I know we did not have a show for you yesterday, but on today's episode, we are having Nick
McGlynn, former Drake Bulldog, Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
He is joining us on the show today to talk about his playing career, kind of what his
future intentions are, life at Drake University, and why he is excited to play with the Iowa United this
summer.
So this kind of continues that player profile series that we are doing in conjunction with
Iowa United's player profile series.
Nick McGlynn's profile is up this week.
They're doing a lot of great stuff on the Iowa United Facebook page and Twitter account
to let you get to know Nick McGlynn before he plays in the basketball tournament, the
$2 million winner-take-all tournament.
So that is coming up on today's episode.
Just a quick reminder that on past shows, we've had Matt Tybee,
UW-Milwaukee forward, currently playing overseas in Europe,
and is going to be on the Iowa United.
He was on the show.
We had Nicholas Bayer, six-man and do-it-all forward for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He was on the show a couple weeks ago.
We've also had a few recruits on the show.
Deuce Hogan, four-star quarterback recruit out of Dallas, Texas.
And Elijah Yelverton, a three-star tight end recruit out of Dallas, Texas as well.
They joined the show to talk to us about their recruiting experience with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And we had Marcus Fizer, former number four overall draft pick of the Chicago Bulls.
Former Iowa State Cyclone and a member of the Iowa United.
He was on the show last week to talk about his experience playing professionally.
I loved his candidness, his openness, his honesty.
It was a great episode, so make sure you tune into that one and all the other previous episodes.
We have a lot of great stuff coming up on the show as well, so make sure you do not miss that.
We have a few other 2020 recruits that are going to be on the show.
We have interviews with Drew Tate and Ricky Stanzi.
Drew Tate is actually coming up tomorrow and Thursday, so make sure to tune into those episodes.
We have a few other Drake players who are going to be playing on the Iowa United, including Josh Young and Reed Timmer.
And we have a lot of other great stuff in the works, So make sure to tune into all of our episodes going forward.

by former Drake Bulldog and Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Nick
McGlynn. Nick will be playing with the Iowa United this summer as they head to the basketball
tournament, a $2 million winner-take-all tournament. Nick, as a Drake alum and an Iowa native, I'm very excited to have you on the show today.
How are you doing today, buddy?
I'm doing well.
How are you?
Doing well, man.
It's Tuesday, so we're getting closer to the end of the week.
I know we've got a couple more days, but it feels like yesterday was pretty rough, man.
Yeah, and especially for me, the school is about to finish up so i'm really excited for that
absolutely did you get an opportunity to enjoy drake relays
i did um it was a it's always a good time uh campus always have the campus is always in a good mood. Yeah, I was able to take some time off and enjoy that.
I love it, man.
Yeah, Drake Relays is a blast.
I remember my freshman year, I asked one of the professors,
can we please just cancel class on Wednesday?
And he said, why?
And I said, Drake Relays.
And he said, all right, sounds good.
And I was like, well, that's how this is going to work.
Okay, cool.
This is fun.
that's how this is going to work okay cool this is fun
that's not
that's pretty characteristic of the entire
campus really they really just
don't expect
or
require attendance that week
absolutely yeah it's a nice thing for them to do
at least once a year so
well hey man great to
have you on the show.
I want to talk to you about, obviously, Drake basketball.
I talked to you about your post-collegiate basketball plans and then mostly the Iowa
United, but let's start with Drake.
Historically, or at least the last 10 years, Drake has kind of struggled.
Since they went to the NCAA tournament back in that 2007-2008 season, they haven't really
had a lot of success since.
What was it like for you this year? Obviously, I think Drake had a lot of success since. So what was it like for you this year?
Obviously, I think Drake had a lot of surprising success.
So what was it like for you as kind of the team leader of the Drake Bulldogs?
You know, it's really special because Drake's really special to me, at least.
You know, going through it for the first two years, last year kind of having it,
Going through it for the first two years, last year kind of having it,
and then this year really stepping it up and making a name for ourselves.
That was something that was really special to me personally,
is to see that progression, kind of see how the culture has shifted these past two years and even this year from last year.
these past two years and even this year from last year.
