roof of the Hawkeye fans being gouged at the ticket office today. Locked on Hawkeye.

If you're listening on the audio side five star reviews I've
been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the great
state of Iowa including currently on the Iowa sports radio network we have
stations in Des Moines Sioux City Quad Cities Cedar Rapids Iowa City you can
catch me each weekday from noon to two talking a lot of Hawkeyes in the world
of sports.
Well, next week it'll be Las Vegas for me as I'll be there covering Big Ten Football
Media Days.
We'll let you know a little bit about some of the stories that I'm going to be chasing
next week and some of the intrigue on the Iowa football perspective.
We're going to be joined by Tom Kaikert.
We'll talk some football with Tom, some of the scheduling concerns for Iowa coming up this season and also get into some basketball
recruiting with Tom Kickert. But we begin today with football tickets and it's a
topic that I know does not hit everybody. Not every Hawkeye fan is able to make
their way to Kinnick Stadium for you season ticket holders. It's a different
conversation for you. But if you're amongst the many that looks for a few games every year, or maybe a single
game every year, that you're going to make your way to historic Kinnick Stadium to watch
the Hawkeyes.
Ticket prices continue to go up.
And this is not just an Iowa Hawkeye thing.
This is not something that only pertains to Iowa athletics.
This is something that is nationwide, as we've seen more and more ticket prices
increase. But at the collegiate level, it has been different.
And though Iowa has sold out the last couple of seasons and it's trending again
in that direction.
And if you do want to get tickets for this game through the ticket office,
do it sooner rather than later because a couple of games have already reached
sellout status. There are a couple of others that are incredibly close indiana's already sold out minnesota's already sold out
But the two big games on the schedule penn state and oregon
When the nittany lions and the ducks come to kinnock
Those two games are not sold out yet. They will get there. It's going to happen
But I think the reason it's pretty simple. It's the price
and It's going to happen, but I think the reason it's pretty simple. It's the price.
And if you did like I did and looking for a couple of extra tickets,
thought those would be maybe a game that my wife would be able to come to with me,
as that's not the case all the time.
So went there and was looking for extra
tickets and ran across that ticket price.
And it wasn't a shock because I knew that the prices have gone up, but it's still clicking on it for the first time And put two tickets in your cart
It was three hundred and eighty seven dollars
For two tickets and i'll tell you we were not sitting at the 50. That was not aware. We were clicking either
that
Was eye-opening. I also work in radio
Disposable income it's not through the roof by any means I do a podcast I work in radio. Disposable income, it's not through the roof by any means. I do a podcast, I work in radio.
So it's not like we're exactly swimming over here.
The sticker shock was real for me.
Even knowing going in it was going to be expensive
and doing the prices had gone up.
It just, you see it, I guess with your eyes
for the first time and in that cart.
And it raises things up in a big-time way and there is
a concern with this and you might be saying so what it's still gonna sell out
it's not that big of a deal but what's made Iowa athletics what it is and the
importance of the Hawkeyes in our state yes we still have a power four conference
team depending on your metrics or the way
that you look at Iowa State, they are still a Power Four conference team. They still get
60,000 people that go to their football games at home every single week. And when you're
trending in a direction where these ticket prices are getting exorbitant. You do worry about those fans that just are only able
to afford to make it to one game. And when that element starts to drift away, do you lose a portion
of the fan base? Do some people, new people to the state, people moving in, and I think about that a
lot here in Des Moines, is very transient. And with the insurance companies in town,
you have a lot of people that are moving here
that do not have Iowa roots.
And maybe they're making a choice.
You know, as I move here, what are we gonna root for?
The Hawkeyes or the Cyclones?
We're gonna go to a game.
It's a lot easier to make your way to Ames
than it is to make your way to Iowa City
when price is one of the main factors that you're looking at.
Coupled with the proximity, obviously the name says at least here in central
Iowa. So it's not a huge deal. Look, it's not that I'm freaking out about.
I understand this is the reality.
