Iowa Hoops gets throttled once again, this time at the hands of USC.
A terrible effort on the defensive end, something's never changed.

Well, that was another dreadful effort as Iowa hoops falls 99-89 at the hands of USC.
Iowa goes out to the West Coast needing at minimum a split.
Boy, if they could get a sweep.
Well, that is off the table now as Iowa gets drubbed by USC.
Came back in the second half.
And as we look at this game, it's just, it's more of the same.
And we're going to get into some big picture stuff.
John Boenkamp is going to join us a little bit later on from the Associated Press.
We'll talk with him a little bit and provide a little different perspective on things,
certainly than I do, and my thoughts on kind of the future of Iowa basketball.
Plus, we'll get ready for Thursday night's matchup as the Iowa women in a very desperate spot
against Nebraska.
We'll talk about that matchup a little bit more.
But let's go back to what we saw on Tuesday night
against USC, the road trip, a USC team
that had been terribly inconsistent.
Now, the last time out, USC played incredibly well
against Illinois.
They went on the road, they got the victory,
and maybe that was what they needed to ignite them.
A lot of new faces, musclemen coming in,
a guy that has won everywhere that he's been.
He has been a big-time winner at Nevada,
been all over the place, and has done a really nice job.
But that win against Illinois, you had to put the caveat on there.
They did it without Jacuzonis, their talented freshman.
And so I don't want to say what school is cool, but I kind of felt it was. Anyway, USC, though, what we knew
they were going to be, right? A team with great athletes, a team that is incredibly physically
talented and probably was going to beat Iowa on the glass. However, they didn't shoot it very well.
This is a team that Iowa could probably
quicken the pace against, and if they were able to do that, they were going to have a chance to
win the game. And in a game where you score 89 points in the Big Ten, you should win
a majority of those games. But they can't. And they can't because of the inability to get stops on the defensive end. Time in and time out.
And this one, a USC team that came in shooting 31% from behind the arc.
Average six three-pointers a game.
They're on fire.
I mean, they're doing everything that they want in this game.
USC finishes the game.
A team, frankly, is a terrible three-point shooting team.
10 of 15 from behind the arc. 67%. They shoot 64% from the field. 37 of 57 from the field.
They missed 10 free throws, and that kept Iowa in the game. They out-rebound the Hawkeyes by 17.
Double them up in offensive rebounds,
have more assists.
It's just everything was going their way.
They were able to do whatever they want.
And as Iowa was able to get back in it in the second half,
they battled, they get it back to five.
And I guess that's the one positive that you take away
from just this hideous effort is they didn't quit.
That's one thing you do get with Fran McCaffrey's teams.
Sometimes they get beat.
Sometimes teams get hot.
Well, a lot of teams get hot against them and make a bunch of shots.
However, they don't give up.
You go back to the miraculous win against Michigan State with Fran staring down the
official on the sideline, those kind of things.
His teams don't quit.
So give him credit there.
We do.
And as we look at this big picture, and we'll get to that
because that's an important part of this.
I think that's something that you have to put on the positive side
of Fran McCaffrey coached teams.
Peyton Sanford, once again, really good in the second half.
They need two halves out of him.
This team just isn't good enough, even against a very average
USC team, to go on the road and not have Peyton Sanford pay well for the whole game as they tug
themselves a big hole. Freeman was good again. He's been really solid on the offensive end of
the floor. I thought he ran the floor well, looked a little more springy, a little more bounce to him.
23-6 for him. Josh Dix, 13 points, not real aggressive, a 5-10 from the floor.
Need him taking probably 15, 18 shots a game.
He's just that talented offensively.
Drew Thelwell, love him.
Absolutely love the dude.
I mean, you talk about a guy that never gives up.
He's out there.
He's fighting.
He's grinding.
He's trying to play as physical as possible.
He's doing everything you want.
It was so weird, too.
When Iowa finally gets back into the game,
suddenly it gets all ticky-tacky from the officials.
I hated that.
I really did.
And it doesn't matter.
It just felt like, all right, we've seen enough.
We're going to start whistling everything.
And it was both ways.
It wasn't just against Iowa or anything like that.
It's not to say that Iowa lost the game because of the officiating,
because that's not right.
They lost the game because of their inability to play defense.
However, the flow of the game really changed there with about six minutes left.
They started to call every touch foul, every hand check, and didn't like the way, certainly,
the game was officiated.
And because of the way that Thelwell was playing, Brock Harding, he was on the bench a lot.
Only played 24 minutes of the game.
They went with the lineup of Thelwell, Dix, Peyton Sanford, Owen Freeman,
and Price Sanford out there a whole lot.
