Starting point is 00:00:54 Football Playoff is here and you don't want to miss a moment of the action. The College Football Playoff presented by Allstate begins with four first round games, December 20th and 21st on ESPN, ABC, TNT, and Max. Well, someday, hopefully the Iowa Hawkeyes will be involved with just that. We got a lot of portal news to get into today. We'll break that down. The weekend that was in basketball as we're just getting back at it and apologies to everybody out there, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:01:23 That's what we strive to do. It's not been the case this week. I have been out sick. I had a couple of doctor's visits the last couple of days. Everything appears to be all good. No worries there, but getting you a show has proven to be more difficult than I anticipated. Sat down a couple of times and just was not able to give you certainly the content that you all deserve. So we're going to ease our way into the week here a little bit later on. We're going to get plenty out there. Got a big game coming up Saturday for the Iowa men's basketball team against Utah. It's not a must win, but it's an important game for Iowa to get another quality win on that resume
Starting point is 00:01:57 and the non-conference. I think that is going to be incredibly helpful. Get a neutral court victory, the one they already have against Washington State. You's a that's a semi-neutral game if you will more of a home game even away from carver hawkeye arena over there in the mark so this would be a good one uh in sioux fall saturday night i know a lot of the people over western i were excited about that we'll get a rapid reaction podcast to you uh after that one finishes up on saturday but played a little bit of catch up here and boy, it feels like, you know, when we go from the routine of doing this every single day and talking Hawkeyes every single day, it's crazy how much we miss. And there's going to be things that kind of pop up that normally we talk about on a day-to-day basis, and we'll certainly get into that.
Starting point is 00:02:37 But the biggest story right now is where we kick off the conversation today. Elliot Clough, by the way, also going to join us from Hawkeye Beacon, part of the Rivals Network, coming up here in just a few minutes. But Isbo Pribula, and the Penn State quarterback who, of course, the backup to Drew Aller. Us as Hawkeye fans have seen him, and he's good. He's talented. He can move the ball. You go back to that game against Wisconsin. He was a big part of the second half. Very athletic quarterback. When you look at Pribula, the first thing that you see is the running ability. This is a stepped up version of what Iowa has in Brendan Sullivan, an athletic kid, a guy that is a run first type of quarterback. But the thing with Pribula that excites you is you look at him
Starting point is 00:03:24 and you look at him and you look at him as a passer and there appears to be more there. Now, again, I say appears because if you look just straightly statistically at somebody like Brennan Sullivan, you say, oh, that looks pretty good. And it does on the surface. But then you hear kind of the reason and the way that the offense is catered and reading defenses and the big picture things about a quarterback. And that remains a concern with Brennan Sullivan. On the other hand, when you're talking about Pribula, those concerns are not as accelerated. We'll put it that way. And you look across the country, Bo Pribula would be starting at 120 programs in the country right now, 110, a lot. He'd be a starter at a lot of different places.
Starting point is 00:04:09 And earlier this week, it was announced that Drew Aller is coming back for his final season of eligibility. At least that's his plan as of right now. We'll see if that actually plays out, but it's very simple. Bob Pribula wants to play. So he started off by visiting Missouri, then visiting Iowa. Next up, he's got visits with Central Florida, with Scott Frost down there now, and Indiana. And you think Indiana football, well, they had a great season this year, but is it sustainable? Here's one thing to remember. And a lot of this comes down to the finances.
Starting point is 00:04:46 And we talk about this a lot. And the NIL funding, donate to the swarm, is Mark Cuban is now writing checks for Indiana, his alma mater. Not just Indiana basketball, but Indiana football. And that's what it takes. Now, the Kraus family, if they didn't love soccer, Italian soccer so much, maybe we'd have a sugar daddy like that. But it's not the case.
