One of the worst teams in all of college football comes to Kittick Stadium on Saturday night.
What can Iowa do to take advantage and will we finally see the Iowa passing game explode?
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome in, I'm Trent Condon, and this.
is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
I've been covering the Hawkeyes for 20 years on the radio in the state of Iowa.
You can hear me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network with stations fanned out across
the state, including our flagship 106.3 KX&O each weekday from noon to two.
This episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Mazda.
Like our players, we sweat every detail because when you make every move count,
pulling off the unexpected is only the beginning.
Stay tuned later on for highlights in this week's moving the game forward.
Mazda move and be moved.
Iowa basketball non-conference schedule has been released.
We will get into that a little bit later on and what Ben McCollum squad is going to be seeing
coming up this season during non-conaction.
Plus we'll be joined by Hawkeye reports Tom Kakert as we preview the game against UMass
and get his thoughts on both the basketball schedule and football this week.
where we start today with a look at this UMass team and a look at what Iowa is going to do,
what we hope to see tomorrow night in Kinnick Stadium under the light, 630 kickoff
for the matchup against the Minutemen.
It's been a frustrating week.
And over the past six days now, the frustrations have definitely been out there from
Kirk Ferrence and the future of this program, the passing game for yet another year
unable to get unearth.
You know, we posed a question yesterday about Tim Lester, you know, and how much of the
blame needs to go at the feet of the offensive coordinator.
And to nobody's surprise, there were a lot of pushback about, you can't put it on the feet
of Tim Lester.
He is just running the offense as dictated by Kirk Farrant's.
And as we've gone through the four offensive coordinators for Iowa football and Ken O'Keefe,
by far the best that we've seen at this point.
But when he moved on and moved on with Miami Dolphins, we saw the ineptitude of Greg
Davis and trying to put together a passing game, the horse.
on a way with the zone blocking scheme and it didn't work,
certainly at a high level.
We, of course, went through Brian Farrantz.
And for all the highs there were in the great moments,
there were so many devastating lows and then what it turned into in his final few seasons.
And now here we are in year number two of Tim Lester,
bringing in the Shanahan offense.
What we thought was going to be something different.
With the Shanahan offense, one thing that we've heard, regardless,
at the professional level or here with the Iowa Hawkeyes,
is just what a difficult offense it is to understand.
And with the program like Iowa, in the college game and the overturn and the turnover that we see on the rosters year after year, the question is, does this make sense to actually be trying this and being one of the few teams at the FBS level?
And I believe the only team at the Power 4 level that is running a very close version to the Shanahan offense.
Does it make sense to do that?
Because what we've seen two games in once again is this passing game is dead on reliable.
And if there's any hope of getting it turned around, well, I think.
has to start this week at UMass.
When you look at the Minutemen coming to town, it paints an ugly picture.
They are 0 and 2 on the season.
They got blown out by Temple, Temple, and then lost at home last week in front of 3,700 fans
bellied their way through the turnstiles as they fell to Bryant, 2726.
The two, I think, most major components that jump out here.
when you're looking at this UMass team is they've given up a ton through the year.
The first two games of the season against Temple and Bryant.
That's right.
Those two teams, they have given up 594 yards through the year, just shy of 300 yards per game.
This is it.
This is the time to get the passing game going and not just worried about winning the game.
Not under that, not worry about the spread.
We're not talking about any of those things.
you have to show an ability to throw the football because then you got a short week with Ruckers
and not only is a short week with the game being played next Friday,
but you couple of it, couple it, excuse me, with what you have playing a night game.
So the turnaround time is going to be incredibly difficult.
It's a Ruckers team that is going to be ready to go in that one.
You have to show up for that.
We've talked about it to beat the Indiana's, the Oregon's, the U.S.Cs of the world.
You're going to have to score points.
He can't just grind out victories against those kind of teams.
Their offenses, I believe, are too dynamic.
And that's not to mention Penn State.
And the rivalry games against Wisconsin and Minnesota and Nebraska,
you have to be able to throw the football with this schedule.
It has to start here.
And that's not just throwing the ball and hitting six-yard hitch routes and five-yard outs.
No, no, no.
We're talking about making plays down the field.
Deep crossers, posts, just straight streaks, up the field,
make some plays because if you can't do it here look it's over i mean this team is dead on arrival
if you can't throw against a minute men team that has given up nearly 600 yards nine touchdowns
through the air in two games this season if you can't do that shut it down now they're not
going to shut it down and that's not going to be the case umas hasn't given up a rushing touchdown
i guess that's something look not only that this umas team is banged up potentially seven
starters are going to be out of this game.
