Why that's going to be a big difference maker for the defense in 2025.

For 50% off your first year. It is the off season
We are getting though plenty of availability, which is good news to help out the machine feed the beast in the content machine
That happens here during the off season. Yes
We don't have any games going on but we have plenty to talk about and we will continue to do that today
The first women's basketball media availability was held earlier the day
We will get into that
We'll also be joined by John Bowen camp the day before he was in Iowa City for the men's basketball
Media availability and talk a lot of Iowa hoops with John Bowen camp from the Associated Press
Plus we heard from Iowa football players yesterday and some news and notes from that
In fact, that's where we begin today's conversation as yesterday
The assembled media was over in Iowa City now
Unfortunately for me it was right in the middle of my radio show
So wasn't able to make that one happen
But a listening through a bunch of the different interviews that are out there Tom Kaker from Hawker report
always doing a great job and being able to at least look through and listen and watch a money of these different videos and
Couple of takeaways starting with Aaron Graves,
getting married, so they had some fun with that.
But talking about the defensive tackle position.
And really, that's where I want to begin
today's conversation about this football team.
And we talked about the step back
that they took defensively a year ago.
And there are plenty of reasons for it.
The safety position was not up to par.
Now we have Xavier Wampa
moving over to the free safety position. And the anticipation is that's going to lead to a big step forward.
Trying to place Cooper Dejean. What happened at quarterback and the disappointment that
happened out there as they were trying a bunch of different guys to try to make that happen.
You know, there's so many different angles here. But one thing I keep going back to is
this defensive line. And when you look at this defensive front,
and specifically in the middle of defensive tackle,
you lose Y.A. Black.
And Y.A. Black in Iowa's scheme's not gonna rack up
a ton of tackles, not gonna be a guy that's gonna have
a ton of tackles for a loss, but he is going to occupy space
and just a monster of a man.
I mean, that dude filled in the gaps and allowed J. Higgins
and Nick Jackson behind him to
make tackles all over the place.
That's what he was able to do.
But you look at Aaron Graves and you know, I mentioned last week when he was up for or
Phil Steele had him nominated for an All-American team, but the counting stats were even better
than I remember from a year ago.
That was just about that consistency, being able to give those kinds of performances game in and game out, taking that final step in his final season.
Eric Graves has all the upside you could hope for, and
it still feels like he's just scratching the surface of what he still can be.
At the defensive tackle spot, we got to see Jeremiah Pittman last year and
he was in that reserve role playing a little bit more.
He had surgery this off season, he's working his way back, but
he's a guy who anticipates going to be a big part.
But what I would did going into the transfer portal, something that they didn't
bring a ton of guys, but one place they looked specifically was the defensive
tackle position.
You start bringing in Jonah pace from central Michigan, 20 tackles,
four sacks last year, occupier guy that knows how to play at a D1 level even
in the Mac, and you hope at minimum there's a rotational piece.
But maybe the biggest grab on the defense very well might prove to be Bryce Hawthorne.
So Hawthorne comes in from South Dakota State.
And as we've mentioned before, and every day as you know it as I brought this up
Hawthorne was looked at as that developmental guy
The pace will be the guy for this year and then after that maybe Hawthorne builds into that role
From what they saw early on in him the expectations have gone up
The expectations for Bryce Hawthorne is he's definitely gonna be in the rotation and a little bit more
You got a couple of veterans there also guys that have been around now in the redshirt junior years and Hubert and Gaffney
I will see if either those guys are are able to add anything more
But on the ends with her cat and Llewellyn
We saw a little bit of merry weather and also remember that big defensive line class that they brought in a year ago
That defense a line class that we talked plenty about
Now there any guys
out of this group that can make an impact right away? Well, with what they returned
a year ago, that was highly unlikely. And we saw that. But a lot of guys with a lot
of talent and it fell bloodlines from dad. I mean, there's, there's plenty to be excited
about out of that group from the guys that redshirted a season ago from
Joseph Anderson, who a lot of people really like his upside and what he's still going
to be.
What do you look forward and what he's going to be able to help out?
Now, can Brad Fitzgibbon be one of those guys in the middle that builds himself into something
in his first season?
I mentioned obviously, you'll say Eppinesa coming in this year in that freshman class
and Eppinesa, though, a outside Outside guy does he build into an inside guy?
