day. Iowa picks up a commitment first from Drew Thelwell on the men's basketball side from
Moorhead State. Moorhead State, an NCAA tournament team in two of his four years. He was a starter
and a big contributor over the last couple of seasons after playing limited minutes early in
his career. But this is just what the doctor ordered
as it pertains to what Iowa basketball needs on the men's side, certainly for next season.
We know that there's a lot of excitement about Brock Harding and what he potentially can be.
He's a playmaker. He's a facilitator. He's incredibly fun to watch. And with those things,
you're kind of left saying, you know what? Maybe there's something here. He's a different type of point guard.
There's going to be some defensive assignments that you maybe are a little bit concerned
about.
But one thing we knew going into next season, if you believe that Brock Harding's a guy,
you just let him cut.
Put him out there 30 minutes a game and see what happens and see what kind of assist totals
that he is going to put up there.
You could have that thought, but Iowa didn't have a backup point guard.
Josh Dix is not a point guard at the Big point guard. Josh Dix is not a point guard
at the Big Ten level.
Price Sanford is not a point guard
at the Big Ten level.
They needed some depth
in the backcourt,
and that's exactly what they got
with Drew Thelwell.
We will see who's going
to be the starter here.
I would anticipate
one of the two guys
between Thelwell and Harding.
One of them will be
about 25 minutes a game.
The other probably in that 15 minute range type of guy.
But Iowa sold him.
There's an opportunity here.
If you win the job, you absolutely can take it.
Him as a prospect, you look first,
when you look at the numbers, the assist totals,
and those are the ones that are absolutely eye-popping.
Over six assists a game a season ago,
1.3 steals per contest,
10 points per contest, the average 11 the year before, shoots it at a pretty decent clip,
33.8% this year, the year previous 38% from behind the three-point arc. A lot of good things
to look at for him. And if he turns out to be just a backup, you're good. To have a four-year
starter, a four-year player at the D1
level at Moorhead State, team that was in the NCAA tournament this past season, pushed Illinois for a
little while. He played pretty well in that game, had eight points, four assists, had a steal in that
game, only turned it over one time against the pressure of Illinois. That's pretty good stuff
there. So this is a great fit. Absolutely, positively, exactly what you're looking for. Yeah, would you love to have a star that is able to come in? That'd be wonderful.
But we know with the way that the portal is set up, where Iowa is financially,
it's just not likely that Iowa's going to be in there fishing and swimming in the biggest
prospects, right? The top 10, 15 players in the country, Iowa doesn't have the funds to make that
happen. This is one that makes a whole lot of sense.
Peyton Sanford comes back next season.
I believe this is going to be an NCAA tournament team.
We're going to see huge growth out of the four freshmen.
I think both Cooper Koch coming in next season,
him along with Chris Taj.
So both those guys can make at least some kind of impact.
This is a step in the right direction and they're not done.
I was still shopping looking for now another big center, power forward, somebody that you
compare with Owen Freeman inside for next season.
We talk about the young talent inside, really excited.
Now you need Peyton Sanford back to have this be an NCAA tournament team, but I think Iowa
is in good shape and getting fell well, a big part of that one.
The other commitment that they get is Lucy Olsen, the Villanova guard.
And what many people consider one of the best players in the portal this
off season,
Lisa Bluter was the one that called her first and she had lights to go.
I had a great column about that.
Having that initial contact.
Yeah.
We hear this so many times in recruiting.
It doesn't matter if it's at the high school level,
if it's at the portal level,
whatever it is,
when you make that first impact, right?
Getting the leg up, how important that is.
And Lisa Bluter was able to do that.
She visits Iowa City.
There's a tornado watch going on.
I mean, all kinds of craziness.
And yet, very quickly, she saw the vision for Iowa.
One of the many reasons that I respect Lisa Bluter so much as a basketball coach is her ability to adapt,
to build a team and do it with a bunch of different parts. We go back to what they were
with Meg Augustus and what would they were with, with Kathleen Doyle. And you go back,
Crystal Smith, one of the fastest players in college basketball on and on and on so many
different types of players, a Sam logic, a point guard, just so different than what you normally
see at the point guard position.