It means a lot to me, not just for the success for my personal career,
but the culture of Drake moving forward.
Absolutely.
I mean, the Drake Bulldogs couldn't have done it without you.
I mean, you were the team leader.
You left your career at Drake with 85 starts, 1,109 career points,
652 career rebounds, and 144 blocks. So overall, just an incredible career. And I think all of Drake Bulldogs community appreciates what you did for the program and helping be that instrumental
piece and turning that program around. So I think first off, just thank you. It's awesome to see
that. It was fun being
a Drake Bulldog this year and watching that team grow. And even last year, really under Nico,
they I think they did a great job and you guys grew a lot. So tell me quickly, you know, under
under Darian DeVries, what was that turnaround like? And do you feel like obviously it started
a little bit with Nico, but what did DeVries do that helped you guys go from, you know,
I think you were picked last in the MVC this year,
to being, you know, tied for the MVC champion?
It really boiled down to a certain level of autonomy that Coach allowed.
You know, obviously he had his schemes, he had his system.
He had good guys around us that preached that system to us.
But in terms of the intangibles, in terms of once we were out on the court,
Coach gave a lot of power to me, Norton, and Ellison to lead those guys
and gave a lot of power to the rest of the team just to play basketball and play how we can play.
So it was a really interesting system that he had,
especially come game time.
And it worked.
And it really allowed us to find our own rhythm with each other,
which really helped us down the stretch.
Yeah, that's what I noticed mostly.
Definitely.
And, I mean, to be honest, you guys suffered a ton of injuries,
a ton of setbacks throughout the year.
What was that like to overcome so many of those injuries?
I mean, starting with Connor Golsan's kind of gruesome injury very early in the year,
you lost Nick Norton partway
through the season, and then obviously you had
to bow out of the MVC tournament with
I believe it was a knee injury. So, what
was that like for your team to continue to battle
throughout the extreme
adversity, I would say?
I mean, that's
hard, for sure. I don't
I
struggle to figure out a season in which that was the case the whole way through.
And even those guys that took them out for the rest of the season,
Liam was out for a couple games, I know Mel was out for a couple games,
and there's just a bunch of
things that we just had to adjust to. And that adaptability was a key factor of our
victory, even when everybody was healthy. We all know that once we get to game time,
all bets are off. You can have the best scout in the world,
and then something else is going to throw a curveball at you,
and you've got to be able to adjust.
So that's what we were able to do even when everyone was healthy.
And so when one guy went down, we were able to make the adjustment pretty quickly.
Absolutely, man.
And kind of speaking of adjustments,
you've had to make quite a few adjustments
in your career with the Bulldogs.
You've had a plethora of coaches
come through the system.
What has that been like for you?
I mean, I'm assuming that's been difficult.
And then tell me a little bit about
kind of which, if you don't mind,
you don't have to,
but was DeVries your favorite coach to play under
out of all those coaches you've kind of been under
over the past four years?
Yeah, I mean, having a progression um like I said before the progression to see um with each coach um is very interesting very um very educational for me I think that it really helped me grow as a player.
Each coach definitely had their part in that.
You know, it's hard to pick a favorite.
I don't think I can pick a favorite.
Right, yeah, like it's just everyone that I've had, I'm thankful for, and I'm thankful for all the lessons people bestowed upon myself personally
and the team in general.
It's really interesting because I am – I talk to –
I know Coach Rudder, Jeff Rudder, he talks to my family periodically.
Great man.
I talked to some of the guys that were on the staff last year still today
because some of them have been helping me through my post-grad plans.
It's just been a lot of
great and knowledgeable
coaches in my career and I can't be more
thankful.
That was a great answer.
Talk a little bit about those post-collegiate basketball plans.
What are your plans?
Are you going to go overseas?
What's the deal?
That's the goal.
That's what I'm going to try to's what I'm going to try to do.
I'm going to try to play basketball as long as I can still.
You know, the game's still fun for me.
The game, I feel like I'm still learning a lot in the game.
I think that I still have some of my best basketball ahead of me. So I think that playing overseas is the best move for me.
And I still don't know where I'm going to land.
I still have some things to work out in the front.
