You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome back, Hawkeye Nation, to a Wednesday morning episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade.
Excited to be back for another show today.
And as you probably know if you listened to yesterday's episode,
and if you haven't, make sure to check that out.
We had Torrey Taylor on the show yesterday, Iowa's starting punter.
He is back today to finish up, kind of talk about his story,
talk about the University of Iowa,
and telling you about his favorite food that he has discovered
since being over in the States.
It is that kind of day-to-day.
We have Tori Taylor on the show.
Before we get into that, though, we do have some baseball talk,
and we have some small recruiting talk.
Aiden Lowry, a running back prospect who is choosing between Iowa and Illinois,
is deciding tonight.
So as you're listening to this, we are going to find out if we got a running back,
and that is going to hopefully happen tonight.
Hopefully we get Aiden Lowry in the program.
That would be very, very exciting.
Also on the recruiting front, Brody Brecht is going to the University of Iowa.
As you probably know if you've listened to this show before,
he was a big-time MLB prospect and could throw the ball in the high 90s,
touching as high as 98.
Very, very raw pitcher who people expected to maybe go in the second
to fourth or fifth rounds.
He had a very high asking price, though, and that kind of scared away some teams.
And it sounds like with all the reports coming out,
he really just wanted to play football.
Football is his passion, and he wants to be an Iowa Hawkeye,
and he's always wanted to be an Iowa Hawkeye, and he's always wanted to
be an Iowa Hawkeye.
So that is a huge addition to that class of 2021.
He's going to be joining the program this summer after state baseball, and really excited
to see what Brody Brecht can do within the program.
So lots of fun there.
Finally, on the Hunter Deo news, some more additions on the recruiting front, I guess.
Hunter Deo, a four-star defensive tackle prospect that Iowa was very high on
or very early on, I should say,
and it sounds like he was very high on going to Iowa.
There were some concerns reported about him and his academics
and whether or not he was going to be academically eligible
to play for the University of Iowa.
Just I can't verify this.
What I heard was that Iowa State was willing to let him commit now,
and Iowa wanted to see what his grades were in the summer
before they would let him officially commit.
So not ideal for Hunter.
I hope he's obviously academically eligible
and is able to go play big time
football right away,
but gives a little bit more context to some of that situation as there's a
lot of kind of rumors floating around.
Um,
that was reported directly from 24 seven sports,
uh,
the piece of the academic issues for a hundred day.
Oh,
on the MLB front,
there were several Iowa Hawkeyes drafted this past week,
so very exciting stuff there.
We had Drew Irvine selected in the 19th round,
picked 553 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
We had Trenton Wallace selected in the 11th round,
332nd pick by the Toronto Blue Jays,
and that does do it for the Iowa Hawkeyes drafted.
There were several Iowa Hawkeyes not drafted who could be returning to the Hawks if they wanted to.
Isaiah Fullard, Cam Baumann, and Jack Dreyer.
Those would be big-time additions if they do choose to go to Iowa.
Otherwise, they can sign with teams.
Now that is the latest on the MLB draft.
With all of that being said, though, that kind of gets through the news, notes, and tidbits.
We will not have a show tomorrow, but we will have a show on Friday.
So stay tuned for our Friday episode, breaking down probably more recruiting talk,
as there are several decisions coming up from a recruiting perspective.
Probably talk a little bit about name, image, likeness, and get into some previews going into the season.
So with all that being said, let's get into our conversation with Tori Taylor right now. What did you do in the hotel for a
couple of weeks? How do you keep yourself entertained and not go insane there? Are you
allowed to like work out or leave at all? No, you can't leave your room like at all.
It was kind of daunting because when I first walked in, I was like, well, I'm not walking
out of this door for literally two weeks. So I just um read a lot of books um watched a lot of tv like i was able to watch australian
football which was awesome because i'd missed that a lot um and then yeah i had exams the first
week i was in there as well so that kept me occupied as well and then i don't know you just
find a way um to get into a routine and things like that. So it really wasn't that bad.
I went in on a Thursday and obviously got out the Thursday,
two weeks following, but it was probably like that Monday
to Friday period that felt like the longest because it's the weekday.
Like it wasn't as if I could call people and chat to them
because they're at work.
