Well, today we are going to take a look at the matchup
coming up this week against Indiana.
It is homecoming.
What a matchup.
It's going to be Indiana on the heels of their huge victory against Illinois.
We'll take a peek ahead to that one.
We also will take a look at the grades from pro football focus
for each of the Hawkeyes that saw the field in the win against Rutgers
and see if those numbers marry with what our eyeballs saw with the all-22 film.
But we begin today's episode with a look back.
another peak at what we saw.
And as I mentioned Friday, I was working Friday night.
I was calling a high school football game between Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial.
So though I had the game on, I missed quite a few things.
And though I was able to lock in and sit in a parking lot for over an hour watching the conclusion of things like a weirdo.
Going back and watching it a second time, definitely, I think, gave me a full view of what we saw here.
And I think there's a lot of positives to take out of this, a lot of good things to go along with the concerns that seem.
are always there. Let's start and run through a couple of things that we didn't talk about on the
Rapid Reaction podcast on Friday night, some of the things that we saw. What to start first,
obviously, with the quarterback position of Mark Bernowski. And with Grinowski and what we saw
out of him on Friday night was a guy that just felt so much more comfortable. You can see that
comfort level starting to grow. And coming off the surgery, missing spring practice, two amped up
in game one, the struggles against Iowa State. I mean, we can go hand in hand with a bunch of
different things. This was the quarterback, though, we thought we were going to get.
And when he made his decision to come to Iowa out of the portal, this is the guy that I thought
we were going to get from the get go. And that hasn't been the case. But the comfortable feeling
that you're getting with him, understanding what they're trying to do, and it really goes hand
in hand with Tim Lester, right? The offensive coordinator, understanding his strengths, his weaknesses,
what are good things, what are plays that he likes. And that's all kind of that game that you're playing
is you're trying to learn in this new era of college football, look, you don't have two or
three years of understanding what a guy is and what are his strings. You got to have to do it on
the fly coupled with just not having him for that spring practice. That is a huge component to
it. I mentioned this on Friday night. One of the late touchdowns is he ran it in one of his three
rushing touchdowns. And how about that? Three rushing touchdowns for a quarterback for Iowa for the
first time. You got to go back to 1990. Matt Rogers, the last quarterback to do that. But just hearing
one of the players holler. Yeah, Mark, after he gets in there, playing to the crowd a little bit,
having a good time with that. I think that's good to see. It's the leadership qualities that
we talked about. And those leadership qualities, you can't microwave them. You have to prove it
on the field. We've seen here in the past, when we've gone through the poor quarterback
play over the last five years of Iowa, Spencer Petrus didn't have it. And he was a great
leader and people liked them. And the beat writers would tell you all the time just how much respect
they had for him. The problem was
it didn't translate to the field.
Guys know that. Then he had
Cade McNamara and he came in and he had
the bravado. He had everything that you
thought you want out of a quarterback. He was confident
he was cocky. He was sure fired
that he was going to get it done and then he didn't.
And guys know that. And now
you get Mark Gerndowski. And if this
continues to build like we saw
he's got obviously
the leadership qualities are looking for. He seems like
more the kind of person
that a guy like Kirk Farrant wants
leading his football program.
But another big component to that
is backing it up.
And when you're doing those things,
when you're playing with physicality,
when you're making the throws and you're delivering
and you're coming up down 28, 24 with the clutch play,
when you're doing those kind of things,
that's when you get guys to buy in.
And more and more, it looks like this group
is starting to buy in to Mark Grinowski.
That's what you want to see.
A couple of bad misses.
We talked about the Ort Worth Pass that would have given Iowa the lead.
Instead, they kick the field goal to get the lead 24-21.
Just can't have that.
It's going to miss.
A couple other ones overall, though, really, really good performance out of Grinowski.
Had a couple of drops again.
And as we'll talk about when we look forward to Indiana, not going to be able to afford that against the Hoosiers.
A couple of other guys who want to spotlight, a Jazzian Patterson came in.
He was doing Jazz Patterson things, right?
We know what you're going to get out of him.
He's going to run hard.
He's going to get you some tough.
yards. And in a game that looked like it was trending more and more like he was going to
get the opportunity to run the football a ton, just feel bad for him. Now, this is a guy
that easily could have gone back home, gone back to Florida, found a school, probably
better starter. And with the depth of this running back room, he stuck it out. He continues to
work, continues to put in the time, everything that you want to see. And when the opportunity
finally looked like it was going to present itself, he gets banged up. And ultimately, Iowa had to
play more. I think Kamari Moulton than they wanted to, probably going into this game.