I think that's something you definitely have to take a look at but back to the redshirt freshman in Shaneeke
Anderson even Drew Campbell Devin Kennedy speaking of NFL bloodlines with Jimmy Kennedy his dad out of Penn State that group of guys
Can one of those guys hit this year because if that happens suddenly?
of guys can one of those guys hit this year because if that happens suddenly
this defensive tackle group and overall this defensive line group goes from that should be all right to really really good you saw Llewellyn I mean that guy is a man possessed and Llewellyn
had offers from the SEC to come to the portal he wasn't biting he stuck around gonna be a hawk
guy for his final season that dude's gonna be able to get to the quarterback, the Rappinesa into the mix, Perkett, another guy, Merriweather.
Just on and on and on.
The amount of depth that they're accumulating at this defensive line,
I think is going to take it to another level.
And there's still guys to be excited about that we've seen,
that have played, that have been out there, that have made plays.
There's a lot of excitement up front.
Football's played up front.
And Iowa has a chance to be good up there,
really good there in 2025.
Let's talk some basketball.
John Bowencamp from the Associated Press
is gonna join us.
We'll take a look at Iowa media availability.
Here from Ben McCollum.
I'll throw in a little shade as we mentioned yesterday
against the Cyclones.
But we're gonna dive in a little bit more
to this basketball team.
John's been covering hoops for a number of years get his thoughts and his perspective on that plus
We'll talk a little more football from the Associated Press. He is John Bowen camp
He joins us next on the locked-on Hawkeyes podcast

We welcome in the self-proclaimed wise owl on the Iowa Hawkeye beat
He is John Boehmamp from the Associated Press,
Iowa College Basketball News and a whole lot more.
What's happening, John?
Not much.
I'm doing well.
So yesterday, a little media availability.
You guys got some open practice last week.
Ben McCollum, working the masses, right?
And working you guys on the beat a little bit
and being able to see this team, talk to some guys,
building those relationships relationships all very important as you look to rebuild this program back up.
Before we kind of get into a few ins and outs, going back to the hiring, getting Ben McCollum
to come here as we found out more and more about his background, being born in Iowa City, growing
up such a big Hawkeye fan and the way that it feels like he's really endeared himself well
to the program and then he took it a step further and made a little subtle jab to our friends up in
Aves. Feels like he is pushing all the right buttons here in the first couple months on the job.
Yeah, I mean, you know, we talked about that back when he was hired and I said, you know,
you always want to win the press conference, but you're going to have to win on the court, obviously.
But he has not only won the press conference, he has won the last couple
of months in terms of putting together this roster, you know, going out, you
know, the, the I club events, which for some reason they don't have one in
Southeast Iowa, um, which I'll call it a complaint for another day. Yes. But, um, but, um, but anyway, but I mean, he, he's out there, you know, and he's in,
and, and he's, and then again, the little jab yesterday at, at, at the rival.
Um, I, I just really liked what he has done.
And you know, and I mean, obviously, you know, he had a lot of right, you know, he
had a lot of right buttons today that he was hired.
And he mentioned guys that, you know, you can tell he understood the history of Iowa
basketball.
You know, it's easy to say BJ Armstrong and you know, those kinds of guys, but when you're
bringing up Val Barnes, his name and so on, you know, the history of the, of the, of the
program.
So I like what he has done.
I, you know, and I've said this before, I like
this roster he's put together in listening to the guys last week and this week. I like
what they're saying of how this summer is going. And I mean, so I think where they're
at right now is a really good place, you know, as you get into later into the summer and
get into the fall, you look at this roster and you can definitely see that there's holes that still could be filled.
He talked a little bit about that of searching in the market.
I think the part of that quote though that maybe opened my eyes a little bit more.
He was talking about the international market.
We know they've kicked the tires on a few different guys out there.
Some other ones that might be out there as though the portal is pretty well picked over at this point.
But he also mentioned reclassifying.
Did you take it as him just mentioning different avenues that they can go?
Or do we read into it that maybe they do have somebody in mind that could
reclassify and come a year early?
I do think it was probably just, these are all the different avenues available.
You know, he mentioned the international players,
which, you know, right now, like Illinois is having
a problem getting a couple of their players, I think.
You know, so I don't know if right now
that's a good way to go,
because you may not be able to get them in.