Starting point is 00:05:11 And until a person like that steps forward, this is where we are. So it takes money. And it's going to take money to get a guy like this. It's not to say that Iowa is cash-strapped in comparison to their brethren, but this is the new way of the world, and we'll talk about that coming up here with Elliott. Like I mentioned, going to be a little bit slow going here. We're going to try to keep some things going.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I talked to Elliott earlier in this week, and my voice was even raspier at that time when I talked to Elliot about everything going on in the recruiting world. So when we first talked, it was before it become official that he was coming on campus. So if you're wondering kind of the ins and outs of the pre-bula conversation, that's a little background there as I talked to Elliot a little bit early on. We're going to take a quick time out. We'll continue here. Hear from Elliot Cluff and talk about a whole bunch of guys in the portal. It's not just
Starting point is 00:06:05 quarterback. Remember, this Iowa football team, they have a lot more that they need to do. Offensive tackle, we've talked about that position of need. Cornerback, potentially safety. There's some safety prospects now Iowa's looking more. And the defensive line, I think a depth piece and maybe
Starting point is 00:06:21 even a starter, both defensive end and defensive tackles are things that they're looking for. Easier said than done. And of course, wide receiver. And it goes without saying in Iowa, getting involved with some wide receivers as well with some big time offers. There's a lot to be done. Quarterback is a headliner. That is the new reality. We'll talk more with Elliot Clough from Rivals as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. rivals as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Starting point is 00:09:09 PrizePix, run your game. Elliot Clough is joining us from the rival site. It's Hawkeye beacon.com. Good. Get Elliot back on the program. Once again, with a lot going on, it's transfer portal season. As Elliot joined this Elliot,
Starting point is 00:09:38 thanks for carving out a couple of minutes for us here today. I know an incredibly busy time for you. How you been doing? Keeping up, getting all that caffeine in you. I was just going to say that Trent, lots of caffeine over the last couple of weeks, dining day with, with high school kids. And of course, uh, recruiting my big thing, uh, at rivals being the lead analyst. Recruiting analysts, but, um, yeah, lots of caffeine caffeine lots of coverage of basketball on top of it
Starting point is 00:10:09 it's been a busy few weeks man well it's ramping up again after hank brown makes his decision that he's going to be a hawkeye three years of eligibility the auburn transfer showed some good signs and certainly a guy that looks like a developmental piece so we'll see if he's going to go in there fighting for the job. In fact, let's start right there. I know you had an opportunity to talk with Hank Brown. Your takeaway, the conversation with him and coming in and a chance to compete for the job at quarterback for Iowa with three years of eligibility. Right. So, Hank, a takeaway from my conversation.
Starting point is 00:10:40 I think the main one was looking back at it. I think the main one was looking back at it. I think the red flag for those of us who are interested in Hank Brown and what he could bring to Iowa are those three interceptions he threw against Arkansas. And I asked him about it, and he was just straight up and honest and said, you know, I saw it as an opportunity to show my resiliency and that I wouldn't let bad half of football determine who I am or what I can be as a quarterback. And that really impressed me, to be quite honest.
Starting point is 00:11:08 You know, another takeaway that I thought was kind of cool is being from Wheaton, Illinois, same hometown as Chuck Long, same hometown as Tim Lester, is his parents went to, I think, high school with Tim Lester. So they know him going all the way back. I think high school with Tim Lester. So they know him going all the way back. So some funny connections and relationships. It's funny how some things like this pan out like that. But watching the limited film that you can get from his two starts at Auburn,
Starting point is 00:11:41 he's a pretty prototypical three-star recruit, right? I mean, he only had one year starting between his junior and senior year at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville but I mean you see the flashes of arm talent he's got some some pretty pretty solid skills when it comes to the deep ball I actually I personally like his ability to run the zone read and RPOs. That was some things that he did well under Hugh Freeze. And of course, like you mentioned, I do think it's a developmental piece. I do think that they are going to dip back into the portal. But he kind of falls into that group, to me, with Jimmy Sullivan, who's coming in in the spring, and Ryan Fitzgerald in this 2025 class of this is the real test group where we
Starting point is 00:12:25 see what Tim Lester can do long-term in terms of development. Of course, did decently well with, with Kate McNamara and, and Brendan Sullivan and Jackson Stratton this season, when putting them on the field kind of emergency situations for Jackson, of course, but I I'm really intrigued to see if Tim Lester,
Starting point is 00:12:43 what Tim Lester can do over, you know, a multiple years with with guys like with guys like Hank Brown, guys like Jimmy Sullivan, Ryan Fitzgerald. So it's not over a quarterback. And you've maintained that reading over at the message board at Hawkeye Beacon that you didn't think Iowa was done after Hank Brown. Now, a lot of people, I think the speculation was maybe a one year stopgap guy, a guy to come in right away, compete with Stratton and Sullivan for the starting job, a one-year of eligibility guy. And all of a sudden, here comes Bo Pribula. And this turned into a big conversation as Penn State awaits SMU in the college football playoff. But he wants to find a home. We know that Drew Allard's going to come back for another season.