I thought Dembale came in there, kind of played his role.
Didn't play a ton, just nine minutes.
I liked what we saw out of Sadio Traore.
And I think those minutes need to build.
Just seven minutes from him.
He was active when he was in there.
He looked engaged.
He was able to get to the foul line, knock down his free throws. He's a different kind of physical player than what Iowa has. And
when they go small and they have plenty this year, he's a guy I think that needs to get more minutes
and needs to continue to build. He's looking much better overall than what we've seen in the past.
So that's one that I put out there. Definitely need to see more Seydou Traore.
Big picture, though, is Iowa can't get it done.
And this is where the frustration lies,
because Fran McCaffrey is a fine basketball coach.
Fran McCaffrey plays an exciting brand.
Fran McCaffrey brought this program back to what they were in the 90s.
Not the 80s, old-timers.
What they were in the 90s. Make the tournament more times than not. Maybe win a game in the 90s, not the 80s, old timers, what they were in the 90s. Make the tournament more
times than not, maybe win a game in the tournament, but that's it. And until Dr. Tom's second to last
game and the win against Arkansas and his last victory in the Hawkeyes, remember, they went a
decade without making a sweet 16. I know it's sweet 16 for so many of you. Ray McCaffrey brought
them back, but has he hit the ceiling?
It feels like he has. This program is not going to elevate. And a perfect example is what we saw
against USC. The reason that they're never going to elevate, the reason that they're never going
to be able to be even more consistent winner come March, why they struggle in the Big Ten tournament.
Seemingly every year, it's not the one year that they made it to the championship and won it against Purdue.
Outside of that, why they struggle in the Big Ten tournament, in the NCAA tournament,
when they're taking on the best teams come March, is because you have to be able to play defense.
And they don't.
Great offensive team, year after year.
It is a thing of beauty.
It doesn't matter the parts. It doesn't matter
the skill set. Fran McCaffrey is going to have his team playing high level, elite level offense
every single year. They could take you, me, and three guys from the YMCA, and he can put them
out there and make us play a good brand of offensive basketball. Now, we look terrible
defensively, but he could do that. That's what he does. And as we've seen this,
and again, we're going big picture here. I don't believe that the next coach is going to have more
Big Ten success than Frey McCaffrey has had. When you look at the win-loss record, you look at the
finishes in the Big Ten year after year. It is consistently in the top half of the league,
seemingly every single year.
And he's done that with a budget that's much different than their brethren.
That's to be commended. But the fan base has checked out. And here's the reason I think that
this fan base has checked out. Why people, for the most part, have given up on the Fran McCaffrey era.
for the most part have given up on the frame of Caffrey era. It's not the lack of sweet 16s. It's the inability to evolve. Look, I know there's plenty of you out there that are out on Kirk
Ferentz. Games passed him by. But Kirk Ferentz, during his 26 years, he has evolved. He has
changed. You go back to 2015, the fake field goal that they ran, the excitement that was built.
And it was Kirk 3.0 or New Kirk, I think was the t-shirt that Raygon came up with, right?
New Kirk.
My wife had that t-shirt.
Maybe still does.
Because he has evolved.
Yes, he's still a little more old school, I know, than a lot of you want.
But there has been an evolution.
And we just saw it this year with Tim Lester.
The ability for him to finally let go of the old way of blocking.
He is an offensive line coach, and yet he was able to give it up
and learn something new and do it in a different way.
And he said as much.
He has changed with the times.
Maybe a little too slow for you, but he has evolved.
Bray McCaffrey has it.
Bray McCaffrey has had an opportunity to go out there
and do something, at least try to fix the defense.
Instead, as assistant coaches, our guys have played for him.
They're yes men because Fran wants to be in control.
Fran is not willing to do things outside of his comfort zone.
And it's worked incredibly well.
We have to remember that part of it too.
This guy wins a ton of games. They make the tournament more times than not. And that's good for Iowa
basketball. However, to get to that next level, to do something a little bit different, to get out
of your comfort zone at 65 years old, Fran McCaffrey is not willing to do it. It's why the
rebounding year after year is a problem. It's why the defense year after year is awful. I brought up the example a ton
what Michigan did with John Beeline, right?
They went out there, they did something different.
John Beeline went out, got Luke
was it Luke Yachich, whatever that guy's name was
who's now at Northern Illinois.
He went out there though and got a defensive guru
a guy that was considered somebody
elite at teaching defense. He did
that. A defensive coordinator.
Within a year,
they're playing in the national championship game. They went from a program that was really good,
made the tournament, but that was about it, and went there. And yes, Trey Burke helped,
and the guys that they had, that absolutely helps too. That goes with it. However,
he did something. And what we've seen from Fran, he's not willing to do something different.