We'll talk about the snap counts also coming up a little bit later on when we get to those
numbers from pro football focus. But Kamari Moulton played 37 snaps. And it was said last week
that they were hopeful if there wasn't the entry to Xavier Williams. Maybe they could get
another week before Moulton had to be out there. He played a whole lot more. But just wanted to
mention that on that front. Sam Phillips at the wider receiver spot needs to continue to be out
there. Had a catch in the game. Had another opportunity.
that drop early on the third play from scrimmage, obviously can't afford those, but still see
him running around. Looks like he's open often, continued to get him out there and get him involved.
Another thing that I really like going back and looking is something we talked about with
ball placement with Grinowski, and he saw more ability now in this game, hitting guys where
they can run. They had a couple of beautiful screenplays that worked incredibly well to the tight ends,
really liked what we saw on that front. Definitely are going to need that. But also hitting
guys while they're moving, not just stop routes, not just sitting there and waiting for the ball
and then going down as you get hit. No, there was a lot more movement to it. And finally, Dayton Howard,
a boy, that big play again, watching it again for a second time, just an incredible play,
the athleticism, the speed. Remember a couple plays before that, Iowa got the defensive holding
penalty against Rutgers, and that was on Dayton Howard. I think he was actually running maybe the same
route on that play that he got held on. That defensive back got pulled out of the game. I'm not sure if he
went back in because it was a couple of plays later, but regardless, made the big play
and proved to be really one of the big differences in the football game.
A rewatch of the defense, and that is something that still leaves some concerns.
After, you know, going through watching most of the second half in real time, all right,
they're blitzing more, they're adjusting, they're doing some good things.
Still, even as they made those adjustments, and the defense line started to play better,
Hurricane Llewellyn were excellent.
but you also saw there are some mispasses.
There weren't a ton of them, but there were enough that this defense still has work to do.
And though Iowa nationally, the numbers are incredible out of this defense at this point in time.
We know the competition is now ready to ramp up.
You know, in this exercise against Rutgers, I think is a really good one to get them ready.
To have this kind of opener for Big Ten play, I think is going to prepare them well.
We talked about the wide receivers forward Ruckers, and they are incredible.
Ian Strong was as advertised.
The big 6-6 kid on the other side,
the slot guy out of North Texas.
I mean, they had just a bunch of dudes,
and you can see.
That's a team that's going to score a lot of points,
I think, this year.
The defense, on the other hand,
they're going to have their own set of issues.
Finally, special teams on the rewatch,
obviously the kick return to begin the ball game by Weechin.
I still am baffled for the people
that had a problem with Caden Weechin
not stepping out of bounds in the final second.
I don't think anybody realizes, you know, guess what?
When you're actually playing in the game,
they don't have the score bug below you
where he can just look down and see how much time's left.
You're looking for blocking.
You're looking to see if you can get back.
You're trying to find a way to get into the end zone.
Yes, it would have been great if he would have stepped out of bounds
with one second left and gave Drew Stevens an opportunity to kick a field goal.
But I don't think people understand how difficult that is.
And the yankst that I saw on the garbage app,
I just shake in my head about that.
Well, come on.
To think that, oh, yes, while you're returning puns, you're weaving in and out, you're finding
room, you're finding avenues, you're trying to get to the end zone.
Oh, by the way, make sure you got enough time, too.
Come on.
Let's live in reality.
Got to knock that stuff off.
Defense of the second half talked about really good.
Other special teams, Drew Stevens, with the miss.
It was a bad miss too.
And that one really jumped off again, watching that a second time, is we've seen Drew Stevens
miss kicks, but rarely that poorly.
Still bounce back hit another one.
a little bit later in the game, but can't lead points on the board.
And Iowa cannot be in a spot, cannot afford to lead points on the board,
and we'll get to Indiana coming up this week.
So those are a couple of the high-level things that didn't talk about a ton on Friday
with the recap that jumped out in our second look at the Iowa win against Rutgers.
Iowa goes to 1-0 in the Big 10, 3-1 overall on the season.
Let's continue here, lockdown Hawkeyes, and let's take a look at the numbers.
Pro football focus, they take a look every week at the All-22 film.
This is the film that gives you an idea of what every player is doing on every play.
And they grade every one of those plays.
And then it spits out the number for each other ranks.
We go through this exercise seeing if what we saw watching the broadcast or being there in person matches up with what the numbers say from pro football focus.
We'll take a look at that.
Plus, a look ahead of the matchup this week against Indiana.