And then of course,
the way that they built the program through Caitlin Clark here over the last
four seasons,
her ability to be adaptable,
to find different players,
different schemes,
and then put it together and make it at a high level as one of the biggest
reasons that I respect her so much as a coach.
And yes,
we know that Lucy Olson is not going to be Caitlin Clark.
Now third in the country in scoring a year ago, averaging over 23 per game. That's pretty good.
Nearly five assists, nearly four, four, five rebounds, excuse me, four assists per contest.
You know, she's going to have more talent around her. This was not a very good Villanova team
this past season. They lost Maddie Segrist, the number three pick a year ago, to the WNBA.
It was very much a rebuilding year,
yet Olsen took the reins,
taking over a superstar
from Segrist on her own right
and did at an incredible high level.
They made a deep run in the WBIT.
They made it all the way
to the championship game
where they eventually fell
to Illinois in that one.
She had a great run,
a great tournament,
had wins,
had 29 points in a
win against VCU in the first round, 30 against Virginia, 21, six and six against Penn State
in the semifinals, and then had 22, six and five in the loss to Illinois. She's a different type
of guard. Doesn't have the same kind of range, certainly as Kaitlyn Clark. Very few do. Not a
great shooter from the outside outside more of kind of a
set shooter if she's open she can knock it down that's not her game her game is the pull-up game
uh very good in the mid-range and then getting to the rim at five foot nine that's going to be a
little bit different but i have confidence that lisa bluter jan jensen coach stamp brain up the
whole group fits they're all going to put it together and they're going to put come up with
the scheme here and now you think of the way and they're going to come up with the scheme here.
And now you think of the way that they're going to be built.
All right, Olsen, really good playmaker, good with the ball in her hands,
her ability to get into the paint.
Shooters on the outside.
We know Sidney Affolter and kind of that Swiss Army knife,
how good she is and what she can do.
That's really exciting.
Taylor McCabe, now her minutes are going to go up next season.
What she'll be.
Feuerbach, also in that backcourt.
And then what they do up front.
Now there's a decision to be made.
Do you go back traditional this season?
Because this is going to be a more traditional team.
And is it Ava Hyden, the 6'4", top 50 freshman coming in next season?
Is she your starter at the center position?
And then he plays Stolke at the floor.
Is it maybe potentially Addy O'Grady?
We saw times,
we saw minutes, we saw her as a starter earlier this season. And is there one more rung up that she can go this season? A potential there. A lot of moving parts, a lot of opportunities,
but at minimum, with the addition of Lucy Olsen, Iowa next season, not just an NCAA tournament team,
I think a real chance to make another run and at minimum get to the second weekend of the tournament and another sweet 16 team. I think the potential
certainly there for this women's basketball team. Very exciting time in basketball. We got a lot
going on. We're going to break it down with our guy, Elliot Clough from rivals. He's going to
jump on go Iowa. Awesome. We're going to hear from him a little bit, break things down, get into
these transfer portal prospects a little bit deeper, what he's seen.
I know he's had an opportunity to talk to a lot of people.
There's more portal news.
We're going to talk some football, the spring game, open practice coming up on Saturday.
We're going to get into that with Elliot as we continue.

Go Iowa.
Awesome part of the Rivals Network.
It's the Hawkeye site.
Elliot, Trent, and Ken, how are you, sir?
I'm good.
How are you guys doing?
Doing well.
A lot of ground to cover with you, and thanks for coming on.
We appreciate it.
Let's start with the ladies first, and Lucy Olsen is a Hawkeye big get for Lisa Bluter.
Got to keep that momentum building, if possible.
Certainly maintain at the very least.
And bringing in the nation's third leading score from last year.
She's not Kaitlyn Clark.
I hope she doesn't try to be.
I don't think she will.
But this is a good get for Bluter's bunch.
Oh, yeah.
This is a massive get for Iowa women's basketball.
