Earlier today, we heard from Phil Parker, the Iowa defensive coordinator. He was not available last week during Iowa Football Media Day. And because of that, well, he got his own special meet and greet with the media over in Iowa City. Now, Phil Parker, he's a little gruff. He's a little rough.
Starting point is 00:01:23 He is a tough guy, no doubt about it. We're going to talk a little bit about his comments and him battling injury throughout the course of the season, some injuries, and some names to keep an eye on for this Iowa defense that's going to be good once again. Also, Scott Dockerman from The Athletic, a conversation with Doc about what he's seeing at the quarterback position, what he's hearing, a little talk on wide receivers,
Starting point is 00:01:43 and a little bit more with Scott Dockerman from The Athletic. Plus, Iowa football recruiting already looking towards the future and a potential impact class down the line for Iowa football. We'll talk about that here today as well. Let's get into it and start with Phil Parker. So as we talked about a week ago, he was out there at practice, but he had surgery last week. And because of that, wasn't out there for football media days. He bounced back out yesterday, today, excuse me. And so we see Phil Parker and he's going to have his arm in a sling. He got rolled up on a practice.
Starting point is 00:02:16 He said, just took a little bump. And that's just the standard nature you're going to get from Phil Parker, right? He is a guy that kind of has that old gr grumpy exterior, tough guy, but you also see the way that the players play for him and the emotion that you see from this group and what people say playing for Phil Parker. And I know for us older people, we love Norm Parker and what he did. Norm Parker, and you talk to the players, talk about beloved. I mean, Norm Parker took it to a completely different level.
Starting point is 00:02:44 But in the ever-changing landscape of college football, what Phil Parker has been able to do with this defense and the circumstances that he has been given with the ineptitude of the Iowa offense over the last two and a half years, these have been circumstances that most programs, most coaches wouldn't be able to battle through. He has been able to, and he's been able to do it in a big-time way. You see a guy that has absolutely no doubt about it, been able to break through and not just take this defense and continue at a high level. They're playing at an even higher level.
Starting point is 00:03:15 And you look at the numbers that Iowa's put up here recently. You talk about what they are total defense over the last, what, six seasons. 2018 to 2023. over the last, what, six seasons. 2018 to 2023. 7th, 12th, 8th, 16th, 2nd, and 7th a year ago. Yards per rush, an important component, obviously. Also what they do up front, stopping the run.
Starting point is 00:03:35 That is paramount. That's where things start with the Phil Parker defense. And it's most everybody's defense is going to go this way. Against the run, 10th in the country, 23rd, 5th, 8th, 2nd, and 10th a year ago. Now you return two defensive tackles that can be big-time impact guys and really a combination of players that are about as big as I was had for a starting defensive tackle tandem
Starting point is 00:03:57 in a really long time. You have Aaron Graves listed at 6'4", 300 pounds, athleticism. He has that definitely to go with that big frame. And then Y.A. Black, just a behemoth of a man, 6'5", 320 pounds. But the thing about both of these guys is they can move. They're not just your standard old school nose tackle. That's just a big guy eating up space. And though that's what defensive tackles are asked to do in the defensive scheme, these guys also have the athleticism to go along with it.
Starting point is 00:04:25 You look at last year, you had Logan Lee, a guy that built himself up, but certainly for defensive tackle standards, not the biggest guy. You go back to the two years previous, it was Logan Lee and Shannon. Oh, Shannon were the starters for the starter at defensive tackle position.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Shannon, again, not the biggest guy. Jack Heflin, along with Davion Nixon in 2020. Cedric Lattimore, he was Brady Reif, not so much in 2019. Sam Brinks, Matt Nelson. And we're talking about not a tandem that is certainly built like these two guys. And with this defense and the way that they do things,
Starting point is 00:04:56 that is a great place to start what they're going to be able to do up front this season. Bill Parker has this defense humming along. And they go through and you go to any practice. You hear players talk about it. Time is boring. It is the same things, the same drills over and over again. You heard why a black in the mic up a conversation we talked about on yesterday's program, just about that going through the same things, the same repetition, but that's what puts them in a position year in and year out
Starting point is 00:05:25 doing those simple little drills and just becoming great at those little things. It is so important for what Iowa does. You know, our concerns coming into this season was the depth of that defensive line. Jeremiah Pittman, it does sound like he has solidified himself as the number three guy. You know, and another big part about this is we've continued to hear throughout August camp about Jeff Bowie, the guy that has been banged up a whole lot in his career. Eastern Iowa kid. He has been out there and he's just battled injury. Well, finally healthy.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And if he can be a rotational piece that can make them four deep with defensive tackle, that's going to be huge for this team. And then you look at what they have outside and the ability to get to the quarterback. Is that going to be a big season coming up this year? Are we going to see 45 Deontay Craig step up like he did two seasons ago? What kind of production are they going to get out there? Does it finally happen for Brian Allen? I think you're certainly going to see more of him this season. It's exciting up front. We know the linebacker crew and especially the one-two punch of Nick Jackson and Jay Higgins is as good as anybody has in college football for a starting two linebackers. I don't think there's many better.
