Starting point is 00:00:00 The Iowa women building for the future, a five-star Addy deal, has made her commitment to the Hawkeyes. One of the craziest rumors that I can remember in a long time. We got that for you. Plus the wise owl, the longest tenured man on the Hawkeye beat, John Boenkamp joins the show all today. Locked on Hawkeyes. You are locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Starting point is 00:00:53 It helps us get in front of more Hawkeye fans. Well, we got a lot to get into here today. Tons of basketball talk. We're going to get into a little bit of baseball as well. And John Boenkamp is going to join us here a little bit later on. John has been on the Iowa Hawkeye beat for many years. We're not going to teach him here, but he's been on for as long as anybody now on the Hawkeye beat.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Lots of great stories, lots of great insight, knows basketball incredibly well, an AP writer for a number of years with the Burlington Hawkeye. He was the top 25 voter for many of those seasons, both football and basketball-wise from the state of Iowa. He's been able to do that. He's gone through the committee selection process in the past for the NCAA tournament. It's always great insight from John Boenkamp,
Starting point is 00:01:36 the self-proclaimed wise owl, and he'll join us here in just a little bit. But a couple of news and notes to kick things off, including the commitment of Addie deal, a five-star guard from California. She made her commitment yesterday to the Iowa Hawkeye women's program. This is a big deal. The second highest rated recruit that Iowa has ever received in the,
Starting point is 00:01:57 at least era of, you know, how things go in basketball and what we see in the recruiting world going back or last 25 years, since the rivals scout those kind of places have become really commonplace in the world of recruiting this is as big as it gets outside of caitlin clark who is the number four player in her class which looking back is just crazy in its own right that she was not the top player in her class four years
Starting point is 00:02:20 back but uh here we are addy deal somebody that can handle it incredibly well, good handles, good size. I believe her brother is a player over at Grinnell College, so in California, how does that make sense? Sounded like Iowa and Ohio State were her two finalists, but made her commitment to the Iowa program. A huge deal as we look at the sustainability of this program. We touched on this a little bit yesterday during the show, talking about the potential of what this is going to look like going forward.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I was had a very successful women's program, not just during the Lisa Bluter era, but going back. See Vivian Stringer, Angie Lee, at least early in her tenure, and what it is today. It's a proud program that has done a lot of great things, but it's now gone to heights that we haven't seen before and playing for a national championship a season ago. Never got there before. Early 90s, they made a Final Four. We'll see Vivian Stringer as the playing for a national championship a season ago. Never got there before.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Early 90s, they made a Final Four. We'll see Vivian Stringer as the coach and a great team at that part. They've earned a number one seed before in her tenure. They were knocked off in the second round that year by Southwest Missouri State and Jackie Stiles. And why they were playing in Springfield, Missouri in that second round game, something I'll never be able to understand. But we're at Heights we haven't seen. Now it's about building on that, right?
Starting point is 00:03:25 It's about getting that program now where year in and year out, we know Iowa women's basketball is not just going to be good, good enough to make a tournament, but build on that. And they need to take this recruiting momentum and take it forward and be able to get these kind of players. And Deal certainly is that kind of player. The number one player in California, number 12 player overall from the ESPN rankings, a huge get for the women's program. And you look towards the future. Next year is going to be a whole lot different. And I think that the transfer portal is going to
Starting point is 00:03:53 have to be a part of what Iowa does next season. You have building blocks, obviously Hannah Stolke. We've seen what she's been able to do and what she's able to be. I think going forward, the monster performances that she's been able to put together this season. But I think they need to find a point guard for next year. Guyton is going to be coming off in ACL, the incoming freshman. We didn't see a whole lot out of Johnson this season to see if she's going to be able to be that kind of player. Is Taylor McCabe a point guard? Not likely. Don't see the handles there. Same thing for Feerbach. I think she's okay off the dribble. You know, maybe the best ball handler out of the returners next year might be Sydney Fulter, but she does so many other things,
Starting point is 00:04:28 and she's not a point guard. I think some kind of stopgap, a one- or two-year transfer type of player at the point guard position would make a whole lot of sense and something that Iowa needs to do. Now, in order to do that, you've got to be able to spend, and you've got to be able to go into the portal and have the money and the cash fund to make that happen. That means donating to the Swarm Collective. That means building up that bankroll. It's the new
Starting point is 00:04:49 reality in college sports. Love it or hate it, it is the reality, and the reality is here. Iowa not only had a transcendent player in Kaitlyn Clark, but they also were able to use that NIL money in other areas because the amount of money that she's been able to earn on her own in the NIL landscape, that's going to change, and that's going to be money that she's been able to earn on her own in the NIL landscape, that's going to change. And that's going to be something that the money's going to have to be there in order to get that high impact player that can go out there and play at a high level. So that's what you're looking at going there. We're going to talk a little bit more about men's basketball. One thing there is on the men's front, yes, bracketology for the NIT.
