All right, let's get into it.
Kurt Ferentz Press Conference in the rearview mirror.
We got a lot going on.
We got some Hawkeye basketball to talk about.
Iowa back in the hardwood tonight as they take on USC upstate okay
not real exciting but we'll talk a little bit about that and what we'd like to see in the matchup
we got Scott Dockerman also joining us from the athletic a lot of Iowa football talk with Doc
coming up here in just a little bit but we open up with the Iowa football press conference just
wrapped up a little bit ago and some thoughts from that one after Kirk Ferentz met the beat writers over in Iowa City.
Obviously, the biggest question mark remains about the quarterback position, what it's going to look like.
As we've talked about, Jackson Stratton is going to be the starter.
Kirk mentioned that after the game on Saturday against Maryland, that they're going to start with Jackson Stratton.
And everything that he said today continued on that point. Now it was brought up. Are they going to maybe go with the quarterback
rotation? So we did find out that Brendan Sullivan is back in minimum practicing.
Kirk said that he looked pretty good. I think he was surprised maybe about how well he was looking
coming off that pretty substantial ankle injury, how he was moving around out there and kind of taking things a step further.
I think he's going to be a big part of the plans.
I mean,
you go back to last week and if you didn't see the picture,
Tom Kickard had a picture of the backup for Saturday,
Marco Linus,
the Marco Linus was going to be the guy that had to go in there.
He's a quarterback.
Good.
He's not Max white who was well quarterback in high school not Max White, who was a quarterback in high school,
or Girardi, who was a quarterback in high school. He's been practicing that position.
He's got a broken hand. So he's got this club on his left hand, and that's what it is. It's a club.
But remember, if you play football, you can't have a cast on there. You can't have a hard cast. You
can't think of the way you think of a cast. So they have to put a soft cast, and then they have
to wrap it up, and they have to tape it up. And he couldn't take a snap with two hands.
The ball would just bound off of this big cast that he had on his left hand.
So if he had to go in the game, he could go under center.
He was going to have to go strictly out of shotgun,
and basically one hand the snap.
That's what they were dealing with a week ago.
Now you get Brendan Sullivan back out there.
And if emergency strikes, or I would
anticipate that Jackson Stratton is just struggling, that Sullivan's going to be the guy.
Now, the Cade McNamara one continues to be, I believe, confounding. The week that we went
through last week, the inability it goes from, well, he's back practicing. We find out one day
later, he goes from practicing. Now he's not
traveling. Has he left the team? What does that mean for NIL payments? I mean, we had so many
different angles to this and it was a bad look. But if there was something where Cade McNamara
was not able to travel because of the concussion, Cade McNamara had a statement. I still believe it
was telling that it came from him. It came from his camp. It didn't come in a university release. They knew about these rumors. They knew about the rumblings.
They knew about the conversation that was happening. And that's what we were doing too.
It was a conversation with the information that we had. We had a conversation about what was
happening and it was a bad look. He comes out with the statement McNamara. Then Iowa says,
well, the way Kirk termed it,
he was cleared to practice but not cleared to play.
Well, there's no travel this week.
They'll be playing at home.
I still believe that Cade McNamara has thrown his last pass
in a Hawkeye uniform.
I don't believe, even if Jackson Stratton,
ineffective, pulled or gets injured,
and Brandon Sullivan isn't able to go.
I don't believe that Cade McNamara would be the one out there.
We'll see what it looks like on Friday.
Night game, can it going to be cold?
By the way, wear your black.
Though it's not an official blackout, there wasn't a designation like on your ticket,
anything like that.
Kirk also mentioned that it's going to be chilly.
That red's going to pop in the stands.
It should be a fun environment.
It's cold. It's chilly. It's going to be rough. That red's going to pop in the stands. It should be a fun environment. It's cold.
It's chilly.
It's going to be rough.
Get a little hot chocolate, Kirk said.
I'd probably go more.
Some whiskey.
Whatever it is you need to warm yourself up, though.
Should be an interesting night at Kinnick Stadium.
A couple other things.
He mentioned the walk-ons.
And as we're going to see the change in the scholarship limits and everybody basically being on scholarship and the changes.
