I'm recovering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the state of Iowa. You can hear me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network each weekday from noon to two. Today, we're going to take a look positioned by position of where the Hawkeyes are and what needs to improve as Big Ten play begins. We'll also talk with David Eichold from 24-7 SportsHawkeye Insider.com.
Starting point is 00:01:10 A look at the Hawkeyes and what he heard earlier this week at the press conferences and a huge recruit for Iowa basketball as Ben McCollum has done it again and has got another top prospect. We begin today position by position. A look at this Iowa football team and where we are as we get ready for Friday night. against Rutgers. We open things up with a look at each position, of course, at quarterback. And as I go through my grading scale at this point in time, at quarterback, I have to get Mark Garnowski. I graded a D plus. Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe the time
Starting point is 00:01:47 off and the surgery in the spring was a bigger hurdle than I anticipated coming into the year, but I don't think anything short than disappointing would be the correct term to use. Have we seen improvements? Absolutely. Are there things that can get better? And I believe will get better. I don't think there's any doubt about that. However, from what I thought this was going to be coming into the season, this is my grading scale, and I give quarterback and Mark Grinowski AD Plus through the non-conference. Up next is running back. And at the running back spot, the injuries have been a big talking point. Obviously, we have seen Kamari Moulton just for a few limited snaps early this season. He was out by the second series of the game in the opener against Albany,
Starting point is 00:02:30 the anticipated starter he hasn't been there. And we thought there was a lot of depth, but Terrell Washington Jr. It has been a disappointment, I think, from him at that position. You go a step further. Jazzy on Patterson, he is what he is, right? And it's a hard charging guy. And he's been the best out of this group at this time. We saw a great debut from Xavier Williams of what he was able to do in the second half of the game against Albany. Yet, where was against Iowa State. He's banged up now and he's going to be out this week. So there's a lot of that piece that makes this one a depth piece that we thought it was going to be. And then there's Nathan McNeil. And I'm incredibly excited about McNeil because I think you see a guy that just
Starting point is 00:03:10 has a different wiggle to him, right? He understands the blocking scheme. It seems like he's a guy that just has that innate ability to find blocks, know when to cut back. You can see that from the young guy. And let's hope that they take the trading wheels off a little bit and just let him roll because in terms of talent, boy, he looks there. Even Brevindal, who we've talked about, obviously, during the off season, a whole bunch, he's been banged up again, wasn't available for the Iowa State game with an ankle injury. It was back and got a couple of carries last week, but still, you go through these, the injuries been that. And what I expected out of this running pack group, it hasn't quite been there. I got a C plus here.
Starting point is 00:03:52 still want to see more. Maybe that's a tough grade, but that's where I are. Up next wide receiver. Boy, we spent a lot of time of this improved wide receiver group. And I think it is improved. They just haven't been able to utilize it. So maybe this goes hand at hand with Tim Lester, Kirk Farrant's, the offensive staff, because I think this has also been underwhelming.
Starting point is 00:04:15 The wide receiver group that feels deep for the first time in a long time had at least a lot of guys that had an opportunity. and they just have not broken through. Sam Phillips had the nice game, two touchdowns out of Seth Anderson, less time out. But overall, from where I thought they were going to be coming into this season, line receiver is a C-minus.
Starting point is 00:04:34 I mean, we're going through the offense, and this is not very good. Up next, the tight end position. Normally a stalwart for the Hawkeye program. Tight-end you is it dead? It doesn't look very good right now. Obviously, the injury to your starter at us in Estringa is going to be impactful.
Starting point is 00:04:53 But not only that, he got Zach Ortworth, who can catch the ball, well, as long as he doesn't drop it, but also isn't a great blocker. And he got Hayden Large, who's a converted fullback. And the young guys, I think DJ Voname, has got a chance to be really good down the line, but he's still just a walk-on redshirt freshman,
Starting point is 00:05:14 we're talking about. I mean, that's how he began his career as a walk-on, and he's still young. A lot of times, Iowa, you're waiting until these guys are registered juniors before we're talking about guys like that making an impact, and here he is out there. Michael Burt, haven't seen much of him. Thomas Meyer has been traveling the true freshman out of Clear Lake. This has been a huge disappointment.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And the tight end position rank at this point in time, I got it a D. So we've gone through, and it's not a very good grade for the offense. And it probably shouldn't be. But then we get to the offensive line. And that, this is a good one at this point. So I'm going to give the offensive line to this point, a B-plus and would be higher. I think we'd be in that A range if they would have held up in that final drive against Iowa State. Remember Jennings Dunker, he left before the third down play, the sacks that were there,
Starting point is 00:06:04 and that final drive I think definitely impacts it. Well, Ron blocking has been very good. Pass blocking has been very good. Trevor Lock has held up really well at that left tackle position in his first year as a starter and the rest of the group. Well, Jennings Dunker, Logan Jones, Bo Stevens, they'll banged up. And Kate Peeper, I think those four guys have all been really good. And Lauke has been certainly even better than maybe I thought he was going to be at the initial point.