And you have to think that not only the success of the team in March
and all the things that Kaitlyn did over her career at Iowa
was able to convey to Lucy that this was going to be an awesome opportunity for her,
but to see Kaitlyn go number one
and then to see Kate Martin getin get drafted in the wnba draft
the other night you have to think that was like oh okay noted on all of that she's one of the best
scorers in the country she can she's like you said she's not going to be caitlin clark you presume
she's not going to try to be caitlin clark but to add that level of production after you lose
that level of production is huge for this Iowa women's basketball team.
And, you know,
expectations aren't going to be as high as maybe they would have been if
Caitlin decided to stick around for another year,
but getting that type of player into that spot,
into that point guard spot.
And after losing Molly Davis and Gabby Marshall to add to that backcourt,
man, that's, that's just huge.
So Olson adds the fray.
What have you seen from her one thing I saw
a shot chart she can knock down a three-pointer but she is more kind of a mid-range type of player
kind of what that means and her as a point guard what that means and how they're going to play next
season right that's yeah that's a big question friend um you have to factor in the the freshman
that they're bringing into obviously Aaliyah Guyton coming off an ACL injury and Denise having an injury as well. So that's going to affect how things shake out,
but they've got the three freshmen, Ava Hyden, as well as the other Ava Hyden going to be a post
that's going to play quite a bit. You at least imagine so being 6'4 and stepping in right away.
And then of course, Hannah Stolke back, Sidney Affolter back.
So this roster is going to have some talent on it,
but they're going to mix things up.
Well, to put it lightly,
they're not the football staff.
When the things change personnel-wise,
they change.
So, I mean, you saw what Lisa Bluter did
in the tournament.
They lost Molly Davis,
another primary ball handler.
So they changed things up, right? And obviously lost monica senano from last season's team so they changed
going into this season things will be different they're not going to be the exact same though
lucy can shoot the three ball like you said and like we've both said uh she's she's not caitlin
so things are going to be different next season uh but but lisa bluter has shown that she can take
different situations and still be a phenomenal coach. She makes adjustments. And that's what shows that she's a phenomenal coach. She's willing
to make those adjustments. And she does well at it when she does. Elliot, every game was sold out
last year. What's a realistic average attendance next year in your mind? I mean, I think it would
be probably a long shot that they duplicate what they did. But I don't, especially now, I mean, I think it would be probably a long shot that they duplicate what they did. But I don't, especially now, I mean, I think that that's a huge feather in their cap and a huge signal to the fan base that, you know what, we're still going to be here and we're still going to contend for Big Ten championships and we're not going away.
What's realistic number?
12,000?
10,000?
Where would you put it?
Sure.
So selling out, I'm sure they'll do that on occasion sure
they'll play the ohio states of the world they'll play some of the better teams in the country
indiana of course um so so that'll happen on occasion but you have to think i mean it's what
people have said over and over again about caitlin clark right she's one of one and she is one of one so
expecting to sell out the entire season would would be a stretch but i'd probably say 80 percent
maybe 80 to 90 percent of what we've seen these last few years and they'll still do well on the
road too it's not again it's not going to be the caitlyn clark effect because she is in her own
she's in her own category.
So you have to think that they're going to be a great show,
that they're going to do well still with the fan base,
but I'd probably say 80 to 90%. Do you guys think that's fair?
Yeah, we're trying to probably 80%, I think.
Yeah, if you average over 10,000, you know, in that 11 range.
And there will be sellouts, as you said, Elliot, don't you think, Trent? Yeah, a couple of big games. I mean, USC and Juju are coming to town. Yeah, that you average over 10,000 in that 11-year range. And there will be sellouts, as you said, Elliot, don't you think, Trent?
Yeah, a couple big games.
I mean, USC and Juju are coming to town.
Yeah, that's –
Oh, that too.
Yeah.
I should have mentioned that.
That's my bad.
We get those kind of possibilities.
Ohio State comes to town, things like that.
Definitely, I think we're going to see some sellouts.