But yeah, I'm very sure that I still have a lot more in me.
I love it, man. Absolutely. And one of the things you're going to be doing, I can, I can, I can, have you heard of the basketball tournament in the past? And what was kind of the excitement level?
And what was your initial thoughts when you heard about the Iowa United?
I was, I was pumped.
They, I have heard of the basketball tournament before.
Every time, every year I'm here, you know, June and July turned into kind of a,
actually, sorry, June and July turned into kind of a –
sorry, July and August mostly because the finals are in June.
But once the finals are over, you kind of have that dead period.
Basketball on TV, there's no college basketball,
barely any NBA games, so you have that dead period.
And when you're here in the summer working out,
you kind of can't get enough of that basketball.
And then the basketball tournament started a couple years ago,
and that's when we started watching that periodically.
So when I got the call from Matt to say,
hey, we got a team and we want you to be on it,
I didn't feel like I fit, you know.
I felt like it was a tournament for, you know,
past collegiate and NBA legends and, like,
guys that are playing in the EuroLeague.
And, like, it was kind of weird to put myself in those categories, you know.
So, I mean, I'm very excited to put myself in those categories.
I'm very excited to be a part of it, and I'm super excited to get started on it.
Yeah, man.
You put that very humbly, but I do think you absolutely fit, man.
Your senior year at Drake, you averaged 15.2 points a game, 1.7 blocks, 1.4 assists, 8.3 rebounds, and you shot 61.5% from the field.
So those are pretty impressive numbers to go along with the fact that you were first team all-MVC and you were MVC Defensive Player of the Year.
I mean, don't be too humble, man.
You definitely fit on this team, and I'm excited to watch you play at the Iowa United.
I know Matt is very excited to see you play.
As far as the players on that team, there's some older guys. You have Marcus Fizer, you have
Tyrus McGee, Josh Young. Are you excited to learn from some of those guys who have been
there, done that, and played professional basketball?
Absolutely. I think that, to be completely fair and completely honest,
so I'm a Wisconsin guy.
So we didn't have any, like, Big 12 guys or, you know, around me. So Iowa State kind of gets lost on me after a while.
So Marcus Fizer is not a name that I'm super familiar with. Tyrus Fizer is not a name that I'm super familiar with.
Tyrus McGee is not a name that I'm super familiar with.
I mean, Matt talks them up a lot.
So, I mean, I don't doubt that they're great players.
Marcus Fizer in particular I'm excited to work with and get to learn from.
And obviously I've met Josh before.
He's a great guy, great teacher, great player, obviously.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
I'm super excited for it.
Yeah, I love the honesty there.
I 100% get that.
You're kind of in Big Ten country in Wisconsin.
And what was that like? I mean, being from Wisconsin, you kind of grew up. I 100% get that. You're kind of in Big Ten country in Wisconsin. And what was that like?
I mean, being from Wisconsin, you kind of grew up in the Badgers' backyard.
Did you dream of playing for the Badgers?
Or were they involved at all in that recruiting process before you ended up committing to Drake?
I wasn't good enough.
I wasn't good enough.
They,
they,
they, they,
that was a really interesting class for them.
But when I was little,
obviously,
you know,
I dreamed about being a Badger.
Went to a bunch of their games back then,
back in the day.
You know,
I was a,
you know,
getting to,
I was a obscure Badger fan.
You can take me through the rosters.
I can point out the players that I used to watch,
not just Clay Kaminsky and Sam Decker,
but like Jared Bergeron, Trevon Hughes, Cameron Taylor.
We can go all the way back there.
So when I was going through the recruiting process, I was hoping for it.
I actually played with current Badger, Brevin Pritzel.
So I was the guard and close at some of those games.
But lo and behold, it didn't work out.
They were off to me, so it's a look and a good fit.
Yeah, I think it all ended up working out pretty well,
getting an opportunity to play for Drake
and leaving there as one of the best players of all time.
So, like I said, very glad you came to Drake
and excited you are there as well.
As far as how your off-season training plan is, are you going to be heading back up to
that area?
Are you going to be sticking around Des Moines and playing in the Cap City League?
What is your plan?
I think I'm going to stick around.