Starting point is 00:05:23 And it's crazy. There's a couple of different sites out there. One of them is just nitbracketology.com. And they currently have Iowa as a number two seed. That means hosting in the first round of the NIT and potentially the second round as well. Well, remember, we're going to have games at Carver Hawkeye Arena. We're going to have games that'll be played there for the women. That means if Iowa is going to host
Starting point is 00:05:46 an NITT game in the first round, it's either going to have to be very quick because the quick turnaround, the NCAA likes to get their hands on the building, on the arena, be able to add all the signage, all the extra things that go along with it, have control.
Starting point is 00:06:00 There's also the potential that we could also see what are those play-in matchups, the opening round matchups where we've seen that the last couple of years now filtrate itself into the women's bracket, not 64. They also have 68 teams that advance into the NCAA tournament. And because of that, if I was a number one seed, the potential that we see two number 16 seeds play off to get Iowa in the first round, in the round of 64. That is a potential.
Starting point is 00:06:26 It maybe makes it a little bit more difficult. You go back to the 90s, they played games at the Markover in the Quad Cities. That was something that happened, and it was a great environment over there. Does Iowa go that route? Do they go to Des Moines? Is that a potential? Will the NCAA and the NIT selection committee allow them to do that? Still a lot of questions.
Starting point is 00:06:43 We'll get into that and a whole lot more coming up here with John Boenkamp. In fact, let's get John in here and talk a little bit more about some Iowa basketball topics with John Boenkamp. He joined myself and Ted Miller, my radio partner, earlier today. Have that for you here today as we talk a lot of Iowa hoops, and there is this crazy rumor out there. And it's just that, a rumor, but we got to tackle this thing. One of the wildest rumors that I can remember in Iowa basketball
Starting point is 00:07:08 and as it pertains to one of the guys that went through senior day festivities on Sunday against Illinois. We'll do that as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Passion, drive, and patience. What brings home the winning trophy is also what keeps your ride or die alive ebay motor says everything you need to maintain your vehicle and leveled up to peak performance from superchargers roof racks exhaust kits led headlights and more whether you're into

Time to welcome in John Boenkamp from the Associated Press and HawkeyeNation.com. Let's look back before we look forward. Start with the women.
Starting point is 00:08:29 The championship game, the comeback in the final two and a half minutes against Nebraska. Kaitlyn Clark, some of the passes that she had late in that game. The blocked shots in overtime by Gabby Marshall. It's what we've talked about a lot. It can't just be Kaitlyn. And throughout this tournament, everybody seemed to be stepping out. Even minus Molly Davis. I think Ken and I both have jumped in here the last couple of weeks.
Starting point is 00:08:49 This team's got a real shot. I'm not just getting to the second weekend doing those kind of things. This team's going to be right there. Where are you at right now with this team? And can we talk about six more games still left for Kaitlin Clark and the rest of this crew? Yeah, I think so. Because, I mean, like you said, because everybody else is stepping up here.