Now, I'm frustrated.
I'm disappointed.
I'm down.
Let's bring in John Boenkamp.
He's on the beat.
He's there every week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the home games.
He will bring a different kind of perspective.
We'll talk with John Boenkamp a little bit about that.
Plus, get ready for the matchup Iowa-Nebraska women's basketball.
It is an incredibly important game for the women's team as they continue Big Ten play and three consecutive losses,
something unheard of here recently for Iowa women's hoops.
John Boenkamp joins us next as we continue Locked on Hawkeyes.
Today's episode of Locked on Hawkeyes is brought to you by Wayfair.
After the holiday hustle, there's nothing like giving your home a little TLC.
I always find decluttering and refreshing my home helps get back into the routine.
Whether you're tidying up, cleaning out, or just want to give your space a new look to start the year,
Wayfair has everything you need all within your budget.
So we're putting everything away, getting everything set up.
Mentioned earlier this week,
got a couple of new TVs for the basement.
So we got the multi-TV setup.
Appreciate my wife for doing that.
But now I'm going to need a new couch for down here, right?
I want to get a nice sectional and Wayfair has that.
Even larger items,
free and hassle-free delivery for those big items.
Something for every home.
They got you covered with Wayfair.
Give your home the refresh it needs with Wayfair.
Head to Wayfair.com right now.
That's W-A-Y-F-A-I-R.com.
Wayfair.
Every style.
Every home.
It was up late last night, as I saw the video. Really late.
Really late.
Well, I guess early this morning when it posted.
I watched your stuff.
I think it was Athlon, maybe, last night.
Did you write the recap for Athlon as well?
Yes, I did.
Yeah.
Busy guy.
You can read you anywhere. Associated Press, Hawkeye Nation,
IowaCollegeHoops.com and now Athlon added
to the mix. Well, John, let's get
into it. We both felt
that Iowa needed a split when they went
to California. Trent's really down
so I apologize in advance.
It's over. It's over
is what he's saying.
No, not again.
Not again.
But I'm not sure you can go with they'll be fine.
I hope that they're going to be fine, but we shall see.
So what did you see last night, John, another night where defense was optional?
I will say this.
I missed part of the first half because I was covering high school basketball last night.
But from what I saw, it was a similar thing to some of these road games where they just,
they get off to a slow start, especially defensively, really a slow start in rebounding.
And it just, it put them behind. And I mean, they played much better in the second half, but
when you dig, you can't dig a hole like that in the road, not on the Big Ten.
And so it just felt like all these other road games,
the other couple of road games they've played this year,
where they just didn't get off to a good start.
They struggle on the defensive end.
They struggle rebounding.
Nothing has changed.
And that was kind of my big point at the top of the show, John,
is we've seen Kirk Ferentz evolve. He has changed. And that was kind of my big point at the top of the show, John, is we've seen Kirk Ferentz evolve.
He has changed.
He has adapted in the changing landscape.
Bray McCaffrey hasn't.
His unwillingness to go out and find a defensive coach,
to do things differently on the defensive end of the floor,
to do things different in terms of the kind of guys that are recruiting,
though maybe that is finally changing at this point.
The fan base has checked out.
I saw it firsthand last night with a bunch of people going to bed. Seen enough. kind of guys that are recruiting, though maybe that is finally changing at this point. The fan base is checked out.
I saw it firsthand last night with a bunch of people going to bed.
Seen enough.
People that would never miss an Iowa basketball game, even a late one,
and they were checked out last night.
I don't think that they can dig themselves out of this hole.
I don't think a run to a Sweet 16, even if they were a tournament team, would be enough.
Big picture, what do you think of this program?
even if they were a tournament team, would be enough.
Big picture.
What do you think of this program?
I guess I don't see the big catastrophe that some people do, like you.
But, John, there's 7,000 people at Carver-Hawkeye.
But let me ask you this.
And I've tried to ask this question.
Given all the circumstances of the program,
I mean, you're recruiting talented players.
You're putting players in the NBA.
Kids are graduating.
You don't have any trouble off the court.
Guys aren't getting arrested. What are your realistic expectations for this program
in the current system of college sports
and in the current system of an 18-team, 20-game Big Ten?
And that's the question that I think everybody has to answer at this point when you look at the future of this program.
And, I mean, there's going to be changes coming at some point.
I mean, Fran has been there a while now.
How old is he? I'm not quite sure.
61.
I always lose track of everybody's ages.
His last son is going to be playing basketball at Butler,
where his other son coaches.