Starting point is 00:06:31 So a B plus for the offensive line. But that is definitely the high watermark. That is definitely at the top of the heap for this team. Overall, the offense, I give it a C minus. Maybe a D plus. That's how disappointed I am in the passing game. Obviously, he's a huge part of that. Let's jump over to the defensive side of the football.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Defensive line I have as a beat, been very solid, good, sturdy against the run. I've been excellent there. Haven't got to the quarterback a ton, though, Saturday night against UMass. They were able to do that a little bit more. This game coming up against Rutgers, this is going to be a chance maybe for them to feast with the injuries that they have at their tackle position. They've been good. They've been solid across the board.
Starting point is 00:07:12 The depth is definitely showing out there a defensive line, but got to get it to the quarterback a little bit more and create some havoc plays. And if you're able to do that, definitely a chance to go up, I think, for this defensive line. Linebacker, I have as a C-minus. Now, this maybe is a little bit unfair because of what we've had in the middle from Jack Campbell into Jay Higgins over the last five years. Those guys were all Americans, those guys, tremendous football players. And Jayden Harrell, a guy that's been around the program for five years getting his first starting job, he struggled. Carson Shire has been good, but he hasn't. been elite and I thought there was a chance maybe he was going to be elite and another guy
Starting point is 00:07:52 with more experience maybe they can get there. I thought Harold took steps forward on Saturday and it's been interesting the way that they've been shuffling things around a little bit and what they've been doing on some third long situations, getting him off the field, putting Rex Roth and Shire on there together in the backfield when they're going in the linebacker spot when they're going to that 425 cash look that they employ so much when it gets into those long distance, likely passing situations getting Harrell off the field. And then the defensive back and out of the defense, I think this is the best mark. I had questions coming in.
Starting point is 00:08:25 I think we all did. T.J. Hall has been outstanding. Deshawn Lee has been better than I thought he was going to be this year. Safeties has not to have the issues that we saw a year ago at that spot. I got a B plus here. B plus out of the defensive backfield. Again, with, as we talked about with the defensive line, getting to the quarterback, got to force turnovers.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And love the line from Seth Wallace. As it came out over the press conference day that Seth Wallace has been calling the Doe Boys, as the defensive backs have been dubbed for a long time now in the Iowa defensive backfield, the No Boys, because they got no picks. Let's change that Friday night. Caldmanus, he's been able to give the Hawkeyes the ball a few times throughout his career, both in Minnesota and Rutgers. Let's hope that continues on Friday evening in Piscataway. Finally, we go to special teams. Drew Stevens, a B, missed extra point. miss field goal and that's not on him it's part of the operation a bad snaps and and i guess that
Starting point is 00:09:22 goes hand at hand i guess with his grade here tremendous leg but as i said after he missed those kicks on on saturday night it just always sticks in the back of mind what happened at the end of the year two years ago continuing from there to putter rice dakin see i expected more from dakin at this point he's had a pump blocked though not his fault again we're talking about the operation that goes hand in hand with it. I had a couple of clunkers against Iowa State, including the first one, had another one that got a good role, but wasn't a tremendous spot. A little bit of a disappointment here from Reese Staken. Now remember, he got off to a slow start last year. I really turned it on. And then finally, we go to the return and came Wichin, and I got it to
Starting point is 00:10:04 B-minus. And I don't. We're coming on the heels of that ridiculous performance, but the Iowa state game still sticks. And the missed opportunities in that game, the bad decisions in that game, even with what he did on Saturday night, still a B-minus in the return game. So put it all together, we're kind of like got a C-plus for this team, C-plus, they're two and one. They obviously beat the teams that absolutely almost any Iowa team could beat in U-Mass, but the loss to Iowa State, even a three-point loss leaves it where we are. Conference play can change it.