Starting point is 00:09:09 It's not just Gabby Marshall's defense. She's now hitting three-pointers, which she wasn't doing a month ago. Kate Martin is Kate Martin. Sydney O'Folter has been really good. Hannah Stolke has been really good. There's a lot of pieces to this. And when you look back to that game on Sunday and how they won that game
Starting point is 00:09:26 down the stretch and in overtime, it was just everybody making plays. And that's what a veteran team does. That's what a veteran team does that has been really good in March. They know how to win games. Those kind of intangibles make them a pretty tough team to beat once you get into tournament
Starting point is 00:09:42 play. Now, they've got some flaws. I think we've seen this in the last few games, you know, Kalen missing shots, which normally makes, you know, there are, there are certain things that can happen.
Starting point is 00:09:52 They can trip you up. But the fact of the matter is on Sunday, they could have easily just been tripped up and say, okay, we're going on the NC tournament. No, they went, they came back and won.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And so I think that's a really good sign for this team. As you get in now and into the NCAA tournament that they know how to win those games like that. You know, you mentioned Kay Martin, and we talked about Gabby Marshall. She's finding her shot again. Hannah Stolke, her improvement seemingly, I mean, you guys correct me if I'm wrong, from the start of the year to where she's at now, right? We kept hearing about Sanano not there, blah blah again you don't have her this team's not as good as they were last year
Starting point is 00:10:29 just because of her presence I'm not so sure that Hannah Stolke's not changing some opinions I think that her game right now is peaking and obviously she's got a couple more years left of eligibility but I think Stolke's improvement over the course of the year has gone a long way to John Bowen camp. Oh yeah. I mean, I, there is no doubt about that. And you know, I mean, I, I think at the beginning of the year, the thought was she was going to play the four spot and they were going to find a post out of, you know, what was, whether it was Sharon Goodman, Addy O'Grady, AJ Edgar, whoever, that they were going to just get it. Like just, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:04 replace Monica Sonato's production among the three of them. But then they realized, OK, we can play Hannah Stolke here. We can have Molly Davis in the lineup, and we can be a little bit of a smaller lineup and still win games. And I think Hannah Stolke has played really well. I don't know how comfortable she is being a post. I think maybe she is a little bit better. She would probably be a little more comfortable, but she doesn't look like it. You know, she looks like she's very comfortable in there,
Starting point is 00:11:31 and she's played well, and she's had big games. You think back to the 47 she had against Penn State. They have more than replaced that production inside that they lost from last year. And again, that makes them just that much of a better team. South Carolina and the number one overall seed, other number one seeds, Texas, Iowa, USC, Stanford. Well, you mentioned five teams. There's only four spots.
Starting point is 00:11:58 No, I don't think LSU can get there. They're probably going to be on the two line. But who gets those top four seeds and is Iowa? Did they get the two or three seed gets those top four seeds in his iowa did they get the two or three seat that's the most important thing second or third overall seed and staying away from carolina as long as possible i you i mean yeah if you're if you're in the second or third spot you stay away from them so you're gonna be really happy if you're one of the two spots so so to be curious to see how this happens how it kind of plays out on sunday because last year we all
Starting point is 00:12:23 thought okay they might sneak into number one and said they were the best number two seed, which means, you know. So, you know, again, the difference between one and two seed is the laundry you wear in the regional final. But you want to be a number one seed. You want to be a two or three at this point. A two would be great because you would just get a play. A first round or a first four winner i almost
Starting point is 00:12:46 said play and you don't say that i don't approve it no no i i would have gotten mad at myself but um but but i mean so i mean you that would be kind of a cool deal i think to have another game at carver besides you can play but again i you know as long as you can the longer you can stay away from a really really difficult difficult South Carolina team, the better off you are. So if you're going to be a one-seat, you want to be that second overall or third overall. Just real quick, I don't think either one of you follow the recruiting in women's basketball, but Addie Deal, a top 10 player in the country,
