reps that he got, we go to the running back position and this one, it was a monster. We know about the huge performance from Caleb Johnson, the leading rusher in college football after 173 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the game. But Caleb, sorry, you are not the top graded running back in this one. It was Jazzy on Patterson. He came in, had the long run, a 94 grade, just an absolute ridiculous number for Jazzy and Patterson.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Great to see him out there. Fallen out of favor. Suspended for the first game as well. Comes back, didn't see any action against Iowa State. No surprise with the way Caleb Johnson was playing. Now he's out there, and he's out there in a way because of necessity. Kamari Milton got banged up. LaShawn Williams banged up. He's going to be out, it appears, this week. So you got a couple of banged up running backs. You got to go somewhere else, and you go to Patterson. I mean, that's your number four. You're really, really good shape.
Starting point is 00:04:47 And you go that one-two punch. I really like kind of the different dimensions that both of those guys bring with Patterson and with Caleb Johnson in the backfield. And I think it's going to be fun. How about this? 9.6 yards per carry for the Iowa running backs. Let's go to the wide receiver position. Your top ranked wide out was Kata Weegean, a 92.3. Caleb Brown, second on the team with a 79.6. Jerabui, 30 on that nice catch on
Starting point is 00:05:12 the sideline, a 66.7 for him. Jacob Gill, a surprising 64.7 by Jacob Gill. I anticipated that number was going to be higher for him in this one. Dayton Howard was also out there. He had a 55, as did TJ Washington Jr. And Reese Van Der Zee all the way down at a 47.3 overall for Van Der Zee. Got off to that great start, obviously, but things have gone the other way. Snap counts at the wide receiver position. Jacob Gill leads the way at 45. Reese Van Der Zee with 44.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Bowie with 24. Howard with 23. That was a surprise. 11 for Terrell Washington Jr. Just seven snaps for Caleb Brown. That number needs to go up, and one snap for Caden Weegeen. And of course, he had a reception on that one of the big crossers. So need to see more Caleb Brown. Need to get him more acclimated. Reese Van Der Zee, if the numbers continue like we've seen this week, Caleb Brown needs to be out there. Needs to be out there more than seven snaps in a football game. I don't think there's any doubt. And as we work your way out of the suspension in game number one, working your way back into the good graces, have to have that playmaker out there. You got to do the right
Starting point is 00:06:19 things. And we talked about this with Caleb Johnson. We've talked about this with other guys. You have to be doing everything necessary to get completely back. Let's hope that Caleb Brown is doing just that. We continue here in the grades from pro football. Focus on the offensive side of the football. Jump over the tight end position. Quick note on this one, the tight end position. Has the blocking been off at that position for you guys now the run blocking blocking grade excuse me easy for me to say um well in fact both were not very good in this one luke lachey a 52.2 run block grade just a 61.9 overall addison a strangle even lower than that of 46.4 something just seems a little bit off with the blocking and just what we've grown and grown accustomed to and
Starting point is 00:07:04 if i was going to go a lot of 12 personnel, one running back, two tight ends out there, have to have those tight ends blocked at a higher clip than we've seen this season. And then the offensive line. This is one that's maybe the most intriguing for me because grading offensive line as you're watching a football game is incredibly difficult. I don't know enough about grading offensive
Starting point is 00:07:25 linemen to come up with something. We like to do this because we see if it kind of marries with what our eyes are seeing when we're watching these football games. So Connor Colby is the top graded at a 74.6. A run block grade, a really high one. In fact, the highest on the team at nearly a 75. Jennings Dunker, a 69.1, followed by Cade Pieper, Mason Richmond, next up on the list with a 64. 63 for Nick DeYoung, played quite a bit. Tyler Ellsbury came in late in the game. Something about Tyler Ellsbury,
Starting point is 00:07:54 I just, I like the way the offense clicks when he's in there. Bo Stevens with a 54.5, and then Logan Jones all the way at the bottom with a 49.4. I know Logan Jones is an incredible athlete. I know that his measurables will be through the roof once we get to the NFL Combine. But as a blocker, as a center, boy, there just seems to be,
Starting point is 00:08:16 for every great play that you see, and his ability to get to the second level and use the athleticism that he has at his side. Those are great. There are just too many misses inside. Snap numbers. Both Stevens and Mason Richmond, both of those guys played all 69 snaps. Colby was next with 64, as did Logan Jones. Jennings Dunker, 52. Nick DeYoung was 17. At this point, are we looking at a rotation here? Not exactly sure how that's playing out. And then Pieper and Ellsbury came in late. Seven for Pieper and Ellsbury with five. So that's what you got up front and those numbers on the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:08:52 Mention the quarterback spot and the potential for Iowa to be doing something a little bit different. We'll talk about that as we continue here. Locked on Hawkeyes. Kirk Ferentz had something to say about integrating Brendan Sullivan into the game plan more going forward after the red zone offense look good after the disaster against Iowa State. We'll get into that plus Scott Dockerman
Starting point is 00:09:13 from The Athletic. He will join us as we continue. This is the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Get off the sidelines and into the NIL game with Roy. Trent Conant back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. So Kirk Ferentz met with the media earlier today. And after the press conference, a couple of interesting quotes in there. He was having a little bit of fun. He was talking about a question came up about Hayden Fry wearing the bib overalls and the straw hat.