Starting point is 00:10:37 We'll talk about that as we continue. Speaking of continuing, David Eichold is going to join us next from hawkeye insider.com, a breakdown of what he heard from Kirk and Company at the press conference and a whole lot more. We'll do that as we continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move. Starting point is 00:12:41 David Eichold covers the Hawks 24-7 sports, Hawkeye Insider.com, and he joins us. Long time, David Eicholts. How are you? Doing all right, man. I'm actually happy it's a Friday game because you guys know in this business when you're covering a Saturday game, especially the night games.
Starting point is 00:13:07 You really don't get a chance to watch a lot of college football. So as I was telling Trent off the air, I'm excited to get all my work done Saturday morning, and I'm just going to sit on my couch or maybe cruise the bar scene and watch college football. No, don't blame you. Don't blame you a bit. There's some big games, obviously, the Big Ten NBC prime timer, Illinois and Indiana certainly has a little cashier. But as you mentioned, some pretty big game for the sake of our state on Friday night with Iowa traveling to Rutgers. And there's some good news and some bad news at that position.
Starting point is 00:13:39 right? When it comes to Kamari Moulton being back and he is absolutely going to play, according to Kirk Farrants, or he's been cleared to play. We'll see if he does. But Xavier Williams, on the other hand, news not so good there. So let's start there, David. Yeah, obviously, you know, Kirk kind of made a funny joke where he talked about. He would rather prefer not to have a prisoner exchange, as he called it. Xavier Williams getting out and then Kamari Moulton coming back in. But, you know, Camarie Moulton is a guy that we all thought had chance to have a really big breakout year, done a lot of the right things in the off season, got a chance to say how Caleb Johnson
Starting point is 00:14:16 operated last year and had a few strong games for Iowa. But to get Camarie Moulton back, it finally feels like there's some health news that that's going in favor of Iowa because, you know, Iowa is so healthy going into the season. And ever since it feels like the Reese Vander's the weird situation that he got himself into, and he is going to miss another game, by the way. he'll be out next week. It's kind of in a downward trajectory. So for Iowa to get Moulton back, obviously losing Xavier Williams, the team's leading rusher is a bummer. But Moulton, I feel like the team's best all around back. I think you're getting a lot out jazz Patterson, and he's really
Starting point is 00:14:52 comfortable with his role, and he's going to be a frequent contributor there. I don't think you're worried too much about the depth of the rang back room. And the guy that I would like to see a little bit more of, I don't know if you guys are the same opinion. I'd love to see freshman Nathan McNeil continue to get some refs. I know you probably don't want to burn his red shirt, but he just moves differently. He has a lot of maturity in his game for being a true freshman. But I'll be very, very intrigued about how that kind of snap count goes. Are they going to throw back in Kamari, you know, carrying the ball 20 times? Or are they going to say, hey, you know what? We're going to give him 10 to 12 carries. Maybe they try to get TJ Washington going again. He hasn't had a start that he would
Starting point is 00:15:31 like. Are they going to rely a lot on Jazz Patterson? Are they going to throw the ball more? It's definitely one of the bigger, I think, storylines hanging to this one. Like, yes, major news. Rangback one is back for the first time since, I believe he left the first game after the first drive. So to get him back is definitely a big deal. What are the things Kirk mentioned yesterday was special teams? People probably will just remember Cade Weechan and the outstanding performance he had. But a block punt, a missed extra point, a miss fuel goal, snaps look shaky.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I can't afford that. Take us back to Kirk yesterday. could tell that one that one's rankling him a little bit because iwa they can't afford not to be great in special teams you have to be great orally in special teams and on defense if your offense is not balanced and frequently getting the ball down the field right and i think special teams i think for the right reasons we were not talking a lot about preseason because i don't know about you guys i chalked them up as having a top five special teams you at the country top three even between restaken, between Drew Stevens, between, you know, the returning award winner
Starting point is 00:16:37 and Kane Week, it just seemed like things have been missing. And those small misquies, I mean, the missed extra point, the blocked points, the lack of returns or execution against Iowa State, like, that will cost Iowa games in Big Ten play because you talk about Iowa doing the small things, right, winning games in such weird ways, right? How many times the special team has been a major part of that? I think you have to give LeVar Woods the benefit of the doubt. I think you have to give
Starting point is 00:17:04 Kirk Farrants the benefit of the doubt. But you can tell, like, Kirk was very, very pressed about it. And kind of analyzing Kirk over the last few years, guys, I don't know if you've picked up on the same pattern. My assumption when it comes to Kirk Barron's in criticism he gives his teams is based on the level
Starting point is 00:17:20 he expects them to operate at. When Iowa's passing offense was not good over the last few years when it would, whether it be Kayed back, Namara, Deacon Hill, or a couple other guys, He really would not criticize or hold accountable to the passing offense. And I believe it's because he had no expectations for them. I think when you see this year, you look at the special teams.