You know, how much longer does he want to do this?
Yeah.
So how much longer does he want to do this?
That's the big, that's the question, really.
I mean, because you just can't i mean like
i said this is a program that's been to a postseason tournament since 19 or not 19 2018
if you want to count the 2020 year when they should have been they would have been
they would have been so there's been a lot there's been long post i mean they've been to the
postseason so the question becomes what is the realistic expectation for this program right now?
And, you know, I mean, I don't know who you bring in as a coach that's going to magically make fans appear.
And that's kind of a big problem, though, John, as I look at it is I don't think the next coach is going to be more successful than Fran McCaffrey.
When you talk about big picture, it's probably not going to happen,
but it's just the fan base is checked out.
And I don't know financially.
I mean, can Iowa continue to go through this where, I mean,
we're talking about tickets sold is half full.
And then there's another two, three, 4,000 that bought tickets that aren't even there.
I just don't know financially if this is something that continues
or with all the TV money,
it'll just be fine.
Well, I think, honestly,
I think that right now
that that's all the athletic departments
look at is the TV money
and whatever ticket money
they bring in is fine with them.
And let's be honest,
everything right now
with college basketball
is related to TV money.
I was playing basketball games on Tuesday nights and Friday nights
during a couple weeks.
They've got another one that's Tuesday night, Friday night.
They played a Saturday night game the other night,
which used to be commonplace, now really rare.
So like I said, I don't know what the –
I mean, when people always tell us changes need to be made, okay, fine.
But in this current climate, what is the realistic expectation for this program?
And I don't get a lot of answers sometimes because I don't think anybody knows.
And like I said, I think that the changes will come here in the next couple of years, maybe at the end of this year, maybe at the end of next year.
Who knows?
But I think it's coming,
and I think it will be Fran's decision on what he wants to do
because, again, everybody's like, oh, you need to make a change.
We've been down that road.
We're not that far, and we know where that went.
So sometimes there's a be careful what you wish for on this.
So I don't know.
Like I said, what's the realistic expectation?
That's the biggest question that I think everybody needs to answer moving forward with this program.
And including the people that are there now, what can you do in this current climate to make a winning team?
Yeah, he'll be 66 years old in May, as you mentioned.
His youngest son is going to be playing in Indiana, where his middle son plays,
where his oldest son coaches.
Connect those dots.
What was the positive from the game?
Let's change this around a little bit.
Instead of the gloom and doom that's on the other side.
I like the contrast with the black and the red.
That looked good.
What else, John?
What was the positive?
Freeman?
I really – Owen Freeman was just super last night.
When you looked at his numbers, you know, one time when I got home
from the game I was covering and I was kind of trying to update myself,
I mean, he was 9-10 from the field.
And, you know, was really active inside.
And that's where he, he i think really needs to be
on a consistent basis that kind of player and he's getting there i think um i thought i mean
peyton sanford was really good in the second half he's got to get off to some better start i think
for them josh dick didn't have a good start last night finished well drew fell well as my favorite
player on the team i mean I just like the way this
kid plays. I like his attitude.
And as an OVC guy, I
like how, you know,
I like, you know, how he's adapted
to playing in the Big Ten. So,
I just, I really like him.
And that's why, you know, I look at the
talent, and I've said this before about a certain
other team that wins the World Series.
Buys World Series. No know they win they win it but but I trust the talent of the team I trust Owen Freeman Peyton Sanford is such a big game it makes so many big shots and I like how Josh
Dix plays I like Drew Thelwell I like Brock, too. I would like for him to be a little more consistent with some things.
I just like this group of players, and so I don't –
I guess I'm not quite as down on them as what a lot of people are
because I just think these are good character guys
that are really good basketball players,
and they will win some games that we may not expect here
as we get into February.
I still think it's an NCAA tournament team.
But yeah, there are some
flaws that they may not be able to
correct. I don't know. But I like
this team and I like the talent of this team and I like
these guys and I just think
that this will turn out a lot better than maybe
what people would think. Let's play this
and we'll get you out on this, John.
John, next year.
Okay. Good recruiting class it appears
fran wants to stick around transfer already on campus yes already did that looks like there's
some good prospects coming in we saw beth gets along with barbara wilson flex their muscle
and tell kirk your son's out of here what if they come and say you need to make a change in your staff? You can stay.
We will continue, but you need to make a change.
You need to bring in a defensive coach, a defensive coordinator,
whatever it is.
Could you see that happening?
And to do it against Fran McCaffrey, I would like to be a fly on that wall,
if that would play out.
Is this a realistic scenario at all?
Possibly.
I mean, I don't know.