So Iowa football normally has 120, 125 guys overall on the roster.
Some of them are walk-ons.
When you get to August camp, not everybody is invited to August camp.
That's something there.
But this is going to lead to some difficult decisions.
Putting this roster together and the walk-on program that has been so fruitful
for Iowa. You look at the seniors, the 23 guys that are
going to be honored on Senior Day. And you go through
that list and you see all those guys and all those different players.
10 of them began their career of the 23 as walk-ons
on the football program,
which is crazy in its own right.
23 guys going through there, and that's what you're going to be left with.
Speaking of that, I want to mention these guys
that are going to be honored at Senior Day.
Wyatt Black.
I think everybody who every dares know my respect of that difficult position
playing in the middle of the Iowa defense and what it takes playing D-tack in Hawaii Black,
just how good he has been.
Sebastian Castro probably hasn't been the final season
that he wanted, but boy, he's given us so many great moments,
so many just excellent, hard-hitting plays.
Sebastian Castro has been so fun to watch.
Jeremy Chaplin, as a guy, I don't know.
I know him from the roster, and that's it.
But Kirk mentioned him, what he does on the academic side,
and yes, that still matters.
Connor Colby, much maligned early in his career.
He wasn't tackled.
Turned himself into a really good guard, though.
Deontay Craig had the big moments in another one.
Maybe the senior year hasn't gone the way that we expected.
He's a guy that showed ability to get to the quarterback.
Tough guy, up front, playing that physical.
Nick DeYoung played his best game as a Hawkeye last week.
Not even close.
Comes back for a final year, doesn't play as much as he wants.
He was excellent.
Luke Elkin, we don't talk about him because he snaps it back there,
comes down on coverage, makes tackles, makes plays.
He does what you want him to do.
You don't have to screw around with your long snapper.
Tyler Ellsbury, out there because of injuries, did a great job every single time. Didn't matter if it was guard, center, love Tyler Elsberry.
And those are the depth pieces. Speaking of depth pieces, Kyler Fisher, another guy around for a
long time, making plays out there. They're going 4-3. He's out helping there, doing special teams
duties. Jamari Harris didn't end the way we wanted, but Jamari was able to come back after losing two
games a year ago because of the gambling suspension. Injuries the year before that go out there and have an impactful year and really
take a step forward. Great to see out of Jamari Harris. Jamison Hines, guy that had to play
cornerback for a little bit. Walk-on kid, hard worker out there playing for the Hawkeyes. I'm
sure that's something that dream come true for him. Jay Higgins, I don't know what more can be said about Jay Higgins.
Stud, backbone, just the embodiment of an Iowa football player.
Not to tuck your tail and run.
Stick it out.
Work hard.
And absolutely, Jay Higgins.
Love that guy as a Hawkeye.
And it's not just because of his dad, who's great in his own right.
It's about the football player Jay Higgins is and the guy that Jay Higgins is.
Ethan Hercut.
Talk about a guy building yourself into an impactful Big Ten player.
That's Hercut.
Nick Jackson.
We only got to see him for two years.
He is going to have a huge number of tackles in his career.
A guy that had to change positions, go from the middle outside and do it at a high level.
Logan Jones.
As athletic as you're going to find as an offensive lineman, absolutely impactful.
Another guy that changed positions,
goes from the D-line to the offensive line
and turned himself into, this year, a really good center.
Luke Lachey, battling injuries,
big-time plays throughout his career.
Always wanting a little bit more out of Luke Lachey,
but he's going to end, and how about his dad coming back?
I'm going to miss his first radio broadcast in a long time
to watch his son be honored on Senior Day.
He's going to miss Ohio State, Michigan, to be there for his son.
Hayden Large, another guy, one of those stories.
Comes out of nowhere, got the name Hayden.
Oh, that's awesome.
Andrew Lynch, kid here locally from Central Iowa,
got to play a little bit.
Cade McNamara, that's going to be a little bit different conversation,
I think, for McNamara and his legacy.
Mason Richmond played on a broken leg last year.
Another guy that just built himself into a solid Big Ten play.
Player Quinn Schulte, another one of those walk-on safety success stories.
Kane Weegean, love that one.
The speed that we see from him.
