Starting point is 00:00:53 Today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now new customers can get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Well it is that season. Yes recruiting season is here for football. We're going to talk about the four guys that are making their way to campus coming up this weekend for the Iowa football program and what's going to be happening here in the month of June on that scene in Iowa trying to build towards the future and how different it's certainly going to look going
Starting point is 00:01:20 forward in that realm. We'll also be joined by John Bowen Campies on the Hawkeye beat for the Associated Press. We'll talk a little bit with John about what he expects to see this football season and we'll talk some basketball as well, including the decision by Ben McCullum to bring his son Peyton aboard. John Bowencamp will join us coming up here in just a little bit. But we open up today's conversation with a look at the most important position in all of sport. It is the quarterback position. And as we've gone through this spring and going back to today's conversation with the look at the most important position in all of sport. It is a quarterback position.
Starting point is 00:01:46 And as we've gone through this spring and going back to in the winter time before the commitment and then with it, the commitment of Mark Gornowski and how the belief for myself is Mark Gornowski has changed the equation for the Iowa football team in 2025. As the season concluded last year, a hugely disappointing one, ending in a frustrating loss against Missouri. What could have been the what ifs that we played throughout the course of last year?
Starting point is 00:02:14 With all that, you looked at this season, the guys that graduated, the guys that moved on, and you couple it with the schedule that Iowa faces this year, and I thought there was gonna be a big step back that we were going to be talking more coming into 2025 about Iowa football, not searching for being in contention for a big 10 championship going into November, not in contention for a college football playoff birth, but can they get to bowl eligibility?
Starting point is 00:02:43 I really believe that that was going to be the baseline we were going to be looking at in 2025. But Mark Gronowski was one of the many reasons that my opinion has changed on that. That expectation should be more than just getting back to a bowl game and should be more than having another nice eight and four type of season. The schedule's there to make a big jump up and opportunities are going to be there including a bunch of them in Kinnick Stadium and we know how good Kinnick Stadium can be and what an advantage it is. So all that being said with Mark Gernowski this guy that if healthy would have been an NFL draft pick a guy that is coveted at the next level and a guy
Starting point is 00:03:23 that was coveted by a lot of programs with a lot more money than I would. But stayed in the Midwest, local connections, Chicagoland kid, playing close to home, a place he wanted to camp at and wanted an opportunity coming out of high school, never got it. And now here we are and he'll get that opportunity with the Hawkeyes. He's a leader that they need. It's not the false bravado that we saw before. It is real leadership qualities for Mark Grunowski and now he gets his opportunity. But as we know, the backup
Starting point is 00:03:53 quarterback can, well, at times be the most popular guy on campus, not the starter, but the backup. So who is that backup going to be? And as we go through the list and we look at the number of players that are in contention and we start and just how different that this quarterback room looks then it was last spring. What it was a year ago and where they are now and the job that Tim Lester has done of rebuilding this thing and building it in a way where you actually excited about a couple of different components. So let's go there. You got the contenders.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Jackson Stratton. Of course last year he was in there. Thrust into the lineup because of the injuries, because of guys quitting on the team. Jackson Stratton was out there against UCLA. We saw a couple of qualities from him. But in the system, knows things. Jackson Stratton will start there. Conversation begins. Hank Brown, when the transfer portal opened,
Starting point is 00:04:51 remember before Mark Grunowski, it was Hank Brown. Now we also thought that Brendan Sullivan was going to be a part of it at that time. But Hank Brown was brought in right away. It was a contact that Tim Lester wanted right away. Hank Brown, guy with three years still of eligibility, started a couple of games at the SEC. Yeah, the first half against Arkansas did not go very well for him last year. Still, starting at a program like Auburn as a redshirt freshman, I think it shows you the talent that Hank Brown has.
Starting point is 00:05:20 They also go out and taking a step further, they bring in Jimmy Sullivan. Now, it's a rarity that you see a freshman out there running around making plays, right? To expect that that's going to happen, that we're going to see that this year, I think is a little unrealistic. Jimmy Sullivan was a guy that was also committed to the previous regime. The good news is, because that's not good news, just on the surface, I mean, another domino to that one is what we saw with another one of the former quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:05:54 James Rezar, who tore his ACL after they moved him, Tim Lester saw him for like a month and like, no, he's not a quarterback, and moved him to wide receiver because he's fast. And then he tore his ACL. And he was still around the program looking for a home. He found a home at UNC. I'm not done.
Starting point is 00:06:10 UNC Pembroke, a Division II program. That was the last of the quarterback recruits from the previous offensive coordinator. But Jimmy Sullivan was another one that was committed to the previous staff. Yet Tim Lester gave him the stamp of approval. I'm OK with it. And there's been some good buzz about Sullivan.