We'll do that as we continue, Locked on Hawkeyes.
Quick question for all you college football fans.
out there. If you could go back in time, sit in the front row at your school's biggest
rivalry game, what hat would you be wearing? Yeah, I said hat. For me, it would be the game.
The game, hat that I'm wearing right now. These aren't just hats. They're the same vintage
styles that fans wore back in the 80s and 90s, myself included. The hat I'm wearing right
now, it's not the same hat. It's the same style of hat that I had back when I was sitting in
the student section back in the late 90s. Guess what? They still go for the same price they did

Time to take a look at the numbers, what we saw
and see if they match up with what pro football
focus grading has coming
out. I've got a grade that's going to come up
a little bit later on. How about this, though?
At the quarterback spot, your top-ranked player for the game against Rutgers was Mark
Rannowski.
How about this?
An 88.1 grade overall, his past game, a grade was actually higher even than his run where he had
three rushing touchdowns in the game.
Excuse me, a 78.2 passing grade, 76.3, 88.1 overall.
Excellent. Excellent performance on Mark Grinowski.
And definitely saw a lot of good things on that one.
talked about the drops two misses maybe in the game maybe three you could argue still you're playing
efficient you're able to do that with the legs one thing about the legs kirk mentioned after the game
you know he ran it 13 times maybe a little bit too much no no no no no no no no no no kirk
don't fall into that line of thinking iowa needs mark kornowski running the football that is his
strength and that's his offense strength you need the big guy running the ball jumping over to
the running back spot, the top rank player in the grade from pro football focus was Terrell Washington
Jr. He had a 70.2 grade. I had the nice play up the side. He grades out well there. Camarie Moulton
was second with the 68, Jazzy Matterson with the 66 and then Nathan McNeil with a 53.4 in his
limited reps. At the running back spot, Camarie Moulton, 37 snaps in the game. Jazian Patterson,
he had 11, 6 for T.J. Washington and Nathan McNeil had five, though he did have a run late in
that game in the second half got 25 yards on a 10-yard run and then the face mask
that pushed that one forward still in the second half of a tight game think said a lot there also
molten three for three pass catching good to see that out of him and kind of adding to that
versatility that he has your top ranked wide receiver was Dayton how it was one catch but boy
was it a big one graded out high in that component also Caden Weeching up there with the 68.2
good to see they're getting him involved in different ways and doing more than just jet sweeps
using that speed getting him in space like to see that a 64 grade for Jacob Gill his run blocking
grade though was excellent and no surprise with Jacob Gill a very willing pass a run blocker
in the running game for Iowa at the wide receiver spot set the Anderson who left the game
with an ankle injury is 63 KJ Parker was out there a little bit the lowest rank was Sam Phillips
that drop obviously a big part of that your snaps at the wide receiver position for the
against Rutgers, goes like this.
So Jacob Gill had 37, Sam Phillips with 35,
Dayton Howard up to 25 snaps.
Keep those snaps coming for number seven.
KJ Parker played 21, a quiet 21 snaps, I thought.
I saw him out there a couple of times,
but I definitely just didn't pop out there.
Cain Weegean with 15, Seth Anderson with 11.
We talked about the injury with Anderson.
Over two tight end, and it's becoming the Hayden Large show,
but Zach Ortworth and DJ Vonamy,
definitely both of those guys
maybe ascending a little bit.
Now, both of the guys have also talked about their
not unwillingness.
They're just not great blockers at this point in time.
However, going through and looking at both of those guys,
definitely Hayden Large is the best out of that group
at the tight end position.
He grades out with an 82.3 run black and gray.
That is excellent.
But the other guys, Bonamy and Ortworth,
those guys can make plays in the passing game.
So it's going to be kind of that marrying
and trying to figure out exactly
what they're going to look like and how they're going to continue to build this.
I think, again, they're going to be relying a whole bunch on what we see at the wide receiver's spot.
Finally, the offensive line.
And we just saw a little bit of Jack Dotsler.
This was pretty much all Trevor Loutt at the left tackle position.
Eight snaps in the game for Jack Dotsler.
The rest of all 51 of them went to Lout and then the other four offensive line.
And all of them played every snap offensively in the game with 59 steps.
Logan Jones, Jennings, Dunker, both Stevens and Cade Peeper.
So the grades for this game at the offensive line spot.
Cade Peeper, number one, how about this, a 90.6 run blocking grade,
and 80 pass blocking grade, 84.1 overall.
Trevor Lough, and this was the one I was really interested,
because I really like what I saw out of Lauk.