Starting point is 00:13:23 is that solely based on she watched Caitlin Clark do what she did and now she's got the green light to shoot? Because I guess this Addie Deal is quite the shooter. Is Caitlin Clark solely the reason that Addie Deal is a Hawkeye? I think that helps. I mean, I think it helps a lot. And I mean, and I mean, I mean, because when, when you see, when a player like that sees what Caitlin Clark has done for four years and the freedom she's been allowed by her head coach, that's the place you want to go. Now, I don't know if you noticed this the other day, but there was a picture of her from when she was at Carver a few weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:13:58 she was wearing a sweatshirt with a Dodgers logo on it. Oh boy. So she's got problems is what you're saying. So, so, so we could be getting the Otani of women's basketball here. I don't know. But like I said, I do think this was a really big get, and I do think it was because of what she has
Starting point is 00:14:17 seen the last four years out of Kaitlyn Carr. You know, hey, she's allowed to do this. I can be allowed to do this. And her older brother is playing over at grinnell college pretty easy for mom and dad yeah flying to cedar rapids be able to catch a couple of games probably works out a little bit better on that front too playing over in that running gun style with grinnell so maybe helped out what was the kid's name that tore it up when he was here with us i don't remember either. Oh, yeah, the monster performance with 109 points.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Yeah, bananas performance. Anyways. Well, let's get into the men and not the Grinnell men. Let's talk about the Hawkeye men. A win against Ohio State, probably not going to be enough. It feels like they have to get two here to be an NCAA tournament team. Do you see it the same way, Bowen Camp? I think you've got to win at least one and maybe two.
Starting point is 00:15:04 And, I mean, it's, you know, again, they're going to be on the board when the voting is done today, you know, and they vote, you know, who should be in and who they should talk about. They'll be on the board. The longer you can stay on the board, the better off you are. We talk about the resume a lot, but when you start comparing it side by side with a lot of other resumes that are going to be so they don't look that much different but so that's why you want to distinguish yourself this week you want to go up there and win a game one if you the more you will be the more damage you can do up there the better off this resume if you get knocked out on thursday that makes it really really difficult to stay on that board for those last couple of picks, you know, when the committee gets going.
Starting point is 00:15:46 So, I mean, I really think you have to win Thursday. And then the more you win, the better off you are. Do you think that if they do get past Ohio State, and I say if because the Buckeyes are playing well, John, since they fired Holtman, this has been a different basketball team. Do you think, I mean, we both watched the Illinois game. You were there. We saw both Illinois games within the last couple of weeks. I don't think Illinois is night and day better than Iowa. I just don't.
Starting point is 00:16:12 I didn't like the start, obviously, this past Sunday. Nobody did if you want the Hawkeyes to put it in the win column. But if they wouldn't take the floor on Friday against Illinois, should they get there thinking, oh, boy, this is going to be impossible. Illinois's got our number. Yeah, they beat you twice, but it's not like they've owned you. No, and I mean, you take away the first five minutes from Sunday's game, that's a really good game.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Take away the last five minutes from when they played in Champaign, that's a really – I mean, Iowa controlled that game until those last. So no, they're not, they're not a scary opponent. They're, they're not a, like a Purdue where you just are just, there just is so many matchup problems. Yeah. There are matchup problems with Illinois, but, but you played with them outside of certain segments of the game and you were actually better than them in Champaign for a lot of that game. So no so no you're not worried that much i don't think about playing them and plus if you get a
Starting point is 00:17:09 game under your belt with that you go out there and then and now you've got you know there's a little bit of momentum behind you so yeah it's not it's not a it's not a unwinnable game on friday if they get there and if they don't NIT net is certainly there for them. The highest ranked teams in the net, the top two from each of the power conferences, get an automatic bid. That would mean a home game also for Iowa, but Carver's going to be taken by the women's NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Have you heard any scuttlebutt about that? Would it be a quick turnaround where maybe Iowa would have to potentially play on Tuesday in their home game in the NIT, or would they just have to do like they've done in the past have to play the game in the mark or just go on the road that you would have to find another place but if you played on tuesday it wouldn't be a problem right you know so i mean i do think it probably if if they would you know i mean if if they lose on thursday yeah okay it's not really that quick a turnaround when you think about it. If you would play until Saturday and then all of a sudden you still don't get in, well, yeah, then it is a quick turnaround.