I don't know.
I'm still unsure if Cap City is going to be in my state, but I plan on staying in Hey, Nick, you're cutting out there a little bit, buddy.
I just plan on being around here.
Unsure what I'm going to do with it,
but I've gotten as far as to where I'm going to be based out of.
Awesome, man.
Well, that'll be exciting.
So tell me quickly, I guess not quickly,
but tell me what award means the most to you.
So obviously MVC, Defensive Player of the Year,
you're a Scholar Athlete of the Year,
first team all MVC.
Do any of those awards stand out to you?
You know, it's hard to say
because when I was a freshman, even when I was a sophomore,
those records, those awards seemed pretty, you know, not out of reach, but a tall task.
So I always kept my head down, tried to work on my own game. And maybe one day, like, put myself in a position
to be an impactful player just straight.
So once the dust settled and once we got out of the –
once we got through all that season, just the numbers kind of –
I just wanted the numbers to speak for themselves,
and pretty much did right at the end there.
So, you know, I'm very thankful, very humbled by it.
I know, I mean, there's a lot of people to thank other than, you know, myself.
So not one award really stands out.
And not one award really stands out.
It's just, you know, as an accumulation,
it really spoke to my consistency over four years and my progression.
It really showed, and that's what I'm proud of.
I love it, man.
And as far as the Iowa United goes,
because people are going to be listening to this podcast,
they're going to want to know and get to know you as a player,
and a lot of people probably haven't seen you play as much.
I mean, Drake isn't on national television like Iowa or Iowa State typically are.
So tell the people listening to the show, what do you bring to the Iowa United?
I mean, I know what you bring, and I'm really excited,
but if you had to define your game
what would it be like when you come on the Iowa United um if there's one thing I'd want uh people
to recognize and people to appreciate about my game uh it's definitely the uh level of intensity
and a level of passion I bring um you know I I want to make myself, give myself a reputation of being a workhorse.
I want to, you know, grab a bunch of rebounds, get involved in a bunch of plays.
But most of all, like, when you see me, you're going to see that motor running.
You know, you're going to see me getting excited over every play
to a point that I might annoy a couple of my teammates,
but that might be okay.
But yeah, that's kind of where I hang my hat on,
is my enthusiasm and my intensity.
Well, one guy, based off that description, man, doesn't sound like you're gonna annoy nicholas bayer um you two i feel like those are the both
you guys bring that level of intensity and energy and um you know defensive ability so that'll be
kind of fun watching you two play together um are you very familiar with nicholas oh yeah yeah we get to play them
every other year
and I can't
remember if he redshirted
when he was a year older or if he's the same
he redshirted
so he was a class
younger than me
but yeah I got to play him both times
we played the Hawkeyes
and yeah I think that he did his role well because But yeah, I got to play him both times. We played the Hawkeyes.
Yeah, I think that he did his role well because every time we played him,
he annoyed the crap out of me.
So glad to have him on your side this time.
Right, yeah.
He's a great guy to have on your team,
a horrible guy to play against.
So I think that's a pretty good sign of who he is.
I'm excited to play with him.
You can recognize how hard he works.
Well, again, like me, the progression of over four years that he had.
Five years, I suppose.
So, yeah, he's a guy I'm excited for, for sure.
That was probably the best way to describe him,
a guy that you love to have on your team and you hate to have on the other team.
So definitely appreciated that.
Another guy that you are very familiar with is Reed Timmer.
Are you excited to play with him again?
Oh, absolutely.
You know, Reed's my guy.
Played with him for three years
yeah I know
I like
love him as a player love him as a
person you know he's gonna be
he's gonna be a lot of fun to be around again
he's gonna
I know
that he and Josh
together they really push each
other so that'll be a I know that he and Josh together, they really push each other.
So that'll be a fun dynamic to be around,
especially on a team for the first time.
I've never been on a competitive team with Josh,
much less Josh and Reed on the same team. So that'll be a lot of fun to watch unfold.
Definitely.
And as far as the Drake community goes, at least on campus,
do you have a sense that people are starting to realize
what the Iowa United really is as a team?
And are they getting excited and hyped?