There is so much here that this is going to be one of the worst teams.
Now, I get it.
And he might be saying, Trent, you said the exact same thing before the game against Albany.
I did.
I wasn't able to take advantage.
The time is now.
Get it done.
Other things want to see.
Down the field, in the passing game, taking shots, spread it out.
Let's hit a couple two, not just throw it, but actually make some plays down the field.
That would be great to see.
But also on the defensive side of the football.
getting to the quarterback, generating turnovers, getting the Phil Parker defense back
to the level that we're used to.
This, again, is the game to make it happen.
Unleash hell.
Make it happen.
Get after that quarterback, bottled them up.
Let's get a route here.
Let's get some good vibes going once again because the negativity, it has been immense.
It has been all over the place.
And I see the comments and I hear you and I see you and I talk to people.
I know it's tough.
It's been a difficult week.
Some good vibes.
Getting those good feelings back in Kiddick Stadium under the lights on a Saturday night.
Let's get that happening again.
We need it.
As a fan base, we need it to get some positivity before Big Ten play begins.
Also, a couple of other players that I want to see.
Let's get that blow out happening.
And let's get to see those young freshman linebackers, the red shirt freshman.
I want to see Reese and Buffington and Weisskopf.
I want to see those guys out there on the field in real action.
Let's get them out on the field.
Speaking of that, let's see a little bit more Dayton Howard at the wide receiver position.
And another one at the tight end position, let's see Thomas Meyer, the true freshman out of
clear late.
There's a lot of buzz about a guy like that.
Let's get guys like that out there on the field.
Get that cushy lead.
Fourth quarter, you want to run it, so be it.
But also, let's get that big lead.
And let's see a little bit of more Hank Brown.
Get him some more game reps.
He was able to do it late against Albany.
Let's give him a little bit more.
All of this is out there.
All this is potentially able to happen.
You got to go do it.
The time is now.
Let's get out there, throttle the minute men, get the victory, dominate, and then we get ready for big 10 play.
That's what I want to see on Saturday.
We got more for you here, locked on Hawkeyes, as we get ready for game number three of the season.
We're going to talk to Tom Kaker at hawkeye report.com.
He'll be in the press box for the matchup.
We'll get his perspective on that.
Plus a look at the Iowa non-conference basketball schedule.
We'll do that as we continue, Locked on Hawkeyes.
This episode is brought to you by Mazda's moving the game forward.
For those who believe it's not just about playing the game, it's about redefining it.
There are moments that do more than just put points on the board.
They move crowds, move culture, and keep moving the game forward.
This week's moment that move the game forward is when we got to see the slow mesh.
Our guy, how about Warner Gero?
He comes in as an analyst after the long-time
offensive coordinator at Wake Forest.
And I get it.
We only saw it for two plays.
But you talk about moving the game forward?
That's absolutely it is.
And in Iowa football, we know it's not always moving the game forward.
It feels like it's sometimes stuck back a little bit further back.
Not the case with Ward Ruggiero and the slow mesh.
Let's get that going a little bit more.
And that is something that definitely move the game forward.
When you follow what moves you,
the unexpected is only the beginning.
And just like there's more to every highlight,
there's more to a Mazda vehicle.
Mazda, move and be moved.
Let's get to Tom Kekert.
Hawkeye Report.com.
He joins the program.
All right, Tom, let's perfect world this one.
What would be the best case scenario for the Hawks?
Convincing win, quarterback looks good,
backup quarterback, get some time.
What would appease the fan base?
Need to take some shots down the field.
I think that would certainly be something.
See that speed out there.
Take us back to Tuesday.
And Kirk was asked about the wide receivers,
going short of the sticks and that kind of thing.
He seemed frustrated.
It felt like with his wide receiver group,
did you take it the same way?
Yeah, I thought there was some frustration.
I thought there was some frustration with special teams.
Yes.
I think there was some of that too.
So I think there's just some general frustration from Kirk,
just that things aren't going as,
smoothly as I think he'd probably
hoped that they would at this point in the year
but
you know they just
find a way to do some things
differently
and get them
get them better on offense
because it's a slog right now
it just is and if it
if they come out tomorrow
and the UMass game
looks a lot like the Albany game
oh it's just going to be brute
it's going to be brute just work I mean
it's just
they've got to do something in the first half,
and they've got to, you know,
go to halftime at like 28 nothing or something.