I keyed on him quite a few times on that second rewatch,
just seeing the youngest guy, the guy that we still had the most question marks
about really what he looked like.
This was his best game in a Hawkeye uniform.
Lout continues to build upon himself, and he's getting better and better,
the redshirt sophomore, an 82.8 overall grade, pass blocking of 89.
Very good in the run game as well with a 77 grade.
Up next was both Stevens and Jennings Dunker,
79.9 and 79.6, respectively.
Jones was good.
Even Doser when he came in, his grades were really good there.
This offensive lines coming together.
Absolutely positively, really playing at a high level.
loved what we've seen a whole lot of those,
those inside zode plays to the left side
where they're pulling and they're bringing
Cade Piper with his athleticism around that side.
He was opening up a lot of room there.
And in fact, there's a couple of times,
I think the running back missed.
And if he had a guy like maybe Caleb Johnson a year ago,
those things would have busted off for even more.
But love what we're seeing out of this offensive line group,
really, really taken a big step forward.
Let's jump over to the defense now
and take a peek at that side.
of the football and what we have in the grades from pro football focus start with the
defensive line as they got after it in this one in a big time way certainly in the second
half because that pass rush in the first half is nowhere to be found max lewellyn your top
rank guy he grades out with a 73.4 a good pass rush grade out of him as well with the 73
there brian allen up next with a 70 grade 69 for erin graves herk at 66.9 hawthorne a 64.2
weather, a 62.4. Pitman played a few snaps. He had a 61.
Jonah Pace was the lowest rated guy. I was surprised by that. He had a 51. I thought
Jonah Pace played really well in the game. So how does it look as we jump at the snap count?
How are they breaking this down and figuring out what they're doing with the depth that they
have built at defensive line? There was a lot of Hercut and Lou Ellen. No surprise there.
Both of those guys play 55 snaps in the game. Up next, Aaron Graves, those are the three that
you anticipate with 52.
Next, join a place for Pace played 42, 35 snaps for Hawthorne getting out there a whole lot more, Bryce Hawthorne, the South Dakota State transfer.
Brian Allen with 25, I'm a Brian Allen fan.
I think as you every dayers know, want to see him out there even more and certainly in those rush situations.
Same with Kenneth Meriwether, he had 17 snaps in the game, nine for Pittman, and Will Hubert also with four snaps in the game.
Jumping over to linebacker, and it was a great for Jane Harrell.
pretty good, 72.4, that's well above average, considered in the good category, 16 above
his average, 70 and above is that good category and really graded out well kind of a cross,
including his coverage grade, a 69 in that one. Up next, Jackson, Rex Roth, he had a 70.7,
of course, had the interception and the first turnover force to the year for the Hawkeyes.
Van Kickrix, he played a little bit, he was a 60.5, and there's Carson Shire. He was the lowest-rated guy
with the 57, really good against the run, really good tackling grade.
The problem, we saw a ton in the first half.
That coverage grade, a 37 for Carson Shire, need to get much better in that avenue.
Mentioned the snap count, 72 snaps for Shire as he went the distance.
Harrow played 65, Rex Ross was 16, and then Van Kekxerich played three snaps in the game.
Rapid things up here, and the numbers from pro football focus over at defensive back.
Your top-rank guy was Zach Lutmer.
Lucky there's two halves to the game.
Speaking of coverage grades,
really improved as a game went on because he finished with a 70-grade,
top out of the defensive backs.
A tackle grade was excellent with an 81.1.
T.J. Hall, he's up next.
Good grade out of him, along with Cohen-enchinger,
68 and 67, respectively for both of those guys.
Mention Jalen Watson.
We talked about him coming in late in that football game.
Talking to Chad Lysikow today from the Des Moines Register,
the columnist for the Hawkeyes.
He mentioned when the Ruckers do that they were going to throw the ball in those final possessions,
probably why you saw Watson out there, maybe as a past defender a little bit better.
Sean Lee, though, more of that complete package can play all different styles.
And that's why he was in there a little bit more late in the game for Watson.
Wampa with a 58 and a 53 for Lee, not very good numbers out of either of those guys in the competition is going to ramp up this week.
And Tringer, he went the distance, played 72 snaps, almost the same for Hall.
69 snaps for both of them.
Lutner was 63, Lee was 60, and then the aforementioned Jalen Watson,
he played nine snaps late in the game.
So there it is, the grades from Pro Football Focus.
See if that matches up with what your eyes saw on Saturday,
Friday as Iowa got the win against Rutgers.