So that was probably the hardest part um and there
was obviously no sport on during the week but then the weekends flew by because i could obviously
watch um the greatest sport in the world is china football do you have a favorite team i follow the
richmond tigers okay i asked that question like i have any idea what you're gonna say next um yeah
i don't know what the Richmond tigers are. So,
well you should get on board cause they're actually yellow and black,
similar to the Hawkers. So there you go. Okay.
So you're saying if I buy a Richmond tigers Jersey, I'll blend in pretty well.
Yes, absolutely.
How does I'm just going to ask a super ignorant question here.
How does Australian rules football work in terms of the competition in
Australia? Is it similar to like the NFL? How many teams are there?
I'd say it's similar. There's, there's 18 teams.
There's 10 in my state in Victoria where I'm from.
And then there's two in New South Wales, two in Queensland,
two in South Australia, and then two over in Western Australia.
So there's 18 teams in total.
I've been fortunate enough to see my team win it three times
in the last four years, like the title or the Super Bowl, I guess,
whatever you want to call it.
We call it the grand final.
So I've been pretty fortunate enough to see my team win.
But, yeah, don't worry, they were no good for quite a long time.
I'm jealous, man.
I'm a huge
denver broncos fan and they have not been that good the last couple years i would love to see
another super bowl yeah absolutely um so as far as next year what are your goals for next i know
you don't you're not talking about individual goals so uh probably team goals what are your
team goals any anything else you want to talk about from a goals perspective uh probably to
win the big 10 championship i know it's certainly been a while since we um went back there um so it would be
great just like it'd just be such a great experience um to go there um win lose or draw
um i just know um by going there it'll be great experience in itself um and i kind of saw watching
northwest and i know how i
stayed it was kind of one of those things we were like well i remember saying my house like we were
so close it was just a couple of players here or there and we'd um we'd be there right now but
instead we were sitting on the couch watching it all right i want to quickly pause that conversation
with tori we'll be back in just a few moments but i do want to tell you about bet online.ag

as teams prep for the runs to the playoffs.
Betonline.ag, your online sportsbook experts.
Yeah, I think that was probably the toughest thing from a fan perspective.
And obviously I'm not as invested as a player,
but the toughest thing was knowing that we were that close.
And I say we, I'm again not on the team,
but the Hawks were that close to being 8-0
and being in a Big Ten championship game.
And you have one different play and they could go 8-0.
Yeah.
But I guess in saying that it also works the other way,
there was probably – I mean, I don't really know.
There's one or two players that may have won us the game as well.
But, yeah, that's probably the main goal for all of us.
Like that's what we're striving to get to
and everyone's working their butt off
um to get there so uh hopefully we have a um great season yeah man um are you excited for
the indiana game you got indiana iowa state how much actually let me rephrase that question how
much do you know about iowa state and how much do you care about beating iowa state this year
out of any team uh i just i mean i don't i never really understood like the whole rivalry thing
because i'm not from here but since i've been here um you just kind of learn all the stories
and things like that and then yeah there's there's nothing more than um to get better than to go
there and um obviously beat them i'm not sure why there's so much um buzz around them but they seem to
to talk a lot for um and what has it been like five or six years since they they beat us so
yeah it'd be good to go down there and get the victory hopefully yeah man uh thank you for
confirming exactly my uh i literally talked about this two days ago i was like iowa state just talks
a lot and i feel like if i'm an iowa football player i'm seeing that i'm thinking this is annoying why do you act like you're better than us you haven't beaten us in five years so
yeah yeah but like I said um I'm kind of slowly learning about all the rivalry games um but and
as you walk in um to the facility all the four trophies are there so um yeah it'd be good to
keep them there that's for sure definitely man man. And last year, Iowa did beat several teams they haven't beaten in a long time.
Penn State, Wisconsin.
Those were two big wins that Iowa kind of needed to get that monkey off their back.
What was the locker room like?
Were there a sense of relief or just like overall exuberation?
I mean, kind of what was that locker room like after those two wins?
I know after those two wins you just mentioned, um, there was obviously a lot of
emotion, um, from the coaches and, and certain players. Cause yeah, like you said, it'd certainly
been a while. Um, but yeah, there's no better place to be than, um, in the locker room after
a victory. Um, cause it's almost just makes it, um, all the hard work worth it. Um, but yeah,
there was a lot of, um, emotion, um, from a lot of coaches, which I think is
great.
That kind of made me realize like how much it means to people.
Um, cause it obviously mean, um, not being from here.
I really, yeah.