People will be like, okay, that's good.
That's positive.
But if it's like, oh, we're sitting at, you know, 17-7,
everybody's going to be like, oh, here we go again, you know.
Yeah, I get Phillips involved, maybe get him a long pass or maybe set then.
So, Tom, and I appreciate you doing this because I know nothing about you,
I can't bring myself to look at this team because it's just seemingly,
when you get beat by Bryant, I mean, help me.
What did UMass do do, do well or average, I guess?
What do they do that might give Iowa difficulty tomorrow?
They haven't given up any rushing touchdowns this year.
There you go.
How about that?
But they've given up nine touchdown passes in two games to Bryant and Temple.
so you better be able to
there's
there yeah you have to be
and they're given up
two I think it was
the 297 or 279
I can't remember if I'm transposed
anyway close to 300 yards
a game in the air
to Temple and Bryant
so if Iowa can't
throw the ball against this
and they're beat up
their backup quarterback's going to be in there
a guy transfer from Yale
their best wide receiver
T.Y. Harding
is out.
So they've really got just one receiver.
I think two of their two starting corners are out, too.
I think they've got like seven or eight starters that are out.
So if Iowa can't pound this team, I mean, you look at the Saggerine rankings.
And in the Saggering rankings, I think UMass is like two spots ahead of Drake.
Not in scholars.
I take Drake.
Yeah, yeah, give you Woodley's group.
Go get it done.
Absolutely.
So a question for you,
mention the wide receivers,
the tight end position.
Stranga's going to be out
for the season with the Achilles injury.
Zach Ortworth admitted that he's not a very good blocker on Tuesday.
Okay, that's eye opening.
Thomas Meyer heard a lot about him in the recruiting.
I mean, I would say,
it's not very often that Texas A&M and Miami are making their way up to Clear Lake, right?
But they were there looking at him.
He was on the travel squad.
It's a guy that is going to be part of the plans eventually.
I mean, is it time to take the bubble wrap off and say,
let's see what we got here.
Avoname, the kid from Carol Kemper,
that's another one that's been getting a little bit of buzz.
Take us into the tight end position.
Yeah, I would say,
Myers, the one I'm intrigued with.
Also Michael Burt.
We kind of just passed over Michael Burt,
but he was the guy,
redshirt freshman.
He was also traveling this week,
but I think they've probably got it.
They were clearly thinking about playing Meyer already
because he was on the travel roster.
And he's been kind of in that, you can kind of tell at the first home game, like, which guys are like, hey, we're just going to redshirt this guy probably and guys that they're kind of thinking about because Meyer was always around the huddle out during timeouts where like Mason Woods and Eli Johnson, the other two freshman tight ends were on the sidelines, not near the huddle.
So they're clearly kind of getting that guy ready to go.
And I think you just got to take the wrap off of him, as you said,
and just let him play and see what he can do because I think they really like him.
You know, it's going to help the offense, too.
When they eventually get Fandersey, I mean,
Grinowski admitted that Vandersi was like one of his favorite guys to throw to.
And, you know, now he doesn't have him.
And Marmorton, the top running back has been out.
So, I mean, there's, there is some extenuating circumstances,
but they still should.
If this thing's not, if they don't cover the 35, something's wrong, I think.
Over under one and a half puns for Dakin.
He might get two.
You think so?
I take the under.
I don't even know if you will.
Yeah, they might be that bad, though.
This might be one of the worst teams that's ever come into kindergarten.
Oh, my God.
That's pathetic.
So let me ask about Moulton and Vanzi.
What's the prognal?
Any chance they play Friday at Rutgers?
I don't know.
They've,
Andersy,
we saw him last week and he was still in a boot.
So that's one of the things we're going to check on Saturdays,
is he's still in a boot.
And if he's out of the boot,
then maybe you've got a chance to get him ready.
I think one of the interesting things, too, this week is,
you know,
do they just with,
it's a short turnaround.
I mean,
you're playing a Saturday night game.
And then you've got to travel and you got a Friday night game.
So you've got the win.
It's not like you're playing a,
11 a.m.
You can get off your feet and be done by 2.30 and rest up on Saturday.
It's late until the night.
So I'm going to be curious if they start shoveling in some guys fairly quickly.