Starting point is 00:06:29 You throw in a cash position with Sebastian Castro. That's something right there. That is something that is absolutely eye-opening what they're going to be able to do. And then their offensive backfield and talked about this yesterday too with Phil Parker. You know, he talked about John Nestor and it was funny because it's Phil Parker and just the way that he deadpans things is he was it was dangled out there for him maybe to show a little bit of praise to Jon Nestor and the comparison to Cooper to Gene. He didn't want to go there. He said, well, they're both cornerbacks. And yes, very deadpan and very good stuff out of Parker on that front.
Starting point is 00:07:01 And you get that because that's another part of Phil Parker. You do not see him very often sing praise until a guy is well down the line and certainly has proven it on the front. And you get that because that's another part of Phil Parker. You do not see him very often sing praise until a guy's well down the line and certainly has proven it on the field. Jon Nestor continues to pop. TJ Hall, Deshaun Lee. He said he has an idea of who the starter is going to be. But amongst those three, you've got three guys
Starting point is 00:07:17 that have all proven at this point to be able to play in the Big Ten and all three of those guys with a lot of upside, you believe, going forward. And then you got Jabari Harris coming back for another year. The concerning part still remains for me, Xavier Wampum. He's back. Phil Parker mentioned today that he was hoped
Starting point is 00:07:34 that he was going to be on the practice field today. Didn't happen, but he is very close. And he's going to be close to being able to go. Doesn't sound like there's anything that's going to be holding him out week one. But again, he's just banged up. And as we talked about last season with the injuries that he sustained, what he had to play through, the shoulder injury last season, you just need to have him healthy because he is a big-time impact player
Starting point is 00:07:53 on the backside of that defense. This has a chance to be the best Iowa defense. And a component to that is also what they've been able to do, the continued building that they have, all the returning guys, the production that is coming back, coupled with depth that is continuing to grow, depth at the linebacker spot, depth at the cornerback spot. Hopefully, some depth on that defensive line.
Starting point is 00:08:14 You're feeling really good about all those components. Another thing with Xavier Wampus' injury, Zach Luttmer has been able to practice more. He's been able to get more reps. And with it, you'd anticipate potentially this is going to be leading to them just a to practice more. He's been able to get more reps. And with it, you'd anticipate potentially this is going to be leading to them just a little bit more. But my most exciting part
Starting point is 00:08:28 about what Phil Parker said, something that I've been talking about since going back last winter, I'm sure you're probably sick of me. I think it's a theory that is spot on. I've been talking about it all the time, every day, as you know it. And this is it.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Iowa's offense stunk so bad over the last couple of seasons. Teams just went into a shell. They were not going to do anything. They were not going to push the envelope knowing how good the Iowa defense was because if we have to punt the ball back to the Iowa offense, that's okay. They're not going to do anything. Hopefully that changes.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Tim Lester getting this offense going. Cade McNamara improving, shaking off the rust with the run game. Sounds like it's going to be taking a big step forward this year. More bodies, more opportunity at the wide receiver position. Is it going to be Jacob Gill, the Northwestern transfer? Is Weijin now have an opportunity to be a guy that can make those big-time plays and do more than just be a guy running jet sweeps? Give more of the offense to him. Caleb Brown, after the first game, he'll be back out there again. And we saw that depth may be improving at the wide receiver position. Gil's going to help out. And we know
Starting point is 00:09:32 the tight end position. I am optimistic that this thing's going to be figured out. Let's just get Gade McNamara figured out and we'll be good to go. Scott Dockerman from The Athletic. He's been on the Iowa beat for nearly 20 years. He is over at The Athletic covering the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Big Ten. A conversation with the Dock as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Today's episode of the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast is brought to you by Ibotta. Summertime, that means it's barbecue season. Scott Docterman with us, and let's begin the conversation here. Yosei Epinesa, he makes his commitment to Iowa.