Starting point is 00:13:21 So Pribula's in the transfer portal. And with it, he's not going to be part of the Penn State program. And I was involved in this one. Now I was surprised in seeing some of the names that are involved with him, Missouri, Central Florida. Missouri's got some money down there, obviously in the SEC and what they can do with some of their in-state things as it pertains to NIL. But there's another one. He goes to the portal like, yeah, well, that'd be nice, but no shot. I was working to get a visit. So tell us the latest on Bo Pribula at Penn State. Yeah, you pretty much just laid it out. Doing what they can to get a guy like this, obviously that'd be huge. And that'd be another testament, again, to Tim Lester's ability to recruit Tyler Barnes in that job as chief of
Starting point is 00:14:06 staff there with an in general manager with the Hawkeyes but yeah I mean to get a guy like that who's got Big Ten experience whether you know it's limited it's not limited to the degree that Hank Brown has in the SEC of course but to get a guy like that who's been at a program like Penn State who's been under Andy Kotelnicki for this year, worked with Drew Aller, man, that'd be huge to get a guy like that. And just to get him on campus would be a major win, in my opinion. Like you mentioned, other programs involved, there's going to be money involved here, of course. It makes you curious, at least it makes me curious, as to how deep Kirk is willing to go into things like this after how awry everything went with Cade McNamara
Starting point is 00:14:51 and the amount of money that was invested into him and bringing him in. And then you look at a guy like Caleb Brown, who's now at UAB, where he just committed. So I guess I'm just curious as to how much Kirk is willing to invest into the portal still. Even given a talent like Bo Pribula, that would be an awesome addition to a program that's still working to figure out the offense. And, you know, I think it would be it would be advantageous for them to get a wide receiver or two out of the portal before they get Fribula because then they have something to pitch. Oh, we get this guy who's FCS, who's G5, who was super productive at this level. Now you have a new weapon. You're not just looking at
Starting point is 00:15:34 Jacob Gill and Reese Vander Zee. You're looking at another guy that's done it, that's put up numbers. And I think that would be a really positive pull for them regarding Pribula in the portal, which just about to drop some intel. They are getting another visitor here coming up this weekend as a wide receiver. It's in the works. Lots of things are in the works for the portal for the Hawkeyes. Yeah, definitely staying busy on that front. There's the kid from Northern Illinois.
Starting point is 00:16:00 How about the Idaho kid? He's got a big-time resume, obviously, coming in. Watch a little bit of that game Friday night as they were unfortunately run off the field by Montana State as I was holding a Vandal Plus 14 ticket. But that aside, a couple of guys that – and we're not just talking about Iowa going out there and kind of getting the leftovers, if you will.
Starting point is 00:16:19 They're competing with some big schools for some of these wide receivers, and we know they need an influx at that position. Yeah, yeah. You look at a guy like Dwyer and that's exactly what what you're talking about exactly what you'd want for for Iowa to go get because coming from an FCS program at least for right now last I checked Iowa was his only power four offer I've got to check up on that again but um same with with Trayvon Rudolph from Northern Illinois for right now. And that's kind of the epitome of what you're looking at in the portal. Guys who know that he can produce at a higher level but only has the G5 offers,
Starting point is 00:16:53 the maybe high-level FCS offers. And when you're looking at guys like that, maybe, I mean, for frame of reference, a player from, let's say, UNI has the opportunity to go to Iowa. It is just a completely different world of college football. So you're offering these guys the free meals, not like they don't get that at UNI, but the free meals, the opportunity to make some legitimate money, to have the top-tier facilities,
Starting point is 00:17:18 to be treated like you're a professional athlete in essence now. So you have so much more to offer to these guys who are the fcs who are the g5 because you can give them much more money than they could make at those lower levels and you kind of have i don't know if shock value is the right way to put it but the shock value of moving up to these higher programs the big 10 the sec stuff like that so that's that's the level of receiver you want to go at because, I mean, well, the Caleb Brown experience didn't go the way you wanted it to. And chances are, I think players of that level are looking at the lack of production
Starting point is 00:17:55 and saying, eh, but when you get a guy from the FCS, you get a guy from the G5 that can come up, experience all those things, and maybe be the person to break through and be a super productive receiver for a program like Iowa, then you start to build that resume, right? You start to build a little bit of equity in recruiting. You start to build a little bit of equity in the portal, and you potentially start to land those bigger names. But yeah, at CSG5, that's where Iowa's got to be right now.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I want more on the recruiting front and a little basketball to wrap up. We're talking with Elliot Clough from Rivals, HawkeyeBeacon.com. Ethan Ottawa, the big, literally, figuratively, offensive lineman from Rice, 6'6", 355 pounds. He's a monster, and he's got a lot of people after him, but he was originally slated to visit Oklahoma. He visited the Iowa City instead. What's the latest on the big offensive tackle and help solidify that left tackle spot? That's going to be another spot. That's a guy that's going to be highly coveted, lots of money going to be thrown around. So remains to be seen as to how things are going to pan out there.