Starting point is 00:11:32 No, no, Kirk said, no, I don't have any bib overalls or a straw hat. So we're not going to see that as he was poking fun a little bit of our neighbors to the north, poking fun at us. And well, Hayden, different personality type, certainly, than Kirk. But I thought maybe the most interesting element to the press conference from today was this. The question came up about Brendan Sullivan coming in. Is it something that you're going to do that more?
Starting point is 00:11:58 Use him maybe on fourth down, those kind of things. Kirk said this, quote, We'll see. Right now, we haven't given a lot of thought, but we'll see. Just happy to get him involved. He's practiced well, done some good things, certainly gives us a little different dimension. Those are things we might consider as we move forward. Don't love it. And maybe he's playing coy. Maybe there's something that they're thinking about. Those short yardage situations, third ones, fourth ones, those kind of things.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I certainly hope that that is going to be the case because, well, it's a guy that adds something different. And Iowa certainly needs that. An interesting quote today from Kirk Ferentz as we get ready for the matchup against Minnesota. Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joining us as we talk a little Hawkeye football with Doc on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Doc, let's get into the Hawks a little bit. As you were watching a little of everything, had to be weird not being at Kinnick Stadium for you as you were sitting there in the Iowa City corridor.
Starting point is 00:12:59 But some good, some bad, some ugly. Just your main takeaway from this one because there was warts on this one ultimately it's a win as they pull away in the second half your takeaways from Saturday I think uh it gives if you look at it in the broad perspective I think it's going to do more help than harm for this season because it provides again, yet again, the defense with some teachable situations and they're going to need to apply those, you know, possibly this week, but certainly at Ohio state. And that is, you know, allowing probably your most inexperienced defenders in the back one-on-one
Starting point is 00:13:37 with elite speed, you know, multiple times. That's something that they've got to figure out. And because if you do that with jeremiah smith or amika buka at ohio state you're going to suffer the same fate oh you know so they've got some things to worry about or you know fix now i think they're fixable i do i think that they're good enough defensively to erase those mistakes and get better from it, but they're going to also have to do that, and that's going to include more than ranting from Phil Parker. Offensively, they kind of stubbed their own toes a couple of times,
Starting point is 00:14:14 I thought, in the first half, but overall the numbers speak well for Caden McNamara, 19-23. He can't get much better than that, and I think the running game right now is operating at a really high level. So you'd like to see them convert on that fourth and one. That's something that you need to look back at and work on and figure out how to make it happen. But overall, I saw there was a lot of angst, a lot of message boards,
Starting point is 00:14:41 people freaking out that, you know, Kirk's era is over and all that stuff. I think let's give it some time. This team always gets better and they've got some stuff to work on. And I think they can get better at where I know we're only three games into the season, but I do think that this is Caleb Johnson, Caleb, thank you for Caleb Johnson. Yeah. Caleb Johnson's last year at, at Iowa, where will he rank, Doc? Like a Sean Green and a Betts and a Lewis. Who else on that?
Starting point is 00:15:09 Wadley, probably. Where does Caleb Johnson fit in under running backs that played for Kirk Ferentz at Iowa? You know, come back to me after they play, you know, some more games. I mean, so far he's had an amazing first three games. Let's see what he does against Ohio State, against Nebraska, against Wisconsin, and then, you know, on and on. But thus far, he's put himself into that conversation of being, you know, in that next tier. I mean, I think Sean Green had the best, by far, season, you know, maybe next tier I mean I think Sean Green had the best by far season you know maybe in big and maybe in Iowa history but and he was so good that it's really hard to overlook that
Starting point is 00:15:52 after him you know Liddell had a great career Tyler Goodson was the first team all-time 10 running back you know he was he was really good and and then there was a lot of injuries through the years. So, you know, I, I would put him not quite in the, the bets and good scenario right now. I would definitely not put them at Sean green, but let's you know, if he has a couple more games like he's had, and if he can do some damage against the heavyweights, then, you know, I certainly think he's capable of getting to that near Sean Green territory.