Kirk goes to the second unit fairly quickly on Saturday if they can get a pretty significant lead
and just kind of cruise in to the finish line.
Iowa, this is not very Iowa defense-like.
They are sitting with just two sacks on the season.
four consecutive games without an interception first time since 2014.
That has been the case.
Does it count this weekend if they get one?
It should because it's been a long time.
But what's happened with the deep?
I mean, they look buttoned up.
They look solid and holding Iowa State to those early field goals.
There were a lot of good things.
But those are really major parts of the Phil Parker defense, getting the quarterback and getting some picks.
What's going on there?
And yes, hopefully you get it done this weekend.
But any concern with you when you hear those two numbers?
Yeah, it is concerning that they have not gotten, but it was last year or the year before.
They were just, they were sitting like three games in and had like one or two sacks or something, and they end up with 30.
So it's like they always seem to find a way to get there, but they have not gotten there.
And I think this thing that's concerning, too, is that they just have not created turnovers yet.
And they've got to, in order for Iowa to be successful,
they've got to be able to create some turnover and get some opportunities.
And they haven't done a whole lot on special teams.
In fact, you know, Kirk was pretty exasperated about the special teams play against Iowa State.
And, you know, it cost them.
It really did.
I mean, the unsportsmanlike conduct thing on Ouija, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the point that went by, you know, and then he skated back and got it and lost more yardage.
I mean, stuff like that, that, that really makes it.
hard. They have to be good in those
off three phases in order to win football
games against seems like Iowa State.
And didn't do it on Saturday.
Tom will let you go on this. Iowa basketball
has released their non-conference schedule.
I know when I talked to McCollum a couple
weeks back, he said they were still struggling
to find that final game. Maybe some
frustration. Who was it? Do you know that they can't
tell? I don't remember. It was one of the ones
towards the end. I think it was one of the December games.
But kind of difficult at that point, they put it
together. Give us a takeaway or two
on the men's hoop schedule.
Yeah, I know. They were struggling to find that one more game and finally got it.
So that's good that they've got that done.
I like it.
You know, they've got the MTE thing and they're going to play Old Miss.
And maybe they'll play, you know, Utah, you know, Grand Canyon is still, I think, a pretty solid program.
And Xavier's a good solid program and Richard Petino there.
So you know he's going to put a good team out there on the floor.
and Iowa State on the road.
I mean, there's some meat to it, at least.
Some names that we recognize, at least.
It's not directional school, state schools.
South Carolina upstate, not on the schedule this year.
Good stuff.
Tom Caker, Hawkeye.
Here's a fun note for you guys.
Iowa hasn't, Iowa quarterback hasn't thrown for over 200 yards
on a game since Illinois State last year.
Good God.
We've watched them all.
maybe will have to happen this week we can get that this weekend what a high bar when do you leave
for ruckers tom thursday uh Thursday Thursday yeah so I'll be out there Friday so awesome we'll be good
good stuff talk to then thank you Tom Kaker okay okay yeah thanks sir Tom Kaker hotkeye report
dot com thanks as always to Tom for his time as we take a look at the matchup against UMass and
what a depressing statistic so we got to go back now over a calendar year from the last time that an
Iowa quarterback through for 200 yards.
Wow.
That's what we're shooting for coming up against UMass.
We continue locked on Hawkeyes.
Let's talk some basketball.
The non-conference schedule is out.
We touched on that a little bit with Tom.
Let's dive a little bit deeper.
A look at the non-conference schedule for Iowa.
A couple of potential big games in there.
What the Hawkeye schedule is going to look like.
We'll talk about it as we continue locked on Hawkeyes.

powered by DoorDash.
Just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks,

These players delivered when it mattered most.
Let's break it down.
For the Hawkeyes this week, it's Jazion Patterson,
who delivered in a big time way.
He came in.
He ran hard.
He helped move the offense after some struggles at the running back.
And when the pressure was on, Jazz, he came through.
No hesitation, no delay.
He'd been watching us week after week.
This performance wasn't a fluke.
Jazz John Patterson is on a streak.
And just like Jazz delivered for the Hawkeyes, DoorDash delivers your Saturdays.
With DoorDash streaks, you save every Saturday you order.
Stack it up all season, and you could save up to $250, including $100.
in DoorDash credits. Order this Saturday, keep the streak alive, fuel your game day only
with DoorDash. Terms apply, period, promo period through November 18.