Where was – where's CyHawk next year?
Is it back over – where was it this year?
I don't even remember.
It was here.
It was an Ames.
Wasn't it?
Jesus.
The men's game was an aim.
I think they both were.
I think they both were.
Do they?
Okay.
I think so.
And be writer for the site.
So no,
I'm with you.
I've just,
I'm just trying,
but that'll sell out.
I would assume because,
uh,
Fennelly's got a really good team and,
um,
going up against the,
yeah,
that,
that should sell out. So I would think the 11,000 somewhere in there. Let's go to a really good team. And going up against, yeah, that should sell out.
So I would think the 11,000, somewhere in there.
Let's go to the men's team.
Not sure how many sellouts we'll see there, maybe outside of the game.
How many were there?
They started to pick up at the end.
But not a whole lot of motivation.
They bring in Thillwell.
And your thoughts on him?
Got Brock Harding there.
A lot of people want to see him as a starting point guard.
Your thoughts just as Thelwall as a prospect
and how the point guard position is going to look next season for Iowa.
This is a good add.
I actually talked with Drew yesterday after he made his decision.
Really good kid.
I think he's going to fit the culture really well.
First off, their pitch to him was that they need a point guard.
They need a leader.
They need a guy who's mature.
And not that Brock isn't those things, but he's just a sophomore.
He's only played one full season of college basketball.
And I think the ceiling continues to grow for Brock.
I think he is.
I really do think the world of Brock.
I think they're going to complement each other really well, though.
I mean, Drew has won all four years that he was at Morehead State.
He went to the NCAA tournament as a freshman.
And this last season where they gave gave illinois hell in the first round of course illinois pulled away because
that's a really good basketball team but they did give them they did give them a good uh give them
a good run uh in that first round in the 14th seed but drew is a guy who really orchestrated
the offense for the eagles last season 6.2 assists per game which was 15th in the country
he finished with the 18th most assists in the country as well last season.
So he's a guy that moves the ball.
That's going to fit in really well with Fran's offense.
He can score.
He's not going to be an elite scorer at just 10 points a game this last season.
I think it was around three or four rebounds per game.
But he's going to help the offense.
Is he going to be the star?
No.
But he's going to come in, and he's going to help the offense is he going to be the star no but he's going to come in and
he's going to be great for the culture he's going to be a guy who can lead on and off the floor
he's going to complement brock really well and here's the thing i'm not sure if you guys are
familiar with the long list of uh interest that iowa showed in point guards point guards in the
portal but it was a lot of guys who are undersized like Brock Brock's just five, 11, six foot, six feet tall and fell out six,
three.
So he adds a little bit of that size,
which is going to help defensively.
Also the three point shot wasn't the,
the free throw wasn't a great percentage last season,
just 64% from the free throw line,
33% from,
from three,
but he did have a wrist injury.
And the year prior,
he was shooting 73% from the free throw line and 38% from three but he did have a wrist injury um and the year prior he was shooting 73
percent from the free throw line and 38 percent from three so those numbers not super indicative
of what he's capable of but the assist i think that that's massive for what iowa wants to do
he does a lot of his scoring around the rim so he's going to collapse the defense he's going to
find owen freeman on the pick and roll he's going to find assuming peyton stanford comes back he's
going to find josh dicks on the perimeter for for open jump's going to find, assuming Peyton Stanford comes back, he's going to find Josh Dix on the perimeter for open jump shots.
So this was a great ad.
Was it a huge splash of an ad?
No, but it's going to help the Hawkeyes team next season.
No, I think it fits like a glove.
I'm with you.
What else is McCaffrey looking at?
Somebody I would think to play Ben Kricke's role next year?
Yeah, so I'll tell you what.
The staff is keeping things really tight to the vest right now in terms of who they're showing interest in. Ben Kricke's role next year? Yeah, so I'll tell you what.
The staff is keeping things really tight to the vest right now in terms of who they're showing interest in in the portal
just because they don't want other schools to swoop in, of course.
But I did see that they were looking at John, I think it's Tonjay,
of Missouri.