As we continue, it's not over, though we're a third of the way through the season.
We do have a big game coming up on Saturday.
Iowa, with another opportunity against a team playing as well.
as maybe anybody in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers come to town.
We'll talk about what we expect to see when we come back.

Trent, kind of back with you one final time here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for being with this and making Lockdown Hawkeyes.
your first listen every day.
So it's Indiana.
The Hoosiers.
Yeah, they're playing well.
This is not your dad's Indiana Hoosier program,
college football playoff team a year ago,
and they are back and maybe even playing better than that team a year ago.
So they opened up the season with a win against Old Dominion, 2714.
We're going to talk about that game more as a week goes on.
Then two dominating performances against Kennesaw State and Indiana State.
Yes, exactly.
But then what they did Saturday night,
against Illinois.
An Illinois team that was ranked ninth in the country, which was a joke.
And I said as much to you.
I told you I liked Indiana going to that spot.
But that, no way.
Bradiano Mendoza, their fine quarterback,
was maybe even as close to perfect as you're going to find.
A 21 of 23, 267 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions in the game.
But it wasn't just throwing the ball.
They ran it at a high level.
In fact, how about this?
They ran for 312 yards a game against Illinois.
Martin, average 9 yards of carry, over 100 yards.
Kailon Black, 10 carries, 89 yards.
Roman Hemby, 14 carries, 65 yards.
Just on and on and on, this team did it in a big time way.
We talked about the wide receivers for Rutgers.
Indiana's got a tremendous one and Elijah Surat.
Surat is a guy that has come in the last couple of years
and he has been outstanding for the Hoosiers coming in.
He was one of those James Madison guys
that came along with Kirk Sennetti.
He had 1,100 yards when he was there.
Last season, he had nearly 1,000 yards receiving.
Over 18 a catch.
This year he's got five touchdowns already this season.
This team's loaded.
They're playing well.
However, this will be the first time they go on the road.
And as we know, that first trip on the road
can be a little bit tricky.
The point spread something we will also talk about as the week goes on.
As I'm sure you every dayers know, I'm a degenerate gambler.
I love gambling and I gamble every single day.
So one thing that bears mentioning, and keep it an eye on,
is this is something where everybody is on Indiana this week.
And how many times do you see everybody on one side and then you go back the other and what it looks like?
And there's a potential this could be that game this week.
So looking at the board right now, currently Fandual, an eight and a half point favor for the Hoosiers.
A lot of eights out there, a couple of seven and a halfs in the market, more than a touchdown for Indiana.
Not only that, 81% of the money, 73% of the tickets are on the Hoosiers.
They are going to be, excuse me, the public side all week long.
And if somebody likes to fade that angle, it's a reason to like the Hawkeye.
this week.
The guy who doesn't have to play perfect,
but they have to play clean.
Win the turnover battle.
Have something go their way.
Dominates special teams.
Many of the kind of baseline tenets
that we talk about for Iowa football
every single week,
they definitely show up in a big time way
here in this one this week.
We'll continue to break the game down throughout the week.
Jacob Goins is going to join us from Lockdown Hoosiers.
We'll get his perspective.
I know he's flying high.
I mean, his expectations are repeat
run to the college football playoff.
This is going to be no problem.
Little old Iowa.
We'll see.
I feel better than I thought.
Even with what the train looked like from Indiana,
boy, do they look good Saturday night.
We'll see if Ferrence has got a special.
It hasn't been pretty against ranked teams.
It's been ugly.
Oh, and 10, the last 10 matchups,
and a lot of blowouts in there.
Another opportunity comes on Saturday afternoon.
Another big moment happening right now for locked on college football fans.
Locked-on and Fire TV present college football kickoff.
It's your ultimate college football weekly preview.
Drake Toll from Lockdown Big 12 leads a conversation along with two-time AP coach of the year,
Gary Patterson, former college star Jesse Holly, and Lockdown's local experts.
A college football preview only lockdown can do.
Catch college football kickoff every Thursday throughout the season only on Fire TV.
Thanks for being with us today.
We will be back with you tomorrow.
Continue breaking things down Tuesdays with Todd.
Todd, come your way. Todd Bromelcamp's going to join us.
Also have a special interview with a Hawkeye student athlete, Will Ryan.
That's coming up for you this week.
And as mentioned, Jacob Goans will also join us with a crossover edition with Lockdown Hoosiers.
All to come this week, your team every day.
I got you covered on the Hawkeye Front.
We'll talk to you again tomorrow.
Until then, go Hawks.