I've only really just grasped how, um, serious it is, I guess.
All right.
So I asked the question, you can just, you know,
plead the fifth.
Did Kirk cry after any of the games this year you won?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, there's photos online.
Yeah.
I was like, because I feel like he's kind of a crier.
Yeah.
When he's happy.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
I mean, he just, I mean, he just means the most to all of us and I know we mean a lot to him. So yeah,
there was a lot of emotion from not just him in the locker room, but yeah,
to answer your question. Yes.
Love him, man. That does it for a football question.
I have a couple of just personal questions.
Have you been to Casey's and have you been to come and go?
Have you eaten the pizza either? And do you have a preference?
No, I haven't been to Casey's go have you eat the pizza either and do you have a preference no i haven't been to casey's and i never will what yeah i'm not gonna waste my time having
gas station pizza i don't even care what anyone says or or how good they say it is it's not
happening and you are firing some shots okay um i mean i just don't understand how gas station
pizza can can taste nice I don't get it.
And I haven't had a – I don't know.
Have I been into a come and go?
I mean –
There's one over by the rec center there.
Yeah, I topped my moped up with gas there,
but I don't think I've ever really been inside, to be honest.
I just do it at the thing there.
So you'll never try Casey's Pizza?
I don't want to say never, but I'm in no rush.
Okay. So I live three, I live two hours and 58 minutes away from a Casey's Pizza. I know that because when I drive back to Iowa,
where all my family's at, I stopped there every single time and I hit every single cases I can
the whole way in to get as much of their pizza as possible. Unbelievable. I mean, what is it that
the, the, I'll let me guess you get the breakfast pizza or
whatever it's i don't i don't actually like breakfast pizza i don't like eggs i just love
the pepperoni man i like the pepperoni pizza i am a big pepperoni pizza man like i love
pepperoni pizza did you guys but i refuse to have it from a gas station man that's that hurts me
deep inside okay i can i can get by that so where is your favorite spot to go in iowa city to eat or drink i know you haven't had a chance to explore a lot because of covid but
that's a good question um i like i like basta a lot i love their pepperoni pizza
um so yeah i'd have to say basta pepperoni but but my favorite foods here, and I know people are
going to laugh at this, but I love the cereals here.
All right.
One more break before we finish up the show with part three, talking to Tori Taylor.
And just a reminder, if you are listening to the conversation with Tori for the first
time, make sure to check out yesterday's episode as well.
We had Tori on for that as well.
We do want to tell you about Built Bar though, the best tasting protein bar on the market today. The protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
Every single one of the protein bars are covered in 100% chocolate and they have flavors for
everyone. They got fruity like Cherry Barsia. They got sweet like, I'm drawing a blank here,
double chocolate. And they got salty as well. Lots of flavors they have on their docket. My
favorite is white chocolate birthday
cake with sprinkles and they do have grasshopper cookie, I think still available as well, which is
basically a thin mint cookie built bar. So make sure to check that out. But not only are these
built bars absolutely delicious, they are really good for you as well. 17 to 18 grams of protein,
calories ranging from 130 to 180, only four to five grams of sugar and only four to
five grams of net carbs you can get amazing taste and all the nutritional benefits that you are
looking for either for a midday pick-me-up a post-workout snack or just a breakfast replacement
that's what i use it for so go to builtbar.com to get your hands on these built bars right now
go to built.com and use the promo code locked 15 that's l-o-c-k-e-d-1-5 and you'll get
15 off your next order use the promo code locked 15 for 15 off at built.com
cereal yeah cinnamon toast crunches uh changed my life wait
yeah um wait so okay this i'm super ignorant about this you don't have cinnamon toast crunch
over in australia no we've got um cereal well you can actually get cinnamon toast crunch but
would you believe it i i told my family about it and they're like oh how do we get it i said
oh there's like you can go to all these international um stores and and get certain
candy or um chocolates or cereal or whatever um but they
went in there and it was like 16 or 17 dollars for a little small box of cinnamon toast crunch
and i was like we'll just just get it you got to try it and funnily enough they loved it but
it's a pretty expensive meal um 16 or 17 dollars for a bowl of cereal and it's what is it three or
four dollars here yeah um but yeah i
love my cereal so yeah cinnamon toast crunch just changed my life um have you ever had cinnamon
toast crunch with uh like marshmallow and make it into like a cinnamon toast crunch bar no i'm
actually not a big marshmallow person to be honest but um doesn't doesn't sound too bad actually
sounds more appealing than a casey pizza. That's for sure.