Starting point is 00:12:05 It's a different time than when A.J. was going through recruiting four or five years back. It's a different era. We get that. But the importance of that and keeping when Iowa gets a prospect and they missed a recent one in Caden Proctor, those are the guys. And in order to sustain what Iowa's built, you got to keep those guys around. Well, of course. And, you know, Iowa and Iowa iowa state too but iowa does
Starting point is 00:12:26 such a great job of of developing their players to compete well you know completed a high level in the big ten and then eventually on to the pros but but you do need a few superstars here and there at some key positions and making sure you can get a jose epineza after you had aj and and uh is really pivotal and i think if you can sprinkle in some of those and they've done a nice job of making sure a lot of those guys hit, um, you know, and then being able to pick up your guy from, to take your pick from whatever small town in Iowa, the supplemented that guard or defensive tackle or a linebacker. Um, but you know, that's how you win games. And I think we saw late inJ.'s career how he was able to take over.
Starting point is 00:13:09 I believe he had something like eight of his 11 sacks were in November or the bowl game was last year. I think that's kind of what you're hoping for to get. You'll say, based on Iowa guys that are probably going to be either in NFL training camps or draft picks next year, they'll have a shot to play right away, just the way A.J. did. Doc, did you get any intel from Iowa scrimmage over the weekend? Apparently another mixed bag for the quarterbacks, although apparently not as bad as it was
Starting point is 00:13:41 when you guys and the kids' day and the media was let in to watch the practice that day. Any intel on this scrimmage that took place over the weekend? A little bit, and that is that quarterbacks seem to be progressing, but they're not progressing as fast as the rest of the team around them. And I think this is the position that they're kind of in because when you look first at Cade McNamara, a guy who, you know, is coming off an ACL, who didn't have a chance to go through spring football. It's a new system. It's different from anything he's ever really run before.
Starting point is 00:14:15 I know he had some splinters or something like that with Michigan within the system, but I don't think it's really the same. So, you know, he's trying to play catch up and he's struggling with his fundamentals. I thought that was the most concerning part of a week ago, Saturday. And then Brendan Sullivan just arrived on campus in June, and he's probably better equipped physically to run this type of offense based on his skillset. But, you know, is he good enough? I don't know. I mean, if he was better, he'd probably still be a Northwester. And I mean, they wouldn't have let him go or they'd try not to. And so I think that both of them, from what it
Starting point is 00:14:50 sounds like, have made progress, have gotten a little bit better, but still, they're not putting themselves in a position to where they're going to be the ones leading the team to whatever record. It's going to be everybody else around them, and then they're playing catch-up. And I think that's where they are right now, and it's still a competition kate is the one in the
Starting point is 00:15:08 driver's seat but uh you know i think they you know they still have at least one more week of solid practice but i don't i don't know time's running short on when they're going to make you know and make it official probably that came back to maryland that'd be the starter with that we know caleb brown at least anticipated to be the number one he won't be there for the first game of the season out of the wide receivers and not giving you tight ends or even passes to the backfield under running backs who is second in terms of catches the wide receiver if brown is first oh boy um i it's tough because that is the one group where I really, I don't have a great feel for who may end up being number one, two, five, six, eight, you know, it's just really, you don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:52 And, and I know Jacob Gill was somebody when talking to some of the, the linemen that they were all in on, I mean, Mason Richmond's like, that's my guy. And the way he blocks, I mean, that obviously is going to be something that gets him on the field. But, you know, I kind of, if I were to lean on anybody right now, I'd probably go with Caden Dejan. He's the guy that's been there the longest.