Starting point is 00:06:29 So you have all that. And then finally, you have Jeremy Heklinski. And he comes in from Wake Forest where Warren Rogero, the new offensive staff piece that was brought in, was his coach and offensive coordinator and to rein the mesh concept. So these are our contenders now for the backup quarterback spot. Jackson Stratton, Hank Brown, Jeremy Hicklinski, Jimmy Sullivan. And of that group, they all have things I think you like. Now Sullivan, for argument's sake and for ease, let's just put him at the bottom.
Starting point is 00:07:05 He's a true freshman. Him actually being the backup this year, I mean, he would have to wow in a way that you just don't anticipate a guy is going to wow. Jackson Stratton. I know there's a lot of love out of Jackson Stratton. We saw a couple of things last year that I can understand. He's got a live arm.
Starting point is 00:07:22 But I keep going back to limited time in Colorado State, 4 of 19. And, now that guy was there for a long time. He was in the portal for a long time before Iowa found him last summer. And because of that, a nice competent backup, I just don't think he's a guy. If catastrophe hits, you want that backup up role. I look at the upside, and to me it comes down to Heklinsky and Hank Brown. For me it's Hank Brown. The athleticism that he played with, the quarterback tutelage that he had both at Auburn and before it even at the high school level with Trent Dilfer, who did not have a great NFL career I get, but is known as a guy that knows quarterbacks incredibly well, the work that he does with
Starting point is 00:08:04 Elite 11. I think Hank Brown is the guy. I believe that Hank Brown will be the guy once we get to August and once we get to camp that he is going to be the guy ultimately that will be the backup quarterback. On top of it, the eligibility that he has. Look, Tim Lester, one of the many things that I love about him is he is not scared of competition. Bring guys in, bring in another body, bring in another arm. That's fine. Compete, see who's better. And if it doesn't work out, if you don't college football today, there's going to be another destination for you. Now it could be UNC Pembroke or there could be other ones that are available. That's where we are at backup quarterback. Ultimately, I think it'll be Hank Brown. We will see.
Starting point is 00:08:43 We continue Lockdown Hawkeyes. More football talk coming up here with John Bowencamp. We'll also talk recruiting a little bit later on, but we'll talk with John, his thoughts on Peyton McCollum, joining the Iowa basketball team and a look at the offensive line for the football program. That's all as we continue. Up next, John Bowencamp joins us from the Associated Press on the Lockdown Hawkeyes Podcast. Today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. The team with the third best record in the National League at some point, I'm assuming but we'll start talking Hawks with John. Hello, John. Bowencamp. How are you? I'm good. How are you? They'll be fine. I knew it was coming. I'd have been disappointed if after that the lead in.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Oh, that game seven Wrigley is going to be a barber. What's going to be fascinating. No home field. There's a collapse coming there. Oh no. Shout it up. Where I want to start with you, John, is kind of not where I assumed that we would go here today, but it just dawned on me watching. I saw some highlights in WNBA on the Twitter, and maybe it's just because I click on Hawkeye
Starting point is 00:10:57 and Cyclone Athletes. Lucy Olson showed up in her mystic gear, making a shot in one of the games, not sure where they play, but that aside, I want to ask you about the shoes that she was the position that she stepped into, right? Obviously a generational, we'll never see one like her again in Caitlin. And here comes Lucy Olson. And I think some of the fans, at least at the beginning thought, you know, that this is going this is going to be quote her replacement which is never going to happen. You saw all the home games covered most of them. I thought from where I sit that she handled the
Starting point is 00:11:36 pressure that came along with that not that Hawkeye fans overly burdened with it I didn't think but to be asked to you you know, be the next. I thought she did an admirable job in her one and only year at the University of. How about you? No, I did too. I mean, I, I mean, she had that little slump there during, which coincided with the losing streak there in January. But other than that, she played well.
Starting point is 00:12:01 I mean, she was, she was, she was, she, she just fit the role very well. And I thought down the stretch, especially once she kind of broke out at slump, she was really comfortable in, in, in the position she played the role she had with his team. And, uh, I, you know, I, I honestly think they probably wish they could have another year of her. I mean, that's, I mean, I, I thought she handled everything very well. Just great personality, but also great players.