Alec Wick, just on and on and on.
Those are your seniors.
Those will be the guys that are honored.
And different stories for all of them.
Kirk loves those stories.
And we definitely got a lot out of that.
Scott Dockerman will join us
as we continue Locked on Hawkeyes,
a lot of Iowa football conversation
with the doc, including the quarterback.
Situation from his perspective.
We'll do that as we continue Locked on Hawkeyes.

Scott Dockerman
covers college football for the
Athletic, the Big Ten, Iowa.
All three of them. And he joins
us. Hello, Doc Trent and Ken. Thank
you for coming on. How are you, Scott Dockerman?
I am great. How
are you? Doing well. Obviously
I want to start with Iowa.
We'll peek ahead to Friday night, Black Friday, Kinnick Stadium.
Should be a fun environment.
I guess since you've covered Iowa as long as you have,
and it may be premature because there's still one game left,
just Caleb Johnson and where his place amongst the best Iowa running backs
of the Ferris tenure since you've been
covering Iowa football.
It's tough to do. I get it.
Everything changes, etc.
But Caleb Johnson's got to be in every
one of those conversations. What a special player.
Oh,
for sure. I think
we're not in recently biased
territory here to say that he is
at or near the top of the list when it comes to Iowa running backs under Ferentz or, frankly, any era.
What he's been able to do is special.
It's unique.
And his running style will take him into a massive payday come spring.
He's just an elite back in his vision and his speed and the effortless way that he runs is just different than what we've seen before from that position. year over year, and I think you've got to thank Lavelle Betts for this, is now he's better at delivering a blow and extending himself,
whether that's through a stiff arm or running through contact,
that sometimes it wasn't quite there in the past. And I think that the scheme has allowed him to really show off his abilities.
And the offensive line has been terrific this year run
blocking so i think uh you know he to me and i covered sean green's 2008 year um i don't think
it's a legacy versus recency bias for me to say i think caleb johnson's a little bit better than
sean green was outstanding player and uh we'll be talking about him a lot i'm gonna have a feeling
coming up in march and april leading into the draft and where he falls with a bunch of good running backs.
And maybe a resurgence with Saquon coming back out there.
Doc, last week was a weird one.
The press conference on Tuesday.
The depth chart release with McNamara back on top Monday.
Then we get a report from CBS and 24-7.
McNamara is not going to be there.
Just all over the place.
Take us through last week from your perspective.
I know you and Chad had a lot to say on your guys' podcast about it.
And just the week that was, a statement then on Friday after the team had left,
not through the university, just a lot of angles with the saga of Cade McNamara.
Yeah, it's been one of the more interesting and unusual weeks that I can remember
from an Iowa standpoint because we're talking about a quarterback who practiced, you know, not a game, but he had practice last Sunday.
Then on Monday, he's on the depth chart.
And then Tuesday in Bizarro World, we don't know if he's going to play or if he's, you know know a member of the team and then um apparently you know according
to him that he started experiencing symptoms post-concussion symptoms on monday and and uh
then but did not show up to practice on tuesday or wednesday and uh so there was there's just a
lot of questions that were lingering and then you know, as the temperature started to rise in Iowa City and
elsewhere regarding the situation, and as you, you know, had mentioned, you know, I had a podcast
with Chad where we kind of offered informed speculation and kind of two veins. One is,
if he has a concussion, our prayers should be with him that he needs to get better. And if it's not
a concussion, then there needs to, you know And if it's not a concussion, then that's not exactly becoming
of an Iowa football player.
And it turned out Cade offered his own statement that was through representation
that really illuminated that he was still experiencing some post-concussion symptoms,
but it's his intention to be with the team against Nebraska this week.
And Iowa, because of the pushback on some of what Kirk had mentioned,
that he had been cleared to play, so therefore it was really in limbo,
they did try to clarify that on Friday night as to what was trying to go on
or what was going on.
to clarify that on Friday night as to what was trying to go on or what was going on.
And then Saturday, Kirk had a really interesting news conference that I listened to from my lovely home in North Liberty, Iowa.
Yeah, it was clearly different.
There's more there, I think.
Don't want to put words in your mouth.
It seems like there's more there.