But, you know, I mean, obviously there's a lot of ways
to go to fill this.
And I said this back when they were looking
to fill the roster, I said, you know, everybody kept talking about the transfer portal.
I'm like, you know, there's other places and, you know, and maybe he, and he didn't mention it
yesterday. Maybe they look at a Juco guy that's still available. And trust me, there are some of
those guys out there and you know, they may be looking for a certain piece, you know, and, and,
and they may be looking for some size.
Everybody wants size, you know, on their team.
So that might be kind of hard to find.
But I mean, obviously they're going to look for maybe that one last piece of his roster
and then he'll look anywhere to find it.
One guy that you guys didn't get an opportunity to see last week in the open practice was
Alvaro Fulgueras, who's over with one of the Spanish national teams, or heard so many good things. And somebody
that I talked to that does a lot of scouting out East mentioned that he is going to be
a great fit for them, but he's not a typical five. I mean, he might be playing power forward.
What we saw from Manwa and I know you watch a lot of Missouri Valley Conference basketball
also is a guy that played 20 minutes a game last year. It's one thing to do it in the MVC. It'll be a different doing it in the big 10.
How equipped are they inside with their bigs?
You know, I think they're okay.
Again, you got to kind of look sometimes around the league and see what everybody else has,
you know, and I think where they're at, I think they're in a pretty good place,
but I still think they could probably use a little more size.
And again, going back to what we were just talking about, maybe that's what they're looking
for right now.
You know, a, a true, you know, really big, powerful, you know, inside guy, a big power
for, or, or a center.
I don't know how many of those are still out there right now, but I mean, obviously they,
they want to look for something like that, but I do think they're in pretty good shape
there. And again, they're want to look for something like that, but I do think they're in pretty good shape there.
And again, they're going to run the ball.
They're going to, they're going to, they're going to,
they're going to be getting up and down the court.
They're going to be shooting threes, that sort of thing.
I don't know necessarily if it's an issue right now.
We'll find out when big 10 play starts.
But I think right now,
I do think they're in pretty good shape right now.
You saw Trevin Yurok and that might be a guy that could help out this season,
not for long stretches, but can he give them 10, 12 minutes a game,
something like that?
What have you seen out of Yurok, the kid from here in West Des Moines Valley?
I liked what I saw last week.
I mean, I thought he looked equipped to play the game,
and if they needed him for 15 or 20 minutes.
With high school guys, sometimes when they get in there with the older players, and he
does have a lot of older players in his team, you can kind of see that age difference.
But I didn't really see that last week.
I saw a guy that, like you said, can give them 10 to 15 minutes, do a lot of good things.
Obviously, he's going to have to get stronger.
It is a different game than what he has played in high school.
But again, you've got time to do that and listening to the players talk,
they really are hitting the weight room.
And so I mean, he'll develop over time, but I do think he's in a really good place
right now to start the season that he can be a key part of this rotation.
This group, where's your expectations for them right now to start the season that he can be a key part of this rotation. This group, where's your expectations for them right now?
When you look at the squad, the way they're constructed, is it an NCAA
tournament team or is that even too much hope in your number one?
No, I think, I think, you know, when you look back to, you know, maybe five,
10 years ago, you know, first year coach is coming in.
It's really hard to get to the tournament.
Now it's not.
And you look at the guys he's brought in, he brought in six guys from the team that
won 31 games and, and made it to the tournament, one it's conference.
These guys know how to win.
You added some pieces around them, guys who know how to win.
You added some young kids who, you know, who have come from winning progress. These guys know how to win and that is a big deal sometimes with college basketball
or ostrich. I don't think it's out of, you know, and I've said this before, I don't
think it's out of the realm to think that they can get the end of the tournament, finish
in that top eight or nine in the big 10. A lot of things will have to go right. There's
going to have to be some development. There's going to have to be some air base. You're
going to have to find their role.
You know, you don't want to be searching for that, you know, in the end of
December and January. But I do think this roster is equipped to get them to
the end of the tournament. How long they last, I don't know what kind of thing,
but I do think this is the team that can get there. Some news coming down
met Norlander from CBS Sports had it that the NCAA is increasing
the number of regular season games from 31 to 32. Of course the hope that goes
along with it it'll lead to more high-profile non-conference games
coming. Anything that you read into this an extra game let's hope it's not
Mississippi Valley State and it's a matchup against Mississippi.