Starting point is 00:12:27 She made shots, you know, got got the ball to the right people. And I thought she just for what she the position she was playing, which, you know, encompasses all of like what she said. I thought she did really well. Let's jump over to the men's side and a Friday news dump. Perhaps Pete McCollum is joining the basketball team with his son. In the grand scheme of things, we see sons join all the time and go on to play their four years with their dad. However, Hawkeye fan base is a little bit different after being
Starting point is 00:12:55 bird by Todd Licklider, all the McCaffrey years that both those players were good enough. It just, there's a lot of scar tissue there John and in your number one trying to resurrect a very disappointed fan base over the last 2025 30 years now of men's basketball you think this was the right choice for McCollum to bring his son along I Know I don't see a problem with it I really don't because I mean you I don't know how much he will play to begin But if you look at his numbers last year in high school they were really good
Starting point is 00:13:27 numbers this was a first team all-state kid on a really good high school basketball team and it's not like this kid can't play it's also not like he's going to play 30 minutes a game there is first and it's And it's like, you're fitting him into the roster. You're gonna use him as you see fit. He's not going to be a starter. He's not gonna do it, but he's a good player. And I mean, they needed to fill a couple roster spots. Why not fill him with a pretty good player who,
Starting point is 00:14:00 oh, by the way, happens to be your son. I didn't have a problem with it. I think the kid will fit into what they want him to do. I don't think it's going to be a big role for him, but I think it will be good for him to be there. Cause like you said, I think he's a pretty good basketball player. Uh, where I want to go with you is, um, stick sticking with the, uh, with the men's program practices started.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Um, which is, which is great. Uh, I don't think you've been given access as of yet. The media hasn't been allowed in. Correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't think you had, but what kind of, what are you, what are you hearing from back channels, if anything, is this just kind of, uh, you know, the roster in some respects is, uh, is very familiar with one another because there's so many drink Bulldogs on it.
Starting point is 00:14:43 They're just practicing further East than they normally would have last year. Um, what, what are you hearing, if anything, as to how it's going and what McCollum is asking his team to do, John? I haven't heard anything, but I've found it interesting watching the videos. And I'm looking at them. Like, you know, you're always used to, whenever you see the videos, you know, these guys, you know, or whatever the guy's coming back and you're looking at that and that's pretty much a whole new team. And so it's gonna take some getting used to getting to know these guys, you know, or whatever, the guys coming back and you're looking at that. And that's pretty much a whole new team. And so it's gonna take some getting used to getting to
Starting point is 00:15:08 know these guys and all that. But I agree with what you said. I think there's a really good foundation there. These are guys that know each other as the, you know, all the Drake guys know each other. They know what he wants as a coach. They know how he is as a coach. It's gonna take maybe a little bit of a learning curve to the guys coming in, even the Cooper Koch, you know, because he's going to have to learn a new coach. But I think this summer will be really good for them to kind of bond. And you kind of see in what they were doing in the first couple of videos that this is a team that he's really trying to get them to bond right away.
Starting point is 00:15:41 And you can see that there is some chemistry there right away. So it's gonna come. I still think this is going to be a very good team this year. I think it's an NCAA tournament team. Again, some things are gonna have to kind of fall into place, but I like what they're doing right now and I like where this program's at. When he got six guys that have played for him before, I think there's a chance to hit the ground running. And in college basketball, John, as you know, it's just so much different with the turnover in every single roster that happens. I think there's a big opportunity for them to go
Starting point is 00:16:11 out. Now, what have you heard about the non conference scheduling there hasn't been? There's a Bucknell game here. They're playing what in California. They'll play two games out there in Palm Desert and of course the Iowa State game. Have you heard much else though about what this non-conference slate is going to look like? I think an opportunity for them to get off to a good start. Yeah, I do too. And I mean, obviously they're going to fill in teams there that, you know, that everybody
Starting point is 00:16:34 always was. I believe Western Illinois is on the schedule. I have not heard anything officially, but I do believe Western Illinois is on the schedule. And you talk about a program that's getting all new players, these got a whole new roster there. So I mean, I think there's some challenges to what they're going to have this year. I mean, I think they're going to be tested in the schedule. You know, I will kind of see it fill in here over the next few weeks, but I like where they're at. I like the game in Des Moines. I think it's a good idea. I'm going to be curious to see if maybe there's going to be a women's game in there, but I
Starting point is 00:17:07 don't think there's going to be. I think it's a good idea. I think it's a good idea to play that game there or to play in the Quad Cities or whatever, to just kind of get out and kind of show this program around the state. Yeah. Look what the Quad Cities game meant to the fans last year. That was what stuck with me. I mean, to the team, rather getting in front of those fan bases and how passionate that they were. I went out to their Hall of Fame class for 2025, the two names that I think would resonate. Bob Boasby, obviously the athletic director and Brandon Sheriff. Here's a, I don't know if you, if it's possible to answer this question because everybody's gonna have so many opinions. Whose Ference's best offensive lineman? There's been so many. He was one of them.