Iowa State is showing interest in him as well.
He missed a lot of the season injured, right?
Not the kid?
He did. Yeah. Yep. I believe he only played in eight games for Missouri last season. Iowa State is showing interest in him as well. He missed a lot of the season injured, right? Not the kid?
He did.
Yeah.
Yep.
I believe he only played in eight games for Missouri last season.
But maybe a bit of a trade going on for Tony Perkins.
Okay.
He's a 6'5", 6'6", wing that they may bring in,
and that'll add some depth to that wing spot and, of course, add some versatility in terms of what they want to do lineup-wise.
But you have to imagine they're going to go in and try to get another power forward or center out of the portal to help depth there.
We've seen what we've seen from Riley Mulvey and Evan Braun, so we'll see what that depth looks like at center.
But you have to imagine that they're going to want to go and get a power forward.
looks like at center, but you have to imagine that they're going to want to go and get a power forward. You can play a little bit of four and five, maybe like another Lodgy Dembale that you
can trust in terms of bringing in some athleticism. You can score around the rim. You can defend the
rim, something like that. That's really what you want. And they do have two scholarships open now.
So if they can get a guy like Tonjay, if they can get a power forward to fill that spot and really
bring some versatility in the front courtourt, that would help a lot.
You know, we hear a lot about the Swarm Collective and that Iowa, at least on the men's basketball front,
not as well equipped as many programs out there.
Do you believe it's dire?
I mean, you see Phil Well very quickly make his commitment there.
There's circles or at least corners of the internet that believe that Iowa is so far behind.
How big is that gap between them and, say, the the mid range of kind of the power structure of college basketball?
Oh, well, you know, I don't know an exact number. I'll start with that trend. I don't know an exact
number. But I can tell you that this this Tony Perkins situation was telling right because
that number that Fran brought up 500,000. I can verify that an offer was very close to that amount of money from another school that wanted him in the country.
And Tony was in a position to take advantage of that, right?
Like, this is a scenario where he's in his final year of eligibility.
Go get paid, dude.
Like, it makes sense.
And Iowa's just not equipped to match that type of money.
They're just not.
They're a Big Ten school, right?
They have that edge over these mid-major programs.
And truthfully, I think the way they've targeted things,
other than this Missouri target, of course,
they've gone after a lot of mid-major guys.
And that's the way it was last year with Ben Crickey and Evan bronze too.
Uh, and I think that's ultimately telling of where they're at.
Sure.
They want a culture fit.
Sure.
They want guys that are going to fit on, on, on the roster, but money, it's just, it's
not as plentiful as it is for the football side of things, right?
It's not as plentiful as it is at some schools like Missouri, like these Blue
Bloods, like Kansas, like UNC, where folks are shelling out the cash to keep the school of Blue
Blood, right? So I wouldn't call it dire, but they're not in an ideal situation money-wise,
let's say that. What do you think that you'll see Saturday at the spring football, whatever
they're calling it, game practice, open practice?
What do you think you're going to see
on Saturday morning?
Well, I can
tell you a few things I'm looking forward
to, and that's to see how
different the offense is. I think everybody's going to
be watching that, right? We're going to be watching for
RPOs, post-snap reads by
the quarterback, and if it's going to be Deacon hill or marco linez taking those snaps because uh that's
that that that spot of the for the quarterback is is one of the one of if not the number one
question because kate mcnamara has been hurt the last two three seasons right like inevitably
it's unfortunately but inevitably it feels like
we're going to see a different quarterback
other than Peyton McNamara at some point this season.
You know, God forbid that an injury does happen,
excuse me, but it has been the trend.
So is it Deacon Hill?
Is it Marco Lainez?
Is it a situation where we see what we see on Saturday
and everybody's still clamoring to grab a quarterback out of the transfer portal when they're four over on the scholarship number?
And then, of course, you know, honestly, I think we're all in a situation where considering how good defense is and has been, that's like not a storyline at all.