Yeah I mean I think that's gonna be kind of the hope of doing that, but this
is a revenue grab. This is like he said, this is, this is power conference teams getting
and wanting to get another home game, you know, whether it's against, you know, another
power conference team or another cupcake, that's going to depend on the coach. But I
do think that, that, that it is a big deal for this because I do think
you're just getting one more game.
And one of the things they brought up is playing a non-conference game during the
conference schedule, you know, Illinois did that last year and I think they're
doing it again this year.
Um, a lot of times, you know, that kind of went away.
I mean, I remember back in the eighties and nins, you know, Iowa, Iowa played do you know, and then what, and well, and, and so I,
I think maybe that's kind of what they're wanting this to be is to play
another power conference team in January and February,
if you've got an open date makes sense. So I, I, yeah.
And so I think that's what they're wanting to do with it.
Let's hope that is the case. Now from the good news and extra game,
we're not going gonna argue about that.
Extra games of the NCAA tournament
and expending this thing out to 72 or 76.
John, do you read it at a point, this is gonna happen,
kicking and screaming all we want,
this is going to happen either 72 or 76.
I'm afraid it's gonna happen
because I think they want that Tuesday and Wednesday
TV windows, I think they want an all day thing there.
But you know, they keep talking.
It was so funny to listen to them talk about when they were trying to explain
this and they brought up the Indiana state team that didn't make it a couple
of years ago and I'm like, you guys aren't doing this to help Indiana state.
You know, you're not doing this to help a Valley school.
You're doing this to get it, you know, to get a, an 18 and 12 Vanderbilt team, you know, or Ole Miss or somebody like that.
It is just, you know, or, or to lump all those 16 seeds and 15 seeds into that
first game, so you're not dealing with them on the weekend, you know, the OVC
champion and the summit league champion and making them play an extra game.
That's where I think this is going with this.
I don't think it, you know, took out of the goodness of their heart
to help those mid-major teams that are really good.
What football question for you and just in general, as we go through this off season,
you guys get availability, got Big Ten, media days, Iowa media days
will lead up to the season.
It's a long build up to get there.
Just where you sit on June 25th, when you look at this football team for this
season, 2025 only kind of where you are when you look overall at the program.
Probably better than what a lot of people think.
I mean, I, I, and it's in my mind that what makes that much makes me say that
is Mark Grunowski, you know, I mean, I know where he came from.
I know how he can play.
And I just think this is their best quarterback
they've had in a while.
And if they can protect him and I think they can,
if he's got the pieces around him and the receivers
and then running backs, which I think he does,
I think this is a very good offense.
You know, to me, the biggest question is, question is, who kind of emerges on defense right now?
Who's that Jay Higg, who's that Nick Jackson, those kind of guys.
But offensively, I think they're in a really good place right now.
And getting back to the quarterback thing, I think they're in a really good place in
not just the starting quarterback, but the backup quarterback.
And so I just, I just think
this offense is in a better place now under Tim West and I just, that to me gives me some confidence
about this team. You still like watching the Dodgers play? Oh, it's just fun. You know, I mean,
when you get to watch excellent night in night out, you know, you can't, you gotta do it. And I mean,
it's starting to become a runaway now
There's a cream. I always think cream comes to top cream is there now in June. Oh
Boy, it's a different life than I certainly leave. Hey Jack Dreier. He got he was the opener of what last night
Of the season. What do you seen from the former Hawkeye and the Johnston Dragon Jack Dreier?
He's been really good. I mean, I mean, he,
you know, he's been that kind of, he's been that middle guy when they've had to do these bullpen
games. He's been the starter. And I think that's kind of a good experience thing for him. But you
know, he's had a couple of bad outings here there, but on a consistent basis, he's been really good.
And he's been that middle guy that they've needed.
And he's been a surprise. I mean, at the beginning of the year, I mean,
doing back in February, he didn't think much of his chances and he's gotten the chance. He's made
the most of it. He's got good stuff. He throws strikes and that's what you want out of that
out of that position and what he does Fast-forward to the middle of October you and your Dodgers are back in the NLCS on the other side
I'm gonna give you two options either
team from the East the Phillies or the Mets or a
Team from the West the Giants or the Padres who would you rather see in an NLCS?