The other component I do want to bring up though is how quickly these ticker
prices have gone up is it feels like it's going hand in hand with what we're
seeing obviously in college athletics and the $20 million that is going to be paid through the university now to the players.
And I was going to be fully funding that about 75% of that is going to go to football as
it should.
But when you are coming up with this and seeing these ticket prices, I think it doesn't take
a real big leap to understand.
Well this has to be going hand
in hand because they're going to be looking for every single avenue that they can in order to bring
in money, to bring revenue in and ticket prices. Look, back in the day, that was it. Now, before TV
contracts are what they are today, before the money that was flowing in from the Big Ten Network
and from the Big Ten as a whole with those television partners
it was about what you did with the tickets and
Though that morphed back over the last two decades
Maybe we're coming back around where the importance of having people in the stands, but being able to do that and cost a lot
That's coming back to I
Think that's something that we're seeing become more and more of a factor for Iowa football
Like I said, I was gonna sell out even game one
They were very close to that the Albany game at five o'clock, which is still such an odd time to open up the season
Hopefully it's not incredibly hot that day
That's the game that I always take my kids to and so my wife and I bring the kids to that one
We made it to the third quarter the first two years.
Let's see if we can get to the fourth quarter of this season.
Let's hope that that's the case and we're able to make that happen.
But that aside.
Kenick stadium. It's still special. I know very well it's nerdy.
I get it. I'm a huge dork at times.
And you were every day or, you certainly know that.
But I still get the goosebumps when I walk in for that first game every single year.
And walking in and seeing the brick and having a couple of pops beforehand and walking into the
stadium, it still gets me. And those special moments that I have for somebody that's been going to games now for decades
1988 I think the first game that I went to is a long time ago as a youngster and
still walking in today and
still getting those feelings and
If you're pricing out a part of the population
What does that mean for the future?
if you're pricing out that kid
like me that got to go for the first time and experience it and you're taking
away that, just something to file away. Not a huge deal, but it is summer. We're
gonna be talking more about some summer plans coming up here as we're gonna be
talking about our trip out to Vegas. Tom Kaker is going to be there from Hawkeye
Report.com and Tom is gonna join us next.
We'll take a look at this Iowa basketball team
on the recruiting trail, what they're doing there,
both for the women's and the men's team.
And are there a couple of tricky spots
on this Iowa football schedule?
We'll talk about that with Tom Kaker
when we continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.

Tom cake or joins the program Hawkeye report dot com part of on 3 media before we do that stolen beef days going on who
Kristen works will not be in the hay bale toss this year I
got the word I got a text. This is really popular time if you
ever covered it.
Have not ever gone. Yeah, we. Worst had the, had this, uh,
me scoped or whatever. He's on the pop list. So he is do it. Um,
I don't think dunker's doing it. Uh, people told me he's doing it.
So I would put him as, uh, like minus 400.
Maybe we need some, maybe we need some odds on Beef Days.
I think we should. I'm all for it. That's outstanding, but pretty big event nonetheless
in Solon. Good for them. And I think it's the first mention of them on the, on KXNOMA,
Iowa Sports Radio Network. So get out there and have fun if you're in the area tonight
and tomorrow. Well, Tom, lots of ground to cover. Aside from
Soul and Beef days, media day on the precipice as we inch our way closer. I guess who's the team, Tom, that's on Iowa's schedule that maybe, I don't know, that you gave Iowa a win over them,
that you're starting to get some feedback or get some pushback that, uh, you know, don't overlook this or that or the other thing.
Who would that team be Tom?
I think the most fascinating game on the Iowa schedule is Indiana.
I think it's just because, because we just don't know, is this, you know, do they kind
of come turn back into Indiana or is this thing real? Is
Signeedi really the greatest coach since Newt Rockne or Nick Saban or whoever you
want to put him with? I mean coach Google me if I call it. You know he
does not lack for bravado. He's he's got a quarterback. He's got his, you know, got Mendoza.
So he's got some talent back.
I just think that's such a fascinating game early in the year and the conference because
it could honestly could set up either one of those teams to be in the conversation and
in late November for college football playoff. Excellent. Who would have had Indiana in the college football playoff?