Starting point is 00:16:26 And what he's shown thus far has been nothing short of fantastic. Well, speaking of heavyweights, big offensive line as always in Minnesota. That's what Phil Fleck has built up there. Tough games throughout the years. Minnesota finally got one a year ago. What do you expect to see on Saturday? Are you going to make the trek north and be back in this press box for an Hawkeye game this week? Yeah, I'm going because I think it's a big game for both teams
Starting point is 00:16:49 you know uh you know they're two and one they've had two straight shutouts uh they've played low level competition so you read into it what you will but uh this is a team that's got a you know equally outstanding running back and Darius Taylor and a great wide receiver in Daniel Jackson and a question market quarterback in Max Brosmer, who's had a really good career at New Hampshire, and I think he's still just kind of trying to peel things out. They've got a big offensive line. I'm not sure how good it is.
Starting point is 00:17:21 And the first game against North Carolina was suspect, but sometimes teams are that way right off the bat. I think defensively they're decent. I don't know. I think the numbers kind of are skewed by the competition. I think this is a capable team of giving Iowa problems, but I also think Iowa is a better team. So in some ways, like last year,
Starting point is 00:17:42 if Iowa plays itself into some problems, it could be a close game. But I also think if Iowa plays at a high level, doesn't turn over the ball, doesn't give up any big plays, that Iowa is probably a two-touchdown better team. Has Iowa found their number one receiver in Jacob Gill? Does it feel like that to you? Yeah. I mean, I know at week one we were like, is reese vanderzee uh but i do think bill is the guy right now who's making clutch catches and uh he's when he's targeted he catches the ball and i think that's that goes a long way so yes i think he is their number one and i think reese vanderzee
Starting point is 00:18:18 is still in that category but you know he's still a true freshman he's still trying to learn things it came really easy in week one. He's discovering that it's not going to be always that easy. Scott Dockerman from The Athletic. We'll get you out on this. Doc mentioned special teams and the punt. It was a line driver. Coverage unit wasn't very good.
Starting point is 00:18:38 A one-off or a little bit of concerns, at least with the punting unit. It's not Torrey Taylor. We know it's going to be different here. Is it a concern at all for you and just iowa trying to win you know those little ways that they do just not having the same kind of punt team that they've had in the past um you know nobody's tory taylor as we saw even last night um you know so reese dakin's got some room to grow there was a there with a low line drive punt to somebody who's electric fast. Kind of reminds me of Amir Smith-Marset and what he can do.
Starting point is 00:19:11 So it's a lot to us. But I also think that, again, kind of like with the defense, in this case, singularly, I'm not concerned. I think it's a teachable moment for LeVar Woods. Here's what you've got to do. We've told you this before. You're not listening. We've got to do this and do this better.
Starting point is 00:19:31 However, if it happens again, whether it's this week or against Ohio State, then it becomes a little more of a concern. So right now, both with defense and with special teams, it's like teachable moments happens again, or a third straight week in the defense's case, then it becomes more of a red flag. So I'm still not overly concerned, but I do think that, hey, that's what they're getting paid for. Their teachers didn't cost them a win here,
Starting point is 00:19:58 but it's something that they could really hammer the points down this week when they open Big Ten play. Can't wait. Scott Ackerman joining us here as we talk little Hawkeye football with Doc. Always enjoy conversations with Scott Dockerman from The Athletic. We continue. Time to get into the defense. We take a look at the grades from the win against Troy there, and we get ready for the matchup.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Our first look at the Gophers as we dive a little bit deeper. That's as we continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Well, you've heard us talk a lot about FanDuel. Starting point is 00:21:08 with a three-week free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV. Of course, looking here, coming up this weekend with Iowa matching up against Minnesota. Iowa is currently a slight favorite in the game over at FanDuel. The Hawkeyes are currently, as I scroll back to my right spot here on my FanDuel app, got it downloaded and ready to go. The Hawkeyes are currently a 2.5 point favorite in the game. The over-under sits at 36.5 on the money line. Iowa minus 134 to get the victory.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Gophers plus 112 on the money line. You can bet on that and a whole lot more at FanDuel. It's America's number one sportsbook. Again, just visit FanDuel.com to download America's number one sportsbook. That's FanDuel.com. Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. As always, time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast as always thanks for
Starting point is 00:22:07 making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day all right we've talked about the offense let's get into the defensive grades from pro football focus and what we saw in the win Saturday one of the biggest ones is the depth that continues to build on the defensive line and certainly the numbers bear that out. Max Llewellyn, your top-ranked defensive lineman with a 76th grade from Pro Football Focus, followed up by Ethan Herkig. Brian Allen, great game from Brian Allen.