Man, you are just, uh, throwing some fighting words out, man.
Cinnamon toast.
That's the one thing you like the most.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, yeah, there's a lot of foods I like here.
I just, I'm just giving you crap, man.
Um, if you weren't playing football, what would you be?
Or sorry, if you weren't playing football, what is your favorite activity to be doing
outside of football?
I like playing golf.
It's been nice.
The weather's been nice and I can, I brought my golf clubs back over me.
So I like playing golf.
Cause if, if I could be any professional in any sport, it would probably be golf.
Okay.
Can you beat Keith?
Keith Duncan? Yeah, I can be golf. Okay. Can you beat Keith? Keith Duncan?
Yeah, I can beat Keith. Yeah. No worries.
Probably not, but I'll just say that anyway.
All right. I like it, man. And last question for you.
What, what do you want to tell the fans? Anything that you should,
they should know about you.
I know you haven't had a chance to talk to the media a ton,
tried to cover a lot, but also want to be respectful of your time time is there anything that you think you'd like to tell the fans about yourself
um oh i'm really not too sure just probably just the fact that i really appreciate everyone's love
um for specialists i mean we've got one of the best special teams i feel like in the country
um so yeah i'm really excited to see what happens this year but in terms of a message for
the fans probably just looking forward to seeing um everyone at the games and um like i said before
i'm a pretty reserved and quiet person but um i love meeting and chatting to new people so um
and i'm really if someone sends me a message or whatever i always um try and give the time to
reply so um yeah make sure you reach out. Cause like I said,
I love meeting new people and really appreciate everyone's love for myself and the rest of the
team. And I know we all do. Definitely, man. I do have to say this real quick,
Caleb Shudock. I feel like people are sleeping on him. Everything I've heard is that he is basically
just as good, if not, you know, the same level of talent as Keith Duncan so people
shouldn't be sleeping on him correct uh yeah I uh I might just say this Andrew he is I mean I don't
want to put any pressure on him but he is unbelievable and I think it would only take two
or three games into the season and I'm and I promise you I'm not just saying this for the sake
of saying it because he's like I'm I'm close him, and he's a teammate on the team. Like, he is unbelievable.
So, yeah, I think he's definitely a dark horse for being one of the better
kickers in the country for sure.
He's unbelievable.
Hopefully this time we – if he can get himself into a position,
he won't get screwed over by a kicker from Georgia for the Lou Groza.
Yeah, no.
Those bloody Georgia specialists, eh? Yeah, I feel so bad. over by a kicker from georgia for the lou groza yeah no those bloody those bloody georgia specialists
say yeah i uh i feel so bad i know rodrigo blankenship probably isn't a bad guy but i hate
him i just i really don't like him yeah there's just something about him uh sorry last question
for you uh is keith as and i've had keith on the show before he was a nice guy but uh that's
unfortunate yeah is he as loud and vibrant, I guess,
is a way to put it, in person or in practice as he is to the media?
I feel like he's got a nice guy.
No, not in practice.
I used to try and steer away from him in practice
because he's a pretty serious character.
I mean, we're all serious when we need to be.
But, yeah, he's always got something to say need to be um but yeah he's always got something
to say that's for sure he's always got something to say keith duncan but um yeah he's always up to
no good sometimes that dude that's funny yeah no he was uh he was a good guy to have on well tori
i've taken up uh almost 40 minutes of your time i appreciate it nonetheless man yeah no i appreciate
it and thanks again for having me on.
Yeah, man. We'll talk to you later and good luck for the rest of your season,
man. And if you got to try some Casey's pizza, man.
No, not, not going to happen. I'm sure the next time I speak to you,
I still wouldn't have done it. And I hope, I hope that, you know,
no Hawkeye fans jump off after hearing that, but yeah,
that's just the honest truth. So sorry guys.
I appreciate your honesty. When I'm in Iowa city, I'm going to shoot you a message and bring you a damn Casey's pizza and you're jump off after hearing that but um yeah that's just the honest truth so sorry guys i appreciate
your honesty uh when i'm in iowa city i'm gonna shoot you a message and bring you a damn casey's
pizza and you're gonna feel yeah it'll be it'll be going in the trash pretty quickly awesome well