No, nobody back to back years.
Yeah. Same, same group that picked Arizona state last in the big 12,
you know, nobody saw it coming.
Dummies in the media, dummies in the media. We don't know anything.
Not a thing guilty.
Speaking of the beginning of the big ten slate week one
It's Rutgers on the road short week after a night game against UMass
They got to go out there on a Friday night
Now I was dominated this series and some decent teams also that I was been able to beat any concerns though about that game
Any concerns about what she on was building or it might be a slog, but I will finds a way against Rutgers
I know that all the way against Rutgers.
I know that all the people at Rutgers will be all fired up because it's going to be a Friday night and their early season schedule suggests they'll be 3-0 and so everybody's going to be excited out there and you know, lathered up on a Friday night in
New Jersey having some fun but I just don't don't, I don't see a lot of,
a lot of hope there.
Is count Manus back?
Yes.
Yeah.
I think it's, I think I joked in my preview there, my, my, my field's
forecast, but it was like the, the 10th time that I was based in Kelly's
seems like a quarterback between Minnesota and Rutgers and probably not
that far off but yeah he's back but they don't have was the guy the guy who's
with the Bears now at the seventh round pick yeah he's gone and they think they've
got some receivers but lost a lot on defense yeah is what I was told. So I wonder. And the last time Iowa went up there
in a bank game, they handled them pretty well. I just think Phil Parker will dial up some defense
and create a couple of turnovers and it'll be like 27 to 10 or something like that.
Last year they lost in conference to Nebraska, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, and Illinois. Well,
they lost in conference to Nebraska, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, and Illinois.
Well, they lost, they lost to Illinois, but beat Michigan state, Minnesota, Maryland, and Washington.
So not the upper echelon of the conference, but still finished a seven
and six after a loss to K-State.
So I guess my point being is Shiano does have them seemingly headed in the
right direction, if nothing else.
What's the, I know your forecast has them lose in a couple of
games of the two more likely that you're wrong is, is gotta be, um, the heroes game, right?
The over in Lincoln against the brat.
Cause I can't see them beating Penn state.
I just can't.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I Penn state, this is going to be, going to be rough.
And, and, you know, I see it.
I want to tell me when it came on the West coast, it's not at a neutral site.
It's just hard for me to, I mean, I thought they would win last year against UCLA,
that UCLA team that wasn't any good.
And I tried to tell you guys, yeah, you did. You're right. You did.
Yeah. Trent did. Trent had that. Sniff that one out.
I'm, I'm just not going to bet Iowa
to win. I'm not going to pick Iowa to win. West Coast game until they do. So that's where
we're going to be at. We don't Mark Grunowski obviously is going to be the starter here.
Hank Brown's got a lot of buzz, the transfer from Auburn. Jackson Stratton, we saw him
last year and at least there were some glimpses out of him. And they got Jeremy Heklinski
coming in from Wake Forest.
Who ultimately wins that backup job?
Who would you anticipate,
a Gronowski, you know, tweaks an ankle week one,
who would be the guy that would be taking the snaps next?
Right now, I think it's Hank.
I think he's kind of in charge of that second spot,
but I'm keeping an eye on Heklinskiensky, um, you know, and I had
Tim Lester on the pod and he said that Warren Ruggiero said that he thought he
would have been a four year starter at Wake Forest, that's Wake Forest, but
still it's just, that's basically anointing him as a starter. If he was still there.
So that tells me the guy's got a little bit of something, but he just had, he wasn't with
them in spring.
So it's just, it would be hard for me to see him as a number two guy right away, but you
never know.
You just never know what they might do.
By the way, I, you know, something that we haven't really talked about, I did,
because Tim's always kind of poo-pooed the slow mesh, you know, the Jero slow mesh stuff.
He kind of brought it up and when we did that podcast interview that they, you know, might
have a little little of all that in reserve sometime. We may pull that out of the, out
of the back end of the closet there
at some point, which would be kind of fun if they do that.