Starting point is 00:18:57 He did leave Iowa City, was not committed when he left. And ultimately, I'm not entirely sure what the slate looks like from the visits for him but there are going to be some big programs involved you mentioned oklahoma that's a program that wanted him really bad they're not going to be the only one for a little while uh he was the number one offensive tackle the number one offensive lineman period in the portal for us over at rivals now he's number two he's a four-star prospect this guy has an nfl potential i mean he very well could have declared for the draft this year i'm assuming based on the body of work and what he was able to do only allowed one sack this season according to pff but this is a guy that is gonna is gonna
Starting point is 00:19:38 you know uh require probably a good chunk of change in order to land him. I did hear the visit went well in Iowa City. So that's a positive. The cautious optimism has to come from that. But at the same time, like I said, when you get guys like this on campus, I mean, to reference Iowa State for a second here, Chase Sowell, the receiver from East Carolina, got on campus and was like, this is where I want to be. He had three or four other visits set up.
Starting point is 00:20:05 That didn't happen with Ethan Oneonwa. So there's a little bit of cautious optimism. It went well, but it's not over. Lots to be seen regarding Ethan Oneonwa. But, you know, a little bit of optimism for you there. All right. Coming off the week of Cyhawk Week in Basketball, E. Elliott, let's jump in.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Just a quick hit on each disappointing loss for the women. Then on Sunday, as turnovers again rear its ugly head. I mean, is it simple as that? They have to figure out the turnovers and working against pressure if they're going to be a team at least competing, you know, for like a top four seed and potentially hosting in the first couple of rounds. It feels as simple as that to me. How about you on the women's side?
Starting point is 00:20:43 Yeah, I'm in the same boat, Trent. You know, when you've got all those young faces, lots of freshmen on the team that are contributing right away, which is great, but they're still learning how to be college basketball players, right? And then you look at Lucy Olsen, who's just joining a new roster of that probably, well, almost definitely their best player. And again, new roster, new faces, that's just kind of what you're going to run into. New coach on top of it. I'm sure they're doing some different things than they did under Lisa Bluter.
Starting point is 00:21:10 So yeah, I really do think it's pretty much that simple. Whether they figure it out sooner rather than later, I would say so. That would be my guess just because of the leadership of Jan Jensen and the history of success in the program. And you look at those young freshmen, man, I'm really impressed by Taylor Stremlow. because of the leadership of Jan Jensen and the history of success in the program. And you look at those young freshmen, man, I'm really impressed by Taylor Stremlow, by Aaliyah Guyton and their ability, what they've done so far at the guard spot. Aaliyah Guyton hitting that massive shot at the end of the Iowa State game, the dagger. And then Taylor Stremlow causing a turnover there at the end that more or less
Starting point is 00:21:44 really put them in the position to win that game so yeah I I'm expecting them to figure it out do I think they'll necessarily be a top four seed come tournament time uh that remains to be seen a lot of basketball to be played yet but definitely definitely got to shore up those turnovers because you know you don't have 30 turn turnovers against Tennessee you probably win that game right same to be said against Michigan State. No doubt. Hey, out of time for today.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Elliot, always appreciate your time for joining us. We'll talk to you again soon down the road. And get that caffeine going, all right? A little more coffee for you. Awesome. Thanks so much, Trent. Elliot Clough joining us. HawkeyeBeacon.com, part of the Rivals Network.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Big thank you to Elliot for hopping aboard with us as we make our way through and as you can tell, battling a little bit of that illness. We continue here, Locked On Hawkeyes. Let's take a peek forward, kind of the week ahead. Set the scene as we make our way through the week and what's ahead. It's finals week. That means the teams are off until
Starting point is 00:22:40 the weekend. Iowa men and women along with the wrestling team and everything else going on in the land of athletics. We continue on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Today's episode of Locked On Hawkeyes is brought to you by the College Football Playoff. Look, it's that time of year. The College Football Playoff is back. And with the newly expanded 12-team format,
Starting point is 00:23:06 it's guaranteed to be bigger and better than ever, bringing you all the hard-hitting and high-flying excitement that you love. TNT sports coverage of the college football playoff begins December 21st, starting with the college football playoff kickoff show presented by AT&T. It'll start at 10 a.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Central Time here for us in the Central Time Zone, leading to our first matchup, SMU, the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, battling the Penn State Nittany Lions at noon. Then the Clemson Tigers look to upset the Texas Longhorns in a showdown at 4 o'clock Eastern, 3 o'clock Central. Don't miss a moment of the action.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Watch the college football playoff presented by Allstate live on TNT, TruTV, TBS, and Max. All right, Trent Conner back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockeddown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We're making our way back into it. We're battling through. We're going to be tough.