Starting point is 00:17:40 When you look at the passing offense, he's been fairly critical, directly critical of them more times than I can remember. And I think it's because he expected them to be farther along and executing cleaner. So I think he's challenging his team and there's no doubt that he's challenging special teams to kind of get back together going into big 10 play. Oh, and go back to something you said, David, back to the running back position. when it comes to Nathan McNeil. Do you know if Ferrence and the player have had that redshirt discussion is to know in a perfect world
Starting point is 00:18:08 what the team would like, what he would like? I'm sure McNeil would like to play if he had ultimately the final call. Do you know if they've talked? I don't know if there's been a decision made, but I'll say this. I think especially if you're running back, what do we always talk about?
Starting point is 00:18:25 The short shot playing when it comes to running back. I mean, I'm not going to blame him at all if he wants to play right away. way, right? And I think it's well deserved because you talk about running backs kind of washing out of the league at what, 29, 30 years old. There's a handful of backs still in the league. But anyway, the thing I will go back to is before the season going into the Albany game, we asked about the freshmen. And he said, everybody is kind of wait and see, but Nathan McNeil is kind of the only one to be green lit right now with the ultimate green light. That tells me that they
Starting point is 00:18:54 don't plan on red shirting him. And honestly, with the way that the running back health has been so far. I think he got to continue to prepare him like you're going to play, right? So I don't know if there's been an exact decision made if they've talked, but based on the verbiage of Kirk, based on the reps he's gotten, I would be slightly surprised if he ended up redshirting this season. Definitely need that kind of skill out there. You talk to Mark Garnowski on Tuesday. Let's hear a little bit about the quarterback. Like a few of the things that we saw out of him, it does feel like they're taking steps forward with the caveat. It was UMass. They're all. Still, Grinowski going into this week in the short week Friday night against Rutgers.
Starting point is 00:19:34 He's got to play well, I think, to get this road victory. So I think two things can be true, right? One, we're not going to take too much away from Iowa's passing performance against UMass, right? Like, let's keep it real here. That's what we do on this station. But number two, Iowa is not in a position to pick where it gets its momentum from or positive production from, especially in the passing game. So you can't really hold it against them.
Starting point is 00:19:57 I do think Mark kind of got a swaggerback. I think he's obviously a lot more comfortable. And I think Iowa's passing game as a whole has taken a step forward time and time again. And I'm of the unpopular opinion. I actually think Mark's probably the fourth biggest issue in the passing game right now. I think the route running is a big issue. And guys, how about the drops? I mean, Mark Gernowski's completion percentage would probably be in the mid-60s if they cleaned up half the drop.
Starting point is 00:20:22 And I'm not talking about a drop like, oh, they have to jump up and try to make a miraculous catch. oh, they're diving. They're hitting them right in the chest. They're hitting them right in the hand and they've not been able to haul it in. And I like Perks message yesterday. We said we call them wide receivers, not wide droppers. Like, he knows it's an issue right now. But when it comes to Mark, I think
Starting point is 00:20:40 he's clearly a lot more confident in what he's doing. I don't think he's pressing as much. You can tell he he kind of believes in what the team's being able to run. And I like what he said when we asked him about the drops. We basically ask, hey, is there anything you can do when he throw the football or
Starting point is 00:20:56 or physically to kind of help out your guys. He said, no, not really, but I'm going to continue to encourage them. I'm not going to second guess myself when I throw them the ball. They need to know I have faith in them. And he said, I'm always going to be happy to stay late, you know, throw them extra passes, make sure they're hitting the jug machines and kind of control what they can control. So I think from a leadership standpoint and all that, I think you're getting the right things
Starting point is 00:21:20 out of them. I'm very interested because Rutgers defense has been shaky. I think Iowa is going to maintain that sort of aggressive mentality. I think they're going to test them down the field. But another thing that Greg Shiano, the Rutgers head coach said yesterday, is he stated Mark Grinowski's running ability could give them a little bit of trouble. And I'm kind of eyeball on that saying, hey, you know what? That means there might be some receivers left on the island.