Can you look at it quizzically?
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what you guys can frame.
Google slow mesh, and it's basically,
you stand there with the running back for a long time
before you make a decision
if you're going to hand it off or not.
It's something that he ran at Wake Forest.
It is slow developing, but when
it's clicking, it is almost impossible because your wide receivers getting 15 yards down
the field before you actually have to make that decision.
You gotta have a lot of faith in your line.
Oh, absolutely. And I think that they do.
Well, it seems like it. And if they're running that, they must. Yeah, no, that one's a new
one to me. I can't wait to see it. We'll see if it does materialize.
Any more football, Trent?
Basketball from early in the week, Tom?
A takeaway or two from the media availability?
Well, I was not there at the availability early this week.
I was on that little family jaunt, but I did get out yesterday, went to Chicago for some
recruiting. So I got
to watch some, some high school basketball and got to see Colin Rice in action yesterday. And,
and I'll tell you what, uh, schools can have four guys out on the road at once.
Nebraska had all four of their coaches and that included head coach Fred Hoyt at Colin Rice's
first game.
When you go four deep, that's the big guns.
So they had three assistants and Fred watching Colin Rice, the kid from working Northwest,
who's really blown up.
He's a terrific player and he's still planning to go see Northwestern later this month and
in Illinois.
But after that, maybe a decision.
We talked a little bit about Michigan State and UCLA trying to get in.
They may offer, we'll see.
But yeah, yesterday was interesting because Nebraska was 40 Northwestern was too deep.
I know Ben McCollum is there today with assistant coach Jesse Shaw.
Jesse was watching the game last night.
So they've got right now I think I think Nebraska is in the lead, maybe kind of semi comfortably.
But we'll see if they can they can hold on to them.
By the way, I'm watching the slow mesh right now.
It's fascinating.
It is.
It's fun to watch, too.
It's kind of hypnotic when it's going.
Yes.
It's wild.
Yeah, that's great.
Hey, speaking of basketball recruiting, the women's basketball program, I mean, they're
going big game hunting here.
They're going after some of the top prospects. Now you got a local one here with Jenica Lewis
from Johnston, but they're going across the country. We talked about Kate Harper, Matt
Harper and his daughter when she came to town back during the season, Addison Bjorn from
down in Kansas City, one of the top 10 players in the country. Where are they? I mean, it
feels like this recruiting classes, women's recruiting class is kind of slow right now
To be committing any insight into the reason for that and what I was chances are for some of these top-level prospects
Yeah, I think they feel pretty good about
Some of the some of the players that they've got I think right now they're just waiting to kind of formulate who's gonna be on campus
This fall this week when Kyle Houston's over in Chicago today and tomorrow at the Nike Nationals,
which has the big Iowa team with Jenica Lewis and everybody on that team.
So they'll get to see those players and get some feedback from.
So I look for a lot of content from Kyle on women's basketball front, but they're, yeah,
they're going to game hunting and you might as well try and see what you get. I mean,
the, they're as hot as they're ever going to be as a product and you, you've got to
try and capitalize and get some of these, of these top players. And I think they're
going to get a couple of them. I really do. And then you took a couple of them up with
Addie Beal and Leila Hayes and Journey Houston and you start building a really strong foundation,
not just now, but for the next four or five years.
The brand has never been hotter.
That certainly seems like an understatement in a lot of ways.
Hey, Tom, back to where we started, and that's Big Ten Football.
I'm guessing you'll be in the audience for Petite on Tuesday once he speaks.
Fascinated to hear this because Trent and I both feel that there's going to be a collision,
of course, between him and
Sankey at some point, anxious to see how it turns out.
And you know, Petit is going to be forced to talk about it, whether he wants to or not.
And he hasn't wanted to up until this point.
Yeah.
And frankly, he has a very good position to take in terms of
Demanding things that I don't love. I don't like the
demanding for
Teams, but I like the position that he's taking that the SEC needs to go to nine conference. Yep
I do too. Yep, and and I think that is part of that though
It's a financial decision for the sec.