I think, like I said, from an alumni perspective,
I'm really excited to watch you guys play.
Talking to all my buddies back from school, they're really excited to watch you guys play. What is the all my buddies back from school they're really excited to watch you guys play what is the feeling on campus have you kind
of gotten any buzz from anyone uh some of the uh the alumni had approached me about it um it really
is it it really isn't like the preliminary stages here. You know, it's obviously an exciting opportunity,
not just for me but for the entire Drake alumni to watch
and to see everybody from Iowa come together like that
because you know as well as anybody,
when you go to Drake,
most people are not just Drake fans.
You're from Des Moines,
you're probably an Iowa State fan too.
If you're from Cedar Rapids or Johnson Plus,
you might be a little more
Iowa fan.
It depends on where you're
from. You even get...
I even had some people on
campus that are UNI fans.
Drake fans. I have
no idea how that's possible.
See, I get the Iowa-Iowa State thing,
but the Panther and Bulldog
thing, I don't get that.
Yeah, I don't the the panda and bulldog thing I just I don't get that yeah I don't get it either uh but uh no yeah so you you know that like it's gonna it's gonna be a lot of fun for a lot of alumni not just for being Drake fans and Drake
alumni but being an Iowa basketball fan and watching all these guys come together
and create something really special.
Yeah, man, I'm certainly excited.
Well, I've taken up a lot of your time.
I just have five quick get-to-know-you type of questions.
I know this is kind of the theme of your week when that comes up.
So favorite place to eat on campus,
or if you want to divulge, goto as far as late-night activities.
I know there's not a ton of eating options around campus.
So if you had to pick one or the other, kind of what would be your go-to spot?
I love that because you know as well as anybody that there's basically nowhere on campus to eat.
It's like McDonald's and that's about it.
There's basically nowhere on campus to eat.
It's like McDonald's, and that's about it.
Right.
There is a place a little off campus, but it's still relatively close.
It's a place called Fernando's.
You probably remember it.
It's a place right off, like Howard Hall, right on the edge of campus.
It's just half a block that way.
Basically a Chipotle, Cordova-type place.
But it's just, to me, it's better ingredients because it's locally owned.
So it'll have better ingredients on the burritos and stuff.
It's just delicious.
Love that spot.
Well, Nick, you're making me feel a little old, man,
because I don't think Fernando's is around.
I lived right over there, and I don't remember anything like that.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
It might not have been.
I have no idea.
It's been there for a little while, but I don't know how just keep it coming man just keep making those age jokes now um my my favorite was pretty much jethro's and mcdonald's and that
was and you know obviously the uh jimmy john's day old bread was a great late night snack
all right jethro's obviously too yeah that Yeah. That's funny, man. Well, favorite
superhero, and obviously with the Avengers
Endgame, I thought that was a good theme, but then I talked
to Matt Tybee, and he likes
supervillains, so you're really open to
whatever you want there, but superhero,
supervillain, whichever you want, which would be your favorite,
man?
I love these last two movies
that weren't the Avenger movies,
Captain Marvel and Black
Panther.
Captain Marvel is just incredible.
I had never heard of her before.
So I think, like, right now I'm riding high on the Captain Marvel train.
That is a crazy.
Yeah, dude, she's badass.
She's a crazy power.
Yeah.
Right.
I didn't realize how incredible she was.
And then she basically came in to the end of Endgame and just crushed people and then left.
I'm like, all right, cool.
Where were you at this whole time?
Right, yeah, exactly.
So I'm right behind Captain Marvel.
I can get on board with that.
Very much as a bandwagon fan, but I don't mind it too much.
Captain Marvel needs her love too.
I feel like not a lot of people, like you said, knew who she was
or what she did until about a month and a half ago.
So I think she needs some support as well.
Absolutely.
Favorite pump-up song?
When you're getting ready for a basketball game, what do you listen to?
I'm a big Kend Kevin Lamar fan.
All right.
That was a big thing for me.
Obviously, he hasn't had a lot of new stuff lately.