Starting point is 00:22:36 That consistency is continuing to grow for him. A 71.7 and had a couple of big plays in there. Y.A. Black doing Y.A. Black things, occupying space, being the man in the middle, slowing things down. He grades out with a 69. The tackle grade, not the highest, just a 34 in that one. Aaron Graves, a 64, a very solid out of him. Deontay Craig, a 61 and a half, though I did like, you saw some of those third and long
Starting point is 00:23:01 situations where Iowa went out there. It was Llewellyn, Hercut, Allen, and Craig all on the field at the same time. You had Craig lined up inside, kind of like that look to it. And then Jeremiah Pittman, the other defensive lineman, who is the rotational piece inside at defensive tackle. They definitely need him. In terms of snaps, both Allen and Llewellyn played 16 snaps in the game and 17 out of Pittman.
Starting point is 00:23:25 So it's a solid seven right now. That's good. Needs to stay that way. Need this group certainly to play, stay healthy. Defensively at the linebacker spot, Jay Higgins, 49 snaps. Nick Jackson with 41. 22 for Kyler Fisher, but that was it out of the linebacker. Just three played.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Of course, when they go 4-3, we know that Fisher is the one that comes into the game as it grades out at the linebacker spot. Jay Higgins, your top ranked at a 78.2. Kyler Fisher next, and then Nick Jackson at a 60. Nick Jackson, a little bit of a slow start again this year, but boy, had a couple of great blocks in the return for a touchdown by Jamari Harris. Let's get into the defensive backfield. And there is Jamari Harris after the pick six in the game. And just a great game overall. A 91.2 coverage game.
Starting point is 00:24:13 A grade the best out of the bunch with a 91 in that one. Run defense very good. Tackle grade very good. A great game overall across the board for Jamari Harris. He's joined next by Sebastian Castro with the 75. Good bounce back game for Xavier Wampa, though a little bit more of a rotation continuing at his safety spot with both him and Coyne Entringer. Deshaun Lee came into the game after the second long touchdown that was given up. He came in and then split reps after that with him and TJ Hall.
Starting point is 00:24:42 TJ Hall, no surprise, he's at the bottom of the list, giving up the long touchdown, and it sounds like one of those was his fault. The first one, the second one was on Quinn Schulte, who was just above him with a 54. That's what you get at the defensive back position. Snap count. Snap count, great, come on.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Snap count. 49, excuse me, for both Castro and Schulte as they played all 49 defensive snaps. TJ Hall, 43 snaps, just six snaps. He wasn't out there. Jamari Harris with 39. Wampa with 21. Deshaun Lee played 16. And then Cohen Entringer with 14. That's what we got in that one overall. Special teams, we talked about the disaster on the punt return. Coverage unit was brutal. The punt was awful. It was just bad. Teachable moment. All good. As Scott Dockerman told us, I think that's a really good point on that one. This didn't happen in a tight game like it would this week against Minnesota or one
Starting point is 00:25:34 against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State, Washington down the line, something like that. You get away with it against Troy, but don't let it happen again. And I have a feeling LeVar Woods is saying just that. Well, it is my favorite rivalry game on the calendar. The best rivalry trophy in college football, Floyd of Rosedale. I grew up in North Iowa, right next to the Minnesota border, on the good side of the border, of course. And I'll tell you, family, friends, live up in Minneapolis. Just, it's great.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Seen so many great games up there. Seen some disappointing ones as well. I've been on both sides, certainly of the coin, but it's such a fun trip. I know there's going to be a ton of Hawkeye fans in attendance. That's always great going to road games and being with a bunch of your brethren. Have some grain belts, have a good time.
Starting point is 00:26:21 I just love this game. I love this week. I love the just hatred that I have for Phil Fleck. I mean, that's what makes a rivalry what it is. And definitely have that for that guy. He's a piece of work. We'll just put it that way. Love this game.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Excited for this game. Going to be really pumped up for it. And we'll start to talk about the game. The matchup a little bit more. Iowa out for revenge. Is there a little bit of a chip on their shoulder after the way things went down a week ago? I know a lot of questions today at the press conference about Cooper DeGene and the fair catch signal
Starting point is 00:26:54 from a year ago in the loss to Minnesota. Of course, Kirk Ferentz in typical Kirk Ferentz fashion. He went all the way back to 1981 and brought up a game that way. So that's what you get with a Kirk Ferentz press conference, but looking forward to this one. And again, we'll break it down a little bit more and coming up tomorrow on lockdown Hawkeyes.
Starting point is 00:27:13 We got a special tree. We're bringing them out of the bullpen. Once again, it's time to bring in biz. Biz will be here talking all things. Hawkeyes ever brought him in at all this football season, bad workout of me, blame me, just terrible work and still working on a few other things as well as a here talking all things Hawkeyes. Haven't brought him in at all this football season. Bad work out of me. Blame me.