Starting point is 00:21:43 He might be able to take some shots down field. He might be able to run the slow mesh. But Mark Grinowski is not going to shy away from Big Ten physicality. And if you need four yards, he'll go out there and get you five. But I do think Mark's feeling very confident hanging into the game, but it's a whole different animal. Big Ten football, blackout. He's playing these games. And ultimately, guys, he's being paid to win these type of games, to win Big Ten road games.
Starting point is 00:22:08 There is pressure on him. But I think he's in the best position possible, given all the context of everything else. Yeah, good intel on Shiano. I did not hear that. Last thing, I thought Jaden Harrell had his best game as a hawk. I guess you've got to put that caveat. Yep, UMass. I get it, but a lot of criticism coming in his way.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I thought he played pretty well on Saturday night. I thought he was too. I think Harold's an interesting case because I always think he knows what's going on in terms of play recognition, but sometimes he's been a step slow to recognize it. But again, that's the type of thing, man, where that will kill you in Big Ten play. I think he's had some really good moments. I think he's had some low lights as well. I think this needs to be the week where he has his best all-around game because if he can do it
Starting point is 00:22:51 against Rutgers. Now, again, albeit it's Rutgers, their offense has been pretty darn good this season. I know they've played, you know, Cal Eastern University Tech, Ohio, and, you know, some other Cupcake, but they're executing. I think Calic Maness has seven touchdowns, no interceptions, complete in 72 percent of passes. I do think there's some pressure on Harold to maintain that high level play and to recognize those plays and be a step ahead of everything instead of trying to play catch up. But I'm right there with you. I think he played his best game against UMass, but I would like to see him get more tackled, considering Iowa's defensive mentality and the way they approach everything, it's the funnel tackles to the
Starting point is 00:23:31 linebackers, and especially the Mike linebacker. He's leading the team in tackles, but he only has 19 through three games. I like to see him have a double-digit game against Rutgers. Quick hit on this, just 30 seconds left. Luke Brewer, a kid from just down the road from us in Norwalk, reclassifying big news. One of the top tight ends in the country, Iowa State, Iowa, involved Penn State, Tennessee, Miami. What are you hearing on his recruiting front and going a year early to the collegial ranks? Yeah, I mean, I think that kind of changes Iowa's mentality because I really wasn't too sure they were going to take at 26 tight enders, too. I thought they were going to really focus in on Jack DeGine and Luke Brewer, but Brewer's entering 0.6, I think you throw the bow to him.
Starting point is 00:24:11 I think he's an elite prospect. I think he's a legitimate four-star prospect, probably top 24-7 guy, went to all send done if he has a big season. but yeah you're exactly right Tennessee Penn State Miami calling I know Georgia's calling as well Iowa State and Iowa this is a guy that's going to rake in some big NIL dollars and if I'm Iowa
Starting point is 00:24:29 with the way the Tide-in room looks right now I think you're writing a blank check because he has potential will be a really good college tight-end David I call 24-7 sports Hawkeye Insider.com David thanks for popping on appreciate it yeah thanks guys appreciate you

A little hoops news over the weekend as Iowa lands four-star forward from out in Washington, not Washington, Iowa, Washington State, as they pick up a commitment from Ethan Harris.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Harris, a four-star from the recruiting services. And what I absolutely love, I mean, you see the highlights. All right, looks good. Versatile, and that's something that certainly Ben McCullum is searching for, right? A guy that can play multiple positions, has an ability. to play the three, play the four, be a stretch guy, looks bouncy. I mean, has a lot of good things. And here's the other part, though.
Starting point is 00:27:26 When Iowa goes to a place that they normally don't recruit, and not a place that is an easy drive, getting from Washington State to Iowa, and gets a prospect, that's one thing. But on top of it, when you get a guy from the state of Washington that had an offer from Washington, that had an offer from Gonzaga, I mean, that says a ton about the recruiting ability of Ben McCullum.
Starting point is 00:27:51 This was somebody that they identified right away when they got the Iowa job. When McCollum and his staff came together, it was one of the first prospects that they were after and one of the ones of the more likely ones that they were able to get. Going back to Trey Thompson, where everybody thought he was going to Purdue, and I was able to flip him as he reclassified and came in this season. And now with Trey Thompson, you add another versatile guy that can play a couple of different spots for you, beat you in a myriad of different ways.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Fits this system incredibly well. Iowa hit, I think, a home run here. Now Iowa turns their attention to the back court. Last weekend, Joseph Hartman, he took a visit. They got Quentin Coleman coming up later in September. Both of those guys in the back court, that's going to be next, and that's what they're looking for. But another great job out of Ben McCollum and his staff