Starting point is 00:16:12 You know, he's probably a scholarship-level receiver on this team, and he's got some, you know, some incredible speed. So I think that he's probably somebody that you can legitimately say is going to be in a lot of games. Therefore, he'll have the opportunity to make wing passes, short routes. If you want to pick a younger guy that I think has an opportunity to see some action and make some plays, I think Reeves Van Der Zee is going to be that guy, you know, a true freshman X receiver tall does a lot of good things. I could see him get into the game and do it a couple of making a couple of plays, too.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So, you know, and Caleb Brown isn't necessarily safe or immune. I mean, he did come on late last year, but, you know, that's just like putting a little bit of salt on a pretzel when he eats dried cardboard pretzels for two years. So let's see what he can do when this offense gets a little bit better. Doc, I was all in on Caleb Johnson leading the team in rushing this year, and he very well still may. But apparently, there's a lot of folks out there that tap the brakes on that. Kamari Moulton is a guy that you need to pay attention to.
Starting point is 00:17:24 How does that shake out doc yeah i think it's going to still be you know kind of a little bit of what we saw last year where it's going to be a three-headed monster maybe four of that running back spot and it wouldn't surprise me at all if we get a situation where there's uh you know one week it's one guy one week it's the next guy because we you forgetting LaShawn Williams is still back. And he's still considered the starter. I think Caleb has an immense upside in so many different areas. But I really like Kamari Moulton, the way he ran and the way he looks.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Last year, I kept thinking when I first saw him after I think it was the Western Michigan game, he looked like an AAU point guard. He's a really small, young man. This year, he popped on about 25 to 30 pounds. You could see it in his lower body and his physicality. He's got great hips, great movements. He can really get into the hole and make guys miss. Great feet and explosiveness. So I think he's got a chance to really be a special player for Iowa.
Starting point is 00:18:30 And, you know, running back, we always got to have to, like, you know, brace ourselves when we say anything positive about the rooms because we're fearful of the airbag returning. But I do think that Iowa has about, you know, has really at least four quality players in the back uh found it interesting over the weekend i saw it pop up in my podcast feed the solid verbal national podcast two guys about my age enjoy listening to those guys they dedicated a full podcast to iowa football and it was about you were on it lucy rodent was also on
Starting point is 00:19:04 it just talking about something that feels like at times just a local story. This is national, how I was continue to win games throughout the years. Take us through. And I thought it was interesting. They asked you just covering this program and how it might be frustrating, but you said no, because it feels like you always have something to talk about being on the Iowa beat. Pretty fun one, even as the offense isn't exactly fun. Yeah yeah and I did that a little while ago so I wasn't even sure what it was if it ran or not and I guess you know they decided to do it this way but um you know I think part of it and one of the things I liked that talked about was it just like well you know what's it like
Starting point is 00:19:42 covering this bad offense and leave it at that? But, I mean, I think the holistic part of this program is really fascinating because, again, you know, to win and win the way they have. I mean, they're among the top 10, 12 programs in the country over an extended period of time that's won, you know, 10 games. You know, three times in the last five years, they've won 10 games. Three times in the last five years, they've won 10 games. They're a successful program nationally, but a lot of times the offense overshadows that a little bit. I like the fact that I was able to explain a little bit more in detail what this program is and how we cover it and why it isn't the bore that some people think it is. It's like, oh, they don't get five stars. Their offense stinks. Their coach stays forever.
Starting point is 00:20:30 They run the same stuff. But I think it's really interesting to me just how they stack up, and I like the chess match of it. Plus, personally, I'm a big fan of B-head football. I'll give you line of scrimmage football all day, and I'll take it. Doc, have you gone on record yet as how many teams and who the teams from the Big Ten that will qualify for the playoff? Have you done that exercise yet?
Starting point is 00:20:55 Well, Stu and I put together our final projections for the playoff, and I'll say this, that they're based off for his projections that I'm kind of massaging a few areas. And I think I would go four. I think he would go three, Big Ten team. You know, I'd probably go four from the SEC, and I think he'd go five. But I can't really reveal what his list would be until we actually publish it, which I think for tomorrow. Tomorrow, good.
Starting point is 00:21:23 would be until we actually publish it, which I think is for tomorrow. Tomorrow, a bit later. So, yeah, it's kind of our whole entire bowl projection, which is pretty fascinating because there's a lot of little changes and nuance around the postseason structure. That's for certain. What else you got coming up this week at the Athletic Doc? Yeah, on Thursday, I'm coming up with the 50 best games in modern Big Ten history.