Starting point is 00:17:51 He was just so good in that role. That's one of my freelance projects every year, the last couple years, is interviewing these people going in the Hall of Fame. It's kind of interesting to talk to them and what it means to them and all that. So I was looking through the class and I was like, these people speak some really good interviews. You know, look at Bob Bolesby and what he did. You know, when you saw it kind of broken down there, I was like, you know, he really did a lot there. I mean, the Davis, the Tom Davis stuff, you look back and you think maybe, you you know about that decision
Starting point is 00:18:25 But other than that he had a big impact on that athletic program And so, you know looking through that class all those people were deserving that it was They've had so many good athletes through but getting back to your original question I think Brandon sheriffs on that list and he may be at the top but you can argue for some different guys But he's definitely on that list and he may be at the top but you can argue for some different guys but he is definitely on that list. Gallery probably would be one for me as NFL career he would have started a right tackle and his sheriff he was the left tackle of the league. Linderbaum. They moved him right inside there's a great one and we can go on and on. Baraka. Yes. There's been so many. Bruce Nelson was the
Starting point is 00:19:02 least. Yes. And what you're talking about. And guys that originally came in and didn't have a lot of, you know, didn't have the stars by their name and came in and played really good football and grew as players and then went on to the NFL and had big impact. That's the thing that has always impressed me is the guys that have taken that next step
Starting point is 00:19:22 and have been really, really good. And Tristan Wirf maybe will have the best NFL career. Yeah, best tackle in the league. Out of all of them and he's going to be the most well compensated. And we're not talking about any poor guys out of this group either. No. On that we're going through. And speaking of that, looking at this offensive line, no, they,
Starting point is 00:19:40 Jennings Dunker right at the end of spring practice, he's going through surgery. Well, you don't want that. Maybe the best right tackle in college football coming back this season. They go out into the transfer portal. They bring in a candidate maybe to help on the left side there. We talk about the new offense and what Tim Blester is implementing and the quarterback plays going to be better, but it doesn't matter if your offensive line isn't very good. Where do you sit and the development of that offensive line and where they're going to
Starting point is 00:20:03 be by the time August camp starts up? I mean, I think they'll be pretty good. What I would like to see though is to have that group established by game one You know don't kind of keep kind of moving guys around as they kind of have here in Some of these past years have that group established, but I do think it's a very good group And I think it's then when you when you put them with the skill players, I, that's why I think this is going to be a much better office. And I think now it's just kind of, I mean, you, you've got a new, you know, she's not gonna say new office line coach. He's now been there a few years. Now they know what he wants.
Starting point is 00:20:38 You're starting to see a lot more coheesiveness that group. And I think that is going to be the big thing with this office in my mind. Yeah. Did anybody say Marshall Yanda? There's another Hall of Famers. I mean, it's just been so many. Who did he between what's the kids name? Parker? Yeah, Roshan Parker. Parker. That's what it was. Oh, what a blindside block that that that plays not legal anymore. No, that draws a 15 hour flag.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And maybe the injection. So many things do that. Somebody was talking about, I was a video from just a few years ago of a quarterback hit. I'm like, in today's game, that's a fine. Yeah. And it was in at that time, it was perfectly legal. You know, so. John, you're a member of the media. Trent and I would be a big 10 media days, but we're kind of different capacity. We're there to talk. And so you're there to to write stories. You can just fly me with you. No, we'd love to.
Starting point is 00:21:33 But you would be there to write as you've been through so many of those media days over the years in your capacity when you want Grunelsky to be there, because I'm not sure he will be there this year. No, and that's we were talking Tom Kaker and I were talking about that the other night about who might come. And I was like, he has to be, I agree. That's your starter, but he also has never played them. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:56 And Kirk likes to take guys there to honor them. Reward them. Yes. Yes. Reward them. And so yes, he should be there. Now, whether he will be there, I don't know, but he should be there in my mind because that's your face and that's the face of your office. And it has a really good story to tell. And, but I think Kirk always likes his, you know, the guys that have been there a long time to reward them. But then again,
Starting point is 00:22:22 you start thinking, well, okay, who should go? And then it goes back to you should take it and buy, buy. Yeah. Cause McNamara never went, right? He can go. Right. I mean, certainly his last year, last year was Jay Higgins year, uh, Jay Higgins, Luke Lashay and Quinn Schulte went last year. Yep. Yeah. Got to have invested in the program. I mean, it's Kirk. I know he had, but, but the rest, the big 10 media wants to talk to the guy that's going to change this offense. And I'm not talking about Jim Lester because he doesn't get to play.