Starting point is 00:24:15 We're going to finish strong. Let's finish strong like Iowa looks to finish off the non-conference portion of their schedule strong. And it'll start for the women's basketball team coming up on Friday evening. So here comes little old UNI, right? The Panthers, little brother to many. I'll remember this is also a UNI team that beat Iowa State. They're pretty good. Not great. They had an injury to one of their better post players in Befele that really impacted them. In fact, that happened at the beginning of the night, but they're quick. Maya McDermott called a ton of her games in high school at Johnston. She's lightning quick. She's not tall by any means, but she can beat anybody off the bounce. Got to play her physically, and if her shot's going, look out,
Starting point is 00:25:00 as Iowa State learned when she put up 37 against them. One thing I will at least lean a little bit of concern about is these turnovers that continue to pile up, and some of the press-breaking strategies that Iowa's employing are just hideous. I'm baffled at times watching what they're trying to do. Just clear the press. It's bad, really bad. It was one thing against that Tennessee team, but then to have it happen again against Michigan State, it's time to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Kind of out of excuses now. You've lost two games because of your inability to not be pressure. You've got to be able to do something else. And if there isn't an escape hutch, this is going to be what teams are going to do against them all season long. Because with you and I, they've got speed. They've got some quickness. This is going to be what teams are going to do against them all season long. Because with you and I, they got speed.
Starting point is 00:25:47 They got some quickness. They're going to press. They're going to do those kind of things, I believe, on Friday night against the Hawks. How about the announcement as well? Kaitlyn Clark going to have her number retired. We'll talk about this a little bit more, hopefully in a podcast later in the week.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Coming up, though, it will be happening on 2-2 or 22. Then that leads into more social media fighting because apparently South Carolina also is retiring Asia Wilson's jersey that day. I can't. I can't with the back and forth. I mean, I'm sick, I'm tired, and I just can't with the ridiculous nature that this thing goes. But what we do know, Caitlin will be honored on February 2nd against USC with Juju Watkins in town. Great to be able to see a matchup. But that aside, it'll be a cool moment.
Starting point is 00:26:44 I was there for Meg Augustinson when her jersey was retired. Really cool. I was there for Luka Garza. Those are really cool moments. They really are. And as somebody that doesn't get to nearly as many basketball games as I would like, I'm really happy that I had those experiences. Now, the experience for this one is going to be a little bit different.
Starting point is 00:27:04 happy that I had those experiences. Now, the experience for this one's going to be a little bit different because less than an hour after I was announced, the get-in price was already up to $750 just to get in for a single. Don't think I'll be able to make that one work or certainly get my daughter in there or something like that. Probably not going to happen. But if you can, if you got the means, congratulations, tip your ball cap and enjoy it. It not going to happen. But if you can, if you got the means, congratulations. Tip your ball cap and enjoy it. It's going to cost you, but it's worth it to you. Absolutely make it happen. Should be a great environment.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I think you'll be watching that one on TV. Thanks for being with us here today. Oh, men's basketball. See, again, my mind is a million different miles. Well, talked about earlier, Saturday against Utah. We'll have an instant reaction for that one. We'll talk about that game a little bit more. We'll break down a little bit deeper.
Starting point is 00:27:47 The Iowa, you and I women's matchup, a lot going on. I'm just playing catch up, trying to keep my head above water, keeping myself out of the hospital. We'll be good to go. Thanks for being with us. And thanks for making lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We'll talk to you again tomorrow. Go Hawks.