I don't quite know the dynamics of his relationship with Beth. I don't know i i don't quite know the dynamic of his relationship with bets i don't
know i mean i know him and i know a way is could it happen sure and and you never know there may
be somebody on that staff that decides at the end of the year that they want to go some more
that could happen too very easily i mean in this world you know so college basketball everybody's
moving somewhere it seems like so you know i i more at, I would like to see him get a defensive coach.
I remember a couple years ago when a certain former Western Illinois coach
was on the market after he left Nebraska.
I thought he would have been a perfect addition for France to have Jim Molinari.
So if you can find somebody like that, I think, I think he does that. But again, you know, like I said, we're, I,
I'll just be curious to see where this program goes at the end of the year,
what, what brand does, what, you know, what the, what, you know, just,
I will be curious to see what comes next because I do think there's changes
coming, but it'll be, it'll be,
and I do think it'll be sooner rather than later, but how sooner I can tell you.

Thanks for being with us
and thanks for making Locked on Hawkeyes
your first listen every day
so the Iowa women
on a three game losing streak
they face off here tonight
on Thursday evening
against Nebraska Nebraska team that comes in
winners of three in a row now they're not
overly impressive wins beating Penn State
going down the road to beat Rutgers the one one in the middle, the win against Michigan State at home,
that was impressive. It's a pretty good Michigan State team, and they were able to get that one
there. You look at this Nebraska team, they're built a little bit differently than they've been
in the past years. Maybe not the same kind of top-end talent, but a really consistent team
against the top-end teams, the USC's, UCLA's, they have struggled.
But this is a good squad.
Iowa currently is 34th in the net ranking.
Nebraska is right behind them at number 35.
And for the Iowa women, they need to find a way to push those right buttons.
And I think there's a lot of people maybe a little bit concerned about Jan Jensen in year number one of this regime.
We're seeing many of the same problems continue to manifest themselves. The turnovers continue to
be an issue, not as large of an issue, but it's still not great. The inability to put this squad
together with the youngsters playing together with the veterans. Lucy Olsen came in. I was so
surprised just not to see her out there as much as I anticipated in the game
against Indiana and kind of where that goes from here.
This was your stopgap, right?
Until the youngsters were ready before Aaliyah Guyton coming off that ACL injury was ready
to take over the point guard role.
Addie Deal coming in next season.
Those kind of players, that's what this is going to be.
And you got Lucy Olsen sitting over on the sideline.
The veterans have not stepped up in the way that you hope.
But it's different.
It's different for a falter now playing without the stars that she did the last couple of years.
And having the game plan be more arrived around her.
Addison and Grady just hasn't taken that step.
And is it time to take the training wheels off of Ava Hyden and give her 25 minutes a game?
These are the buttons that Jan Jensen needs to push and needs to figure out.
Stremlow has been really good at times.
You're excited about her future.
It's a group of freshmen that's a really talented group.
And you look at these four players, you get really excited about what they are
and what they're going to be for this program.
And this is going to be the new backbone of what Iowa basketball is going to be going forward.
However, are they ready for it now?
Take the training wheels off.
I think it's something that needs to be considered.
Need to play with that passion right away.
And at home, they can't dig themselves a deficit.
Look, the crowd can't do it all, right?
And we've seen that a couple of times now.
Against Maryland.
And the Maryland loss was not as frustrating because Maryland's really good.
Indiana's pretty good.
They're okay.
Lose at home, though.
I don't know.
You lose this one, I think the conversation really starts to change.
Because after this, this is the easier part of the schedule for Iowa.
It's going to get really difficult coming up here
in just a few weeks.
So after this game against Nebraska,
they go on the road for their West Coast trip,
including Oregon and Washington.
Both those teams are solid.
Both those teams, Oregon on the right side
of the bubble right now, Washington a bubble team,
probably on the wrong side of it at this point.
You get a breather against Northwestern, and then you got USC. That USC matchup with them coming in that are playing
incredibly well. You got to go to Minnesota. The Gophers have been a huge surprise. Then the return
trip with Nebraska. Rutgers, there's a win. But here's how it finishes up for the Iowa women.
At Ohio State, the Buckeyes haven't lost Ohio state. The bucket guys haven't lost.
UCLA comes in.
UCLA has a loss.
You go to Michigan.
Who's a tournament team.
And then you wrap up against Wisconsin.
That should be a win.
You go through that schedule and maybe we'll do that.
In fact,
rapid reaction after Thursday night,
we'll be back with you and get you some thoughts on the matchup against Nebraska.
We might go through and kind of W and L this one and put themselves and see what they're
going to be.