I will be shocked if he's there on Friday night to play.
And even if he does, doesn't it seem like Jackson Stratton's got to be the guy now after what he did?
Didn't Kirk Ferentz come out and say that Stratton will start on Friday?
Yeah, he did.
He said he's the guy, and I believe him to be the guy.
And I would be very, very surprised kate mcnamara takes another step
with the hawkeyes um i just i think that's what i would strongly believe right now that
i don't see kate mcnamara ever doing that again and i think stratton will will be the guy that
they want uh it just shows you though that the uh the the juxtaposition of Nebraska having a five-star quarterback as a freshman out there on Friday night against Iowa having a walk-on that was fifth string going into camp.
And that they're going to be battling on the same gridiron in the season finale.
Where else in college football do you get something like that?
Love it.
If Cade McNamara doesn't play, doesn't go out there,
he's not going to go through senior day ceremonies, is he?
That's not going to be good.
I think we all know how that's going to go.
He has enough self-reflection and understanding.
That would not be a good look, right?
I think that that conversation has probably been had either yesterday or today
because, you know, I would be surprised if we don't have any kind of a,
you know, some sort of, I don't know, statement or, you know,
something tomorrow because, yes, I don't think that if he is not part of the team and is not going to play,
or what I mean by part of the team is he's not in uniform,
then I don't think it behooves him or anybody to walk.
It just isn't quite befitting of the moment.
But if he's welcomed back, if his concussion symptoms have cleared
and the team is hoping for him
to be a valuable member and he returns to good graces if there was any kind of issues
before, then I think that he should be out there.
But I don't know that that will be the situation.
Same with Jamari Harris?
Same with Jamari Harris.
I would probably register.
I would guess that he would not walk either the way things have shaken out over here.
Does that truly hurt him, Dawson? I don't think that's the case. When it comes to NFL evaluators,
if they see that he made a business decision not to play in his last two games of his collegiate career.
I don't think that that will be held against him.
Do you?
You know, here's where it's going to cause conversations
with every single scout and every single NFL team
when he is, you know, trying out or he's having meetings
or he's visiting or having workouts because they're
going to ask him, okay, tell me what happened here.
And if it's a situation where, you know what, I have significant injuries or serious injuries
or even just plain injuries during the course of my career, and it really prevented me from
playing at a level that I think would have helped the team.
really prevented me from playing at a level that I think would have helped the team.
And so therefore, I decided that I needed to step away the last couple of weeks.
Some teams will understand, some teams won't, but some teams will,
and they'll take that into consideration.
The timing of it is not real good, and he would have faced one of the best wide receivers in the country in Ty Felton,
and ultimately he stepped away and, you know, and whether or not he rejoins the team, I
kind of doubt it, but you know, that injuries do take a toll and sometimes you've got to
make those kinds of choices.
But I think the line in the sand has been throughout college football is that if you
are injured significantly enough to where it
really hampers your performance that there probably isn't a problem with that you may want to stick
with your team through that um you know i remember joey i think it was nick bosa who did that one at
one point or joey one of the two but then there but bowl games have been open season for people to pack off and go do this.
And I think I would be surprised if Caleb Johnson ultimately plays in the bowl game based on past experience.
And so with eight, nine days left in the regular season to step away,
way that's you know no matter unless your foot's hanging there by you know a bone marrow i think you i i think it's just kind of a tough time for for your teammates and your coaches to to let you
know you're there with them but anyway that's neither here nor there doc i think one thing
that is going to hurt him if he doesn't have kirk ferentz in his corner that could be a problem
and uh we know the the NFL organizations across all 32
respect that they have.
Speaking of Kirk Ferentz, you heard him after
the game. We've heard him throughout the week. We've heard him throughout
the season. The continued speculation
about his future.
The way these last week has gone,
is it pushing him any closer?
Again, this is all wild speculation,
but in the changing environment,
a rebuilding year likely next season.
Would this be enough for him to walk away after this year, hang it up and call it a career?
I think at this point, Trent, anything is open to interpretation.
And, you know, his age certainly puts him in that category where this kind of speculation is going to persist.
The circumstances have put it in that situation
where there's been so many changes.