It's all about the offense. It's all about who we see in the rotation with the running back. TJ Washington, he's been taking snaps at running back and at receiver. How much
is Caleb Brown going to touch the ball? What's Dayton Howard and Jerry Agui look like? Is the
offensive line, though they have so many guys coming back, are they going to get any push on
this defensive line? And again, we're at a scenario where folks are going to read into a lot what
they see on Saturday, like we do every year, but don't take what we see in the spring and think
it's automatically going to apply to the fall. There are still moves to be made in the transfer
portal. There are still additions to be made. So we'll see. We'll see how things shake out.
It's the offense, right? And that's the number one thing we're all watching.
Final minute with you, Elliot.
You mentioned the transfer portal, backup quarterback, wide receiver, kind of need positions there.
How active has Iowa been?
Is this going to be maybe a little bit more of a wait-and-see approach here as soon as they get through Saturday?
What are you hearing on the recruiting front?
Right.
It's just got to be a wait and see just because they are strapped for
scholarships right now. We've got to see if guys enter the portal after Saturday, if they see the
writing on the wall, oh, I didn't get the snaps I wanted to. I think this is telling if this is a
situation where the staff feels the need to medical a couple of guys or to tell them to move on,
which isn't that latter thing, isn't Iowa's MO. But when you're in a situation where you're strapped for scholarship,
you've got to go get some talent.
Maybe things change, right?
So Iowa's got to go out.
I think they've got to look for a quarterback.
They've got to look for a receiver.
And if you can get a left tackle, man, I mean, losing Caden Proctor,
even though you had him for about 20 minutes, hurts.
And Mason Richmond just flat out hasn't been good enough at that last tackle spot.
So if you can go out and get a left tackle, you add a left tackle as well.
And don't forget, obviously we're not positive where the scholarship situation is going to be,
but defensive tackle depth is a question mark going into this season too.
And that's a position that they like to rotate.
They like to have eight defensive linemen that could play at each of those respective spots.
And though Aaron Graves and Y.A. Black are awesome,
and of course you've got Jeremiah Pittman in there,
Luke Gaffney's in that fourth spot,
if you can add some depth at the defensive tackle spot,
you go get it.
Yep, can't have enough of them.
I totally agree with you.

Wrapping things up today,
and it is Kaitlyn Clark.
The deal is with Nike,
and there were other suitors.
We know that she had a deal a season ago
with Nike in her final year of college eligibility,
but to the idiots out there like Darren Revelle, well, you should make more money if she stayed in college. We know that she had a deal a season ago with Nike in her final year of college eligibility.
But to the idiots out there like Darren Revelle,
hey, you should make more money if she stayed in college.
No, you wouldn't.
And he's wrong.
And, well, he might be the dumbest person to ever come out of Northwestern. That aside, huge.
$20 million for Kaitlyn Clark.
And I know it's going to be happening in my home with an eight and four year old
when the Caitlin Clark shoes come out.
Now, neither of my kids are sneaker heads.
I'm not a sneaker head.
My wife's not a sneaker head,
but I know there's a lot of people out there.
But this thing, not just inside the state of Iowa,
across the country is going to be a monster.
How many kids, how many tournaments you're going to see
with kids with their logo threes or their logo ones or their Caitlyn's or whatever they end up being called.
This is historic.
It's monstrous.
And it just continues.
Time in and time out.
We talk about Caitlyn Clark.
We talk about her as a player.
We talk about her as a personality.
And it was incredible.
Greg Doyle yesterday, the loudmouth columnist from the Indianapolis Star, showed his true colors.
A bad person, sexist comments.
It was deplorable, but it shouldn't come as a surprise from that person.
I've had many interactions with him in the past and not many good things to say.
Unfortunate, but not a surprise.
A bad person doing bad things.
And that's Greg Doyle.
Not a good guy.
doing bad things.
And that's Greg Doyle.
Not a good guy.
And definitely showed as much with his sexist,
just hideous, hideous question to Caitlin Clark and showing the heart symbol.
Just weird, creepy, disappointing, but not surprising.