I mean, I'm not scared of any of them, but I just, I would rather play the NL East
East because I hate playing the Padres of their little brother act and the
giants are the giants, you know?
And, and, and it's like, I don't want seven games of the little brother act.
It's like, I would rather play the Mets Billy straight up.
And I mean, there's no rivalry there. It's just baseball and it's the Mets, Billy straight up. And I mean, there's
no rivalry there. It's just baseball and it's, you know, and it's in all the other stuff
that goes along with it wouldn't be there. But that's what I want. It's not going to
be anybody from the NL Central. So I'm not worried about that.
Oh, look at that shots fired and John Boyncamp saying that Padres and the Giants are little
brats. I think you're scared of them. I think that's what it is.
I'm not worried about that. I don't see it about the Giants. The Padres are little brats.
Okay. Hey, John, appreciate the time. It's always good to catch it up with you.
Thanks. Have a good one. You too. John Bowencamp from the Associated Press. Check it in with us.

One thing we haven't talked a ton about here recently
is the Iowa women's basketball team.
They did some work in the portal, bringing Addie Deal.
What's this team gonna look like?
We got our first look, we'll talk about that next
little women's hoops talk when we come back
on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.

Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Let's talk a
little hoops, women's hoops. We've talked a lot of men here the last couple of
days. Add some media availability. Women's basketball team with their first of the season.
So it's the first look at Addie deal out there in a Hawkeye uniform,
practice uniform, but still getting to see Addie deal out there.
Um, she's going to be good.
And you know, it's weird with expectations.
And of course what we saw with Caitlin going back a couple of years and what
the expectations are going to be for.
Hey, high bar, four star,, five star type of prospect with her. And what the role is going to be.
Are they going to hand the keys over with chit chat right coming in?
Is it going to be chit chat and her in the back court together?
How that's going to look?
How do you incorporate Fierbach and the Ascension that we saw from Kylie Fierbach coming back
for her fifth year of eligibility
Defensive stopper, but then we also saw some glimpses of her offensively late in the season Taylor McCabe
We know what incredible shooter that she's gonna be and really probably the biggest burning question right now
as a player that we didn't get to see and that was Hannah Stalky because Hannah Stalky is with team USA right now and
What is she going to be at that power forward position? You know, they tried it at the beginning of the year,
last year, it just didn't work, didn't click for her.
She is now doing that.
One thing that was out there from the press conference,
though, is the coaches got a call
from the Michigan State coach that is a part
of the coaching staff out there with Team USA.
I mentioned to Jan Jensen that Hannah's playing very well.
She's doing it at the four.
That's necessary.
Look, if I was going to hit the level or they can come back and maybe be, you
know, a top 15 type of team, a sweet 16 type of team, and we saw that gap was
still there a year ago between those elite level teams and I, but in order to
get back to that level, yeah, United need a clip like at, Addie Deal has got to be able to hit the ground running.
And Chit Chat Wright needs to be able to be the point guard that's not turning it over for them.
And Stremblo and Mullaney need to see sophomore step forward from them.
Emily Rodriguez has advertised out of the transfer portal.
I mean, there's still a lot of questions with this team, but because of what we saw from Ava Hyde,
what the expectations are for Leila Hayes, both of the centers for this season.
If Hannah Stolke can be not just play power forward, but be an effective power forward, guard multiple positions, rebound at a high level,
but then play inside and out, stretch the floor, put her on the post, beat players down the floor, do the things that Hannah Stolke has always been able to do, but diversify that offensive skill set even more. That's when we're talking about this
team taking the next step. Should be fun. We got some more coming up for you on that
front in the coming weeks.
What more episode for you this week? Then I am on vacation, but don't worry. We have
you covered your team every day on the lockdown network. I will have a couple of shows for
you next week, even as we will be out of the country as I will bring
you crossover additions. Gonna talk with Spencer McLaughlin from Lockdown Ducks.
We'll talk Oregon, Iowa November matchup and just some football topics overall
with Spencer. Also will do the same with Jacob goings from Lockdown Hoosiers as
we look forward to that late September matchup against Indiana. And boy, what a
pivotal game that's going to be that's coming your way next week.
One more regular episode though coming up for you tomorrow, this week on the program.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
We'll talk to you again tomorrow.
Until then, go Hawks.