And when you're talking about players that have their issues
and they don't maybe mesh with past situations,
I think you will have maybe some thoughts of,
okay, this is just getting a little bit too out of hand for me.
But then you also look at the other side and and that is you know this team is not achieved
its goals necessarily but it is seven and four with an opportunity to win eight and then then
the nine games um you have players like jay higgins who you know had a significant hamstring
injury that probably could have kept him out legitimately,
and instead chose to play and played really well and played really hard.
And you have a team that, with its back up against the wall, came out and won by a serious margin.
And those are the things that would probably bring him back, that he hasn't lost his team.
If anything, it's galvanized it.
And when you look at the issues going on and say, Wisconsin,
Iowa stuck to its principles and had some relative success,
not as much as people want, not as much as people think,
but still it's successful. And, and so I,
I don't know that this is the time to step away,
but I think he's earned the right to make call his shot.
And he's only a couple, he's only two games away from tying Woody Hayes.
That's just it.
And does that matter to him, do you think?
You know, I don't know that he would ever mention it in public until afterwards.
But, yeah, I think it does.
I mean, that is the, you know, you talked about one of the greatest college coaches of all time.
I don't think people would put Kirk in that category.
But I think he's a Hall of all time. I don't think people would put Kirk in that category, but I think you could use a Hall of Fame coach.
And that's a marker that you have to have longevity
and success in order to achieve.

Locked on Hawkeyes.
Thanks for making Locked on Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
So Iowa back on the hardwood tonight as they face off against USC Upstate.
Now, if you think this is a made-up team,
I don't under, I can definitely understand
how you wouldn't miss this.
So they come into this one two and six.
They're led by Marty Richter.
I remember him.
He was an assistant at Drake.
They lost their last time out by 24 to Queens.
Queens is now a D1 program. No, new york this is also a carolina school
um they have wins against southern wesleyan not a d1 team and something called piedmont
not a d1 team losses to wake forest vod, North Carolina State, UNC Wilmington, East Tennessee
State, and Queens. Well, they did hang around in the game against Wake Forest. Look, Iowa
should drill them. Ken Palm has this a 28-point spread. The point spread of FanDuel says the same.
29.5 is the number. But for this Iowa basketball team, what you look at is a squad that is incredibly banked up.
Owen Freeman's already missed a game this year.
Josh Dix has missed a game this year.
Trey Ducey, uh, Sayor, Sayor Treyori, excuse me.
He's missed two games at the beginning of the season.
They're banked up.
Peyton Sanford's not right.
He is physically not there.
One of 13 shooting.
Get healthy.
One thing in the past that Iowa's been so good most of the time in these games
is just drilling these opponents.
This needs to be one where you get up 30 and let the bench play.
And yeah, it might hurt your efficiency numbers a little bit,
but look, if that's the difference, Iowa beating
this team by 35 or 25,
if that's the difference between them being an NCAA
tournament team and not,
we got bigger issues here.
I believe in this team. I believe in this squad.
But now with a week off after this game
tonight, it's about health.
You have to be ready to
go because the next three after this one,
home for Northwestern, as close to a must-win
December conference game as you're going to have.
Iowa cannot afford to dig themselves a hole again.
Michigan, after that on the road, it's going to be tough.
And then, of course, the matchup against Iowa State.
You saw the athleticism that they play.
You've got a toss-up game against Utah later in December.
This is going to be an incredibly
difficult slog through the Big Ten this year.
You got a bunch of teams that are all basically the
same. And it's going to be about a hot
stretch. Iowa cannot afford
to lose to Northwestern at home.
They just can't.
So whatever it takes. You're going to beat
USC upstate.
Just find a way.
This squad, anything to concern you?
No, there really isn't.
Mr. Dean?
That's their best player?
Mr. Dean?
Okay.
Go out there.
Club them.
Get good feelings.
Let's see deeper on the bench.
Let's have Cooper Koch go off and score in double figures.
Let's give Riley Mulvey a few more minutes. Let's have Kupra Koch go off and score in double figures.
Let's give Riley Mulvey a few more minutes.
Let's do those kind of things.
That's what we're looking for out of this one.
Get the win.
Get healthy.
Get right.
And be ready to go next week against Northwestern.
Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.