Starting point is 00:22:53 They want to talk to her now. That's why I asked John, because he's, you know, the different media than you and I are, Trent. So that's why I put it that way. Interesting thing is Kirk's going to hate this being in Las Vegas. But that's because he always liked the Indianapolis. Yeah go over that morning get it done come home And you're not gonna be able to do that Yeah with this and and this thing's gonna be a lot more glitzy than in the past
Starting point is 00:23:13 And it's gonna be fascinating to see how that all goes Well, maybe that's John Bowen camp joining us from the Associated Press on the Iowa beat as we talk all things Hawkeyes a big appreciation to John for his time. It talks about Hawkeye football and basketball. Big weekend recruiting, really opening up Iowa is gonna be having some of their first official visitors of the season. The first ones of June coming in this weekend.
Starting point is 00:23:37 We'll talk about the next Iowa prospects when we come back on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Let's wrap it up with some football talk on the recruiting front. Four official visitors are scheduled to join this week this comes from Hawkeye Report Tom Caker Blair Sanderson doing great work over there on the Iowa beat.
Starting point is 00:24:25 And they have four guys that are listed coming in this weekend. So normally, at least before this big evolution of recruiting has happened and obviously the transfer portal and the way things look is Iowa would really designate one weekend where they basically tried to bring in everybody. And it didn't always work. There were usually a couple of stragglers and that's somewhat the case this year. But this weekend, there's four. Following weekend, I think one is scheduled. And then their big one is going to be the weekend of June 20th.
Starting point is 00:24:52 That's when they have their tailgater event. And the big one, the guys are already committed, come in also that weekend. So that's the way to make that work. So four guys this weekend that are coming in. One of them, a wide receiver. A wide receiver, Keaton Reinke, will are coming in. One of them, a wide receiver. A wide receiver, Keaton Reinke will be coming in. So guy six three, that big position that we saw Reese Vandersee last season play. Haven't had a ton of those guys and we look at the lack
Starting point is 00:25:13 of depth of that big wide bodied receiver. Basically it's Reese and it is Dayton Howard are kind of the big body receivers that they have. Good offer list as it pertains to athletics. Stanford, Northwestern, Air Force, yeah I mean those are some schools along with North Dakota, State and Minnesota also after Reinke so I will see on that front he's already taken visits to Northwestern and to Stanford and this will be his third of four visits that he has scheduled. Another one another intriguing guy is somebody from Memphis. In Iowa, I mean, where are you going back to Willie Guy, right? But Memphis has not been a recruiting hotbed for Iowa,
Starting point is 00:25:54 certainly in recent years. Daijou Ba is the young man, defensive lineman, 14 tackles for loss last year, seven and a half tackles. Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan State, NC State, Memphis, the hometown team and Georgia Tech are amongst his offers. This is middle of the group of visits. He's already been to Northwestern, he's been to Wisconsin, he's got visits to Indiana, NC State, Michigan State set up. I wouldn't say that this is probably a great one just because Iowa doesn't recruit there very often. We'll see. Maybe we'll see the Kelvin Bell as the right connection on that front and able to bring him in.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Next up is a safety coming in from another place that Iowa doesn't recruit very often. Now, Hayden had his connections to Nevada, of course, but we got a Vegas kid, Gavin Day, a safety. Last year 110 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss for safety. That's definitely eye opening there. Got a bunch of West Coast schools that are after him that are amongst his finalists. Washington, who he's already visited. Arizona, Utah, he's got visits coming up after this to those two destinations. Iowa, again, you figure don't get a whole lot of those guys. You wonder what the connections are about that one.'ll see on that front and then finally on the final visit coming up this weekend is Aidan Attek who was committed to Northern Illinois, but he's got visits set up for Iowa, Kentucky next weekend.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Took a visit to Minnesota last week. So those are the visitors coming up this week. And, you know, big question about football recruiting and the way it looks, you know, I only brought in 15 guys a year ago. Is that going to be the new norm? Where it was 18 to 22 prospects, seemingly every single year out of the high school ranks,
Starting point is 00:27:44 if that number is going to dwindle down, maybe because of the roster limits with the 105 lot roster limit and what that's going to look like next couple years, we don't know. But then you also throw into the fact, obviously with the transfer portal and the ability to plug holes very quickly and kind of what that's going to be. But that's what we have on tap coming up. And speaking of Hawkeye report and Tom Kaker, he's going to be joining us on tomorrow's program.