Starting point is 00:18:12 But, no, I do think it would be probably a Tuesday game and then the NCAA will take it over. Now, it depends a lot on when Iowa's – the women are going to play. They've been Friday, Saturday, Friday, Sunday for so many of these tournaments, but those tournaments were always held over spring break. It's not going to be spring break, and where are you going to park 15,000 fans on a Friday afternoon? So we'll wait and kind of see what happens here with all this.
Starting point is 00:18:39 But, yeah, if you can get a home game out of it and play on Tuesday, the better off you are. I mean, you don't want to have to go find somewhere else to play. And I think you're better off just going on Tuesday and being done with it. We saw three players honored before the game against Illinois. Kricke, obviously, he's out of eligibility. He has no decision to make. We think Patrick McCaffrey's decided not to come back.
Starting point is 00:19:05 But Tony Perkins, and Tony Perkins could not like the way he left Carver-Hawkeye for the last time. I mean, one for 10, two points. He fouled himself out in the first half. Well, Fran fouled him out when he picked up that second foul. Do you think that that factors into it at all, just how poorly he played and what will, you know, if he doesn't come back, what will be his final game at Carver? When's he going to make his decision and do you have any
Starting point is 00:19:29 feeling for which way he's leaning regarding next year, John? I think if he wants to use that last year's belt, I think he comes back. I mean, unless there's somewhere that he really wants to go and somebody's really calling him and say, hey, come play your fifth year here, then he goes. But I mean, unless there's somewhere that he really wants to go and somebody's
Starting point is 00:19:45 really calling him and say, Hey, come play your fifth year here. Then he goes. But I think if he's going to play one more year of eligibility that he's got, he can, he's going to come back to Iowa. I just, I can't see anywhere else that, that he wants to go to unless they're interested in him. So, you know, and I think that's going to kind of be, but again, there's a lot of demand out there for a fifth-year guard that can play the way he can. So, you know, if he really wants to play, you might be surprised on who might be calling him. Where's he from?
Starting point is 00:20:15 Indiana? Indiana. Yeah. Indianapolis. Indiana and Purdue didn't want him, you know, and so that has always been kind of a chip on the shoulder for him, you know. So, I mean, again, so there's somebody out there that maybe is closer to where he lives and he wants to go play there.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Yeah, I could keep going. But I think if he really is going to want to use that fifth year, I think he comes back to Iowa. Heard a crazy rumor, and that's all this is on Patrick. Going to finish up his career somewhere else. Really? At a Blue Blood. I heard that too. Really? At a Blue Blood. I heard that too. Really?
Starting point is 00:20:46 Blue Devil Blood. Whoa. I haven't heard that. Yeah. Does he want to play? Well, that's the thing. The impression I got the other day was that this is kind of it for him. And again, if there's somebody out there that, I mean,
Starting point is 00:21:04 if there's a place where he wants to use that last inning and wants to be comfortable and just play, yeah, I could see him going somewhere else. He'd be a practice player. Only. Maybe just enjoying the environment from one last year.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Duke's not a bad school either. You're going to grad school there. That's going to give you a pretty good leap forward also. I mean, I've heard a lot of East Coast names just being East Coast. And I mean, rumors are rumors. So I don't put a lot of stock in a lot of things. But I do think that if there's a right fit for him and he wants to keep playing, he'll go.