Trent, kind of back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being
with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. So time to talk little
basketball to wrap things up. We mentioned the non-conference schedule to Tom
Kaker. We'll flip it there on the board if you're watching along with this on
YouTube. Make sure you hit subscribe if you are. I really do appreciate. And big thank you to
every dayers with us each and every day. So Iowa will open up the schedule this year against
Robert Morris. Then after that, it'll be in fact five straight home games to open up the
slate this season. Robert Morris, who was decent last year, pushed Alabama in the NCAA
tournament. You couple that with Fulgaris coming in. We're the best players for them a year ago.
and it's going to be part of this Hawkeye team of this year.
Then Western Illinois, Xavier, Southeast Missouri State, and Chicago State.
So those are the first five games of the season.
The headliner, obviously, is that matchup against an always good Xavier squad.
Then it is on the road, starting neutral site as they'll go out to Palm Springs for their exempt event this year.
Ole Miss will be the opponent in game number one.
And then they'll either get Grand Canyon, who I saw a couple years back in the NCAA tournament,
or Utah, who they saw up in South Dakota, a recently.
After that big break, they will be off after that matchup in the second game in Palm Springs all the way until December 11th when they face off against Iowa State at least for non-conference.
Now, they have their conference games that will be sprinkled in there.
Western Michigan, after that at home, the game in Des Moines against Bucknell, and then the matchup against UMass.
That will wrap up the non-conference slate UMass Lull, not to be confused with the Minutemen will see a lot of UMass happened here this week.
So that is a look at the schedule.
Let's take it a step further, though, and see exactly how good these teams are.
So this is a tweet that I sent out earlier today with the preseason rankings.
These are from Bart Torvik.
And if you're an everyday listener, you know one of the analytic sites that I use for college basketball is Bart Torvick.
A lot of good information there.
If you're stat nerd like I am myself.
Robert Morris, this is his projected ranking for this season.
Pretty good.
181.
Western Illinois, not so much.
354.
Xavier at number 70.
that Southeast Missouri State game, more difficult than maybe you think initially,
166 in his preseason rankings.
Chicago State, terrible, 325.
Old Miss, a projected NCAA tournament bubble team at 43.
Same thing with Utah and Grand Canyon.
Either one of those pretty good in the top 100 at 62 and 78th, respectively, for Utah
and Grand Canyon.
Iowa State preseason number 15, and then three more by games.
Western Michigan, not very good.
number 308.
Bucknell,
not very good,
281,
and UMass Lowell,
not very good,
322.
Overall,
year number one,
I'm not going to complain about it.
Would you like to see
maybe another major conference game in there?
I think you would.
One thing that I know Coach McCullum
mentioned to me
when we had them on the podcast
a couple months back
is that they wanted to make sure
in their exempt tournament
at minimum,
they were going to get one game
against a power conference foe,
and they got that
with the matchup against Old Miss.
they really push for that, wanting to get that.
I think they would have liked to add one more,
but it was difficult.
Late in the game, a lot of contracts that were already signed to make that happen.
I think you'll see the schedule get more difficult as we get deeper into the tenure.
Tenor, 10 year, easy for me to say, of Ben McCollum,
but quick glance there of what it's going to look like,
don't have any huge issues with it.
One thing, if you've heard me for a long time,
and you probably heard me back in the day on radio,
one thing that I used to complain about all the time.
was non-conference scheduling and scheduling poorly.
Not because everybody doesn't play by games because they do.
However, when we went through and looked at it,
one thing that you saw is Fran McCaffrey had a problem with this.
I mean, this dates back to the Dr. Tom era.
When the RPI was the system that was used for selecting the NCAA tournament,
and when you played those just drags of college basketball,
the worst of the worst, those teams in the 300s,
they would drag down your non-conference straight to schedule,
even if you scheduled well outside of the buy games they were that much of an anchor on your
ranking that's not the case anymore it's not the case anymore with the net system that they use now
because though strength of margin of victory excuse me is capped at 10 the efficiency numbers that are in
there so if you go out and beat a team by 40 50 points even an awful team it actually helps you
in those rankings and that's why the pushback is not nearly as bad as it once was you say
oh turn you're just talking out of both sides no this is something that is
moved on. And when we saw what these net rankings are, I moved on from the non-conference
scheduling and playing these by games. Now you just got to go out and throttle. That's the
other part of it. That'll do it for today. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first