Some stuff of the Black Panther soundtrack actually helps me out.
um but yeah
I think
I think you can't go wrong
um
with uh
um
Kendrick Lamar
pretty much anything
yeah the Black
the Black
yeah the Black Panther album
has some pretty good songs man
right
I mean that's his newest stuff
and that's
not all
not all of it's him
uh
but you know
the Damn album
has got some good songs.
To Pimp a Butterfly, to me, is one of the best albums I've ever listened to.
So, you know, you can't really go wrong with him, in my mind.
Yeah, high praise for Kendrick Lamar.
All right.
And then your favorite memory of Drake.
Doesn't have to be basketball.
It could be basketball, whatever you want.
Oh, my God. Drake? It doesn't have to be basketball. It could be basketball, whatever you want. Oh my
God. I mean,
you can't
beat that
Missouri State game this year
when we won conference.
That feeling,
that is a
feeling you can't replicate.
That's something.
I talked to
him when we had our like
basketball banquet and um you know brady ellison i've known since like the start of the summer
like even even him as a wisconsin guy I really didn't really know him until he came here this summer.
So I haven't even known him for a year yet.
And when that buzzer sounded at Missouri State, when we won,
he came over to me and we gave him a huge hug.
Just embraced the whole moment.
hug, like, just like, just embrace the whole moment, just, you know, feeling that I felt on the basketball court ever.
So to see that the chemistry between everybody, not just him, but everybody on that team,
and everybody, not just him, but everybody on that team,
culminate in such a real, authentic way was just really special to me.
Absolutely, man.
I mean, it's a lot of hard work.
You kind of grinded for four years.
The Bulldogs were not at a very high point when you joined the program, and you brought them to a Missouri Valley Conference title,
which is absolutely incredible and something, you know, a season that Bulldog
fans are not going to forget anytime soon.
So awesome stuff all around.
Yeah, it's just, that's incredible.
Definitely, man.
Well, hey, dude, I think that's going to cover it for today.
I appreciate you jumping on the show.
I enjoyed talking again to another Drake kid.
Obviously, I'm a little bit older and don't remember Fernandos,
and that was a little bit depressing to kind of remember.
But I definitely appreciate you on the show.
I'm excited to watch you play with the Iowa United this summer.
I'm excited to see kind of you ingrained into that program
and working with those guys,
and obviously see you, Josh, and Reed playing together.
So it'll be a lot of fun.
Any last second words that you want to give to any of the people
that are going to be listening to this show?
Not really. I pretty much said it all.
I'm excited to get started with the Iowa United stuff and, you know, go Bulldogs.
I love it, man.
Well, good luck on your finals, buddy, And we will talk to you Later this summer probably
Alright sounds good
Awesome talk to you later Nick
Alright and that concludes
Our episode for today
I hope you enjoyed
The interview with Nick McGlynn
I'm really excited
To watch him play
For the Iowa United
Being a Drake alum
I enjoyed watching him
Play with the Drake Bulldogs
Excited to see the energy
The tenacity he brings
On the defensive side
Of the floor
And obviously I'm excited
To see kind of the growth that he experiences
playing under Marcus Fizer.
One of the big things I talked to Marcus Fizer about was the fact that he's
open and willing and excited about coaching some of these younger guys,
especially, you know, the Nick McGlins.
I'm also excited to see Nick and Nicholas Bayer play together.
As you heard on the show, you know, Nick is familiar with Nicholas.
He's excited to not be on the opposing end
of the floor against him.
So that'll be fun to watch all those guys come together.
And that's one of the things that I personally really love
about the Iowa United.
It's bringing together well-known players
from all the schools.
So really the entire state can get behind
and back those teams,
which is gonna be really fun and exciting.
We also have a few updates to come for the Iowa United coming probably later this week,
potentially next week from Matthew Crawford, the GM of the Iowa United himself.
So he's going to be joining the show and talking to us about a few changes coming to that team.
So like we've been doing, we're going to keep doing these player profiles next week and
the weeks to come.
We also have Matthew Crawford coming on.
Tomorrow we have Drew Tate coming on,
as well as Thursday, we'll have Drew Tate's
kind of part two of his interview.
It was a lengthy conversation, really enjoyed it,
so I'll make sure I share the full scope
of that conversation with you.