Starting point is 00:21:45 There it is, John Boenkamp joining us. And yes, that wild rumor that is out there. And again, it's just a rumor. This is not fact. This is not something that is absolutely happening, but it's out there. We'll see Patrick McCaffrey finishing up his career. And even if it isn't a place like Duke, finishing up a one more go around, playing with a different coaching staff,
Starting point is 00:22:02 maybe even an ability to go out there and see other places. I don't think it's crazy. I think it's something that you could definitely see a very trying career and really life for Patrick McCaffrey going back. Obviously what he's dealt with, with the cancer diagnosis a decade ago and going through that, whatever it is, we will see. But again, just a rumor. Don't be running to the message boards.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Don't be running and saying that I am stating this. That's not what this is. It's just a rumor. Don't be running to the message boards. Don't be running and saying that I am stating this. That's not what this is. It's just a rumor. We continue here on Lockdown Hawkeyes. We go from a crazy rumor to a crazy frustrating year for Iowa baseball. What is going on with the Iowa baseball team? They drop another one yesterday at the hands of Georgia. We'll talk about that as we continue Lockdown Hawkeyes.

Trent Conner back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. As always, thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Yesterday, the struggles of the Iowa baseball team continued as they fall now to 6-9 on the season. Well, it is 7-9, but the win against Loras does not count
Starting point is 00:24:12 for the records pertaining to the RPI and their overall resume. So Iowa sits with a record of 6-9. A loss to Georgia was their last great opportunity to get a quality non-conference victory. What they have going for now in the non-conference coming up this weekend, they will welcome in Western Illinois, who is 4-11 on the season and an RPI of 171. Then you get into Big Ten play. Their other midway games at Bradley, RPI 258. St. Thomas, 163. Bradley again, that RPI, 258. 239 for Milwaukee, who's 1-13 on the year.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Illinois State, RPI, 120. Well, North Dakota State, they're 3-12. The RPI is pretty good because they played a tough schedule. UIC at the end of the season, and then they wrap up against Florida International. That will be played in Des Moines at the I-Cubs Stadium. That's what they have. The Big Ten, as we know in baseball, is not elite.
Starting point is 00:25:11 Nebraska's off to a good start this year. Their RPI is in really good shape. But Iowa has now dug such a deep hole that really anything short of having a ridiculous run through the Big Ten, having a record well eclipsing everybody else, they have to win in Omaha to be an NCAA tournament team. This was a team projected by many. This wasn't a Homer pick. This wasn't just people that cover Iowa or even cover the Big Ten.
Starting point is 00:25:37 National, respected national people. But Iowa's not only going to be an NCAA tournament team, but they had the potential to host a regional, host a super regional, to get to Omaha in the College World Series, and it hasn't happened. The biggest reason and the biggest culprit has been the disappointing bullpen. It has been nothing short of a dumpster fire. And you are now in a spot where you're looking up against most everybody in the Big Ten. The schedule that they're going to have to face,
Starting point is 00:26:05 as mentioned, Nebraska's on there. That's going to be incredibly difficult. They're going to have to play so well. Just to put together a resume, to even be on the bubble, it's going to be tough to do. Incredibly frustrating, one of the most anticipated Iowa baseball seasons that we've seen in a long year. Now, long time.
Starting point is 00:26:21 Now, there's still two months left of the schedule. They could get this thing turned around, but we said it the last week. Going into the series down at Jacksonville State, it felt like, at minimum, they had to win two out of three. They lose two out of three. The one in the middle was great, a 20-1 victory, but Brody Brecht, a rain-shortened start from him,
Starting point is 00:26:42 looked like he could have come out, pitched another inning or two, but they decided to play with the weather. It didn't go Iowa's way. Iowa blows a 4-1 lead. Then on Sunday, didn't get it going. There's issues right now with this team, and it's not just the bullpen. Not coming up with timely hits.
Starting point is 00:26:56 It's not the Heller ball that we're used to. Frustrating. Very well could be a frustrating spring. Hopefully it's not frustrating tomorrow as the Iowa team on the men's side gets ready to face off against Ohio State. We will preview the matchup tomorrow, get you ready for it, and then an instant reaction podcast coming your way.