Starting point is 00:21:46 This is just Big Ten versus Big Ten teams since 2000. So really beginning with the year of Drew Brees when he had some miraculous victories for the Purdue Boilermakers, going through some of the other games. I'll tell you what, Iowa is well-represented Wins and losses in this chart. I went through it. I tweaked it several times. That's what I've got coming out. I think Thursday is the day. It's not
Starting point is 00:22:13 non-conference games. It's just Big Ten versus Big Ten. I could probably have done 100, but I cut it to 50. That's what I've got planted so far this week. Did the 6-4 game against Penn State make it? I loved it. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:22:29 It's a unique score. And it's a pivotal game in a year where a team won a championship. And I think that's something that really stood out to me. It wasn't the top 10, but I think it was certainly a hallmark game, and I think people could point at it and go, yeah, that's the epitome of a Kirk Barrett
Starting point is 00:22:47 team. But when you look at some of the Iowa games, I mean, among the very best was Ohio State Iowa in 2009. I mean, you're talking about an overtime game. The last time ever a game was decided, a championship was decided between two combatants on the same field in Big Ten history. And the way that game went, that's very, very high on the list. It has to be.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Of course, at least three of the top five. So, yeah, it was really fascinating. I'm sure people will have disagreements, of course. That's the way it goes. Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joining us here. Locked on Hawkeyes. Top 100 list is out. And there's some Hawkeye potential flavor on it for the class of 2027. Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. As always, thanks for making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Well, a new list is out. It's for the class of 2027. If that makes you feel old, welcome to the club because boy, that just leaves me shaking my head. That aside though, the class of 2027, we are talking about prospects that have just completed their freshman year of high school and are getting ready to start their sophomore campaign. A lot of Hawkeye potential flavor
Starting point is 00:25:14 on the list. In fact, Iowa has offered six players in the class of 2027. Of those six, five of them show up on this top 100 list recruiting list. This is from on three. Now, the number three player on this list, it might be the longest shot, but there is potential. My son, Johnson Cook is his name. He's a two-way player, running back linebacker. And as you'd anticipate a guy at this level, he is absolutely a behemoth. Now he is transferred.
Starting point is 00:25:41 He was an Illinois kid from Decatur. He is now down in Texas. Going to make it even more difficult for Iowa to get his services. Iowa going after him. 6'2", 220 pounds. How his scholarship offers from Iowa, Illinois. How about this? Georgia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Penn State, Nebraska, Oregon.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Yeah, and a whole lot more to come. Myson Johnson Cook. We'll see if Iowa can stay involved. He has taken a visit, though, to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Next on the list, coming in at number 24 on the list, is Jax Dajin. That's right. Cooper Dajin's little brother is on this list in the top 25 player in the class of 2027. Does a little bit of everything.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Taller stature than Cooper. Already at 6' foot four 200 pounds wide receiver tight end defense whatever it may be well he's got the playmaking ability that certainly you anticipate 37 catches last year 500 yards and seven touchdowns also ran for over 100 yards and had four defense of interceptions a year ago i Iowa, K-State already after him, and you can anticipate he is going to have a bunch of offers. And a lot of those programs that decided not to offer Cooper DeGina a scholarship coming out of high school, they'll probably come in the way of Jacks. Next up on the list, an eight-man football player. That is Landon Bloom from Woodbine. He is another top 100 player, big already 6 575 pounds has offers from
Starting point is 00:27:06 iowa iowa state kansas state already georgia nebraska missouri some of the other teams that are involved with him he's made it to iowa's campus already and anticipates he's going to be there for the iowa iowa state game coming up here in a couple of weeks big time name and wide receivers that is always a good one and then we wrap up with a couple of weeks, big time name and wide receivers. That is always a good one. And then we wrap up with a couple of tight ends. First, Luke Brewer. And you look at his offer list, get from Norwalk, just south of us here in the Des Moines metro area, six, four, 210 pounds. And already going into his sophomore year, he has scholarship offers from Iowa state.
Starting point is 00:27:39 That's great. Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, K state. Absolutely ridiculous. No doubt about it. That is going to be what to keep an eye on. His older sister is a commit for the class of 2025 to Iowa softball. Let's make this a family tradition over in Iowa City. And finally, the last name on the list from South Dakota, Cooper Terwilliger.
Starting point is 00:28:00 He comes in at number 77 in the rankings. 19 catches last year, four touchdowns from him. Another one though, already with some big time offers. Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Georgia, K-State, Auburn, all with offers already. Just absolutely nuts and seeing what these young men are doing. Incredible. Looking forward to that.