All they have to do is get ESPN to say, Hey, we'll give you more money.
And guess what?
That night's games happening.
I just, so how it's going to be.
Um, so it's, you know, it's always money that drives every decision.
And I think that's what we're just kind of waiting for is for them to, to, to decide
that they want to equal up and, and, uh, go to nine conference games and TDS.
I, I, he is really right, but well, he's got a bad hand that he's playing though,
because nobody likes that four thing like four, four, whatever.
I think the big 12 should be all over it personally with there too, that they
would get automatic, but we'll see.
They can still fight for that third. There's going to be a couple of. They still, they still got to decide if they want 16.
Yeah. You know, yeah, that's true too.
I think they have to go to 16. I just, you know, cause you're going to go there anyway.
At some point.
You might as well just, you might as well just go there now. It's a nice round bracket and go go from there.
Looking forward to seeing you Tuesday night at Circa if not before Tom Cakert have have
a safe flight out there. Okay, we'll see you in Vegas. Okay, I'll see you guys in Vegas.
Yep. Thank you, Tom Cakert, HawkeyeReport.com part of On3Media.
Thanks as always Tom for joining us and great information. Some good recruiting notes from
Tom and yes, Las Vegas next week.
We're going to talk about as we continue here on Locked On Hawkeyes, what I'm going to be
chasing out in Las Vegas. Well, yeah, the craps table, the slot machines, but no, Iowa football
topics, what we're going to be looking for. And do you have some questions for me? We'll do that
next on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
Trent Condon back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen
every day. Vegas next week, more fun than Indianapolis, even better than Chicago
for me, excited to get out there and yes, also be doing some work. So next week I will be doing shows from you each and
every day from Las Vegas, your team every day. We got you covered here on
Lockdown Hawkeyes. Make sure you hit subscribe if you're watching this or a
five star review. Subscribe over on the podcast side of things. It really does
help us out with those metrics and getting us front more Hawkeye fans. So a couple of things, we're going to have the three players that are going to be there.
We'll hear from Cohen Engtringer, guy this career start number is at one, which is just
so rare for Iowa football.
And I think he shows you what people inside that locker room think about him.
Ethan Hurkett, local kid from the corridor, Cedar Rapids Xavier, try hard guy, and a guy
that certainly has popped at times on that defensive line and you're hoping there's another level for
him the next season and then Logan Jones and for me I think Logan Jones might be
the most intriguing of those guys just because you remember what he took over
makes the move from defensive line over to offensive line the heir apparent to
Tyler Lindner bomb incredibly huge shoes to fill for him.
He struggled as a sophomore,
seemed to struggle at snapping the football,
the basic tenet, and then what he's developed into,
an all Big Ten player and a preseason All-American
at the center position coming into the season
for Logan Jones.
Want to talk to him about a few of those things
and this offensive line as a whole.
I have a lot of questions and I want to get his perspective. Bryce George, we haven't seen him.
The transfer coming in from Ferris State. What is he going to be helping out at that left tackle
position? The young left tackle, Trevor Lowe. I'm excited to see what he has to say about him because
when you're looking at upside of that left tackle position, he's absolutely that. So we'll have
plenty of stuff for you. Kirk Farrance is gonna be there.
We'll have some audio from that and a whole lot more.
Hopefully get Kirk on the side for a little bit
and be able to talk to him and get his perspective
at a bunch of different topics there from Las Vegas,
including Kirk Farrance in Las Vegas.
I mean, you talk about oil and water.
I think that seems like it is a number one.
So we'll have some fun with that coming up next week Your team every day here on the lockdown network
I got you covered on the Hawkeye side and whatever your favorite team is your favorite baseball team in the MLB your favorite
Team in the NBA and a Joe NFL every single day covered here on locked on
Thanks for being with us as always we will talk to you again gonna have an episode for you likely coming out on Sunday evening into Monday morning

With some podcasts coming your way from Las Vegas as always. Thanks for being with us and making locked on Hawkeyes your first listen every day
We'll talk to you again next week until then go Hawks
